[Goanet] Aunty Maria Around the Clock - (V M de Malar)

2006-02-27 Thread Goanet News Service
Aunty Maria Around the Clock

by V. M. de Malar

Blame Charles Correia. Our much-decorated internationally renowned architect
came up with the look of the Cidade de Goa a couple of decades ago, and hotel
owners and interior designers all over the state have been ineptly following
his cue ever since. He showed that you could add character, well, by adding
characters painted on your walls, so now they all paint characters on their
walls. He took a modern, intelligently engineered, building and imbued it with
Goan feeling via murals and statues and so we have a rash of builders taking
modern, completely uninteresting, buildings and trying desperately to shoehorn
some character and local flavour by layering on murals, and adding statues,
and coming up with all kinds of gimmicks.

And so to the ultimate gimmick, in the new avatar of the landmark Fidalgo
Hotel in Panjim, which from the outside looks like it wishes to flight over to
the rest of its family in Times Square or Piccadilly Circus, but inside
scrambles to create something local in atmosphere. There's lots to commend in
the famous institution's renovation, the hotel remains reasonably priced and
professionally staffed and the atmosphere is quite cheery and pleasant. But
there are also elements that make it a useful example of what's happening to
our tourism industry, a bellweather of what is happening to Goa as a
destination, as a host culture, as a symbol and as an idea.

You walk into a modern lobby, complete with contemporary requirement of
bubbling fountain, with the reception on one side, smiling staff ready at
their posts exactly as you'd expect. The main décor is painted tiles, the
predictable old azulejos which the Iberians themselves adapted from Moorish
decorative traditions. Here's where the uneasiness starts, one prominent panel
of tiles depicts a Fidalgo, a Portuguese nobleman, attended by a servile black
figure, and another is an unbearably tasteless rip-off of a Mario Miranda
image. The former carries overtones of the colonial relationship, an idea of
subservient locals catering to every whim of the pampered European, it's an
archetype that the tourism industry in Goa loves to promote for obvious
reasons. And the Mario rip-off is just like all the others, which advertise
everything from beer to the state's own tourism board, a pale and lifeless
shadow of the original.

You walk to the coffee shop shaking your head, thinking about how badly
treated Mario Miranda is by his own people, and sit amidst a whole series of
more tile panels. There's a woman depicted in them, a slightly stout and
bespectacled, apron-clad, Goan with a worried look on her face. She's
executing a whole range of household tasks, there is "Aunty Maria on the
Rogddo" and "Aunty Maria ready to serve the coffee," and, very improbably and
inappropriately for a coffee-shop, even "Aunty Maria about to serve the wine.'
So, you start to get irritated all over again, because no Aunty in Goa opens
wine-bottles for the menfolk, let alone serves them, and then you stop short
in amazement, because around the corner comes Aunty Maria herself.

That's right, go to the Fidalgo coffee shop at any time, because it's open
twenty-four hours, and there is an Aunty Maria mixed in with waitresses from
Nagaland. It's non-stop, all-day-and-all-night, Aunty Maria. Not content with
tastelessly caricaturing a made-up Goan Aunty, the Fidalgo management has gone
one step beyond even Charles Correia's fertile imagination, they've created a
living and breathing tasteless caricature and set her to work serving mutton
chops to bemused tourists.

She's wearing the same shoes as the Aunty Maria in the tiled panels, she's got
the same checked apron and the same rounded glasses, and the same worried
expression, it's a totally surreal experience to watch her dish out chocolate
cake and coffee at two in the morning. For, this is what it has come to in Goa
in 2006, we're cloning Aunties and faking Mario Miranda paintings in a
desperate attempt to imbue faceless, characterless, concrete blocks with
something, anything, that feels like Goa. And at the same time, we're readying
ourselves to totally submerge the real Goa with these identical featureless,
characterless, concrete blocks. Madness? Go ask Aunty Maria what she thinks,
she's not going anywhere. (ENDS)

In early 1999, George W. Bush met with eight foreign policy advisors,
collectively known as the Vulcans, in his ranch at Crawford, Texas. He
was preparing for his White House bid. They were there to tell him about
the world.

Well into the briefing, Bush interrupted: "Wait a minute. Why aren't we

That "anyone" should be hired as a Forensic
Pathologist is not speculation. "Anyone" deserves that
job because he has proved that SFX is not an Egyptian
mummy. Moreover, he has done it without actually
examining the SFX remains or reading anything about
mummification, Forensic Pathology or SFX.

