[Goanet] Mine of Corpses: Hope amidst grief and pain (Preetu Nair)
Mine of Corpses: Hope amidst grief and pain Preetu Nair preetu_nair at gomantaktimes.com SANGUEM/SOUTH GOA/ INDIA: From Lalita Mirashi's eyes flows pain that falls drop by drop into the heart. Her pain is immense and grief is endless. Her strained face reflects hope. Only, there isn't any left. Her husband, Satish, was buried alive in an enormous landslide at Tollem mine in Sanguem taluka on Saturday, leaving a two month pregnant Lalita with three little daughters, a widowed mother-in-law and an unmarried sister-in-law. It is a heartrending scene as she holds on to her children in desperation and uncertainty, wails loudly, screams in pain and then falls unconscious in her two-room 'kutcha' house in Dharginim. Neighbors explain, "She has not eaten anything since Saturday. She is pregnant and the shock is unbearable for her. On Sunday, we had to take her to a private hospital where the doctor put her on a drip and kept her under observation for sometime." Her three children smile and play, too young to realize their mother's suffering. In between bouts of consciousness and unconsciousness, Lalita reveals that till the landslide killed Satish; he eked out a living by working double shift at the mining unit run by Radha Timblo. He worked as a Supervisor. "We don't have any agricultural land nor have any other source of income. My husband was the only one in the family with a steady income. My younger brother-in-law has just started work," she revealed. Satish was earning Rs 100 per shift of 8 hours and he often did double shift to meet the family's monthly expenses. Satish's younger sister Bharati, who sat next to Lalita is silent and stares speechlessly. She was the first to learn that her brother was buried alive in the mine. "We rushed to the spot and Bharati was shocked at the sight there. She knew that she had lost her brother forever. Disappointed and shocked into disbelief we managed to return home," whispers her friend Jayanti Velip, even as from the dark, dingy kitchen we hear an elderly woman wailing. The woman we learn is Satish's mother. Relatives reveal that she believes that her son would survive the landslide, walk into the house soon, calling out for his, "ayee". If Lalita lost a loving husband in the landslide, then Ulhas Bhandari from Ugem saw his 21-year-old son, Sunny, being buried under the debris. He called out for help, but in vain. "Five minutes wait made the difference between life and death. Sunny had finished work, but waited five minutes to get a lift in the Volvo, which was about to finish loading. It was Sunny's last trip for the day," recollects Ulhas. Little did the family realise that this was to be the last trip of his life. Ulhas looks stoic but his words have the stamp of desolation. "I don't know why such a tragedy has hit our family? We have lost our young son," he says. Sunny had started working in the mine dropping out of school in standard IX. He was earning anything between Rs 1500 to 2500 a month, depending on the overtime he did. The only consolation for Lalita and Ulhas, besides the other aggrieved families is that Mine owner Radha Timblo had visited their homes on Sunday with promises to help. But will any help that the Mining company provides, ever compensate for the loss of a husband or a young son? Rs 2 lakh compensation Meanwhile, Chetan Timblo, the owner of Tollem mine said that initially the six families would be paid Rs 2 lakh each. He emphasized that this is only the initial help and the Company will look after the families of those buried alive in the landslide. "Our priority still lies in extricating the bodies. All man power and equipment has been put to work to retrieve the bodies. We intend to order an internal inquiry into the unfortunate happening," he added. Additional Collector to probe Goa's Minister of Mines Minister Digambar Kamat told GT that Additional Collector, North, Swapnil Naik has been appointed to probe into the disaster at Tollem mines. "The government has also asked the Company to pay initial compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased, which the Company agreed," added Kamat. The search operations entered the third day, without much success. Help flows from Congress party The Congress block committees of Sanguem, Curchorem and Sanvordem have mobilized their members to assist people working at the site of the Tollem mining disaster by lending a helping hand. Besides, providing solace and moral support to the victims' families. (ENDS) == The above article appeared in the December 12, 2006 edition of Gomantak Times, Goa
[Goanet] Release Sanvordem Enquiry Report
