The first of December, 2005, was perhaps the really festive day at the
Fontainhas Festival of Arts [between Mary Immaculatem High School and
Bhandare Hospital, Panaji]. If H. Britton got the restive crowd into foot
tapping, Lorna swept them off their feet by belting out all time favourites
as if she had reached her prime once more! It was an unforgettable
experience...just listening to the legend...L I V E

Sonia Shirsat[ daughter of Dr. Shashi Shirsat and Alice Pinho-Shirsat]
filled all the gaps with her renditions of Lorna's songs. She even sang
together with Lorna. Status-4 provided the music and Richard Dias of
RadioActive was there in person to compere. Troy Furtado of Just Audio was
also at hand in case of sound glitches..of which there were none.

Tonight it will be a run for your money. The Konkani natak is named "Dhao,
dhao, dhaolo" meaning " I came/went a-running". The title hardly sounds as
emphatic in English as it does in Amchi bhas, Konkani. This is at Ralino
Square near Precy Building and the last Art Gallery in the anonio de Souza
house.

Devidas and his group will present the "Divli Nach" or the "lamp dance"
which is an essay in rhythm and balance with a burning oil lamp on the head.
This event is at the platform near Joshi Tutorials, Panjim Inn and People's
Panjim.

There is Western Classical music by Nauser Daruwala. If the 'nasha' hits you
, it wont be due to any 'dharu'. this is next to the St.Sebastian Chapel
famous for its "Quermesse". The carol singing last evening left me drowsy
till Lorna woke me up with her numbers. That is Friday for you.

On Saturday, Paint your face and put ballooons on your head near People's
Panjim between 6 and 8 P.M. If you are feeling young and chirpy, listen to
the Kid's band near the chapel. From 8 P.M. the night belongs to the one and
only percussionist of this kind.BONDO !! The Fontainhas Festival of Arts
will come to a close with a B A N G !

Viva Goa. Jai Hindand the rabble rousers can rest in peace till next
year.

Miguel

[Frederick Noronha, "Goa's
media: Too many blindspots"]

All this is by way of prologue to a strange piece in today's paper with a
headline about aviation spread right across one of the inside pages saying
one thing while the text says entirely the opposite! The facts presented
moreover are at variance with what the paper itself published not so long
ago (in fact just a few months ago) leaving us readers scratching our heads
in bewilderment.

The main problem however is that in the prevailing milieu about aviation
problems in Goa, the article seems to completely miss the significance of
what it is now saying. The upshot is that if what it is now talking about
materialises (albeit in a dozen years as stated) then Dabolim civil aviation
may be at risk not from Mopa but from the new airport reportedly coming up
across the southern border! The paper is blissfully unaware of this
prospect.

As for Mopa itself there is now an editorial in this paper which suggests
gratituitously that the Navy should have it and not civilians --
conveniently forgetting the tribulations of the past few decades at Dabolim!
The underlying theme is that of wishing a pox on one's (communal?) rivals,
in this case the fellow residents of (North) Goa! And this is after a
sanctimonious editorial by the same paper just a couple of days ago fearing
that "things [were] getting out of control" in aviation matters!

I really wonder what social purpose papers such as this serve!

After the recent Ambedkar Jayanti Day rape of a lady
passenger on a Mumbai bound train, security has been
beefed up by posting added police personnel on all
trains including local Mumbai trains.

But with so many Mumbai policemen having been
suspended and even terminated from service in recent
weeks for offences of rape and consumption of alcohol
while on duty it is like rubbing salt into the wound.

May be it is time to empower women with pepper sprays
as long as they solemnly undertake not to use them in
a fit of anger on their very own potent husbands or
caring lovers.

Nasci,

I agree with you that Dabolim has a feel and comfort of an old shoe.
However, much to our dislike we need to replace it with a new one sooner
then later. Moreover, the old shoe is in the custody of men-in-white; I
am told that they don't throw away anything from their inventory.

I am not particularly worried if Mopa takes ten years or more; a modern
airport with state-of-the-art technology is surely worth the wait.
Moreover, we will not be subjected to begging for extra landing slots
time and again.

A modern airport which blends beautifully with Goa's image and help's
Goa to prosper is all I am looking forward to.

complete,
if at all; Within just two years, the Nave can be asked to relocte by

Thats all for now from me. Read Valmiki Faleiro laatest presentation.

Well, many mails received asking me the exact price that one has to pay.

No, I am not running VCD selling business. I only try to reach Konkani/Goa
loving people
my own way.

All you have to pay is what you see i.e. The printed price on the VCD and the
postage
stamp (its face value), that's all.

I replied to some one as above = cost price, I have another mail from the same
person
asking 'what is cost price'?

