Mining cutting sharply into tiny Goa, says new environmental report

FN

PANJIM, Goa: Tiny Goa, one-thousandth the size of India,
contributes 15 percent of iron ore produced from the entire
country, and is paying the price for this, India's prime
environmental watchdog group has warned.

Goa mining an ecological disaster. The state needs stronger
regulations to manage mining in the backyard of people's
homes, farms and forests, said the New Delhi-based Centre
for says latest CSE 'State of India's Environment' study.

This citizens' report focuses on mining, focuses
significantly on issues arising out of Goa, and was released
here at a special function by Governor S.C.Jamir this week.

In Goa, it's the China factor (that's pushing up the demand
for iron ore phenomenally and prices too), said Ms Narain,
speaking at the release of the book. Goa mirrors what's
happening in the rest of India (but a bit more sharply), she added.

Economic growth is very important, but at what cost, she
added. Coming down hard and fast with figures, Narain noted
that mining was creating a shrinking number of jobs, due to
mechanisation.

Because of the density of population in India, it was but
natural that more people were being affected here, she added.
Yet, across India, data was lacking on the number of people
affected by mining.

In Goa, mining was happening in the backyards of people,
Narain said, referring to the activity that is concentrated
in the interior part of the state, and largely hidden from
the touristic coastal belt.

Ms Narain argued that the plethora of laws meant to
regulate mining, was only making the regulation
ineffective. She suggested that a few but effective laws and
agencies dealing with mining would be better.

She acknowledged that mining was needed, but of a kinder
nature. Narain called for a moratorium of mining in
biodiversity areas, and stressed that workable compliance
mechanisms were essential while regulators be given teeth.

Mineral Foundation of Goa's Shreedhar, an industry
body which offers socio-economic projects in mining
affected areas, praised the book, but said it
should have included some positive aspects of
mining. He blamed illegal mining for the
industry getting a bad name in Goa.

But his promise for building a four-lane bridge over a Goa
river, and de-silting a 12-km river, were later questioned by
local green campaigners. Salesian brother Philip argued the
bridge was meant for mining trucks, and challenged the
industry to clear major rivers like the Mandovi and Zuari
that turn muddy red in part of the year due to mining rejects
washed down their course.

Goa Mineral Foundation (GMF) has also offered eco
regeneration projects, including in watershed projects.

But villagers, present for the meet, made impassioned pleas
about their damaged ecology.

Said Salvador Dias of Columb: Even politicians are involved
in doing mining (illegally). When we protest, the police
threaten us. We see tigers in our village areas, because the
natural habitat is getting demolished.

Suhas Prabhudessai narrated how mining rejects had damaged
his property, making him go to the lower court, the high
court and the supreme court. I don't know how long I can
keep doing this, he complained, and said property built up
over generations was being finished.

Almost in tears, a rustic woman, Milagrine said mining
operations were blocking their access to their fields, and
'goondas' and police were sent in to break up protests. They
come along and catch our kids too, she said, speaking after
the book release.

Goa-based environmentalist Dr Claude Alvares, whose campaigns
since the mid-seventies have created a generation of talented
green youngsters here, made an emotional speech. He said:
How do we restore even 1 hactare of forests, in one of the
12 ecology hotspots in the planet (the area around Goa)?
Forests don't grow out of compensatory afforestation.

He pointed to spiralling iron-ore prices, and said the
industry was polluting Goa's rivers, fields, wildlife and
watersheds. This is not a sustainable industry at all, said he.

Even if Goa has smaller scale mining (compared to big
states), its impact is more because it is 'backyard mining',
said Narain.

This just-released report disputes the contention that
mining is essential for growth or employment. CSE says its
data shows that some of the least developed and most polluted
regions of the country are mining hotspots.

Called 'Rich Lands Poor People', the report from the network
founded by the prominent Indian environmental late Anil
Agarwal recommends that mining must not be allowed without
the consent of the people and if the environmental and social
costs outweigh its economic gains.

Some figures thrown up by the report: With less
than 0.1 per cent of the geographical area of the
country, Goa already has 8 per cent of its land
  area under mine leases and

Remembering The Apostle of Peace, Non-Violence
by Nandkumar Kamat

ALMOST three generations have witnessed a transforming India after the
brutal assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948 at 5.17 p.m. His
60 th death anniversary is an important day for the whole world which faces
two interesting situations-the threat of global warming and the rising wave
of mindless terrorism. Gandhiji had correctly predicted such a state of
affairs. Mahatma Gandhi became a martyr for the noble cause of peace. No
mass leader of modern times has combined politics with spirituality so
effectively to become a powerful moral force. A senior IAS officer, V.
Ramamurthy, after retirement wrote a beautiful series of articles- Mahatma
Gandhi- The last 200 days in Chennai's The Hindu from July 15, 1997 to 30
January 1998.

These have been published as a collection in the compendium-from the pages
of The Hindu. About the 200 th day, the last day in Mahatmaji's life-
Ramamurthy has written- Barrister, servant of society, relentless toiler
for the freedom of his people, non violent crusader for amity and peace, and
pillar of the Indian national congress, Gandhiji had been working on a draft
revised constitution for the party almost endlessly. The work had left the
frail man of 107 pounds severely exhausted. On January 29, 1948 he had told
his associates, I am very tired. Yet I must finish this task. Gandhiji
was actually writing a detail plan - a roadmap of recasting the Congress
party and empowering the people from the grassroots. Gandhiji wanted to
disband the existing congress organization and convert it into a Lok Sevak
Sangh. But this did not happen after his death. In reality the Indian
Parliamant took 45 years after his death to consider some concessions to the
grass roots after passing the 73 rd and 74 th amendments to the
constitution.

But even these are yet to be implemented in letter and spirit. Ramamurthy
has captured the final moments of Mahatmaji- Friday, January the 30 th ,
began on the calendar from the midnight hour. Gandhiji's working schedule
had him out of bed a just over three hours later. He completed his morning
preparations, composed his troubled mind, and said his morning prayer.
Ramamurthy tells us about his engagements till evening. He had a meeting
with Sardar Patel in the evening which had delayed him for the evening
prayer meeting. Gandhiji was worried about the differences between Nehru and
Patel. I reproduce here the last moments of Mahatmaji so vividly captured by
Ramamurthy- Gandhiji told the Sardar- Now I must tear myself away !.
Leaning on the shoulders of Abha and Manu, Bapu walked towards the dais from
where he would listen the devotionals and then deliver his speech.. Abha
remarked lightly to Gandhiji that the watch dangling from the waist was
bound to feel neglected as he would not look at tit all. Bantering in his
turn, the Mahatma said, Why should I, since you two are my time-keepers?

As he ascended the rise to approach the dais, he told the two girls, it is
your fault that I am ten minutes late. It is the duty of nurses to carry on
their work even if God himself should be present there. If it is time to
give medicine to a patient, and a nurse feels hesitant to do so, the poor
patient will die. So it is with the medicine of prayer. It irks me if I am
late for prayers by even a minute.. The last conversational remarks had
been made. The very last steps Bapu would take were now being taken. Past
the steps he was now coming towards the dais. Gandhiji took his arms from
the shoulders of Abha and Manu to fold his hands and acknowledge the benign
smile, eyes shining from behind his wire framed glasses, the namaskars many
offered to him.

Now with a namaskar that was like a Judas kiss, there came a thickset man
clad in a bush-shirt, with nads folded. He approached Gandhiji frontally. As
the man bowed, Manu tried to dissuade him from touching Bapu's feet as she
thought he was trying to do. The strong man pushed her away brusquely,
impatiently: he wanted a clear line of fire for the Beretta pistol he had
drawn from a trouser pocket. Now there ring out three shots in quick
succession. Even from a child they cannot miss their mark from that almost
point-blank range. Two bullets enter one after another the right side of the
chest of the frail man on his last walk. The third goes into the right side
of the Mahatma's abdomen. Bapu's uplifted foot falters as the first bullet
strikes.

