BS Corporate Bureau in New Delhi | October 15, 2005 15:47 IST Air Sahara has triggered a price war on the India-US route following its tie-up with American Airlines. For a direct service between India and the US, it will charge Rs 38,000 for a round trip - at least 30 per cent cheaper than existing fares. Other airlines operating services in the India-US sector said they were evaluating the development and may respond by lowering their fares. Competition will always result in lower prices. We are looking at the new fares announced today and will take a call on it in some time, said an executive with a leading European carrier, which operates services connecting India and the US. American Airlines and Air Sahara have entered into an agreement allowing the US carrier to serve the lucrative India-US route using the Indian carrier's license on a revenue share basis. The agreement, known as code-share agreement, will allow American Airlines and Air Sahara to offer tickets to customers on each other's behalf. The passenger traffic between India and the US is estimated to be over 2.75 million and growing over 5 per cent. As per the agreement between the two carriers, a passenger from major Indian cities will be able to fly to any of the major US cities for Rs 38,000. The services on this sector will start on November 17 on the Delhi-Chicago route. The special fares would be available till February 28 next year, but not for travel between December 16 and January 15. The fares exclude security surcharge and applicable taxes. The code-share contract would enable the US carrier's passengers to avail of easy connections within India an the US through each others network. The two carriers expect traffic between Delhi and Chicago to be 2 million passengers. Air Sahara will carry the domestic passengers in India to Delhi, which our point of operation in India and American Airlines will fly the domestic US passenger to Chicago as feeder to this service. The service between the two cities will be operated by American Airlines. This is just the beginning of the alliance. We are looking at ways to take it beyond the current levels, said Athar Khan, managing director, Asia Pacific, American Airlines. This will also be the first direct service between the two countries, with other services by European, South East Asian and Gulf carriers are through hubs in these regions. According to Khan, the direct service would help passengers save substantial amount of time. Besides Delhi, the special fares would be available from other Indian destinations like Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore. Well, I will not give the answer this time. You please read this and find the answer yourself. Banning import of Meat products is not the new thing here infact, if you read my past mails/postings you will find that the ban was in place for about 10 years now. About 8 years ago, when i arrived at LGW, I was a victim too they confiscated about 2000 sausages and I was let of by giving few leaflets regarding ban on meat products imports. Since then I never carried sausages with me but see what happened during my this visit from Goa. Because I was never ever searched after that incidence, this time I got tempted to bring some sausages with me just about 300 only. I packed it in my handbag (used all pages of sunday navhind times + 3 separate plastic Tesco type bags packed tight to avoid any strong smell but can you really stop the smell? ) I boarded Virgin Atlantic Flight at Mumbai around 2.30pm and left the bag in my overhead locker. Few minutes later (airbone), there come a general annoucement both in English Hindi saying meat or milk products are not permited to bring into UK if you do carry with you then please pass thru the RED CHANNEL and declare . They will simply take it away and destroy. No fines or penalties. And if you pass thru the GREEN channel and if meat products found then you will be fined or even sent to prison or both. On arrival, my heart was beating.. but I was lucky this time. I know they dont search all passengers but can we really afford to take the risk ? Read further.. If you do bring food items into the UK and are unsure whether they are allowed, go to the HM Customs and Excise Something to Declare or Red Channel exit for advice and to avoid any penalties. If you have items that are not allowed, they will be taken away and destroyed, and no further action will be taken. There are strict Customs controls in place. If you break the rules and Customs Officers find undeclared items you could face delays, be fined or even sent to prison. 2. What is an illegal import? The rules mean that if you travel to any country outside the European Union including USA, Australia New Zealand, it is illegal to bring meat and milk-based products for your personal use back into the UK. There are also limits on bringing back other food items, including fish, shellfish, honey, eggs and certain types of fruit and vegetables. It is illegal to bring back more than the permitted levels. 10. What are the penalties for personally importing plant or animal products? Sorry for the delay. The answer is A. (there were 2 correct answers, total feedbacks 21). The Checking In system will simply not let you in if you arrive even at 6.30am (in this case). The system/airline will treat your case as 'NO SHOW' and you will have to come back home dissapointed and with no refund at all (specially when u buy on special offer). Morever, even if the system let you in, there may be no seats available etc The abv rule may not apply if .. You are advised by the airline about the delay. You have Checked In Online or telechecking in etc If in doubts, always phone the airline. And sometimes, we think we are too smart.. Look at me, on an average, I spent about 100 hrs airbone every year, and I did not know this and I nearly lost my chance to travel to Bombay from LHR about 10 days ago. Those UK Goans wish to go to GOA for long duration it would be a bargain say just £89 one way. Again, should you wish to come back after say 5 months, then why not used Charter flights mid Oct? All you have to do is buy another from GOA say £99 or less for your return sector to London. Alternately, can come back by scheduled flight from Bombay. Fare would be at least £300 (including Goa/Bom). Those of you wish to take one way in April ex Lon, the cheapest ones would be on the last flts going out on 28th April (29th April if there is one) 30th April. Well, we too have to pay about Rs.47,000 if we travel with scheduled flights like AI/BA/EK/GF etc on LON-BOM-GOI-BOM-LON