Hi Fred
I'd like to make one more observation re the statement below, from one of
our all-knowing Goanetters. He refers to his "devastating facts and logic
that make all further discussion impossible." But surely, Goanet aims to
open up discussion, not to close it as implied by the quote above. Should
the all-knowing one be enlightened on this simple matter?

The issue of Mass in Indian style has come on this
forum before, though it was not termed "Hindu Mass". I
had commented then on the lines that the first
experiment was carried out at St. Xavier's College
Midnight Mass in the 70s when I was a student. It was
Fr. Pramananda Divadkar, brother of noted historian
Fr. John Correia-Affonso. Fr. Divadkar (Christian
name, Roque Correia-Affonso) was then the Rector of
the college.
At the offeratory the Noronha sisters, who behind the
Metro Cinema, one of them my classmate, came dancing
down the aisle and offered coconuts, flowers in a
thali (the aarti). People walked out from the college
quadrangle. Most of the congregration was from
Dhobitalao, including Goans staying in clubs "kudds".
I wrote about it in a piece which I headlined
"Midnight Scar" in the Goan Tribune. The Mumbai
Archidiocese under Cardinal Gracias was furious.
Through a fellow Goan journalist well connected to the
church, I was invited to meet with the church
officials but I declined. I wrote the piece from a
young person's perspective, and said words to the
effect that this experiment would drive young Goans
like myself away from the church. I warned the church
of the consequences and demanded that it be stopped
immediately. St. Xavier's then was already
"experimenting" with Youth Mass, guitars and
rock-style singing.
Fr. Divadkar was pulled up. The "experiment" was
shelved. I don't think it is done in areas where there
are English-speaking people. Fr. Divadkar was later
transferred to Delhi to work with CBCI, I think. Many
years later, he came back to Mumbai to become
principal of St. Mary's School in Byculla, I believe.
Yes, Vatican II allowed Mass in the language and style
of the people where the church is located. As many of
you will know, Vatican II turned the church upside
down. Most of the reforms contained in this great
document were good as it made the church less
dogmatic.
I know a priest who worked in Andaman Islands where
he celebrated Mass sitting down in "puja" style.
But the problem is where such a Mass is celebrated
when people are English speaking. The Konkani Mass
follows the Latin rite.
During the Marian Congress, Our Lady was dressed in
Indian style. In Africa, Mother Mary is portrayed in
the native styles. In India, devotional songs are sung
in local languages. No objections there.
Indian art has combined the Roman images of Jesus with
India motifs. Jesus, Mary and Joseph have been shown
in Indian images, particularly Christmas greeting
cards.
I would not like to attend a Hindu Mass, though I
would do just for observation. There was no need to
have Hindu Mass in a predominantly Portuguese and
Italian area.
Indian liturgy is evolving. There has been demand for
a "Indian church". Here on goanet, someone wrote about
Fr. Conceisaco Rodrigues. I have had discussions with
him when he was at Fr. Agnelo's at Bandra, and he once
or twice came to see me in my office at The Hindu.
He was one who wanted the Indian government to have
the right to appoint Cardinals in India. As I could
see, he thought the Indian government would appoint
him because of his work in Goa's freedom movement and
his close contact with the then Indian PM Jawaharlal
Nehru.
Unfortunately, the Indian government didn't want to
get into this muddle. The government didn't want to
risk its relationship with the Vatican. Fr. Rodrigues
didn't have his wish fulfilled.

When I searched for "Goa" and "India" on Project Gutenberg, I found
240 books showing up.

Many seem related to the history of the Philippines, and there's one
titled "The Pirates of Malabar, and an Englishwoman in India Two
Hundred Years Ago".

Snake-enthusiast Rahul Alvares' "Free from School" (feel happy I
convinced him to put it up there) is available there too.

Here's another book that could have some relevance to Goa: Prince
Henry the Navigator, the Hero of Portugal and of Modern Discovery,
1394-1460 A.D.
With an Account of Geographical Progress Throughout the Middle Ages As
the Preparation for His Work. [http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/18757]

There are books related to Macao and Akbar showing up too.
Interesting! Didn't someone say "sharing knowledge is power"?
Incidentally, you could help this project by proofreading just a
single page a day [http://www.pgdp.net/c/]

Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO
--

Dear Cybergaonkars on Goanet,

Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event
to be held on 27th October will focus on the
implications of Goa's three new Coastal Police Stations.

