 Dr Jose Colaco said :

I agree with Floriano Lobo's views on Manohar Parrikar's do
whatever to keep the kodel. I submit that IF Manohar Parrikar
hadn't come to power via coups and try to stay in power by making deal
with the ones he now criticises, He would have been incharge of Goa
 for a long time.

Don't know if that would have been good or bad for Goa - after all,
even Antonio Oliveira Salazar was initially - an able administrator!

  My comment :

Based on a careful study of Manohar Parrikar during his term as
chief minister ..and an equally detailed analysis of him after
he was dethroned ..and actual meetings with a much changed
individual following the inability to come back to power in 2007,
I am firmly convinced of the following :

1 ) If Manohar Parrikar's term in power had continued uninterrupted
beyond February 05 for a prolonged period , it would have been bad
  for Goa. Pretty BAD.

2 ) After 3 years of being in the wilderness and having become
more pragmatic , a much more mature administrator and most
importantly , more considerate about viewpoints and ideologies
that do not match his own , if he comes back to power now and
has a long run , it will be good for Goa.Unequivocally GOOD.

I enjoy the programme WE THE PEOPLE and a great admirer of Bharka Dutt, but
why do we need publicity on T. V Channels, why can't we act, one of the
Ministers on the show did not have much to say and i guess due to the
frustrations he was comparing the level of crimes with UK, Remo Fernandes
(whom i really respect) only criticised the top guns , mafia, and the links,
Oscar apart from trying to make his voice felt and actions like a politician
in the making could not make an impact, i find it very strange we never act
, never put our actions , never come out as united to fight these
anti-social elements, and one point Remo made which is very valid was
disunity amongst Goans.

Goans need to wake up to safeguard their mother land and all the goan youth
who are falling prey to very bad habits , forget all this jazz of we the
people , all this is mere media publicity and hype and we get carried away.

Let's get our act together of unity and save Goa and Goan youth .

From: Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED]
As a scientist, he is searching in the Bible (or
Religion) what is not being offered there.

This is a gross distortion of my statements, and of
 what I am doing.
*I am time and again repeating that Bible does not offer scientific
explanations of the natural phenomena. Yet Dr.Santosh is referring to the
fundamentalist, literalist, wrong interpretation of the Creation School.
This is the reason
why I said that he is searching in the Bible what the Bible is not offering.
My contention stands, namely there is no conflict between the Bible and
sience.

 (Please see
 http://www.biblebaptistpublications.org/sciencebible.html
for the Biblical interpretation of another Christian
denomination, which has a major conflict with
 science).
*We have to investigate the literary genres and the poetic style.
Those are not scientific statements, but poetic expressions.

My problem is with Fr. Ivo's bogus interpretation of
 science,
*Again he is distorting my views. My definition of Science is
the standard concept given by the empirical sciences.

and with the implication that his specific
 religious interpretations represent religion in
 general.
*I am precisely for a critique of religions and for a dialogue.

 Fr. Ivo's interpretation of the
Bible has absolutely no bearing on the understanding
 of Hinduism...
*How could it have?

Every pious Hindu believes in reincarnation,
which is in direct conflict with science.
**It has to be investigated. I found an explanation in
http://www.boloji.com/hinduism/064.htm and in
http://people.howstuffworks.com/reincarnation4.htm.
I am not discussing it here.
I do accept the teaching of the Bible on the resurrection of the dead.

People of
many religions, including Fr. Ivo's, believe in
miraculous explanations for natural phenomena, which
is also in horrible conflict with science.
*Natural phenomena cannot have miraculous explanations.
When the facts are extraordinary and not to be explained by Science at all,
we can think about the intervention of God. There are several criteria
to determine whether an event is a miracle.
I am writing these lines on the Feast of the Resurrection of Christ,
it is a meta-historical event, supra-scientific: the tomb was empty,
verified by the witnesses, and then Jesus of Nazareth appeared to his
disciples.
These events brought a radical transformation in them.
This goes beyond the categories of time and space, beyond Science...
Happy Easter to all!
Fr.Ivo

Dear Anand,

before I answer your questions posed, let me unequivocally apologise
for my oversight at having the FAQ in question on our website. The
success (or failure) of the upcoming International Goan Convention in
Toronto has absolutely nothing to do with the agenda of any other
similar meeting taking place on this or any other continent.

I would not want you to foster that erroneous connotation.
-
A few questions to the organisers of the Toronto convention :

   # Are non Hindu brethren excluded from the pleasant social
gathering with song and dance organised by the Hindu brethren ?

NO, check out their list of attendees.

   # Are Hindu brethren excluded from the full-fledged international
working conference which plans powerful initiatives and historic
changes for our motherland ?

NO, but none have responded to our call. Surely all the Konkanis of
Ontario aren't heading south this July.

   # Is it not possible that an informal gathering can come up with a
few initiatives for Goa ( maybe not as powerful and historic as in the
working conference ) and celebrate Goan identity over coffee and
cocktails ?

Absolutely, and we wish them every success in that unscripted endeavour.

   # Are you sure there will be no native Goenkars at the song and
dance conference ?

Their keynote speaker is one

   # How do you think Hindu brethren will react to the remark above ?

Their sentiments have already been conveyed to us and this public
apology together with the timely removal/editing of the offending
paragraph will hopefully convey our sense of regret.

   # How would non Hindu brethren feel if a similar remark was made by
the organisers of the song and dance conventionnay social event,
about the working conference which is committed to powerful
initiatives and historic changes for Goa ?

We are looking for constructive criticism but lets not get carried
away with the rhetoric.

   # Finally , will the attendance at the powerful and historic Toronto
convention reflect the proportion of religious and political affiliations
in Goa ( and have previous working conferences organised by the
personnel associated done so ? )

NO, the proportions of the diasporic Goans in the Greater Toronto Area
and, for that matter, outside Goa, are significantly different their
counterparts within Goa. For obvious reasons, we don't expect a huge
contingent of delegates from Goa that will influence those
proportions.

