No major changes to the structure have been undertaken for last several decades. But, it does receive a periodic coat of white wash before the feast of its Patron Saint. Last year, the BJP Govt. undertook the illumination of the church and this has further enhanced the beauty of the church by night. However, plans are now afoot to refurbish the church interiors as well as to undertake a few structural changes so as to accommodate more people for the church service. These modifications are limited to the sides, and the necessary structural changes will be done on the either wing so as to accommodate further around 400 people or so. The facade will be left untouched so as to maintain its centuries old architectural design and rich esthetic beauty. The parishioners and 'Gaunkars' are all united on this matter and will not compromise whatsoever. The project is presently under active consideration and awaiting final approval from all concerned, since the cost of renovation/modifications runs into nearly 60 lakhs plus (estimates). Once complete, the church will have a new look on the inside with modern facilities for sound/lights/benches/fans etc making attending lengthy church services a pleasant experience. The St. Andrew's church caters to a large catholic population from in and around the Port City and during the Sunday morning Service the church overflows with people. For Christmas, New Year, Good Friday & Easter the service is held in the open air where too the congregation is so large that it spills outside the church compound. In the meantime the expansion of the cemetery is also underway to meet the growing demands of those called to their final rest. The Church cemetery also caters to the surrounding parishes of Our Lady of Candelaria Church Baina, Our Lady of Desterro Church, Desterro, and the St. Francis Church at the Harbour which are not equipped with cemetery. [Goanet] Naval Aircraft Crash
=== Help GoaNet grow... recommend it to others you know... === The Flag Officer Commanding Goa Area (FOGA) Admiral Sunil Dhamle, at the Press Conference held at the INS Gomantak this evening confirmed the loss of the two Indian Navy's Maritime Reconnaissance Aircrafts, IL 304 & IL 302 in a crash at 9.45 hours IST today morning outside the airfield area. These aircraft were based at the HANSA Goa, of the Anti-submarine Warfare Squadron. These two aircraft were taking part in a fly past, which is otherwise a routine exercise. After the end of the fly past, the two Aircrafts collided sideways in mid-air and crashed at two different places in a radius of 1-5 kms from each other. These two were the part of the five Aircrafts, the Indian Navy had acquired from Russia in the year 1977 and were flown by experienced Air Pilots. Informing further he said that these aircrafts of the IN/38 Squadron had a safe flying record. No accident was reported for the last 25 years and they had a cumulative record of 30,000 hours of safe flying in the skies. He said it was most unfortunate that the Indian Navy has lost 12 Naval Personnel 4 of whom are experienced Pilots. Answering queries from the Press, to a pointed question whether it was a head-on collision, Admiral Dhamle said " Both the planes were travelling in the same direction, and not in the opposite direction. The cause of the collision and subsequent crash could possibly be due to a mechanical failure or may be due to a human error. " In the meantime, the naval authorities have set up an Inquiry Commission to look into the cause of the accident. The Commanders of the two aircrafts were well experienced having also taken part in the last International Fleet Review. All the crewmembers were married and had an average age of 35 years. When questioned if the site of the crash is outside the naval area, he said the area of the crash is called the 'airfield zone' and a normal area. To another question, FOGA answered that the aircraft have been overhauled and their service life has been extended up to 2015. In the meantime, the Flight Data Recorder of one of the aircraft has been recovered and the search for the other is on. While stating that the Kith & Kin of the Navy Personnel who lost their life in this tragic will be compensated as per the Rules of the Ministry of Defense, the Civilians too will also be entitled to compensation as per the rules of the MOD in force. The 12 Naval families who have lost their dear ones, and residing in the Naval Officers Residential area are being taken care of by the entire Naval Community and rendered all help and morale support in their hour of grief. Ironically, this morning the Naval Authorities were celebrating the Silver Jubilee of the induction of these aircraft in the Squadron and their safe flying for the last 25 years when the