The SFX remains have never been subjected to modern
forensic analysis. This can easily be done if the
relevant authorities give the requisite permission.

For those who are really interested in mummification,
it would be useful to know that hundreds of other
mummified/saponified bodies have been found all over
the world, many much better preserved than SFX. Some
examples are the Taklamakan mummies of China, the
Greenland mummies, the Chosun Korean mummies and the
Buddhist mummies of Japan. They have been thoroughly
examined and their histological characteristics noted.
The mummification process, both natural or artificial,
has been well studied by modern Forensic science.

Cheers,

Santosh

[Goanet] Re: Goa for Goans

2006-02-27 Thread gilbertlaw
Response to Floriano.
Vote banks is nothing peculiar to Goa or India. Under different names,
(sometimes called voting blocks or party base), it is the basis of
democracy and elections. After the election the group "trades" the
banked-votes for social and economic progress and preferences.

The reason why many Catholic Goans complain about "vote bank" is because WE
(repeat WE) are apathetic / unable to work together to create a common
platform, common priorities and a "vote bank".

This inability to work together does not apply only to the Catholics in Goa. It
also applies to Goans in the diaspora. The only common platform diaspora Goans
rally around is a celebration "ani Scotch ani Sorpatel". This is thanks to our
"diaspora village presidents" and other "social coordinators". Then these Goan
"leaders" in the diaspora conveniently say, "We do not need a big Goan
association."

As the saying goes, "You have three Goans and five totally different
perspectives" on any given issue. And the successful Goans just elect to stay
away from all this Kerem-Kerem.

Kind Regards, GL

[Goanet] TIATRIST SAMUEL CARVALHO.

2006-02-27 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes

TIATRIST SAMUEL CARVALHO.

I am sure everyone will know who tiatrist Samuel Carvalho is. Hailing from
Majorda Salcette Goa, Samuel is currently one of the well known Goan Stage
writers, Directors and Actors. Currently he is in Kuwait as a visitor along
with his troupe of Ladies Show. His Tiatro “BHOGSONNEM” where all the
participants will be ladies only, some from Bombay while the rest from Goa
will be staged on Thursday 2nd of March 2006 at Hawally A/C Hall, starting
at 6.30 p.m. In all, Bhogsonnem will comprise 11 female artistes and the
roles of male artistes will be performed by them only. According to Samuel,
Bhogsonnem is his second drama, the first being “Hem Tumkam Sogleank” while
in between he produced “Portugues Goykar “ which was staged all over Goa and
in some of the countries in the Gulf as well. Samuel is not a fresher in
Kuwait, in fact he worked in Kuwait for many years for M/s Al Riyash Trading
Co. from the time he landed in Kuwait in 1991 after the invasion and
liberation of Kuwait and left Kuwait for good almost after a decade. During
his residence in Kuwait he acted in some of the Tiatros organized by the
Kuwait Goan tiatrists, one being that of Anthony de Majorda and also of Jose
Rod where he performed the role of a “Bebdo”. First time in his lifetimet he
acted in Goa for Patrick Dourado’s “Noketr” and gained tremendous goodwill
and abundant appreciation from the audience. His favourite role is that of
a villain but he is also known as a good character actor. As a tiatrist he
acted for many of the top directors namely C. D. Silva, Anthony San, Jose
Rod, Milagres de Chandor and Comedian Agostinho.

This is the first time he is touring Kuwait with his own troupe and own
drama comprising all the ladies except Anil Kumar who is his Stage Manager.
Before coming to Kuwait, Samuel and his troupe already staged this show
“Bhogsonnem” in Qatar on 17th of this month (February 2006) and received
good response there, said Samuel. When questioned about his expectation in
Kuwait, he immediately answered “I expect very good crowd in Kuwait” because
very many people are anxiously waiting to see this show as this is the first
time all ladies show is going to be staged in Kuwait. Speaking about this
show, he said people must watch how beautifully and smartly these ladies are
performing, people must, he further said, watch how some of the ladies are
imitating Trio Kings – M. Boyer and of course William de Curtorim. And to
give an extra booster for this show, he said he brought number one musician
from Nuvem Goa, Norman Cardoso.

While concluding, Samuel said that he would love to see every tiatro writer,
director and actor/actress in Kuwait attending this show and analyzing the
roles of every female artiste who is giving her total dedication for
attaining success. Expressing his gratitude for all his artistes, Samuel
said that he is very grateful to all his artistes for cooperating with him
so much and supporting him in every respect.