As the second and the third hit, he sinks gently to the floor, breathing out
his last two words, holy in thankfulness or supplication, He Ram!. His
voice will speak no more. The crimsoning sunset on the sky witnesses the
green smooth lawn around the crumpled victim, his clothes staining red from
precious life-blood. Within minutes Bapu will be dead. The time is 5.17 p.m.
An epoch has ended. That was the last day of a great life. Mahatma Gandhi's

[Goanet] Is Konkani Goa's pride ...or just vanity?

2008-01-29 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dears,

One wonders what has happened to the print media in Goa. Except for
the GT, no newspaper in Goa thought it fit to carry in its 28 January
edition the entry of KONKANI, through the Konkani Nirantari, in to the
records of Guinness book on 27 January, 2008. Even the Konkani
language Sunaparant carried the report on 29 January [thankfully on
page one]. The Navhind Times found space only on page 15!

The GT has done us proud by carrying the report on page one on 28
January itself and following it the next day with another page one
report, both with photos! Two troupes from Goa were given prime time
at the Konkani Nirantari, without discrimination. In fact, almost as
affirmative action on the unity of the Konkan.

Almost all newspapers were sent information and photos on 26 and 27
January, 2008, courtesy facilities provided by Daiji world at the
venue. Yet, they remained in stark contrast to the English, Kannada
and even Tulu newspapers throughout Karnataka, including the local
editons of Times of India and Indian Express, that gave the event
coverage on 27 and 28 January, 2008.

The newspapers in Goa perhaps find their match in the generosity of
the Goan diaspora. Not for them is the generosity of Ronald Colaco
. or Ronald Mendonca, for that matter.

And KONKANI just happens to be Goa's OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ;-)

Mog asundi.

KONKANI made it to the GUINESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS !

Mangalore Jan 27, 2008: Teamwork is the ability to work together
toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual
accomplishment toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that
allows common people to attain uncommon results. ~Andrew Carnegie.
Carnegie said that, knowing fully well the power of team work. And
today the Mangaloreans know it for sure too. The Konkani Nirantari
Team from Mangalore has proved that you can accomplish just about
anything if you are a team. The committed contribution of each and
every member of this spectacular team has resulted in their success
today. The Non-stop Singing Marathon or the Konkani Nirantari has
placed itself on the world cultural map never to be wiped out again at
exactly 10 pm today. History has been made and history being history
can never be changed.

When the thought of the Konkani Nirantari was first planted in the
minds of the organizing committee, it was just a small seed; but one
which grew to enormous proportions as the months went by and today at
its culmination, the whole town of Mangalore is a part of it. This is
a matter of great pride to each and every Mangalorean, even the one's
who have not taken an active part in it.
All the arms of the media that include T.V. Channels, Websites and
Newspapers have given the Konkani Nirantari their unstinted support
and encouragement. Above all the word of mouth publicity and the
encouragement of the common people of Mangalore who stood behind the
Nirantari, has also led to its success. There has been unity among the
participants and unity among the spectators and all for a common cause
– to see the Nirantari achieve what it set out to do. The Konkani
Nirantari has brought all the Mangaloreans together as never before.

Keith Pullin thanked Eric Ozario, Louis Pinto, Arun Raj Rodrigues and
Ronald Colaco for their commitment to the cause. He then paused for a
dramatic moment and then declared the Konkani Nirantari as having made
it to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Following this Mr. Ronald Colaco addressed the gathering. He praised
Mandd Sobhann for their relentless search to raise funds for this huge
project. He also praised the Mangaloreans for their support and
requested them to continue to support their Konkani culture. He then
handed over a cheque of Rs. 2.5 Million to the Mandd Sobhann
President, Mr. Louis Pinto. He also handed over a second cheque to Mr.
Eric Ozario.

The closing ceremony came to an end with a befitting speech by the
much respected and loved Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann Shri Eric Ozario.
Eric thanked each and every person who was instrumental in helping to
make this event a success. While he thanked the media, he also made a
special mention of Mangalorean.com and appreciated their efforts in
supporting the Konkani Nirantari.

[Goanet] The Carmo-Manohar Panjim Reunion

2008-01-29 Thread Roland Francis
Since the patent on his traditional Goan Kashti had been long in
coming from Tallahassee the capital, Carmo decided to go without
further delay to Goa. His old friend Manohar seemed to need both
systems engineering and major funding in his political shenanigans.
The systems engineering he would delegate to Balbir Singhji senior and
he Carmo would concentrate on the slush funds.

Carmo had a plan in mind. He had recently met the new Saudi
ambassador-designate to Washington and had become his best friend.
Manohar too, had also become such a friend, a long time ago in IIT.
Carmo was promised untold wealth that he could share with Manohar, in
return for 'facilitation' to build a grand mosque opposite Panjim
Doordarshan. One that would rival the Al Faisal in Islamabad. Carmo
counted his wealth in Cuban rum and that much money would be more than
sufficient to buy him enough bottles for a thousand lifetimes despite
his infinite capacity. Manohar on the other hand needed to buy
legislators and they didn't come cheap these days. Would the BJP be a
problem to the mosque? Not at all. Manohar like a true-blooded Goan
politician was ready to sell his closest relative down the Mandovi,
let alone some ideology or some forgotten promises to throw the
Karnataka Muslims into the Arabian Sea.

So Carmo flies to Goa not without the usual incidents. Mostly related
to the consumption of alcohol on board the plane. While Air India has
a maximum of one or two drinks in mind for its transcontinental
flyers, to Carmo that would be insulting alcohol. This
misunderstanding was finally solved with Carmo buying all the
duty-free on board for his personal in flight consumption and an
announcement on the PA system by the chief steward that sorry, they
had forgotten to carry the duty-free on this flight.

After 20 hours of a sozzled journey, in peaceful ignorance of winter
turbulence and oblivious to the other passengers givng him scathing
looks every time he passed wind and snored - often simultaneously -
Carmo reached Dabolim. The Punjabis in the plane though, had given him
warm looks. Here after all was a fellow desi, drinking like there was
no tomorrow and expelling all that Sarson ka Saag.

Manohar was waiting in Panjim. He was told by his cronies that some
Goan American friend of his was coming to Goa to see him. And that
this friend was bringing him a lot of money. At first he thought it
was his friend Rajan. But no. Rajan had been a long time in Goa and as
happens to any overseas Goan who spends more than a month there, he
was ready to tap his relatives for further green. Was he not chasing
security guards and defecating ghanttis all over Campal and Mira Mar,
camera in hand. Was he not spending endless hours staring jaw dropped
at sleeping forms beneath statues and in city parks. Would a man with
money do all that? Manohar could not imagine that all this Rajan was
doing with sorrow in his heart for his beloved Goa. After all Manohar
was a Goan politcian and other than money, nothing tugged at his
heartstrings. So friend or not, Carmo was in for a warm welcome. He
had had enough of his friends crossing over to the other side and his
party big-wigs contemplating whether there was in their ranks, a more
suitable future CM for Goa than he.

Now Carmo, although carrying expensive air totes on his shoulders, was
showing the effects of a 20 hour flight and innumerable chottas under
his belt. And Manohar though having enough personal funds to buy out
the Gucci company thanks to his past Chief minstership, was in sordid
clothes since he intended to get the ghantti vote bank for himself by
dressing up as one of the boys. He wanted to show Digamber that two
could play at the ghantti game.

So camera slung over one's shoulder, airbags hanging over anothers and
a money satchel on the third, the three men met. Manohar did not leave
his house without at least 5 crores in his bag. Who knew which
legislator or minister he would meet. Carmo looked around for a bar.
Since the Caravela was right in front, Carmo suggested it.

Rajan's mind was working overtime. He was short of photgraphs. He had
exhausted all the ghanttis, sleeping figures, denuded hillsides, and
Orrisa security guards he could find. His viewing public caught up in
the rage against the ghanttis, were baying for blood, scandal and
righteousness. Never mind if they chose to exercise all three in the
comfort of their homes on those very hillsides that were denuded.
Rajan cunningly suggested they take a leak before they entered
Caravela.

