All for one, and one for all. Lets hear these replies, but firstly the
accusers must bring some proof of misdeeds by the accused, it is not right to
simply accuse someone who has either done no wrong, or is unable to answer the
critic if they are not au fait with the subject. It is only fair to give this
a proper airing here in Goanet.

Dear Floriano,

I love your 'Mangaldass' English, e.g. below . I believe
that bluntness brings out the real in a person...! Huh??

As the current Orbit ad goes It is a true !!

Not to mention the brilliant obfuscation of your last para...

Your dialogue is straight out of 80's Bollywood - like, yo,
almost as if you/Goa Suraj wrote this classic exchange
from the '82 movie Namak Halaal! Remember? The scene
is the one in which Amitabh (Arjun Singh) is introduced to
Ranjeet by Ram Sethi for the first time in the movie..

Ranjeet: Yeh sab to theek hai, magar angrezi-vangrezi
  aati hai ya nahi.
Amitabh: E lo kar lo baat. Arre aisi angrezi ave hain ke
I know such english that I can leave angrez
behind. I can talk english, I can walk english,
I can laugh english, I can run english, because
english is a phunny language. Bhairon becomes
Byron and barren becomes Bhairon because
their minds are very narrow! In the year 1929,
when India was playing Australia at the Melbourne
stadium Vijay Hazare and Vijay Merchant were
at the crease. Vijay Merchant told Vijay Hazare
Look Vijay Hazare! This is a very prestigious
match and we must consider it very prestigiously!
We must take this into consideration, the consider-
ation that this is an important match and ultimately
this consideration must end in a run!
Ranjeet: O.K., O.K., O.K.!!
Amitabh: In the year 1979 when Pakistan was playing
against India at the Wankhede stadium Wasim
Raja and Wasim Bari were at the crease and
they took the same consideration. Wasim Raja
told Wasim Bari Look Wasim Bari! We must
consider this consideration and considering that
this is an important match we must put this
consideration into action and ultimately score a
run! And both of them considered the
consideration and ran and both of them got out!
Ranjeet: Oh shut up!!
  ..
Om, Shanti, Om!

[Goanet] Korea torpedo Bharat!

2007-11-02 Thread Bernado Colaco
Once again at the Taipa stadium, Korea torpedoed Bharat the former 5 time
Olympic hockey champions 7-4 in a pulsating game. Korea led 3-2 in the first
half. Bharat then equalised in the second half. But some precision passing and
striking capacity put the Koreans well ahead in the game. A vociferous bharat
desi crowd in Macau did not help to lift their team.

One must note that the Koreans started playing hockey in the mid eighties when
they held the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Today they are a march above their famous
rivals ie. Bharat and Pakistan.

In any situation, minorities do need protection. Under the circumstances
should not the Hindus in the North-East and in Jammu Kashmir get some

Secondly, I do not understand why education institutes run by members of the
minority community should be treated differently from those run by the Hindus.
Education is a secular issue, and the same rule should be applied to all.

nor is it a crime in secular societies. What law or
religious dictat prevents you from eating your dead

Santosh,
A cannibal does not eat his enemies for nutritious value.
Cannibals eat their enemies for two main reasons:
1) To scare the sh't out of those enemies that escape.
2) To make sure that the enemies children and grand children do not think of
returning.

Twenty years ago a plane crashed in the Andes killing 10 people of different
nationalities and leaving another 10 alive. Faced with starvation, after a few
days the survivors started eating those who were dead. Faced with the same
situation, I would have no problems doing the same. Letterman had this joke at
the time. Here is the scenario, the starving survivors had to decide what to
eat. If they wanted to eat French, there was French. If they felt like Chinese,
there was Chinese, etc. etc.

My point being it feels disgusting to eat your enemy when you have a choice.
When you don't, it is a necessity.

Having heard Dinesh for a good 90 minutes, I have to
grudgingly correct my earlier pronouncement of him as
a drone. The man is intelligent and definitely gave
the more cerebraly equipped Hitch, a run for his
money. Besides, he's a Goan and as always I am proud
of any Goan that achieves prominence, especially in a
white male-dominated society.

