LORNA TO PERFORM IN CUNCOLIM ON MAY 7, 2005
after a 3 decade gap !

- by Armstrong Vaz

Lorna, the singer has all along struck a special chord with her audience
wherever she has performed. A relationship, which dates back to almost four
decades. Lorna Cordeiro is a special breed of a singer who comes once in a
while. The old and the young all wait to hear and se her in flesh and blood
from close quarters.

The Mumbai-based Saligao born Konkani singer is back again in Goa for the
holiday season, specially flown in by the organizers, Cuncolim Union for
the Cuncolim Summer Nite to perform on May 7th , 2005.

Lorna spoke to Armstrong Vaz while traveling from Dabolim airport to her hotel
in Colva.

Twenty three years away from the public glare the nightingale of Konkani
singing made her first public appearance in 1995 for the food festival at
Miramar sending her fans into raptures. Simultaneously she also released her
cassette “Aikat Mojo Tavo” (listen to my voice). That was the end of the a
self imposed exile.

On asked to give a head count of the number of albums she has lended her voice
post-1995, she puts it at around 300 casettes. She is so much in demand and a
voice which sells for the small Konkani music loving people.

She has a hectic schedule with hordes of singers ever eager tp put her voice
on their cassettes. “A couple of people came to know that I am travelling to
Goa this week and having recorded a couple of songs in Mumbai, they now would
be Goa for recording another couple of songs, she disclosed.

Lorna the singer would not lend her voice for any song written by the music
director or lyrics writer. “I make sure I first read the lines of the song and
try to make whatever changes and suggestions in the way the song should be, to
make the song stand out” .

No one stand out against her experience and acumen, indeed she calls the
shots. Being a pupil and discovery of the legendery late Chris perry, the
pupil has learnt a few music composition tricks from the master musician
herself.

“No one can match Chris Perry, he was a class apart, his music compositions
are there for every one to hear , we were both made for each other on the
music field. Of all the musicians I have worked I have not come across a
musician better than him. Lorna states with nostalgic memories and with a
frown on her face which glows as she recalls her association with her
discoverer.

“I was basically a bar singer singing English numbers in the Mumbai hotles,
till Chris Perry came along and took me under his wings. I was unsure about
singing in Konkani and that too in Salcete accent as I was sued to the Bardez
accent of Konkani. Chris perry instilled all the confidence in me. I never
dreamt of reaching such dizzy heights and would not have never imagined that I
would be Konkani singer” she recalls in a emotionally choked voice.

Lorna has mesmired audiences with her melodious voices in Sorgar Rajan'n ( In
heaven), Calangute, Bebdo (drunkard), Lisbao, to name a few of her songs of
the 60's and 70's.

Ask her to list her favourite all time songs she says she is a deeply
emotional person and songs which take her closer to the audience and struck an
emotional chord with her audience are her favourite songs.

Recently back from tours of Portugal, England, Kuwait and Dubai, she was
deeply touched by the tremendous response she and her troupe got in
England. Initially we had planned to hold three shows but we had to perform
another two shows. All the shows were packed to capacity”.

“All of us, Ben Evanglisto, Norman Cardozo and Domnic have been invited again
to perform next year in England, besides invitation has also come in from
people in America for a performance in USA.

She also traveled to Portugal and was fortunate to play to a select audience
hand picked by the President of Portugal, for a party hosted by him. “It was
a dream come true for me, to travel to Portugal and sing in that country. I
was all the more fortunate to sing for the President. I started with my
song Lisboa and then we sang two Portuguese numbers.

I will travel to Dubai and Mangalore this month for shows in both the places,
she adds. Lorna who first shot into prominence as a church singer as a young
child opines that there are a lot of talented singers and musicians throughout
Goa . “We need someone to push them forward and provide them the opening.

The dream pairing of Lorna and ace singer late Alfred Rose did not come about.

Eugene Correia asks ; Are we still crazy to hear the frequent 'repackaging'
of Lorna?

I say YES
Being a fan since I first heard her in the late eighties, and having seeing
Lorna in concert recently in London, even though she only sang 5 or 6 songs
of which I only probably understand 1% (due to my Konkani being
non-existent) I still reckon we can do with some more from her. For some
reason, and I apologise to other women singers beforehand, no one else quite
matches up to her vocal deliveries. Keep recording Lorna and we will keep
listening.

warm regards

It's heartening to know that Lorna still regales Goan
crowds wherever she goes. I saw another new CD
released in Goa titled From Goa to Lisboa, which has
her old numbers.
I think there are at least two earlier cassettes/CDs,
I think, titled, Unforgetable Lorna, and Golden Hits,
by her. Besides, her songs have been sung by other
singers on cassettes and CDs.
Her voice may not be the same, but that she still
commands attention in a crowd field of women singers
in Goa speaks greatly in her honour.
Are we still crazy to hear the frequet 'repackaging'
of Lorna?