sector including Rs.2500 Bombay hotel stay. But one can travel cheap with other cheaper airlines like Syrian, Aeroflot etc for say around Rs.40,000 (cheapest being 38,000). WE are lucky to have Charter Services (usually Oct-April) where we can travel and we are now travelling within the fare range Rs.28,000 to just Rs.16,000 thus saving of up to Rs.31,000 compared to abv AI/EK/BA etc And what more? Flight direct almost to your door step (Goa), save two days which one would lose if traveling via BOM i.e. stay at hotel BOM for your Goa Connection flt and leaving a day earlier from Goa to catch your next day flt at BOM. We UK Goans also lucky to make cheap phone calls to Goa/India (home or mobile) just Rs.4 per minute Also, we are lucky to have all Indian food products (vegetables, spices, fruits incluing jackfruits/mangoes, coconuts etc some times lot cheaper than GOA)Most such shops are located almost at our door steps. But the same flt/date/duration was available for £249 just after 8hrs of booking and 2 days later, the same was £199. What a 'JELAD PICASAO' (pikasaum) !!! I am sure most of our UK members faced the same situation too. I am sorry, my main intention was to offer the cheapest and I did my best and still doing... I remember, back in early August this year, the cheapest one was £349 for Nov. travel but whole of Sept Oct there was nothing like this price as cheapest remain steady around £389 (including £15 fuel surcharge eff. Nov). Now where is £349 and £199? some lost £150, Some lost £100, some £50 but I lost £120. Its like gambling, some are lucky and saome are not. How Cheapest it was in the past? Well, I have been using this Charter flights for last 10 years. Cheapest I traveled was £139 one week about 6 years ago, which was booked a week in advance and was with hotel, bed breakfast, transfer and return ticket but we never used transfer hotel. However, it can be as cheap as just £99 for a week (just about Rs.8000 only) again with hotel etc for these types of deals one shoud be able to leave home within 24hrs or less i.e. same day travelling. Ideal for retireds, jobless etc. The Cheapest fare available in this catagory was £79 1week (just about Rs6000)again with hotel etc this was 2 years ago. Finally, it appears that most of the UK members have bought their tickets already. It seems there were no takers for £199 recently posted (from our members circle) So, its time for me to slow down? How would I know ?? However, tourist/Pax in GOA were lucky to have one free additional holiday. Flt only pax may have come to the airport and gone back home as they are not likely to be notified about the cancellation/delays etc in absence of any contact details. Also, see a letter from a PAX to Excel Airways at the bottom.. Other Tips: Just before u leave your Goa home, it is advisable to phone either the Holiday company or Dabolim Airport about the flt status. If you are required to reconfirm your return journey, please make sure you leave your contact No. too. Those travelling on Monarch etc which departs around midnight at London, their return flt also likely to arrive back in london after midnight. No coaches/buses to LHR etc (e.g.national express) are available after 1130pm at the airport. However, there is a prepaid cab service at LGW just before u leave the terminal. If you normally pay to your local minicab say £45 the prepaid service will charge about £70 fixed day night. But if you tell your local minicab people in adv. that u r arriving at odd hours on so and so date, they may be able to come to pick you up but not all are willing to come at night and the excuse that they might give is 'shortage of staff'. If Travelling by First Choice/Air2000, they always depart from North Terminal LGW where as all others depart from the South Terminal. This info is not always printed on the ticket and rememeber, u may have to collect your ticket from the airport itself on the day of travelling. Remember, Firt Choice/air2000 very strict with the baggage allowance. They will charge you for the excess even if your baggage weight is just 25. It happened to me twice. Once I was travelling in Premium Class where bag.allow. is 30kgs but my wt was just 34kg I had to pay for 4 kgs @ £8/kg, however, very few get aways with even 30 kgs in Ecy. Your baggage weight (each suitcase) must be strictly Max.32kgs only. Even if your suitcase weigh 34kgs, you will be asked to remove the excess 2. This is a requirement at all UK airports. Handbag: After the check-in and passport control etc, dont be under the impression that you can load as much duty Free into your hand bag. Just before boarding the aircraft, all handbags are subject to check/weigh once again and you may be ask to leave your handbag into to hold with or without excess baggage payment. Finally, when you come back, avoid bringing heavy goans items like Miskut/Pickle/cashew nuts or Papad you get better quality here and cheaper too. Now, Sausages, dont bring in thousands. Always bear in mind that if your suitcase is opened upon arrival at customs, all your sausages will be taken away. I lost all my 2000 sausages about 5 years ago. Sausages or any other meat products from non-European countries are not allowed into UK That's all for 2day. Should you encounter any problems etc please dont forget to share with us. I would like to comment as follows: 1. Outbound (15/10/04) - XLA350 ex LGW No blankets were provided to Ecy. passengers. I could see several PAX requesting for blankets but were denied saying 'blankets only meant for children' It would be nice if blankets were provided to all pax bearing in mind 9/10 hours of long haul Flt to GOA. Not all pax are used to the controlled onboard temperature. 2. Inbound (23/10/04) - XLA351 ex GOA. As adivised, 3 days before the dep. date, it was reconfirmed over the phone and i was told to be at the airport atleast 3 hrs before the Dep. time. When arrived at the airport at 7.15, (ETD 1015) I was told that the flt was delayed by at least 7 hrs. Had to go back to Panaji (1 hr drive). If my contact no. was taken at the time of re-confirmation, they could at least informed me about the delay etc... 3. FOOD Food was good. 4. Baggage Allowance: 35kgs This was excellent and deserve max. credit. 5. Crew. Crew was very polite and helpfull. Hope my time/comments would bring about some changes to the satisfaction/convenience of the air Passengers travelling with XLA I am looking forward to travel to GOA again with Excel Airways... My Advice: Carry yours mobiles in your trousers pockets and not in your suitcase or hand bag.