   If not , WHY ?

I cannot speak for organizers of previous working conferences (the
previous academic conference, 20 years ago, was well represented
albeit in numbers proportional to the immigrant population of Goans at
the time.)
-
Thank you for bringing this unsavoury matter to our attention. I take
full responsibility for not having adequately reviewed the website.

Sincerely,

Kevin Saldanha
Mississauga, ON.

HOT AIR ON GOANET

I must confess on reflection, and with all due respect,

That there's a yawning and frightening disconnect

Between what one reads on Goanet

And the reality that one can easily get

On the ground – if one were the real facts to collect.

The common man in Goa is far from being at all concerned

With analyses, theories and arguments however learned.

He simply wants to know why things are not as they should be,

And why they have now changed, for the worse, to such a degree,

And when he'll see the eden for which he long had yearned.

Dears,

There is an interesting article in the GT today by Adv. Jos Peter
[also author of Scarlett, Manion and Me in Herald and GT earlier]
that compares and contrasts poor labour class non-Goan immigrants, the
noveau riche Delhiite Goans and the Goa-born anti-Goans [a term coined
by Oscar Rebello which has gained currency on the banks of the river
Mandovi and recently at We, the People at Baga-Calangute]

Adv. Peter seems to have taken a leaf out of Pravin Sabnis' Monday
Muse and taken the use of the Metaphor [or, smilingly, the simile
as in the Convent song that goes When you are happy and you
know and you really want to show it ...S M I L E. ;-) ] and compared
Scarlett's death to that of a roadside hit-n-run accident involving a
stoned youth in stone-washed jeans on a motorbike, possibly riding
triple seat.

It is an interesting article ...even though I do not agree with his
suggestion that we should focus only on the two-sides of one issue
...reponsibility of the keeper and the killer. When there is
collateral damage, one has to take a multi-lateral approach. Fiona and
her family can move on. The rest of Goa's populace [specially the Nth
generation Goan, where N 1] hardly has that option to protect
his/her /their children from the ravages of drugs ...even if there is
no mafia involved in Goa.

Adv. Peter, of course, is a lawyer from one or more of the accused in
the case ...and represented another who may now be a Prosecution
witness, instead of being an abbettor to the crime specially if he
had the means to call PCR on Toll Free 100 and save a life.

Utt Goenkara will hold a public meeting at Chapora
Market on Tuesday 25th March at 5 pm to demand the
immediate suspension of Dr Silvano Dias Sapeco,
Professor and Head of Forensic Medicine at the Goa
Medical College for bungling of British teenager
Scarlett Eden Keeling’s post-mortem by his grave
irresponsible and professional lapses.

The meeting would also demand that suspended Police
Sub Inspector (PSI) Nerlon Albuquerque who is sought
to be made a scapegoat out of political vendetta be
immediately re-instated.

Amongst other irregularities Dr Sapeco in 2003 had
messed up a postmortem of a Molcornem man in Quepem
Taluka, Mr. Floriano Diniz by converting a glaring
murder into a suicide and Dr. Sapeco’s continued
manipulation of post mortems needs to stop.

The Chapora meeting will highlight Goa’s crumbling
infrastructure and filthy beaches as a result of which
the State was being visited by a class of tourists who
are more of a nuisance value than a boon to our
economy.

The meeting will also demand a total crackdown on the
rampant drugs and other anti-social activities on the
coastal belt in particular.

Goa Government would be called upon to send a very
clear message to the world that tourists looking for
drugs, sex and other nefarious activities were not
welcome or needed in Goa.

Interesting Fred.
This proverb written in Devnagiri is Fatarpechyean(not Fatorpechyean).
V.P. Chavan also includes an analogous proverb, Kashila ghele mhunzhe
Prayag javal. Having gone to Kashi means Prayag is nearby. If it is
the same Fatorpa, this means as you speculate, that it was outside the
known boundaries of Goa--but was Quepem ever outside Goa, or just the
village Fatorpa/Fatarpa? Perhaps this has to do with the Novo
Conquistas. One would think this proverb has been around in excess of
a couple of centuries--also considering that pilgrims would visit that
Shantadurga temple there from far. If it indeed is Fatarpa and not
Fatorpa, the proverb would be saying, Having gone to Fatarpem(the
village) means Goa is close by.

Now do not tell me that Goa was ever close to Tughlakabad or Nayii
Dilli, or Bihar!

 Dear Goanetters ,

The Goa home minister said at a press conference on 18 March 08 that
Fiona MacKeown is trying to divert attention from questions about her
own negligent behavior by blaming Ravi Naik and the Goa police.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFOky4xf5VI

Well Ravi , here are a few questions about the negligent behavior of
the Goa home minister , Goa police and Goa Forensics :

# Scarlette died on 16 February 08. What were the police doing till
8 March 08 when a 2nd autopsy was performed after persistent
demands from Mrs MacKeown ?
# How could the chief of forensic medicine in Goa, Dr S Sapeco give
a report of accidental drowning on a child of 15 found without clothes
on and with 50 injuries on her ?
# How could the police accept this report ?
# Dr Sapeco said on CNN IBN that he had verbally mentioned the
possibility of homicide although he had not included this in his written
report. Is this normal procedure ?
# Had Dr Sapeco been involved in a similar incident previously and
suspended by Manohar Parrikar ?
# How did the number of injuries increase from 5 to 50 in the second
autopsy report ?
# What did your friend Aleixo Sequeira mean the other day on NDTV
when he said there was not much difference between the 2 autopsies ?
# Why was the police officer Nerlon Albuquerque suspended ?
# Had Nerlon Albuquerque been involved in a similar incident previously
and suspended by Manohar Parrikar ?
# What right did the police have to photocopy and release Scarlette's
private diary ( as well as confidential emails from police computers )
into the public domain ?
# On what basis are you demanding that Fiona MacKeown's visa to
India not be extended / renewed ?
# How come the Goa government has developed a sudden interest in
the professional career of Vikram Verma , the lawyer defending Fiona
and Scarlette ?
# Why is the Goa government so vehemently opposed to CBI involvement ?
# How come the police don't like Dr Sapeco's second report which says
the
child was murdered ( when they loved the first one which concluded it
was
accidental drowning ) ?
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/002200803232121.htm
# Last , but not least , do you know Ravi Naik's son Roy Naik who has
been
named on NDTV by 2 independent sources , including a Deputy
Superintendent
of Goa police , as being knee deep in the drug trade in Goa ?
http://www.navhindtimes.com/articles.php?Story_ID=032062

WHO IS TRYING TO DIVERT ATTENTION FROM THESE QUESTIONS , EH ?

