this morning and is presently sinking. Understand that two crew members
died of injuries and rescue operations in full swing. I am not aware if
there were any goans but will come with an update.

Several times she was

CECIL !

DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO DONATH'S MOBILE PHONE ???
I BELIEVE ITS GLASS FRAMED AND ON DISPLAY IN THE NOKIA'S

In the days that went by - Ganpat was arrested by the Portuguese Police and
sentenced to life for being seen kissing the statue of Donath in public and
his phone was confiscated by the then local mobile service provider for non-
payment of his bills.

Ganpat later died a very distraught man - but still gay !

While going through JoeGoaUk' typical Goan curses I found that those
directed towards females tended towards their marital and maternal status.

 May you never get married.
 May you remain a spinster.
 May you be always barren.
 May you never have children.
 etc.

Isn't it a reflection of our society that a woman is considered 'complete'
only after she is married and has given birth to children? Whereas a man
can remain a bachelor forever and have no stigma attached to this.

 Shame on us all!

Re: [Goanet]Casting Agency in Goa? Vouched for Couch for Sale.

2005-04-08 Thread Vincent Andrade

Please inform Jason that last month I was about to launch my Casting
Agency
for amateur actresses interested in getting a foot into the booming
 Videofilming-of-Tiatrs and Low-Budget-Konkani-Movies scene. I had rented
an
office. Purchased a couch. Placed classified adverts. Fixed up
appointments
 with actress wannabes and

Response : Like Jason make it a NO-Budget-Konkani-Movie so no one expects
any remuneration. Everyone who acts gets a Bouquet of Fresh
Flowers
 Delivered in an Air-Conditioned Car.

at least, that dastardly Shakti Kapoor had to go and get caught on camera
and give the whole casting industry a big name.

Response : Shakti Kapoor now calls it a Casting OUCH !!.

When the dust settles I might give it another go.

Response : It has been proved that dust settles down if water is sprayed
over it.

Vince
PS. If I ever try my hand at starting a casting Agency I am sure to name it
Casting Couch Agency so that no young Star aspirants can blame me for
misleading them into believing that the Casting Couch doesnt exist.

TWO CORRECTIONS :

1. IT WAS POPE PAUL VI AND NOT POPE JOHN PAUL VI.
2. OVAL MAIDAN IN BOMBAY (NOW MUMBAI)

AS A CHILD I ALSO HEARD OF A STORY ABOUT A PHOTOGRAPHER WH0

Correction :
M/V Maritime Wisdom is a 73,657 MT Bulk Carrier - not a Barge as mentioned.
while Prapati is a small barge which was carrying Iron Ore from the Mines
Jetty to
Aguada Anchorage for loading into the M/V Maritime Wisdom. Apparently due to
adverse weather the Barge which was alongside the Ship - collided with it
causing
a hole in the Ship's Side and oil spilling out.

Huge oil spilled as two cargo vessels collided in Goa

 PANAJI, (UNI)

In a major environmental catastrophe, about 110 tonnes of oil spilled into
Mandovi river when two cargo barges collided four nautical miles off the
Goa
 coast late last night.

Captain of the ports A P Mascarehas said on Wednesday that cargo vessel
Prapati, owned by Atraya Shipping Private Ltd, came in contact with
Singapore-
based barge, Maritime Wisdom, at around 0110 hours last night off the
Agauda.
Both the vessels were transporting iron ore.

In the collision, the fuel tank of the Singapore based vessel was damaged
and
about 110 tonnes of oil was spilled.

Marmugao Port Trust (MPT) immediately swung into action and precautionary
measures have been taken. The coast guard has also been alerted, he said.

The situation is under control and no causality has been reported so far,
Mr
 Mascarehas added.

Indian boy tops Nasa examination
By Sutapa Mukerjee
BBC News, Ballia, Uttar Pradesh

Saurabh came top of 200,000 students worldwide
A 17-year-old boy from an obscure village in northern India's Uttar Pradesh
state has topped an international exam run by Nasa.
Saurabh Singh beat 200,000 students worldwide to top the prestigious
International Scientist Discovery exam conducted by the National
Aeronautical and Space Administration.
The other two Indians who passed the exam are President APJ Kalam and the
late Nasa astronaut, Kalpana Chawla.
President Kalam was seventh in 1960 and Chawla 21st in 1988.
Dingy study
Now politicians, administrators, social workers and teachers are all vying
to fete the boy from Ballia district.
All this attention is so funny, says reticent Saurabh.