The announcement of the setting up of three new Coastal
Police Stations in Goa appeared in a single column of the
Official Gazette Series 1 No.25 on page 534 on 21st September
2006.

The 3 coastal police stations have been named Siolim, Harbour
and Mobor will have an interesting area of jurisdiction which would
be 12 nautical miles in the sea and 200 metres from the High Tide Line
covering the CRZ area all along the coast from Keri in Pernem Taluka
to Polem in Canacona Taluka.

These police stations will cover the sensitive ecologically fragile areas
being used for tourism, water sports, fishing and which also come
under the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA).

These Coastal Police Stations are supposed to have been created
as measure to deal with terrorism if we consider the statements of
various Police Officers of the IPS cadre. It is a proposal endorsed
by the Union Home Minister and Union Home Secretary.

These coastal areas are pre dominantly used by people involved
in the traditional occupations like Ramponkars, toddytappers besides
those involved in tourism like shack owners, bars, restaurant & hotel
owners and other services offered in tourism like disco clubs and
water sports.

Did the Government of Goa discuss this matter in the Legislative
Assembly before finalising this proposal ? Were the Village Panchayats,
Zilla Panchayats and Municipal Councils consulted before finalising this
important matter ? Could the strengthening of the Marine Police not be
good enough a measure to deal with coastal security ?

What impact will these police stations have on the cash rich coastal
belt especially in the context of offences committed by foreign and
domestic tourists like over staying, foreign exchange violations, narcotics,
assaults, traffic offences, murders etc.? What will be the level of political
interference with regards appointments & transfers of police officers
and handling of cases on a daily basis ?

Are the threats of terrorist attacks & bomb blasts a justifiable reason
to set up such police stations especially when they will be greatly
responsible for permanently changing the face of Goa's coastal areas ?

The Balcao discussion will cover these questions and
also evolve an agenda for action by citizens on the issue.

Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm
at the Goa Desc Resource Centre
No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta,
Mapusa and is open to members of the public.

We invite you to attend the Friday Balcao event
but if you cannot attend, then please send your

23-Oct-2006

  Dear Friend,

Today we have eliminated many of the diseases that cause blindness, and we
have invented all kinds of devices to improve our seeing. We have ordinary
glasses and bifocals, magnifying glasses, field glasses, telescopes and
microscopes, contact lenses and lens implants. But has our seeing improved?
Sometimes we just refuse to see! Can we see with the eyes of faith? Have an
insightful weekend! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: Thirtieth Sunday of the Year –“Lord that I might see!”
29-Oct.2006
  Readings: Jeremiah 31: 7-9;   Hebrews 5: 1-6;
Mark 10: 46-52;

In the first reading the prophet carries a message of hope for the exiles in
Babylon. The Lord will save what is left of his people and bring them back from
exile. Even the most helpless will share in the joy of this great event. The
people are in exile as once in Egypt. There will be a new exodus, as marvelous
as the old. God’s love, not human power, will again be triumphant because the
first to be delivered will be the feeble; the blind will receive sight from the
God of Israel. The reason for this hope is given by Yahweh himself: “For I am a
father to Israel and Ephraim my first-born son,”

  To See Him….
A man and his son went on a camping trip to the mountains. They hired an
experienced guide, who brought them into the heart of the forest, and the
beauty spots in the mountains that they themselves would never have found. The
old guide was constantly pointing out beauty and wonders that the passer-by
would never notice. The young lad was fascinated by the ability of the guide to
see so much in all his surroundings. One day the lad was so impressed that he
exclaimed “I’ll bet you can even see God out here.” The old guide smiled and
replied “Son, as life goes on it’s getting more and more difficult for me to
see anything but God out here.” “Lord that I might see…..”
Jack McArdle in ‘And that’s the Gospel truth’

In the second reading from the letter to the Hebrews we are reminded that the
high priest of the Old Testament understood sinners, because he was a sinner
himself. Jesus understands us better than any other because he is Love. The
high priest was called to service because he was a descendant of Aaron. Jesus
was called by God because he was his only son. Melchizedek, priest of God
prefigured Christ, called directly by the father to be priest, victim and
sacrifice.

