[Goanet] Terrorism
The bombings in Bali are a reminder to us that Goa is not immune to terrorism. We need to remain vigilant. I am sure that the large number of Israelis who vacation in Goa makes a tempting target for terrorists. On the other hand, the Israelis are old hands at terrorism and know how to protect their own. Let us hope that Goa does not become a victim of the carnage that has affected the beautiful and once peaceful island of Bali.

[Goanet] (no subject)
Thanks to Isabel de Santa Rita Vaz and Cecil Pinto, and at a different level to Dom Martin, the story of one of the greatest Goans, Abbe Faria, is now being remembered and written about. However, while almost all stories carried in the local media refer to Caetano Vitorino Faria's famous line, none state (for the benefit of the uninitiated reader) how the young Abbe Faria came to be got tongue-tied on going up the steps of the pulpit of Queen Maria-I's chapel at the Queluz palace. The young priest had, after all, delivered a homily to an audience as distinguished as Pope Pius VI and the princes of the Church, at the Vatican's Sistine Chapel. The young Abbe had prepared himself well (and probably rehearsed his delivery several times over) for the sermon at the Queluz chapel. But when we went up the pulpit, he was suddenly overwhelmed at the sight of the royal entourage ... and failed to find the words he had so well prepared. The father, who was standing by the pulpit below, quickly sized the situation and, in an audible but incomprehensible tongue to the distinguished audience, uttered those famous words, *Hi sogli bhaaji, Kator re bhaaji!* And out flew the words of yet another memorable sermon like the waters of the Mandovi during monsoons...

The CBI has caught some big fish in their net to root out corruption. I hope that this is not just a token effort, and that they will spread their nets wide and deep, down to the Panchayat and Communidade level. They may find more officials and former officials with assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. Happy fishing !!!

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Musings on crossing a hundred....
MUSINGS ON CROSSING A HUNDRED: FROM ENTEBBE'S GRAND OLD MAN Gorgonio Lobo, the oldest surviving member of the Entebbe Goan Institute, recently completed a 100. He resides in Goa, and is well known to many there and in Australia, UK, USA, Canada and Africa. For his September 9, 2005 birthday, he had the company of his children and grandchildren from Geneva, Switzerland, Perth and Montreal and Toronto. Now, doesn't that say something about Goan migration? By GORGONIO LOBO As told to Sybil de Quadros My parents, Angelo and Libania worked in Entebbe, Uganda, where I was born in 1905. I was the eldest of their four sons. Although my parents and three brothers have gone to their eternal reward, they have left me with many happy memories and blessings. In 1915, my parents returned to Goa. I joined St Joseph's High School in Arpora in 1915 and achieved my Matriculation in 1923. My first job in 1929 was as a clerk, with the Ministry of Health. I was appointed to Hospitals in Jinja, Soroti, Masindi, Entebbe, Masaka and Kampala, rising to the rank of Medical Superintendent. In 1963, I retired after 34 years service with the Government. After which, I joined the Kampala City Council as a Graduated Tax Officer, remaining there until 1971. In the meantime, in 1936, I married Priscilla De Souza from Calangute. We got married in the year 1936 at Mormugao, the port city of Goa. We had 5 children. As parents, we fostered in our children a love for our faith, the importance of education, enjoyment of music and a sense of community. The upheaval following the seizure of power by Idi Amin caused the dispersal of my family -- Arthur and Judy to Perth Australia, Sybil and Alfred to Canada. Bertha had married and joined her husband in Switzerland. The opportunity to go to England or Australia were forgone as the pull of my ancestrial home -- and water from my own well -- was strongest. My wife and I returned to Goa. Later we spent two-and-half years in Perth, Western Australia, in the mid-seventies with our family and many ex-Ugandan friends. After my return to Goa, I was able to contribute to the community teaching the violin and the organ and supporting the Parish of St Anne. In Uganda, I was also involved as president and founding member of the Parent Teacher Association in Entebbe; member of the Advisory Board of Asian Education, Kampala; member of the Central Goan Council and President of the Goan Institute, Entebbe; member of the Asian Widows and Orphans Pension Fund, Kampala; and member of the Uganda Defence Force for two years in 1941. Many have asked the secret of my longevity. It is ultimately the blessing of God. However the constant use of mind and body -- by way of teaching music, keeping up to date with current affairs, managing my own finances -- kept me going. Maintaining a large home demanded a daily routine of activity. Until 2003, I rode my scooter and drove my