Dear all,
Why this contest, many ask. Why this theme "What I can do for Goa"?
I have been the coordinator of World Goa Day in Portugal for some years now, since 2001. And what I have seen most is that the Goan youth is so many times forgotten. A community, our Goan communities abroad, can only survive if there is a bond linking all generations - old and young - to Goa itself. In the end, we call ourselves Goans (even if on a "part-time" basis) because something attracts us to that tiny piece of coastal land somewhere in Asia.
So, there arises the need for us to re-engage ourselves with Goa. We can do it by promoting our tradition, our culture, our language etc. abroad, in the countries we live in. But we can do it also - and we should do so - by keeping strong links with Goa. And it is up to the younger generations who are born abroad or have only little knowledge about Goa to find out new ways (or strengthen old ways) to build up this relationship.
Therefore, by inviting our global youth to think about how THEY can do something for Goa is the way we chose to give our contribute. With special support by the esteemed jury (Ben Antao, Ethel da Costa, Lino Leitao, Victor Rangel-Ribeiro and Wendell Rodricks, all donating great prizes) and the weekly Goan Observer who is going to publish the best four essays.
The contest was launched on World Goa Day 2005, not by coincidence: this is an important date for the Goan Diaspora worldwide, to pass the message that... we are proud to be Goans and want to be so ACTIVELY,
by giving something back to Goa.
A MESSAGE TO THE YOUTH: do not feel shy, do not think you have no idea about Goa, no sufficient knowledge or no original ideas. If you like to write and if you have some kind of interest in Goa, some idea, some thought, share it in an informal way, just let your fingers type freely what flows from your mind.
You observed the traditional Goan houses are falling apart?
You have an idea to promote Goa in your school, in your neighbourhood etc.?
You feel there should specific Goa tourism programmes for young peple like you?
You feel the flora and fauna of Goa is in danger?
You have ideas to organize original events in your local Goan association/club?
Something else which is related to Goa and where you would like to participate and share your views?
This is the moment to do so... Grab your creativity and start writing (see conditions below). And you could win great prizes (150 USD for the best essay) and see your text published in a Goan newspaper!

Constantino - one of our YOUNGEST members in our
WGD_ALLIANCE - has made a tremendous effort in bringing
the Younger Goans TOGETHER ...not only in Portugal - but
also around our GOANWORLD.
It is why , I feel very saddened that WE have failed to give him
the support he rightly deserved.
He needs OUR Participation not just our support ...
I am APPEALING to ALL the Presidents/ Chairpersons
- of the various GOAN ASSOCIATIONS / organizations to
GIVE him that support.
I am also appealing to the various Goan Editors /webmasters
