[Goanet] Caring for animals in South Goa

GAWT or Goa Animal Welfare Trust is the only NGO here in South Goa
tackling the Stray Dog menace.

In fact, they do a lot of good...for the poor stray animals. Neutering,
Cleaning infected wounds, finding homes for stray pups and kittens, and
vaccination...all free of cost.

They work on a non profit basis but I'm sure they would surely think of
coming down south o Assolna and rounding up a few of the strays there
for neutering. After they do so...and the scar marks have been
healed...they return the dogs to the same locality.

Here are the contact info of some of the volunteers:

Goa Animal Welfare Trust
Grace (0832) 704-607
Wendy (0832) 745-143
Blanche (0832) 702-079
There's also Sandrathe most active...but I don't have her tel no for
now.

I help at the GAWT sometimes...Recently we rescued a dog that was hit on
the road...healed it and found it a home...here in Benaulim. We have
adopted 3 dogs and spayed 2 from GAWT.

[Goanet] Congratulations Dave Futers on community award!

Dear Goanet members,

I would like to take this opportunity to recognise Dave Futers and the
outstanding work he does in helping schools and school teachers in Goa. Dave
is also involved in other community work.

Last Thursday at a luncheon at the Commonwealth Institute in London Dave was
presented with a Community Award for the work he does in helping youngsters
and especially youngsters from deprived communities to engage in sailing as
a sport and as a means of engaging with other like minded others.

The awards presented by the Royal Yachting Association were announced by
them as the MBEs of the sailing community and Rod Carr the RYA Chief
Executive commented "The RYA Community Award winners are essentially
ambassadors for the thousands of people whose continual contribution makes
the sport of sailing great to be proud of."

The award its self is a certificate personally signed by the Princess Royal
together with a medallion inscribed with the recipients name.

During the day award winners were also introduced to Princess Royal at a
reception.

Dave, we're proud to have you as a Goanet member and a pleasure. We greatly
value your work. Keep it up!

Three cheers for Dave!

- Herman

once read that Goa Desc had access to an advocate. She failed to respond. I
am writing again. I am pleased that you and those you work with are
rendering
yeoman service to Goans everywhere.

I have a case before the police in Mapuca regarding fraud. I was
defrauded using forged signitures by a Parsi who has since deceased (his
wife
benefitted and I was told that she was arrested) and the Bank Manager B.P.
Shetcar was arrested in March. The police are dealing with the matter at a
snail's pace and I need to consult a lawyer and wonder if a civil case would
be of help. The matter is also before the Banking Ombudsman of the RBI in
Worli, Bombay, As the originals are in the hands of the Police, he is unable
to make a decision. The originals are supposed to be sent to Hyderabad for
verification of the signitures and as of August, they were not yet
despatched
there. I have also lodged a complaint with the Consumers Forum in Panjim. I
plan to return next month to look into the matter and hope that this sordid
matter can be resolved asap.

Any help or advice you can suggest is much appreciated.

Re: Holy Mary, Mother of God and/or Mother of Jesus,
is a controversy as old as birth of Christianity.

I am just started reading, The Shade of Swords --
Jihad and the conflict between Islam and Christianity,
by M.J. Akbar, editor in chief of Asian Age, India.
On page 41, he says, "For Muslims Mohammed is a man
and the last prophet in a sequence that begins with
Adman and includes Jesus; for Christians, Jesus is
divine, and he final redemption of mankind. It is
consequently incumbent upon the Church to declare
Muhammad an imposter. To do anytghing else would not
be deemed eternal The Quran venerates Jesue; for
the Church to return the compliment would be
suicide."\He qutoes Verse 171 of Surah 4, " Christ
Jesus the sony of Mary was (no more than) a Messenger
of Allah, and His World, which He bestowed on Mary,
and a Spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah
and His Messgers. Say not "Trinity": desist. It will
be better for you: for Alla is One God. Glory be to
Him (Faalted is He) abvoe having a son.'
He says the next verse confims the virginity of Mary,
but not the divinity of Jeus.
Further he adds, "The paradox is resolved: how can the
child of a virgin, sent by God, not be a son of God?
If that be the logic, then Adam should be called the
son of God for Adam was created from nothing.
Christians do not call Adam the son of God."

No comment (at least yet from me) but those interested
can engage in a clash of swords :-)

Survey on Greek marbles brings hope for Kohinoor diamond

By Sanjay Suri, Indo-Asian News Service

London, Oct 17 (IANS) A survey that shows that 56 percent of Britons want
the controversial Elgin marbles returned to Greece has brought new hope for
the return of the Kohinoor diamond and other Indian treasures to India.