Now anybody familiar with Panjim knows that there is no convenience on
that stretch of road except for the low walls. Had not Rajan taken one
of his famous photos of an office-goer doing the unthinkable on those
very walls? Whatever inhibitions Carmo had, had long since gone after
his 20th shot of the dark stuff. Manohar on the other hand as a good
host, was ready to do whatever his guest needed to do. So down came
the flies and out came the camera and

I need a clarification regarding whether you feel there is some route other
than what I have proposed to bring about a sustained change for the better
in Goa... You said :It may be better to invest in the long term agenda
upfront. [Anand Virgincar]

Hmm. I can see there is a slight communication problem due to semantics
centred on your word agenda. I thought of it in the sense of a list of
points for discussion. And I felt you had narrowed it down prematurely to
politics/parties/personalities (tunnel vision). I thought one needs to
have a broad gauged historical perspective before putting any plan into
action.

Now I sense that you think of agenda in terms of a to do list for the
future. You have already decided on some long term plan to fix Goa and the
first item is overthrow the present government. To me this seems like
Ready, fire, aim. All I was suggesting, theoretically, was that we
understand the Goa problem correctly and then devise a solution. This is the
right solution for the right problem (in contrast to right solution for
the wrong problem or wrong solution for the right problem). Hope this
helps.

Sporting looking to garner full points against Viva Kerala

HURRY! GEMS Portfolio closing on 15th Feb'08

PANAJI: Sporting Clube de Goa are looking to garner full points when
they meet Viva Kerala in the 14th round of the ONGC I-league, at Nehru
stadium, Margao.

Both the teams drew 1-1 in the first leg. Sporting Clube de Goa are on
seventh place with 13 points. While, Viva Kerala are one point behind
them are on eight position.

Tuesday's match is crucial for both the teams as a defeat for either
will put them in the relegation zone.

Sporting club will be missing Wilton Gomes, Samananda (injury) and
Denzil Franco due to double booking. But the return of Joseph Pereira
from injury will add more strength in the midfield.

While Viva Kerala has no injury worries, will be playing to their full
strength. It will be a good contest tomorrow as Viva Kerala is also a
good side with good foreign striker. They had a good start in the
league beating top teams but its their inexperience that has let them
down and we are going to exploit it tomorrow as we are confident of a
win, stated Peter Vaz, sporting's team president.

[Goanet] Degeneration of Indian politics - Is Goa going to set the pace ?

2008-01-29 Thread Vinay Natekar
By Inder Malhotra

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2008/20080125/edit.htm

WITH an audible sigh of relief, and in the presence of several Congress
leaders, the Nationalist Congress Party has announced that the crisis in
the Congress-led coalition in Goa, caused by the resignation from the
ministry of three NCP and an Independent ministers, has blown over.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, the NCP's trouble-shooter in
the tiny state, has also declared emphatically that the Congress-led
ruling coalition, headed by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, is safe.
However, the question is: for how long?

After all, it was the second nearly fatal, politically speaking,
upheaval in the Goa coalition in just seven months. Moreover, the crisis
has been resolved at a rather heavy price. The rebels have got their
pound of flesh in the form of reallocation of prized portfolios to their
satisfaction and the formation of a coordination committee of the
coalition partners.

The dreary details of the bargain are of little consequence. What
matters is the dismal fact that Goa, one of the smallest states and the
newest member of the Indian family (until December 1961 it was under the
occupation of Portugal), has become the microcosm of everything that has
gone wrong with the Indian polity - fragmentation, factionalism,
shifting loyalties, rampant corruption, uneasy coalitions and unending
political instability. Indeed, the way things are going, Goa might soon
start setting the pace for the rest of the country, rather than the
other way round.

There are four very disturbing implications of the Goa goings-on. The
first is that the main purpose of most - perhaps almost all -
politicians, irrespective of party affiliations, is to win an election
by hook or by crook, to somehow get a finger into the power pie and then
make as much hay as possible while the sun shines. This leads one to the
second point - that, in an increasing number of cases, the sun does not
shine for long. For, in an era when coalitions have become inescapable
but there is no coalition culture, things are bound to fall apart sooner
rather than later.

Even in relatively balanced coalitions in various parts of the country,
pathetically small groups and splinters having only a marginal
membership in the legislature have gleefully held various governments to
ransom. Goa is a delight for such elements because in the 40-member
assembly, the Congress has only 16 seats and the rival BJP 14. With the
help of the three members of the NCP and an Independent - Mr Vishwajit
Rane, a son of Assembly Speaker and former Congress Chief Minister
Pratapsingh Rane - the Congress-led ministry has acquired a wafer-thin
majority. Two other small parties, the Maharashtra Gomantak Party and
the Save Goa Front, which have two members each, add a little more
ballast to this. But this time around these parties had little role
because the resignations of three NCP ministers and Mr Vishwajit Rane
were enough to bring down the ministry.

The third steadily escalating factor perverting Indian politics is a
combination of rampant corruption and virtually insatiable greed. Not to
put any gloss on an extremely ugly state of affairs we have got to face
it that relentless politicisation of the police and investigating
agencies, shameful permissiveness of the top leadership of practically
every party, the so-called compulsions of coalition politics and
appalling judicial delays give the wrong-doers a free run. There was no
dearth of the gift of the grab during the days of single-party
governments. But opportunistic and messy coalitions have become
unabashed perpetrators of unbridled loot. Their uncertainty about the
durability of the opportunity only whets their appetite.

It is no mere coincidence that the talk about the Kamat ministry's
imminent collapse started immediately after all the 15 Special
Economic Zones (SEZs) notified in Goa were scrapped at the state
government's behest. A majority of the people of Goa may be opposed to
these special zones on various grounds, including land grab and a threat
to the environment. But powerful vested interests, insistent on SEZs,
are at work and the number of politicos having a high stake in them is
not negligible. The state of affairs is no different from that in
Karnataka where the late unlamented coalition between the Deve Gowda
family and the BJP won a place in history by making astounding
allegations of corruption against each other.

The fourth aspect of the Goa crisis is most deplorable, indeed
disgraceful. Once again, a former Congress Chief Minister of Nagaland,
Mr S. C. Jamir, now holding the exalted office of Governor of Goa, has
acted in a partisan manner that is a flagrant violation of
constitutional norms and proprieties, to say nothing of political
decencies. At a time when the Kamat ministry was clearly in a minority
and the state assembly's session to discuss and pass the appropriation
Bill was on, the Governor accepted the

Glenmark gets USFDA approval for Baddi plant
BS Reporter / Mumbai January 28, 2008

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals announced that the company has received
approval from the Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) in the United
States for its semi-solids (ointments creams) manufacturing plant at
Baddi, Himachal Pradesh.

This is the third Glenmark manufacturing plant to have been approved
by the American regulator.

The Baddi plant recently received GMP approval from the Medicines and
Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK, and from the
Therapeutic Products Directorate ( TPD), Canada.

The US FDA approval will now enable Glenmark to enter the niche
segment of semi-solid dosages in most of the regulated markets of the
world.

Glenn Saldanha, CEO MD, Glenmark, said: The current GMP
accreditation by US FDA for Baddi site is a significant milestone for
Glenmark, since other plants of the company at Ankleshwar and Goa are
already approved by these agencies, reflecting international standards
of quality system at Glenmark.

Glenmark's facility at Baddi is fully commissioned with more than Rs
230 crore worth of production coming from this facility.

Baddi presently supplies Glenmark's Indian requirements and has
produced batches for filing in the US and Europe.

The company expects the Baddi facility to break-even in its first two
years of operation.

Glenmark has its formulations manufacturing facilities in Goa, Nasik,
and Baddi in India, in Sao Paulo, Brazil and in Vysoke Myto, Czech
Republic.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 8. Keep Praying for Fr. Jude's recovery

2008-01-29 Thread Jude Botelho
Dear Friends, Please keep praying for Fr. Jude's complete recovery. Thanks.
Brenda

Hello Friends,

Thanks once again!!! Fr. Jude's angioplasty was
over last night. Though the cardiologist had informed him that the
operation would be done on Monday, the hospital staff was not informed and so
there was every possibility of it being postponed to Tuesday, as the OT was
heavily booked. However he was finally wheeled in the Operation theatre at
about 3:15 pm and within half an hour I was called immediately to the OT as the
doctors were hesitating to work on him. Initially the doctors were discussing
about it in the OT and they brought Jude into their discussion. They then
told me that there was a blockage between two arteries and below the knee,
which made it risky to work on. They said they would try putting in a balloon
or a stent, but since the blockage was 80% there was a risk involved and they
might have had to go in for a bypass that meant another surgeon would have to
be called. They asked for my opinion. I just told them to do what they felt was
best and leave all in the hands of God. Jude, I believe, was of the same
opinion. An hour and 45 minutes later the doctors came out to tell me that they
managed to put a balloon and I Just thanked God for his goodness, which has no
end! There were moments when I felt terribly alone but then I felt you
all were there with me in prayer and that is what brought about this good
result. Thank you!