His next drama “Boro Tiatrist” will be released in Goa in July and later on
he will stage this drama in Mumbai, Kuwait and other parts of the Gulf. All
the topmost artistes from Goa and Bombay will participate in this new
Tiatro.

Yes, there may be a problem of screening the floats for quality including
humour, music, and dance. This might also reduce the strain(?) on the young
dancers if the length of the parade is shortened a bit. Too much repetition
of tribals, fisherfolk, skeleton masks etc. There also needs to be better
sequencing in terms of not allowing too much time between floats sometimes.
The crowds of spectators seem to be getting bigger each year. They spill
over onto the parade route and make the whole thing a bit unrulier than it
should. But, net-net, its quite entertaining. Its far better than having
some communally tinged processions in other places.

[Goanet] A Letter to Babush - by Ethel da Costa

2006-02-27 Thread Cecil Pinto

HEART TO HEART
By Ethel Da Costa

Be Careful Of The Company You Keep

Who exactly do you want to be? What kind of person do you want to be? What
are your personal ideals? Whom do you admire? What are their special traits
that you would make your own? It's time to stop being vague. If you wish to
be an extraordinary person, if you wish to be wise, then you should
explicitly identify the kind of person you aspire to become, so you can
refer to this as your self-definition.

My dear Babush,

There are much festivities around the place, but there are gnawing
questions creeping up my brain when the dead of night falls on the city and
the ageless Mandovi silently heaves her way to the sea. We have met on
several occasions and exchanged views. Views pertaining to Goa,
apprehensions on the course of our politics, and finally, the future of our
State and her people. I agree you are a product of the times, and I'm told
your heart is big as your purse.

Circumstances mould our actions, and make us what we are. But it is deep
concern that compels me to write to you, because I hope when you have a
moment to contemplate as twilight shadows the sun, you understand the
'whys' of your power moves. Most importantly, I hope you understand where
these concerns come from. Panjim will go to the vote booth soon. And with
that your 30 candidates. I have never seen their faces before, especially
when the city groans with malaise of human avarice, except now. Each swears
gold at the end of the rainbow. Many promises dot their tongues. But it is
only the heart that can understand the grievances of this city and the
people who care for her and work tirelessly for her upkeep. We do not have
political ambitions. Yes, we understand you do. I'm told the only way to
change the system is to 'become the system,' by infusing it with good
intentions, focused action and purposeful direction, with the hope that
good wins eventually. By God, I hope these are your ideals too. Corruption
has become a way of life in Goa. You have understood it well. You have
fought your own political battles using tools of the 21st century - tooth
for a tooth, money for money. People today fall like nine pins at the sight
of a blank cheque book, selling home, hearth and values for temporary
prosperity. Every politician has a game plan. I know you have yours too.
But in your ardent need for absolute power, please do not sell Goa for a song.

Let your candidates know that politics calls for selfless service. It
appeals to realize a higher self, for a goal towards a State's
self-sufficiency. It requires exemplary examples to lead the younger
generation into new territory of actualization. It is this plea for the
next generation (since you and I would want to see our grand children
working towards protecting whatever little is left of our land) that I
write to you. Because you are intelligent to understand where it comes
from. That there are no motives, but only concerns to safeguard Panjim and
Goa from the sharks of corruption, with land disappearing like grains of
sand slipping fast from a palm. Every generation looks forward to a coming
of a role model, self styled gurus who are new wine in old bottles. We are
no longer fooled by clever words and marketing hype. Instead, let's work
together towards building a city that will become the role model of the
country. By taking charge of our garbage, water and power distribution,
public utility facilities, by providing better infrastructure and medical
services for the disadvantaged, where discipline and respect for the laws
of the land become a way of life. Where goondagiri is not the answer to
earning respect, or breaking laws as a show of macho-ism.

Let's teach our children that with great power comes greater
responsibility. Are you capable of putting service before self?

With Goa's concern at heart,

Me

example of Xenophobia.

May be, someone who knows (Sachin perhaps) will look at the issue more

1. IF Arcelor was up for sale ?

2. IF Arcelor has some EU Govts as owners?

3. IF these Govts. have some responsibilities to secure the employment of
their citizens (read voters)?

4. How the European Commision & its anti-monopoly organs would read this
hostile take-over attempt esp in view of previous actions ?