Citizens' Initiatives has march for Free and Secular Goa, demands Release of Sanvordem Enquiry Report On the occasion of 45th Mukti Din (Liberation Day) of Goa, Citizens' Initiatives for Communal Harmony (CICH) organised a rally in Panjim on the theme "Towards a Free and Secular Goa". Citizens marched through the streets of Panjim and demanded an end to attempts to communalise Goa. Starting from Azad Maidan, the rally wended its way through the streets of Panjim before returning to the Azad Maidan. Speaking at the rally, (CICH) Co-Convenor Ramesh Gauns called for the government to release the report of the enquiry into the Sanvordem-Curchorem communal violence in March 2006. Pointing out that six months have now passed since May 2006, when the enquiry under the North Goa District Collector was set up, he charged that the government is not showing any seriousness about the issue and demanded that the government put before the people the report at the earliest. Com. Christopher Fonseca of AITUC said that communal forces must be defeated and commended the efforts of CICH in creating awareness on the issue of communalism and its dangers. He stressed the important role that the working class has to play in ensuring that communal forces do not succeed in their designs of dividing the people. He said that a society in which there is no true equality between all people is not a just society. Ms. Sabina Martins from Bailancho Saad pointed out that while a public outcry against communalism is necessary, it is equally important to ensure we guard against communal practices in our day to day lives, be it in the home, workplace or anywhere. She also emphasized that tokenism should be avoided. Mr. Prajal Sakhardande of Goa Heritage Action Group recalled the significance of Liberation Day and the history behind the naming of Azad Maidan and stated that Goa's communal harmony is its heritage which must be preserved. Poet Mr. Ramesh Veluskar stated that the unity of all progressive forces was the need of the hour if communal harmony had to be restored and sustained. Mr.Dadu Mandrekar, noted Ambedkarite activist, spoke about the importance of fighting the evil of caste, and urged the audience to strive for building a society that does not discriminate on the basis of caste, religion or gender. Mr. Deepak Bandigere of Lifeline called for transparency in the functioning of the system which would then leave little scope for rumour mongering. Statements about aspirations for a free and secular Goa were also made through cultural presentations. A skit on the avarice of Goa's politicians that prevents the Goan dream from being realized was presented by the students of Government College, Khandola. The children's group from Arz, Vasco, presented a skit "Hum Vahan ke bacche hain" showing how children of poor migrants are discriminated and treated badly, and how changes need to be made to ensure that no child is neglected or mistreated by the system. The Rang-Ixtt theatre group presented a mime done by the children which showed the importance of unity. The chidren's group from Jan Ugahi, Margao, performed a skit showing how the seed of discrimination is sown in children's minds at home and in school, and what can be done by committed teachers to combat this. Various songs, poems, etc. were also presented by artists from Goa. An oath was then taken at Azad Maidan to work towards a Goa where everybody's dreams and specially those of the toiling masses would have space, where the strategy of divide and rule would be comprehensively defeated and where land, water, and natural resources are sustained in people's hands. In the evening, the 3-day exhibiton on the theme "Towards a Free and Secular Goa" co-ordinated by Dipti Arolkar of Citizens' Initiatives for Communal Harmony, concluded at the Menezes Braganza Hall. The exhibition featured a work "Goa Darshan" by late noted artist Chandrakant Kerkar. There were also paintings by Sheetal Volvoikar, Dennis D'Souza, Priya Naik and Seema Kanekar. Rangolis on the theme of unity of faiths created by Ajay Khandolkar of Goa Shipyard and Seema Kanekar were appreciated by the people who visited the exhibition. The coexistence of diversity and the need for its sustenance was the highlight of the exhibition. Albertina Almeida Ramesh Gauns Co-convenors Citizens' Initiatives for Communal Harmony

[Goanet] Fitz Remedios Santana de Souza