LORNA regales large crowd at KGTS' musical show
Konkani Machiek Noman in Kuwait
- By Welly Dias

Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvsta (KGTS) in association
with Goan Welfare Society (GWS) held its 2nd mega
musical show entiltled Konknni Machiek Nomann (A
Tribute to the Konkani Stage) at the Gulf English
School Auditorium on 4th February 2005.

The show commenced with a short introductory note by
Jose Rod, followed by a welcome speech by KGTS Vice
President Sylvester Vaz. Fr. Lionel Braganza SBD,
Principal of IEAS (Don Bosco) inauguranted the
traditional Photo Gallery of Yesteryears Dramatists in
fond rememberance of their good work to uphold the
image of the Tiatr (Drama) Art. Mrs. Elvira Mr.
Joseph D'Souza were the guests of honour for the show.

The opening theme chorus sung by Junnifer Rod-Cajetan
de Sanvordem-Sylvester Vaz was accompanied to the
music of Succor De Mello and his ensemble of 14
Kuwait-based young and talented musicians ably
supported by Goa's ace trumpeter Agnelo Dias who was
specially flown in a week earlier.
Jose Rod's prowess in presentation, direction,
composition and singing were to the fore as his touch
was visible during the presentation. Visiting Goan
artistes Comedian Domnic, John D'Silva, Luis Bachan,
Francis de Tuem, together Nelson Colaco, Mario de
Majorda, Jose Rod and others provided the humour
element which sent the audience into raptures of
laughter. KGTS' beneficiaries this year are the senior
retired Konknni stage artistes were announced.
Trumpeter Agnelo Dias and actress Sabina were
presented plaques. Rich tributes were paid to
M.Boyer's contribution to the Konkani stage. M.Boyer
is the only tiatrist to have been awarded the coveted
Padmashree Award this year.

The late saxophonist Juju was remembered and a one
minute silence was observed. His last recorded video
footage at KGTS's musical 'Tiatr Ani Tiatrists' was
screened.
The show was a success with some innovative
presentation concepts, large crowd attendance,
direction, singing, and more over being fruitful in
attaining the cherished dreams to support the retired
stage artistes back home in Goa and Mumbai.

KGTS members, contributors, artistes, musicians and
all are to be congratulated for the successful
presentation. A large delegation of reporters and
press photographers were present.

United Club of Utorda honoured T-Bush, the young
creative Goan film producer for his contribution to
the tiatr faternity over the years. T-Bush's short
English film The Letter directed by him and produced
by Panico, London (UK) by was also screened during the
show which has been awarded the coveted Inernational
European Short Film Student Award on 1/2/2005 .

A colourful souvenir was published to mark the
occasion and the highlights of it was the publication
of the page showing last years KGTS welfare
beneficiaries, namely Prem Kumar, Roam Tony, John
Nazareth, Paul Romy and the late Mary Vaz.

The evening's main draw was none other than Goa's
nightingale, LORNA. Her rendition of most of the
favourite oldies composed by the late Chris Perry with
her awesome vocals regaled the audience. Visiting
Menino Mario and Meena Leitao sang duets as well as
solo numbers. During the course of the show there
were solos, duos, trios, quartros and side shows which
the Kuwait based artistes as well as the visiting
artistes contributed.

Kuwait-based Konkani playback singer, Adolf, rendered
2-songs from the Konknni film Bhuierantlo Munis.
Adolf also lent his vocals to the Tsunami song
together with Jose Rod and Lorna, together with
visuals highlighting the disaster. In his message
published in the colourful souvenir, Bishop Francis
Micalef O.C.D., Vicar Apostolic of Kuwait emphasized
To keep alive and enhance the century old musicial
and theatrical heritage of the Konkani speaking Goan
ancestors giving it a deserved recognition in the
world of Arts.
Francis Lewis and Patrick Lewis of Fitwell Tailors
(Kuwait) sponsored the specially designed costume for
the musicians. The objectives of KGTS established in
2002 with a vision to promote Konkani language, tiatr
and to provide a platform for dynamic talented Konkani
artistes in Kuwait. Presently it is the only
association with a largest member base of the tiatr
faternity in the region.

Over 175 individual contributors and several Goan
associations supported the event and the organizers
thanked and appreciated their gratitude and love for
the Konkani stage artistes to keep the flag of the
'Tiatrists' flying high. The KGTS membership is open
