India, who came here having already lost the series, rode on fine goals by Sandeep Michael (17th minute) and Tushar Khandekar (21st) to chalk out the victory and salvage some pride in the first series between the arch-rivals in five years. This was also India's first win of the series on home soil as their earlier victory had come during the Pakistan leg, in the second Test in Quetta. Pakistan, who came to India with a 2-1 lead, won in Delhi and Amritsar while the Test in Chandigarh ended in a draw. India came to Hyderabad with happy memories of the venue where they had a cent percent record against Pakistan, having won the earlier two encounters convincingly. Both the matches were held during the Afro-Asian Games last year when India won the league contest before going on to beat the same side in the final for the title. Captain Dilip Tirkey returned after missing two Tests due to injury, to guide the team to victory at the Gochibowli Stadium. Though the series was already lost, there was lots of pride at stake to play for and the players did not disappoint as they played as a cohesive unit by using the both the flanks well to put pressure on the Pakistani defence before a Michael's goal gave the hosts a 1-0 lead. Khandekar initiated a fine move when he had a good run down the left before giving the ball to Vikram Pillay who returned the ball to the forward, whose goal-bound reverse hit was deflected in by Sandeep. Khandekar made it 2-0 in favour of India four minutes later with an equally brilliant goal that put the hosts in the driver's seat. Prabodh Tirkey had a good solo run on a counter attack following a penalty corner and at the half-line sent it across to Khandekar who rolled the ball inside the circle before taking the shot that beat the Pakistani goalkeeper all ends up. The Pakistani custodian could hardly react as the shot went through his leg, prompting Khandekar to pump his fist in the air before being joined in by his jubilant teammates in the celebration. Adrian D'Souza, who continued his fine show to win the man of the series award, shone by denying the new world record holder Sohail Abbas from scoring from three penalty corners in the first half. He charged out every time Abbas took his shot denying the ace drag-flicker enough space to put the set pieces into good use. In the process D'Souza also earned a green card from the neutral umpire Amarjit Singh for charging out too early on more than one occasion. Pakistan looked off colour in the match, which was played under lights and had no bite in their attack. Their misery was compounded by the failure of Abbas, the world's highest goal scorer, who failed to convert as many as five of the six penalty corners the visitors earned. Despite the loss, it was a memorable outing for Abbas who walked under an umbrella of hockey sticks formed by the Indian and Pakistani players just before the start of the match. The penalty corner expert was also given 'Best Achiever Award' consisting of a cash prize of USD 1,000 while D'Souza got USD 2,000 for winning the best player of the tournament award. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/m2/

We were a gang of four which comprised Joe, Freddy, my brother and I. One Saturday afternoon, we decided to pluck a few raw mangoes from an orchard. When we reached there, Joe and I climbed a mango tree and started plucking the fruit, which we would throw to the other two on the ground. Few minutes later, I heard dogs barking and I saw Freddy and my brother running. Joe and I were unable to escape as it was foiled by the dogs, who surrounded us until we surrendered to the mali. The dogs and the mali escorted us to a stone hut, which had a door and a window with wooden bars. Soon, the owner arrived at the hut and commenced to interrogate us. Joe did not cooperate, and in a fit of anger the owner struck Joe on the mouth. Blood started oozing from Joe's mouth as a result of a broken tooth. The owner realising the gravity of the situation locked us up in the hut and retreated to his residence along with the mali and the dogs. I assumed that he would now send for the police to deal with us. Inside the hut, I was scared, but Joe was a schemer. He spied a large stone in one corner of the hut, and while I kept a watch, he used the stone to break the wooden bars of the window. In a flash, we were out and running for our lives. It was great to be home again, and this was the first time I appreciated its warmth and safety. While Joe and I attended to our cuts and bruises, and the broken tooth, my brother and Freddy were busy slicing the few raw mangoes which they had managed to bring with them. They were preparing a Goan pickle delicacy called korom (raw mango slices in saline solution). There was no doubt that Joe was the hero of the day. We did not have wine or sherbet to raise a toast to him for displaying exemplary courage, leadership and presence of mind in a crisis, so we distributed korom to all present. Now, whenever I eat a mango, it reminds me of this incident. And I dread to think of what might have happened to Joe and me, if that large stone had not been there in the hut. This account will have universal parallels and revive childhood memories. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). [Goanet]Anjediva island
## # If Goanet stops reaching you, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # Want to check the archives? http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/# # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## Folks, Yesterday I spent an entire morning exploring Anjediva island. The island is no longer an island as it is now connected to the mainland by a 50 metre broad thoroughfare built by dumping thousands of tons of rocks into the ocean. The thoroughfare or breakwater is 1.8 km. long. It was built to enclose the Binaga bay from the weather and build a deep water port for units of the Navy. The island is uninhabited except for about 50 domestic cattle which have become wild over the years and shy away from humans. It is possible that a few cattle were left over by the Portuguese, which multiplied over the past 40 years. The church(or more likely the chapel) of Our Lady of Brotas is in reasonably good condition, but there is nothing inside the chapel except the small main alter, dominated by the statue of St. Sebastian. The chapel looks about 100 years old, but is stated to have been built 1729. Surprisingly, there is not a single inscription inside or outside the chapel. I was given to understand that the other chapel on the island, built in the 16th century , is in complete ruins. It was not possible to approach it due to the dense undergrowth. Close to the chapel of our lady of Brotas are the remnants of the old Portuguese barracks and small mess. There are also a few pillboxes and rusted canons. There is no power supply on the island, so the Govt. has installed a few lamps powered by solar energy. There are 2 wells and a small reservoir of water on the island. I climbed to the top of the hill and saw the neat memorial built to honour the 7 sailors who died when the island was taken over in 1961. From the top of the hill, one gets a birds eye view of the Seabird project. Phase 1 of the project is nearing completion and it has changed the geography of the region forever. The massive, state of the art naval base is a tremendous engineering achievement, built in an aesthetic manner. Regards, Gilbert Menezes.