The survey shows that only seven percent were opposed to return of the
famous marbles to Greece. The rest were undecided.

The Greeks like to call them the Parthenon marbles. They were taken away by
Lord Elgin from there in 1806 and remain in the British Museum.

"Our case is much stronger because we can show that the title to the
Kohinoor never passed to the British and the title goes back to Delhi,"
Bhaskar Ghorpade from the Association for the Restitution of the Cultural
Heritage of India (Archindia) told IANS.

The famed diamond reportedly belonged to Dalip Singh, the son of the 19th
century ruler of Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The 106-carat diamond is
said to be the centre stone of the state crown worn by the British monarch
at ceremonies.

The Greeks have won public support following a sustained campaign in the
public and among parliamentarians for return of the marbles.

For now, the Greeks are asking for the return for display in time for the
2004 Olympics while the statues remain the property of the British Museum.

But the strong public support to return of the marbles, up from 39 percent
in 1998, shows the new writing on the wall. "The public perception and even
the mood of the royalty has changed over these issues," Ghorpade said.

India has made three official requests for return of the Kohinoor since
1947, but never followed them up firmly.

Kuldip Nayar, MP, journalist and former Indian high commissioner to Britain
who has been leading the campaign for the return of the Kohinoor, said that
he had brought the issue up with Indian Finance Minister Jaswant Singh, who
was formerly the external affairs minister.

But Singh declined to take up the matter on the ground that relations with
Britain are good. "That cannot be made a reason for not claiming the
Kohinoor back," Nayar told IANS.

Ghorpade, a senior barrister who successfully fought the historic case that
brought a priceless 12th century Nataraja idol back to India, said: "The
time has come now for a determined effort by the government and the people
of India to fight for our common national pride."

In the Nataraja case, the statue had been bought by a Canadian firm.
Ghorpade made an appeal in the London High Court on behalf of the Shiv
Lingam, and won the case. The Nataraja figure is now at its original temple
in Tamil Nadu.

Ghorpade also fought successfully for the return of an ancient figure of the
Tamluk Yakshi to India.

The poll on the Parthenon marbles was conducted by Mori on behalf of the
British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles.

C. D'SILVA HONOURED IN KUWAIT.

Konkani Stage artiste C. D'Silva was felicitated in Kuwait by Konkani
Heritage Kuwait on 18th of this month at Hotel Village Inn, Kuwait City.
The felicitation function was attended by a good number of people, Goans,
Magaloreans and people from other Konkani speaking areas in India. C.
D'Silva was recently honoured by the Government of Goa with a prestigious
State Award and also by Goa's famed Kala Academy. During his last 50 years
of stage acting Mr. Silva acted in innumerable dramas performing different
types of roles. He is also a very good playwright, director, singer and
composer. Recently in the Sangit Sanz organized by Kuwait Konknni Kendr,
Silva gained major limelight by performing the role of old lady "Garamae"
along with another visiting ace comedian Benevangelisto. During the
felicitation function which was also attended by the two priests Fr. Melwyn
and Fr. John and a Deacon Sylvester from Kuwait Church, every speaker
showered abundant praises on Silva. The function started with a welcome
speech by the president of KHK Fidelis Fernandes, then Chief Guest Elvino
Rodrigues president of KKK and Guest of Honour Johny Suratkal carried
forward the praises on Silva. The other speakers who highlighted the good
work of Silva were Goan Stage Artistes Rosary Ferns, Sylvester Vaz who is
currently in Kuwait, Querobina Carvalho, Fr. John Fernandes, Fr. Melwin and
KCWA president Ida D'Silva. A poetry was recited by literary figure Lancy
Pinto Nayak. During the function some cultural items were also performed
namely solos by Bab Agnelo in praise of priests and their vocation, Rosary
Ferns on anger in which he recollected how Araujo a Goan from St. Cruz had
murdered 2 persons in Kuwait out of anger and highlighted the curse of
anger, Querobina on her personal experience on day to day matters, Marcos
Vas on C. D'Silva and C. D'Silva with his beautiful serene voice rendered
very melodiously one of his old numbers of course to the delight of everyone
and a duet was rendered by Roney & Jasmine. A Mando with Dulpod was
rendered by Rosary, Goretti, Sylvester Vaz, Mario Rebello, Conchita and
Apolina. Before serving the buffet, KHK Vice President Joseph D'Souza
proposed the vote of thanks. The KHK Memento was presented to C. D'Silva by
Fidelis Fernandes.