tragedy struck. Around 50 senior Officers of the Navy and their families witnessed the Fly past. Besides retired Admiral and other retired Officers also attended the celebrations which had a very sad and tragic ending. In the meanwhile, operations to break through the wreckage and the concrete debris still continue with the Navy Personnel and other Agencies on the job. The Naval Police with the local Police have cordoned the area around the crash site and entry is restricted. The local Police, have done a good job in rendering all timely help and in controlling the crowds which rushed to the site on hearing of the tragic air accident, the first of such a grave intensity in Goa. The final death toll : 12 Naval Personnel and 3 civilians died in the accident, while several others who were working in the bungalow are battling for their lives in the nearby hospitals. [Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY CELEBRATIONS 2002
WORLD GOA DAY 2002 CELEBRATIONS It all started in the year 1999, when Rene Barreto, a U.K. based NRI Goan came up with a bright idea to dedicate one day in the year to celebrate about Goa. A day to celebrate the Goan Heritage, Goan Culture, Traditions, Music, Goan cuisine, and just about anything and everything that is truly Goan. A dreamer that he is, Rene took the bold initiative to set the ball rolling for these grand celebrations of Goans, by Goans not only in Goa but by Goans spread across the length and breath of the globe. 20th August a memorable date to commemorate the recognition and inclusion of our mother tongue Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution was therefore chosen to celebrate this unique World Goa Day every year. Rene Barreto hailing from Vasco, and now a resident in London is no stranger to Goa and Goans. He is also involved in the cause for Goan football. In December 2001, he was bestowed the Goa Sudharop Award, for his social involvement at the World Wide Goans' Convention held at the Kala Academy. A great motivator and inspirer that Rene is, who will never take no, for an answer. His idea soon gained momentum among other like minded NRI Goans spread all over the world. With the help of the internet and various Goan Web sites and mailings lists Rene transmitted his ideas across to other fellow Goans. And sooner than expected Rene's dream of 'World Goa Day' became a reality from the year 2000, when the Goan Diaspora held the first celebrations in London and elsewhere. Now that the celebrations are into its' third year, Rene can rightly be called the Father of 'World Goa Day' celebrations. No body can deny this indefatigable man this honour. His motivating spirit to inspire others is so persevering and infectious to say the least. This year the World Goa Day is scheduled to be celebrated by Goans all over the world from 17th to 18th August'2002 being Saturday and Sunday. However, in London various Institutions and Social Organisation are planning a month long activity calendar besides these two days, in August. The theme for celebration this year is our Goan Cultural Heritage with special emphasis on the konkani language. This year's World Goa Day however bears special significance since the celebrations are dedicated in a special way to our mother tongue Konkani. On February 4th this year, was the fifteenth anniversary of the Language Act by which Konkani was approved as the official language of Goa by Goa's Legislative Assembly. Ten years ago on 20th August, Konkani got the unanimous approval, by the two houses of the Indian Parliament, by which Konkani was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Moreover, the official language was a prerequisite for grant of Satehood, and on 30th May this year, Goans have also celebrated the 15th Anniversary of Goa's Statehood. The convenor Rene Barreto, through his sustained efforts and never-say-die-spirit has succeeded in garnering support for his third annual celebrations from Goans living in different corners of the globe. For the first time from Mumbai we have the Goan Review Art Foundation under the Chairmanship of Fausto da Costa, Editor and Publisher of The Goan Review, a bilingual illustrated bi-monthly magazine who have come forward to celebrate World Goa Day on the 17th August in a grand manner. The celebrations will be held at the Sacred Heart School Hall Santacruz (West). A variety entertainment program will be held consisting of Mando-dulpods, Goan folk dances, skits and sing-along and Goan Culinary delicacies. Some great Goan personalities who have rendered yeoman service to the cause of Konkani and Goa will also be felicitated on this auspicious day. And finally to profess love and solidarity to the motherland of Goa, the song which has now become synonymous with Goa