[Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY -2008 - GOA
0 World Goa Day The Children celebrated World Goa Day. Rene Barreto continues to champion World Goa Day and invited us to join i once again this year. The have been heavy rains in Goa over the last month and we were very lucky with no rain on the day. The young children were taken on a little outing to the park in the morning and then the children were split into three groups, which revolved around three different activities. Inside there were drawing World Goa Day posters and making friendship bracelets, outside there was 5 a side football / dodge ball (depending on how much energy the groups had and finally parachute games in the forest. The day saw a beautiful chicken curry lunch and fruit and ice cream in the evening. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff for all their help and I wish everyone a happy "World Goa Day"... http://www.childrenwalkingtall.com/Pictures9.htm = rene barreto - WORLD GOA DAY -WORLD ALLIANCE OF GOAN ASSOCIATIONS ===

[Goanet] Professor Raheja coming to Goa to "educate" Goans !
To Goanet - Will wonders never cease? Raheja is coming to town to educate Goans. The real question is: what is Raheja still doing in Goa after Digu declared 8 months ago that SEZs were out? See - * http://tinyurl.com/6z9w4h Daijiworld Media Network - Goa (MR) By Our Special Correspondent Panaji, Aug 21: K Raheja corp, India's leading special economic zone (SEZ) developer, has decided to initiate confidence building measures with the Goan population educating them about their non-polluting project beneficial to the local population. Raheja's IT SEZ planned at Verna industrial estate faced stern opposition from the locals and state government even after it was notified by the union commerce ministry's board of approval. The state government has written to the union commerce ministry seeking to denotify Raheja's SEZ along with two others. "We are here to educate people of Goa regarding our project. It is not bad for Goa as it will have BPOs, KPOs, call centres and other units which will employ local youths," Shabbir Kanchwala, vice president (Project-Coordination), K Raheja Corp, stated. The anti-SEZ agitators this week had mobbed Raheja's staff at the site forcing them labourers to move out from this project site where according to the company Rs 192 crore have been invested. The company officials have decided to initiate dialogue with the Goan prominent citizens, media, policy makers and even the protestors weeding out `misconceptions' about their projects. "People are misinformed about our project. We will put across to the people how the project will benefit the local population," he said. "The project will be the best in the world and will not burden the state infrastructure. WE will have captive power plant within the place and also will sewerage treatment plant besides rain harvesting," Kanchwala said. He said the project would stop the braindrain from the state especially of the young IT professionals who have to migrate to the other states. "We will generate 5,000 jobs for the first year and in phases, the employment will increase up to 25,000," the vice president said. The company which plans its SEZs at eleven places including Ahmadabad, Navi Mumbai, Hyderbad, Baroda besides others, feels that the Goa is an attractive destination for the IT projects. He said that the Goa project will have companies like Ocwen, 3G, CFC international setting up their shops here providing huge job opportunities to the locals. K Raheja Corp, which is fighting a case against the Goa Industrial development corporation's show cause notice to revoke the land allotted to them at the industrial estate, has said that the company has invested huge time and money in the project. Kanchwala, when questioned refused to comment on whether the company would shift from Goa, if the state government provides them the compensation. *