An interesting page on the Wikipedia. R. S. de Souza, is a Kenyan lawyer and ex-politician of Indian origin, who was an important figure in the campaign for independence for Kenya, a member of the Kenyan parliament in the 1960s and Deputy Speaker for several years. He helped provide a legal defence for those accused of Mau Mau activities, and he was one of the people involved in the Lancaster House conferences held to draw up a constitutional framework for Kenyan independence. Born to a Goan family in Mumbai in 1929, de Souza lived in Zanzibar before settling in Kenya in 1942. Fitz de Souza took a first degree in England and trained as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn. As a young man in 1952 he joined a team of lawyers from various Commonwealth countries, lawyers educated in England but not born there, defending Kenyans accused of Mau Mau activities by the British colonial administration, in a series of trials including that of Jomo Kenyatta. Feelings in the country were running high, with some settlers of European ancestry disrupting any legal process for people they considered assassins, while other people in Kenya were convinced of bad faith amongst those involved in the all-white British prosecution. In this atmosphere, de Souza and an Asian colleague faced implied allegations of 'encouraging' defendants to criticise police witnesses, but judges at the East African Court of Appeal supported them, praising their assistance to the court. For part of the 1950s Fitz de Souza was studying for a PhD at the London School of Economics and was politically active both there and in Kenya. His doctoral thesis was on "Indian Political Organization in East Africa" (1959). He knew Kenyatta and was a major figure in the movement towards an independent Kenya. He has been described during this period both as a "freedom fighter"[1] and as someone "organiz[ing] Africans and Asians against the colour bar".[2] In the early 1960s he was a legal adviser at the Lancaster House conferences in London where Kenyatta and the Kenyans worked with the UK Colonial Secretary, Reginald Maudling, and his team to develop a constitution for the country. In 2001 de Souza told the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission why he felt the Lancaster House Constitution had been a good constitutional framework, and expressed his disagreement with some subsequent changes, especially the re-introduction of detention without trial. The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has described him as making "a principled exit from public life in the 70s".[3] De Souza was an elected member of the Kenyan Parliament even before full independence in 1963, and Deputy Speaker of the Lower House from June 1963. He left this post in 1970, spent many years in private practice, and is now semi-retired. He is married with four grown-up children. In 2004 he was given a Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award alongside other people honoured for their "outstanding contribution to the understanding of the Indian civilisation and for advancing India's cause abroad"[4] at a conference opened by the Indian prime minister and organised with the aim of "bringing together the Indian Diaspora and leveraging the potential offered by the Global Indian Family".[5] 2005 brought a different kind of publicity when a Pulitzer prize-winning book written by Caroline Elkins, an associate professor at Harvard, quoted a "respected attorney in Nairobi",[6] de Souza, as believing that at least one hundred thousand Kikuyu disappeared at the time of Mau Mau, in "a form of ethnic cleansing on the part of the British government".[7]These figures have been challenged by John Darwin, a fellow of Nuffield College, and lecturer on the History of the British Commonwealth at Oxford University.[8] In December 2006, Comissioner for Non Resident Indian affairs (Government of Goa) Eduardo Faleiro announced that Souza would be one of the eight persons to be honoured during the Global Goans Convention, to be held from January 3-5, 2006. The awards, for the first time, are being given to "eminent non-resident Goans and persons of Goan origin." And once > the boom is followed by the inevitable crash will Goa and the people be > able to recover from that crash? This is an excellent article. Yes, eventually we have to protect us from ourselves. The leaders who oppose this plan have great integrity and will not be bought. They will win, and the Regional Plan 2011 will not survive in its present form. I have little doubt about that as the opposition is growing and too widespread. But it is not the leaders who oppose this plan that I am concerned about. It is the vast majority who oppose it now. Some will be bought for a bag of rice or chicken in the upcoming election. Others will change their mind and be seduced by the plan as a way up the economic ladder. Will they resist Regional Plan 2021, Regional Plan 2031? Will they give in (again)? Will Goa look like a Bombay surburb? Regards, George

Even if the Regional Plan is withdrawn, it is unlikely that that will automatically put an end to the SEZ proposal. There is a central enabling legislation that declares SEZs to be 'foreign territory' on Indian soil, which means that the law there will be suited to the interests of global corporate capital. And the losers will be the workers and masses, as the history of such ideas shows. Nitin Kunkloikar of GCCI defended the Regional Plan yesterday. Corporate capital will try everything it can to achieve its objectives -- the only way to resist is if there is a united opposition from Goans of all classes and communities against Regional Plan, SEZ, expressway and what-have-you. The battle lines are clearly drawn -- it is transnational capital and its local allies against the rest. Take your pick. -- Question everything -- Karl Marx