Today’s gospel is rich in symbolism and Mark uses the cure of the blind man
Bartimaeus, not merely to reveal the power of Jesus, but also to spell out what
true discipleship entails: the following of Jesus no matter what the cost.
Bartimaeus is sitting by the roadside begging for alms when he hears that Jesus
is passing by. Perhaps Bartimaeus had heard of Jesus and never dreamt that
Jesus would be so close by. He begins to shout repeatedly that beautiful and
simple prayer: “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” The crowd scolds him and
advices him to be quiet but he shouts all the more: “Son of David, Jesus, have
pity on me!” In his repeated plea we see the persistence of faith and though he
was blind he could see in Jesus his only Saviour. Jesus notices his call and
asks Bartimaeus to be brought to him. Jesus always notices the prayer made in
faith and is ready to listen to our plea. On hearing of the invitation to come
to Jesus Bartimaeus leaps up, throws off his cloak
and goes to Jesus. Perhaps his cloak is the only valuable possession that he
had and he had used it to sit, sleep and beg. Now he does not need his cloak
for Jesus is all he needs. Jesus, though he sees that he is blind, asks him
what he needs. “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus with great faith
says: “Rabunni, Master, let me see again!” Jesus heals him and gives him his
sight. On receiving his sight Bartimaeus follows Jesus, going wherever he leads
him.

None So Blind As Those Who Will Not See…..
A young man blind from birth, fell in love with a girl. The more he got to
know her, the deeper his love for her became. He found her full of charm and
wit. A beautiful relationship developed between them. But then one day a friend
told him that the girl wasn’t very good-looking. From that moment on he began
to lose interest in her. Too bad. He had been ‘seeing’ her very well. It was
his friend who was blind. A blind

Hi Sunith
This is total waffle from Mario that cuts absolutely no ice but typically
wastes people's time in his reply to you.

My understanding from the Goanet posts on this issue about cancer is that,
a respected oncologist, practising in the USA, Gilbert Lawrence, asserted
that, there was evidence from a study on mice that has clear implications
for cancer treatment on humans. Now, you Sunith, have consistently made a
very legitimate request to Gilbert for the specific reference to the study
which
he used in his claim. It has been as simple as that. Unfortunately, both
Gilbert and Mario (with much talk but no substance as per Roland), have
avoided providing the answer and are engaging in a form of 'chicanery'
instead. Presumably, this is because they are unable to provide the answer
and this is seemingly another one of Gilbert's grandmother stories/"kaneos"
on a cancer issue.

I put it that both Mario and Gilbert have been trying to pretend that,
Sunith has got the wrong end of the stick or is somehow asking the wrong
question or does not understand English! Instead of coming clean and
apologising that, a mistake had been made by Gilbert and that there is
indeed NO evidence
relating to the mice experiment available to Gilbert, both are trying to
pull the wool over our eyes on Goanet. Well, I'd now like to see them take
me on over this issue! I repeat that the issue is simply whether Gilbert can
provide the hard evidence for the mice study on cancer or he cannot. Nothing
else is at issue here nor is Sunith seeking any interpretations on the study
referred to by Gilbert irrespective of Mario's valiant reference to terms
like 'causes', 'correlations' etc (presumably, he means through usage of
statistical tests even if this is not at all evident in what he says).

What is it about some people on Goanet who get hooked on unfounded evidence
and then try to waffle their way out of a dilemma of their own creation?
Here we have Mario and Gilbert berating young Sunith for asking a perfectly
legitimate question arising from Gilbert's original post on cancer. Is this
any different from Carmo presenting us with unfounded 'evidence' about
Indian IT specialists doing better than Harvard and Yale people and then
chickening out when I asked for the evidence?

As in the case of Carmo's IT experts, here in the UK, we have an entirely
unfounded rumour doing the rounds from time to time that Indian medical
doctors performed better than UK medical graduates on the PLAB test set by
the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board. If they stopped to think
about this for a moment, instead of insisting like one Goa trained doctor
did recently to me, UK medical graduates would not attempt such an exam set
for overseas medical graduates for the simple reason that they do not need
to do so and do not have access to it. It also costs a lot of money.
Incidentally, neither do EU medical graduates from outside the UK need this
PLAB exam, even when often, their spoken and comprehension English skills
are abysmal compared to a lot of Indian graduates with excellent grammatical
and idiomatic English.

Well, I await the sheer 'brilliance' in Mario's self congratulatory "facts
and
logic" scenario in providing the answer to the simple question set by Sunith
and now
reinforced by me. I just want a straight answer-- not more waffle please
from the said gentlemen. For recapitulation purposes, the question from
Sunith and now also from me is: What is the name and date of the journal
where the mouse experiment (carried out a few years ago) that Gilbert was
referring to, got published? Surely, this is ever so simple to answer in
plain English!

