Dear Alfred,

I believe you are correct. When you have the opportunity, please read Prof
Alok Rai, Hindi Nationalism, Orient Longman, New Delhi, 2000. It is
refereed to in some circles as the “MacDonnell Moment”

So, Alfredbab,...it depends WHAT one means by HINDI and WHAT one means
by URDU! Jawaharlal Nehru's Hindi was the same as his Urdu.

But that was then!

It also depends on WHAT is meant by KONKANI! rather WHICH Konkani.

I would like to know (for purly personal reasons) WHY Jose and Joao became
Zuze ani Zuam in the new S-Konkani - while JESU remained Jesu!

So much for politricks and politicians.

In closing, ALLOW me to say a THANK YOU to Diana (Flower) for her post on
the "Rock and a Hard place" choices available in South Goa. In my humble
opinion - excellent advice

BTW: There is a non-South Goan who opined (loudly - but privately) that One
Swallow (Gilbert's post) did NOT make a summer. This non-South Goan contends
that DEMOCRACY is VIBRANT in Goa.

Ha!

On the other hand.I could be wrong. After all, I am here & the non-South

[Goanet]Fwd: Caju Feni by Salus Correia

From: Salus Correia <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 Subject: Caju Feni
  To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello Joseph,

I have read your article about caju feni with interest! Well I do feel sorry
for you and your precious liver which bore the brunt of your search for good
caju feni!

I left Goa in 1999, and for some years before that was professionally in the
purchasing line. While working for a company that manufactured after shave
lotions and colognes in Goa, it was my job to procure large amounts of
rectified spirit for our products. At that time, the sale of rectified spirit
was controlled by the government, and we were issued permits which were dished
out as favours, at the discretion of the concerned minister for industries, who
used to convene meetings of all bulk alcohol consumers to discuss forecasts
etc.

The first time I attended one such meeting, I was shocked to find that I was
surrounded by the liquor barons! And I managed to have a chat with Mr
Shirodkar, from Agencia Real that day. I enquired as to why he and the other
barons wanted so much of rectified spirit. His reply to me still rings in my
ears: Baba re, feniac re. Portuguese tempar dongrar cazu asleat ani te
zaddamchem cuidad ghetale dongorkar. Atamchem tempar, mele te dongorkarachem
ani tanche bhurge. Dongor padd assa, punn feni piupe dha vantenim chodlea!

And he went on to tell me how they manage to procure small quantities of
genuine caju feni from their sources, and how they used that small quantity as
the essence with rectified spirit. And he also told me how some unscrupulous
manufacturers made caju feni which was 100 per cent rectified spirit, with caju
essence manufactured by some Bombay chemical essence companies! Apparently
that is the cheap feni that seems to flow in the bars in Goa today. So it
should not be a surprise if you find feni substandard etc. Good feni is good,
and does not give you the side effects that you mentioned.

Fortunately, there are still some good sources of caju feni in Goa. I like the
feni distilled by the priests at the SVD monastery at Raia, and also from the
Salesian farm at Sulcurna. Maybe you could try this stuff, and see the
difference for yourself. These priests use some modern techniques for crushing
the fruit and also for distillation. And that does make a lot of a difference,
considering hygienic conditions etc...

Enjoy your feni!!!
Regards,
Salus Correia

Not really. I believe Amir Khusro first wrote Urdu couplets, and that was before the
British. Urdu and Hindi both have origins in Khari Boli, a language spoken in the
Gangetic plains.

[Goanet]Perplexing Panaji.

2004-04-14 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear Goanetters/BSG members,

I was standing at the foot of the 1904 heritage cross near the Ferry Jetty
and could not help recalling Prajal Sakhardande's article on it in the
Navhind Times some time back. There was a JCB working IN THE RIVER
Mandovi. At hand were Dr. Claude Alvares of the Goa Foundation and Dr.Arvind
G.Untawale, Secretary of the Mangrove Society of India and the IPP of BSG.
Both of them are members of the Goa State Coastal Zone Management Authority
or CZMA constituted by the Supreme Court of India.. They were in telephonic
contact with the Member-Secretary of CZMA. The subject of discussion:
erosion of the 'authority' by illegal 'dredging'[ if excavation by
earthmovers can be called that] apparently for hold your breathto
see films better! The works are being executed by AFCONS on behalf of Goa
State Infrastructural Development Corporation Ltd. to create a four lane
road to see the IFFI take off. The rest of Goa is at the cross roads like
that famous moron with a knife and a pistol...not sure whether to cut across
or shoot across the IFFI divide.