Fernandes and Joseph Rebello - a tobacco farmer. Viv, you mentioned Souza Junior Dias which also sold gramophone records- the pre-cursors of musical tapes and CDs, and whose owner-Christie D'Souza was one of the few goans to be decorated by the Portuguese government with the Order of Henry the Navigator. His Mombasa business partner- Felix Dias, I believe was for sometime the Portuguese Vice-Consul at Kenya's main seaport. One of Christie's daughters is married to a former Governor of British Hong Hong and later Governor of the British Virgin Islands; and talking of Hong Kong, the last Chief Justice of the former British colony before it was ceded to People's China was a distinguished goan lawyer from Kenya - a Nazareth who was given Britain's highest award accorded to a lawyer- the Queen's Counsel (Q.C.). I do not know the names of the other goans who were decorated by the British with the insignia of the MBE; however, when the government made the announcement about my father's award, it also included a goan from Musoma (Nyerere's birthtown)- a D'Silva. The British had strict guidelines for receiving the award, and one of the pre-requisites was that the person had to be escorted by two sponsors who were previous recipients of the award. Mr. Dias-the father of Augusta Rodrigues of Los Angeles , and Mr. Almeida - the father of the well known sportsmen -Gangy, Fenny and Alves-were my father's escorts when he received the award from Tanganyika's last Governor- Richard Turnbull in the late fifties. There were several doctors all over the country including husband-wife teams, but you did mention Dr. Joao Franco Paes - the husband of Mrs Celia Paes - the only goan MP in Tanzania. Many goans may be aware of the fact that he practiced as a gynaecologist for some 17 years in Paris before moving to Tanzania. Quite an accomplishment in the forties and fifties considering the fact that you were colored. Tony Barros, Union, New Jersey. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! BEDFORD, New York (AP) -- Christopher Reeve, the star of the "Superman" movies whose near-fatal riding accident nine years ago turned him into a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research, died Sunday of heart failure, his publicist said. He was 52. Reeve fell into a coma Saturday after going into cardiac arrest while at his New York home, his publicist, Wesley Combs, told The Associated Press by phone from Washington, D.C., on Sunday night. Reeve was being treated at Northern Westchester Hospital for a pressure wound that he developed, a common complication for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in a serious systemic infection. "On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank Northern Westchester Hospital for the excellent care they provided to my husband," Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, said in a statement. "I also want to thank his personal staff of nurses and aides, as well as the millions of fans from around the world who have supported and loved my husband over the years." Reeve broke his neck in May 1995 when he was thrown from his horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia. Enduring months of therapy to allow him to breathe for longer and longer periods without a respirator, Reeve emerged to lobby Congress for better insurance protection against catastrophic injury and to move an Academy Award audience to tears with a call for more films about social issues. He returned to directing, and even returned to acting in a 1998 production of "Rear Window," a modern update of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller about a man in a wheelchair who becomes convinced a neighbor has been murdered. Reeve won a Screen Actors Guild award for best actor in a television movie or miniseries. "I was worried that only acting with my voice and my face, I might not be able to communicate effectively enough to tell the story," Reeve said. "But I was surprised to find that if I really concentrated, and just let the thoughts happen, that they would read on my face. With so many close-ups, I knew that my every thought would count." In his public appearances, he was as handsome as ever, his blue eyes bright and his voice clear. "Hollywood needs to do more," he said in the March 1996 Oscar awards appearance. "Let's continue to take risks. Let's tackle the issues. In many ways our film community can do it better than anyone else. There is no challenge, artistic or otherwise, that we can't meet." In 2000, Reeve was able to move his index finger, and a specialized workout regimen has made his legs and arms stronger. He has also regained sensation in other parts of his body.