Since I am neither a theist, deist or an atheist, I
hold all those domains with equal skepticism. However,
one cannot fault Hitch on his most fundamental
premise, that religion cannot in any way be construed
as having been divinely inspired. And I agree with him
that, perpetuating it on innocent children is almost
criminal.

I think his response to the Fijian man was most
appropriate. If religion was indeed guided by the hand
of God, or the word of God, then its inequitable
dissemination, belies any justice on the part of this
God. Either he is apathetic to some societies or
unable to reach them due to some connectivity problem.
Which goes back to what Khushwant Singh has been
saying for eons, given God's total indifference he is
either not omnipotent or omniscient.

Hi Mervyn
I too visited Cuba and found much to commend about it---but then, I am a
left-winger. But I also believe in criticising things too. For example, I was
genuinly surprised that there was so little public transport by way of bus
provision across the main cities and people would wait for anything like three
or more ours to travel between destinations with which I became familiar. Yes,
I know about the famed health service and Cuba's offer, including to the USA in
a crisis but I wish there were more buses! As I happened to travel by private
taxi all over, and there always was spare capacity, I instructed each driver to
pick up passengers en route and drop them appropriately. Such people were most
grateful to a tourist like me and I wish they did not have to rely on my kind
of 'charity and generosity'.

Just one small other point, I noted how much Cuba was like the Soviet Union
that I had driven around for three weeks in 1968 including the distinctive
smell of the petrol and the rationing system for petrol as well as the
friendliness of the people. As to the health system in America, I can't wait
for Hillary to make it.

Edwin J. F. D' Souza (the present Executive Director of Institute of
Konkani, St Aloysius Autonomous College, Mangalore, and Editor of
Amar Konkani, a research journal) for a term of 5 years starting
January 1, 2008.

Bab Pundalik Naik has been awarded the Sahitya Puroskar by the Kala
Academy, Panaji, for his novel in 1975-76 and is a well known and
respected writer in Goa. During his current stint as the President of
GKA, the publication of Konknni books in Roman script have received a
boost that was sorely lacking all these years after the enactment of
the Official language Act, 1987. Ironically, the OLA, 1987, was
supposed to have promoted Konknni but in reality created a deep schism
among the Konknni readers and writers. It is to Pundalik-bab's credit
that part of this damage has been undone.

The GKA and the Dalgado Konkani Akademi [DKA] have jointly hosted
events in recent times, an unthinkable thing even a year ago. That
Pundalik-bab has maintained cordial relationships with GKA Executive
Board member and DKA President, Tomazinho Cardoz, is a matter of joy
to Konknni lovers in Goa who would love to see the language flourish
without any chauvinism concerning the scripts. We hope that this
flavour finds expression at the Sahitya Akademi level and that the
Advisory Committee for Konkani has a fair representation for all the
three major scripts in which Konkani is written in the Konkan Aparant.
When our land is seamless, why do we need unseemly divisions in the
Konknni world?

We do hope the 97-member GC elects Pundalik-bab to the Executive Board
of the Sahitya Akademi, which consists of 25 members, so that he may
focus greater attention to the development of Konknni, that has
received recognition only in the last 32 years [since 26
February,1975] and been included in the VIII Schedule of the Indian
Constitution along with Manipuri and Nepali just 15 years ago [since
20 August,1992]. We wish him all the success.

Subject: FW: A Dreaded Forest Act
The Scheduled Tribes and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights)
Act, passed in Parliament in Dec 2006 is in the process of formally becoming
a law. Upto 4 hectares of forest land is proposed to be given to all those
who had occupied forest land before the 13th of December, 2005.

This Act is applicable to forest across the country - including wildlife
sanctuaries, national parks and tiger reserves. There are no provisions in
the Act to ensure forest protection / conservation. The Act opens forests to

Subject: [Goanet] Manohar Parrikar - Best CM Goa had ever

Goa made all round progress in short tenure under dynamic leadership
of Manohar Parrikar. In terms of Governance by BJP from Oct 2000 to
Feb 2005 Goa attained a top slot in all fields and was adjudged the
best and model state of India in Year 2003.