And BTW goanetters , while we are on this topic , have a look at these
videos
of the statements made by Goa Police on this issue.
Their body language probably reveals than the predictable comments they
make.

Dear Marshall,

Well said.

Your suggestion could also well serve Dr. Anand Virgincar on his
thread Why Manohar Parrikar is not the CM of Goa ...and probably
never will.

The BJP, like the MGP, SGF and UGDP [now already de-recognised] would
do well to reform and revise their constitutions.

I have NOT been following this thread carefully. And it appears most of its
contents have long gone off course.

Most intelligent people BUILD ON various constructs in a POSITIVE manner. That
is how progress is made in a dialog and in a community. A few, perhaps more
than a few among Goans, appear to promote themselves by merely zapping others.

The topic of separating, and trying to present as a contradiction, science and
religion appears to be an endearing subject for Goans, especially on Goanet.
In displaying their limited knowledge, this topic of contradictions is used to
demagogue both fields.

This thread and others related to religion may have become an adult version of
a Pissing Contest. I wish the moderators gave some consideration to ending
this thread. Yet, here is an example of bringing together the two fields rather

From: Fr. Ivo da C. Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for giving me a well-deserved mental-health break.

Mario responds:

You are very welcome. I hope you don't need another one soon by defending the
indefensible:-))

Comment: The comments identified by initials below are from the previous post.
My current comments are identified by my full first name.

MG: such discussions miss the whole point of a religion, certainly ours. In
our religion, I believe the focus should be on the Golden Rule, the Ten
Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount.

Fr. Ivo: *It is the only commandment mentioned by Jesus (cf.Jn 13:34).

MG: Much of the rest is ceremonial stuff, conjured up by church leaders, some
for fundraising purposes, that often distracts from the essential message of
Christ which is summarized in these teachings.

Fr. Ivo: The sacraments are celebrations of life, the Word of God has a central
place.

Mario adds:

John 13:34 is supported in very practical terms by Matthew 5 - 7.

I support anything that focuses on John 13:34 and Matthew 5 - 7, and oppose
anything that distracts attention from these.

MG: Over the years our church leaders developed so many rituals that are
repetitive to the point of being meaningless in any practical sense. For
example, does repeating the Hail Mary endlessly in the Rosary, almost as if one
were in a trance, substitute for a heartfelt prayer to her in your own words?
I doubt it. Do we think Mary did not get it the first time?

Fr. Ivo: There are different kinds of prayer. All these methods, including
biblical and spontaneous prayers, may help different people.

Mario responds:

I have never understood how repeating some prayers by rote as if in a trance,
over and over and over again until the mind is numbed, helps anyone when the
focus should be on John 13:34 and Matthew 5 - 7?

MG: How many Saints do we need to intercede for us in Heaven? Do any of them
count if Mary, Christ's own Mother, cannot help you?

Fr. Ivo: You know the doctrine of the Communion of Saints. We have a big album
of our Friends in Heaven.

Mario adds:

The album started off great with martyrs who were persecuted and gave their
lives for the Christ. Lately, the album is tending to become a farce. For
example, the attempt to fast track Pope John Paul II.

In my never humble opinion, the case of this Pope should be decided by
subsequent generations far removed from knowing him personally and benefiting
from his patronage, not by his own friends and cronies who succeeded him. I
have formally objected to fast tracking his case simply because he reacted very
late to the priestly pedophile scandal, then reacted weakly and seemed more
concerned for the pedophiles and the image of the church, and not concerned
nearly enough for the thousands of victims who were scarred for life. For this
Pope to bring Cardinal John Law, who had tolerated and enabled one of the worst
of the pedophiles and was forced to resign in disgrace, out of retirement and
make him an Arch Priest at Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the few churches in
Rome directly administered by the Vatican was nothing short of scandalous.

I have written to Pope Benny that he clearly has a conflict of interest in the
case of John Paul II and should recuse himself in this case. Leave it to
others 50 years from now. What's the hurry?

When I need help I go straight to the top - to Mary, whom I was named after but
have repeatedly failed to live up to. I don't bother with anyone else.

MG: How did we get from the manger to the palace?

Fr. Ivo: This is part of our inculturation. It is unavoidable. Although trying
to live close to Christ, you are not living in a 'manger'.

Mario responds:

Inculturation? Unavoidable? Bah, humbug! These are self-serving sophistries.
The church has gotten so far from the manger that claims that they are living
close to Christ are patently bogus.

MG: I was thoroughly amused just a few days ago when the Church listed some
more sins - one of which has something to do with accumulating excessive
wealth.

Fr. Ivo: The sin of affluence in the materialistic world.

MG: Is there any institution with more excessive wealth than the Catholic
Church? Just visit Rome and the rest of Italy and see for yourself.

Fr. Ivo: Remember that you are speaking of the Church that is 'mobilizing'
money for distribution throughout the world.

Mario responds:

Most of the inordinate wealth of the Catholic church is immobile and invested
in bricks and mortar and real estate and expensive works

Dear Goanetters,

My response to Message: 6 Date: Sat, 22 Mar 2008 21:43:25 +0530 From:
Valmiki Faleiro [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: Re: [Goanet] Goa's Editors-3: HERALD (Goa) Goa's Editors-4:HERALD
(Goa)

My humble explanations to humble corrections suggested earlier on above
subject line.