Jiffy Envelopes/Packaging FREE (or optional)
Walking up to the Post office is FREE
Standing in the Q at post office counter FREE
Posting to all ON CREDIT (there could be some bad debts too).
Plus some more risks like lost/demage item is post etc

No profit?? Then why do I do this ?

Well, we all have our own way of showing our love and affection to some one..

So, I chose to show my love/affection to KONKANI/GOA this way.

And this is not a new thing for me, I am in it for the last 2/3 years.

Finally, before some one ask me how many VCDs I may have posted so far? Ans. is
about 18
in 2years.

Note: Last day to receive orders is this Saturday by 3pm IST

FW: BETTER CHOICES ALL THE TIME

"A group of alumni, highly established in their
careers, got together to visit their old University
of Notre Dame lecturer. Conversation soon turned
into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the
kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an
assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, some
plain looking and some expensive and exquisite,
telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the
lecturer said: "If you noticed, all the nice
looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind
the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for
you to want only the best for yourselves, that
is the source of your problems and stress. What all
of you
really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you
consciously went for the better cups and are eyeing
each other's cups."

"Now, if Life is coffee, then the jobs, money and
position in society are the cups. They are just tools
to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life
doesn't change." "Sometimes, by concentrating only on
the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it."

researchers. People who are not schooled and trained
in it should not attempt to masquerade as experts, and
dispense their opinions willy-nilly. They end up
mucking up the state of understanding in any field

the present case I submit that Gilbert is revising
what is known about de Orta, and also what is known
about the inquisition. Please note that Gilbert did
not tell us that de Orta's sister was burned at the
stake, and gave us his own speculative reasons for the
disinterment and burning of his bones several years
after his death.
--

Dear Santosh,

I take great objection to your objections. Please note that:

1) Throughout history the most outstanding research findings have been made
by people who are technically speaking not 'qualified' researchers. Was
Galileo qualified? Ok forget him. Issac Newton? Ok! Ok! Forget Newton. Was
Leanordo da Caprio qualified?

2) Gilbert Lawrence is giving us his interpretation of history which,
unlike ayurveda or para-psychology, is an imperfect social science. All of
history is interpretation and is re-interpreted in light of newer
discoveries or subjective fact manipulation. Gilbert Lawrence's
interpretation is as valid as any other - specially since he backing it up
with fiction that makes it eminently readable. His qualifications as a
researcher are not in question here. One doesn't become a renowned
tumorologist, and much in demand after-dinner speaker, without some
elementary knowledge of research.

3) Gilbert Lawrence has written two books which he has self published. He
has surely sold a lot of copies and continues to sell. How many fiction
books have you written Santosh? Who published them? Who reads them? And you
have the gall to question Gilbert's qualifications?! In fact Gilbert's
first book is used as a reference journal in many Writers' Courses:
Plagiarism 101 - Pitfalls of Not Providing Bibliography or References or
Due Credit.

4) Gilbert Lawrence gives lectures and presentation on Goan and Indian
history and culture at prestigious schools in the USA. You think the rave
reviews, that he humbly shares with us, would have been possible if he did
not do due diligence in his research? Do you think junior high school
students in the USA can't see falsified research when they see it?

5) Your patronising attitude to us 'lay folk' is unhealthy. Just because
some people have no logic in their writing does not mean the rest of us
simple folks will swallow everything unsuspectingly. We can always cross
check with Veronica Fernandes.

6) I don't think vulgar language like 'willy-nilly' is called for on this
forum even when referring to Gilbert's dispensations.

Cheers!

Cecil

This is the fifteenth posting of my trip to the icy continent. The others
can
be found in my blog at Link:
http://goantoantarctica.blogspot.com