Comment: Goa did not have a continuous reign of Parrikar from 2000
[when he grabbed power with just 10 BJP MLAs and a docen turncoats!]
to 2005. It was a two term Govt. of a two-timing CM ...2000 to 2002
and 2002 to 28 January 2005 ...with a spell of administration by the
Governor of Goa. Parrikar, like Sardinha, has never lasted a full term
of 5 years ... or even till the end of one term like Luis Proto
Barbosa! And you call him the BEST ? Check to find out if your
definition of Best can be found in any Dictionary. INDIA TODAY
magazine does not even begin to have a statistical model to guage the
performance of a state. It is like the SMS voting for Indian Idol or
Voice of India ...and equally unreliable.

Liberalisation changed the Center State equation, starting with the
premiership of A.B.Vajpayee, states gained greater autonomy because of
political leverage at the center.

Comment: Was the Economics Professor and IMF guru, Dr. Manmohan Singh,
the Finance Minister of A.B. Vajpayee or of Narasimha Rao, dear?
Please check your GK.

It changed both business environment quality of life during
Parrikar?s efficient and dynamic administration. Goa had suddenly
turned into country?s growth engine.
During this period Goa attained overflowing investment because of
growth in environment infrastructure facilities which were more
accessible to new Ventures.

Comment: The over-flow was siphoned into the BJP coffers, I presume.
The quality of life changed for the worse, unless a walk on the Panaji
Promenade is cited as a positive attribute of health.

For instance Dr. Reddy's proposal to set up a formulation plant in Goa
was cleared just in 15 days and second example when pharma major Cipla
approached IDC chairman Rajendra Arlekar for expanding its Verna
plant, the company was told to start right away and IDC would clear
its paper work within a fortnight.

Comment: So also Cipla sister organisation, Meditabs Specialities Ltd
was given the Keri Plateau at Bhutkhamb -Ponda [vacated by Thapar
DuPont's Nylon 6,6 project at the BJP's instigation] by the BJP-led
Parrikar regime and the BJP cadres were busy taking the i-Pill to
abort the meditabs SEZ in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections last
month. What was the amount of the Speed Money paid to the BJP, dear?
Perhaps, they let you know the secret.

The credit for improved overall performance during BJP rule goes
undoubtedly to Parrikar for his far sightedness.

Comment: Performance as in a natak, I presume. Parrikar is a good
street actor.

During this spell Goa was freed from stagnation of power.

Comment: And Digamber Kamat was the Power Minister who achieved it ...
single-handedly according to Congressman Digu-baba [Meaning nagddo
according to the BJP campaign in Margao after he exposed its butt in
Jaipur.]

Liberated from past hands of rascals, rogues and free booters. For
many years Goa was misruled by corrupt Congress leaders who had sweet
tongues but crooked hearts, they fought among themselves for power due
to which Goa was lost in political squabbles.

Comment: This description fits the BJP when it was in power, too. The
Congressmen only offered to house the homeless BJP ex-Governor ... the
BJP offered dogs to the incumbent Governor of Goa. Uncouth, one would
think ...even if they were just BJP men ;-(

Along with power shift there was a change in political culture as most
efficiently shown by Parrikar as most progressive Chief Minister.
Goa had achieved political stability in contrast to having 12 Chief
Ministers in a span of a decade.

Comment: The same man becoming CM twice in 4 years is STABILITY? Are
you referring to stable as in gothra [cowshed], by any chance,
dear??

Parrikar himself a Metalurgical Engineer from IIT Mumbai was
instrumental in transforming Goa into Investment hotspot making it one
of the top Indian state.
It was Parrikar along with his BJP MLAs charted out an economic
blueprint for the state's resurgence with ambitious Industrial policy.

Comment: So why is the BJP agitating against the very SEZs that they
introduced to Goa ...washed down with the Morning after i-Pill? Did
the metallurgist suddenly realise that the Copper-T has more metal in
it and is equally effective??
I do not know about a blueprint but the BJP Government with
Parrikar as CM and Education Minister made a VCD about Goa's Freedom
Struggle that was close to being a bluefilm. O! Deva, Ramesh Deo-va!!
It almost brought a Hindutva resurgence. [Please note that Hindutva

Re: [Goanet] SG-MP - Election Results tomorrow

2007-11-02 Thread Goasuraj

The Goa Su-Raj Party wishes, with all its heart and might, that both the
Congress as well as the BJP candidates should lose in the just concluded SG-MP-
Elections to the two independents.

