Caste system is everywhere in India. Do you think there's no caste system in Goa. My late mother's ex-maid told her (she must be in her late sixties now) that when she was young and went to school, she was kept separately from other students as she was a scheduled caste. This was in my father's village, Moira. Maybe the situation in Goa has changed now. But, I don't think that any Hindu Brahmin family in Goa will employ a scheduled caste Hindu to work in their house. I apologise if I'm wrong. I had the problem when we lived in Gujarat much much before the riots. I employed a scheduled caste, and the women in the society where we lived remarked 'Your husband is of a very high caste family, how do you employ a scheduled caste'. I sweetly smiled and said, this is 'Ghandiji's state'. Lets not discuss caste system, because all human beings are equal. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami

None of the 2002 medalists are part of the Assam-bound squad, but Goa is hoping for medals from the perennial hopefuls taekwondo and an inspired boxing team. Out of the 31 disciplines on show, Goa will participate in six - athletics, football (women), taekwondo (women), boxing, sepaktakraw (men) and archery. Boxing and taekwondo, both of whom won medals at the Hyderabad Games, five years ago, will continue to shoulder Goa's medal hopes while the women's football team - coached by Seby Rodrigues - could pull off an upset if the likes of Maymol Rocky, Blanca Barreto, Sharon Fernandes, all internationals, get going. Steffi Cardozo's medal hopes will largely depend on how strong the field remains. Sepaktakraw - volleyball's complicated version - and archery will take solace from an improved performance. The withdrawal of our football team is absolutely disappointing, Goa Olympic Association secretary Gurudutta Bhakta told reporters during a briefing at the SAG headquarters, Panjim. Navin Acharya, Asistant Secretary (Programmes), has been named as Chef de Mission, but the flag-bearer will be decided only tomorrow. Indications are a medal-prospect from the taekwondo team may get the nod. We hope to do better than the seven medals we won in Hyderabad. The teams have been preparing in right earnest and we are hopeful of an extremely good show, maintained GOA president and Minister for Panchayats Subhash Shirodkar. Shirodkar was initially marked to attend the opening ceremony but has now changed plans. I will go for the closing ceremony, Shirodkar told reporters. Digambar Kamat has now been penciled to attend the National Games though there was no confirmation as yet. Director of Sports Dr Susana de Souza, SAG treasurer Mario Pinto and Arjuna awardee Brahmanand Shankwalkar will also make their presence felt in Guwahati, what with Goa set to host the 2011 National Games. Dont worry! Go the words of an old song. Yes, we all want to be happy, we try any secret formula of happiness that worldly wisdom promises as sure prescriptions of happiness. Yet we end up empty and worrying about what needs to be done. What shall we try next? Faith tells us that we need nothing to be happy, no riches, no wealth, no earthly possession, only God! Can God be our happiness? Have a satisfying weekend finding happiness in God alone! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Sixth Sunday In God alone we trust? 11-Feb-2007 Readings: Jeremiah 17: 5-8; Corinthians 15: 12,-16-20; Luke 6:17,20-26; In todays first reading Jeremiah speaks of the choice we have to make of living our lives with God or without God; trusting in him or trusting only in ourselves. Jeremiah describes the consequences of putting our trust only on our human resources. A man who relies on himself alone will waste his life; his live will be lost because there is nothing that will nourish him. On the other hand the man who relies on God will make his life fruitful. He will be like a tree by the waterside, which bears abundant fruit because it is nourished continually. In the words of the psalm: Happy is the man who has placed his trust in the Lord. Distrust if there is no God A certain gentleman came to Paris, as a senator from Southern France. He rented a room in a respectable hotel, and paid for it one month in advance. The owner asked him if he wanted a receipt. A receipt will be unnecessary, replied the senator, God has witnesses the transaction. What! Do you believe in God in this day and age? sneered the hotel manager. Why, most certainly, my friend, was the answer. Dont you? Not I, Monsieur. Ah, in that case, be so kind as to write me out a receipt. Frank Michalic in 1000 Stories You Can Use In his letter to the Corinthians Paul stresses that the resurrection is essential to the understanding of our redemption. Without the resurrection we would still be in our sins. Paul is not setting out an argument but developing the implications of his belief: those who would deny the resurrection of the dead, in so doing reject the resurrection of Christ. Now Christ has risen. To deny that would be to empty the faith of all meaning. The fact that Jesus rose from death proves that truth is stranger than fiction, that love is stronger than hatred, that good is stronger than evil, and that life is stronger than death. Blessed are the Poor! Years ago there