Of course nothing is simple when it involves Antarctica. When you fly from
or to McMurdo it is mandatory that you wear certain articles of clothing in
case your plane is forced to land in the ice. These are the heaviest and
most cumbersome of pieces that were issued to us in Christchurch and include
our parkas, ski pants, gigantic boots that almost toppled me over and the
ugliest of mittens called bears' claws as they look just so. You also have
to pack your own survival hand luggage. Checking in means that you need to
show up at the counter a day in advance wearing all the mandatory stuff.
Then you and your luggage get weighed together! Shame on the man or woman
who exceeds the quota for really there is no way of knowing if you are
overweight or a bad packer. In this milieu both are bad.
The next day we were driven by Joaquim's roommate to the 'airport' which is
actually a thick slab of ice where planes land and take off. It took us more
than an hour of driving through fields of ice in huge Terra buses which if
the ice cracks, can stay afloat. Joaquim's roommate and our driver turned
out to be an anthropologist who had infiltrated the McMurdo world as kitchen
boy- driver to research how this community lives and functions.
We landed at the airport well aware that our wait would be long and our
waiting room tiny. Many decide to play Frisbee to stay warm - others just
huddled around. After more than two hours our plane arrived - a huge C5 US
Air Force plane not C141 as I had previously written. Although we had heard
about the discomforts of this flight we were not prepared for what we saw. A
helicopter was stuck right where our feet should have been and the seats
were simple hammocks. After all these are planes that move troops and relief
supplies. Our flight crew were air force personnel and they were good! They
almost lifted me and stuck me between two huge geologists who I knew had to
have been camping in the Dry Valleys because of their malodorous socks.
After our 'steward' set me down he harnessed me with several belts all
attached to various parts of the hammock - there was no away I could escape.
I was stuck in the middle with hundreds of passengers, my hand luggage on my
lap and my heaviest gear on me! That's when all my dormant phobias rose to
the surface in unison and I thought I was going to either die or scream.
Joaquim and Smelly Socks relieved me off my jacket and I felt much better
until I saw that I was right next to the men's toilet - a bucket with a
curtain around it. Apparently the women's privy was better but how could I
even get there? Then a package sailed past me - the stewards were
distributing food by tossing it from afar. I don't blame them - the aisles
were full of feet and bags. My knees were locked with those of a lady
zoologist! When the stewards had to get somewhere they just jumped over our
feet with all of us cheering and clapping! The noise from the engines was
deafening. Five hours later we landed in Christchurch which was at the peak
of its summer. It was impossible to stay a minute longer in those clothes.
One lady participant stripped to her leggings right in front of the
immigration officer. As an Indian raised to respect immigration officers, I
waited until I had gone through Customs.

Dhirio or Bhoilam Zogddim or Boilam Guero or Bull fights are banned in Goa by
Supreme
court order.

But who cares ? All are equal before law but it seems South Goa is more equal
than North
Goa.

Yesterday, there was well organised bull fight at Orlim, salcette with about
5000
spectators,lasting about 2hrs-Ref.GT
Thanks to the South Goa MLAs and MP & Police Mamas
'kuch bhi chalta hai'

I am sure police also got their 'hafta'.
Strangly, I did not see any of this in other Goan dailies.

Congratulations to Gomantak Times who reported this with photo in today's GT.

GT is still my No.1 News Paper.
Well done Team.
I am on your side not just over Bullfights but others issue too.

I wonder, after Mopa, what would be the next ? Bull Fights?

Some times laws are there but is closed books.
Shame on our Policemen and dirty politicians.
This is just a public incidence or tamasha. One can well understand level of
corruption
in Goa.

BTW, does any body remember the famous 'goddmachine' & 'Paklo'
When one died & the owner hired/played brass band at its funeral?

Here is the full set of "missed implications" for ready reference:

1. As already mentioned, the new facility is likely to pose as much of a
threat to Dabolim's civil aviation, as Mopa -- IN THE LONG TERM (10-15
years). {OK, maybe a little less since the talk is of Mopa being a
super-duper mega airport. The flip side of this however is that it may never
take-off!)

2. The focal organisation involved seems very high on bureaucratic
stone-walling but in a worrisome sense does not seem to know what "war
footing" means. 10-12 years? That is Phase 4 or 5!

3. Why are they talking about applications for additional land, expansion of
the facility on paper in future etc? What about the here and now and the
immediate future? Is it just a helipad, an airstrip or a decent sized jet
runway?

4. When can helicopter, jet trainer and Sea Harrier training operations from
Dabolim (GOA!) be shifted to this place? And what about those of MIG-29Ks a
couple of years hence?

These vital issues seem to have been overshadowed by the pre-occupation with
new civilian airports on or close to state borders!

I have just seen the DVD -Aleesha at VP SINARIS Panaji.
Infact, its VCD & DVD released same time but there is no demand for DVDs in
GOA or India
as most bollywood movies etc are sold on VCDs hence less publicity.

Aleesha, will be the first Konkani DVD so far.
There may be others which may have released abroad.

DVDs are always more expensive than VCDs

In this case, it is Rs.299, where as the same on VCD is Rs.199

New airport for Mumbai
The Asian Age India | Our Special Correspondents

<"Perhaps it ill be some distance away from the existing airport. Two or
three places have been seen, but nothing has been finalised yet," Union
civil aviation secretary Ajay Prasad said on Wednesday. "It will be a 100
per cent greenfield airport, a private-public partnership, on the lines of
the on-going Bangalore International Airport project," he said on the
sidelines of the Aerodrome India 2005 international seminar and exhibition
here. "The Centre will invite bids for the construction of the new airport
at Mumbai after the land is identified and finalised," he added.