It would give this Party the greatest pleasure to celebrate if any one of the
Independents were to win.

But that could be 'wishful thinking' on our part.

But if it is, and a genie should suddenly appear from a (preferably a Feni)
bottle, and should the generous Genie offer us a wish between the Congress
and the BJP candidates (not the respective parties, mind you). We would
choose the BJP candidate Sr. Dotor Wilfred Mesquita over the hypocrite
Sardinha, not as a lesser evil, but just to see that the feet that Congress of
Goa stands on are sliced to smitherens.

It is said that given a choice between a Sindhi and a Cobra, one shud go for
the Sindhi (read Advani) first, and then tackle the Cobra at one's own sweet
time; likewise Sardinha should be struck first, to get at the corrupt and
equally or more communal Congress, first, and then tackle this opportunist
(not so gullible as we thought him to be) Sr. Dr. Wilfred Mesquita at our own
leisure.

The Goa Su-Raj Party hopes that the BJP WINS TOMORROW.

[Goanet] Voting pattern in Goa has changed over the years!

2007-11-02 Thread cedrico dacosta
Voting Pattern in Goa has changed over the years!

Goa has gained a notorious reputation due to its politicians and the game of
musical chairs that politicians have played so smoothly. There have been many
unwanted elections thrust upon the Goans. While some, specially the uneducated
voters see elections as a good means to make a fast buck, the educated Goans
are fed up of voting for the same faces all the time. One of the reasons for
the low voter turnout at the 2007 South Goa Parlimentary elections was that.

Both the candidates put up by the Congress and BJP represent the past tense of
Goan politics. While Sardinha does not have much to his credit of any
achievement done in the interest of Goa and was hence shown the door by his
constiuents at Curtorim. Dr Wilfred Mesquita has little reputation since
switching parties from MGP to Congress to BJP and SGF. How could the electorate
invest their precious votes to this type of politicians?

I was meeting a few prominent journalist friends at a dinner at Casa Goa in
Dubai, a journo friend argued that perhaps the glamour that would attract
peoples attention to come out and vote would have been Churchill Alemao's
daughter. I couldn't but disagree as the elections and the campaign had little
of the Alemao's hullabaloo and perhaps a young fresh new lady would have made
the voters come out in large numbers. But Valanka on the Congress ticket was a
complete no no...You dont make sense at all when the father of a daughter who
heads a regionl outfit goes with a begging bowl to a rival party to ask a
ticket for his daughter to contest the elections on their platform. But since
better sense prevailed there...let's get out of that issue.

Perhaps in the history of contemporary Goa, the voters decided that their lives
and work was more important than to go and get their fingr stamped after
casting their mot.

And it is very sad to see the pictures splashed on the local dailies...in the
serpentine ques of people lined up to cast their franchise, we hardly identify
any Goa in them but migrants...not the dress nor the people reflect the true
old Goan culture.

Is this the shape of things to come? Sadly yes! Goa and Goans should wake up to
another stark reality!

Every MLA is creating safe vote banks in their constituency of migrant voters.
I can vouch for Margao, where huge votebanks are created by some top
politicians, to ensure a smooth sailing at the hustings. The size of the
migrant votebank is so huge that the results are easily influenced.

Almost every village is seeing the formation of these slum colonies...true
Goans must be careful and observant and question the legality of such slum
areas being created by their representing MLA and question him at the time of
the elections.

That Goans are fed up with the habitual offenders in politics and not even
willing to come out and exercise their franchise is the shape of things to
come. Very soon, our elections will be decided by the migrants and seeing the
blessings they get from their saviours and god fathers, the day is not far when
our cities and villages will be represented by some unknown migrant.

My Margao will definately take the lead in that considering the amount of slums
that are created around Margao and the migrant colonies that one sees around
this comercial capital of Goa.