was a movie called Quo Vadis. It starred Deborah Kerr and dealt with the persecution of Christians in ancient Rome. One day, after a dangerous filming session, a newspaper reporter asked Deborah Kerr, Werent you frightened when the lions rushed towards you in the arena? Deborah replied, Not at all! Id read the script, and I knew Id be rescued! Deborah Kerrs childlike trust in the stunt men assigned to protect her is a good illustration of the childlike trust that the poor had in God in biblical times. In other words, there are people who find themselves in the same position in which Deborah Kerr found herself during the shooting of the dangerous scene in the movie Quo Vadis. She knew that she was totally helpless. She knew she couldnt protect herself. So she stopped worrying and simply placed all her trust in the stunt men assigned to rescue her. In the same way, many of the poor in Jesus day stopped worrying and simply placed all their trust in God. Mark Link in Sunday Homilies Todays Gospel reading Jesus spells out the core of his teaching in the beatitudes. Jesus mentions four beatitudes here and four woes, but there are many more. Each of them goes against the worlds wisdom. Jesus contrasts two attitudes of the heart. He says that happy people are the poor, the hungry, the sad and those who were hated because of him. And the truly unhappy people are the rich, the full, the laughing, and those who have successfully curried the favour of the world. What was Jesus trying to say? Jesus never intended to call material poverty blessed. Jesus never intended to approve of the poverty that we see in the slums of our cities, and that he also saw in the cities of his times. Jesus was referring to those people without wealth, without influence, and without protection, who put all their hope and trust in God. Thus

* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * To Goa with Love - Three unique Valentine Day packages from EXPRESSIONS Say I Love You! in style this year For details, photos and pricing check out: http://www.goa-world.com/expressions/valentines/ from www.bbc.co.uk India reveals football goal By Matthew Kenyon BBC Sport in Delhi PM Manmohan Singh kicks-starts India's new NFL season A country of more than a billion people, but a national team ranked 157th in the world. The football equation in India does not add up. And yet in the 50s and 60s, India won gold medals at the Asian Games, finished fourth in the Olympics and even qualified for the World Cup. The problem is, that in a huge country, football is confined to a few regions. Calcutta (Kolkata), the former capital of British India, is the centre of the game. The Calcutta derby, Mohan Began against East Bengal, is a match to rival anything Rangers and Celtic can throw up. Goa has the bug, thanks to its previous rule by the Portuguese. But elsewhere, football comes in a distant second to cricket. As cricket grew, interest in football declined, says Novy Kapadia, India's top football writer. Fewer states were actively promoting the sport, so Indian football couldn't take advantage of the country's huge population, with the numbers supporting and playing the game dwindling. And there's been years of neglect in both infrastructure and youth development. Watching a second-tier game in the Delhi local league, it is hard to argue with that assessment. Fewer than 100 people have turned out to watch. The standard of play is poor, and so is the pitch. But there are plans to revitalise football in India. NK Bhatia, secretary of the Delhi Soccer Association, says his region has been chosen for a pilot project to be launched by Fifa and the All India Football Federation next month. Football will be restructured at the grassroots level, he says. We've already conducted coaching for our school teams, 45 teams participated at the ages of 10 to 13 and 13 to 16. And we'll conduct a college league, for youth development. After that we'll develop into a semi-professional league, and then into fully professional. Coaches, funded by Fifa and the Asian Football Confederation, will be placed with the clubs and every club in the Delhi league will have to have properly licensed trainers, and proper facilities at their grounds. A similar project is already underway in the state of Manipur. So that is the future, what about now? India's National Football League, which is only 11 years old in its current form, is getting a new boost from television. Zee Sports, a relatively new sports channel, has signed a 10-year deal with the AIFF to cover all Indian games and it plans to entice more viewers by offering a much slicker product. Ten years is a long time for a football contract, says Gary Lovejoy, the Chief Operating Officer of Zee Sports. The reason it is so long is that there is so much to do to develop the game here. There was little point in having Indian Football rights for just three years. Lovejoy is an Englishman who has worked in sports television for most of his career. He wants his product, visually at least, to match the best that Europe has to offer. We want to make Indian football look decent in the face of the high-quality production standards you get from the Premier League, he says. We're now covering football with up to 13 cameras, whereas