5. How one would consider Mittal ( currently one of the UK's richest men-

I personally agree that Xenophobia occurs in ALL countries, but I wonder if
Mittal's is the appropriate example to illustrate that Xenophobia.

Not when he has his OWN steel empire based in two major countries in Europe!

Santosh,
Moral tenets are moral compasses. Organized religions
like Buddhism and Jainism, which you claim are
atheist, have religious tenets, which are the same as
moral compasses FYI. Disorganized atheists have
whatever may be convenient at any given time.
Hopefully the law provides them with a minimal moral
compass. However, there are many atheists whose moral
compass may even be superior to people of a certain
faith who use the a la carte approach.

[Goanet] Govt asked to convince Goa to lift chicken ban

Govt asked to convince Goa to lift chicken ban
Monday February 27 2006 10:01 IST

BELGAUM: The directors of Kwality Animal Feeds Private Limited
(KAFPL), Belgaum, has urged the state government to pressurise the
government of Goa to lift the ban on import of chicken from Karnataka,
which is free from infection.

A memorandum regarding the same was submitted to Deputy Commissioner
Dr Shalini Rajneesh, here recently. It stated that the company (KAFPL)
was engaged in chicken production through contract farming in the
district and about 70 farms were working under the same, producing and
selling almost 10,000 birds a day. A large portion was sent to Goa,
which was a major consumption centre.

It also said that the bird flu incident in Maharashtra had prompted
the ban from the Goa government importing chicken from any state.
Though there was absolutely no threat of bird flu in Karnataka, the
ban had resulted in complete halt of chicken trade between both the
states.

The trade ban had also resulted in stock piling of the grown-up
broilers in the farms and was leading to uneconomical maintenance and
deaths. The bird flu had created panic among the public as it
curtailed the local consumption by 5 to 10%, the memorandum added.

The memorandum asked the States help in convincing the people of
Belgaum and Goa that the chicken produced in Karnataka were free from
infection. It also asked the government to promote chicken consumption
by organising chicken rallies and melas, which KAFPL was ready to
sponsor.

The memorandum was submitted by KAFPL directors, B U Beny, R S
Mamdapur, Hamid Ankalgi, Shakeel Bagalkoti, P K Nakadi, Vilas Desai,
Sayyad and others.

Mario, you say

Floriano responds..

You are very right on the above. It is the people who choose for themselves
in a democracy. Honesty, is another ball game altogether.
Which honest person will spend a load of his hard-earned money to wnat to
get elected? Therefore all we get is seemingly 'Honest crooks'

On manipulation:
Without manipulations and strong arm tactics the Portuguese hadn't reach
places to colonize. They all did.
However I have grown up in the economically starved Goa under the Portuguese
rule, where my father had to come home to us like a wanted criminal and 60%
of his earnings taken away by taxes. But if I have grown up in difficult
times, I have also grown up with values which the Portuguese pormoted.
The manipulations I am talking about is the VOTE BANK MANIPULATIONS TO
REMAIN AND/OR COME TO POWER.

Let our democracy go ahead. It must. But let it go ahead with written down
roadmaps by political parties so that the election time promises do not
vapourize in thin air once the elections are over. Let people elect
candidates who do not have money to spend on them. Let the parties say they
will offer 'NO SECOND TERM' to their candidates. And if the India wants to
survive in the true democratic tradition, then let NATIONAL parties only
contest Parliamentary elections and be banned from contesting State/REGIONAL
elections. Only in this case, the sucking-up to National Parties by States
will end.

[Goanet] Latest alcohol findings

2006-02-27 Thread Cecil Pinto
The Committee for procuring Geographical Indicator status for Goan Feni
has, in the course of their investigations, been uncovering strange facts
about other alcohol forms and their side-effects.

For example the results of a recent analysis revealed the presence of
female hormones in beer. Men

should take a concerned look at their beer consumption.

The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain
phytoestrogens) and that by drinking

enough beer, men turn into women.

To test the theory, 100 men drank 8 pints of beer each within a 1 hour
period. It was then observed

that 100% of the test subjects:

1) Argued over nothing.
2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong.
3) Gained weight.
4) Talked excessively without making sense.
5) Became overly emotional.
6) Couldn't drive.
7) Failed to think rationally
8) Had to sit down while urinating.

No further testing was considered necessary.

These findings further strengthen the case for the benefits of consuming
Feni instead of other forms of alcohol.