Obituary for Alberto de Noronha
by Isabel de Santa Rita Vas

This is a small tribute to Alberto de Noronha, who passed away on 19th
October 2006, having lived life according to his best lights. Alberto de
Noronha was my uncle; despite the difference in our ages, he was my good
friend; but my tribute to him springs from the fact that he was a lovely
human being.

Modesty was his middle name. Despite the fact that he worked with honour
and efficiency, first as a school teacher, then as a government official,
retiring from service as a Deputy Director of the Department of Statistics,
Alberto was humble to a fault. In the preface to his memoirs (yet
unpublished) he stresses his own small stature; nature, however, had seen
fit to make him a six-footer, slim and straight and ever noticeable even in
a crowd. In the same preface he states his conviction that he never
overshadowed any one, nor did he sow thorns in any one's path.

His modesty did not turn him inactive or stagnant. Alberto de Noronha
seemed to develop more and more interests with the passing of years. His
love of languages and his love of his land prompted him to translate Goan
short stories by numerous writers, from Konkani, Marathi and English into
Portuguese, and he proudly launched his first book, Onde o Moruoni Canta (
Where the Moruoni Bird Sings), in 2003. It was his fond hope that Goa would
thus be better known to the Portuguese-speaking world. It was again his
love of Goa and his deep interest in its culture and history that plunged
him into research leading to yet another book: The Third Culture, published
by Third Millennium Publications. Painstakingly gleaning diverse sources,
collecting facts and opinions offered by scholars, Alberto de Noronha
sought to trace the dynamic interpenetration of the Indian and the
Portuguese cultures across many centuries. Already into his 86th year of
life, and suffering from a life-threatening illness, the author waited with
enormous anxiety for his book to see the light of day. And with as much
relief as joy, he had it launched on 7th October 2006, just a few days
before he passed away. His enthusiasm and painstaking efforts were a source
of inspiration to all who knew Alberto de Noronha.

He was, amongst many other things, a man who valued the family. His joy in
his children, his pain in their struggles, his delight in his
grandchildren, and his loyal love and affection for his wife and long-time
companion, these were his fingerprints. Perhaps it is only too common to
love one's family. But with the best of them, Alberto strove to share with
his large family the values that had sustained him and his world.

And Alberto de Noronha was a man of deep and active faith. His prayer life
was the hub of his day. It could only have been this firm trust in
Providence that granted him serenity through the many upheavals of life,
and particularly in his last years of illness. The strength of his spirit
turned these into years of steady creativity. One can confidently venture
to say that Alberto Noronha reached the end of his days with a sense of
quiet fulfillment. He will be cherished by very many who knew and
respected him.

To,

The Editor,

Goan Observer,

Miramar, Panjim.

Sir,

Subject: Press Statement for kind favour of publication.

The Goa Su-Raj Party is not too shocked at the language used by the Vice
President of the Goa BJP, Prof. Subash Salkar, to counter the press
statement given by the President of the Lok Shakti Dr. Francisco Colaco
indicting the Goa BJP headed by the ex-Chief Minister, Mr. Manohar Parrikar,
for the wrong-doings during the tenure of its mis-rule in Goa with respect
to the communalizing of the Goan society as well as the un-accountable
mega-expenditure of public funds on IFFI-2004. This is expected from a
party that has been wholly indicted by none other than the country's most
prestigious institution such as the Comptroller and Auditor General of
India (CAG). That the Goa BJP has preferred to sell the idea to the general
public that the 'CAG' has connived with the presently ruling government of
Goa to show the Goa BJP in bad light is another thing altogether.

Dr. Francisco Colaco is perfectly justified in exposing the Goa BJP's double
standards vis a vis Gandhiji and its recently espoused 'Gandhigiri', an
absolute non-violent mode of holding corrupt government officials
accountable, for the simple reason that the Goa BJP cannot be seen anywhere
near to be following in the foot-steps of Gandhiji. That the Goa BJP had,
among other things, wanted to remove, as a holiday in Goa, the October 2
birth date of Gandhiji, which is celebrated throughout India with passion as
the birth date of the Father of the Nation , has not been forgotten by
Goans at large.