previously the rights holder in India had gone down to four or five cameras, which simply was not good enough. European leagues, and especially the Premiership, or EPL as it is known in India, are increasingly popular, especially with the young, urban middle classes. Lovejoy wants to tap some of that interest and convert it to the Indian game. The problem is that while the television coverage might be getting slicker, the standard of play in the Indian NFL is still far short of that served up by the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona. And outside the football hotbeds of Bengal and Goa the intensity of support is simply not there. Kapadia has a suggestion: There are many states in India which don't have a club culture, so allow them to field an XI which would have massive support because of regional pride. There are lots of plans to bring Indian football up to the standard to be expected of a nation of more than one billion people. They are all a long way from fruition, but do not think India is lost to football just yet. INDIA'S NFL TEAMS Mahindra United (Mumbai) East Bengal (Calcutta) Dempo Sports Club (Goa)

When we knew that RP2011 is bad for Goa, we forced the Govt. to de-notify it. Likewise, don't we know now all 40 MLAs are bad for Goa ? So, why wait until the coming elections? Don't you think it's time now to start another peoples movement called AHA (Amdar Hatao Andolan) ? It's the people who elected them, so, the same people should have the power to unseat them. Lets go the daring Kundaim villagers way, where they unseated the entire panchayat (giving them deadline to resign) I can see that this is the only way to get rid of all dirty MLAs/Ministers. If we wait until the coming election, I can clearly see that at least 30 of them coming back to power. Some of them dont depend much on Goans votes as their main vote bank is bhaile or Voile. Do you really think all this RP2011, Church or Archbishop Xermao, GNM (Goyenche Niz Mogi) bashing etc will stop them to come back to power ? You must be joking. The controversial ex-TCP minister, what about him ? Will he not come back ? He is coming back 'dolle dampun' (that's talk of the town) Remember, they still have 3 or 4 months too woo or buy voters. That would be too disfiguring and as you say it would hinder a career change. Assuming of course that Frederick's new career demanded that he bare his chest in pursuit of his duties. All I was thinking of was those 'washable in 24 hour' tattoos that could be erased after the semi-annual beach walk. If the Colva jaunt would involve transportation and loss of time to the extent of Rs 2000, then I shall up the ante to Rs 4000 annually. Or if that is too troublesome for Frederick then I am flexible enough to allow for dropping off the Colva idea entirely and restrict it to Calangute alone. After all our Mario does not live too far away from Calangute and he might sympathetically decide to join him with a temporary tattoo of his own saying Bush for Basra or There is no Global Warming. If Carmo wasn't in faraway Velim he might make it a threesome with Manohar for Mess (the IIT one of course) or Parrikar for Prime Minister. Now Frederick I mean no disrespect in lumping you with the witless proletariat but I know you can walk with as much panache with them as you would along with the intellectually engaging. Cecil, I am quite moved with your offers of great humiliations and sacrifices in order to aid charities, but I must decline on grounds of insufficient funds. You see, I have just purchased a very big screen LCD TV to please the missus and I really didn't know what I was in for. After the change of service provider that was necessitated for high-def service and the setting up of a home theatre system by a professional audio expert and the renovation of basement that became necessary to accommodate the acoustics, all taken together with the dues that we in Canada have to pay to the taxman, I am well and truly impoverished for the next two years. This will not preclude me from contributing my widow's mite to Goan causes that come along courtesy Gerorge Pinto and others, but it surely prevents me from sponsoring your walks and runs for substantial recompense, without the aid of other donors which you have expressly forbidden. With the temperature these days at minus 25C, I have also to pay for vats of brandy which will further decimate my already vulnerable finances. Saude ani sussego as they say in Socolvaddo Assagao, Roland. On 2/4/07, Cecil Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Roland, I notice Frederick has not taken up your offer and I don't blame him. For Rs. 1,50,000/- I will ride a motorcycle, non-stop and in the daytime, from Pernem to Canacona on 24th June 2007 attired in nothing other than a kashti. For Rs. 1,00,000/- I will balance a large book on my head and walk from Pharmacy College to Immaculate Conception church. Please indicate which of the above options is closest to your budget and inclination. If you have even bigger budgets in mind (as an individual - please don't try to rope in other donors) I can think of even more spectacular and absurd actions. As long as the money is going for a good cause I don't mind a little temporary embarrassment.