He was brought back into the ward around 9:45 pm.
He was OK but now that he has a needle in the right hand he can do nothing
without our help...that was the only limb that was operating well, anyway that
is something minor. The worst is now over. I hope his sugar too comes down
fast.

Bye for now, going to the hospital.

Lots of love,

Colly Mascarenhas

[Goanet] Konkani Group Creates Singing Guinness Record

2008-01-29 Thread Goanet News
Konkani Group Creates Singing Guinness Record

By SAR NEWS

MANGALORE, Karnataka (SAR NEWS) -- A Konkani cultural organisation has
created a Guinness world record for singing Konkani songs non-stop for
forty hours.

The feat was achieved January 26-27 here by the local Mandd Sobhann
group that works for the promotion of Konkani language and culture in
Mangalore.

The programme entitled Konkani Nirantari was led by Eric Ozario and
others. Forty-four groups comprising more than 1,700 singers sang a
total of 600 songs breaking the previous record by Communidade
Evanjelica Luterana of Sao Paolo, Brazil, which sang for 36 hours in
2004.

Singers from the various parishes of Mangalore diocese, Goa, Mumbai,
Mysore, Bangalore and from the Gulf participated in the event which
kicked off at 6 a.m. on Saturday January 26, and ended at 10 p.m.
January 27 -- a total of 40 hours.

Keith Pullin from the Guinness Book of World Records London was the
adjudicator. At the end of the marathon, he certified that Maand
Sobhann had created a new record. There are 953 Guinness records
involving India already.

Konkani is the mother tongue of about 6.5 million people concentrated
in Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa, and
scattered in Europe, America and the Gulf states. It is the mother
tongue, among others, of Mangalorean and Goan Catholics and is the
state language of Goa.

Bishop Aloysius P. D'Souza of Mangalore blessed the proceedings at the
start of the marathon, which was started by a group of Sisters of the
Queen of Apostles, Vamanjoor.

The Bethany Sisters, St. Joseph's Seminary, the Dominican congregation
and Sandesha also formed part of the great effort.

Strays don't just attack people for no reason. At times it is the humans that
antagonize the animal out of fun. We can prevent strays from forming attacking
packs by reducing their hunger levels. GAWT, and NGO in Margao has succeeded in
doing this in areas along the coastal belt during the off season, when
restaurants are closed and animals have no food. Offer extra food or uncooked
rice or money to these NGOs instead of just complaining.

NGO's are doing the best they can. 1500 sterilizations by a single South Goa
NGO is quite a lot... perhaps not enough, but as much as they can do with the
resources they have. What's going to solve the stray problem is mass awareness
to citizens, better funding to the NGOS (From the Govt. as well as citizens),
better sanitation, stray adoption camps, regularly providing food to strays to
prevent them from forming attacking packs and systematic neutering and
healthcare to both stray as well as home owned dogs.

While I have nothing to say about the leopard incident, the problem about stray cattle causing accidents is also the fault of human owners being negligent.

It is also silly to state that there are more organisations in Goa protecting
animals than human beings. If that were the case, then we would not have:
these problems of stray dogs stray cattle
animals would not be slaughtered barbarically in the open as it happens in Taliegao
 Kharebandh every morning
the disappearance of frogs for the jumping chicken delecacy would not be a
matter of concern
the number of harmless snakes killed everyday due to lack of awareness
the number of monitor lizards killed for their skin to make ghumots
the increasing number of undergroud restaurants and spice farms that serve
illegal game meat.

Goan's need our MPs to work more towards providing us the basics of sanitaion,
and sustanable infrastrucuture, but when a leader goes so strongly to say that
he's for bullfights... it takes another leader to put him in place. Simply
saying that Ingrid Nwekirk is targetting a small target is a petty excuse. In
many recent cases, Goa has shown the way for the rest of India, and legalizing
a cruel sport will justify having more cruelty under the disguise of sport in
other parts of India. The foolish promises of Sardinha have already resulted in
a spurt of bullfights with the police unable to stop them.

While everybody is pointing fingers at who's responsible for what and who
shoould citisize who...we must also realise that we should not take this planet
for granted and assume that humans are the superior beings of everything and
every one.. Its possible to solve all problems without a bullet to the brain.

Dr Rozario Menezes, a relentless fighter against stray animals,
especially dogs, who have caused untold trauma and suffering to many
with their bites, is very right when he questions PETA chief Ingrid
Newkirk (Herald, 12 January) about her outbursts against our MP
Francisco Sardinha, who proposes to have bullfights legalized in Goa.

I do not support Sardinha's proposal, and feel that Goa has many
social and economic concerns which our MP needs to tackle that are far
more important than bullfights. Though thousands in Goa enjoy
bullfights, it is cruel to animals and should not be encouraged.

People in Goa as well as tourists would be happier if our MP had taken
up the issue of elimination of stray dogs, who cause mental and
physical torture to thousands in Goa.

However, like Dr Menezes, I too question the right of Ms Newkirk to
criticise Mr Sardinha on this issue, when she and other 'animal
lovers' do not even dare to say a word against the bullfights in Spain
and some Latin American countries. At the same time, she seems
completely unconcerned about the stray cows and bulls that cause so
many motorcycle accidents each year and take a toll of lives.

Ms Newkirk may not be faulted for not raising her voice

Re: [Goanet] Goan compliments and other expressions

2008-01-29 Thread Carvalho
I love Goan expressions and their various
transliterations into English. At no point should they
be taken at face value or as their English
translations.

For instance, sarke barke zala, in most parts of the
world is a compliment on being slim and lovely,
possibly having sweated your way to skinny perfection
at a high-end gym. Unfortunately, in Goa this means
you are way too thin to ever find a husband and
destined to die a life of destitution.

It's inverse, sarko motte zala, does not necessarily
mean you've put you so much weight that you look like
a walking coronary attack waiting to happen. This
remark was usually directed at Gulf-Goans, who having
consumed far too many Amstels in the Gulf, returned as
more-rounded individuals. As such, it hides a tinge of
envy, since jelly-guts are associated with happiness,
prosperity and general well-being in Goa.

Sarko voddho zala, does not mean you've become
taller. No, this snide comment just means you've grown
far too arrogant for someone who once lived in a house
of shenn and a diet of sorak.

Sarko tight ahlollo, does not mean someone was
wound-up or has the propensity to be elastic. It means
that Flaviano's Gaddi and Restaurant, opened early and
closed late.

Pocket malen, does not mean you were body-searched
at the airport, rather that some butter-fingered
urchin managed to pick-pocket your wallet. More often
then not, it means someone stopped on his way back at
Flaviano's Gaddi, where in addition to the feni pegs,
the makta was also flying high. Pocket malen, is a
nice one for the wife.

My favourite is tokleche bosola, which is often
transliterated by the English speaking Goans as
sitting on the head. By no means is this to be taken
as someone sitting on a person's head after having
murdered them or put them in some other compromising
position. In Konkani it means someone is trying to
boss over you, generally a daughter-in-law or
mother-in-law.

[Goanet] FINEPRINT: Mining cutting sharply into tiny Goa, says new environmental report

2008-01-29 Thread Goanet News

If I am not mistaken, Goa had attained a low of 13 deg
C in Dec 1981.

As also, recently confirmed with a cousin of mine (met

sometime in 1960.

Re coconut oil - as oils go, there are different
fractions that make up oil (e.g. diesel and petrol for
want of a comparison, though these are mineral oils as
opposed to vegetable oils), and these fractions gel up
at different temperatures (diesel is almost solid at
low temperatures whereas petrol still remains fluid).
A chemical engineer will be able to give a better
explanation...