Re: [Goanet] Albert writes & Alfred adds
My dear Friends, I have written earlier that Mario should not be a target of mobing. I the same vein neither shoud Albert be. He, clearly, writes from his heart; please don´t ask me where the cockles are situated in that famed organ of love and sentiment. I could not not place it, anatomically, even if placed before my discerning eye on any table, Ribandar or Moira. But, if secularism is the cardinal objection to Albert´s voicings, then i would opine that instead of ranting him out to please invite/induce our friends or enemies from other faiths to explain their creed. I know, from personal experience, how that would help, ecumenically. Once, in summer -87s, when the Festival of India was hosted in Stockholm, i was requested by the mayor to explain the theological aspects of the Hindu deities that were exibited in Stockholm´s Kulturhus (House of Culture). I was taken aback; but, saved, I believe, by those Deilties: just then arrived, as my guest, the distinguished Indian Journalist, TVR Shenoy. He knew all that was possibly required about the Hindu pantheon, My then 13-year old daugter, Maura, & I did the job well, even with little un-Shenoy, embelishments. Re: [Goanet] Goanet Digest,
Hi Bernardo I regret I simply can't figure out what you mean by "you have nothing to say about the retentive statements of your cohort FN innit?" Please could you put it in simpler English to help me in my understanding of your lingo? On the second point, Thanks for informing me that "there are hundreds of Brits coming to Macau. The grass is green wherever." Indeed I wish there were many thousands instead of just hundreds as we are rather crowded on these small isles and yet, thousands are making a beeline to the UK every day! Cheers and yuletide greetings. Re: [Goanet] Goanet Digest, Vol 1, Issue 652
Hello Rolandino, I am glad that you have made it very clear to the patracar the false hope of an 'Economic Giant'. BC India Achieving Economic Status That is a pipe dream. Don't believe everything the western media tells you. The grounds for that achievement just don't exist. There is legal infrastructure but no speedy resolution. There is no clean administration. There is not even distribution of wealth beyond a few metros. There is no fear or respect for law. These are conditions necessary for economic status. They exist in China but not in India. What you see today is western exploitation of the sudden mass creation of an Indian middle class. Globalisation adjustments that make it expedient to employ cheaper Indian labour. Once cheaper labor is found elsewhere and further computerisation and corporate efficiencies make labour take an even lesser role, you will find the back of this same Indian middle class break as suddenly as it was created. So don't look forward just yet to any enduring return of overseas Goans back to Goa or India or the current trickle turning into a flood. ___ All New Yahoo! Re: [Goanet] Liberation of Goa
Hi Albert I distinctly recall that this is not the first time you have expressed the kind of view that you "hate to listen to [Mario's] outdated philosophy." Also, when you say "I hope he knows what he is writing about" such a similar sentiment has also been expressed by other Goanetters, especially, when proudly told by Mario himself that, he has access to "devastating logic and facts." Also, that he does not rely on "wide reading but mainly on commonsense!" Notwithstanding your previous request for clarification from Mario, but not receiving it---and thus sadly leading you to withdraw from Goanet for a while, I sincerely hope you will have greater luck this time, regarding the simple clarification(s) you seek. [Goanet] Atanu Dey's blog comments (on Goa)
http://www.deeshaa.org/2006/12/17/panjim-goa/#more-662 Panjim, Goa It is interesting to learn that Goa tops the list of favorite places not just for your average European tourist but also the Al Qaeda. Israel issued a warning to its citizens. "In light of terrorist threats by Al Qaeda in India, a concrete threat now exists specifically for the Indian state of Goa, which hosts many tourists, among them Israelis, during late December and over the civil New Year," the National Security Council Counter Terrorism Headquarters has said. Now that sort of a warning adds something to one's travels. After over a decade, I found myself in Goa once again this week. The last time I was there, I spent an amazing week hanging out at the Colva beach. And on another