In case of a story about Catholic fisherwoman from Margao fish market and
that of Margao Business man I was very clear in saying in my first response
i.e. Here I am not contesting as to which of the two versions are correct. I
am only trying to cite what had appeared in dailies during those days and
who was the editor those days. (Have a relook to my original posting which
is appended here below)

So I have NO heart to loose NOW nor I lost my heart THOSE DAYS. On the
contrary, may be those days me being young as was the writer of the original
message, I might have been thrilled to read that story!

Let me explain why I remember that incident. Mr. Felicio Cardozo was then a
teacher at Navelim School was also the reporter of Romi Konkani Daily
named Uzvaad whose editor was Mr. Evagrio Jeorge. Mr. Evagrio Jeorge, a
freedom fighter along with another freedom fighter Mr. Mark Fernandes was
killed in a shocking and tragic bus accident in front of Tourist Hostel at
Panaji. I just cannot forget that tragic accident because that accident
killed two freedom fighters at one go. Since that time I used to always
appreciate Evagrio for his smashing reporting in Uzvaad along with the
reporting of the famous story which writer wrote recently under the subject
titled above. The story/message/reporting was carried in Uzvaad for the
first time (I maintain my previous expression). And if at all it was
subsequently carried by Divtti, (a Margao based daily with office at Comba
- Margao) as the writer say I am not aware of it. But this is not the point
in question or under debate.

I maintain my original clarification about that incident that - incident did
not occur - did appear in Gomantak one year later and the editor of Gomantak
was Gadkari. I remember this because after this news we the college mates
did heavy discussions on Gadkari's reporting! ( Have a re-look at my
original posting which I had written i.e. Here I am not contesting as to
which of the two versions are correct.)

Regarding WCT (West Cost Times) why I contested the discussion on historical
write-up. One of my beloved friend who was working with WCT suffered a lot
and was not alive to read the last WCT editorial WCT died a brave death
written by last editor of WCT Subhash Desai and there after WCT was closed
for ever. I even recollect the dharnas launched by Goa Union of journalist
in protest of closure of WCT. In WCT case I am sure you know much more than
me!

Wish you happy SUNDAY EASTER

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

(I have nothing to lose nor gain or take to heart about historical facts ( I
don't know about you?) and if you have to ? I am ready to take any
platform with prior appointment with me. I am not JC to thresh every line
and every word of the message!!!)

Attached:

MY FIRST RESPONSE:

Dear Mr. Valmiki two humble corrections to your two posts that appeared in

Goanet dated March 9, 2008 March 16, 2008?

First correction is regarding a story that you mentioned in Goa's Editors -

3 about a Catholic fisherwoman from Margao fish market and that of Margao

Business man. I recollected and sort reconfirmation that this story was

carried by Romi Konkani Daily named Uzwad when Mr. Felicio Cardozo was the

reporter of that daily and Editor was Mr. Evagrio Jeorge. Mr. Felecio

Cardozo was not the Editor those days.

And for your information, Marathi Daily of the same business house named

Gomantak whose editor then was Mr. Gadkari published exactly opposite story

year later saying - after detail investigations we have come to conclusion

that such incidence never occurred in Margao at Monte Hill. This

clarification was carried by Gomantak and not by Uzwad. Here I am not

contesting as to which of the two versions are correct. I am only trying to

cite what had appeared in dailies during those days and who were the editors

those days.

Second correction is regarding West Cost Times (WCT) in Goa's Editors-4:

HERALD (Goa). You made a mention that WCT could not blaze a path-breaking

trail in Goa's journalistic history. That's true, but you have not given the

factual behind this. WCT was paying almost double the salary to its

reporters and above officials as compared to other local dailies including

Margao daily

Dear Dr. Anand Vigincar,

Anand-bab, Dongor pois suttiant sazre, lagim suttiant kazre. I am
waiting for the interview video to be uploaded by little r. It will be
more revealing. Till then, try this:

Your diagnosis of the ailment that prevented Manohar-bab from being
the CM of Goa for the THIRD TIME in seven years is partially right
like Dr.Silvano Dias Sapeco's first autopsy report on Scarlett
Keeling.

Unlike Scarlett, Manohar-bab and the BJP are alive in Goa ...though
not exactly thriving and may regain power. The failed coups of
July, 2007 and January, 2008 ar not the end of the world. Remember the
story of King Bruce and the spider [Kohli or Wani]. Perhaps, Manohar
bab can learn from the Konkan spiders. So I do not agree with your
prognosis ...though I would work to ensure that it becomes a
self-fulfilling prophesy.

To reduce verbosity, I am truncating your posting below and
interspersing my comments with a short prayer to the almighty
Goanet Admin to approve its line and length and not accuse me of

From: Anand Virgincar [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [Goanet] Why Manohar Parrikar is not CM today...and will
  probablynot be ever

  Dear Goanetters ,

While many anti-BJP personnel on Goanet harbour a blind hatred for the
BJP and Manohar Parrikar ( and are liberal in their propagations of
falsehoods and use of uncivil language in their criticism )

COMMENT: Please name the offenders. Generalisations help not.

over the 12 weeks of my presence on this forum , I have recognised
some who are prepared to engage in a rational discussion. This
posting ( and also the interview with Manohar Parrikar ) is directed
specifically at the latter.