Through the above outburst (GT 25/10 Pg. A3), the BJP has admitted having
itself received commissions from INOX. And the people of Goa have witnessed
how peaceful the morchas it has conducted, have been. The test cases are
the stopping of the Governor's motorcade at the gates of the Raj Bhavan,
the Mala-Fontainhas incident of destroying public and private property, and
the un-erasable picture of the Savordem-Curchorem riots.

The office bearers of the Goa BJP are best advised to exercise restraint in
using offensive language to counter acute criticisms coming its way from
all quarters, whether it be from the political circle, from the NGOs or from
the members of the general public. It must remembered that the people are
the best judges of things over a long period of time where the generally
accepted norm that memories are short-lived is not valid in these cases.

Thanking you,

for Goa Su-Raj Party

BJP: Lok Shakti is a coterie of morons

By A Staff Reporter

PANJIM: Flaying the statement of Lok Shakti president Dr. Francisco Colaco,
BJP vice president prof. Subash Salkar called LOK SHAKTI as a coterie of
morons who are always on their toes to exhibit their ignorance to the
people. Taking a dig at Dr. Colaco's statement about Gandhigiri, prof Salkar
said that BJP had taken up several issues of public interest so far through
morchas, rallies and as such even in the past and will take up in the future
also, following peaceful principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Goans are very much
aware of BJP's such activities and Lok Shakti need not advise BJP on it he
said. The BJP vice president said that Lok Shakti who was bewailing every
now and then during the BJP's rule in Goa, had fallen asleep after the
Congress government's return to power. Hence Goans could not hear Lok
Shakti's voice when people of Saleli stood unitedly against the slave's
treatment given to them. Goans could not hear Lok Shakti's voice when most
of the NGOs protested against TCP Minister Babush Monserrate's move to
approve Goa's Regional Plan, 2011. But it is good to see Lok Shakti coming
out of deep slumber, added prof Salkar and advised that Lok Shakti now needs
to open its eyes wider, see around clearly, understand thoroughly and then
only let their words come out of their mouth. Criticising the Lok Shakti for
its statement on Inox company, prof Salkar pointed out that the BJP
government had signed the contract with the Inox company only for a period
from November 2004 to May 2005. After that it was the Congress government in
rule, he said and demanded to know why did it take 18 months to decide on
further contract and urged them to seek explanation from the Congress
government. He also challenged Lok Shakti to investiate who

Cornel has told us over and over again that EVERYTHING

Shades of the "Pinto revolt".

You can see how Goa was manipulated (and is still

top by corrupt means, even if it means sacrificing the
people of Goa.

Hi Santosh,

Every month in addition to my full-time clinical work of treating cancer
patients, I read at least three cancer journals. Next month is the annual
meeting of ASTRO - American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.
Their book, with the abstracts of the proceedings of the meeting, is 720 pages
and contains 2903 abstracts. The scientific papers cover the fields of
Oncology, Tumor Biology,
Radiation Physics and new Technologies in cancer management. To facilitate the
review of all this material, my two colleagues and myself will each study a
third of the papers. Then we will share the pertinent information of the
different interesting and important scientific studies. As I review these
scientific papers, I try to remember all the specific details and references of
the material I read, including authors, institutions, country. etc..

It is obvious, by Sunith's own account of his profession, that the two of us
are living and working in very different worlds. And the more separate we keep
those environments, the better it will be for both of us. With all due
respects to him and others, a litany of disparaging words is a poor substitute
to intelligent writing or seeking honest facts. Disparaging sentences may
impress those with a flair for English. While the flair humors me, it does not
impress this supurlo Goenkar.

Do not take this personal, as this may or may not apply to you. Some academics
with a staff of assistants, postgraduate and undergraduate students, reportedly
put in a 24-7 work-schedule. This is 24 hours a week and 7 months a year. You
obviously have a lot of time on your hands to go "through the published
literature on animal experiments related to this issue, over the past 50
years." Or you may be telling us the truth, which is - you are an
under-worked scientist and gave your guinea-pigs some rest. This to review
fifty years of animal experimentation. This luxury of time unfortunately and
definitely does not apply to us, in clinical / private medical practice.