Once upon a time, the people had to wait for 5 long years to experience an
election, of late elections are made to look like a joke by these bunch of
jokers whom we call politicians.

And like I wrote earlier on this forumthe elections the way they were
placed and the candidated put up by the leading political partiesthe choice
was between the devil and the deep blue sea...

In a few hours from now we will see of Sardinha's flamboyence still charms the
ladies or Dr Mesquita's party hopping image is idolised by the 36 odd percent
voters that came out to cast their vote...the dice is rolled!

[Goanet] THE LAST TANGO IN GOA

2007-11-02 Thread vivek araujo
Dear Rene,

I just happened to go through hindustan times.com and
read the below article , thought of sharing it with

The last tango in Goa?

By HT
Saturday November 3, 12:49 AM
The feni-'n'-games are on schedule. Despite
thunderclaps that Goa would not be the venue for the
great big film festival any more, it is. From November
23, the beach land will be the host-with-the-most for
the 10-day-long 38th International Film Festival of
India - called IIFI by friends, well-wishers and
relatives.

So what was the snafu anyway? The relocation of the
annual event from the red-scotch-taped New Delhi to
chilled-out Goa happened nearly half-a-decade ago,
after much hair-and-hippy splitting by the Union
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Many eminent filmmakers - including Shyam Benegal -
felt that chaos and confusion were endemic to the fest
in the Capital. Goa would be sunny, it could be an
ideal spot for overseas delegates to gambol in
Bermudas and bikinis. And glory be, nephews of the
minister's third aunts wouldn't be tripping over
themselves to catch that Polish movie with the
geyser-hot scenes. For all that talk about access to
Internet porn, there's nothing like er, a body-room
scene in 35 mm, watched with 1,000 others. Talk of
group sex.

In principle, the shift from Delhi to Goa made sense.
But now, the snoop squad in the Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting is leaking info that the
fourth consecutive fest in Goa could well be its last
one - if the state co-organisers and the Entertainment
Society of God don't pull up their socks. Well and
#8230;who needs hosiery on the beach anyway? With all
its pros and cons, the Delhi-to-Goa shift has
registered some gains: no more
nephews-of-ministers'-aunts, no bureaucratic no-nos,
no winter to freeze your innards.

But come to think of it, most film festival-goers have
missed displaying their camphor-scented woolies at the
Siri Fort lawns over steaming tomato soup. The
rescheduling of the fest from Delhi in December-end to
Goa in November-end, has evoked mixed feelings.

How about some gaffe spotting? The December to
November shift was also calculated to entice better
entries, many more delegates, and of course, the cr
and #232;me de la cr and #232;me from the
international prize winners at Cannes, Berlin, Venice,
Bora Bora, and even Fukuoka, which incidentally is a
Japanese town and film festival.

Neither the entries nor the quantity or quality of
delegates have improved. Even the regular-as-rain
British critic Derek Malcolm has quit attending. In
addition, there have mega-gaffes like last year's
official brochure printing a picture of the cherubic
film-maker Girish Kasaravalli in lieu of the deceased
Kannada cinema legend Dr Raj Kumar.

For those who think of a glass as half full, Goa
promises to be a rocking fest. Those who think of a
glass as half empty, are already prepared that the
Bollywood star quotient will be on the lower side
(seriousness doesn't equal a Bipasha Basu bidi romp on
stage, like it did last year).

The Directorate of Film Festivals, led by Neelam
Kapoor, will be in command. Just some three months
ago, it was being conjectured that the directorate
would be wound up and the festival handed over to
more competent hands from the film industry in
Bombay. Sorry, Pahlaj Nihalani and Co. Indeed, it
seems to be some sort of an agni pariksha this year.
Whoever crosses the line - be it the directorate or
the Goa co-organisers - will be out. May the best
festival impressario win.

Now about the movies
The Indian Panorama entries have been announced. Samir
Chanda's Ek Nadia Galpo (Bengali) and Lenin
Rajendran's Night Rain (Malayalam) have been picked
from the 21 selected films to compete for the Golden
Peacock Award.
Only Latin-American, Asian and African movies are in
competition. Strange. Does this mean that if American
and European cinema were eligible, they would walk
away with our national bird?

