Who says caste system does not exist in India?
It exists in GOA too.
Lets talk about the Goan Church first.
In the eyes of God law, all men/citizens are equal but in the eyes of some
churches, some people like Gaumkars, Bamonns or Chaddi are more equal than
others?
Above caste people dominate all church committees, Confraria, Fabrique,
Communidades
etc. They even have/had their own Red colour 'offmouse' 'irmaos'? to
differentiate
from others caste.
What more? In many Goan churches, only Gaumkars are allowed to take out or
carry
the life size statue(casket) of dead Jesus Christ on Good Fridays. IF THEY
(GAUMCARS) ARE NOT ALLOWED THEN NOBODY ELSE SHOULD -so no procession on Good
Fridays. The poor life size Statue of Jesus lies there in the dark/closed
(beneath
the alter) for 365 days a year.
I am also given to understand that the popular 3 kings Feast at Cansaulim
(Jan.6) is
only celebrated by the Gauncars (no one else is allowed, no matter how much
money u
have). 3 Reis (kings) coming from 3 wards and it got to be Gaumkars.
Who are the church fabric or comfraria presidents? Again, its got to be the
Gaumcars.
Hav'nt we heard enough? 'Igorz konnem nagoili?' or 'Igorz chorun konnen kaili?'
Parish priests come and go but the so called age old caste system still
remained un
tackled.
When this will be changed?? Who are the people who can change this?
Its true 'Padrinche sermao vhoniek nhuim'
Why not church clears up its own back yard first ?
Why not Church sort out this mess first?
'Pik bhorpur punn vauraddi todde'
Yet our church find plenty of time to involve in politics and others not
related to
church.
Caste system even exist amongst the priests themselves ( I know for fact, I have
about 25 years of first hand experience with the church).
