I think those who have started this chain letter on
the Exposition of the Body of St. Francis Xavier
didn't give themselves a second thought on attaching
the photos.
With all reverence to the saint, I think the Goa
church is making a big mistake in holding this
Exposition. On my last visit to Goa in March, I
discussed this issue with two priests who seemed not
very happy at this event.
In fact, they indirectly suggested that the media
should launch a campaign to halt it. I think they are
right. More than anything else, the Exposition has
been turned into a commercial venture the past few
times.
I remember many, many years ago discussing this issue
with the late Fr. Antonio Pereira and even before that
Fr. George who is in charge of the Bom Jesus Basilica.
I had gone to the church to pray and I saw the saint's
body from a distance. That was enough for me.
Now the photos have sort of disturbed me. I was
thinking of going to Goa for the Exposition but now I
think I would be happy praying from where I am. I have
attened the Exposition when I was very young. Maybe
that is enough.
I am told that the hotel lobby in collusion with the
government want to make a quick buck on the pilgrims,
or some who combine piligrimage with tourism. This
defeats the purpose of the Exposition.
It's more than a decade ago that I heard that the last
Exposition would be the final. I don't saying it was
final was a marketing ploy. If it was, St. Francis
should forgive those who joined hands to have the
Exposition. I may sound ridiculous, but the saint must
forgive the Goa Church and, by extension, the Pope.
I pray please do NOT further circulate this photos,
especially because young children may see them and may
not like what they see. I don't know best to express
myself, more so as I am written immediately after
seeing the photos.
Forgive me Saint Xavier for I have spoken from my
heart.