Re: [Goanet] God and Metaphysical Principle (2)

2008-01-29 Thread Fr. Ivo da C. Souza

Dear Dr.Santosh Helekar,
This is the remaining part of the answer (2).

Nobody believes in the

metaphysical principles of Egyptian and Greek
religions any more.

*Which 'principle'? Metaphysical, self-evident of causality?
#For Plato the material

universe came from creative action of God.

#For Aristotle it was the metaphysical principle of Prime Mover. He speaks
of Nature striving for perfection.
#There was also the Babylonian myth of gods creating the world (Babylonian
epic of Gilgamesh and Enuma Elish).
Nature was considered to be filled with divine energy for its evolution.
It was on ontological grounds, having origins in God.
#This teaching of LOGOS was continued by early Alexandrian writers.
--Gregory of Nyssa (331-396) taught that the Creation was potential - that
God imparted to matter its fundamental laws and properties,
but that the Universe then developed gradually, under their own steam, out
of primordial chaos. God is the Lord of physical laws.
--St.Augustine (353-430) likens Creation to the growth of a tree from its
seed, in a slow process. The Creator provided the seeds ('rationes
seminales') of the Universe and of life, and let them develop in their own
time and amidst randomness. God started off the Universe. Here we have
seminally the theory of
evolution, with the hand of God at the beginning (theological concept).
--This is a theory of evolution which stands up well alongside modern
theories of the evolution of the Universe and the evolution of life on
Earth. His views were influential throughout the Middle Ages, followed by
Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) and
William d'Ockham (1287-1347): God set in motion the contingent Universe.
Creation does not contradict Evolution.
Our classes of Christian teaching do not contradict the Scientific
'discoveries' of New Physics... Creationism is biblical fundamentalism.
#Vedic tradition of Upanishad speaks of personal God, Brahma, the Creator of
the Universe. AUM, the Ineffable, is Brahma,
who 'unfolds' himself into the Universe.
Vivekananada (1862-1902) follows Neo-Vedanta: The philosophy of Vedanta in
general, and Advaita Vedanta in particular, maintains
that there is only one Reality - Absolute Consciousness (also called as
Brahman, Atman, God, or Self). Out of ignorance we perceive
this One Reality as multifarious. This cosmic ignorance is called Maya or
Avidya. With spiritual practice one is able to transcend the
limitations of body and mind so as to become one with the Reality; to know
or experience the Truth. This is the aim of human birth.
Scores of great souls have realized Self in this manner; and of course, it
is also our birth right. To realize this goal certain spiritual practices
are undertaken known as Yoga, viz. Raja-Yoga, Jnana-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, and
Karma-Yoga. Swami Vivekananda has contributed
immensely in redefining religion as 'science of spirituality'. Physicians
have dedicated their lives to spirituality.
*#Egyptian notion of creation: The creator of all things was either Re,
Amun,
Ptah, Khnum or Aten, depending on which version of the myth was currently in
use.
# Chinese myth of creation: Paan'ku from a chaotic egg.
--All these myths always involve the creation of human beings at some stage
by gods or other supernatural entities. Myths are attempt to express through
symbol
ultimate reality, which ultimate reality transends both the capacity of
discursive reasoning
and expression in ordinary human language. Myth points to a reality beyond
itself which
cannot be directly symbolized. Myth can be broadly defined as a narrative
(story)
concerning fundamental symbols which are constitutive of or paradigmatic for
human existence.
It establishes the place of human beings in the hierarchy of life in the
Universe--below gods and
other supernatural beings, but above animals and plants. This aspect shows
us the 'aetiological'
(or explanatory) function of Creation Myths.
The principle of causality is still valid. Myths are 'pre-scientific'
and 'pre-philosophic'.
They have been refined by Philosophy and Science. Yet some of them have
anticipated
Scientific Evolution Theories in 'pre-scientific', mythical, symbolic
language.

Re: [Goanet] CHRISTIANS synonymous with LOVE

2008-01-29 Thread Fr. Ivo da C. Souza

Dear Aloysius,
Thank you for the message. Sorry for the delay in reacting to it.
Christianity is a religion of Love. But if we fail to live up to the
Christian ideal, it is our fault. We confirm our weakness and our need of
forgiveness.
Discriminatory casteism is a crime against human rights and Christian love.
When we find it among us, we have to confess that we have fallen short of
the glory of God (cf.Rm 3:23). We are human. We have our limitations and
shortcomings. These are not 'shortcomings of Religion'. Fundamentalism is
also an error.

You wrote: 1. Priests and Nuns have become very commercial and
materialistic...
*Easily we can find fault even with someone who is self-sacrificing for
others... labelling them as 'commercial and materialistic'...

 2. It is still a fact that we Goans (lay folks as well as Priests and
Nuns)
still consider the original Hindu Caste, to which our fore-fathers
belonged

four hundred years ago, very important particularly at the time of
marriages...
*At this point, we have to be careful to distinguish 'caste' from 'social
status'. Remember that marriage is a partnership of love and life. There can
be problems of incompatibility at a later stage, and then problems crop up.
Today there are many 'inter-caste' marriages. Good, if they continue to love
and live together... without being victims of mere ' infatuation'... The
Church does not object to such marriages... The Church proclaims that we are
all brothers and sisters in the Lord. There is freedom in choice of
partners for marriage. It is a delicate 'love affair'...

 3. In addition, I have personally seen the huge discriminations practised
by Nuns and Priests in their own religious orders against others in their
communities who belonged to what was seen as backward groups (tribals,
from uneducated / non-social families -- or Goans against Mangaloreans,
Anglo-Indians, Keralites)...
*You have to admire also how they live together in a Christian way... There
can be also a healthy human competition to do the best by emulation...

4. Do we CATHOLICS really consider other Christian sects -- Baptists,
Presbyterians, Methodists, Anglicans -- CSI or CNI, Jehova's Witnesses,
Mar-Thomites, Syrian Christians, etc -- as fellow CHRISTIANS?
*They are. We accept them. But there are differences, difficult to cope up
with...

We of the Catholic Church (Roman rite) really need to evaluate our
FAITH
*Not only we, but all the human communities have to try re-live our human
solidarity... We have to evaluate, not our FAITH, but how we live our
Faith...

Thanks for clarifying Rajan. Obviously I'm not well
acquainted with how the caste association in Hindu
surnames works. When Catholic Goans link surnames with
caste, it is only with the intent to belittle someone
else or assert their own superiority. There are
ofcourse some surnames that link to communities,
places and historical perspectives, as Valmiki did

linking the surname to anything other than the
tail-end of a person's name seems superfluous.

To Goanet,

A lay person cannot be expected to understand the distinction between faith
and Faith. The only difference between those two words to me is the use of
Caps in the latter word. :-)

And yes, you're right I'm obviously not at your 'wavelength'. I haven't
studied complex theology and intricate interpretations of the Bible. You
said something about you interpreting the Bible at the intellectual level.
If the Bible was intended that way, there would be no salvation outside
Harvard, Oxford and a few top Universities.

My questions are from a common person's point of view, not from a person who
has researched what Bible 'scholars' have said in the past. When I began
reading the Bible, I noticed huge differences in what the Church teaches and
what the Bible teaches, and I don't think anyone should blindly follow
doctrine just because they're born in a particular faith, or is it Faith? I
really don't know.

Not that I repudiate my Catholicism. Far from it, but I'm sure any
practical-minded person would agree that the Church is not beyond-error. The
inquisition, the medieval crimes, indulgences, Pope Alexander VI and several
others, as well as several theological bloopers (which of course can all be
justified) are just a few instances.

I will refrain from asking any more questions here, since I might confuse
and misunderstand the answers I get.

[Goanet] Let's start Action to Stop Auctioning!

2008-01-29 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
All Goans don’t think alike nor do they share equal ideology thinking nor
is my expectation. It’s this prevailing difference that our politicians are
constantly trying to widen. Their tricks are simple - create cracks – widen
them – divide them on all possible measures – and than RULE GOA. We have
never countered their behavior or philosophies. We have become their slaves
floating like dust particles in winds blown by themwe are still floating
….don’t even know in which currents we are systematically diverted too…..we
don’t even know which supporter will land on which land…..yet we are
floating……flying high….and high…..and high.

