RIBANDAR TO OPPOSE BAINA SEX WORKERS "The move by the Government of Goa to rehabilitate the Baina-based sex workers at Ribandar will be strongly opposed by the local residents, who are are already very concerned about the increasing crime on the Kadamba Plateau adjoining Ribandar. The Government's current move will only aggravate the residents' woes," stated Ribandar-based social activist Adv. Aires Rodrigues today. The residents of Ribandar would meet on Sunday, 13th June, to plan the future course of action to oppose the Government decision and to protect the peace and good image of Ribandar. Adv. Rodrigues said that nobody was against rehabilitation of sex workers but the decision of the Government to put the sex workers in the midst of a populated and upcoming place like Ribandar was unwarranted and this stand of the local residents would be explained to the Goa State Women's Commission, Bailancho Exvott, Bailancho Saad and other women organizations. Recalling that the government had earlier tried to set up a garbage dump on Kadamba Plateau, Adv. Rodrigues warned the Government not to take Ribandarites for granted and use Ribandar as a dumping place for Government problems. He added, "The government should consider using one of the vacant buildings at Althinho or around the Assembly Complex at Porvorim instead of bringing the sex workers to Ribandar or in the alternative the Government may consider deporting the sex workers to the state of their origin so that they could be rehabilitated by the women's organisations there." Adv. Rodrigues has also stated that Ribandar was chosen as a venue to host the sex workers without consulting the local MLA, and that Mrs. Victoria Fernandes has assured her full support in opposing the Government move to bring the sex workers to Ribandar. * * *