car to Mapusa and the church. In doing so, one maintained an independent lifestyle. The regular visits from friends and their children has renewed the bonds of great friendship we created and fostered in Uganda. Sadly, my wife of 67 years passed away on November 22, 2003. I have been looking forward to be a centenarian, and request friends to participate spiritually in my thanks-giving prayers to the almighty for granting me a long lease of life. May God Bless you all. -- ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Lobo receives his pension cheques from London, and he counts as his hobbies the playing of musical instruments -- piano, double bass, violin. Until recently, he was part of the church choir. Planting seedlings of fruit that will be harvested by others -- cashew, mango, jackfruit, chickoo, and papaya -- are among his other interests. He continues to write letters, read newspapers and news-magazines such as India Today, Outlook, The Week and Readers' Digest. RE: [Goanet] Death announcement: DOMINIC ANTHONY REGO from Arpora/Parra, Goa
It is with deep regret and sorrow I got this news of the sad demise of our teacher Domnic Rego from Arpora Bardez Goa. His house is next to St. Joseph High School. Around 1963-64 he joined Arpora School as incharge of School Administration under the late Fr. Mendonca who trained him thoroughly well in school administration and organising sports meets and games though Mr. Rego was well equipped in this knowledge. His wife was also a teacher in the same school. When he at Arpora our School was winning laulers in sports field partly because of Mr. Rego's hard work and dedication to this field. He was very close to me because of my sports prowess and it was during his time that I won firts time All Goa Inter School Individual Championship by creating a record for Goa in one hundred metres. He always encouraged me and other athletes and sportsmen to study hard and even telling some of the teachers especially of Maths, Hindi, Physics and Chemistry to take extra interest in us because he wanted sportsmen like me to be good in studies also. He understood many of our woes and problems. My glorious period at Arpora school was during his time. Later on when I reached in SSC, he left and joined Parra School but even then always encouraging me. A nice man at heart, always helpful and cooperative. His brother in law Peter was one of the fastest runners of Goa then and he too was my colleague. Along with Peter, Selu, Andre Joao we 4 of us created wonders in Goa in relays and Domnick Rego was the person responsible for forming that wonderfil quartet in 100 X 4 and 400 x 4 metres. May the soul of Domnic Rego rest in peace and may God give lot od Regos for Goa for the prmotion of sports. In his death Goa lost a great sports organiser. A. Veronica Fernandes, Kuwait. [Goanet] Christians and child trafficking charge
Christian Council Chides VHP Over Charges of Child Trafficking Against Missionaries By SAR NEWS BANGALORE, Karnataka (SAR NEWS) -- Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC), a justice and rights organisation, has repudiated the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) charge of child trafficking by Christian missionaries and called for a summary enquiry by a sitting judge of the high court on the functioning of children’s homes and orphanages run by all communities. GCIC, in a press release, demanded unconditional apology from VHP (World Hindu Council) all-India secretary, Mohahan Joshy, for the wild allegation of child trafficking by missionaries. “The myopic and ignorant view about Indian Christians contributions to the education, health and social empowerment sectors would have led VHP demand for inquiry into the functioning of children’s homes and orphanages run by Christian missionaries,” the release said. “Joshi’s allegation that Christian missionaries were misusing orphan children and indulging in child trafficking, in the name of running orphanages and children's homes, is adding insult to injury to thousands of emotionally, physically and economically challenged children who are the remnants of the caste-ridden society, fuelled and promoted by the likes of Mohan Joshi, GCIC national convener Sajan K. George said, September 27. Joshi should also examine the track record of VHP in other parts of the world before he throws stones at others, he said. The Christian council urged “the learned all-India World Hindu Council secretary to examine the latest census data which to his pleasure clearly shows a drop of Christian population in India.” “We appeal to Mr. Joshi and his cahoots to leave Christians in peace. We have lived and built the nation along with others for the last 2,000 years and VHP cannot ignore the contributions of the Christian community. GCIC would also like to warn the civil society against the diabolic design of the VHP of spreading lies with an ulterior motive to create hate and division to derail the progress of states like Karnataka,” said the GCIC convener.

[Goanet] Romi Konknni for Church schools?