On 14 March,2004, I had stated at a public meeting that I was FOR the Goa
IFFI and that I did not see any logical connection between the IFFI and the
the earlier aborted four-lane project that the Goa Government is again
pregnant with. The government is being rather secretive about the parentage
of this new [mis]conception while being blatant about the pregnancy. The
obvious joy of having the IFFI is as crass as that of a spinster who flaunts
a huge belly. It is not really funny when a Government works on Sundays,
Good Fridays and under the cover of darkness like some petty criminal. If a
Government breaks the CRZ regulations and destroys the mangroves that it has
notified as 'protected' just because the State Legislative Assembly
elections are three years away and the political opposition is rather
toothless, how does it become better than a zopadpatti dweller or pimp who
illegally and illicitly erects a pucca house on a long week-end? Is this
what 'good governance' is all about?

Viva Goa.
Miguel

... original 'raw' text of the article in North Goa Plus :[This is not a

Perpetuating Panjim
By Miguel Braganza

Panjim is a charming town that has been the capital of Goa for more than two
centuries. It is a quaint little place that has ornate houses in Campal and
Altinho, the ancient houses of Mhamai Kamat, a worldfamed "Latin Quarter" in
Fontainhas, Communidade Building, Boca da vaca, the church, Paco Patriarchal
(residence of the Archbishop Patriach) and above all, the striking edifice
of Adil Shah's Summer Palace straddling the River Mandovi. It is a town
worth conserving -- even restoring -- for the generations to come.

Those who love the town, and know a little bit about how the water of the
River Mandovi behaves, would undoubtedly be happy to see a JCB excavator at
work on the debris of the ill fated Nehru Bridge. The debris was senselessly
dumped in the river during the 1980's near Adil Shah's palace that has
served as the Government Secretariat since 1763. Poor garbage management led
to the proliferation of rats and plague in Velha Goa (Old Goa). The shift to
Nova Goa, that we now call Panaji, became inevitable. A few more years of
silt deposition due to the bridge debris in the River Mandovi would have
ensured the flooding and death of lowlying stretches of Panjim like Ponte de
Linhares, Corte de Oitero, Rua de Ourem, MG Road and DB Road all the way to
Miramar. Signs of things to come have been seen during the last few monsoons
and forgotten by the start of the annual festive season. Public memory is
shorter than one thinks although, Mother Nature gives periodic warnings
before it strikes.

A little bit about how a "river" like the Mandovi behaves may not be
entirely out of place. During the monsoon period, it is like any river that
flows into the sea and deposits silt at its mouth. It should normally have
formed a delta. It has not. And with good reason.
The 'river' Mandovi is actually an "estuary". During the post-monsoon
period, it receives very little water from its tributaries. The level of
water in the Mandovi falls below the level of water in the Arabian Sea as
the tide begins to rise. The saline water flows into the 'river' upto a
distance upstream where the fresh water level matches the level of the tide.
It is due to this phenomenon that the monsoon water does not drain out of
Panjim at high tide. It also forms a deposit -- the famous "barro da Aguada"
across the river mouth.
During the monsoon period the water in the river is red with silt. What the
barges do in summer, the muddy waters do in the monsoon. A "spar" formed by
stone or concrete deposited in the river makes the water to slow down and
deposit the silt. It also diverts the water and makes it scour or erode
another area, quite often, the opposite bank. The river loses depth and
becomes shallow. It overflows its banks -- and floods. A flood is s

[Goanet]Divar shows a better way.

2004-04-14 Thread Miguel Braganza
After a long time, I am once again happy to be associated with a school
project which is locally conceived, locally driven, locally funded and
locally executed. It is a formula that is sustainable...that has the
ingredients of success.

This experiment is at the island of Divar in the Mandovi, an island that
has not yet forgotton the flooding of its roads when man's greed made him
breach the bunds for pisciculture and leabve them to the vagaries of the
estuarine flow and the effects of the iron-ore laden barges that ply the
river from the hinterland to the port. There are two Panchayats [
Goletim-Navelim and Piedade], two communidades and two Bonderam festivals[
Piedade and Malar/ San Mathias]. There are two schools ,too. There is one
summer camp for all of the island.