COMMENT: Carry on, Doctor ;-)

Bab Floriano and Dotor Jose Colaco have stated recently that the BJP
would have been in power longer if only Manohar had not :
1 ) Come to power via coups rather than the ballot box.
2 ) Tried to remain in power using unconstitutional means ( and this
refers , I presume , to the Feb 05 Satarkar / Neri episode in the main )
3 ) Associated himself with nefarious elements ( and I assume , Babush
Monseratte heads the list here )
COMMENT:
 1. Factually correct for 2000 A.D [7 B.P] but NOT for 2002 A.D., when
Matanhy's objection to the Congress left the UGDP group of 3 MLAs no
choice as to whom to support. Congress should take the rap for that
...it also put the worst candidates possible.
2. The Satra-attra kar that was declared 18-6 was a blot on the Goa
Legislature. It remains so. It is another matter that the Cogress
actually promoted the then Marshall P.I. Mahesh Gaokar to Dy.S.P.
rank ...and posted him in the CRIME Branch at that.
3. Not just Babush, but Matka king of the South and the Dope King of
the North were cabinet ministers with Manohar-bab ... while another
took the cake for groping in the Black Forests of Belgaum in his
capacity as the Goa Forest Minister. ;-)

The fourth reason is of course ...that of the Hindutva agenda.
COMMENT: Hardly an issue from 1994 [while riding piggy-back on MGP]
till the UGDP men were absorbed in 2004

YET , the BJP were not voted back to power. This a a summary of why
( in my opinion ) Manohar Parrikar is not in the CM's chair today
and will probably never be :

1 ) MP did not ( and will not ) allow uncontrolled corruption .
COMMENT: Pure BULL ...except if the coruption was actually controlled
[as in managed] by him.

2 ) MP did not ( and will not ) cater to the personal agenda's of
individuals the way Congressmen do.
COMMENT: Also BULL. Matka, dope, raves, haftas continued unabated
during BOTH the stints of BJP rule: 2000-2002 and 2002-2005 [January]

3 ) MP was dictatorial during his term. That is exactly what is required
of a leader in Goa today. However , the super-ego's in the bureucreatic and
political set up in Goa do not enjoy this , thus adding to the list of
his political foes.
COMMENT: Dictatorship is good if the Dictator can be shot dead at the
end of one term. was a comment by an expert during a discussion on
the forms of gevernance. Well, I like Manohar-bab. So what if he
messed his second term? He makes a good Leader of the Opposition! May
he live long and prosper in that post forever. Amen.
It is another matter that the cabinet colleagues did not like the
mini- Dictator during the second term ...many of them were aspiring
for that role, themselves. ;-)

4 ) MP and the BJP cannot match the money and muscle power of the
Congress in general. In addition , there are some constituencies like
  Taleigao ,

MONDAY MUSE (24 March 2008)

SOUP?

Job Interviews are conducted to assess a potential employee to see if he/she
has the required competencies and attitude. And in recent times, innovative
situations are created to assess the reflexes and responses to find out who is
better than the rest. Just consider the following case:

All the candidates for managerial positions are educated about the
organisation’s vision, mission and systems through a striking audio visual
presentation. Next the presenter announces, “Ladies and Gentlemen, the
interview shall commence after a 30 minute recess. Till then, help yourself to
some delicious soup.”

Everyone begins to queue up at the serving table… even those who do not want
the soup, choose not to be part of a slight. The atmosphere is one of
discipline… no pushes and shoves… smiles flash around… everyone knows they are
being watched and hence the best behaviour is out on display.

The bowl is gracefully lifted… a prompt “thank-you” is uttered as the waiter
pours the soup… One moves further, to gracefully add a series of additives that
await… chilly sauce, vinegar, pepper, salt, etcetera. The assessment is
complete! Everyone who adds without tasting and checking out whether the soup
actually requires add-ons find themselves in hot soup as far as the interview
is concerned

In the quest to assess who is better, the ones who fall aside are the ones who
use resources without considering whether they are needed. To BE BETTER than
the rest, we must ensure that our behaviour is based on situational thinking
instead of perfunctory behaviour. And we have to start with unlearning habits
and embracing a responsive approach that shuns the mechanical unthinking.

We must unlearn habits of mechanical inclination,
To BE BETTER lets indulge in responsive action.

The Hindu, 24 March 2008

Deconstructing tourism image of Goa

Maria Aurora Couto

The recent tragedy in Goa exposes degradation of coastline and
human resource.

The immense media focus on young Scarlette Keeling’s death has
exposed the degradation that has seeped into the fabric of Goan
society, predominantly along the coastal belt in north Goa.
However, her tragic death only points to a disease that has
afflicted Goa for more than a decade. It is to be hoped that the
sequence of developments will expose a nexus of perpetrators who
have raped the pristine beaches, and lured a significant section
of the youth into drugs. It is a disease spread through the very
construction of the image of Goa as a tourist paradise, a party
place, Goa-where-anything-goes. And the pickings have been rich
for the powerful, their underlings and the middlemen spread across
the globe, within the nation and of course within Goa.

Historically there has been an image of Goa and Goans constructed
by British historians and travellers such as Richard Burton in the
19th century. They despised the failure of Portuguese colonialism
and hence despised Goan culture — of which they knew nothing. They
created the stereotype of a mixed race, of temple dancers, women
of easy virtue, hard drinkers, a people with no history and no
culture. This stereotype has been reworked in our time by Nirad C.
Chaudhuri and V.S. Naipaul, and in Bollywood films. Yet we Goans
know we are by and large a law-abiding society, with strong family
values. The temples and churches are overflowing, the festivals
are celebrated with a typically Goan combination of élan and deep
spirituality, and our village life is vibrant and active.

Writers and artists have chosen to make Goa their home. Amitav
Ghosh, who now has a home in Goa, feels it is the special quality
of the Goan people, their warmth and cosmopolitanism, that draws
people here.

Contradictory perspectives
How, then, does one make sense of these two contradictory
perspectives? What is of concern to me is that the image of Goa
constructed to sell tourism has been sedulously cultivated to
reinvent for modern times the perverted stereotype constructed
since the 19th century or earlier. The notoriety, the quiet wink
and knowing look that have been inseparable from the idea of Goa
in certain circles, appears to have been co-opted to sell tourism
with a kind of tacit understanding that much will be condoned. And
these same forces collude to keep the party going, to ignore the
crimes, and the despair of a law-abiding population that finds
itself trapped between a description of its homeland as one of the
best States in the country in terms of human resource development
yet also is host to paedophiles, drug pushers, and most recently,
gambling, to lure yet another kind of tourist, a State with a high
rate of literacy second only to Kerala yet with a 40 per cent
dropout rate, and an equal percentage of the educated unemployed.

