Mario observes: Mervyn is referring above to the Queeen of England, who is the Canadian Head-of-State. Mervyn is being disrespectful in calling her a clown. The fact is that she cannot impose herself on Canada. Canada has chosen her as Canadian Head-of-State. Only she and her heirs can assume this highest office in Canada. No Canadian, either immigrant or native born, can aspire to this position. Mervyn writes: Click on: http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx?time=24 Thank you for the above graph pointing out that the price of petrol went up 27% in Canada and 54% in the US during the two year period. Mario observes: Readers can click on the website above and see that gasoline prices in Canada are consistently well above prices in the US. Mervyn writes: The President of Venezuela won an election that Jimmy Carter endorsed as being free and fair. Mario responds: Since his election the President of Venezuela has changed the Venezuelan constitution to make himself a virtual socialist dictator. He is currently being ridiculed across Europe for espousing socialism, which most of the Europeans are desperately trying to get away from. Like other oil-rich countries, most of Venezuela's revenues come from oil. Mervyn writes: The President and Vice-President of the US are oil men. That's the sector they will return to when they are out of public office. By coincidence, their financial portfolios are concentrated in this sector and the portfolios are doing extremely well.. Mario responds: The primary demand for oil that is driving up prices is coming from the vibrant economic growth taking place in China, India and the US itself. On the other hand supplies are being stifled by extreme environmental concerns and politics. In the US no oil refinery has been allowed to be built since 1976 and no new oil drilling is being allowed in and around the continental US due to environmental challenges. In the meantime Canada drills in it's part of the Great Lakes and Mexico in it's part of the Gulf of Mexico. So much for the President and Vice President of the US having any control as oil men. Anyone familiar with the US system of government, which obviously excludes Mervyn, knows that the office of US President is just ONE of THREE co-equal branches of the US government with the Legislature and the Judiciary. Regardless of their professional backgrounds they have no impact on what prices are charged in the marketplace by private companies. Mervyn's comments about their personal financial portfolios is false, since, by law, these have all been placed in blind trusts and are being managed at arms-length by independent trustees. Mervyn writes: Lastly, thank you for pointing out that Hugo Chavez uses all the tapping's of his office to keep the price of oil down. Mario responds: This is a false statement. While CITGO gave some limited discounts to a very limited segment of the market for a very limited time for political purposes, the prices it charges for oil and gasoline across America are similar to all it's competitors. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. What you are referrinng to is pseudo contemporary revisionist usage which is working hard to make American globalised capitalism palatable to a highly skeptical, but informed and knowledgeable world audience. Similarly classic liberalism is about as far removed from modern political liberalism as one can get. _ Do not post admin requests to the list.