(GT) 11/10/04: Togadia's doctrine is being practiced in Goa- NCP (Pg.3) Muslim Youth Body flays Togadia's statements. All said and done, and considering the above cacophony of utterances to denounce Praveen Togadia's spilt putrified bile, I shall want to say my piece, as the spokesperson of the Goa Su-Raj Party, not to be left out of the race towards downing of Togadia's remarks, or rather upholding them. For one, I have never felt comfortable with the RSS-VHP-BJP combine within Goa and without. And it was for this reason that the Goa Su-Raj Party was formed, soon after Francisco Sardinha embraced Manohar Parrikar and his BJP clique to ascend to the Kodel. Didn't Manohar Parrikar use and discard Francisco Sardinha? Did he not use and discard our political scientist Dr. Wilfred D'Souza when he thought that he couldn't refuse the offer, after reading a nice and proper letter from Manohar Parrikar, goading him to join the Planning Commission? Did not Manohar Parrikar use and discard Mickky Pacheco, the extrovert, who had fallen in love with him? Will he have not used and discarded the whimp from Velim, Philip Neri Rodrigues, when he will see that his entire constituency has vanished before his eyes in the new delimitation exercise? Will Manohar Parrikar not be using the poodle in Matanhy Saldanha, when he finds that his ears are smarting from excessive licking? And will the fate of the charlatan, Isidore be different? Who else could give Manohar Parrikar the victory in Poinguinim other than this brainless coot whom the people of Poinguinim have grown to like? And the lackey of Taleigao? What fate has been prepared for this one, we shall not be able to imagine. We shall see it shortly after the Poinguinim elections, whether the BJP gets the seat or not. And all these smart guys of Goa, who have been waiting to vent their spleen, have found Togadia a scapegoat. With all the above happening under their very eyes did they need this medical doctor turned VHP's gutter rat to spell it out for them? How naïve and how daft could they be. Likewise, we shall see the fate of the Valpoi Raja, who thinks he is Harvard smart of them all, in balancing himself with his feet firmly planted in two different boats, when the two boats do the trick on him in reversing their courses in the opposite direction, to tear him apart. And it is hoped that Anna Zantye, Subhash Shirodkar, Davlikar and others who are waiting for the results of Poinguinim to cross over to the BJP, the Isidore way, are not left with their tongues hanging out and dripping. And for the legal luminaries who have found the the warmth of their newly filled bank balances, it is hoped that those do not dry-up like the Mexican dessert along with the symphatetic voters of Salcette and a stage to sit on. Maybe Togadia's affaire in Goa will be the eye-opener for them, just as Togadia's VHP, Vajpayee's and Advani's RSS doctrines merged into the BJP had convinced Aires Rodrigues and Sotter D'Souza to give the BJP the wide berth. It is a fact that Manohar Parrikar, being a born and brought up Goan, is devoid of a single drop of Goan blood in his Goan veins. This is apparent from his 1992 involvement in Ayodhya, to be physically present there to help pull down the Babri Masjid. Whether to believe it or not is another thing, but sweet canaries have begun singing some unconfirmed reports in some sensitive ears to the effect that in his student days, Manohar Parrikar may have been involved in the burning of a Mosque in the then Bombay or thereabout. His over zealous blessings to VHP's Velingkar and associates to join the brigade to help tear down the Affzal Khan's Tomb in Maharashtra, his absolute inaction in the burning of the mosque in Porvorim, as well as his voluntary participation in the VHP Bandh in Goa, which he termed as successful, in spite of his occupying the post of Goa's Chief Minister, his inaction in the case of the incident at the Bishop's Palace, the vadalism at Fontainhas etc. are pointers to this fact. And we say that Goans have been r

Just a major correction before I reply to your email. I am assuming you are referring to Remy DeMello - the clarinetist from Toronto. Remy is still living; however, he has been hospitalised for over ten years at a Toronto hospispital after getting a stroke when he was on his way to prepare a young goan boy for his final music exams. Remy and his two older brothers - Santan - trumpeter , and the late Jules - piano and accordion , started the DeMello Brothers band in my home town - Iringa probably in the early fifties with their uncle-Mathew on drums and Tony Fernandes on double bass. They moved to Dar es Salaam in the mid-fifties- minus Mathew and Tony- and co-opted other musicians in their band including Joaquim Mendes - (ex Iringa) on drums. Remy - who was equally comfortable on the saxophone, trombone and trumpet - later did a number of "stints" on the popular BI ships - SS Uganda and SS Kenya before moving to Kuwait. He migrated to Toronto in the nineties