I lived in Goa in 1962 soon after its liberation when people
flocked from our metropolitan cities to buy foreign goods and
cheap liquor. Goa itself was not taken seriously except as a place
to have a good time. The scene is no better today. There is a
sense in which the national tourist ‘others’ the Goan. We are an
open society, cosmopolitan, with fewer inhibitions in the sense
that we are informal, love music and dance, with time for leisure
built into a hardworking day. And perhaps more crucially, there is
an easy informality between the sexes, which is wildly
misunderstood by the Indian tourist, in particular, who often
arrives to let go of his own inhibitions, drawn by the media image
of “in Goa anything goes.”

Figures show that the consumption of liquor by tourists in a day
in the high season is more than is consumed by Goans in a whole
year — although drunkenness is now disrupting family life more
than ever before.

Goa has suffered many shocks which have rocked the stability of
its society, which is essentially feudal, and its ancient system
of land-holding known as communidade. Both received a mortal blow
from insensitive land reforms. As a result, rich agricultural
lands are lying fallow — and a great deal of it has been converted
by unscrupulous politicians into settlement zones. Hence there has
been a huge diversion of agricultural land to satisfy the greed of
national and international players for real estate. One reads of a
sale in Delhi earlier this month at an “Extensive Goa Property
Show.” Goans know nothing about this, nor do they know to whom the
land belongs. Simultaneously, a signature campaign is

Dear Overseas Goans Organisations,

There are many Goan Organisations worldwide involved in many goodwill
services to our Community. To each Organisation; we need to address a
priority on a urgent basis i.e. to mobilise a mass awareness among overseas
Goans to protect Goa's Identity; else we will no longer have a place to call
home. The time to act is now!!

This awareness programme needs to be well planned co-ordinated to spread
the facts; This is very important as many Overseas Goans are unaware of the
facts threatening our identity. People will only act
if they are aware.

Goans generally appear to have resigned themselves to loosing their
Identity. If this is the case, then we should stop creating/having Goan
organisations/Forums, as in my view what is the point; if we
carry on as we are; soon without a Goa with Goan Identity, all these
organisations/forums will not be relevant!!

I request each Overseas Goan Organisation to initiate spreading the said
awareness amongst as many Goans as possible, in their respective
country/region.

Arwin Mesquita,
Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Dear Goanetters,

So, with the long ramble below, what is the writer trying to say -- that I
should
have sought and quoted his learned views in my column, and having failed to
do so, was why what I wrote all wrong? What was it that he tried to clarify
in
the first place? I seem to be dealing with a confused mind. If what he meant
to clarify (or rather ask) was why, when I was talking of Goa's Editors, I wrote
about that rare Margao Monte scandal unearthed by Felicio Cardoso, who
according to Mr. Barad was a Reporter (and not an EDITOR) at the time,
I clearly stated in my first reply to him that I may have erred in thinking
Felicio
was Editor at that point of time. The words may have were intentional, for
I knew that Felicio was Editor -- and a respected one at that -- for a better
part
of his journalistic life, starting with the 'Divtti' in 1966.

I conceded to having possibly erred because to check the 'Uzvadd' and 'Divtti'
archives, all the way in Panjim, over such a minor issue, was, imho, not worth
the time and effort.

Mr. Barad's second clarification was on issues altogether unrelated to
Editors...
like salaries of Reporters at WEST COAST TIMES and reasons for its closure
-- based on grossly false premises that Mr. Barad claimed, or at least
pretended,
to know. Here again, as humbly and as docilely as I could, I explained how he
was
wide off the mark. (Even in his latest post below, he exposes his ignorance,
claiming that Subhash Dessai -- never mind it was Suresh -- was that paper's
last Editor. Let him lie in his bliss. I will only assert that it was a British
hippie
hired as an editor, who presided over the WCT's demise, not Suresh!)

Mr. Barad then suddenly comes off at a tangent, with incoherent generalities,
talking about 'HEARTS' (his caps) and alluding to the fact that I happen to live
almost next door to one of Goa's better known cardiologists. Instead of trying
to refute me with facts, as he knows them.

Mr. Barad might have forgotten I was on facts alone, not opinions, and since
he seemed intent to press with his mistaken impressions, I told him I was ready
to debate the issues on a public forum of his choice -- to preclude a needless
'ad nauseum' debate at this forum. My offer stands.

If I get him at a public forum, I promise to unmask either or both his
ignorance/
deliberate untruths. If he is the son of the same Comba garage owner, Barad,
who had two sons one of who was my classmate at Loyola and a younger, who
I knew at Damodar Commerce, then I agree the present Mr. Barad and I should,
as he claims, be about the same age, and at that age, and thrilled about the
Monte escapade. But, when he talks of the WEST COAST TIMES, he could go
to town and tell it to the marines: I was there, he was not. (I am convinced he
is
capable of coming off with another one on this fact too!)

Mr. Barad ought to know that if he is hell-bent on making a laughing stock of
himself, I won't stop him. If he wants to have the last word, I will let him: I
am not
going to spend any further time (and readers' patience) attempting to either
correct or refute him, except debate with him in public, preferably before an
audience of objective current Editors in Goa. -v

PS: Comments and criticism of my Sunday HERALD column being re-posted
on this forum is most welcome. Only retain the original subject line if you want
that I should read it (or mail me privately.) Some responses, with a changed
subject line, were brought to my notice by third-party acquaintances. At least
on
this score, I must commend Mr. Barad for not substantially changing the subject
line, and that's how I came to read and respond to his post. Thank you! -v

On Sun, 23 Mar 2008 Dr.U.G.Barad wrote :

Scarlett Keeling's mother goes into hiding
By Caroline Gammell
Last Updated: 5:40pm GMT 23/03/2008

The mother of the murdered teenager Scarlett Keeling has gone into
hiding, saying that she fears for her safety after criticising the
investigation into her daughter's death in southern India.
Fiona MacKeown, 43, said she wanted court protection after stirring
up a hornet's nest in Goa by accusing police officials, politicians
and local drugs mafia of a cover-up.

