[Goanet]Problems with sancharnet.in (and/or hotmail) - Address Hijack ing
For the record, I have had several instances as well where my email address was hijacked and emails I never sent out getting returned to my mail box as "undelivered". Some crooks have recently sent me a barrage of emails in German with very similar headings from addresses purporting to be from UK (*.co.uk), India (*.com.in) etc. In fact, my old work email address was hijacked in one of these, as I received "undelivered" mail to addresses I have never sent. A couple of years ago, I was astonished to have received an automated warning from a Govt organisation stating that I had sent a virus in a message to an address I didn't know existed. A few months ago I received a very irate message from an antagonist in this forum stating that I had sent him a virus - I hadn't. Anybody know if there is a "cure" for this? Gabriel de Figueiredo. [Goanet]Problems with sancharnet.in (and/or hotmail)
There is nothing like bad publicity that summons the attention of service providers and politicians alike. Sancharnet.in (BSNL) will NOT act unless sufficiently large number of people write and force them to resolve this problem. Besides, GoaNet is an appropriate place to air/expose these issues, which receive wide publicity via the electronic media. I also suggest that the ISP subscribers and members of this community address/cc their complaints to the Sancharnet (BSNL) management in Goa. All emails I have sent today have bounced. Something to do with Conversion Failed. Also they say my emails contained a virus. Which they don't we sweep the computer about three times a day with the latest virus scanner I suspect their systems. If I am right we need a concerted effort to get another provider in Goa to give them some competition. Re: [Goanet]Problems with sancharnet.in (and/or hotmail) - Address Hijacking
Hi Gabe, Got a firewall, got an antivirus that is updated every week (Australia's own VET which has now been bought by CA) as well as eTrust PestPatrol. My issues probably occurred before I had the firewall in place, a few years ago, in fact. However, with so many memberships (ORACLE, Microsoft, DevX et al) that one subscribes to, when / after installing legitimate software, and adresses given when purchasing from Amazon and software retailers, as well as the fora, I wonder if the email addresses are on-sold to other companies, which are then on-sold in turn to other companies, etc. which gives rise to all the spam (Nigerian-style) plus the hijacking (i.e. impersonation). Funny enough, I have yet to receive any unsolicited email as yet at my personal business address which I have held since 2002 - this is because just half a dozen people know it, and it hasn't been supplied to any software company or used for any purchases. Cheers, Gabriel. --- Gabe Menezes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On 07/06/05, Gabe Menezes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > wrote: > > > RESPONSE: There are many programmes which are > initiated by hackers . > > For those that want a free virus P.C. but do not > want to pay for the > > likes of Norton, try AVG antivirus which can be > downloaded free with > > updates to boot. Hi all, The Virus e-mails and other 'junk' e-mail are a world wide phenmenon! They are auto machine generated by hackers and the like. These type of proliferating and self expanding e-mails have nothing to do with any other woes in relation with 'sancharnet'. A good up to date 'Anti-Virus' with auto matic updates is the need of the day; if one wants to protect one's PC from the devastating effects of viruses. There is no easy warding off other junk e-mails, though the same can be classified and then deleted. Like Gabe Menezes says: the AVG anti virus software is free, so far; but only free for 'home PC' users. These programmes self propogate and many times will continue to send out emails with a virus purporting to have been sent by you! For those that want a free virus P.C. but do not want to pay for the likes of Norton, try AVG antivirus which can be downloaded free with updates to boot. Use a search engine to locate them. Also recently, I received from Microsoft, a free anti spyware programme - seems pretty good too. Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London, England

I replied enquiring what email he was talking about and he apologized saying the following >>> "Sorry about the mail. May be someone played a prank. There was a message in my mail box. When I tried to open the attachment, my server flashed the following message. Scan result: Virus "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" found. The file attached to this message was infested with a virus that we were unable to clean. Note: Not all viruses can be cleaned. Please contact the message sender and request that they send a virus-free version of this attachment. Believing that the message was genuine and in order not to block a potential correspondent, I did not mark it as 'spam' and, instead, sent you the reply. Since the 'reply', which was sent to the original sender, reached you, it is obvious that some unscrupulous person is misusing your ID. Please beware. signed (a very Goan name)" The worst part was it came to me as reply to > > --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] !!! There has definitely been an upsurge in the number of junk mails this year. I didnt think much of it, just kept deleting it...Guess that the more people who have your email id, the more probablity of you receiving viruses and spam...as some viruses propagate through the address books. (And I use Norton Antivirus-2005, a firewall and an antispyware software on my laptop & computer) *~Jen Birmingham UK http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VascokarsUnited/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? [Goanet]Problems with sancharnet.in (and/or hotmail)
1. [David Futers, May 19] Recent mails from my hotmail address (which I use for goanet postings) to two sancharnet.in addresses (one a reply to an email from sancharnet.in and the other a test message to sancharnet.in) have bounced giving the reason "Possible Virus Detected unknown.text". However a test message to yahoo went through without a problem. 2. [David Futers, May 28] Again recently I got a returned mail message in my hotmail account informing me that a message (which I never sent!) to an ""ae" address (Arab Emirates?) had bounced. Anybody know what could be happening? Thanks. P.S. During April I saw a sudden upsurge of junk mails in my hotmail account which I invariably delete without opening. One of them was always the same size 73kb even though it seemed to have different origins each time. This has since subsided considerably though stray junk mails (of other sizes) still come in. The sancharnet.in mail to which I replied (above) was from a known person.