where he continued playing for various goan bands and teaching music to goan youngsters. Santan, who is over 70 years young, continues to play in Toronto and their youngest brother - Francis - a great pianist and drummer - plays solo professionally at a Toronto nite club. Earlier, he had his own band in Teheran, Iran before the overthrow of the Shah. Jules passed away recently in London. The Tony Ferns jazz quartet consisting of the three brothers - (Tony on saxophone, Nerrie on piano and Hilary on drums ) and Polly Fernandes on double bass moved to London in 1962 to play professionally at nite spots in the English capital. Tony, I believe passed away in the mid seventies and Nerrie formed his own band which included his wife - a Sri Lankan crooner. I was not aware that he was in Colombo but can now see the connection. Hilary moved to Toronto and for a short period joined with Francis DeMello and another bassist to play jazz at some Toronto nite spots. (As a teenager , I was fortunate to have acted in a concert in late 1961 in Dar es Salaam which featured the Tony Ferns band). Judy Luis Watson - born in Dar es Salaam - has her own group playing Blues and R &B with her husband and partner- Paul Watson. They have won several awards and are based in Maryland State near Washington. They have a great website and it can be accessed under the Goan Overseas Digest thru the Goacom.com website. Although I have never met her , last year I had some great email communication with her on African music, Swahili songs and jazz music- particularly its enrichment thru influences from other cultures ; i.e. Asian Indian classical music , traditional african music and Latino (Hispanic) music. Judy comes from a family of great musicians. Her father - Jerry Luis played the accordion for the Jazz Swingers in Dar - the main goan band in the mid-fifties; while her late brother - Ian and sister - Jacinta are accomplished musicians on their own right. The caste system is part of our culture unfortunately, and although the prejudices have decreased tremendously thru education and varied exposures, it is still very conspicuous - albeit in subtle forms. You can be rest assured that many goan parents who belong to a so-called "higher caste" continue to state their misgivings if one of their children wants to marry a person of a so-called "lower caste". The normal excuse is that the person is not from a good family. In the First World - the situation is getting a little different- for a number of reasons; including parents not bringing any objections knowing that the kid will marry what-ever the reasons. I gave the Nairobi example because it was very glaring; I am sure many so-called "low caste" folks have wealth of examples. And you can be rest assured it is very much "alive" in Goa. One's family's true colors are clearly depicted when the subject of marriage is surfaced, or a relationship- that has simmered between two people of different social strata- has come to light. rgds. To be sure, this is one of the most difficult and crucial periods in our history. What we are going through is worse than colonialism, Nazism, all put together. The only silver lining is that more and more people are awakening to the grim reality of what is happening in Goa and are clearly expressing their voices of condemnation despite fear of reprisals. And, God willing, a new era will dawn. Permit me to disagree with you, however, when you refer unfavourably to those who gave press releases by saying "those smart people were waiting for Togadia as a scapegoat, to vent their feelings". May I draw your attention to the fact that many whom you call "smart people" (though they may not have had such a brilliant record as you do), have for long been active opponents of Parrikar's regime and misdeeds, by raising their voices time and again in every possible way even with a good deal of personal sacrifice? He came to Kenya as a stripling lad to stitch for the British Army. He went on to become one of the finest Tairlors in Nairobi and ended up clothing the New elite in Kenya after independence. He died many years ago. He was by Borther-in-law's father. He was also the first President of the Tailors' Society in Nairobi - had the Portuguese Consul present at the opening of their premises. The Society was presented with a minature Caravale, which I believe, is to this day hanging in the Tailors' Society Club in Nairobi. I was fortunate to have him make my bespoked wedding suit. Probably the last item he ever stitched for a client. As was usual in those days he had quite a few offspring! Aleluia Fernandes is to this day remembered by many of the off spring of the Tailors. R.I.P. Not all tailors were poor. There were one or two who were quite wealthy in their own right. One Robin Fernandes from Navelim gifted his property in Navelim to the Church, which at that time was worth I believe 16-1/2 lakhs! ( many years ago!) He could be considered as an entrepreneur having his own biz in Nbi. Cheers, Gabe.