*** Your mail has been scanned by InterScan. ***-*** Hello Borges, Its good to know that at last the Catholic church is waking up. They have been dormant for too long thanks to our former Arch Bishop who accepted devanagri Konkani but never bothered to change the religious texts in devanagri. I wonder how a well educated person, the head of the Catholic Church of Goa and all the Roman script readers could be taken for a ride by the few devanagris. Hope our new Arch Bishop Neri, does something in that context. But the big question here is will the Government accept it. After all the teachers are paid by the Government. Thanks for bringing forth this article. As for your explaination, of the Holy Bible in konkani spoken in different dialects in Goa, I would say, its difficult to write in Salcette accent, and as of today, no one has ever written any serious book in that dialect, unless the comedy in konkani dramas. I would rather say, that countless books have been written in Bardez accent, especially by somplolo Reginaldo Fernandes, and our famous Bonny D'Pietro, any many other writers, which I bet many Goans have read them all over Goa irrespective of their dialects. So who better to ask about the script than our famous writers of Goa what they feel about it. Its always good to read your writeups. cheers and keep up the good work Cheers Jerry Fernandes Borges wrote Dear friends, The script controversy of Konkani is now about to take a religious colour. V. IXTT, a Konkani weekly published by a religious order and edited by a priest, has given an editorial call to the ecclesiastical authorities to begin teaching Konkani in their schools in the Roman script. Readers have also written to the editor supporting this recommendation. A signature campaign is also in full swing with copies of the letter being available with the parish priests. The reasons are as follows: There is vast difference between the language *spoken* by the child at home and in the neighbourhood and the Antruzi dialect that is found *printed* in her text books. Thus the child is more confused than enlightened. Therefore, the universally accepted principle that the child is best instructed in her mother tongue at the primary level is not valid in the existing situation. Any Goan Catholic, especially one living in the Old Conquests belt, will wholeheartedly agree with the above contention because the dialect printed in the books is not spoken in one's locality. Therefore, one need not be surprised if the signature campaign gains tremendous response. Consequently the Church may be forced to accept the suggestion of the priest editor. Let us assume that this does happen. Then what? The first question that will arise is: Which orthographic rules to adopt? There are two choices: (a) Roman script with DKA (1988) rules written by Fr. Matthew Almeida et al. or (b) Graeco-Roman script with TSKK (2005) rules written by Fr. Pratap Naik. The next question is: Which dialect should be adopted for printing the text books? The Karnataka Government too is presently grappling with this problem. Any Catholic will scoff at this question and counter it with: What is wrong with the dialect used in the Povitr Pustok - Novo Korar? Sounds reasonable! But, pray, which Goan Catholic child *speaks* this dialect? I find that the Biblical dialect is not spoken, *in exact terms*, anywhere in Goa. In support of this contention I present here a few passages from the printed Bible and some representative colloquial samples of those very same passages in two talukas of Goa. A rendition in the Antruzi dialect is also added for comparison. They are marked (a) = Biblical print version, (b) = colloquial version of Velim, Salcete, (c) = colloquial version of Mapusa, Bardez, (d) = Antruzi print rendition. [Please note that Antruz = Ponda taluka.] 1. Mt. 7, 3 (a) Tujea bhavachea dolleant asa tem kuskutt tum kiteak polletai, ani tujea dolleant asa ti patti tuka dixtti poddonam? (b) Tuj bhavadolleam astem kiskutt tum kitea chôita, ani tujdolleam asti patt tuk dixponnam? (c) Tujea bhavachea doeant aham tem kus tum kiteak poitai, ani tujea doeantli patti tukam disonam? [Goanet] By Building Houses For Poor...