On the proposed new airport at Mumbai, Mr Prasad said, "Aeronautical studies
were being carried out by international aviation organisations on the
suitability of sites. No time-frame can be set for inviting bids for this
new airport as they can be called only after the organisations complete
their thorough and detailed studies."

The proposed second international airport for Mumbai is now likely to be
located near Ulwe, in Navi Mumbai. Earlier, there were strong indications
that the new airport might be built in the Rewas-Mandwa region, but these
were later squashed due to a strong protest initiated by the local
population because, of the total project area of 45 sq km required for the
airport terminal, 20 sq km lay on the sea, necessitating the reclamation of
this area, which includes tracts of mangroves that would be destroyed.

Then there were plans to construct the new airport at Kopar, in Navi Mumbai,
wherein it was supposed to occupy an area of 1,350 acres. It was also
supposed to cater to both domestic and international traffic and was in no
way to pose a threat to the already existing Chhatrapati Shivaji
International Airport at Santa Cruz. The City and Industrial Development
Corporation had submitted a proposal providing for parallel runways,
construction of terminal buildings, cargo terminals and airline maintenance
buildings. It had also been asked to carry out a simulation study for
proposed operations at the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji International
Airport. >

Hello Joe

There is one fabulous magazine that comes from UK called WHAT HI FI Sound
and Vision priced at 3.90 Sterling. It=92s a monthly Issue and also another
one called HI FI CHOICE also for 3.90 Sterling. I believe this magazine is
sold all over the world, as it=92s available in Saudi too.

These magazines give all information and what product to buy what its ratings
are after it being tested by the professional team of WHAT HI FI and how much
it costs although all prices are in Sterling Pound.

This magazine will help anyone to make the right choice in buying Hi Fi
products, especially in Gulf as the prices in Gulf are far lower than the
ones mentioned in the magazine.

It was nice reading your article on VCD / DVD

Cheers

ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE REUNION ON 11 DECEMBER, 2005

THE ANNUAL REUNION OF THE ALUMNI OF ST.XAVIER'S COLLEGE, MHAPSA -GOA, will
be held on Sunday, 11 December, 2005 on the College campus between Cruz's
canteen and the residence/Hall No.64 from 10 A.M. onwards. Those who want to
skip mass can join at 11 A.M. The mass for the departed teachers and
students is at 10 A.M. Lunch is hosted by the College and is absolutely
without any strings.

St.Xavier's College, Mhapsa, is one of the first colleges set up in Goa. If
I am right, only Goa Education Society's Dhempe College at Miramar preceded
it.[ That Dhempe's is taken over by Dempo's DCT now, as was Dempo-Souza in
yester years, is another matter]. Set up in Bastora in 1963 and moved to
Mhapsa [then spelt as Mapuca ] in the 1970s, the St.Xavier's College has
produced a large number of professionals in various fields, both in India
and abroad. I am proud to have studied there while the HSS was still a
section of the college. The institution is also proud of our association
with it and has invited all student of the HSS upto 1989 to be members of
the ALUMNI ASSOCIATION. I have registered in 2003. The Life Membership fee
is just Rs.500/-. Peanuts for the NRI students. I do not know if one gets a
large jar of peanut butter for US$11.10 ;-))

Last year there were about 60 alumni at the meeting. almost as many attended
the previous year when we had the then high profile alumni and CM Manohar
Parrikar attending, too. It is hoped that more members and other former
students will attend. At the last Alumni meet it was suggested that teachers
and former teachers of St.Xavier's College be invited. The Principal, Mr.
Newman Fernandes, has responded positively to that. The Pressnote [published
in the GTimes on 06 Dec, 2005, page 3] invites the former teachers. The
present teachers will hopefully be there. They are a part of the host
organisation.

Please forward this to alumni of the St.Xavier's College, Mhapsa, whom you
are in contact with and are not subscribed to these d-lists. Those who can
attend please contact the college office on phone 0832-2262356 or email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to inform your participation. It is not a
must, just a courtesy to the host.

Those who are outstation and would like to be a part of the Alumni
Association as life time members, please send a DD/Cheque for Rs.500/- in
favour of St.Xavier's College along with your visiting card or name,
address, phone no. and /or email ID so that the receipt can be sent to you.
Help the institution to build the links between the former students, among
themselves and with the institution.

Mog asundi.

Dear Cecil,

There is no need to defend Gilbert's qualifications as
a research historian. After thinking about it some
more I have realized that I have no dispute at all on
that front. However, knowing that you possess a
particular expertise on the venereal aspects of
espionage, I was hoping that you would expound on
Gilbert's theory of husband's double agency as a
consequence of his wife's venereal affliction. The
Dhovi Khopti is particularly concerned about this
problem. President Pandurang is wondering if he should
cause some undercover agents to be outed on this basis
without his knowledge.

Cheers,

Santosh