Only two Hindi films have made it to the Panorama -
Dharm (no Eklavya, sob) and Sameer Hanchate's Gafla.
The ubiquitous Bengal director Buddhadeb Das Gupta
will be at Goa's Inox environs with a feature film as
well as a documentary on Naushad saab. Interesting,
interesting.

By the way, a documentary on Mubarak Begum features,
too, directed by Bipin Choubal. Adoor Gopalakrishnan
will be the man to catch, toast (he drinks beer only)
and hug for his new film and a documentary entitled
The Dancing Enchantress. There hasn't been a half a
word on the world cinema expected.

But yes, sources who think they are guarding nuclear
secrets reveal that a retrospective of Ingmar Bergman
and a section devoted to Hungarian cinema are on the
cards. Tributes will be paid at Goa to music legend
O.P. Nayyar, camera genius K.K. Mahajan and the
charismatic Marathi actress Vanmala, who passed away
this year. It's believed that a collection of films by
Senegal's politically volatile director, Ousman
Sembene, was offered on a platter but was

[Goanet] Kudos to Floriano

Dear Floriano:
I must admit that you have the courage to praise rajan
when everyone on goanet seems to have taken umbrage at
his posts...I am glad that you not only saw the
exhibition but you also talked to rajan

i am not a spokesperson for him but from my
interactions with him thru goanet I have realised that
he is one person who has the good of Goa at his heart

now that you have declared him patriot no 1 please
raise your voice against the likes of gadgil and
sabnis who seem to have taken up cudgels against Rajan
simply because of his politcs

i hope more people like you and rajan and others come
together to save goa from the hordes of ghantis

nights ago).

GL: You seem to do your home work well.

PD: Many, many of the writers (lovely, pacifist atheists) seemed to want to
respond physically to Dinesh's arguments.

GL: They do not believe in turning the other cheek ... or praying for the
adversary. Did I say praying?

---
PD: What really was revealing was that there were only a tiny handful of them
who praised Hitchens (or Hitch, as they lovingly call him). There seemed to
be a general sense of despond in the fact that their man let them down. A
couple of them said that Dinesh was the most formidable opponent that they have
had (the frequent references to us and our side gives me the impression
that they are as well organised as any other religion).

GL: The more I see it, the more I am amazed how paranoid atheists are. Yet, I
wonder why so they have a chip on their shoulder? To Hitch's credit, he called
Hitler anti-Christian and did not lump him as a Catholic fascist like Cornel
does.

PD: Dinesh didn't answer the Good Samaritan question well at all.

GL: Dinesh would have answered all the questions if he was given a chance.
Hitch resorted to rambling filibusters. While it was a tactic that was obvious
(and disliked), it is often used by atheists. I told more than one on Goanet,
that they make false statements; and then spend several paragraphs refuting or
disparaging the false statement.

When Dinesh got round to answer the question about the Good Samaritan,
Christopher shifted the argument from religion in general (of the Samaritan) to
Christianity. Then Dinesh (effectively) said that living in a religious
environment makes the non-believers also charitable (like giving blood) to
their fellow human beings. Dinesh continued you are following the tradition of
religions (of helping thy neighbor) without giving credit to where you got
those moral values. (you can see the debate again for this point). I think
this is a good point. In the western world there is no shortage of voluntary /
free kidney donors from total strangers. While in India there is no shortage of
kidney donors ... but for a price.

[Goanet] Black beat white in debate!

2007-11-02 Thread Bernado Colaco
If it were in the uk the debate between Dinesh and Hitch would called the black
vs white debate. In this case 'black' was superior to white. He has more
knowledge and came back strongly every time the 'white Johnny Walker used
rhetoric.

Dinesh has learned a lot since his anti-portuguese stance. He pronounced well
on the values of Christianity. He is in fact living in a country which ONCE
upheld these values.

Helekar as usual has debunked the debate. Can he rise to a similar level as
Dinesh?