His study is a dingy corner in a dilapidated house
Saurabh's feat is all the more impressive because he hails from a backward
district, with few passable roads and irregular electricity, in one of
India's poorest states.
His father is a teacher while his mother is a health worker with the local
government.
His study is a dingy, poorly-lit corner in a dilapidated house in obscure
Narhi village, 55km (35 miles) from Ballia town.
After scoring 72% in his school leaving exam, Saurabh left for Rajasthan
state to prepare for his engineering school papers.
He read about the Nasa examination in a newspaper and decided to take it.
I had never even heard of Nasa before I saw the newspaper advertisement. I
realised I was familiar with the subjects as they were part of my school
syllabuses. So I decided to take a chance, says Saurabh.
Grit and determination
He says he studied up to 18 hours a day preparing for one of the world's
toughest exams.

Father Ram Keshwar Singh and son attend many ceremonies
He was put on a 100-strong shortlist to appear for the final papers.
When the results came in, the reticent young boy from Ballia had excelled in
all five subjects - scoring A++ in four and A+ in one.
Saurabh has now met President Kalam and cannot wait to go to Nasa.
After reaching Nasa there will be no looking back for me. I will devote all
my time to science and would love to return to India and work for my
country, he says.
For the moment, his father takes him from one ceremony to another in Uttar
Pradesh.
Everyone wants him to celebrate his success, says Ram Keshwar Singh.
Even the state's legislators have decided to donate a part of their wages
this month to set up a prize fund for Saurabh.
Saurabh's recipe for success is simple - Where there's a will, there's a
way, he says.
Of course, honesty and determination should never be lacking.

A Good Day to You.
Thanks Best Regards
Jyotiba Patil

[Goanet]Goa Netters meeting on 21/December

2004-12-23 Thread Vincent Andrade
Good Day Everyone !

As all of you are aware some of us netters met up at Club Vasco de Gama
yesterday (21st Dec) at Ernesto's (Run by Ernesto s/o the Great Late Roberto
Alvares - my good friend who I used to meet up mostly at the Red n Black
dance at Panjim - I understand that now he is the King Momo at the Carnival
Parades in Heaven).

It was a beautiful afternoon with about 20 of us meeting up (didnt count the
exact number) and putting a face to the picture of persons we had made up
only in our minds.

Following are the few goa netters that i met up with :

Frederick Noronha - Ever Smiling 'Fred' was the quiet 'Master of Ceremonies'
and introduced everyone to everyone. He did not seem to be the 'biased'
moderator that I thought he was. A very down to earth man smiling always.
Fred as to your question about why I am not on the Catholics Mailing List -
will reply some other time.

Cecil Pinto - The guy who wanted to advertise his 'florist' business on
goacom. Very Jovial Character who missed Aires () so much at the meet-up
(pl read Fred's post this morning about Cecil's calls to Aires). Eddie
Verdes of SA - if you are reading this - I met up with Cecil first time.

Tony Correia Afonso - The 'Big Shot' from Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd that I
knew of as a student of MES College was there with his wife Marina. He used
to be the Chief Guest at our college functions on several occassions.

Silviano Barboza - 'Babush' as we know him is also a regular Chatter on
Goacom chat. A very unassuming man - talented that he is. He released his
book The Sixth Night at the meet-up and was kind enough to autograph a
complementary copy for me in exchange of which I have promised him a couple
of CDs of Mangalorean Konkani Hits. Babush and me goa long way and have
interacted a lot on goanet as well as on chat and it was a great pleasure
meeting him in person. Babush is a great lover of Konkani Music and has also
produced a konkani music album called Classic Goa (if i got the name
right) which also included songs sung by Lorna.

Vivek Menezes - aka VM was there too - a lookalike of Sabeer Bhatia (the
Hotmail guy). VM is a Hot Male too. He declined to be photographed - dunno
why !