By Building Houses For Poor, Bro. Keane Has Made Hearts Of Poor His Home By Amarnath Dinesh Roy, SAR NEWS BANGALORE, Karnataka (SAR NEWS) -- Irish-born Brother Tony Keane has spent 54 years of his life in India. And in those five decades, he has become a sort of demigod to several poor villagers in Tamil Nadu’s Sivagangai Diocese. By building houses for the homeless, Keane has cemented a place in the hearts of the poor. When SAR News approached him for an interview, he threw up his hands and said, “Why do I need to be interviewed or appreciated for something that God demands of me as His disciple? I am doing my Christian duty…let's not make anything big of this. The credit goes to those wonderful people out there who contribute money for this good cause.” It was only after several appeals did Brother Keane accepted to talk with SAR News. With joy beaming in his eyes, he displayed a few photos saying, “Look at the joy on the faces of these poor people who now have a roof above their head.” Keane, now 73, has over the years approached Christian Brothers and other benevolent people, including his own sister in Ireland, to support the homeless in Tamil Nadu state. “Back home in Ireland, even a poor man has a 6-room house, but a poor man in India is roofless; it is even more pathetic to see seven to ten people living in a small 15/15 feet shack,” he adds, pointing to a tiny little hut that he photographed. Though the beautiful houses Keane has been building with the help of donors are spacious, strong, well ventilated, good-looking and with attached toilets, Keane says that these houses may be considered as chicken houses in Europe. “But for the people here, it’s like a palace…I am happy that with the help of the loving people out there in Ireland, we are able to do so much for these poor people of God here…” Brother Keane personally visits the afflicted, ensures if the land they intend to build a house is their own and reaches out only to the “genuinely desperate”, he says. The money he spends is not loans, but outright charity. Most houses that he builds bear the name of the donor, like “O’Connor Illam”. “As for my name that appears somewhere on the foundation stone, its useful to ensure authenticity to the donor…” he adds. Together with support from the Little Way Association, brother Keane successfully launched a drinking water project in a village in Sivagangai. Apart from building homes for the homeless, Brother Keane also sought the help of the Edmund Rice family to adopt several children in Adigondahalli village, 25 km from the Bangalore city, in the Bangalore Archdiocese. The children receive tuitions, midday meals and other benefits. Though Brother Keane spent a good number of years in the teaching apostolate and had people like Sanjay Gandhi as his student in St. Columbus School New Delhi, he says he has found greater joy reaching out to the poor people of India. “It gives me a sense of satisfaction and peace. I also enjoyed working with the adivasis (aborigines) in Gujarat.” When asked to comment on what he felt about building huge churches, he smiles, putting a finger on his lips and says: “The Lord was happy in a stable in Bethlehem. No further comments please.” Thanks to the generosity of his own sister, he was able to build a small factory in Sivagangai and so provide a livelihood for many poor people. The government provides the spinning machines and raw material. With his responsibility as Executive Secretary of the National Assembly of Religious Brothers in India, Brother Keane lives in Bangalore with the CRI community. Appalled by the miserable living condition of the people living in a slum in Gudadahalli in Bangalore Archdiocese, he immediately took up building a new house in place of one that was almost crumbling. The Parish Priest of St. Anthony’s Church in New Gudadahalli, Father Philip Arockiadoss told SAR News, “The living conditions of several people in my parish is very sad; in some houses, more than 12 people live, some are forced to sleep outside because of overcrowding. Keane’s contribution is a great relief to the people here…” Robust and well-built, Keane walks healthy, talks humorously. A publicity-shy man but one with a dream for the poor says, “I hope we all work to improve the human condition. For me, that is true evangelisation.” This Irish Christian Brother (Congregation) sees no distinction between Hindu, Muslim or Christian. Anyone in desperate need gets his attention and sympathy, even if he really isn’t able to do anything at times. Recalling the most memorable moment in recent years, he says: “We were to have the inauguration of a newly built house and the husband of the lady was in jail. We worked out a way to get him released on bail just for a day so that he is present for the inauguration. It was unbelievable to see the amount of joy on his face and the faces of his family members and all the villagers on the day of the inauguration. He
[Goanet] Boost cashew production through better seed
http://news.webindia123.com/news/printer.asp?id=126127cat=India Boost cashew production through better seed, technology: CM Panaji | October 01, 2005 1:44:38 PM IST Goa Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane has called for capital investment in research and development to secure better seed and technology for boosting cashew production and productivity. Inaugurating a three-day convention on 'India Cashew Convention' last evening in the city, Mr Rane observed that use of extensive labour force in the cashew industry might become obsolete in about 10 years with the introduction of technologies for efficient peeling of the cashew shells to avoid wastage. He said there was a need for increasing the acrage of the crop to reduce imports of the kernel stock to meet the full capacity utilisation of the processing industry in the country, particularly in Goa. The research, he said, was meant for producing good seed for forward and backward integration of the industry involving all the stakeholders. ''Cashew is a poorman's crop and best for organic farming as it thrives even on fallow soil. It replenishes the income of the poor and hence the crop should be encouraged in a big way in all respects,'' Mr Rane said. Speaking on the occasion, Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) President Nitin Kuncolikar pleaded for focussing on value added opportunities awaiting the cashew industry. This, he said, could be hastened if the state government had initiated steps to take advantage of the new Special Economic Zones Act for setting up an agricultural Export Processing Zone in the state. He also said that the GCCI would soon approach the Delhi-based Technology Information Assessment Council (TIFAC) for assisting the cashew processing industry in Goa. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. Re: [Goanet] Disappeared on oherald.com?