occasion, I spent a luxurious four days at the Taj Resort at Fort Aguada. But this was the first time that I was in Panjim (Panaji, as the locals call it.) The first impression I got of Goa this time was on the 35 km ride from Dabolim airport to Panjim. The roads were unbelievable. They were beautifully made and did not have potholes. I must have traveled around 200 kms during my stay and found fewer potholes and imperfections than I would find in a half-kilometer stretch of Pune roads. I could not stop being amazed by the quality of not just the roads but also the city streets. They were the kind that I would find in any developed nation. And to top it all, there was no trash on the streets. All that gave me a strange feeling when I heard the locals talking in Hindi or Marathi. I felt as if I were outside India and it was disorienting to hear them speak an Indian language. My stay was a short three days and I didn't get used to the good roads and the sparse traffic. Good for me as I have to live in Pune with its potholed roads and incredibly dense traffic. I stayed at a place called Panjim Inn. The website for the small tourist hotel was inviting. But I would not recommend the place. It was a huge disappointment. On top of that, the management has attitude. I suppose there is sufficient demand that they can afford to have an attitude. This I suppose Goa shares with the rest of India. India is incredibly expensive when it comes to hotels. For the price I paid in Goa, I would have had a hugely better hotel in the Silicon Valley. Some friends of mine who recently visited India cut short their visit because they were shocked at the hotel rates in Mumbai. High prices can be due to high demand or low supply or both. In the case of Indian hotels, it is definitely due to low supply. I read somewhere that the city of Shanghai has more hotel rooms than India has. No wonder Indian hotels are miserable. So I suppose there is an opportunity for a chain of low priced hotels. For that you need to bring down the costs. That is not trivial because hotel costs are dictated partly by the cost of real estate. In Mumbai, real estate costs account for a major part of the total costs. I think the answer lies in creating large hotels on the outskirts of the large cities and bussing the people in every day in the morning into the city in luxury coaches. Can't think of anything else. [Goanet] Deck the Halls with Sticks & Folli
Deck the Halls with Sticks & Folli How Stacy jump-started Christmas decorations in North Goa By Cecil Pinto Stacy Sequeira from Aldona, reigning Teen of the Year (Goa), received the Sacrament of Confirmation on 10th December. Her father, my friend Heston, decided to use the opportunity to hang the Christmas decorations and lighting a bit earlier and kill two birds with one stroke. Their almost-opposite neighbours, the Almeidas, also had a major celebration planned for the next Sunday - George and Lorna were celebrating the christening of their second child. Taking Heston's lead the Almeidas too decided to put their Christmas décor in place earlier than usual. That night a Moidekar, Godfrey Gonsalves, passed the decorated Sequeira and Almeida residences and stopped at Bar Manuel nearby for a drink, and to find out why the whole area was lit up well in advance of Christmas. Godfrey queried the barman Edwin D'Souza who decided to pull the Moidekar's leg and told him that it was a sign of good education. The well educated always put out their decorations early, like in the West. Now our Moidekar Godfrey was quite wealthy, having worked in the Gulf for a good thirty years and having built his regulation RCC bungalow bang on the road in Moira. But Godfrey always carried a chip on his shoulder because of his lack of education. He had just managed to scrape through his SSC exam and then studied AC & Refrigeration at a private ITI before finally getting a lucky break in Bahrain. Godfrey wanted to show that he was as educated as the others so he promptly went home and told his sons and daughters-in-law to put out the Christmas décor. They did so with a vengeance that included stringing colourful 'series' bulbs over the roof and compound wall and around the giant Christmas tree in the front-yard. Moidekars being the competitive and eccentric lot they are, by the next night the entire ward, and by the next night the whole of Moira, was lit up and ready for Christmas. Nachinola followed suit, naturally, and within a week the whole of Bardez and North Goa was pre-maturely decorated for Christmas. Now before we slip into rural socio-politics lets get back to the theme of this column - Christmas decorations in Goa. Whereas in the West mistletoe, ivy and holly plants are used to make decorations at home, Goans use thermacol - and sometimes mangrove leaves which resemble holly. Every Catholic house will have a