An opinion should not differ because he/she/it/they are white, neither an opinion can change because of the colour, and where is it laid down that if one is white you are a superior race and above the law?if you say an x black person is a thief or y brown person did something wrong , would you charge them because of their colour being black and brown etc. and lay off your hands if it was a white colour having committed this act? Re: [Goanet]INSULT TO GOANS and Cartier also shares the cake
Wanting to be Goans is a dream of many. Especially those from the sub continent. We have sikhs, kashmiris, mallus, andras, bengalis, biharis, bangla deshis, pakistanis, kannadigas, all wanting to be Goans. This effect has now taken toll on some design and jewellery companies such as Cartier the makers of famous time pieces. Their latest diamond and gem stone necklace is called Delices de Goa. Re: [Goanet]INSULT TO GOANS
Hi Tim, You are way off the mark! Rajastanis and Kasmiris are different from Goan dress culture, in the first place. As for the foreign women and or men of European origin; they visit Rajastan, Goa and Kasmir too, except for now it is a 'terrorist area'. So your hypothetical question makes no sense. You are just trying to find fault and argue without thinking! I think this line of talk should stop; and instead all our energies be directed to " Lonely Planet" tourist guide. which is showing so much 'Ignorance; Thaks Gabe for the enlightenment, in this affair. [Goanet]Ayurveda
While we have this discussion about Ayurveda and whether it has been scientifically proven to be effective, I believe in the old saying "The proof of the pudding is in the eating". I can personally vouch for the efficacy of Ayurveda, as the doctor who treats my family, was trained in the Ayurvedic medical discipline. Whatever the ailment, her treatment has been very effective. I am very impressed that in Ayurveda the doctor not only treats the symptoms but seeks and attempts to treat the root cause of the ailment. I am glad that in Goa, we have the choice of Allopathic (Western), Ayurvedic, or Homeopathic medical treatment. Vivian A. [Goanet]True colours ?
Navhind Times on the Web: GoaThe Congress spokesman seems to be showing the true colours of the 'suit case' political set up in Goa...and the colours definitely do not include 'green'. Is it not cheeky for Jitendra[ who operated the Sky Pak farm in Pernem] to be asking the Goa Govt. to rehabilitate those who have raped virgin forests for personal wealth? Should the abettors who pimped for these rapists and provided transport be rehabilitated at Govt cost? In my opinion, they deserved to be hanged! Hats off to the present regime for issuing notices for stoppage of mining in the sanctuary area. Jitendra does not want an educational estate in Pernem. Rape of forests in Sanguem and Sattari is okay...continuity with the colonial rule. Wah! Chota sarkar of the Visconde de Pernem. Salazar would be proud of your loyalty to his double standards. Quote. Wednesday, December 3, 2003 Take measures to revert decision to close mines in notified areas: Congress Party. NT Staff Reporter Panaji Dec 2: Expressing distress at the observations and subsequent decisions of the high-powered committee appointed by the Supreme Court to close down all mines in the notified areas of Mhadei and Netravali regions, the Congress party today demanded that the state government take all measures to revert the decision to close the mines. The Congress spokesman, Mr Jeetendra Deshprabhu told a press conference that closure of the mines would cause immense hardships - both social and economic - to over 2,000 persons and many families who are dependent on the continuous operations of the mines. “Many families have invested huge amounts by taking loans from financial institutions to buy trucks and other earth-moving equipment. The closure of the mines will be financially debilating to these people,” Mr Deshprabhu said. Mr Deshprabhu said the Congress position, vis-a-vis the mines-closure issue, was arrived at today afternoon at a meeting of the Congress Legislature party (CLP) presided by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Pratapsingh Rane. “The government should take all steps to revert the decision by approaching the Supreme Court in the matter of the public interest litigation, which ironically has gone against the interest of the public,” Mr Deshprabhu said. “In the meantime, the government must pay the affected persons a subsistence allowance and to those who have taken loans, the government must waive the interest component till such time the decision to close the mines is reversed,” he said. Mr Deshprabhu said the government must advise all the concerned banks to stop recovery proceedings till the matter is legally resolved and that it should examine the possibility of rehabilitating the affected persons in other areas to minimise their hardships caused by the mines-closure. “The government must note with concern that these mines have been in operation since pre-liberation and their abrupt closure will adversely affect the revenue of the state as well as its export earnings,” Mr Deshprabhu said. There is a very simple solution to all this. Indian Universities or the CSIR can undertake a study where a single Ayurvedic treatment is administered to a study group and the results are published in a scientific journal. The problems as usual is, it is the Ayurvedic doctors who do not prefer such recognition. PBS did attempt to do explore the value of these treatments, and their website contains parts of that show: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/altmed/ > > While lapping up the unpalatable (and potentially dangerous) concoctions > dished out as "food supplements" by some US companies, who market them to > Third World countries including India at exorbitant prices, does it occur to > Santosh that there are many things in this whole wide world -- in the realm > of science, health and medicine -- to which the Western "critical analysts" > have no clue at all? [Goanet]Christmas in Goa...........