Dr. Jayant's reply in response to my original post speaks for itself -
"Straight from the horse's mouth". This is not withstanding your statement
below; and you placing Jayant's post as a response to mine. As has been
repeatedly demonstrated on this topic, Mario - a cancer victim and survivor,
had a much better grasp and understanding of my posts than the self-acclaimed
English scholars and science academics. And Mario was not the exception. Given
the above reading requirements to maintain our proficiency and skill in our
daily work, please drop your attitude that you are the only goanetter that
understands science. And as it applies to the rest of us, you can be placed in
the classical (medical and other professional) dictum, "When one does not use
it (the knowledge and skill), one looses it". And to repeat myself, one does
not get it (the knowledge and skill), from www (world wide web) or being net
savvy.

So, it is OK to accept that you are no authority on every aspect of science.
In fact to accept your limitation will enhance your standing in the specific
area of your expertise. It is laughable to claim, that you went "through the
published literature on animal experiments related to this issue, over the
past 50 years." Likely your five cronies on goanet will believe that, and will
always be fooled. And they will come to your defense, with some scurrilous
writings. But not all goanetters can be fooled all the time.

Instead of zapping / expressing your opinions (with little facts) on every
science (and non-science) under the sun, why don't you educate us on the
neuro-science of Alzheimer, Autism, Parkinson Disorder, attention deficit
syndrome, hyperactive children, etc.? Or perhaps these situations apply to
humans, and may not be within your preview of expertise. And hence your
reluctance to cover these topics may be understandable.

I have no time right now to search my scientific archives and do your's or
somebody else's scut work. Now if you gave me a grant to hire a student to do
your research, you would have your answer a lot earlier. Your or Sunith's
ignorance is not my responsibility. If anybody does not wish to accept the
findings and the explanations that I reported, please feel free to do so. If
Santosh and Sunith are very keen in getting their study, please, 'put

Hi Cornel,

You start your post by claiming what I said in my several posts on this thread
(see below).
Can you state what exactly did I say that "has clear implications for cancer
treatment on humans."?
Thanks in anticipation.
I would appreciate if you were short, sweet and to the point.

-- cornel

My understanding from the Goanet posts on this issue about cancer is that, a
respected oncologist, practising in the USA, Gilbert Lawrence, asserted that,
there was evidence from a study on mice that has clear implications for cancer
treatment on humans.

The issue of Mass in Indian style has come on this
forum before, though it was not termed "Hindu Mass". I
had commented then on the lines that the first
experiment was carried out at St. Xavier's College
Midnight Mass in the 70s when I was a student. It was
Fr. Pramananda Divadkar, brother of noted historian
Fr. John Correia-Affonso. Fr. Divadkar (Christian
name, Roque Correia-Affonso) was then the Rector of
the college.

Hi Sunith
Thanks for your reply. I have been away for a few days and am only just
disjointedly catching up with endless mail. I now take it that you are in
London. Do email me and I'll give you my phone number, once again, when you
are more settled. We could meet over a pub lunch anywhere convenient to you
and ideally in the main central area of London.

Re Mario Goveia, I have known since he joined Goanet that he has a strange
and peculiar 'spoilt child' logic. He can never be wrong, his 'facts' are
always right as is his point of view, and everyone else is always wrong and
he simply has to have the last word (and he badly needs it!) about anything
even if a point has been repeated endlessly. Have you ever heard him
apologise for anything?

Finally, he has emphasised his skill at demolishing opponents, "point by
point" and unfortunately, some on Goanet have been taken in by this
nonsense.

In a presentation, it is the overall point(s) that is made that matters and
not perhaps a single sentence, or more, in isolation perhaps in a thousand
sentences in a substantial article. Mario has never figured out that the
context of individual sentences in a passage is most important and that, the
sum is greater than
its parts. Consequently, he attacks the constituent parts and not the
overall point that is being made in an argument. The British quote, "missing
the wood for the trees" was perhaps what its originator had in mind for what
Mario is all about and you correctly sussed him out so soon after you joined
Goanet.

Interestingly too, Mario has made himself a permanent critic of other points
of view. How nice it would be if he actually wrote something of substance at
least once. Minimally, we could take it apart with some relish!

Oh and there is one other point. He simply does not understand that most
"facts" and "logics" are perpetually contested, some much more than others,
in the terrain of open discussion. His facts and logic are ipso facto
contested as much as anybody else's even though he once indicated to me,
quite some time ago, that he knew that his facts were right and that his
logic was above board!

[Goanet] World Youth Chess Championships2006: Ivana maintains lead, India looks to sweep Under 10 Boys!