Day Celebrations "PROUD TO BE A GOAN" composed by NRI Goan Basilio Magno from Spain, will be sung. Back home in Goa, The World Goa Day is being celebrated at theKala Academy -Panjim Goa with the inclusion of the inaugural programto be given by the GOA STATE STRING ORCHESTRA, and will beconducted by Nigel Dixon on the 13th of August 2002. The Mustard Seed Art Company, theatre group will be putting up a short play on 18th August' 2002, at 6 PM at the Betim cross as part of the World Goa Day celebrations under the auspices of Goa Heritage Action Group. The play is directed by Ms.Isabelle St. Rita Vaz and the story line dwells on the life of a Goan and his love for the land. Besides there will also be reading of Konkani Poems by Goan Poets namely; Mrs. Nutan A. Sakhardande, Ms. Maya A. Kharangate, and Ms. Nayana Adarkar. Lisbon in Portugal, will also be celebrating World Goa Day for the Second year in succession. The Goan Community in Lisbon will also be joined by the people hailing from Daman and Diu as par
[Goanet] No Parking along the Swatanthra Path in Vasco
For the last few weeks the Port City of Vasco has been making headlines, but, for the wrong reasons. Today, the 1st August Vascoites woke up to a pleasant surprise. The Swatanthra Path starting from the St. Andrew's Church and going right up to the IOC (Ooops! Oil Pilferage fame.) Junction had policemen in khaki lined up on either side at close distance right up to the Port Institute. Besides, the Traffic Cops in Blue & White Uniform were also there with their bullets. For the unsuspecting citizens for a moment it looked as though the city was readying itself to welcome some VVIP visitor. But, that was not so. From today, the entire Swatanthra Path has been declared a 'No Parking Zone' and the heavy presence of the men in uniform was to ensure that no vehicle owners violated the new traffic system implemented on the eve of Vasco Bhajani Saptah festival. This strict vigil by the uniformed Traffic Personnel will continue for a week or more, by which time perhaps, the citizens will fall in line with the new system without having to be closely monitored. To the relief of the citizens of this Port town, the busy Swatanthra Path will now hopefully be free from the parked vehicles during the daytime, as also during the night which had earlier made life a little difficult. This morning the Police Mobile Crane was seen busy in action lifting some vehicles, which were parked, haphazardly in the city. The MMC and the Traffic Cell of Vasco should be complimented for finally taking some concrete steps to streamline the chaotic traffic system in the Port Town. All the inner roads beginning from the Port Institute onwards have been duly demarcated and signboards erected for separate parking of two and four wheelers. Traffic Police were today seen manning every inner road and strictly supervising the parking of vehicles. A whistle here and a sharp whistle there! This was how things were in the Port Town today. As a matter of fact the Port City is well planned with many such inner roads which has ample space for parking and if these are systematically utilized then driving down the Swatanthra Path will be a pleasant experience.Today the city towards this end had a new look with respect to the traffic order. There was no chaos, no erratic parking, everything seemed so orderly. Systematic and orderly parking meant more space for other vehicles to get accommodation. The Motorcycle Pilots who would earlier illegally park and solicit customers near the busy 'Almeida Point' in the market place adding further to the traffic mess were no longer there and for once there seemed to be a lot of open space for movement of vehicles and pedestrians too. This spot was always prone to traffic congestion specially during the peak hours of morning, noon time and in the evening. I had myself, in the past taken up this unhealthy practice of the motor cycle pilots with the authorities. With the implementation of the new system of parking, it would no doubt be a little inconvenient for vehicle owners, as they will no longer be able to park their vehicle at the doorstep of their office or establishment and hop inside. But, would rather have to park a little away and walk the distance either to their office, establishment or even for the purpose of marketing. The effectiveness of the new system will be known only after a few days depending on how serious the Traffic Cell is in continuing their strict vigil throughout the day and if need be even book the offenders for the violations. In the meantime the citizens will keep their fingers crossed hoping that Vasco Port town will see better days ahead with respect to the city traffic regulation which has been quite elusive for a long time.