Filomena Geise asked on behalf of her grandniece, how Christmas is celebrated in Goa. Having lived in the USA for over 3 decades, and now living in Goa, I find Christmas quite and refreshingly different in Goa. Christmas in Goa is more Christ-centered. Children love to make christmas grottos in their house. It is delightful to see how creative the little children are in decorating their grottoes. There is a great reverence for the Christ child. One does not see Christmas trees in Goa, except at places like 5-star hotels which put up synthetic trees all decorated and lighted up. Instead of Christmas trees lighted stars are hung on balconies, signifying the star that led the Magi to Bethlehem and Christ's birth place in the manger. In our younger days we made stars(some still do) with strips of bamboo, and stretched white paper over the star, and put a light in the star and hung it from our balconies. Nowadays one can buy all kinds of readymade stars that provide a colorful display, when a light bulb is placed inside and it is hung out on the balcony. Many homes put up strings of colored lights, but not as extensively as I used to see in the USA. The Christmas spirit comes late to Goa. Unlike the US and England where the stores and Malls are decorated with Christmas decorations as early as October, here one does not see many decorations until mid-December. One does not feel the pressure to give everyone a gift at Christmas, except perhaps a little toy to the young ones in one's own family. Instead, we bake and fry and stir all kinds of goodies, like Neuris, Kalkals, Bebinca, Dodol, etc. We send plates of goodies to our Hindu neighbors who unfailingly had sent us goodies for Ganesh and Diwali which precedes Christmas by a couple of months. Thank God we do not have the January blues that often result from over-spending for Gifts at Christmas ! People visit each other at Christmas. Of course it is quite warm during the day, but when one attends the Midnight mass, it is cool, as nights and early mornings are quite cool in December. On Christmas day itself, at our church in Socorro, the Catholic Youth Group organizes a party/sports day in the afternoon, with all kinds of party games, usually followed by Bingo. An enjoyable time is had by all. Sometimes Father Christmas (as Santa Claus is called here), makes his appearance. Filomena, I am so glad that your grand niece is thinking of Goa and how Christmas is celebrated here. If you need any more information or digital pictures, feel free to send me a private E-Mail. [Goanet]Believe It or Not!
Did you know that Anjuna shot to world fame in the late sixties because of Full Moon Night beach parties and Flea Market at Danddo? These activities were hosted by locals in coordination with foreigners/hippies. While Full Moon Night beach parties are quire rare these days, Flea Market continues to take place at Danddo on Wednesdays. People start arriving in Anjuna for the market as early as 06:00 a.m. and leave the place by late evening. The traffic on Anjuna roads on Wednesdays is simply unimaginable; we now need better/broader roads to accommodate such type of heavy traffic. Getting back to the market, there is a big difference between previously held Flea Market and the one today. Previously, the departing foreigners disposed of their foreign made belongings; nowadays, the market is filled with LOMANNIS and one mostly finds stuff from Rajasthan, Kashmir, Nepal, etc., instead of foreign made. To make matters worse, these Lomanni vendors are now photographed and presented on magazines as locals (Anjunians?! Anjuna Flea Market was so famous in those days that once when my brother and I visited the Opera House area (famous for car spare parts) in Bombay in 1976, we were stunned to find second hand, foreign made goods from Anjuna Flea Market on sale at two shops. When asked how they managed to get them, the owner told us that he often attended the Flea Market. He further told us that their staff in New Delhi branches also visited the market from time to time. GOA CELEBRATES FEAST OF "GOEMCHO SAIB": Since very early in the morning today all the traffic in Goa seemed to be moving towards Old Goa where the feast of St Francis Xavier was celebrated with traditional fervour. Archbishop Patriarch Raul Gonsalves presided over the High Mass which began at 10.30 am. In his homily Archbishop Gonsalves said that we have to change life for the better, modeled on the life of St Francis Xavier, who shunned worldly pleasures to serve God and society. Blasco Colaco, Apostolic Nuncio in South Africa, and Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes of Gandhinagar, also officiated at the High Mass, concelebrated by several priests. There were masses since 4 am in the morning at the vast pandal erected in the compound of the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The pandal was packed for every mass. All along the way to Old Goa, people were seen coming on foot, singing and praising the Lord. Others came for the last few novenas and were housed in the corridor of the Basilica. Around 700 pilgrims arrived yesterday afternoon from Kolhapur and Belgaum, on foot, led by Santaji Guru, who has been making the pilgrimage on foot since the lat 23 years. As soon as the pilgrims reached Old Goa, they were led for an Eucharistic celebration in the pandal by the 10 priests, who accompanied them during their pilgrimage. Re: [Goanet]INSULT TO GOANS