Round 8 World Youth -

In a battle of the top seeds Olympiad player and second seed WGM Dronavalli
Harika (ELO 2353) lost a crucial game to top seeded
Ukranian WGM Diana Arutyunova (2392) in the eight round of the Girls Under
18 section of the World Youth Chess Championships being played in Batumi,
Georgia. In a Dutch Defence setup, Harika played riskily quite unlike her
usual self. Her pawn sacrifice did not really work and finally Harika had to
concede the game after just 38 moves when confronted with Diana's
unstoppable 'C' pawn passer.

Asian Silver medallist Ivana Furtado beat National Under 7 Champion M.
Mahalakshmi in the eight round to maintain her slender half point lead.
There is only one player Navyavaishnavi who is on 6.5 points so it could be
said that Ivana's chances of a medal are exceedingly bright ar this stage.
Ivana had beaten Mahalakshmi in Teheran so she used her psychological edge
to demolish her rival in this crucial encounter. If Ivana can beat
Navyavaishnavi tomorrow then Goa's first medal at the World Championships
thanks is virtually assured!

Goa's WFM and Asian Gold medallist Bhakti Kulkarni (2062) suffered her
second successive defeat when she lost to second seeded
Indonesia's Sukandar Kharisma (2239). Her chances of a medal have
disappeared and she will try to salvage some points in the remaining three
rounds to aim for a top ten finish.

In the Boys Under 10 section, 2005 Asian Under 8 Gold medallist Girish
Kaushik (1990) maintained a perfect score of 8 points by beating second seed
Georgian Irakli Beradze (2080). Mysore's Girish has a giant 2 point lead
over his rivals and is virtually assured of a Gold medal going into the
remaining three rounds. The top 6 spots are all held by Indians in this
section and it remains to be seen whether India will sweep the tally here!

In the Under 8 Boys section, unrated Ch. Mohineesh drew with compatriot
Prince Bajaj (1878) to keep a slender half point lead going
into the ninth round where he plays Armenian Manuel Petrosian (1790).

[Goanet] A woman without a culture of her own

I once attended a seminar where the audience was asked
this question. If you are in a room full of people who
are you most likely to gravitate towards? The answer
apparently was, the person who is most like you
culturally.

This has been true for most part of my life. Growing
up in the heat of the Arabian Gulf, my identity was
forged by the close and sheltered quarters of the
Diasporic Catholic Goans, who huddled together as if
awaiting the Apocalypse.

When I began to work, I encountered the intoxicating
intellectualism of Maharashtrans and Madrassis and my
circle of friends enlarged to include other fellow
Indians. Although we worked alongside Arabs, Europeans
and Filipinos and enjoyed socialising with them at the
workplace, the cultural barriers were never crossed
boldly enough to take them home with us.

Being in the US for the past 6 years though, I am not
at all inclined to make friends along cultural lines.
This is not from lack of opportunity. Being guest
workers, we are in constant contact with other guest
worker Indian families. I am more attracted by
commonality of humour, ideas, education and exposure.
My friends range from American-Asian to
American-Caucasian.

Does this mean that I no longer have a specific
cultural identity of my own? That it has morphed into
a blur of cultures along the way and now almost faded
into oblivion? It would be interesting to know how
other diasporic Goans have evolved culturally during
the course of their lives.

If you're a happily married couple and visiting Goa then perhaps now is a
good time to renew your wedding vows. Alternatively if you've never been to
Goa then maybe now is the best time to visit this idyllic laidback paradise,
and renew your wedding vows at the same time.

There are plenty of reasons for renewing your vows. You could be celebrating
a special anniversary, or maybe just reaffirming your
commitment after a particularly stressful or rocky period. Or perhaps your
original wedding ceremony was just a formal legal signing of a register, and
you always wanted something more meaningful and romantic.

Whatever your reasons for renewing your vows, rest assured that the process
and the ceremony will strengthen your marriage and will give you something
to cherish for many years. Plus you will have an album full of splendid
photos that will make everyone envious! Goa's awe inspiring sunsets and our
carefully chosen open-air venues will ensure that.

A wedding vow renewal ceremony that will fortify your relationship for the
years to come, combined with the magical warm ambience that Goa provides,
will give you a wealth of delightful memories to cherish forever.

And if you're not married and have read up to here, then maybe you could
gift a renewal ceremony to some nice married couple you know that are
visiting Goa !
