[Goanet]Origin of the Hindu
Sandeep Heble, in his othewise well-written post, does not say how the word 'Hindu' originated. It has its origins in Persion. The Iranians called the Sindhu River 'Hindhu' as 'ha' is pronounced 'sa' in Persion. Thus the people who lived on the banks of the Sindhu came to be known as Hindus. As he rightly mentions, the word originally had no religious connotations whatsoever. RE:[Goanet]CRIME WATCH:Cortalim kidnapping & murder has a blue film connection ?
I'm really surprised that nobody's reacting to this news article. It really shocked me. Just as we think everything is fine here in our Goa, something like this comes around. My Brother was recently telling us about a lot of his former hostel roommates in Mumbai telling him something going around India, especially in the Metros called 'Goa Porn'. My mother has heard about it when she was in Kerala too. It's supposed to be filmed with a handy cam, with people holding torches for lighting. What's more shocking is that it that some known goons can be seen in the backdrop of the film, and a son of a well known South Goan politician is supposed to be involved. Last year I came across a Goan guy on the net from the Middle East who said that he was surprised to see some porn which was filmed on some Goan Beaches. I think you can read about this if you try googling for it. It's really sad that these things happen. Can nothing be done about it? Have others heard about similar stories? How can people get away with these things? Bad enough that Goa is associated with drugs, trance and alcoholics and Goa Ghutka..but please...no Goa Porn. Clinton.. - FIR against trio in Cortalim kidnapping - Verna police on April 24, registered a FIR case against three accused including a woman for kidnapping a 24-year-old girl working in a saloon at Cortalim. The accused who have been booked under Section 341, 363 r/w 34 of IPC are Shailesh Padte from Sindolem-Sancoale, Felix alias Botty from Cortalim and one Maria. Meanwhile, the Cortalim villagers have expressed shock over the incident. The villagers alleged that the accused Maria whom they claim is from Calangute is involved in "blue" movie filming and is politically well connected. Speaking to Herald, the villagers led by Mathew Simon condemned the Verna police for not tracking down the culprits even after 10 days of the incident. He alleged that Shailesh had a criminal background and did not rule out a nexus between the kidnapping incident and that of murder of Maria Vaz from Novo-Palmar, Cortalim whose body was thrown in a creek at Panjim, two months ago.The Panjim police, he said, had promised that they were close in achieving a breakthrough. However with no solution in sight the police may have buried the case under the carpet, he added. He warned that the villagers would be forced to take law in their hands, if both the incidents were not solved and would shortly hold a meeting to decide future course of action. --- HERALD 6/5/05 page 3 -- Clinton Vaz__ .Environment..GNU/Linux..Wildlife..Philately.. [Goanet]Re: Exchange Rates - May 4/2004
Hi Juanita, These rates, as mentioned, are the current actual exchange rates in the market. They should be taken as guidance, instead of actual rates. The forex dealers do have to make some money in the transaction, and the difference between the actual rate and the rate that you get is their commission. So what you need to do is ask around for the forex dealer who has the lowest commission. You probably could get the lowest commission deals in the grey market, but it's very risky. First, it's illegal, you don't have a receipt, and you could get cheated into getting counterfeit currency. [Goanet]NGOs protest brings work on Mungul Bridge to grinding halt
-- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660 Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Press Clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/ -- - NGO's protest brings work on Mungul Bridge to grinding halt -- All work on the Mungul Bridge - linking Margao to the coastal belt of Colva came to a complete halt on Thursday morning after consumer rights activists demanded forthwith stoppage of construction activity. The activists attached to 'Goa Can' and Betalbatim Civic and Consumer Forum maintained that undertaking bridge work on the eve of monsoons would cause tremendous disruption and dislocation of life for residents of the localities of Mungul, Pedda Benaulim, Colva, Seraulim and Per-Seraulim, Bealbatim, Majorda and Murda since the bridge connects them to Margao City. They pointed out that the new causeway has been built at a much lower level, apprehending the river will wash many feet above the road in first rains. This new road, they claimed, would serve the post-monsoon season but certainly not during the rains. Earlier in the day, a delegation of the activists led by Goa Can Co-ordinator, Roland Martins called on the district Collector, South J B Singh and highlighted the utter neglect of safety measures at all public construction sites in the city. When contacted, the