Dear Eddie, I do have a reason to believe that a pic was published of a rajasthani/kashmiri with the background picture of one of the GOAN beach, for a promotional cause as it would just not appear the sake of it, there must be a reason for it, it with that implication I still stand by what I say, never sat on a judgment chair only expressed my opinion which i am still expressing. No reason to duck your questions as they are quiet transparent to answer . Answers:= 1. Never seen a goan picture in Uganda on the same context as that of Abu Dhabi hence, premature to reply when time comes it can be replied. 2. Since these letter is addressed to me personally, replying to your personally, the issue right from inception was of the dress and not of person/s so please clarify when you say foreign tourist's dress or the Foreign tourist's as a group. As you rightly stressed on the dress in your third and fourth question. 3.The goan attire, which one if you ask me, shall be much obliged if you can mention to me which are the goan attires and I shall express my opinion of them and not a judgement. 4. The kashmiris and rajasthanis women and their attire are features of the so called markets and subject to popular photographs as mentioned by you , but cannot be features of Goan Tourism at large neither popular photographs for goa's billboards nor advertisements, they just happen to be shopping items since their attire are on sale in shops on those beaches. As when did i last go to goa, i happen to go there everyyear and even if i do not fly down through various sources of information I do get toknow. 5. Lastly eddie again you have got it wrong, there has been a mention that because of xyz community presence in goa, goa has become cheap or it is an insult to goans so why mince words and cofuse further, stick to the subject matter. Thanks eddie for your interest in my letter, look forward for some more questions. Nice day. Hi, I do not intend to challenge the knowledge and scholarship of Santosh but can't help mentioning that he sounds profoundly naive. How else does one interpret his statement "none of these (ayurvedic) practices have been scientifically validated as an effective treatment against any disease"? What he apparently means by "scientific validation" and "critical analysis" are US FDA certification. None of the points raised by Filomena makes any sense to him because he apparently shares the tunnel vision of his bosses in the US, for whom accomplishments from outside the Western world are just voodoo, or at best pseudo-science. While lapping up the unpalatable (and potentially dangerous) concoctions dished out as "food supplements" by some US companies, who market them to Third World countries including India at exorbitant prices, does it occur to Santosh that there are many things in this whole wide world -- in the realm of science, health and medicine -- to which the Western "critical analysts" have no clue at all? Re: [Goanet] Ayurveda not researched at all
Filomena wrote: > >I do not know what the parameters of "scientific research using the >objective scientific method" is. So I can't counter your assertion >that there are no such studies on ayurvedic treatments. > Hi Filomena: I have posted a lot on the scientific method in this and other Goan forums. This time around let me just state what is meant by it in one short paragraph. The Scientific method involves the following steps: 1. Observing a phenomenon. 2. Formulating a hypothesis to explain the phenomenon, based on pre- existing scientific knowledge. 3. Deriving experimentally testable predictions from the hypothesis. 4. Testing these predictions by performing experiments to determine if they hold true or not. 5. If all the predictions are true, the hypothesis becomes a valid scientific explanation for the phenomenon. 6. If any of the predictions turn out to be false, then the hypothesis is falsified, and steps 2 through 6 have to be repeated. > >Modern interest in Ayurveda is relatively new. Long-term studies are >probably only now under way. > I would love to know who is performing these studies, and exactly what they are about. > >They can only be managed if that is what you mean by "effective >treatment." > There are at least 100 diseases that can be prevented or cured by modern scientific medicine. Some of these used to be major killers in India when the only treatment available was Ayurveda and primitive medicine. I am talking about pneumonia, cholera, typhoid, dysentery, small pox, tuberculosis, malaria, plague, diphtheria, leprosy, syphilis, and so on. > >Ayurveda is a system of its own that says that disease is caused by >toxins and imbalances in the doshas. > This dictum is purely an imaginative generalization based on no objective evidence whatsoever. Over the entire 3000-year long history of Ayurveda, nobody ever tried to follow the scientific method to find out whether this hypothesis is right or wrong. What toxins are they talking about? Did they know what toxin caused tuberculosis? Could they cure it with good balanced nutrition? > >I agree entirely that modern research into ayurvedic treatments is >necessary. It is being done by westerners who have a healthy respect >for alternative systems of health practice. > This is not a question of respect. It is a question of prudence and honesty in making claims about effectiveness and reliability. One cannot claim that some form of treatment is "most researched and reliable" when people are just beginning to do that research, if indeed that is true. In the U.S., the National Institutes of Health has set up a separate center to conduct research in "alternative medicine" called National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. This move was initially motivated not by any respect from genuine scientists, but because of the "personal experiences" of two politicians. It has achieved no confirmation of the effectiveness of any kind alternative treatment despite the fact that this center and its predecessor have been operational for nearly a decade now. Only one ayurveda-related study has been funded through it so far. It is simply to set up an institute of Ayurveda in Coimbatore, India. > >But we can't simply discount them as totally "unscientific" or >discount the evidence of a good measure of success in keeping our >ancestors well and healthy. > I would love to see the evidence of this success in keeping our ancestors well and healthy. What I know from my reading of history of medicine is that our ancestors were dying of infectious diseases in the halcyon days of Ayurveda. For example, the population of Goa was 400,000 at the beginning of the 16th century. It was reduced to 40,000 in 1570 from common diseases that are now 100% preventable or curable. Archbishop Patriarch Raul Gonsalves presided over the High Mass which began at 10.30 am.