Cheers!

Cecil

Churchill wants assurance from govt on Dabolim expansion

NT News Service

Margao, Feb 25: Seeking an assurance from the state government that
the Dabolim airport would be expanded and retained, the South Goa
Congress MP, Mr Churchill Alemao said that if the Congress party
intended to rule the state then it would have to scrap the Mopa
airport proposal.

Significantly Mr Churchill came out with this observation within a
couple of days of the Congress chief, Ms Sonia Gandhi advice to state
leaders to maintain restrain.

Mr Churchill was emphatic that this issue need to be solved before the
next assembly elections lest the airport controversy snowball into an
issue if not sorted out before the next general elections.

He also said that the government has to think of upgrading Dabolim or
else, the government would lose its grip on Goa.

Announcing his plans of going to the people by holding public meetings
across the state, Mr Alemao told reporters that starting from March 2
at Vasco, meetings would be held on March 7 at Navelim and then on
March 9 at Curtorim. Mr Alemao along with Mr Radharao Gracias stated
that the MLA,s of respective constituencies should treat the meetings
as an open call and use it as a platform to state their stands on the
issue.

The duo also charged the navy of using INS Hansa for other purposes
other than defence. They have a golf course and a huge football
ground. Both these spaces can be utilised for the expansion of Dabolim
airport, Mr Alemao said. Mr Gracias welcomed the statement of the
Maharashtra government, which said that the state was ready to build
its own airport at Sindhudurg, saying, this would solve the problem
once and for all. Ms Sonia Gandhi should intervene and solve the
problem.

The MP suggested that since the Rane government was adamant, it should
get expert advice on the feasibility of Mopa. Look at the Roman
Konkani script and the Devanagri script issue. Today people want the
Roman script. The same will happen with the airport issue, but it will
be too late when people will prefer Dabolim,he remarked.

The MP reiterated that the erstwhile BJP-led government of Goa was
dislodged mainly to ensure that the Congress would do something for
the betterment of the Goan people, who stand to be adversely affected
by the proposed Mopa airport. If Mopa becomes a reality then the Goan
tourism industry will collapse and the only beneficiary will be
Maharashtra, he said adding that Goans should understand these
factors and should support Dabolim to become an international airport
and not a Mopa.

[Goanet] RE: Churchill wants whitepaper on airport before elections To kick-start campaign on March 2

2006-02-27 Thread Philip Thomas

1.

This is clearly a "miss". There doesnt seem to be any chance whatsoever of
the Rane govt issuing a white paper on Mopa. It is probably banking on the
PM to give his green signal so as to treat the project as a "fait accompli".
Churchill's timing may be a bit off. This should have been called for 6
months ago.

2.

Another clear "miss". Maharashtra is zeroing in on a second Mumbai airport
at Navi Mumbai. So this idea of Churchill's is gratuitous. Besides, if push
comes to shove, southern Maharashtra may decide it can get by with the
planned Rs 15 crore (only!) upgrade of the airport in Belgaum, Karnataka.
Belgaum's surface transport links to Mahrashtra may be OK or can be upgraded
for this purpose. So Mopa can be dispensable one way or the other. But this
raises a pertinent question which I have posed at the end.

3.

This is a real "hit", if it is true! Due to a lack of sufficient focus on
Dabolim in the media we get to hear this kind of thing very late in the day!
Surely it has been going on for a long time and is not an overnight
development!

4.Question: OK let's suppose that the PM gives Mopa the thumbs down. Will
the Churchill story end there? Will this be enough for Churchill or will he
ask for more just like Oliver Twist? For example what will he have to say
about any upgradation of road transport between North and South Goa. Will he
say "no" to that too? Only time will tell, na? Cheers.

Goan identity showcased at Margao floats
BY HERALD CORRESPONDENT

MARGAO, FEB 26 - The uniqueness of Goan identity was amply demonstrated
here this evening as hundreds of Carnival revellers from all walks of
life thronged to the city to witness colourful parade of floats which
wended their way through the city streets and culminated at the Margao
Municipal square.

The Chief Guest Dr.Wilfred D'Souza was seen seated on the dais at least
45 minutes earlier before the floats began to arrive at around 5.30.p.m.
at the Municipal square.

Attired in varied colours and dresses, the spectators lustily cheered
the floats which depicted various scenes of Goan lifestyles such as
paddy cultivation, sugarcane plantations, fishing activities, transport
system etc.