If one extrapolates this logic to Goanet one can comfortably say that Goanet
also has good number of Hardcore Ideologists (implanted or otherwise,
difficult to judge) both in Hindu or Catholic spirits flowing HIGH in one's
blood. I have no problem with anyone’s ideology in the net or with their
thinking. But what I am more concerned is that we Goanet members being
educated members are not trying to give convincing answers to these HIGH
blooded people. There are quite a good number of members who irrespective of
their caste, creed, religion and even their status in the society try to
give logically convincing answers. While others only try to thrash the good
postings and or try to give unwanted twist to the postings as if to indicate
….. We don’t want you….we want to be as we are ….don’t preach us….. or some
thing like this. Recently I have seen couple of messages exchanged showing
dislike to even the names and surnames of individuals in the Net and is
still continuing! I am one of the victims of such criticism by one renowned
personality last year and very recently by two persons (if one is interested
I can provide links from archives)!!

I really don’t get any clue as to what’s happening with net, net members and
why? I honestly feel we should devote all our creative thinking to
finalizing or arriving at some point as to what’s good for Goa. How should
we come closer and unite to save our mother land Goa from the clutches of
our (I hate to say our) politicians?

Like me, you too have witnessed MGP UGP rules in Goa; lengthy Congress
rule in Goan and short rule of 4 ½ years by BJP. We have also witnessed 19
CMs in past 20 years - creating a record in Indian history. We also know how
these political parties have finished Goa. So the biggest question ahead of
us is to think which political party is better to rule our Goa. Is it MGP or
Congress or BJP or it’s none of the three or whether we will be better off
with Coalition form of Government or its better to have regional outfit
(even though Churchill single handedly / single headedly merged Save Goa as
if that party was formed with hidden agenda – Sell Goa – or that Save Goa
was Churchill’s English spelling mistake…one wonders these days) or should
we also include Religion in politics.

I think we need to grill around these issues in the interest of Goa. This
vital issue needs to be debated loud and clear without personality clashes.
And in doing so let’s first chalk out for ourselves the pros and cons of
each political party including individual politician and try to share our
thoughts to arrive at some points closer to reality……… only to save our
mother land Goa.

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

[Goanet] Re : My one point agenda

Dear Marshall-bab,
Thanks for taking the time to scrutinise and respond to my posting.
Let me take your comments on step by step ( I have edited a few
of your comments without changing what you were saying...this
is simply to make the post shorter lest the moderators reject it
on the count that it is too long ) :

MM says : Perhaps Dr Anand is joking when he says that Modi did
not use the Hindutva card .
I say : Dr Anand was not joking . He made a stupid mistake which
he realised within seconds of hitting the send button ( and I am
surprised that you are the only one which picked up this clinker
I dropped ). Modi definitely used the Hindutva card ( much more so
after Madam Sonia provided him with an opportunity to expand it
with her Maut ke Saudagar clinker ).What I was trying to say
is that Modi used it much less than he has done previously.to
the point that the RSS and VHP were not fully supportive in his
election campaign .

MM says : Prior to Godhra ,the BJP was consistently loosing every
 election.
I say : That is incorrect . The BJP has been in power in Gujarat
since March 14 1995 ( which was well before Godhra ) apart from
perhaps October 23 1996 to March 4 1998 when a faction of the
BJP formed the Rashtriya Janata Dal and took temporary charge.
This is however a minor error on your part compared to my much
 bigger mistake above .
Having said all that , Godhra ( and the BJP's involvement in it was
shameful and unforgiveable ). If I was in charge , I would punish
every politician even remotely involved in it ( and certainly not elect
any of them again , however good their performance was on the
 developement / administrative front )
I hope the Congress supporters on this forum are capable of making
statements like this on the 1984 Sikh riots etc.

MM says : In fact in the last Lok Sabha elections , the BJP won
 14 seats against the Congress 12 .
I say : These elections were post Godhra and when the Hindutva
card was being used to it's maximum . It proves my point that
the BJP cannot rely on this agenda alone if they wish to progress
politically ( and if an idiot like me can see this , the big bosses in
Delhi and Goa will have taken note )

MM says : I do not even remember communalism being an emotive
issue and a divide in Goa prior to the advent of BJP .
I say : That you do not remember is a personal matter . Differences
between communities in Goa has existed since long before the BJP
came to Goa .The fashionable term communalism has been applied
to it much more since the BJP's advent. And I stand by my earlier
statement on this forum , that the Congress is as much if not more
responsible for causing stess between Goan peoples than the BJP.

MM says : One finds postings of hatred/venom/RSS propaganda on
Goanet with blatant disregard for facts and truth ( which is as a
consequence of the brief BJP reign in Goa )
I say : Agree entirely except for 2 caveats
 a) There are also postings on Goanet expressing hatred/venom/
non-hindu organisation propaganda with blatant disregard for facts
and truth . It is up to persons like you and me to drown their voices.
( I have already made a public deal with Selma-bai on this forum
and will try my best to stick to my half of the deal )
 b) All that is BJP politics is not Hindu bigotry ( and vice versa )

MM says : The BJP has made progress not on any developement
card but by exploiting religious emotions.
I say : Not true . BJP has made progress using both religious and
developement cards . The former has been overemphasized , the
latter played down ( by the opposing camp )

MM says : Even today Modi is a role model for the BJP
I say : Not for the vast majority of BJP supporters...absolutely
not for me ( and I sincerely hope , not for Manohar Parrikar )

MM says : BJP create an imaginary enemy as Hitler did with the
Jews and then try to polarise communities.
I say : Opposing political groups are doing a much better job
of creating an imaginary Hindutva enemy and distancing
moderate and even mild Hindus from their non-Hindu
 brethren.

MM says : In places where Christians are in large numbers , they
are made out to be the enemy ( false propaganda on the inquisition,
 inflammatory VCD etc )
I say : In the context of Goa , BJP will be extremely foolish if they
try to make Christians their enemy . If they do anything to harm
the Christians in Goa , I will be the first to stop supporting them.
With reference to the VCD and propaganda about the inquisition
( whether true or false is immaterial to me ), I feel that was an
extremely stupid error of judgement which hurt the Catholic people
of Goa ( and hopefully there are many more Hindu's like myself who
found it hurtful ).I do not , however , feel that this ( and many
other errors the BJP goverment in Goa made ) were bad enough
to stop good people from all communities in Goa from voting them
 back to power ( espescially

[Goanet] Death Of The Mahatma

2008-01-29 Thread Goanet News Service

Death Of The Mahatma
Ashis Nandy

On the 60th year of the murder of Mohandas Gandhi, we must recognise the
ambivalence towards him in India's modernising middle classes. Gandhi was
not killed by British imperialism or Muslim fanatics, but by middle-class
Hindu nationalists committed to conventional concepts of statecraft,
progress and diplomacy. He was not killed by a lunatic, as Nehru alleged,
but by one who represented 'normality' and 'sanity'.

The middle-class antipathy to Gandhi cuts across ideologies. During one of
her earlier tenures, Mayawati precipitated a first-class public controversy
by attacking Gandhi. But she was only joining a long line of distinguished
critics of Gandhi, stretching from Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the classical
liberal turned Muslim nationalist, to Bal Thackeray of the Shiv Sena. New,
aggressive critics of Gandhi are now being thrown up by the knights of
globalisation in India.

The fear of Gandhi has been consistent in India and it has never been
confined to the expensively educated Indians now flourishing in the global
knowledge industry. This fear is the fear of ordinary Indian citizens
suffering from that incurable disease called Indianness and suspicion of the
open politics that empowers them and allows them to bring into public life
their strange, alien categories. It was this fear that Nathuram Godse took
to logical conclusion on January 30, 1948. His was the third attempt on
Gandhi's life by the Hindu nationalists, the first of which was made in
1930s. They made no such attempt against any other key secular leader in
India or against Muslim leaders seen as enemies of Hindus.