Among the speakers everyone highlighted the importance of Konkani to
preserve and protect our unique characteristics. Since there were very many
Mangaloreans among the audience, everyone spoke in the unity of both the
communities. Johny Suratkal a writer from Mangalore and a businessman in
Kuwait described how important Konkani is for us while Ms Ida Lobo the
acting president of Kuwait Canara Welfare Association with her lovely
appearance and beautifully prepared speech told the gathering that it is
Konkani that brought us Mangaloreans and Goans together. She also requested
everyone to impart Konkani to our children. In her Konkani Mae has a very
powerful orator among the females. Well known literary giant Lancy Pinto
Nayak dazzled the entire audience by reciting a beautiful poetry "Aum
Konnacho". Because of the greatness of the topic he received more
applauding from the audience. Fr. Melwyn spoke of the good work Konkani
organizations are doing in Kuwait and assured his help for any such
activities in the future while his visiting colleague from Hubli Fr. John
Fenandes expressed his total satisfaction on the proceedings which he said
of very high quality. On behalf of Goans Rosary Ferns, Querobina and
Sylvester Vaz showered ample praises on C. D'Silva by describing Silva's
work. Sylvester Vaz a magnificent figure among the audience captured the
hearts of the audience by delivering a very intellectual and historical
speech on the life of D'Silva and proved to everyone that he is not only a
stage artiste of high calibre but also a great orator, so too Querobina and
Rosary Ferns showed these qualities in their speeches. Elvino Rodrigues in
his speech showed his concern for not producing Konkani workers. He said it
is the same people for so many years now involving in Konkani activities and
new faces are rarity.

Sorry about my silence, I didn't see this earlier. The question is how
would it be best to archive something on the Net. It's a technical
point. Do we choose websites, mailing lists or Newsgroups? I'm still
groping for an answer myself
IMHO, websites depend on their being continually registered if they're
to remain online. This could be a problem with smaller sites. Mailing
lists can have their archives online. But this is dependent on, again,
on server space or the policies of yahoogroups.com. Lastly, Newsgroups
remain in circulation longer. But the flip side is that they tend to
remain somewhat ghettoised (for instance, search www.google.com under
its 'groups' category). FN

Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO
---

Dear Cybergaokars on GoaNet,

Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event
to be held on 25th October will feature the topic,
problems faced by Cable TV subscribers.

As part of a series on public interest issues
Friday Balcao will focus on the need for joint action
to deal with the problems faced by Cable TV subscribers.

Although there exists a Cable TV Networks (Regulations) Act 1995,
the issues confronting Cable TV subscribers in Goa will
show that there is an urgent need for joint action from stakeholders.

The recent shut down of Cable TV in Goa for over a week has brought
these issues centre stage. Besides the Television Companies,
the Advertising Agencies and the commercial Sponsors for serials
& sports events, also have major stakes in the business.

While Consumers have complaints of no service agreements,
non issuance of cash receipts, poor reception and over charging,
Cable Operators have to comply with pay channel rates, entertainment tax,
registration with the Postal authorities, compulsory re-transmitting of
Doordarshan Channels and a strict advertisement code.

The authorised officers of the Government to deal with
complaints of subscribers with regards the provisions of the
Cable TV Networks (Regulations) Act 1995 are not widely known.
Similarly a large number of Cable TV subscribers are not aware of
possible action and reliefs available under the Consumer Protection Act 1986.

The Balcao session will address these issues and identify
areas of intervention by Cable TV subscribers, Cable Operators,
Television Companies and the concerned Central & State
Government officials.

The outcome of the discussions and the action plan
suggestions will be submitted to various citizens groups
as well as the concerned Govt. agencies.

Those citizens wanting to contribute to the discussion
at Friday Balcao are urged to attend the event while those who
cannot attend the event may send their views
and action plan suggestions by post to
FRIDAY BALCAO Post Box 78, Mapusa 403 507
or by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm
at the Goa Desc Resource Centre
No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta,
Mapusa and is open to members of the public.

Those citizens who would like to receive
the regular invitation to Friday Balcao and a one page synopsis
of the fortnightly session can subscribe for the same
by sending Rs.80/- to cover printing and mailing costs.

Interested citizens wanting more information
on Friday Balcao can phone on 252660

best wishes,

Roland Martins.