Collector opined that time was too short for commencement of bridge construction work at Mungul in view of the monsoons. "I will write a letter to the contractor and the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation on the matter," he said. In fact, one could see labourers engaged in closing the 60 inch trench dug on both sides of the bridge, while a vehicle lifted away the construction material dumped at the site this evening. Inquiries revealed that the contractor has been ordered to stop work pending further orders. Meanwhile, the Betalbatim Civic and Consumer Forum has lodged a complaint with the Margao police regarding the closure of the old bridge at Mungul and diversion of traffic to the new causeway laid to the side of the old bridge since the last three or four days. They requested the police to ensure that traffic is resumed on the bridge as per the assurance given by GSIDC and that the bridge is not demolished before the rains. The new bridge on the Margao-Colva road was supposed to be ready by May 31, by this deadline, only the demolition of the bridge would have been completed" which would cause hardships to villagers, stated BCCF convenor Xavier Cota. Cota also referred to the hardships faced by the residents of Navelim, Rawanfond, St. Jose de Areal, Paroda, Quepem, Sanvordem, Sanguem due to the demolition of the Rawanfond bridge, which he claimed was done without following the set procedure. --- HERALD 7/5/04 page 3 --- === GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 2252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.goadesc.org -- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy === ## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##

[Goanet]DECISION MAKING
The story given below is quite interesting and really gives us an insight into DECISION MAKING Which one will you choose? A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train came, and you were just beside the track interchange. You could make the train change its course to the disused track and saved most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way? Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make Analyze the situation. Think and reflect... Decided your answer Now ... go ahead Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. To save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place? Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was. This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him. To make the proper decision is not try to change the course of the train because the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens. If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids. While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one. "Remember that what's right isn't always popular... and what's popular isn't always right." Everybody makes mistakes; that's why they put erasers on pencils. [Goanet]Hindutva-use and misuse
Hindutva-use and misuse In ancient India, the word Hindu was never an orthodox religious word but was instead a liberal one having a strong geographical and cultural meaning attached to it. Interestingly, the words "Hindu" and "Hinduism" were not Sanskrit words. No Hindu ever coined them. Ancient Hindus were even unaware of such terminologies for a very long time. In ancient India you had either a yogi, a bhakta, a tantric, a sanyasi, a sankhya vadin, a vedantin, a lokayata, a rishi, a muni, a pandit, a pragna, a yogini, a devi, a swami, a Buddha, a Jain, but no Hindu. The British first started associating the word 'Hindu' with religion. 'Hindu' otherwise was a very secular word meant to define and distinguish all the people of the Indian subcontinent. All these people would come from different regions, would speak different languages, belong to different economic and social strata, but even then were all united by a common cultural bond. They knew clearly that the tradition that was binding them together, i.e. the Hindu identity, was before them and would remain forever after them. The Supreme Court of India, in a landmark Judgment on Hindu and Hindutva, observed how these terms are indicative more of a way of life of the Indian people and are not confined merely to describe persons practicing the Hindu religion as a faith. The Supreme Court further said that these terms are not necessarily to be understood and construed narrowly, confined only to the strict Hindu religious practices unrelated to the culture and ethos of the people of India or depicting the way of life of the Indian people. That being the genesis of the term 'Hindu', it is a cruel irony that 'Hindutva', which stems from the word Hindu and simply means principles of Hinduism, is today used as an instrument of hate and terror. Hindutva must be used and understood as a synonym of Indianisation having a positive, cultural, geographic and Nationalistic message attached to it. That is what Savarkar, who coined this term, wanted it to be. Sadly, it is today used not as a tool of social unity but as a trident of political intimidation.
