Gilbert Lawrence responds:
And silly me! All this time, I thought that Goa was the prime native
land for the mangoes. And Goans were the world experts on how to tackle
this king of fruits. I guess the Bhujies and Kutchies are way ahead of
us - Goenkars, (with export ani professional promos in English); while
we are busy making pun ani phun of what is/should be our livelihood.
Arre!!! The story of our lives, murre. :=))

Helga do Rosario Gomes:
You were before your time Cecil! Now there is a CD that teaches it all!!
If only you had not made that bad pun which wasn't really a pun -
especially for Konkani speakers because as Jorge would have told/scolded
you- you did not have the accents where they should have been. In fact
you had no accents at all!!!

BHUJ: As the Kesar mango, grown in Kutch, becomes a rage in the Queen's
land, farmers here have hit upon an innovative way by which to teach the
Brits a thing or two about how to savour the king of fruits. CDs
demonstrating how to eat mangoes are being played in fruit stores across
the UK and are even distributed free along with the 'petis'.

Yes Gabe, I liked that one too very much. As for the whole version of Malhão
instead of just a clip you could buy the CD 'Portuguese Folk Music' on
amazon.com. It has the song and costs about 14$

I am saddened to hear of Eustaquio's untimely death. I
had the pleasure of meeting him at a Goanetter's
meeting in Goa in the late 90s. When I met him, he
seemed very normal, and it did not strike me that
within his modest figure lay a great footballing
giant.

In retrospect however, it should have been obvious
that Eustaquio was a great sportsman and a great lover
of sporting events. We on goanet have been flooded
with his often depressing sports updates of the
continuing defeats of India's football team (eg.
India's recent loss to Japan 7-0) or of India's tennis
stars. Perhaps it is this recent string of defeats
that finally did it for him. Alternatively it could be
the impending agony and shame of the nearing summer
Olympics that finally convinced him that life on an
Indian passport was not worth living for.

May his soul rest in peace.

Marlon

Gabe, would you be looking for MALHÃO?
I got the lyrics off the internet and there is a site which gives the tune
and its at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/9175/the_page.html#Music
There are plenty of sites that describe how to dance it. I googled MALHÃO
and I got tons of music. Very nostalgic!

Que vida é a tua?

Passear na rua
Ó malhão malhão
Quem te deu as meias?

Ó trim tim tim
Tinha as pernas feias

Stadiums not ready? Who said so? Euro 2004 starts tomorrow (12th June) with
Portugal-Greece at the "Estadio do Dragao" (Dragon Stadium, belonging to
"Futebol Clube do Porto"), Oporto, at 5 p.m. and Spain-Russia at the
"Estadio do Algarve" (Algarve Stadium), Faro-Loule, at 7.45 p.m. Then on the
13th, while we vote for Portugal's future members of the European
Parliament, Switzerland will face Croatia at 5 p.m. at the "Estadio Dr.
Magalhaes Pessoa", Leiria and France will face England at 7.45 p.m. at the
"Estadio da Luz" (Stadium of Light, belonging to "Sport Lisboa e Benfica"),

Melwin Anthony Vaz, who was told by Alfred (in his poetic way) that he
could not possibly get a house in Saligao for two lakhs, replied to Alfred
thus:

>Hey dude my ancestors have been livin since time immemorial at nig vaddo
>saligao.the only reason i am looking out for a house in goa cos iwant to
>have my own personal holiday home
---
Melwyn mah dude
No need to be so rude
Listen maan, listen to da beat
What Alfred says, stands up to da heat
Two lakhs don't get you no livin' quarters
Go freshen ya self in da Salmona waters
Ten lakhs mah maan dats da goin rate
Including da compound wall and gate
Ah see you got ancestors in town
That don mean nutting. Payment cash down
Make sure da title is abso-lutely clean
Check it out maan, Form One and Fourteen
Dude I'm gonna make you sweat,
Sweat until you can sweat no more
Then ah'll put off the fan
Then you will sweat some more!
---
No hard feelings Melwyn. Just kidding!
Best of luck in your search but do raise your budget a bit. A decent enough
house in a small plot in Saligao would be a minimum of 8 lakhs, in my
opinion. How come no Saligao Netters are giving Melwyn any guidance in
these matters and leaving 'advice giving' to overnight instant rap artists
from Aldona and poets from Sweden?

Cheers!

REHABILITATION PACKAGE FOR SEX WORKERS: A rehabilitation package for 247
commercial sex workers from Baina who have opted to turn a new leaf in their

clothing, shelter, health, educational and vocational training facilities at
Ribandar. The shifting of these women, young and old, and some along with
their families, is scheduled to be done next week at the Old Bal Niketan
premises at Ribandar, which bears a new painted and clean look. In all 247

SHIFTING BAINA SEX WORKERS TEMPORARY: CM: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar
Parrikar, told a delegation of Ribandar residents accompanied by St Cruz

Kadamba Plateau for a few months as a part of rehabilitation package. (NT)

RIBANDAR RESIDENTS OPPOSE SEX WORKERS: A delegation of Ribandar residents
yesterday called on Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and submitted a
memorandum registering their strong protest against the Goa government's
decision to rehabilitate the Baina based sex workers at Ribandar.Adv Aires
Rodrigues has wondered as to how the inmates of the red light area who were
a taboo in Baina and bad for the residents of that locality, would be any
good for Ribandar and warned that the government would not be allowed to
create another Baina at Ribandar. (H)

INTEREST-FREE LOANS TO STUDENTS: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar,
yesterday said the government is currently working out a system on the lines
of interest-free loans for the professional college students, wherein the
poor and the needy students of the non-professional colleges would also
receive the same benefit. (NT)

HEAVY RAINS LASH STATE: Heavy rains, which lashed the State for most part of
the day, caused uprooting of trees all over the State but luckily no loss of
life has been reported though some property was damaged. (GT)

ONE KILLED: A 28-year-old person, Kalidas Gaonkar, died yesterday evening
after a heap of plywood sheets fell on him at Shri Ashapur Wood Industry, at

(H)

BUFFALOES ELECTROCUTED: A total of five buffaloes died on the spot on June

had come in contact with live electric wire. (GT)

who fell to the bullets of dreaded terrorist outfit Al-Qaeda on May 30, will
arrive in Goa today. The body will be laid to rest on June 12 at Cuncolim,
after the funeral service at Our Lady of Piety chapel at Panzorconi. (GT)

DRINKING WATER: Growth of population with inadequate water supply service,
seeping of sewage into the ground water table and dumping of untreated
sewage into water bodies, mostly the sea, uncontrolled use of chemical
fertilizer in agriculture largely increased the risk of water contamination,
said Ion Exchange India Limited Managing Director Rajesh Sharma. In his
opinion the next world war would well be fought for 'water'. (GT)

The sun punctuated the incessant monsoon
rains we have experienced here in Goa over the past
few days. though there have been brief spells of short
downpours.

This is the Goa I love. The entire countryside
clothed in Green with crisp blue skies and clear air.
To those who have never experienced Goa in the
monsoons, you are missing a great deal. Viva Goa !