The project is all inclusive: the students, their parents, other villagers,
teachers, ex-teachers, locals, bhaile, NRIs, non-resident natives[ the
Menezes clan of Divar spread all over Goa and India, for example] are all
involved in the project. A raffle has been floated to 1.raise funds , 2.to
inform all the villagers about the camp and 3. to involve all the villagers.
Anyone who has bought a raffle has contributed to the camp. Even the one
that has not bought a raffle tickect would have been approached by a student
and hence been informed about the event. Many who were not part of the
planning process have volunteered to be a part of its execution. The island
is aware of the summer camp.

The camp caters to all needs: from vocational skills like tailoring and
gardening to home skills like cooking to environmental skills like
vermicomposting ,EM and garbage management to self defence through taekwondo
to games like football and Kho-kho . A library is open to cater to the
reading habit and a computer lab to learn a skill that has become as much a
part of life today as writing skills. The primary school children have not
been forgotten. They are learning not to have stage fear by being involved
in stage items like song and dance. The teachers are not forgotten either:
they are learning computer skills, a thing that some of their city
counterparts have not accessed in their schools.

The wonderful thing about the camp is that it is voluntary for both, the
trainers and the participants. Each student or adult has chosen the mix of
learning opportunities like s/he would have chosen at a buffet party or a 'a
la carte' lunch . There are no fees and no honoraria. There is no hierarchy,
no pecking order in the implementation of the project. One can contribute to
its enrichment ...and it is welcomed. I have committed my involvement in the
project over the next academic year and beyond. There is great potential to
replicate this in other schools in Goa. Imitation is ,afterall, the best
form of flattery. I am hoping that the DSE adopts this pattern in schools
that do not have their own programmes as yet. Other managements can do
likewise. There is in-house talent in most schools [teachers, students,
ex-students, parents of students, neighbours of the school] that is waiting
to be tapped. Some schools/colleges like St.Francis Xavier HS-Siolim,
St.Britto HS-Mapusa, St.Xavier HS-Moira, Carmel HSS-Nuvem, St.Xavier's
College-Mapusa and the Government colleges at Sanquelim, Khandola and Quepem
have used these talents successfully. St.Brittos HS-Mapusa and
St.Xavier-Moira have such programmes going on right nowabsolutely free
of charge for the students. It builds up their students, creates a sense of
belonging and genuine pride in belonging to the institution. Other
institutions can do as well or even better.

Viva Goa.

Nerul’s strange plight...
--
No sooner than summer sets in, we villagers of Nerul —
especially around Batier — do not get proper water supply.
To worsen matters, since the last few days, whatever trickle
of water was available stopped totally. We asked the technician
stationed at Nerul to take a look. He suspected something was
blocking the flow of water. He unscrewed the pipe that was
connected to the main pipe, from the tap connection, and
found what we thought was a balloon.
After he extracted it, we realized it was a used condom that
had a knot tied in it. How is it possible for such a thing to find
its way into the potable water supply system? What about the
health hazards, including a possible exposure to the AIDS virus
with the entry of such foreign bodies into our water life-lines?

Dear Alfred,

Thanks for the input. You are absolutely right, I had that from the horse's

detainees were treated quite leniently in Portugal.

Now my friend Ole Xac will say the *traitors* didn't deserve that treatment!

The People's Representation Act must be amended so that every ballot
in every election gives the voter, at the bottom of the list of contestants, the
option: *NONE OF THE ABOVE.*

Only when NONE OF THE ABOVE *wins* the election, forcing a fresh poll,
will political parties be compelled to field worthwhile candidates -- not, as
at present, *winnable* horses.

I think it was the redoubtable Khushwant Singh who had mooted this idea
years ago. Political parties obviously won't act. Maybe the judiciary would,
on grounds on reasonableness? Maybe Goanetters entitled to vote here
could sign an online petition, under the aegis of iPetition (www.ipetitions.com)
or some other net mechanism, to be submitted to a High Court?

