   KONKANI SKIT

I am organising a cultural function for World Goa Day
and would like to have a small Konkani Skit. I would
be happy if you could suggest someone who could send
me the skit (konkani/English) if possible. I am
also organising some of the Goan folk dances and we
hope that it will be a great day.

Thanks in anticipation.

[Goanet] Vote for your favourite teacher FOR the Merlyn Vaz SCHOLARSHIP

2006-04-21 Thread r.barreto

Press release

Vote for your favourite teacher
   FOR the Merlyn Vaz SCHOLARSHIP

Teachers from all over Goa applied for the scholarship in memory of Merlyn Vaz
and three candidates have been short listed. The scholarship recognises
Merlyn’s
exemplary service as an inspirational teacher and leader. Merlyn’s son, the
longest
serving British Asian MP Keith Vaz has launched the scholarship and will award
a teacher the chance of a lifetime.

The scholarship endorsed by the Chief Minister Pratab Singh Rane MP and
Tourism Minister Wilfred de Souza is worth around £2,500 and the winner will
get the opportunity to teach at Sacred Heart Primary School, during the spring
term 2007, accommodation and the cost of food and travel expenses. She will
also go on a sight-seeing tour of Britain.

Goans are invited to ask questions to the three candidates attached to help
find the winner of the Merlyn Vaz Scholarship. An independent panel of three
judges will oversee the competition and select the overall winner.
To ask a question please email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Keith Vaz MP said “"We have had three short-listed candidates and I have met
them all. They are all dedicated and ambitious women.

"We want members of the public to ask them questions and to vote for them,
like a "teacher idol". We also want to make an exchange, with a teacher from
Leicester going to Goa at the same time."

Gerry Hirst, head teacher of Sacred Heart, said: "We have a lot of children
in our school who come from India, and having a teacher from India in
school could help us understand better how to connect with the children
when they come here. "We will also be able to share ideas and experiences.
They will help us and we will help them. It is a good idea."

[Goanet] The Knowledge Commission - GOA

2006-02-02 Thread r.barreto

It gives me great pleasure to share with you all
a post recd. from Professor Peter R. deSouza

rb

Dear Mr Barreto,

 has been recently constituted
by the Government of Goa to prepare a Vision Document
on education in Goa.

Education has long since been a topic for hot debate
and quite a few of us have found ourselves mulling
over questions like, why are so many thousands of
Goans unemployed or under-employed? Why do Goan lag
behind in competitive exams?

Why can't education in Goa be more job oriented? Why
does Goa have so few opportunities such that all our
bright students leave the state for foreign shores?
etc. Quite a few of us have our own personal analysis
and some answers too!

The Goa Knowledge Commission hopes to take a critical
look at education for its employment generating
capacity. It wants to do this not without enlisting
your thoughts, opinions, suggestions and ideas.

For this it has set up a website

www.knowledgeforgoa.com

We know that you have often wished that policy
formulators have a more democratic approach. We know
you have often wished for a forum to express your
thoughts. Here is your chance. Visit the bulletin
board of the Knowledge Commission and post your
inputs. We assure you your thoughts matter.

We would also appreciate it if you can forward this
mail to the Goa Day list serve and like minded friends
and urge them to visit the site and post their
comments too

With warm regards

Peter R.deSouza

Dear Goanexpats

I love my Goa and let us all together make Goa a
symbol of excellence in our India.

It is with great honor that I accept the nomination to
represent all of you, and would do my best to get the
job well done.

Serving you is serving Goa for today and for tomorrow.

I’m happy in Goa and today I tell all Goansexpats that
being back in Goa is feeling home with mother.

As we agreed at the end of meeting in Kala Akademi on
4th January, 2006 we will meet on Saturday, 7th
January, 2006 at 11:00 am at Kala Akademy.

Please come on time for the meeting and inform other
Goanexpats that might not received this email.

It seams to me that we should meet every Saturday for
the next 4 Saturdays so we can discuss urgent needs to
form a strong action group and voice for Goa.

In the past we listen the Government of Goa and
nothing was accomplished, now is our turn to setup a
strong voice with result-oriented achievements for a
prosperous Goa.

Today we will use the technology to make our dreams
come true.

I will put together the agenda for the coming meeting.

I wish all of you a prosperous new year.

Yours

Manuel Caldeira

Mario, Muriel bag Malvina Athaide Award

BY HERALD REPORTER

PANJIM, DEC 18 - Mario Mascarenhas and Muriel D’Souza
from Saligao have bagged the ‘Malvina Athaide Award’
for their outstanding efforts in advocacy for social
justice in Goa.

The award was given away by Malvina’s sister on the
first day of the Goa State Consultation on
‘Trafficking in Women & Children’ held at the Caritas
Holiday Home in St Inez on Saturday. It was instituted
by Malvina’s husband, Dileep Athaide, after her death
in Vancouver, Canada, on September 25, 2004.
Malvina, originally from Saligao in Bardez, before
settling abroad, was at the forefront in her work with
the underprivileged and marginalized in the villages
of Pernem taluka in North Goa. She and her group also
worked with hutment dwellers in Porvorim educating
them about their basic rights.
It was during this time that she met Dileep, whom she
married in 1984 and left for Canada. But even from
there she never lost sight of her fight for social
justice in Goa. Dileep said it was his wish to create
an award that would honour Malvina’s memory by
recognizing the work of individuals or organisations
involved in social justice.