[Goanet] Fwd: Take a look...
-- Forwarded message -- From: Hartman de Souza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 7:50 AM Subject: Fwd: [Goanet] Take a look... To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Mario Goveia, George Pinto, Rajan P. Parrikar, if you honourable gentlemen are ever in Pune please look me up and I will cook you guys the meal of your choice. The beer, I assure you guys will not come out of you-know-who's breweries! Attached duly, the other side of you know who's violations. Interesting slide show and even signed/endorsed by him... Here too, following below the text that accompanied the slide show as it was forwarded to me then: *Subject:* the "re-"colonisation of Goa The "Re-"colonisation of Goa Rajiv Desai It's a lazy Sunday afternoon in Ucassaim. We are sitting in the garden with our friends, Wendell and Jerome. It is surprisingly cool and a gentle breeze is swaying the coconut palms; another bucolic day in our charming little village. Wendell is holding forth on the Delhi invasion of Goa. "I welcome them if they buy old houses and restore them with their money," he says. "But I draw the line when they make marble and granite palaces in the garish style of Greater Kailash (a South Delhi suburb known for its kitschy homes)." More and more people in this idyllic state are beginning to feel like Wendell. The nearby village of Assegao, for example, has been virtually annexed by Delhi's high fliers, who have renovated old homes into luxury dwellings. At the other end of the spectrum, blocks of Mumbai-style apartments have sprouted. The "re-"colonisation of Goa is underway. What is emerging has little to do with the place itself and its unique culture. In the upper reaches, it is beginning to resemble the Bahamas, while the apartments and resorts for the middle classes are sleazy Thailand-style developments. The "re-"colonisation of Goa is a problem, because it ignores the local traditions and culture. So the apartment dwellers live their Mumbai lives and the wealthy in Assegao and Dona Paula import their own little designer existence. Which is worse? The common indictment is that at both ends of the socioeconomic spectrum, everyone seems to want to live in Goa. But they want no contact with the local culture, except as service providers: real estate agents, drivers, gardeners, electricians, waiters, caretakers. For settlers at the lower end, Goa is about booze, babes and beaches; at the higher end, it is about the tacky Kingfisher Villa and being invited to one of Vijay Mallya's frothy parties. Everyone wants a house in Goa. It's like owning a BMW or a Maruti: a statement they have arrived. They may own designer houses or concrete apartments. But they don't seem to have a home. Whether it's high end villas or cramped apartments, the settlers come and go, wrapped in their own little cocoons: some with Louis Vuitton luggage; others with plastic Samsonite bags. People from all over the country and the world flock to this idyllic place. While most Goans make them feel welcome; some are beginning to ask questions. Visitors and settlers alike form their own little ghettos in which local people are not included. Among the most insular are Europeans, followed by the Page 3 set. We had an experience in a kitschy place called Panchavati, owned by a Belgian woman called Loulou near the beautiful village of Aldona. It is a resort billed as a 'guest house retreat' that does not welcome any others than Europeans and rich and famous Indians. Similarly, at a European-owned shack at Arambhol beach, we waited patiently. No waiter came to take our order; frustrated and angry, we finally left. Never mind Belgians, Germans, Russians and Israelis, even Indians from Delhi and Bombay are setting up enclaves that block out the local culture. They build real and virtual walls; as such, they go against the grain of the inclusive local culture of this wonderful haven. These are the people we didn't see at the Black and Red Dance in Panjim on the last night of the Carnival. This is a traditional Goan event of celebration in advance of Lent, the 40-day period of abstinence before Easter. The bands were superb; the evening was cool. From nine in the evening to two in the morning, we were suffused with camaraderie. We ate, drank and danced with abandon…in the streets of Goa's capital city. What could be more community-minded than a Conga line at the street dance in Panjim, where strangers, men and women alike, held hands and swayed to the music? No drunken lewdness, no fights, no sexual harassment; only fun and dance and occasional shouts of "Viva Goa!" Rajiv Desai Okay, back to me again, and my offer of a meal in Pune and why... The truth of the matter is that the man is a pirate out and out. It is more than just ironic that his violations are close to those of the other villain in the piece's River Princess. That's not all though: The Majorda Beach Resort continues to screw the beach to the left facing the sea while they en

[Goanet] People more important than infrastructure --- Narayan Murthy
Samir Kelekar wrote: > When Digambar means development, he means infrastructure. Here, Narayan Murthy says that talent is anyday more important than infrastructure. Today, Monseratte talks about building campuses for education. What is the point of the big buildings if duds are going to learn in them? obviously, one knows why ministers want big buildings or real estate projects. > How can we bring the above fact mentioned by Narayan Murthy --- that talent is anyday more important than unnecessary infratructure --- to the center of the debate? > Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2008 10:51:20 +0530 From: "Philip Thomas" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Murthy is only echoing what IBM's chief said years ago: Take all IBM infrastructure but leave its people and IBM will return to its former glory. The Japanese companies also laid great store by their "valued members" and worked assiduously to build corporate core competences for the long term survival and continuity of their firms. The lesson for Goa is that it needs both -- thinking and hard working people, on the one hand, as well as well thought out, well operated and well maintained infrastrucure (garbage, electricity, water supply, sewerage and drainage, air connectivity, local transport, roads etc etc) for the long haul, on the other. Both go hand in hand though on balance people would always have the edge as Murthy rightly implied. > Mario observes: > Samir, > Without the appropriate buildings and teachers and modern equipment even the talent may become duds:-)) Like a broken clock even politicians like Digambar and Monserrate can be right sometimes:-)) > There seems to be a tendency in this thread so far to confuse well managed private corporations with a chaotic democratic state like Goa. > In my opinion, both talent and infrastructure are equally essential. Saying that one is more important than the other is like saying an automobile engine is more important than the car it is designed to drive. The car is not going anywhere without its engine, and the engine is going nowhere without the car. > Narayan Murthy knows this, even as he espouses his nuanced platitudes for public consumption. Even Narayan Murthy will have to use his existing talent to improve his corporate infrastructure to attract the new talent he is looking for. > A government, too, should focus on improving the infrastructure it is responsible for, not just roads and buildings but things like security and law enforcement and an independant judiciary, remove bureaucratic and economic obstacles from the path of enterprising individuals like oppressive tax rates and permit and license procedures, and the talent, which is always looking for attractive alternatives, will automatically follow. > Unfortunately, in Goa, there seems to be lax enforcement of zoning laws and building codes as a function of entrenched corruption and voters who continue to elect lousy politicians. > There was a darn good reason for the brain drain. It was called Fabian socialism, which drew its inspiration from Marxism. Once Manmohan Singh and other enlightened leaders began to chip away at the socialist obstacles that were in place, i.e. the oppressive economic infrastructure, the economy revived, tax compliance continues to improve, the brain drain began to slow down and, if the improvements continue, it MAY eventually reverse itself. Up to a point. Because India still has a very long way to go to catch up after all those wasted 50 years that caused the brain drain. > Remember, the Marxists and extreme socialists are still in the mix in India, and their failed ideas and siren songs should never again be allowed to create the economic disincentives that once held India back. > "A socialist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-socialist is someone who understands Marx." - adapting and paraphrasing Ronald Reagan. >