Christmas Star hanging outside. Decades back Christmas Stars were made at home by using bamboo sticks and fine paper sheets called 'folli'. The stars were five pointed and rather rotund to accommodate a candle or bulb, and the accompanying heat, without catching fire. In 1964 Blaze D'Souza from Borda experimented and made a seven pointed star with one point majestically longer than the others. It won the First Prize at the parish Star Competition and the devious Blaze, knowing that he might not be able to duplicate the feat next year, retained the skeleton. Changing the folli and bulb colour every year he won the competition three years in a row before the judges wisened up that it was the same star. The one feature that makes Goan Christmas décor truly unique is the 'gotto' (Konkani for grotto/crib depicting the birthplace of Jesus). The gottos that are entered into the parish Crib Competition take weeks of advance preparation. Crucial to success is the uniformity in the 'nachnem' grass. Nachnem (millet) is sown in a thin layer of mud/sand which is carefully tended till one gets a miniature lawn that may not accurately represent the landscape or vegetation in Bethlehem but is significant to the judges of the Crib Competition. Another standard crib item is the 'lake' consisting of a horizontal mirror or glass piece being covered on the edges with soil and giving the appearance of water. Since biblical descriptions of geographical features are rather vague crib competitors indulge in a bit of creativity and it is not unusual to see functional waterfalls and erupting volcanoes dotting the landscape. And a bright animated star is of course crucial. Curiously though, in addition to the standard painted clay figures of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Kings, Shepherds and assorted Camels and Sheep one should not be shocked to find in a typical Goan Catholic crib, little plastic figurines of GI Joe, Spiderman, a fire engine, Barbie dolls and some Disney characters. This is considered acceptable. In fact I recall as a kid religiously collecting the small miniature plastic animals (including tigers and elephants) that came with Binaca toothpaste - for inserting in the crib landscape. Till as close as twenty years back the Christmas tree was made by cutting a branch from the closest casaurina tree. Or one grew a Christmas Tree (araucaria) in a pot or in one's garden. Very few people then could afford the imported artificial Christmas trees which cost a bomb, unlik

[Goanet] Goa to be gamblers' paradise
Goa to be gamblers' paradise Goa's popular Floating Casino 'Caravela' seen in the clip http://youtube.com/watch?v=56QhZKDHokw === Mayuresh Pawar in Mumbai / Panaji December 21, 2006 10:53 IST (Rediff.com) Toying with the idea of adding more glitz and jangle to its beach tourism, Goa, the world's fifth best tourist destination, is set to become a gambler's paradise a la Las Vegas, as the state government has agreed in-principle to allow licences to five more floating casinos. Almost after a decade the first-ever off-shore casino was floated, Goa is receiving tremendous response for opening new off-shore casinos and with this, the state government has hiked the annual fee from Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million) to Rs 5 crore (Rs 50 million) to carry out operations for off-shore casinos. Goa enjoys the status of having the first-ever floating casino in India, which was started by the Advani group along the Mandovi river here in the capital city. The Goa government has legalised gambling, a pastime in India which goes back to the time of the Vedic era as related in the Mahabharat. "We are receiving immense response for opening new casinos and the cabinet decided to increase the annual fees," a senior official told Business Standard. The official said that the state received a total of 15 applications for opening floating casinos and of those 10 were approved by the Goa government. But, the Pratapsingh Rane-led Congress government drew flak from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in this regard. "The cabinet has decided to allow only five additional licences for off-shore casinos," the official maintained. It is learnt that the other reason for increasing the annual fee is to restrict the number of off-shore casinos only to five following strong criticism from BJP. So far the gaming industry is small in Goa, with casinos in eight 5-star hotels-Goldfinger (Cidade de Goa Beach Resort), Hacienda De Oro (Holiday Inn Goa Resort), Las Vegas-The Gaming Club (Leela Palace Hotel), Goa Nugget (Ramada Caravela Beach Resort), Treasures Casino (Majorda Beach Resort), Winners (Goa Marriott Resort) and Chances (Vainguinim Beach Resort) and one floating casino (The Caravela). [Goanet] KONKAN CURRY: Mr. Goanese, please stand up