Godse thought he was executing Gandhi on behalf of a majority. Exactly as
Mayawati and, before her, E M S Namboodiripad felt that they were speaking
on behalf of a majority - the bahujan samaj, the proletariat, the Shudras
and the Dalits - when they attacked Gandhi. However, once the movement to
which Godse belonged began to falter as an ideological formation and succeed
as a political party dreaming of capturing power, it began singing a
different tune. The RSS included Gandhi's name in the daily prayers of its
branches and, in the 1980s, the BJP even adopted 'Gandhian socialism' as its
official party ideology. May be Mayawati's hostility to Gandhi had not waned
when she spoke out because she was yet to make a bid for pan-Indian
presence.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Leninist hacks have always considered
Gandhi a menace to progress, modernity and rationality. The respect to
Gandhi that some of the retired Stalinists have begun to show in recent
years is a consequence of their political demise. The vendors of secular
salvation now find that Gandhi has survived our times better than they have.

M N Roy, who broke away from Marxism, disagreed with the Leninists on many
counts but not on Gandhi. His three essays on Gandhi, read chronologically,
show a declining hostility towards the Mahatma. The first is dismissive, the
second ambivalent, the third mildly positive. As his confidence in being
able to mobilise people for his version of revolution faltered, he came to
grudgingly appreciate Gandhi's ability to touch the ordinary Indians despite
his 'irrational' credo. Indian Maoists in the late 1960s and early 70s were
no less hostile to Gandhi. He with his toothless smile seemed to them a sly,
scheming warhorse brainwashing rural India with his bogus ideology, whereas
they, despite their direct communion with objective, scientific history and
theoretical guidance from the great witch doctor at Beijing, had been exiled
to urban India to survive as an ordinary terrorist outfit. As Gandhi was
dead by then, they took out their anger against him by breaking his statues.

Within a decade though, from within the ranks of Indian Maoists emerged some
who drew heavily, often creatively, upon Gandhi. Pushed to the margins of
politics, with their dreams of an early revolution in tatters, the ageing
lions began to ruminate over their failures and take Gandhi seriously. Two
steps backward and one step forward, as the great helmsman might have said!
The liberals have never found Gandhi digestible either. Shankaran Nair, an
early Congress leader, said that Gandhi was against everything that the
great sons of 19th century India stood for. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was even
more forthright. He declared Gandhi's Hind Swaraj to be the work of a fool
and prophesied that Gandhi would destroy it after he spent a year in
India. Such honest estimates are now rare, because the liberals in the
meanwhile have produced their own house-broken Gandhi - modern,
nationalistic, progressive, statist and secular. There is nothing left of
the politically incorrect, intellectual maverick who took on the imperious
Enlightenment vision and refused to accept that its dominance was proof of
its finality.

It is possible that Gandhi sensed his growing isolation in public

Re: [Goanet] God and Metaphysical Principle (1)

2008-01-29 Thread Fr. Ivo da C. Souza

Dear Dr.Santosh Helekar,
I expected your answer as usual denying the statements wihout any proof.
If Science cannot convert you, nobody can 'convert' you to God, because
Science has become your Religion. This is my personal feeling.
Personally, I do not believe that there is an 'a-theist' in the world,
though atheists may be considered as those who deny the existence of a
personal God. There is some
Absolute for everyone.
To somebody obsessed with empirical science, it is impossible to argue. You
forget all other arguments of common sense...which you will certainly be
using in your life daily and act on faith. I shall give you my answer in two
steps (1)
Fr.Ivo

You wrote: 'Faith' has a role to play in scientific work.

You are mistaken. Faith has no role to play in
science.

*Gratuitous denial of the statement. Yet I told you that a scientist works
with assumptions and biases, with beliefs and phenomena. That is 'faith' in
the
common acceptance of the word (I do not refer to theological faith)... Can
you use Karl Popper's
falsification criterion for evolutionary theories?

You wrote As for the rest of your comments and

questions, I have already gone round that block
several times. Please check the Goanet archives.
*I have present all your answers. They are just a blind repetition:
Empirical science does not prove it. Therefore, I do not accept it.

My question: Can you prove scientific hypotheses? Is it all evidence?

You wrote: However, let me reiterate one point, that in contrast

to what you have said, metaphysical principles are
neither self-evident nor irrefutable.

*This is really a 'gem'. This could not come even from a scientist... I do
'believe' in your bright intelligence (through the principle of causality)
and also in your intellectual probity. You are not 'dodging', but you are
becoming a victim of your so-called 'scientific evidence'...

This is clear

from the fact that each religion has its own
metaphysical principles, which are often in conflict
with each other.

*Wrong. Each religion cannot have contradictory metaphysical, self-evident
principles.

For instance, Buddhism rejects the

idea of a creator on metaphysical grounds.

*Wrong. One thing is to deny the principle and the other thing is to
mis-apply the principle. The contents is not personal God. Buddhism cannot
reconcile the existence of a personal, compassionate God with suffering
(dukham). It does not deny the metaphysical principle. It is a 'practical
atheism'. Yet, there are different trends which 'divinize' creatures...

Hinduism

believes in a universe without a beginning or end.

*First of all, what is Hinduism?
Hinduism is eclectic, with several trends. It speaks of God as 'energy'.
There are different cosmogonies.
Creation myths:
In classical times the doctrine of Trimurti identified the three as aspects
of a supreme deity. Brahma was associated with the creator god Prajapati,
whose identity he came to assume. According to Manusmrti, at the beginning
of the process of creation, Brahma created eleven Prajapatis, who are
believed to be the fathers of the human race. The Manusmriti enumerates them
as Marichi, Atri, Angirasa, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Vasishtha, Prachetas or
Daksha, Bhrigu, and Narada. He is also said to have created the seven great
sages or the Saptarishi to help him create the universe. In Upanishad,
In the Hindu tradition, the whole creation is the dynamic game of three
fundamental forces
symbolized by the three gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. This triad is made
up of the creator (Brahma),
the sustainer (Vishnu) and the destroyer or transcendent (Shiva). The
correspondence of these three principles (creation, sustenance and
destruction) in our daily existence is to be found in birth, life, and
death.

Indeed, Vivekananda puts forth what he considers to be
a rational argument for it.

*Which is 'rational' argument? For Swami Vivekananda (1862-1902), the
Universe is an organic unity. All phenomena, from the amoeba to mankind's
behaviour are part of the evolution of this single entity known as Brahman.
And the goal of this evolution is self-realization, to manifest itself as
fully as possible. Vivekananda said in his speech at the World Parliament of
Religions in 1893: You are the omniscient, omnipresent being of the
universe. But of such beings can there be many? Can there be a hundred
thousand millions of omnipresent beings? Certainly not. Then, what becomes
of us all? You are only one; there is only one such Self, and that One Self
is you. Standing behind this little nature is what we call the Soul. There
is only One Being, One Existence, the ever-blessed, the omnipresent, the
omniscient, the birthless, deathless. Through His control the sky expands,
through His control the air breathes, through His control the sun shines,
and through His control all live. He is the Reality in nature, He is the
Soul of your soul - nay more, you are He, you are one with Him. There is a
teaching about space-time

[Goanet] CM Goa created History!

2008-01-29 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
Goa Dordarshan had an interview with Mr. CM of Goa which was telecast on
28th January 29, 2008 between 7.15 pm - 7.30 pm. The interview was in
Marathi. Mr. CM spoke well in Marathi except that he was often using Konkani
words/phrases which are not at all a problem.

He was asked a question as to who is responsible for second humiliation to
his government. In reply CM said - this time it was not opposition party
that played front stage drama but careful orchestra was played behind the
screen. (This answer was Atypical - hit a dog anywhere he will always limp
on his leg). The biggest question that remains unanswered Mr. CM is, who
played the drama on the stage, who where the active actors on the stage and
why did they act so, what were their demands? Where they hired to play the
drama by any Parivar and if so, which Parivar member drafted the script for
the drama? For better clarity, Mr. CM should have answered all these
associated questions for no Goan till date knows factuality involved. In
absence of this clarity from Mr. CM, Goans and media are involved in gossips
and speculations after speculations. May be Mr. CM is prevented from giving
exact clarifications! However the cat came out when he was answering
subsequent question!!