And, at this point of time, it's a reality that hits you increasingly in the face. At the time of writing, Goa's telephone directory hasn't been published for at least four years. In a state with among the highest teledensities (phones per hundred users) across India, this is a serious handicap. Add to this the reality that the telephone network here is frequently growing. And that telephone numbers have grown from four-digits to the current seven in not too many years. An online Goa telephone directory of BSNL -- the long-dominant player in the landline market -- is located at the hardly human-friendly URL of http://210.212.176.226/namesearch.php?selssa=GOA But finding phone numbers through this source is likely to be a time-consuming affair. Government of Goa's Department of Information and Publicity (located at Udyog Bhavan, near Azad Maidan and the Goa Police Headquarters in the heart of Panjim) comes out with a fairly-regularly unpriced -- but not easily available -- pocketbook of phone numbers. This focusses largely on politicians, goernment officials and media persons. Some useful fax numbers, email addresses and websites mentioned here. The evidence of Bernado's anonymous (and untraceable) Indian Army officers, revealing rigging plots by the Indian Government (plots that apparently backfired badly, judging by the true election results), was backed by Gabriel's equally anonymous source, and now Bernado has produced (through micheal [?] britto) an equally anonymous Punjabi special security officer during the 1963 elections in Goa. Bernado's Micheal reveals that the ballot boxes were sealed, the ballot boxes were broken open, forged ballots were then substituted for the real ones, and the boxes were sealed again. Apparently, when the boxes were opened again for the last time, Bandodkar popped out of them as chief minister! Dear Bernado, we are quite mystified. If what your source micheal (does he always mispell his own name, or is that the real spelling?) says is true, why did Bandodkar have to run in a special election so he could assume the chief ministership? I have learned from many Goanetters, who are sticklers for accuracy, that that is how Bandodkar eventually became the first Chief Minister of Goa. Perhaps you could ask Micheal to ask his anonymous but very talkative Punjabi special services man to help you out; but if he refuses, perhaps you could find another anonymous source who can? No doubt many Goanetters loved Micheal's concluding lines: But he [the Punjabi] did have a final word - GOANS SHOULD fight for their right, otherwise India would destroy GOA - for its own benefit. Do I need to say more? WHEN WILL OUR GOANS REALISE THAT? ONLY GOD KNOWS? May I add that only God knows what Bernado will come up with next? Very best regards, Victor Rangel-Ribeiro

They focussed on the need to use Goa's inland waterways to lessen the burden of road traffic. Till date, nothing much has happened. In past decades, there were launch services between places like Panjim and Sanvordem (with a halt at Ribandar), and another from Panjim to Naroa and Aldona. Studies show that out of a total length of 555 kms of important rivers in Goa, some 360 kms are navigable at present with varying depths. The Mandovi, Zuari rivers and their tributaries are navigable upto 169 kms. Some more navigable rivers include Terekhol to Arondem (upto 32 kms), Chapora to Colvale (32 kms), Mandovi (102 kms with branches, like the Madai, Khandepar, Sanquelim, Bicholim/Volvoi, Mapusa, Cumbarjua Canal), Zuari river (upto the Sanvordem bridge, 64 kms and upto Sanguem in high tides), Sal river (upto 18 kms), Talpona river (9 kms), Galgibaga river (5 kms). Even in colinial times, eight motor-launches were run under the Navigacao fluvial. These connected Panjim to Sanvordem (stopping at Ribandar, Old Goa, Cumbarjua, Kundaim, Dongri, Marcaim, Undir, Durbhat, Borim, Rachol, and Sanvordem); Panjim to Volvoi (via Ribandar, Old Goa, Piligao and Surla); Panjim to Aldona (stopping at Borim, Bando, Ecoxim, Pomburpa, Amadi and Calvim); Panjim to Verem and Panjim to Mormugao. If inland waterways are properly harnessed, they will provide a quick, comfortable and economical transportation facilities for both passengers and cargo traffic, said the Report of the House Committee on Remedial Measures to Improve Transport System in Goa (1994).