Mr. Goanese, please stand up. Put your foot down firmly, now! Once there were beaches kissed by the sun, now one does not know whose son is kissing whom on the beach beds by night. Once it was possible to wade in ankle deep water on the beach while the children built sand castles and did their own version of sand sculptures, now the touts for the beach beds shoo you off. Once this was our own land, today it is still our land but we are treated like strangers. Konkani and Marathi have no currency; one has to learn Hindi, Rumani/Lamani or Kannada to survive. What will happen tomorrow when almost all land is sold under the Regional Plan 2011? What happens to siblings when the elder brother pimps for his mother or elder sister? Goenkara, you are already Goanese; soon the Goan will be gone! Writes Dr. Oscar Rebello, fellow columnist in GT and Convenor of the "Save Goa Campaign" whose letter of appeal I will blatantly plagiarize, "Goa, today is at the crossroads of her very existence. Her soul; Her identity and Her beauty is being mercilessly sold off, all for the petty gains of a petty few, in the guise of the monstrous, evasive and sinister: Goa Regional Plan 2011.Besides the calamitous destruction of Goa's natural beauty, her culture and her heritage, we are set to witness an unprecedented social disaster if mega 5 star projects like townships, condominiums, golf courses, resorts, etc. take root in our precious land." I am sure Dr. Oscar Rebello will not mind the plagiarisation. In fact, I suspect he will be happy that I have done that. Imitation is, after all is said and done, the sincerest form of flattery. I am sincere. I am also imitating him and going to Azad Maidan on 18 December at 3.00 P.M. In fact, I think I can beat him to it at report at Café Prakash near Azad Maidan at 2.00 P.M. The rumour mill has it that they are putting just a few chairs and as the current President of the Botanical Society of Goa, I should not be seen standing when he is not addressing the gathering. Lok kya kahenge? So I am going to be there first. Most of us have this experience in booking a spot in the line for our children's admission in to a good school. I am doing this for my continuation in India's No.1 State. Well worth it, wouldn't you agree? Time is short to say what I have in mind, so I will continue to plagiarize. Doctor's thoughts and words make me feel like exclaiming "That's exactly what I was going to say!" So in Doctor's borrowed words, "The 'Regional Plan 2011' must not be seen as merely a dishonour to our Mother Goa or a desecration of our ancestral land or the defilement of Parshuram's legendary arrow struck across the Sahyadris. These views are benignly romantic. It must be seen for what it truly is. The savage and brutal assault, rape and murder of our daughter. If we do not have the guts to protect our daughters, we really will have no soil left to bury our heads in shame." See, I told you, they are just what I wanted to say. If you do not believe me read the first paragraph all over again. What options do we have? "To register our horrified indignation and loudly declare our protest at this agonizing destruction of our land, we plan to organise a massive public rally on December 18, 2006 at 3.00 pm at Azad Maidan, Panjim to liberate ourselves and free Goa from this tyrannical Regional Plan 2011." Writes the dotor. The world stands in need of liberation. Again. Visit www.savegoa.com and get connected to the movement that has already begun. Almost everyone, his aunt and her dog are coming to Azad Maidan on 18 December, 2006. It is a peaceful protest with a single point agenda: Withdraw the Regional Plan 2011. We need to Save Goa till our leaders and legislatures can see beyond their noses and consult the experts if they are unable to think. If the bureaucrats do not provide the necessary information, it is not as if the politicians do not know what to do with them. They have been doing that umpteen times already. Passing the buck and transferring officials in Government is as common a game as 'passing the parcel" is at children's parties. So, if the Forest Department did not give advice, did the Minister not know how to get it? Chief Secretaries of Goa have been shunted out for smaller offences perceived by the political bosses. So will someone tell us something new? Till the answers are forthcoming, be an Azad Panchi and be at Azad maidan on the eve of Liberation Day. On 17 December, 1961 no one in Goa really believed they would be free from 451 years of colonial rule. They were. It did not even take a General. A Lieutenant Colonel managed it all. So, why should one think Dr. Oscar Rebello cannot do an encore? Not everyone need to be a martyr like young Floriano Vaz who died for Konkani on 20 December, 1986 or like Nilesh Naik who died to save our environment from Nylon 66 on 23 January, 1996. This is the decennial year, 2006. Le