Dear Constantino, As an ex-hostess of TAIP I can assure you that the goan percentage of staff working at Dabolim was quite large. To start with, all the Hostesses (including 2 Stewards in the last year of TAIP's existence) were goan. The only exception was D.Maria de Lourdes, a dedicated and competent Portuguese lady of noble origins, who was in charge of the girls. A considerable amount of personnel at Maintenance etc. were also goan. Eight of us ex-hostesses have worked, retired and still live in Portugal, 2 live in Goa, 2 expired during our time upto 1961. The 2 stewards split company, one went to Brazil the other stayed in Goa. All the pilots were from Portugal. The cooperation between them and us was excellent indeed. For what it is worth I can truly say that we were proud to be Goans working for TAIP. Hope I did not miss out on anyone, and if I did, please accept my apologies. Should anyone wish for more clarifications please feel free to call on me. Cheers. Patsy Almeida Cardoso - Original Message - From: Constantino Xavier [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: goanet@goanet.org Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 3:43 PM Subject: [Goanet] Disappeared on oherald.com? Dear Bernardo, is this the article which you say disappeared on Herald website? Can anyone confirm if this one, and the one on civil land encroachments by the Navy in Vasco, have been published in the print edition? Regarding the statement in the article: locals employed at TAIP (the erstwhile Portuguese airliner) It should be said that this is a political interpretation. Sure, TAIP where an initiative of the Portuguese colonial regime, but this tag erstwhile Portuguese airliner is also not correct: 1. TAIP means Transportes Aereos da India Portuguesa (Air Transports of Portuguese India) and has thus a local meaning, being an airliner specifically for Goans (and people from Daman and Diu). 2. Though established by Portuguese military officials, to a great extent TAIP was the product of the hard work of many Goans, from the construction sector up to the managment and technical sectors. Anyone has details on this goan percentage? 150 locals employed is not a small number. It could once again prove to many ou there that these colonial-time institutions had a very strong local (native, Goan) component, more than in other colonies. And that the period of the late 50's was witnessing an important trend of progressive empowerment of Goa, Goans and their autonomy. This is the impression I also get by many Goans who told me this in Goa itself. Constantino -- Fear of pro-Portuguese tag muffled voices against Navy With the liberation of Goa,Dabolim was occupied by Navy, and all equipments like VHF radars were misappropriated and even the inventory of stock which was carried out in February 1962 was seen as an effort to throw dust into the eyes of the public, since locals employed at TAIP (the erstwhile Portuguese airliner) were not taken into confidence. Naval authorities instead thought it fit to oust 150-odd Goans employed at the airport to prevent exposure of the reported misappropriation of equipments, as spoils of war. It is upon a hue and cry that some of the dismissed or retrenched staff were accommodated elsewhere other than in the actual position at airport. The dismissal/ retrenchment is detailed in the Judgement reported in AIR 1969 Goa 76, upon writ petition filed by an aggrieved employee of TAIP. The misappropriation of land and properties began by misusing the temporary legislation - the Defense of India Act, 1962, after sensing the attitude and apprehensions of the locals: any move by defense authorities were not resisted by locals, fearing that they may be accused of being pro-Portuguese or anti-national. The Defense of India Act, 1962 was enacted due to the Chinese Aggression, in order to provide precaution of any further aggression, and thereby take measures by providing Civil Defense to the citizens at the instance of the Union of India and or by the states when such exigencies prevail. The Defense of India Act, 1962 expired on 10 January 1968. But, six months later, the Naval authorities caused the requisition of about 5 lakh sq m of land around the then existing Dabolim airport in terms of Section 29 of the said Act and the proceedings were manipulated by initiating the Government of Goa, Daman and Diu to hand over the possession of land to Naval authorities along with the structures thereon. The Naval authorities ought to have released the land to the owners on revocation of 1962 Act, but instead the Navy made the State government issue notice under Section 36 of the said Act to acquire the requisitioned land, inspite of the fact that the land was not put to any use or any destruction of land or properties took place during aggression. Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Subject: Flight Enlightening... After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a gripe sheet, which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems; document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers. By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never had a crash event. P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough. S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft. P: Something loose in cockpit. S: Something tightened in cockpit. P: Dead bugs on windshield. S: Live bugs on back-order. P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute decent. S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground. P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear. S: Evidence removed. P: DME volume unbelievably loud. S: DME volume set to more believable level. P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick. S: That's what they're for. P: IFF inoperative. S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode. P: Suspected crack in windshield. S: Suspect you're right. P: Number 3 engine missing. S: Engine found on right wing after brief search P: Aircraft handles funny. (I love this one!) S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious. P: Target radar hums. S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics. P: Mouse in cockpit. S: Cat installed. And the best one for last ... P. Noise coming from under instrument panel.