Desmond Nazareth - Originally from Mangalore - he is into film making and
told me he makes documentaries and films (not the commercial bollywood
ones). Quiet guy with a half Sai Baba hairdo.

Melinda Powell - We all thought she was married to an Englishman (Lord Baden
Powell) or an American (Colin Powell) - actually she is married to a south
indian who is a Master Mariner and presently sailing with a Hong Kong based
Company. I have a special affinity for anyone who is in the same business as
me (Shipping). I expected Melinda to be this snooty, pouting woman (she is
an ex-Air India Air Hostess and Air Hostesses always have had a bit of head
weight) - but she turned out to be just the opposite - sweet, smiling and
gentle. Good going Melinda.

Bosco - Goanet Volunteer remembered exchanging mails with me and was there
with his writing pad taking down the names of all those who had turned up.

Daniel De Souza - He is from Vasco and I was meeting him for the first time
though he is a vasco-car like me. Daniel happened to travel back to vasco
with me after the meet-up and we had the opportunity to discuss issues
pertaining to Goacom on our drive back.

Joel D'Souza - the guy who sends us all the news clippings was accompanied
by his son. Joel is the quiet behind the scenes man who was busy clicking
all the action on his digital camera. I am sure he will have some of the
pics circulated soon. Keep up all the good work Joel and thanks for your
daily clippings.

I also met up with Vivian D'Souza, Mario fernandes, Mario Dias, Margaret
Mascarenhas, Brian Pinto, Floriano Lobo - those are the names I can
recollect and many others too.

Though I expected more members to show up - It was all in all a very nice
afternoon and well worth the 7 + 7 hours drive from Mangalore and Back.

Thanks once again to everyone who made a difference at Ernesto's.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year in advance.

With Warm Wishes,
Vincent Andrade

Once again we see Mr Aires Rodrigues using this forum to put forth his news
reports (thats what it looks like). Check out the begining and abrupt ending
of his post. Why did this post
get passed by the moderators. We know the whole story so there is no need
for the same to be repeated time and again. Besides that we also read
newspapers and Joel's News - so where is the need for Mr Aires Rodrigues to
post such repeats here ? The more he writes - the more convinced i am that
his intention is not to inform the readers about the case - but just to
malign someone's name. Dont stoop so low Mr Rodrigues - you are making a
fool of your ownself by using this forum for your vested interests.

I fail to understand how the following post of Mr Aires Rodrigues was
allowed to be published by the moderators. Did they find this appropriate
or are you guys being selective in releasing posts. Mr Aires Rodrigues is
making a direct attack on Fr Newton- Yes or No . Fr Newton is 'innocent
until proved guilty' and Mr Aires being a Lawyer must know this too well.

If someone has launched a website in the name of Mr Aires - he can in turn
do the same - but allowing him to wash dirty linen here is not acceptable. I
am not questioning Mr Aires' background or his crusade against unlawful acts -
but this is not the forum for him to clear his name.

Whatever has happened in Ribandar is a legal case and we must allow the law
to take its course. No matter how much Mr Aires and Fr Newton - directly or
through proxies - try to post explanations - we wont be convinced until the
matter is thoroughly investigated by the Police.

I am of the opinion that the moderators must close any further posts on the
Ribandar episode. Too much has been said by both sides - and this could also
be treated as hampering investigations. So please put an end to this. If
anyone wants to follow the case they can do so through daily newspapers.
And we have heard too many of those statements about what if that girl was

WHAT IF YOUR MOTHER WAS LORENA BOBITT ?

 Candice Ezekwe wrote:

 'What exactly does goenchimanna mean?'

 -

 Dear Candice,

How coincidental that you ask this question on the eve of Maundy Thursday
which, in the Christian calender, is the day the newspapers are full of
advertisements by bakeries for Hot Cross Buns.