Just thinking. Regards/Valmiki

2004-04-14 Thread flower
Yes, South Goa voters are in a very unenviable predicament But remember, its
hard times not only for voters in S. Goa, but probably all over India and I
think we have no alternative but to make some hard choices. Dodging a
problem never did anyone any good. Politics has sunk to an abysmal low where
parties give the electorate the choice between the devil and the deep blue
sea. All we can do is to cast our vote for the less dangerous evil. In fact,
that's what electoral politics has now come to mean for me. But in my
opinion, each and everyone of us must do their bit and vote however
distasteful it may be.

So cheers, put a smile on your face, put hope in your heart and go out and
vote.

If I err not, the only time Goa's first Legislative Assembly

What were you incarcerated for? :-)

[Goanet]Must Read....

2004-04-14 Thread Iona Gomes
A non-resident Indian in UAE shares her thoughts & experience... quite
too long but rather interesting.
-

I was doing reasonably well at my place of work in India. We were
happy in our little flat in noisy, polluted Mumbai. The three-hour
journey, to and fro from work, did not faze us. Then, my husband got
this irresistible job offer from Dubai!
I joined him eight months ago, bang in the middle of Dubai's
terribly long summer. I just knew I would land a challenging job within
a month. After all, I was this competent high achiever! Besides, life
would be better there if not at par with India. After all, Dubai is
'phoren' and the land of no income tax.
Today, I am grappling with the distasteful task of job-hunting in
the Middle East. One of the popular ways of doing this is through the
famous Gulf Appointments. It was here that I first came across
advertisements like 'Wanted HR Manager -- US/UK/SA/EUR/NZL Only.'
I was shocked. Why not just say: 'Wanted HR Manager -- No Asians
Please. We only want to hire white-skinned people'.
I spent the first two months receiving calls from agents who
offered jobs with meagre salaries. Wake up and smell the coffee, I was
told -- Asians come cheap.
There is a clear disparity in wages and perks given to people of
different nationalities doing the same job. A friend of mine works for
one of the finest hotels in the world. She is Asian, so she stays in a
campus built for Asian employees in an industrial area. White employees
doing the same job are entitled to accommodation in the city.
My husband was the only person I could vent my frustrations on.
The poor man was subjected to constant tirades on how this was the most
humiliating experience of my life and how shocked I was at this blatant
display of racism. I wondered about the future of organisations that,
even today, hire on the basis of colour instead of competence. To
advertise in this manner in a national newspaper was, I thought, a
blatant slap on the face.
This attitude was not limited to the labour market.
Take entertainment. My husband and I enjoy going out. What we did
not initially know was that certain nightclubs and bars here are
'strictly white.' In our ignorance, we once took a German friend to a
club where a Nigerian at the door asked us for our identification. We
were then asked to pay AED 200 per head to just enter the place! Even
as all this was happening, white folk were walking in without being
stopped or asked any questions. It was our first experience of this kind
and we were deeply humiliated. Our German friend was visibly upset and
could not look us in the eye for the rest of the evening.
No one talks about this kind of segregation, even though it has
been going on for ages. A quick glance at the newspapers and magazines
here will reveal many articles on lifestyle and shopping, but hardly
anything on serious social issues. Asians, meanwhile, avoid these places
to save themselves the humiliation.
I try to rationalise what is happening, but cannot come up with a
reasonable answer. Asians have lived in Dubai for more than 40 years.
They've built some of its finest buildings and hotels. They've been
loyal to their employers and respectful to its citizens. The West has
only noticed Dubai recently. Yet, white-skinned people exert a huge
influence here and their perceived superiority supersedes logic.
I eventually found a temporary job in a predominantly Asian
environment. Though the going has been good, I am painfully aware of the
experience that awaits me once my term here is complete.
  Yet, there is hope.
I believe Indians are second to none in the world.
Secondly, every business looks at the profit line. Any good
business will always explore ways to get more for less. I may come
cheaper not because I offer more for less but because my expectations
are realistic and match what organisations can afford to pay. Today,
most organisations here pay far more for far less. Sooner or later, they
will be forced to realise that brains and hard work matter more than the
colour of one's skin.
Besides, not all organisations and people are discriminatory. I
have interacted with organisations that possess a great deal of
cross-cultural sensitivity and can truly be called equal opportunity
employers. I have been fortunate enough to make friends with people from
all nationalities and have found them to respectful and tolerant of each
other.
I can hardly blame the bouncers I encounter because employees
simply do what they are told. Where there is demand, there will be
supply. When regulars at clubs express a desire for a place that caters
to 'their kind,' when locals listen to words coming out of a Westerner's
mouth with rapt attention but disregard an Asian saying the same thing,
establishments will toe the line.
Why am I still in Dubai? Well, I left my family and frien

