[Goanet] Caring for animals in South Goa
You can post to GoaNet. Send in your views and comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED] GAWT or Goa Animal Welfare Trust is the only NGO here in South Goa tackling the Stray Dog menace. In fact, they do a lot of good...for the poor stray animals. Neutering, Cleaning infected wounds, finding homes for stray pups and kittens, and vaccination...all free of cost. They work on a non profit basis but I'm sure they would surely think of coming down south o Assolna and rounding up a few of the strays there for neutering. After they do so...and the scar marks have been healed...they return the dogs to the same locality. Here are the contact info of some of the volunteers: Goa Animal Welfare Trust Grace (0832) 704-607 Wendy (0832) 745-143 Blanche (0832) 702-079 There's also Sandrathe most active...but I don't have her tel no for now. The survey shows that only seven percent were opposed to return of the famous marbles to Greece. The rest were undecided. The Greeks like to call them the Parthenon marbles. They were taken away by Lord Elgin from there in 1806 and remain in the British Museum. "Our case is much stronger because we can show that the title to the Kohinoor never passed to the British and the title goes back to Delhi," Bhaskar Ghorpade from the Association for the Restitution of the Cultural Heritage of India (Archindia) told IANS. The famed diamond reportedly belonged to Dalip Singh, the son of the 19th century ruler of Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The 106-carat diamond is said to be the centre stone of the state crown worn by the British monarch at ceremonies. The Greeks have won public support following a sustained campaign in the public and among parliamentarians for return of the marbles. For now, the Greeks are asking for the return for display in time for the 2004 Olympics while the statues remain the property of the British Museum. But the strong public support to return of the marbles, up from 39 percent in 1998, shows the new writing on the wall. "The public perception and even the mood of the royalty has changed over these issues," Ghorpade said. India has made three official requests for return of the Kohinoor since 1947, but never followed them up firmly. Kuldip Nayar, MP, journalist and former Indian high commissioner to Britain who has been leading the campaign for the return of the Kohinoor, said that he had brought the issue up with Indian Finance Minister Jaswant Singh, who was formerly the external affairs minister. But Singh declined to take up the matter on the ground that relations with Britain are good. "That cannot be made a reason for not claiming the Kohinoor back," Nayar told IANS. Ghorpade, a senior barrister who successfully fought the historic case that brought a priceless 12th century Nataraja idol back to India, said: "The time has come now for a determined effort by the government and the people of India to fight for our common national pride." In the Nataraja case, the statue had been bought by a Canadian firm. Ghorpade made an appeal in the London High Court on behalf of the Shiv Lingam, and won the case. The Nataraja figure is now at its original temple in Tamil Nadu. Ghorpade also fought successfully for the return of an ancient figure of the Tamluk Yakshi to India. The poll on the Parthenon marbles was conducted by Mori on behalf of the British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles. --Indo-Asian News Service To view GoaNet's archives http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-net For (un)subscribing or for help, contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Don't want so many e-mails? The question is how would it be best to archive something on the Net. It's a technical point. Do we choose websites, mailing lists or Newsgroups? I'm still groping for an answer myself IMHO, websites depend on their being continually registered if they're to remain online. This could be a problem with smaller sites. Mailing lists can have their archives online. But this is dependent on, again, on server space or the policies of yahoogroups.com. Lastly, Newsgroups remain in circulation longer. But the flip side is that they tend to remain somewhat ghettoised (for instance, search www.google.com under its 'groups' category). [Goanet] Problems faced by Cable TV subscribers to be discussed atFRIDAY BALCAO.
-- What's On In Goa: * Oct 16-27: Vipasana meditation, Alto Porvorim * Oct 23: Launch of CellOne, BSNL's cellular service in Goa * Oct 24: Antonio Pereira Puraskar (Award) ceremony, Porvorim -- --- Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO --- Dear Cybergaokars on GoaNet, Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 25th October will feature the topic, problems faced by Cable TV subscribers. As part of a series on public interest issues Friday Balcao will focus on the need for joint action to deal with the problems faced by Cable TV subscribers. Although there exists a Cable TV Networks (Regulations) Act 1995, the issues confronting Cable TV subscribers in Goa will show that there is an urgent need for joint action from stakeholders. The recent shut down of Cable TV in Goa for over a week has brought these issues centre stage. Besides the Television Companies, the Advertising Agencies and the commercial Sponsors for serials & sports events, also have major stakes in the business. While Consumers have complaints of no service agreements, non issuance of cash receipts, poor reception and over charging, Cable Operators have to comply with pay channel rates, entertainment tax, registration with the Postal authorities, compulsory re-transmitting of Doordarshan Channels and a strict advertisement code. The authorised officers of the Government to deal with complaints of subscribers with regards the provisions of the Cable TV Networks (Regulations) Act 1995 are not widely known. Similarly a large number of Cable TV subscribers are not aware of possible action and reliefs available under the Consumer Protection Act 1986. The Balcao session will address these issues and identify areas of intervention by Cable TV subscribers, Cable Operators, Television Companies and the concerned Central & State Government officials. The outcome of the discussions and the action plan suggestions will be submitted to various citizens groups as well as the concerned Govt. agencies. Those citizens wanting to contribute to the discussion at Friday Balcao are urged to attend the event while those who cannot attend the event may send their views and action plan suggestions by post to FRIDAY BALCAO Post Box 78, Mapusa 403 507 or by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public. Those citizens who would like to receive the regular invitation to Friday Balcao and a one page synopsis of the fortnightly session can subscribe for the same by sending Rs.80/- to cover printing and mailing costs. Interested citizens wanting more information on Friday Balcao can phone on 252660 best wishes, Roland Martins. === GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 252660 mailto:goadesc@;goatelecom.com website: www.goadesc.org -- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy === We need your help to introduce GoaNet to more Goans across the globe...
