Peter Drucker In Memoriam
As a tribute to Peter Drucker the Father of Modern Management, the
Department of Commerce, St. Xavier's College, Mapusa, Goa, is organizing
a half day memorial programme on 15th December, 2005, at 11:15
a.m., in the College Hall.
Peter Ferdinand Drucker was born on November, 19th, 1909, in
Vienna, and was educated there and in England. He received a doctoral
degree in Public International Law at Frankfurt University in 1931. He
moved to London in 1934, where he worked as an economist for a bank. In
1937, he moved to the United States where, in the 40s, he became a
regular contributor to Harpers Magazine. He undertook his first project
for General Motors which later resulted in the publication of his
landmark book The Concept of the Corporation (1945).
He joined the faculty of New York University in 1950, as Professor of
Management and in 1960 received the Presidential Citation the Schools
highest honour. He began a 20 year tenure as monthly columnist for the
editorial page of Wall Street Journal. Beginning in 1971, he taught a
course for Mid-career Executive at Claremont Graduate School in
California which named its Business School after him. He maintained
active teaching and consultancy activities at Claremont throughout the
80s and taught there right upto, 2002. He is survived by his wife Doris,
four children and 6 grand children.
Among Druckers many honours include Business week title of Most
Enduring Management Thinking of our Times, Forbes Magazine which
featured him in 97 on its cover under the headline Still the Youngest
Mind and President George W. Bush awarding him the Presidential Medal of
Freedom in 2002.
The keynote address will be delivered by Fr. Romualdo DSouza, from Goa
Institute of Management Studies, Ribandar. The programme will consist of
presentation on Peter Druckers life, milestones in his career,
management concepts and theories put forward by him, tributes from world
leaders, industrialists and other renowned personalities. It will end
with a panel discussion conducted by Mr. M.A. Sundaram and Fr. Romualdo
DSouza.