[Goanet] Big personalities make Goan politics interesting, feels Vaz

2007-11-02 Thread Sanny de Quepem
Big personalities make Goan politics interesting, feels VazMr
Keith Vaz, a British MP of Goan origin, is a regular visitor to the
state. Agnelo Pereira of ‘The Navhind Times’, spoke exclusively to the
Labour Party leader on a range of issues, including Goan politics. The
excerpts:
How
do you visualise Goa’s politics? You were prominently sighted at the
Congress public meeting for the recent by-election. Do you have any
preferences? Politics
in Goa is fascinating, as is all politics. But Goan politics is
particularly interesting because of personalities. One thing you have
got here is big personalities and they have their own individual
following. Yes it’s a party system. But here a lot of local factors
come into play. I
am not a supporter of any particular party. I merely popped in for the
Congress meeting the other day. I am interested in views and opinions
and that’s how it works in Britain. I am a tourist here (laughs).
As
a British politician, I am keen to see stability. I can’t say about Goa
but in Delhi there is a stable government. A stable government is very
important if you want to do business with people and with international
partners.
Having
been in politics since the age of 20, I feel it’s good to look into
different systems. I have just come back from Washington. Ms Hillary
Clinton is a hugely popular figure there and would probably end up to
be the next president of America.
Why
do you think not many UK nationals prefer Goa as a tourist destination?
Do you think more needs to be done to project Goa as tourist location?
I
am surprised with that. Because I feel Goa is a big tourist
destination. I have noticed many new communities flocking to Goa, which
I had not seen two or three years ago. I have seen a lot of Russians
coming to Goa. If they have the money and choose to spend, than India
is one of the best place and Goa, the best. In my opinion Goa is one of
the best tourist destinations in the world.
Can you tell us something about your
scholarship offer to Goans? The
scholarship of 1,000 UK Pounds (approximately Rs 80,000) was instituted
in the name of my late mother who was a teacher. The idea evoked
tremendous response. In the first year (last year) we spotted a
teacher. She spent three months in a school in Leicester, completed her
course and returned back to Goa.
This
year it will be slightly different. We are going to expand the
disciplines. We will opt for anyone who has an original idea, of what
they like to do in England to further their career and therefore
further Goa. It will help them to realise what they want to do and how
they are going to help Goa and finally help themselves. But they are
going to use the scholarship in someway to come back to Goa and thereby
benefit not just themselves but also the state. It could be a teacher.
It could be a doctor. Or it could be someone who says he’s got a place
in the medical college and therefore would wish to apply for the
scholarship. So we are trying to spread the net wider. Seriously we
would like someone who has completed a degree.
You have been in politics for almost two decades in UK. How
would you compare the politics in India and Britain?
I
think the Lok Sabha is a little bit noisier than the House of Commons.
We have got 15 Asian parliamentarians in UK, including three from
Pakistan. The Lok Sabha and the House of Commons is sort of different
in styles but not in terms of goings-on. We have only one tier of
elected government, unlike India which has two. The numbers of
parliamentarians are more or less the same in the two countries. The
percentage of Asians has gone up a lot.
What about the stand of India and UK vis-à-vis its economy? Do
you think India and UK can share a common economic perspective?
Huge.
But I think we make a big mistake in the United Kingdom when we talk
about threat from India and China. This is a big lost opportunity to
the UK. Some of the policies that we have adopted as far as the
emigration is concerned obviously will let in European Union people on
priority as they are the citizens of Europe.
I
feel we missed the opportunity of actually doing more and we need to
look carefully at how we deal with immigration with India, which is
basically what we call highly-skilled, capable people who want to come
for a while. It’s a pity, since we have such a strong relation with
India. We should have been more supportive then we have been in the
past. India is not a threat. It’s a bonus to have India and the links
we have with India. I feel post 9\11 more Indians have come to the UK
then to the US.
The
recent racial slur against Bollywood star, Shilpa Shetty on national
television rattled the Europeans more than may be the

It appears that the good point the above statement
is trying to make is that it is not just religion that
makes someone good, but it is the right kind of
western religion, which coincidentally happens to be
that of Gilbert. Poor Indians practice the wrong
religion - evidently a less moral one.
