GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS
30 May 2002

BRISK POLLING IN GOA: Instead of celebrating the Statehood Day today, Goans
have been busy electing a new set of legislators for our State Legislative
Assembly. Right from 8 am when the polling began, long queues started
forming from the doorsteps of the 1135 polling stations, set up to allow
Goa's 9,25,883 electorate to exercise its franchise. There is a vast choice
for the people with ten parties fielding 164 candidates (including seven
former Chief Ministers) plus 48 independents, all vying for the coveted
position of MLAs. The polling process will end at 5 pm today and the poll
results will be declared on June 1. It was heartening to see how even the
old and infirm came out, with the help of others, to cast their vote. (GoaNOW)

PARRIKAR, FAZAL GREET GOANS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Governor
Mohd Fazal have extended hearty greetings to the people of Goa on the
occasion of Goa Statehood Day on May 30, according to a DI press release. (H)

BJP WITHDRAWS SHEIKH JINA: Giving a clarion call to people from Navelim
constituency to defeat Luizinho Faleiro, the BJP has withdrawn the
candidature of Sheikh Jina in support of independent candidate John Raikar.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated that the withdrawal of Jina would
ensure that there is a direct fight between Luizinho and Raikar, who had
already sought the support of the NCP. (GT)

HYPER-SENSITIVE CONSTITUENCIES: The election Commission has identified
Poriem, Aldona, Calangute, Taleigao, St Cruz, Fatorda, Benaulim, Curtorim,
Cortalim, Mormugao, Canacona and Poinguinim as the 12 hyper-sensitive
assembly constituencies and deployed additional police force there for
conducting free and fair polls. (NT)

UNEASY CALM IN BARDEZ: On the eve of elections an uneasy clam prevailed in
the six constituencies in Bardez on Wednesday. Minus the noisy campaign and
late night meetings, most of the candidates and their key-men were huddled
together working on last minute plans and strategies. (H)

Fighters at Lohia Maidan to remember and pay tributes to the veteran
journalist. (H)

CLOSE SHAVE FOR 30 PEOPLE: After the train passed the Margao railway
crossing yesterday morning, the gate-keeper opened the gate little knowing
that a Margao-bound Mumbai train was coming in the opposite direction. As
the motorists and pedestrians began gingerly crossing over, they literally
froze in their tracks when they saw the train hurtling towards them at top
speed. The gate-keeper rushed to the tracks and erected the red flag.
Everyone heaved a sigh of relief when the train screeched to a halt barely
15 metres from the crossing. (GT)

District Magistrate, DC Sahoo, has externed Agostinho Fernandes, a resident
of Sanguem, from the jurisdiction of South Goa for a period of two years
under the Goa Maintenance of Public Order and Safety Act, 1988. The
magistrate passed the order ex-parte as Agostinho, who is involved in
criminal activities, did not turn up for the hearing, which was fixed on
May 23. (H)

TOBACCO CESSATION CLINIC: The National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication

elections, and possessing the mandatory election photo identity cards. (NT)

after the election process ended, led to some tense moment in Mapusa, as

Committee General Secretary, Subhash Narvekar. Around 200 BJP activists
held the Mapusa Police Station at ransom. (H)

this reporter spoke at various place in rural areas, had a common grievance
over getting descent jobs for their children. (NT)

VOTING MACHINES CONFUSE VOTERS: Though EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines)
are considered convenient and the Chief Electoral Office had assured of a

on the use of the machines resulted in some amount of difficulty,
particularly for those using the machine for the first time and the elders.
(GT)

has not materialized. (H)

Hi Aloysius,

I think that you are right.

I do not think that Goans do not need any more discussion group. Perhaps,
this type of discussion group starts for egoistic reasons. Also, cross
postings creates another type of problems.

I would appreciate if someone start some innovative ideas to share correct
information on Goa and Goan important matters which can help Goans.

Regards,

Cip

[Goanet] 31 MAY: GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS

2002-05-31 Thread satyamevajayate2

Could somebody provide information regarding the group of people
whose names were deleted from the Electoral role? We have not seen
anything yet.

And did the news item say, Mario and Wendell endorsed the saffron
brigade. Well, if they are not the first, certainly they will be
the last of the "Mohicans."
Rohit.