Young girls and boys danced to the tune of lovely music while the young
and the old sprayed powder in the traditional Goan style, some men were
seen dressed in the women's attire, which created a real carnival mood.
While floats such as the "Goencho San Joan", "Save Goa", "Goenche
Karvi", depicted various phases of Goan lifestyle, there were commercial
and individual floats too that made their appearance today. A total
number of 82 floats participated, thus giving a big response to the
Margao Carnival Committee.
Among those on the dais were MLA Banu Azgaoncar, Damu Naik, MMC
Chairperson Piedade Noronha and the MMC Councillors. The Margao Police
headed by Police Inspector Santosh Dessai, under the supervision of
Dy.SP Tony Fernandes and overall supervision of SP Shekar Prabhudessai
performed well in making the occasion a grand success.

[Goanet] RIBANDAR FEEDS ON CRUMBS FROM THE MASTER'S TAPLE

2006-02-27 Thread airesrod
Ribandar which comprises of Wards 29 & 30 of the 30
member Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) has
always been treated as the poor relation, at the tail
end of any budget.

It is physically clearly detached from the City of
Panaji by a 3km long causeway - perhaps this is cause
of its neglect. Though officially part of the City of
Panaji, it has all the trappings of a rural area due
to the overall neglect in terms of civic neglect and
unreliable infrastructure.

It would have made more sense to bifurcate Ribandar
and amalgamate part of it in neighbouring Old Goa
Panchayat and the other part into the neighbouring
Chimbel Panchayat.

This would have at least meant much less in terms of
the current exorbitant taxes and freedom from the
bureaucratic red tape that has to be endured by
virtue of being officially part of the Corporation of
City of Panaji.

The people of Ribandar are not very demanding. Their
twin longstanding demands for a football ground and a
community hall cum recreation park have remained
unfulfilled for decades.

Strewn garbage, biting stray dogs and erratic power
and water supplies continues to cast a shadow of doubt
whether there at all exists a system that provides
civic amenities in return for the high civic taxes the
people of Ribandar most unfairly are made to shell
out.

Sonia Gandhi Rekindles Hopes of Dhangars

by Nandkumar Kamat

THE ancient pastoral community of Goa-Dhangar-Gouly with just 7,583
population is one of the most vulnerable and backward community in the
world. It was not included as a "tribe" in the schedule of the
constitution along with the rest three tribes — Gavade, Kunbis and
Velips in 2002. The BJP government led by Mr Manohar Parrikar had
taken some laudable steps to address their grievances. The Congress
party was always sympathetic to them but the political condition in
Goa and at national level did not permit their leaders to follow up
the case at the highest level. Taking the benefit of the visit of
Shrimati Sonia Gandhi, the chief minister Mr Pratapsing Ra ne raised
the issue of granting them the "Scheduled tribe" status in the
presence of Quepem MLA and GIDC chairman Mr Chandrakant Kawlekar who
belongs to that community and has been consistently in the forefront
to champion their cause. Soniaji was sympathetic to the issue and
agreed to meet the members of the community. Despite her busy schedule
on February 23, before the inauguration of the Rajiv Gandhi IT
habitat, an appointment was fixed at Cabo Raj Bhavan. It was a very
brief meeting but as a member invited to be a part of the delegation
of the Dhangar-Gouly community of Goa, I returned with a positive
feeling that at least now the long pending demand of the community may
be met because none other than the Congress party president and
chairman of UPA national coordination committee Madam Sonia Gandhi had
shown sympathy and understanding of their case.

I have met many national and international politicians but the
simplicity and the positive approach of Sonia Gandhi was touching.
Since 2003, thanks to the pro-active approach of ex-leader of the
opposition and senior tribal leader of Goa, Dr Kashinath Zalmi, I was
given an opportunity to be of some service to the community
specifically to prepare an ethnological report officially under the
chairpersonship of sociologist Dr Bernadette Gomes in 2003 and to
advocate their case at government level. The delegation which met Mrs
Gandhi under the leadership of Mr Chandrakant Kawlekar had requested
me to present their case to her in brief.

