Women greet councillor with slaps, slippers
----------------------------------------------------------
When Curchorem councillor Abhay Khandekar went to stop
ore transportation activities at Curchorem on Friday, he was
greeted by women folk with slaps and slippers. Police has
arrested three persons in this connection.

According to Curchorem police, trouble broke out when
Mr Khandekar along with ex-councillor Sudhakar Naik and others
tried to stop the transportation of mineral ore near the old ITI at
Khamamol.

Later, Mr Khandekar went alone to the jetty of a mining company
at Xirfod to stop the ore transportation, when a group of women
confronted him and assaulted him with slaps and slippers.

Curchorem police rushed to the spot and rescued Mr Khandekar
from the mob. Quepem mamlatdar Mr Shetkar also visited the
Curchorem police station to take stock of the matter.

Though there were counter complaints of assaults by Mr Khandekar
and Shabuli J Naik, police arrested three persons from one group.
This angered the group, who alleged that the police had acted under
political pressure as councillor Khandekar is considered to be a
close aide of Curchorem MLA Ramrao Dessai.

However, Curchorem PI Gurudas Kadam told Herald that appropriate
action will also be initiated against Mr Khandekar for trying to take law
in his hands.

The police inspector added that Mr Khandekar had obtained signatures
and thumb impressions of some people from his ward, as part of a
memorandum to oppose dust pollution. However, some people claimed
that they had been misled by Mr Khandekar, as they were unaware
that the memorandum would oppose ore transportation.

They informed the police inspector that their livelihood depended on
mining activities in the area and insisted that they could not oppose
such activities in and around Curchorem.

According to sources, Mr Khandekar had allegedly demanded
Rs 50 lakh from mining companies and contractors to construct
a garden and a gymnasium at Xirfod-Bagwada area. As there was
no response from the mining companes and contractors,
Mr Khandekar attempted to block ore transportation,
the sources added.