A pathologist's report has been published concluding that the
15-year-old had drowned after being forcibly submerged in water for
five to 10 minutes.

The traces of drugs and alcohol found in her body were not enough to
cause death.

The report, conducted at Goa Medical College by the government's chief
pathologist, contradicted initial police findings that she had
accidentally drowned.

Miss MacKeown, who was accused of negligence after leaving Scarlett
with friends at the time of the murder, has repeatedly criticised the
police investigation.

The mother-of nine said that both she and her lawyer had been warned
that she might be in danger: We've been warned by a lot of locals to
be careful, she said. We've been stirring up a big hornet's nest
here. The drug people are not going to be very happy with me.

 From: Anand Virgincar [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [Goanet] Why Manohar Parrikar is not CM today...and will
   probablynot be ever

The 'whitewash Parrikar' campaign is clearly getting increasingly
desperate as is obvious from the note of hysteria that is creeping
in, and the increasing one-point obsession with that particular
politician. Come on guys, there's life beyond Manohar Parrikar...

While many anti-BJP personnel on Goanet harbour a blind hatred for the
 BJP
and Manohar Parrikar ( and are liberal in their propagations of
 falsehoods
and use of uncivil language in their criticism )

That's hilarious. The worst offender in terms of uncivil language
is one r, who precedes his warm regards with reams of intemperate
abuse that make me fear for his blood pressure.

While all the above reasons are entirely valid to some extent , I submit
 that
the principal reasons why Manohar and the BJP are not in power today are
related to the electoral demograhics and economic interests of Goans (
 and
not any of the above )

Just say it straight like Vinay Natekar did -- because Manohar
Parrikar and the BJP are a bunch of angels and a collection of
no-hopers like the Goan voters don't deserve them! This complex
charade of pretending to criticize while putting people up on a
pedestal is rather tedious. How one wishes for the good ole days
of one Carmo D'Cruz with his 'Vivas' which were at least simple,
direct, and to the point.

2 ) Manohar Parrikar and the BJP had made significant compromises on
the Hindutva agenda , not just in issuing an apology for errors made in
 the
way minority issues were handled but also in going out of the way to
reassure minority communities ( the latter was obvious throughout the
 election campaign ).

This is news to me. You probably missed attending the election
meetings of BJP candidates, where one did not notice any dilution
of the Hindutva agenda.

Even assuming that this did happen during the election campaign,
what does it mean? Spend the rest of the time hassling minorities,
and woo them during election campaigning?

5 ) While the so called communal incidents were a factor , none of them
were of such serious nature that they would dictate that Manohar and
 the
BJP were untouchable for the minorities. Furthermore , in the 2
 years
out of power , no major communal issues were fuelled by the BJP .

Sanvordem-Curchorem communal violence happened in March 2006.

YET , the BJP were not voted back to power ( it being besides the point
that the Congress were not voted back to power either , only forming a
government with the help of the Vishwajits, Dhavalikars , Churchills
 and Babushs )

This is meaningless. By the same token, in 2002 the BJP was not
voted to power either but only formed a government with the help
of Babushs, Dhavalikars, etc.

This a a summary of why ( in my opinion ) Manohar Parrikar is not in
the CM's chair today and will probably never be :

And now follows: MP and the BJP are angels and angels don't get
the CM's chair. Talk about whitewash jobs. Also plenty of wild,
unsubstantiated allegations without any names/details, so it's
pointless getting into that.

10 ) Most importantly , only a fraction of genuinely educated and
 politically
aware Goans are politically active. The rest are content with endless
 and
 pointless sermonising.

Mr Anand Virgincar excepted, presumably, who spends his time in
'politically active' grassroots campaigning?

 Problem is , as
far as some Goan voters go , for MP and BJP to make any error is
 unforgiveable
..while the Congress is so divine that all their errors are
 easily forgiveable.

This gets weirder and weirder. Just go through goanet's archives
for the past few months, and you will see about 10 posts
whitewashing the BJP and co. to one whitewashing the Congress and
co. The way of coping with one's problems here appears to be that
of projecting them on to others.

John Fernandes, Quepem

If Smt. Tereza Travasso resigns as Chairperson of Quepem Municipal Council
we will find a solution to the garbage problem within 48 hours stated
opposition councilor at a press conference today.

That the Quepem Municipal council since last more than 2 months have not
regularly lifted the garbage from the town which given rise to many
problems. Even the municipal garbage truck which were filled with garbage last
about 25 days back have not been emptied and are on the verge of corroding.

At a press conference which was attended by councilor Rahul Pereia, Caty
Fernandes, Narayan Gaonkar and Antoneta Simoes stated that if the council
failed to lift the Garbage by Wednesday, they will to highlight the issue
will stage a morchea on the council on Thursday 27/3/2008) for which they have
appealed to the people of Quepem town to join them at 10.00 AM near fish
market.

They alleged that the Chairperson though representing the town is purposely
not finding any solution to the garbage problem presently faced by the town as
she wants to be on the chair and the present garbage problem is her trick to
keep other candidate way from claiming the chairmanship post. Stated the
councilors further .

At all the last three meeting of the council we have suggested and requested
the chairperson Smt. Tereza Travasso to call a meeting of the Pedamol villagers
who are opposing the garbage dumping site , along with all the councilor to
find a solution. But the chairperson has not paid any hid to their suggestion
nor called find any meeting to find a solution to the problem. They claim that
Quepem can’t march forward under her leadership.

Councillor Nana Gaonkar alleges that the Quepem MLA Shri Chandrakant Kavlekar
is also not concerned about the problem as not finding any solution to it . If
he is realy concerned than he would called a meeting of all the councilors to
try to find a solution to the same, which he has not yet done.

