Cornel's making a further point re: subaltern brings me to the writing of one
of the world's leading proponent of such studies, Prof. Gayatri Chakravorty
Spivak. For those who want to learn more, her writings are a must read. As a
professor at Columbia University, she has come to be known as the critic of
postcolonialism and her translation of Derrida's Of Gramatology is a noted work
of scholarship. She has also provide her views on subjects such as
deconstruction, feminism, and Marxism. Reading her Can the Subaltern Speak?, a
brilliant essay, should be a good start.

Goa may have been adjudged the best amongst India’s
small states as far as Health care facilities but the
ground reality is far from true. The state’s main Goa
Medical College hospital is in utter doldrums with no
bed-sheets and the Trauma ward itself in a very
traumatizing state.

The Ribandar Health Centre on the outskirts of Goa’s
capital Panaji has no basic health care facilities in
place and is functioning without even a thermometer.
There is no water supply and obviously no toilet. The
only medical equipment at hand is a stethoscope and a
blood pressure apparatus.

The authorities should stop fooling the “Aam aadmi”.
The Health Centre at Ribandar is a classic example of
how the people are sort to be taken for a ride.

DUBAI — Roger Azavedo fired a hat-trick to help Aldona
United to a crushing 5-0 victory over new comers
Marriott Boys (Armona) in their Group C match of the
4th Goa inter-village football tournament for the
Pehla Cup at the Iranian Club stadium yesterday.

Dias, who was later voted man of the match, struck
twice in the first-half and added the third on
resumption. He also had a hand in the other two goals
netted by Andrew Dias in the second-half.

A late strike by Sunny Naik, meanwhile, earned Navelim
Clipsal a hard-fought 1-0 win against Goa Velha Al
Zuari in the second match of the day.

Aldona United virtually dominated the proceedings as
their opponents struggled to find their rhythm.
Marriott Boys made two changes after the break with
Stanley Noronha and Russel D’Souza coming on for
Godfrey Fernandes and Aaron D’Souza. The changes
brought some energy into Marriott Boys’ side but
failed to make any decisive breakthrough.

Goa Velha took the early initiative to create a host
of openings in their opponents’ half.

Him Mannkam tiatr
billed as top notch in UK

HERALD NEWS DESK

PANJIM, SEPT 22— After a string of successful Lenten
operas in Konkani that were staged all over Goa under the aegis of Pilar Music
Academy in the past few years, Fr Lucas Rodrigues a priest of the Missionaries
of St. Francis Xavier, staged yet another masterpiece in Him Mannkam Konnank
Zai — this time in England, under the banner of Pilar Fathers, (UK).

The drama billed as one of the top-notch tiatrs to be ever staged in London,
lived up to its
expectations, with those involved giving an excellent account of
themselves,states a release.

The cast included stalwarts of the Konkani stage, both from Goa and those from
London who have
steadfastedly kept the spirit and flag of Konkani high in this part of the
world.

The story revolves around two industrious and conscientious families and the
responsibilities of their children towards their parents. It demonstrates how
young people afflicted by the lure of unbridled lust for riches end up
maltreating their parents, verging on disowning them, only to realise their
folly at a stage when they arrive to a point of no return.

Mary Alphonso as the devout and simple housewife, Maria; Lawrence Mascarenhas
as her hardworking and dedicated husband, Malcohm; Jr. Nelson (Tommy) as their
educated but overly ambitious son, Neal; Bella as equally educated but
discerning daughter, Tricia; and Fr. Lucas as the insecure but determined
handicapped son Jos were sterling in their performances. On the other hand,
Kezia Carvalho as the scheming, American-educated, riches-obsessed young
daughter, Leena was flawless in her acting. Her father’s persona as a suave
gentle and compassionate doctor, was charactered most effectively by
Johnny Alphonso.

The rib-tickling comedy was supplied by the veteran comedian Ben Evangelisto
who was superbly complemented by talented Santan Fernandes and Judy
Fernandez.