Take heart, Mr Jogi, you can get better too
   By: Kavita Krishnan
   April 14, 2004
http://web.mid-day.com/news/city/2004/april/81027.htm

Last November Mohammed Arif (20) was riding his motorbike home from classes
when he collided head-on with a BEST bus. "I don't remember anything. When I
woke up, I was in a hospital bed and could only move my neck," said Arif.
The accident left him paralysed from the neck down.

For people like Arif and former Chattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi, who
sustained injuries to the cervical cord, Sion's Lokmanya Tilak Municipal
General Hospital offers a glimmer of hope.

Housed there is the Neurosciences Research Centre, where doctors are working
on stem cell treatment for paraplegics, as part of a three-year project
funded by the Government of India. The treatment, they hope, will enable
patients to walk again.

"We are trying to introduce modified stem cells (see box) into the damaged
area of the spine, which will then regenerate and form lost connections," Dr
Alok Sharma, head of Neurosurgery at the hospital, said.

"Spinal cord injury is like cutting a telephone line. With the brain's
connection to the body lost, the parts cannot function," Dr Sharma
explained. "These cells will provide that connection," he added.

"We have already developed our own stem cell line. We are presently trying
to differentiate the stem cell into neurons or nerve cells,"
neuropathologist Dr Prerna Badhe said. "We should start animal experiments
in about three months," she added.

Arif's condition has also improved greatly in the past few months, thanks to
treatment at the hospital's Paraplegic Foundation. Referred by doctors, Arif
and a family member moved into the rehabilitation centre-cum-home.

As is customary, social workers at the centre prepared a personal profile
for Arif. "We talk to the patient, immediate family, friends, employers and
prepare a detailed file on the person," said founder-president Sulabha
Varde. Arif was then given an idea of the improvement he could expect.

He underwent regular physiotherapy, occupational therapy, acupressure and
acupuncture sessions. "Patients also undergo weekly group therapy sessions
and participate in prayer meetings," Varde said.

Still confined to the wheelchair, Arif said, "I can already lift my hand. I
have seen others leave, some walking out on crutches. I hope to do the same
some day," he said.

Stem cells

Stem cells are unspecialised cells that can renew themselves and
differentiate into cells with specified functions.

Put simply, they can be grown into bones, nerves, heart tissue, pancreas or
blood cells.

Research has already shown that paralysed mice injected with stem cells can
move their limbs.

Got fish? cows eat herring for new milk
Wed 14 April, 2004 06:24 AM

By Roberta Rampton
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - Some landlocked Canadian cows are enjoying a
little seafood with their hay and grain so they can produce a new kind of
milk being touted for its benefits for the brain, eyes and nerves.
The milk, produced by herring-fed cows in Ontario, provides a fatty acid
also common in salmon, trout and mackerel to diets of people who don't eat
enough fish, said Larry Milligan, a researcher at the University of Guelph,
which developed the milk.
But it doesn't taste fishy, Milligan said on Tuesday.
"I don't detect any difference whatsoever from regular milk," he said.
The milk is sold in Ontario by Neilson Dairy, a subsidiary of George Weston
Ltd., Canada's largest food processor and distributor.
At C$5.29 per four litres, it's more than 20 percent pricier than regular
milk, but similar in cost to calcium-enriched milk.
The fatty acid, called docoshexaenoic acid, or DHA, is an omega-3 fatty acid
that is also found in omega-3 eggs, nuts and canola oil.
Ninety grams (three ounces) of cooked Atlantic salmon contains 1.2 grams of
DHA, a week's worth of what the body needs, according to the U.S. Department
of Agriculture.
Drinking three cups of the fortified homogenised milk provides 0.06 grams of
DHA, Neilson said.
Children can get almost 60 percent of recommended DHA by drinking two cups
of the new milk a day, it said.
But one food activist said the nutritional claims are a red herring used for
marketing.
"I'm frankly so sceptical of all the dietary claims: one thing is good for
you, and then it's not," said Brewster Kneen, publisher of The Ram's Horn
journal, which rails against biotechnology and multinational food processors
while promoting organic farming.
Kneen said cows are best left to turning grass and hay into foods humans can
eat rather than eating designer diets.
"Why are we taking herring, which is a good human food, and putting it
through a cow? This is very strange," Kneen said.
Milligan said fish meal has been used for protein in livestock diets for
decades and is safe.
"DHA milk was put through all the possible analytical measurements you could
even imagine for Health Canada (the country's health ministry) and was
approved," he said.