But what is the status of low air fares into and out of Goa for domestic fliers. There is absolutely no word in this connection about the plethora of cut price fares that have been announced during the last few months for other parts of the country. Has Goa been blocked out of the low fare route maps of the domestic scheduled airlines? If so, why? No doubt air fares even elsewhere are slated to go up due to the recent jump in international oil prices. But only the other day there was an ad which has been appearing fairly regularly in the papers. The intriguing thing about this ad is that it talks about flying cheap TO Goa but never mention froms WHERE (whether Mumbai or Bangalore or whatever)! I suppose if one called up the numbers etc given one could get an answer. But its really a strange ad, that's for sure. Anybody have any dope on low air fares into and out of Goa for domestic travellers?

PROVING THEMSELVES UNDER ADVERSITY It's easy to locate Dr Teresa Albuquerque. You simply need to keep track of the villages and localities that she has written about, and you can guess she'll be somewhere there. But of course, this prolific writer's pen has taken on many more areas than one person can live in. She earlier wrote on Anjuna (her scenic but fast-changing village in Bardez) and Santa Cruz (where her family home in Bombay), apart from other subjects. Her focus has now shifted to Kenya, which happens to be the land of birth of her husband, as of quite a few other emigrant Goans. Albuquerque's latest book, released just days back, deals with the Goans of Kenya. Awaiting a suitable publisher for some time now, this work is based on her research to that region in 1994-95. When we met the other day at her family home at Chinvar, Anjuna, she had many stories to narrate. Albuquerque said her story was one of how Goans "work best under adversity" and how they managed to "come out winners again" in the trying post- colonial times of that East African country. She pieced together this story in a country she had not visited earlier by meeting many Goans there. In particular the three widows of prominent persons who dared to stand apart from their community and play a crucial role in Kenyan political affairs. Published by Michael Lobo of Bombay, this book is not in the same coffee-table series as Albuquerque's earlier 'Rachol', focussing on that historic Salcete village. So, it is priced far more affordably, and could find its way to many more Goan homes. Says Albuquerque: "I had interest in Goan migration, and earlier worked on the (Catholic) Goans of Bombay in my book called 'To Love is To Serve'. During my PhD research, I came across many references of Goans. It struck me that though such a small community in Bombay, they too had done quite something in fields like education." Reading the files of decades-old periodicals like the 'Anglo- Lusitano' was a fascinating experience. This bilingual periodical threw much light on the early Goans migrating to that city at the turn of the century. Albuquerque came across references to her own grandfather, the late B.X.Furtado. He was one of the founders of the prominent St. Xavier's High School at Cavel and ran a shop of music and religious articles. "That really whetted my appetite," she recalls. She realised how Goans had struggled to come up. She also got particularly interested in East Africa, one of the places of Goan migration. Her father-in-law had worked under the British administration there, and her husband was born in a place called Lamu, near Malindi in Kenya. "He had never seen it after returning as a child. Africa was a sort of fascination," she recalls. She then happened to mention this to Placido D'Souza, the Pune- based former High Commission for India in Kenya and in many other places. He offered to help, and put Albuquerque in touch with an influential Goan there Dr Fitz D'Souza. Barrister D'Souza had supported the defence of Jomo Kenyatta in his trial. In free Kenya, he rose to become Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and was also a businessman. He currently spends time between homes in Goa (Bambolim), London and Nairobi. D'Souza introduced Albuquerque to a wide range of Goans in Kenya. By the time of her study, this figure had of course dwindled considerably, to just a few hundred families in Nairobi. "By then, Goans had been established. Earlier generations of pioneers had come and risked their lives, and braved hazards of the deep and of the jungle, unknown terrain and unfamiliar people. That stage had passed. The second-generation were white collar workers. They had got into the administration and had done very well for themselves. They were quite happy," she recalls. But when Uhuru (independence) came, Goans found themselves in a very peculiar situation. Many were Portuguese subjects. "Finally, they found they were neither fish nor fowl. The vast majority was not really really interested in politics, many still remaining apolitical today too. But, retracing their footsteps, Albuquerque found that a few had really done outstanding things. People like Pio Gama Pinto w

Hopefully, one day you will consider putting together an entire album with a little less electronic back up. Unfortunately, Emilano has gone a wee bit out of sync. Now to the points you make above. 1. I am not surprised by what Floriano has written. 2. It's the old Camel and Tent story - Willie, Faleiro,Rane, Churchill and Sardinha (not to mention Neri, Monseratte, Isidore et al) . gave Parrikar support. Some for tactical, some for financial and some for Damoclesian reasons. They forgot that lessons from Disposable Syringes. Use and Discard. They also forgot the Snake who bit the Sadhu story. The sadhu asked the snake: " Why did you bite me - after all it was I who gave you shelter". To this the Snake replied: "Arre pishea. Tuum Sadhu zalo puun raulo Pisso. A snake is always a snake. It will bite when the time is right" 3. However I disagree that a significant number of Goans are awoken to the chicannery in progress. Time and again, I am advised How GLORIOUS and VIBRANT the democratic process in Goa continues to be. 4. Fortunately for Goa, life is a cycle. Salazars will come and Salazars will go. We Goans will always remain the Honrado people we are - through our Music, Food, Culture and love for the finer things in life. [Goanet]GOANET-READER: PDAs... planning for destruction?