The tiatr was interspersed with songs — solos and duets — based on varied
themes and topical subjects. Fr. James Pereira, Fr. Oliver Antao, Jose I Rod,
Dom Moniz, Francis D’Silva and Rosy D’Silva enthralled the audience with the
various songs. Akki Brown remembered the late legendary maestro Chris Perry for
his work in Konkani music and later sang one of his memorable compositions on
the fate of Goans with élan.

At the Wembley and Swindon shows, a noted singer from Goa, (Fantasy and
Cascades fame) now based in Dubai, Divina
Braganza e Moraes who was incidentally holidaying in London, made a special
appearance. She
regaled and the audience with her rendition of two songs on the occasion.

On the subject of Diaspora Goans, Merwyn's posting of Prof. Narendra Wagle's
piece has thrown some light on the multicultural aspects of Canada.
Canada has been a model for multicultarism, a model that even Australia sought
to imitate. However, Australian multiculturalism policy has underone many
changes, often depending on the political party in power.
At a recent conference in Canada, held annually to discuss public policy, the
subject was The Stranger Next Door: Making Diversity Work. It looked at
multiculturalims from the standpoint of today's global terrorism.
One of Canada's foremost journalists, Haroon Siddiqui, Editor Emiritus of The
Toronto Star, wrote in his column, under the heading, Multiculturalism is a
success story, so stop whining that None of this is to say that some
Canadians of this or that ethnic or religious minority may not pose a security
risk, only that it is facile to link it to multiculturalism and diversity.
Nor is it to say that the public has no right to be scared. As Tariq Ramadan,
the foremost Muslim European thinker and a professor at Oxford University, told
the delegates: Being scared is not a matter of opinion. It is a state of mind.
But in addressing it and tackling the challenges that we do face in integrating
250,000 immigrants every year, we need to be rational and avoid turning on
minorities or multiculturalism.
The multicultural model has, in fact, been a great success, and Canadians know
it, even if critics don't, said pollster Michael Adams, author of an upcoming
book, Unlikely Utopia: The Surprising Triumph of Canadian Pluralism.
I have one problem with Wagle's writing and that his repeating the old lie
that Konkani is a dialect of Marathi.
Here is what the distinguished sociologist John Rex says about Canada’s
approach to multiculturalism, Canadians sometimes suggest that they have much
to teach other countries who face severe problems of ethnic conflict. Perhaps,
indeed, they do, but... they will have more to teach if they do not base their
case on a somewhat simplistic model of the support of ethnic minorities on a
purely cultural level.
No doubt there are conflicts and tensions in Canadian multiculturalism but
Canada has managed to control its diversity. In this context, I would like to
further illustrate the problem between the Goan Overseas Association and the
CanOrient Christian Association. In the late 70s and early 80s, the christians
of Pakistani origin found they were treated as second-class by the christians
from Africa. The conflict was not open but there were obvious hurt feelings
among the Pakistani christians, mostly Goans.
They found it convenient to organize themselves into another association,
though they had come together as a association in Montreal. During the 70s and
80s, the number of Goans directly from India were few and many did not find it
worthwhile to be members of the GOA. They even ridiculed the GOA as Goans of
Africa association.
The GOA's character began to change in the early 1990s. Even though I served as
an executive member in 1988 and 89, I was often asked by fellow Bombay Goans
how I can sit together with the African Goans who displayed arrogance and kept
Goans from India at arm's length distance.
As Wagle mentions, the relations between the CanOrient and GOA improved later
on, especially in the late 80s and throughout the 90s with a move afoot to
amalgate both the associations. Even a draft constitution was drawn up but the
idea was shot down by the GOA general meeting as it required changing the GOA
constitution to give voting membership to associate members. Non-Goans are
allowed to be associate members of the GOA. It must also be noted that there
are many Goans with cross-memberships, though more of the CanOrient members who
are also members of GOA.
Now and then the subject of multiculturalism takes centrestage in Canada. This
is particularly true during the debat on Canada's immigration policy which
undergoes changes with changing times. Canada is also famous for its struggle
with its national identity. Multiculturalism has its own supporters and critics
among Canada's intellectual community. Even a famous writer such as Neil
Bissoondath, nephew of VS Naipaul, has criticized Canada's multiculturalism in
his famous book, Selling Illusions: The Cult of Multiculturalism.
He is one well-known exception among the

When this ‘Ravindra Bhavan (Margao) will be ready?

