Match Fixing in Goa The recent events surrounding "match-fixing" in Goa is utterly disgraceful to say the least, and comes at a time when Goa and India is working hard to develop its standing in international football. The whole thing made a mockery of good competitive sports and is one of the sickest of jokes. The culprits involved do need to be severely punished, in such a manner to send a clear signal that such behavior will not be tolerated. At the same time a number of innocent pawns have had to suffer. Many of the players of these teams, which are now banned for a year, were mere pawns being manipulated and forced to obey the orders of their bosses who conspired in this scheme of events. Some of these players face the grim prospects of their careers being hampered in the long run. Those that need to be severely penalized are the main culprits, the hench-men who organized the match-fixing. The innocent pawns, the players need to be let go with a slap on the wrist and be allowed to transfer to other teams. I have been a regular, watching the National Football League (NFL) matches being played at the Fatorda Stadium, and many a times have wondered about the matches being "fixed" due to some blatant playing behavior. Many of the strikers/forwards blasting wide of the goal with only the goalkeeper to beat, or shooting feebly directly into the hands of the goalkeeper. This is India’s premier national league, and at this level, such performance is really dismal. If it is not match-fixing, then the strikers must be real morons in terms of their football-playing IQ ! -- Brian Antao ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