'Manna' as we all know is from the Bible. The Israelites were hungry on
their flight to Egypt. It was a non-stop no-frills charter flight. What
can
you expect from Jews? So many centuries later, the Israelis still come to
Anjuna the same way. Anyway they prayed to God and he showered upon them
insta-vitamin tablets that they consumed. He then showered upon them
tablets with rules written on them, which they accepted but ignored.
Finally he showered upon them 'kadyo-bodyo' and 'manna'. 'Kadyo-bodyo' are
made from pure sugar and cause diabetes, cavities, high blood pressure and
tongue discoloration. 'Manna' is slices of the tapioca root deep fried. It
is tasteless. If you really want to taste friend root, eat potato chips or
try 'capam' that are available with roadside 'boje' sellers. Keep in mind
'boje' or 'bhoje' or 'bhojin' is Goan. 'Bhajias' are non-Goan and consists
of only onions in a batter - which also is a root.

 Coming to your question

Goenchin is a Chinese restaurant in Panjim. It is owned by the Kenis. The
same family that owns Hotel Mandovi, A Pasteleria, Keni's Hotel, Keni's
Petrol Pump and Keni Rogers. In 1943 when Hotel Mandovi was being built
the
architect was an American Jew named Ismail Knofler from a town named Havin
in Texas. Now this Ismail was known to be quite a character. You can call
me Ismail he used to roar after drinking at a local bar named 'Mitzvah'.
He was also an excellent cook.

After Hotel Mandovi was built Ismail was given charge of the restaurant.
He
introduced a dish named 'Manna from Havin' which was a hot spicy dish with
tapioca as the base (according to local rumours Eric Clapton attempted
this
dish and was inspired to tears in Havin). All other dishes at the
restaurant were quite acceptable but not this particular dish. One day the
Kenis called for a meeting with Ismail. Ismail said Gajja Keni, the head
of the family, we would like you to build us a Chinese Restaurant.
 Hokay! said Ismail.

So Goenchin was built and the Ismail tried fobbing off his 'Manna from
Havin dish on unsuspecting customers. Slowly the news spread and everyone
knew that it was a dish best avoided. They started calling it
'Goenchimanna in hushed whispers, specially when children were around.
That's how the phrase 'goenchimanna' came into existence. It is a word
used
to discretely say something is distasteful. Eg. Lawrence goes on and on
about his goenchimanna book that has more reviewers than buyers!

Since then 'manna' has been celebrated in song, dance and movies. Just
recently there was a a Sanjay Dutt starrer named Manna Bhai MBBS. We
also
have the Hollywood comedy 'Throw Manna from the Train. There is a a
popular TV serial named Manna ya na manna. Our very own Remo composed a
 hit song O Meri Manna.

 Cdez - a nice week!
 We zen iced cake!

Which are both anagrams for Candice Ezekwe

 Cheers!

 Cecil

why dont these guys stop over in bangkok for recreation. why come to goa?
the only reason is - that we are all very sympathetic to anyone and these

that the whole beach was full of british sailors - almost all of them drunk,
abusive, some without their shirts and pants, some relieving themselves on
the beach - shamefull sight - and they all got away with it. do all this in

do we need guests like these..

Besides, the US in its military and foreign policy is so much in bed
with Pakistan ... why not they stop over in Pakistan for RR with their
lover country which they are so much deeply in love with.

In the current US budget, from George W. Bush, he has alloted USD 300 mil
to Pakistan for development progroms ... and just USD 15 mil to India !
When you consider the size and population ratio of India::Pakistan, one
would expect a reverse allotment in the budget... that of course assuming
that the US had a certain neutrality in its foreign policy, which
obviously is not. So with this skewed US foreign policy, such RR
stops in India by the US military have to be put under the scan of
a microscope to uncover hidden agendas.

 Hi all,

My name is Melinda Powell,I am a goan born and brought up in Bombay. My

a
healthy environment to raise kids,(we have twin girls -7 yrs old)also we
found
 Bombay getting to mechanical.

I used to work as an airhostess for 15 years, and I loved my job.I'm now
doing
something very different,I run an exclusive playschool(I take only 10

 South Goa.

While I think Goa is a great place,I am concerned about issues that affect
our

I came across this web site, when i was researching for my M.A.,I found a
very
interesting article on the importance of the English language by Frederick
Noronha thanks Frederick, your article did help me.

Bye,I hope to make friends with like minded people.

What are the 'other items' on offer?
Says she, I offer you my honour
Says he, I honour your offer
 and so it goes...honour ,offer...honour,offer...

 Let's have the offer.