## # If Goanet stops reaching you, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # Want to check the archives? http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/# # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## PDAs, Goa's Planning for Destruction Authorities Goa's Planning & Development Authority (PDA), The Town & Country Planning (TCP) Department, and allied governmental agencies are systematically destroying the ecology, topography, and natural resources of India's smallest state. This is becoming possible thanks to a lethal combination of greedy politicians, and bureaucrats with a metropolitan mentality and a willingness to share the booty! These agencies have been functioning in total disregard to the laws and practices of Goa's traditional local governance institutions like the Comunidades. In this soul searching, matter-of-fact article, the writer traces the start of the plunder and the factors that influenced the formation of these destructive bodies. This article first appeared in the GOA MESSENGER -- http://www.goamessenger.com. GoanetReader's appeal is: Support smaller publications to promote diversity int he media. By Soter D'Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED] GOA MESSENGER Goa's forefathers had carefully planned Goa's development through unwritten, but collectively-respected, laws. Laws like those that came to be codified by our Portuguese conquerors in the form of the Code of Comunidades of Goa. But our modern day rulers have thrown all this native wisdom and knowledge to the windsm while going in pursuit of a quick buck. November 4, 1975 will be a fateful day in the history of Goa. This date marked the beginning of the destruction of 'Golden Goa', as some call it. The then Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party government, with Pratapsing Raoji Rane as law minister, craftily piloted what is known as the Goa, Daman and Diu Town and Country Planning Act, 1974(TCP). Ever since this law came into force, the politicians and the builder lobby in Goa grew richer while the Goan citizen became poorer. 'Poorer' here does not mean merely in an economic sense, but moral, cultural, social and ecological loss as well. What on the face of it is a law for planning, has ultimately resulted in the destruction of this beautiful State. The raison d'etre, as mentioned in the Act, sounds good: "To provide for planning the development and use of rural and urban land in the Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu, and for purposes connected therewith". In reality, the law has only been used to plunder Goan villages and alienate the average Goan, under the guise of providing housing and infrastructure development in this State. The constituting of the Planning and Development Authority (PDA) under section 20 of the Act is nothing but a follow-up on the attitude of the British and Portuguese colonialists who used to squeeze the commonman for the good of the Empire. These PDAs have been long filled with politicians and their cronies, whose reason for being on these Boards is well known to the Goan public. These PDAs which were at first only limited to the urban areas of Margao, Vasco, Panaji and Mapusa were gradually extended to the surrounding rural villages of Penha de Franca, Pilerne, Socorro, Saligao and Calangute. It was Dr. Wilfred D'Souza, during his tenure as Chief Minister, who later scrapped the jurisdiction of the PDAs from these villages. A move deeply appreciated by every villager from these areas. It is the present BJP government, under Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, which has reintroduced this destructive authority in village panchayat areas of Bardez. Not satisfied with the plunder, the government's latest target is now the village panchayat areas of Salcette taluka. There is no doubt that a planning body is required for the long-term orderly and healthy planning of development in this State. But the Town and Country Planning Department and the PDAs have been doing everything else, other than planning. This is evident from the increased congestion in newly developed townships like Porvorim in Bardez and Gogol and surrounding areas, outside Margao, in Salcette. These townships, which are hardly ten years old, are congested and have become breeding grounds for epidemics and criminals. Massive housing projects have been permitted by these agencies, resulting in the total breakdown of basic infrastructural facilities like water and electricity supply, parking lots, and recreational spaces. The absence of reserved garbage disposal sites has now resulted in garbage being dumped all over the place, and 'garbage wars' erupting between villages. These once tranquil localities, acclaimed for their traditional housing designs, have been

Before you brand us anti-establishment (we know the government is very fond of bunching together all voices of dissent that don't toe the line simply because the voices have a different viewpoint), we believe this time your khaki clad `law-breakers' have clearly overstepped the boundaries of our patience and tolerance. Not because we have a short fuse that threatens to explode every time a new rape is reported on a child (not to forget the umpteen that go unreported and the State Government is still dilly-dallying with the Children's Court. Not to mention that the Children's Act is riddled with gaping loopholes), but because we are a population that is finally beginning to get verbal. In protest. In print. And in disgust. God forbid, if it turns into action. The days of turning the other cheek are over. And rightly so. Patience wears thin when it is taken for granted. And we have been taken for granted for far too long now. Your gag-the-press threats prove that your khaki boys are a bunch of nincompoops fattened on the taxpayers monies. So, no amount of gagging, in print, through intimidation, through blackmail is going to stop what needs to be spoken aloud. The verdict of the people is out, loud and