Next question that followed, now that the dust appears to be settled, what
was the formula used to solve that second fiasco. Mr. CM replied, while his
body language was answering something else, - it's for the first time that
extraordinary coordination committee has been set up which comprises of
central leaders of Congress NCP, Mr. CM of Goa and Independent
candidate(s) backing the present government. This committee will decide
which portfolios are to be given to which party and to whom. The committee
will also decide on how to go about with the functioning of the government
so that no debacles occur in near future. I will only have to follow the
decisions taken by the said committee and all will have to abide by it.

If one analysis all the replies given by Mr. CM Goa to the questions asked
during interview and his body language while he was replying, one can easily
come to conclusion that CM of Goa is the first CM with powers taken away -
when distribution of portfolios is always the prerogative of CMs! Above all,
for the first time, CM of Goa will have to consult not only to Congress High
Command but will also have to consult Coordination Committee!! These two
imposed hurdles do not in any way dilute the final consultation requirement,
for final say, with Supreme High Command of Congress party in Sonia. What a
fantastic formula of restricting the free movements of CM of the State!
Above all, CM Goa will also have to get clearance from bunch of non-chosen
cabinet ministers for any decision!

All these imposed requirements on CM Goa gives a signal to Aam Admi that
today Goa has a Government that is being governed by someone else other than
CM! CM Goa created history not only in Goa but in entire Indiaby
willingly surrendering all legitimate powers and the rights of CM.

Fore sure with such a new formula no MLA would ever dare or will be willing
to become rubber stamp CM...good stability indeed..and good for ruling MLAs
to do what they want without any hurdles. Three cheers to CM Goa.

Best Regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

2008-01-29 Thread anand virgincar

  The story so far :

I requested a clarification in response to Philip-bab's suggestion that
I should invest in a long term agenda upfront ( rather than take the
political course I have proposed )

My request to Philip-bab was :
I need a clarification regarding whether you feel there is some route
other than what I have proposed to bring about a sustained change
  for the better in Goa.
Philip-bab made the following comments :

  1) I thought of it in the sense of a list of points for discussion.

  2) I thought one needs to have a broad gauged historical perspective
before putting any plan into action.
  3) All I was suggesting, theoretically, was that we understand the Goa
problem correctly and then devise a solution.

  4) Hope this helps.

My final comments ( in this particular exchange ):

  1) Unfortunately , Philip-bab, it helps very little ( or not at all )

  2) I have started my Goanet journey and have taken a particular
stand ( and it is only a very minor part of what I striving to do in my
small contribution towards making Goa a better place for future
generations of Goans irrespective of their religious , political or
socio-economic status ) after much thought and careful study of
historical , practical and many other broad perspectives.

  3) As you obviously differ from me in the methods to adopt ( and
I respect your right to do so ) , it may be fruitful if you can start
a fresh thread about how we can understand the Goa problem
correctly and then devise a solution and /or a list of problems .
I promise you I will follow the discussion keenly and if practical ideas
emerge , will abandon my agenda ( and I say this again ..will
support the alternative solution proposed EVEN if it means switching
political affiliations ).That, my dear friend , is surely an offer you
  cannot refuse.

  4) And finally, in passing , people with medically caused tunnel
vision ( seen in many conditions like glaucoma and degenerative
retinal disease ) function pretty well in most daily activities ( I
sometimes wonder if Arjun from the Mahabharat was afflicted
by it , considering the archery feat he performed to hit the eye
  of the target ! )

  luv and regards,
  anand

Re: [Goanet] God and Metaphysical Principle (2)

2008-01-29 Thread Fr. Ivo da C. Souza

Dear Dr.Santosh Helekar,
This is the summary of the discussion (3).

*I shall stand by what I have been
arguing for:
1.There is no conflict between Reason and Faith, between Science and
Religion. Truth cannot contradict Truth.
2.Bible does not teach Natural Science, therefore it does not contradict it.
3.Natural Science does not prove nor disprove the existence of God.
4.Scientific theories of evolution are hypotheses (or models) to explain
natural phenomena. They can be discarded and replaced. They cannot be
proved.
5.Science tries to explain the natural phenomena, but it cannot replace
metaphysics. Therefore, it should not go beyond the limits of natural
experimentation. The God of the physicists is the cosmic order. But
scientists, though they cannot prove the existence of God, may have deep
insights into the inherent harmony of the entire creation and see God's
finger. For us Christians, this God is the Father of Jesus Christ. This is a
revealed truth of Bible.
It is interesting that we go from Stephen Hawking's 'anti-religious
agenda': What
place, then, for a Creator?, to Paul Davies who stated: It may seem
bizarre, but in my opinion science offers a surer path to God than religion
(God and the New Physics, p.ix). He may be overstating the case... But it
seems to be true today: Science offers us a 'path', leading to hitherto
unknown polyvalence of Truth, extending down through the history of the
intellectual curiosity of humanity...
Many scientists never probe the profound implications, and limitations, of
science. But are not those that do -- those who find philosophy, not
technology, at the inner core of science -- most likely to be physicists? Of
all the sciences, it is physics that asks those questions which are the most
fundamental, and perhaps unanswerable.

In physics and, I believe, in religion, humility means recognizing the
limits of our knowledge and accepting those limits. To be human is to be
unknowing, but it is itself a kind of knowledge to accept that unknowing.
There remains an undefined, unlimited, indeterminate consciousness . . . a
vague comprehension of the Absolute, wrote Antonio Aliotta. This is the
only way in which we can grasp that inscrutable power. We must not seek
farther . . . It can only be our duty to subject ourselves to the limits of
our thought and to recognize a mystery which really exists. It is a mystery
that resides in that place where the deepest science ends and the deepest
religion begins (Physicist Gary E.Bowman, from Northern Arizona
Univesity).Christian Revelation comes to our rescue. Religion gives us
meaning of life.
Existentialism speaks of absurdity and dread (existential 'angst'), to which
Science has no answer.
Dr.Viktor E.Frankl has answered with 'logotherapy' (through meaning of
life).

Dear Philip,

As in the case of Manohar-bab, Rane, Karnataka's H.D. duo [Devegowda
and Kumaraswamy] and a host of other guys and their
cronies/well-wishers or whatever, this is a case of what Statisticians
call Purposive sampling. The answer is a KNOWN. The survey, and
analysis, is done only to justify the Known.

Installing a known devil in a known position is what is called the
AGENDA, hidden or otherwise. The principle is simple: Better the
devil one knows than the unknown. The unkown may also be a devil,
perhaps of greater intelligence [and, consequently, the ability to
cause greater damage] while feeding the populace with placebos that
seem to cure all ills of the earlier devils. The understanding of the
causes and effects is not something the Dotor is prepared to do. He
does his diagnosis, and prognosis, based on the symptoms and
prescribes the medicine.

How one wishes Malarial fever could be cured by a few tablets of
Crocin or some other Paracetamol ;-) Quinine is the bitter pill one
has to swallow. Even gin and quinine containing tonic water will not
help as some supporters of Manohar's former No.2 -turned- Goa's
No.1 are bound to find out in Village Goa [or Aldeia de Goa as it is
known in Portuguese]. There is no substitute for the bitter truth.

We have to learn to play chess like Ivana Furtado. One cannot change
the pieces on the Chess board or convert all the pawns into Queens.
Strategy, concerntration, practice and hard work are the only way to
win a chess game. Ditto for politics and development. If one does not
have the time, intelligence or the perserverence one should play
Chinese chequers or Ludo, not chess!

Is there some effort on Goanet to search for true
goans?

Welcome to reality on Goanet, Sonia. Considerable amounts of the
debate on this forum for months now have focused on this very
issue. It is the usual divisive agenda of dividing people into
good and bad based on ethnic background. In such a context, this
kind of status assumes overwhelming importance in some people's minds.

People move all the time, I met a family called Pai in
Kerala, originally from Goa but moved to Kerala a long
time ago. They go to Goa everytime there is something
of importance in the family, a wedding, a journey
abroad, they however did not know a word of Konkani
but are fluent in Malayalam. What are they goans or
Malayalis ? Does it matter ?

Couldn't agree with you more that it is a totally irrelevant
issue. But when you start classifying people as good or bad based
on such things, beating your breast and trumpeting your ethnic
background becomes very important.

Does the same principle hold for other religions like