When we reached Raj Bhavan there were many women from the community
dressed in their colourful traditional attire. But the security people
did not permit more than six members at a time. When we were called
in, I found that in the main hall Soniaji was surrounded by a group of
Dhangar-Gouly women. Mrs Margaret Alva and State congress president,
Ponda MLA Shri Ravi Naik were accompanying her. Soniaji appeared
different to me compared to her image portrayed in the media. She was
all smiles, very disarming and welcoming. Having sensed the importance
of the time I told her that the issue of granting "Scheduled tribe"
status to the Dhangar-Gouly community is an issue of empowering the
weaker sections — a commitment of her government and the Dhangar-Gouly
community of Goa is one of the most vulnerable tribal community on
earth. They have no title to their traditional pastures, their
dwellings and could be easily displaced. When I showed her the copy of
the official ethnological report, she said, "could I have that
report?" I immediately gave her my personal copy and told her that it
is being examined by the Registrar General of India (RGI) to determine
whether the Dhangar/Gouly community deserves a "Scheduled tribe"
status. Madam Soniaji, I said, it may need a constitutional amendment
to include the community as "scheduled tribe".

Since she had shown keen interest in studying the issue I could see
that the report would be very useful to make a strong case. The
president of Dhangar Samajonnati Mandal Mr Laxman Kawalekar then
presented a memorandum to her. We left the hall with a positive
impression because Soniaji appeared to be genuinely sensitive to the
issue which she had already discussed during the previous night's
dinner at the chief minister's residence. Now after personally meeting
the community members and getting a copy of the official report and
the memorandum there was a definite possibility that she would take
some positive steps after reaching New Delhi.

It is really pathetic that the Dhangar-Gouly community leaders have
been made to run from pillar to post on their genuine demands for the
past 40 years. Earlier their case was rejected because the previous
report did not convince the RGI that they deserved a "scheduled tribe"
status. So when the constitutional amendment was moved in 2002, three
other communities of Goa earlier classified as OBCs were included as
"scheduled tribes". The Dhangar-Gouly community scattered in 110
hamlets in ten talukas of Goa except Tiswadi was disappointed. Efforts
began afresh to prepare a new ethnological report. The government led
by Mr Manohar Parrikar gave the community leaders a sympathetic
treatment.

Sunday Reflections - An aid to Sunday Liturgy

27-Feb-2006     Dear Friend,     It is a fact that millions of people love to watch football hockey, baseball and cricket test matches. It is fun to watch teams pit their strength against each other. While we enjoy watching others being tested we ourselves do not enjoy being tested and tried. Students, by and large hate tests and workers shun evaluations. Yet the only way of knowing that we are up to the mark is self-evaluation and being put to
the test. Our faith matures only through trials and temptations; even Jesus was tempted. Have an empowering weekend! Fr. Jude     Sunday Reflections:   First Sunday of Lent        Repent, change and believe.  05-Mar-2006     Readings: Genesis 9:
8-15;  1 Peter 3: 18-22;  Mark 1: 12-15;        The first reading from the book of Genesis speaks of the first of the 'friendship-agreements', covenants that God established with Noah and his descendants after the flood. Each covenant that God made with his people was necessitated by the situation the people found themselves in. Before the covenant with Noah, evil was on the increase since Adam's sin and Cain's murder of Abel.
God had sent the flood to destroy that evil age and permit a new beginning with a new creation. The symbol of that covenant was 'the bow in the clouds'-the rainbow- which was originally a sign of peace; it embraced the entire human race, and all of creation. This would be a sign of God's constant desire to embrace all peoples; a sign of hope and new life.     In the second reading St. Peter reminds his readers that an outward sign of the Covenant that God made with his people is baptism.  Baptism not only removes Original Sin but is also our birth into Christ -the way we become adopted children of God, heirs of heaven, and temples of the Holy Spirit. Peter points out that the waters of baptism are an antitype of the waters of the flood. The
floodwaters destroyed almost all the people except Noah's family. The waters of Baptism on the other hand are the cleansing agent that saves all.      Today's gospel reminds us that after his baptism Jesus led by the Spirit spent forty days and forty nights in the desert, during which time he was tempted by Satan. The Spirit drove Jesus into the desert to confront the enemy, Satan head on. There is a sense of urgency here as the Spirit had filled Jesus with zeal and power to commence his mission, to recall mankind from the ways of sin and to restore the rule of God. Eager to begin his mission, empowered by the Spirit, Jesus declares war against Satan by venturing into the desert, which people traditionally believed was the abode of the evil one. By entering this territory Jesus was taking
the battle into enemy territory. By remaining there for forty days and forty nights, a period of fullness, he wanted to symbolize that this was no passing battle but a declaration of total war against evil.      An Officer and a Gentleman In the movie An Officer and a Gentleman, we are taken inside a boot camp where candidates are trained to be flight officers. In the film Richard Gere intent on being a flight officer endures every test and challenge his tough drill sergeant throws at him. In the end Richard emerges from the training grounds a changed man.  Upon entering the boot camp he was very selfish, but in camp he learned how to reach out and help his
classmates, he felt real pain when his friend committed suicide, and he proved himself to be a true gentleman by marrying his girlfriend. -Today we begin the season of Lent, a spiritual boot camp in a sense.    Albert Cylwicki in 'His Word Resounds'     Some would question how the Holy Spirit could lead Jesus to be tempted. Firstly one should note that to be tempted is not the same as to sin. Temptations, are not there to make us fail, but -as with an athlete or a student - to make us better and stronger. In Jesus' case this test was to be a dramatic conflict between him and Satan. The result of this first bout with Satan was victory for Jesus but the war
would continue till the final victory of goodness over evil. The call of Jesus to join him in this battle, "Repent and believe the Good News," echo's during this season of Lent. To repent is to break our ties with evil in our thoughts, words and deeds. And to believe means to move more and more towards the mind of Jesus.     "No temptation is too great to be overcome. "My grace is sufficient for you." Jesus assures us. The final responsibility for evil in the world rests with us mature human beings. Evil can only exist if we accept those seductive invitations to flaunt divine wisdom, especially the invitations to greed and self-aggrandizement." -Eugene F. Lauer. To repent, to fight against temptation and evil is a lifetime's task. Jesus did not overcome Satan in the wilderness; he
 achieved that only in hi