clear. The law-keepers have turned law-breakers using sheer clout and intimidation - some abuse of office too -- because when the printed word creates an `Ouch,' instead of taking stock and pulling up their socks, cops visit our offices to `verify our character and antecedents.' while rape, molestation, child abuse and paedophilia enjoys legal license. Why are we so afraid of the truth? Is it because it stares naked in our faces? The State's rise in "crimes of passion," against women and children is turning into a nauseating cocktail, that its time we begin to throw up. And how happily you go cutting ribbons at women's seminars while skirting the larger issue of women safety in the State that presumably enjoys gender equality. And now your boys are caught taking bribes in uniform! Really Mr Kanth!!! And what about the way your corridors of justice is known to patronage politicians and their chamchas, withholding the law of the land to prevail in order to avoid dirty linen from being washed in public. The rule books apply to all. So, why the short stick to some? We are not surprised with the tactics the police adopt to quash the truth. Or, intimidate the truth seekers. Especially, if the bone of contention is a journo. If this is meted out to a professional, imagine the plight of the common man who musters courage to go to a police station to report the rape or abuse of his ward and then instead gets shown the stick. What is the role of the police in Goa? What are their duties and where lie their loyalties? Who are they getting paid to protect? Do they truly care about protecting the innocent or are they inclined towards letting criminals walk free. From the barrage of brickbats going their way from the citizen, the cops in Goa are clearly warming their chairs (and lining their pockets) while someone's little daughter, sister, young wife, mother, aunt loses her dignity to live through forced brutality. Not to forget drug pushers, drug lords, pimps and other assorted variety walking free and safe. Some even enjoying political clout and cover. Compassion is a yardstick to determine a sane society, same with compassionate human beings. Yes, I have met very few compassionate policemen doing honors to the chair they occupy, some even going beyond their call of duty, but the less said the better of the others. I'm convinced it is safer to be a criminal than a law-abiding citizen, because the police themselves have no respect for the law. How can we expect them to respect the common man, his woes, his fears and insecurities? Less said about providing solace in the hour of need. Given this attitude, how can we expect them to stop horrendous crimes staking claim of little children and adults (and the graph keeps scaling and doesn't look funny anymore). The cops in Goa are busy being hot-shot cops and first class klutzs (if you see them manning the roads at nakabandi, you get the picture. You can flash a licence card with somebody else's photo pasted on it, while you're behind the wheel, and escape notice). Forgetting that they are men who go

## # If Goanet stops reaching you, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # Want to check the archives? http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/# # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## ooo 0 Revised edition of Inside Goa ready to roll o Novelist Manohar Malgonkar has written a revised edition of his highly successful Inside Goa, which was first published in 1982. The book is also extremely popular because of a large number of truly excellent illustrations by celebrated cartoonist Mario de Miranda. The revised edition due for release on October 30, 2004, is published by architect Gerard da Cunha. The publisher has offered a pre-publication rate at a massive discount. Inside Goa is a delightful narrative of the story of Goa; of the upheavals and events that have moulded this place and people to make both, things of beauty and resilience. It traces the history of Hindu and Christian Goa and gives reasons for the unique harmony in this small area of the Konkan which till date has never witnessed communal unrest. It takes every Goan back to their roots. As such this book has a lot to offer all Indians, and is a must-read for the Goan Diaspora across the world, and especially for their children who do not have a clue about their fascinating heritage. Inside Goa explains why you can take the Goan out of Goa but it is impossible to take Goa out of the Goan. Book collectors can call 2410715 to avail of the pre-publication price before October 25, 2004. 00

## # If Goanet stops reaching you, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # Want to check the archives? http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/# # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## Despite there being clear and precise rules concerning noise pollution, a parent of a young child narrated to me the traumatic, sorrowful and shattering experience faced by his son during his examinations because of the unauthorized use of amplified music by the organizers of a 'Rave party'. Incidentally, the Supreme Court some years back had observed: "In our view, in a civilized society, activities which disturb old or infirm persons, students, or children having their sleep in the early hours or during day-time or other persons carrying on other activities cannot be permitted. It should not be forgotten that young babies in the neighbourhood are also entitled to enjoy their natural right of sleeping in a peaceful atmosphere. A student preparing for his examination is entitled to concentrate on his studies without their being any unnecessary disturbance by the neighbours. Similarly, old and infirm are entitled to enjoy reasonable quietness during their leisure hours without there being any nuisance of noise pollution. Aged, sick, people afflicted with psychic disturbances as well as children up to 6 years of age are considered to be very sensible to noise. Their rights are also required to be honoured." The rules under the 'Environment (Protection) Act, 1986' clearly state that loudspeakers or public address systems or any forms of loud music shall not be used except after obtaining written permission from the authority (and even then not exceeding the volumes prescribed under the limits) and shall not be used at night (between 10.