More than four years ago, the work on the Ravindra Bhavan was commissioned by
the then Art Culture Minister (now Chief Minister) Digambar Kamat..

In July 2006, the same minister said in the assembly that it would be ready by
December 2006.

Now (22/9/07), the same Minister (Chief Minister) says that he ‘Expects’
Ravindra Bhavan to be ready by October 30, 2007. He also says that he is
unable to set any deadline for the completion of the project but expects the
Bhavan to be certainly commissioned this year (which means up to December end
2007).

It is a mutli-crore project of Rs.16.65 crore (July 2006)

The same now expected to cross Rs.18 crore i.e. Rs.1800,00,000

Such milti-crore projects always taking longer time than necessary,
probably, due to lot of under-hand dealings or corruptions.

It's Chak de Goa in the form of Hema Sardesai for all goans. This
Goan-born singer, who proudly claims herself to be belonging to this
coastal state, has sung evergreen hit ``BADAL PE PAON HAI'' in Chak de
India. The song is such a rocking hit that schools and colleges are
asking whether they can use it as their school or college anthem. Hema
spoke exclusively to ARES of daijiworld.com in Goa.

The excerpts:

How do you feel after success of chak de india?

I am most thankful to God. My gratitude goes towards Yashraj Films, the
brilliant writer of the film, Jaideep Sahani, Director, Shimit
Amin, music directors, Salim Sulieman, the media, and all my Fans. Yes I
am elated and full of gratitude. It is sooo wonderful to see so much
love in the eyes of all the kids and young girls when they look at me
due to them loving BADAL PE PAON HAI so much. I am just so grateful.

How far it is important for you to get associated with Yashraj banner?

I am proud to be associated with such a prestigious banner and thank
Yashraj films for the respect given to me throughout.

Were you expecting the song to be such a hit?

I am so humbled that God has made every single song of mine a hit and
every album too. God forgot to add the word flop to my life. Therefore
my entire life and my soul too belongs to God and I will do everything I
can to serve mankind to prove my gratitude.

How do you rate it compared to awara bhavren?

Whichever of my song, although a hit, gets great publicity, it becomes
so much more special to one and all. So I owe that to the media that is
why I will always hold the media close to my heart and am so thankful.

Being Goan do you favour cricket or hockey as a game?

My husband played Hockey upto the Nehru cup, and my Dad has been the
cricket captain in Goa. So both the games are very close to me. But the
truth is I am ardently watching only when India is winning which is not
really a fair thing to do but I guess that's the mad side of me.

Do you think that the movie will be booster for hockey in India?

It sure is a booster not only for hockey but other games and our lives
overall. Such movies prove that patriotism and hard work wins so it
completely puts down statements that say 'sex sells'. Hope the people
who resort to making vulgar and obscene movies learn a lesson from the
super success of Chakde India.

How did you feel when you saw the picturised song?

I had sung the song seeing the images so I could pour the right emotion
and right youthful requirement in it with Salim's inputs.

what are your future projects?

My greatest achievement right now is the release of my rock album JHOOM
dedicated to my Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji of Art of living. The video
'POWER OF LIFE, is completely focused on the SAVE THE GIRL CHILD ISSUE
and my entire earnings for the album will go towards the cause. The Tips
music Company is releasing the video this month on all the channels.

The song is already a proclaimed Hit at the International Woman's
conference this year. Thank you God Thank you all you lovely people.