Misery in Goa
BY ZARIN AMROLIA

Set in Goa, the book conveys to the reader a feeling of isolation and
loneliness, which is experienced by many in today's world

The Girl
Sonia Faleiro
Penguin Viking
Rs. 250

A girl commits suicide in a gloomy village of Goa and the story
begins... Sinking into flashback, the book has two characters - two men
who have been closest to the protagonist 'Girl'. Throughout the book
these two characters contemplate each event of the 'Girl's' life, to
figure out what led to her suicide. Flipping through the book the
feelings of gloom, depression, loneliness, and abandonment stare in your
face from every page.

The graph of the Girl's' life, the actions of the characters, as well as
the descriptions of the village in which the story is set cry out the
feeling of being forsaken by the rest of the world. Though the setting
is in Goa, it is a gloomy, isolated Goa completely contrasting the sunny
sands, drinks and dance that are synonymous to this city. "I did not
make a conscious effort to make the book gloomy. I started this book
when I was writing my thesis while studying MSC in the University of
Edinburgh. I haven't structured the book and neither are my characters
inspired by anybody. I just started writing and this is the result. I am
a Goan and the memories and feelings of loneliness were stronger because
of the distance and my longing for my hometown when I was studying. I
guess that is what came out in the book.

The setting of this book is not just from one village but a composite of
the various villages in Goa that I have visited," explained author Sonia
Faleiro, about her debut novel. As the story goes, the protagonist of
this book falls in love with a backpacker who moves in with her for a
while, but one fine day he is gone without as much as a goodbye. The
'Girl' pines away with the feeling of abandonment, and her situation is
worsened when she discovers her pregnancy. After her death the lost
lover returns, consumed with guilt, to live in her house. "This story
is about one direction that people take to cope with the situations that
life gifts them. The Girl enters into a life whose consequences she
cannot cope with. So she decides to get out of her suffering once and
for all," said the author, who is currently working as a journalist in
Mumbai.

Written well and the book does make an easy reading but it leaves the
reader with a sad feeling in his throat. Quite descriptive, the
characters can be related with. "I will be writing a fiction and a
non-fiction next," concluded the author.

I don't know how this compares with the Carnavales of
the past. But I've received this email from a close
relative in Goa:

"As usual the carnival floats did their rounds
yesterday, and there are the usual dances etc. I was
watching the floats on the TV, it was relayed live.
What I noticed was that in many floats, the joy and
fun of carnival was missing, the people in the floats
were participating for the money I guess ! Anyway,
some of the floats were good, and many were pathetic !
I also watched the carnival floats of Madeira,
Portugal, relayed this evening on the RTP channel, and
wow, what a show it was - the costumes were so
colourful and fabulous, and the 'joie de vivre' of the
Portuguese people was exhilarating."

Cheers,