outflow of provocative communal comments, I fully
understand your attempt to try and superficially paper

My suggestion is that being condescending and

[Goanet-news]CYBERWATCH: Reading between the lines (By Mayabhushan Nagvenkar)

2004-04-14 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Reading between the lines * BY MAYABHUSHAN NAGVENKAR

The official website of Bharatiya Janata Party's Goa unit (www.goabjp.org)
really seems to have taken it's best efforts in introducing its candidates
for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Take the party's candidate for South Goa Ramakant Soiru Angle for example.
Mr Angle's biodata appears to be a confluence of opposite interests, between
which he seems to be performing an outlandish balancing act.

To illustrate, click on a link in the know your candidate section that leads
you to Mr Angle's long list of particulars. Under the header 'political and
social' status, the fourth listing informs us that Mr Angle has been, "a
member of the Consultative Committee Environment and Forest".

Allegations, that it was only Mr Shirpad Naik who was Goa's public face in
the corridors of power are rendered untrue. While critics had alleged that
Mr Angle was a 'non performer', the MP was also doing his unsung bit for
Goa, on the crucial committee on Environment and Forest.

The committee would do well to listen to his advice, considering the fact
that Mr Angle has considerable experience in the 'protecting' forests and
'preserving' environment as the subsequent paragraph on Mr Angle's resume
reveals,

"Heading a Business organization with 5 proprietary concerns related to
Mining Industries and also a promoter of 4 companies dealing in bulk drugs,
pharmaceuticals, building construction and ferro-manganese."

It simply showcases the diversity of the person's character. That, being a
businessman steeped in mining interests -- rather five proprietary concerns
related to the industry -- Mr Angle can so easily don the hat of a member of
a crucial consultative committee on Environment and Forests.

There is more to come. Mr Angle has also been appointed member of Goa State
Environment Protection Council. It is generally understood that mining and
environment are opposites on the axis of any logical debate. Somehow Mr
Angle proves this long-standing dictum wrong.

Then there is the link, which takes you to North Goa candidate Shripad
Naik's resume. It thankfully lists out all his five ministries in the
Central government ministry in chronological order.

The portfolios being Agriculture, Shipping, Civil aviation, Road Transport
and National Highways and Finance, lest anyone forget the order of
progression.

Both the resumes go a long way in indicating that the duo are actually as
different a chalk and cheese. While Mr Angle merely heads sports
associations, with no visible reference to any active participation in
sports activity, in comparison Mr Naik is a been-there-done-that kind of a
persona.

To be more graphic, Mr Angle heads three comparatively obscure sports bodies
like the Goa Handball Association, Sanmitra sports club and the Baseball
Association of Goa. He serves as secretary for the Gymnastics Association
(Goa) and has long standing affiliations with the Salcete Football Club,
Cuncolim gymkhana and Taekwondo Association.

Mr Naik on the other hand, is an ex NCC cadet with a 'C' Certificate to his
credit, along with an award for 'best shooting'. He has also played volley
ball and kabbadi at the state level. The merit list finally ends with the
mention of him winning the award of the best swimmer in a state level
competition.

The only other interesting read on the website is a column "bulls-eye"
written by Julio D'Silva former journalist and ex- personal assistant to Mr
Ramakant Angle, who raises the foreign origin issue vis a vis Sonia Gandhi.

The article raises a question as ridiculous as, "In the first place if the
Congress President Sonia Gandhi truly loves India and Indianess, why is she
still called Madame which is an European or rather Western term?"

Surely, if one goes by this logic, the writer would surely take affront to
anyone calling him by the title "Sir". Deservedly or otherwise!