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. except in closed premises for communication within, e.g. auditoria, conference rooms, community halls and banquet halls). A study that appeared in 'Science Today' pointed out how noise pollution could lead to serious nervous disorders, emotional tension leading to high blood-pressure, cardiovascular diseases, increase in cholesterol level resulting in heart attack and strokes and even damage to foetus. People, old or babies or even the ill, are unfortunately being made captive audience to sounds that can have adverse effects on their physical and mental conditions simply because the concerned authorities allow their palms to be greased by greens. It is time the Government tackles this issue more seriously. Sandeep Heble Panaji-Goa

And, of course, there are different interpretations of history (often understaken to suit diverse interests) and each one thinking their their (version) is more truthful than the other. Check out http://www.zenit.org/english/visualizza.phtml?sid=60179 It's another version on "What the Crusades Were Really Like (Part 1)". Quote: "The Crusaders were not unprovoked aggressors, greedy marauders or medieval colonialists, as portrayed in some history books. In fact, Thomas Madden, chair of St. Louis University's history department and author of "A Concise History of the Crusades," contests that the Crusaders were a defensive force that did not profit from their ventures by earthly riches or land." You've got to be skeptical about what you read, but that's probably best left to each one's judgement. Let's see how the historians would respond to Madden's work, but then there have been so many defensive attempts to simply push the inconvenient facts under the carpet. Talking about being defensive, one can be pretty certain that quite a few rioters in Gujarat-2002 and the Germans under Hitler felt they were just defending themselves from large enemies, real or imagined. Quote: Today, traders from Asia and Europe haggle over handbags and cell phones, airplanes and nuclear-reactor construction deals. Four hundred years ago, the objects of desire were a little different, but the relationship between East and West was already underpinned by an intoxicating sense of commercial potential. An enormous gold-leaf, six-panel screen currently on display at London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) shows a Portuguese trading ship arriving amid great anticipation at a lively 17th century Japanese port. The rest of the story unfolds on the screen: the captain marches ashore under a ceremonial parasol, Portuguese dignitaries pay court to the feudal lord, and Western businessmen offer their wares to intrigued customers, tantalizing them with everything from books to tiger skins. Even then centuries before Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schröder landed in Asia with their retinues of corporate executives East and West shared common ground, each equally fascinated by the other. Endquote There's a reference to Goa too, as can be expected given that this small region was a meeting ground of cultures (even if sometimes, violently) and trade: "The converts responded with hybrid adaptations, marrying Christian symbolism with Asian traditions. Some results, as displayed at the V&A: a standing baby Jesus in ivory from Goa; a jade crucifix inlaid with teardrop- shape rubies from India..." Has any Goanetter seen this exhibition? It's currently on at London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). ## # If Goanet stops reaching you, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # Want to check the archives? http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/# # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## I read with great interest the two-part report by Tony Barros on the Goan Diaspora of Tanzania. Others and I found the write-up and analysis both intellectual and refreshing. I thank and compliment Tony for taking the initiative to write the posts on GoaNet. The reports clearly reflect the great talent Goans have. Obviously on-the-whole the Tanzanian Goan-Diaspora community was very successful given the many struggles they faced between the transition of two World Wars and the country's independence. The test now to Goan-Diasporas across the world is how we build on that and other experiences. I would encourage Tony and others to try and write a similar report on their (own) current Diaspora community. Hopefully this may lead to a SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis. This is not a finger-pointing exercise but more of a comparative analysis of what was, what is, and what can be - given the fifty years of Diaspora experience the current generation of Goans have. Can one or more (team) Goans from different Diaspora communities take up the research to analyze and write their respective Goan-Diaspora story? Thank you in anticipation for considering this request and for the service to YOUR Goan-Diaspora community. Regards, Gilbert A. Lawrence,

I think you are refering to the band "The Demello Brothers." Remy moved to the Middle East and played there for some time. He then came to Toronto and had his band here too. Unfortunately, he suffered a heart attack some years ago and is bedridden. The youngest brother, Francis has a one man band here in Toronto. The most famous Goan musician from Tanzania must be George D'souza. He used to have his own 30 minute show on Radio Tanzania on Saturday nights. George looked like and used to sing in the Tom Jones style. He move to Toronto and performed at the Royal York, Toronto's top hotel, for 20 years.