Dears,

Most writers use whatever figures come to their mind ...and impress
the ignorami. Rajdeep may well be talking about 10,000K Yen ...now
that Lira have made way for the Euro.

Scarlett is the colour of the season . that one's clothes turn Red
in the open-cast iron ore mining belt amidst the virgin rainforests,
is NOT something that Rajdeep Sardesai is about to write or talk about
just yet. That topic is still among the murmurs in the NGO circuit.

Shall we beard the Lion in his own den? We even have a mine-owner as
an MLA in the current Goa Legislative Assembly ...and plenty of them
have their proxies, right to the top! If you think the MGP or the BJP
or the Congress ruled Goa, think again. Goa is ruled by the mining
lobby [which also owns most of the industries and some of the
newspapers in Goa] by proxy.

Rajdeep has stated in this article that he is proud to be a Goan
[may even sing Basilio Magno's song of that name on this WGD] ... and
even offered to build a house near KINGFISHER villa [surrogate
advertising?] for anyone who shows him a daughter of a fisherman
wearing 'shorts' or a bikini like Dimple Kapadia in Bobby [tempting
enough for me since I know a few girls of the Kharvi community,
certified as such for admission to professional courses, who indeed
wear shorts, swim suits and bikinis] and the grapevine has it
that Rajdeep has a plot of land closer to Baga-Calangute. May be we
could swap that plot for a photo of a Kharvi belle in a bikini ...or
mandakini! In the meanwhile, Scarlett teri Mama maili is the
refrain of the Goa Police and Home Minister.

Shall we now shout mine. minE, miNE, mINE , MINE ! or just read
Dr.Claude Alvares' book GOA: this Sweet land of MINE. to
familiarise ourselves with the visuals and issues?

Mog asundi.

Miguel
PS

It would be nice for those who want to discuss mining in Goa to at
least view Rajendra Talak's film ALEESHA [starirng Priyanka and
Prashanti Talpankar] being screened at the ESG's auditorium in the
Maquinez Palace [old FDA building in the old GMC complex], near INOX,
Panaji. the DVD/VCD costs just Rs.250/- thee film is in Konkani but
the visuals tell the story well enough.

Subject: [Goanet] Goan with the Wind (by Rajdeep Sardesai)

1. Goa's tourism industry - earning the state approximately 10,000 crores in
foreign exchange per annum -- has been at the heartof the modern-day
mythification of the state as some form of a sexual paradise.

Rs 10K crores for 2.5 million tourists may also be high. Rs3K-4K
crores may be OK.

2. the real threat to Goa's cultural identity does not lie inthe lifestyle
of the tourist, confined as they are to a small stretchof the state. In
fact, in a state with limited employment opportunities, Goa needs to attract
more, not less tourists.

3It isn't the influx of tourists whichshould trouble Goans as much as the
growing influence of the builders and construction agents who appear
determined to destroy the state's environmental treasure in violation of all
existing laws. While Goa's politicians go into cataclysms over the Scarlett
case, how many of them have bothered to raise their voice against the virtual
auction ofthe state to land sharks?

Here we need to understand the value chain on which tourism occurs.
And btw, how come the mining industry which has been degrading the
environment here for decades gone unnoticed?

People now don't leave their homes without umbrellas
Because, it's almost like July/August in Goa

3 days now (from Good Friday) it's raining.
It also rained heavily a week before that.

Open air weddings or functions?

You better think twice!!

This is what I remember while I was at school (STD II or III)
from Balbharati English book
A girl named 'Zarina' saying this

Rain rain go-away
Come again on another day

Does anybody else remember?

 Dear Goanetters,
I made a statement yesterday similar to the one in the subject line
above.
Have a look at the number of postings since then which justify my
claim.

 # One poster says that the superimposition of the dates for IFFI 2004
by
MP on the dates for St Xavier's feast was malevolent and malicious
Agreed. The fact that the exposition during MP's term was the best
organised one ever is irrelevant to this particular point.
What about the Congress goverment doing the same ? IFFI this year,
for instance , had the concluding ceremony on the exact date as the St.
Xavier's feast ( with resultant traffic chaos ).
 That's OK , is it ?

 # The inquisition VCD makes another appearance on Goanet with ( quite
rightly in my opinion ) , the major fault being pointed out was that it
was
 screened for impressionable school children.
Agreed ( for the nth time ) that this was a major error on MP's part.
What about the year X textbook currently in the news ? Does that not
stink of minority communalism by the Congress ?
 That's OK , is it ?

 # The misappropriation of funds during IFFI 2004 has again been
brought
 up prominently
Agreed, there was leakage of funds. Also, significant addition to the
infrastructure occured and a world class event was organised from
 scratch.
 What about IFFI 2005 / 2006 / 2007 organised by the Congress ?
More expenditure occured on each of these events than in IFFI 2004
( with little or no addition to the infrastructure )
 That's OK , is it ?

 # And one poster has been commended by another for stating that all
and sundry would vote for BJP if the party moved away from their
 Hindutva constitution ?
Disagree on this one. The reasons Goan's do not vote for BJP are much
more complex. The Hindutva agenda is certainly a problem but has been
used as a convenient weapon by anti-BJP propagandists who have other
reasons to keep MP and BJP out of power.
How about telling the Congress to stick to their constitution ? Have
they
not engaged in minority communalism ( not to mention unimaginable
corruption ) in every term they have been in power ?
 That's OK , is it ?

 regards,
 anand

Ignoring Gilbert's use of potty language and

Adam and Eve in a lay summary of some scientific data

This religious mischaracterization of science reveals
another dimension of a conflict between religion and
science, which is more evident than ever in Fr. Ivo's
latest post on Goanet.

explanation:
for Nicholas D'Souza!

a liitle picture of
a goan tea-service.
bosh = dish;

diamonds are forever is a famous line

really does need you and don't allow anyone to tell you differently !

We desperately miss your 'joie de vivre', notwithstanding the upside

It ain't making the heart fonder :-(( . I am all distraught, I really
do miss you posts as does M.P.
