2003-02-19 Thread FN

For more information/links, see http://goanet.netfirms.com

-- Forwarded message --

India Linux Users Group (ILUG-Goa) will be meeting on Feb 22 at the CSI
office (3rd Floor, Naguesh Apartments, Near Navtara Hotel, Panjim) from 4
to 6.30 pm.

Planned activities for this weekend in Panjim include:

o Bijon Shaha to talk on GNUify, the recent event at
Symbiosis Pune, where he was a guest speaker at a
new but ambitious meet started in this tech city.

o Arvind Yadav to speak about COMPAS, the meet at
Kolkata where the LUG had a significant presence...
  (subject to confirmation)

o Tilmann Singer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> from Europe will be briefly
speaking on OpenACS. This is a cool toolkit for building
community web applications. See http://openacs.org (specially of
interest for people into web apps).

Singer lives in Berlin, and came to know of us via the Wizards
of Os conference. He is currently working for four months in
Hyderabad, helping with setting up a small company focussed on
the development of a Free/Libre and Open Source Software web
toolkit (openacs) and is an open source campaigner himself.

o Discussions on Cyberage, GoaSchoolsComputersProject, Freeduc
and related GNU/Linux-in-Education issues. Wanted: volunteers
  to demo Freeduc.

o Resources: Sharing of new CDs and stickers available...
  please visit Ajay Cuncolienkar's http://sofall.vze.com
for a list of the latest CDs available. Also visit ILUG-Goa
  archives at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ilug-goa

o Please note: The supply of 'LINUXForYou' copies available
for sale with the LUG are exhausted. Those interested are
requested to pick up the same early from Varsha Book Stall
or Mandovi Newspaper Agency or other outlets in Panjim and
elsewhere. The Knoppix CD that comes with this issue makes
this a particularly worth-it buy, specially for those wanting
to check out what GNU/Linux is all about.

Any other issues for the upcoming meeting/s? Please announce...

GNU/Linux meetings are free for all to attend. You're welcome. Please
confirm you attendance in advance, by sending an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Regards, Frederick Noronha.

PS: The next meeting of ILUG-Goa in Margao will be on March 8. Kindly note
that the Margao meetings will henceforth be held on the second Saturday of
each month.

PPS: The Goa LUG is looking out for additional venues where it could
launch its activities (specially outside of Panjim, Margao and
Farmagudi). Any suggestions? Please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Edgar,
Your suggestion about petitioning Ted Kennedy is a good idea. I
would like to sign this letter.

Here are two ways we could approach it.

1. Could you draft this letter or have someone closely familiar
with the issue do it and then circulate it on the list. Please
do not misunderstand my suggesting you darft it. No pressure
here.

2. Could Goanet put up a petition on their site that we could
all go to and sign. I feel this way no one feels pressured.

After a cut-off date the collated signatures could be fowarded
to the indefatigible Senator either through you or directly by
the keepers of Goanet.

There need to be two similar letters that should be written. One would be
from people living in Massachusetts and the other from people all over the
US. This way, Ted Kennedy will know the level of interest on this issue
from his constituents as well as other Americans.

The local chapter of a Goan association in Boston needs to use its
membership to gather signatures for this.

As for Neal Pinto's earlier query on whether Mrs. Cruz can sue the INS in
the US. She can, all she needs is a competent lawyer and lots of patience.
There have been cases like these in the past and the US government usually
settles. I personally think she has a strong case, though this is the
opinion of someone who is not an attorney.

I agree with your approach and initiative. I would suggest sending to the
press.

Can any Goanetter try to reach Ms. Cruz and get her version, just in cause
the Press omitted or distorted the situation? Also, may be worth asking her
if she would like to have more publicity.

[Goanet] INS-deported Canadian a Goan? Role of Goa Netters!!

2003-02-19 Thread edgar furtado

For more information/links, see http://goanet.netfirms.com

Suggestion:

Fellow Readers;

Goanet is a vibrant and rumbunctious Asian cyberfora
community. This community can do something for an
innocent mother and Asian Canadian Naturalized Citizen
who had to face ridicule at the hands of an INS
inspector of the NEw Homeland Security DHS in Chicago.

A good approach is writing a complaint letter to
Senator Ted Kennedy of Masachusetts who is on several
Immigration Control and Reform Acts with the Dept. of
Justice, this should be attached with signed petition
containing addresses contact numbers of petitioners.
As a Community we can do something instead of bashing
up with rhetoric and opinions.

To this end I have worked closely with Senator of
several of his Asian Campaigns and I am known to his
office in the US Senate.

If there is backing and participation we can all come
together and show the world what we can do as a
community for an innocent woman be it Goan or non-Goan
she is a person of South East Asian Decent.

Let me know I can get this done.

I do hope that included in the 20,000 are the dozen or so dogs that