[Goanet] Price of battery cells in Goa (was Freedom)
Gabriel writes >Don't know about microwaves or TVs, but Duracells in Delhi were 2 * cost of >>the same package obtained in Goa, last April. And in Agra? 3 * the cost - >>the printed price was craftily cut off or blacked out. Dont know about Delhi, but in Bangalore a button cell (It was some foreign make) cost Rs. 10/-, while the same one cost Rs. 30/- in Margao. This was about a year back. I believe there may be a great profit to be made by just getting stuff from Bangalore and Mumbai and selling in Goa. In fact, that is what the migrant vendors do. Even things like garments are brought from Mumbai/Bangalore and sold in Goa. There are hardly any malls in Goa. Now, retail giants are coming to Goa in a big way. The people who benefit most are those real-estate people who have show rooms to rent out. Banks are also coming to Goa in a big way, if they haven't already. Talk about computer equipment. I have hardly seen a retail computer and parts showroom in Goa. I am sure there are, but not so obviously known. regards, Samir

[Goanet] Goa Church Cautious About Laws To Protect Old Goa
Goa Church Cautious About Laws To Protect Old Goa OLD GOA, India (UCAN) -- Church people in Goa have taken a cautious stand on a government proposal to protect Old Goa, the onetime Portuguese colonial base and center of Catholic mission in Asia. Government officials of this western Indian state discussed a new master plan for Old Goa at a July 17 meeting. It reportedly aims to check encroachment in the vicinity of Old Goa's church complex. The proposal would ban new construction within two kilometers of the complex and restrict construction within a wider radius. Father Francis Caldeira, who heads the Diocesan Center for Social Communication Media, spoke with UCA News on July 25. He said archdiocesan officials had discussed the plan with Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao of Goa and Daman, but the Church has no comment on the plan "for the moment." Even so, Father Caldeira, who represented the Church at the July 17 meeting of 40 officials from 23 government departments, termed the government effort "honest." The priest said the Church wants to see how the government draws up the plan, which he described as still in the initial stage. The government has promised "that all stakeholders will be considered" in drawing up the plan, "so let's wait and see," he added. The Portuguese heritage of Goa and Daman archdiocese, which covers this tiny coastal state, includes several centuries-old church buildings in the Old Goa complex, an area with a radius of about 750 meters. The Portuguese conquered Goa in 1510 and made Old Goa their colonial capital in India. Later, it became the center of Catholic mission. Jesuit Saint Francis Xavier was among the missioners who made Goa the base for their work in Asia. State tourism director Elvis Gomes, whose agency is overseeing the new plan, told UCA News a new master plan for Old Goa is needed urgently. Jesuit Father Savio Barreto, rector of the 16th-century Basilica of Bom Jesu within the Old Goa complex, said a plan to stop indiscriminate construction activity in the vicinity, including mega-projects, "was long overdue". The priest said that just 200 meters from the basilica, which houses the bodily relic of Saint Francis Xavier, a housing complex is being constructed, violating the heritage norms. The authorities now fear the complex will be removed from the list of World Heritage sites, he said, adding that this "would be a great shame." Father Barreto said some "powerful people" have acquired land that once belonged to the Jesuits within the complex. "How they came in possession of this land is a mystery," said the priest, who charged a Hindu minister-turned-land developer is "a prime violator" in the area. The priest also noted a shipyard has also been allowed to construct within the heritage zone, despite objections he made to various authorities.http://www.theindiancatholic.com/report.asp?nid=11024 Goa's Pride - http://www.goa-world.com http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=_Avn6_AepNw&feature=related Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter is presented by Ulysses Menezes, www.goa-world.com and moderated by Gaspar Almeida (since 1994) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fywTuf-9S0k&feature=email

He may not claw members of his own community down, to this end I have no opinion, but he will assure that every other Indian, in the company he works for, gets an unfair shake. That said, I really think this whole "Goan carb xec-xec" story is a figment of our imagination. We are no more crab-like than any other community. We are human beings given to all the vulnerabilities it entails, including hurt sensibilities. To be a community, we have to be blessed with short memories. It's time to move on. Put the convention and the past where it belongs. As a frame of reference for the next one. In my many travels, and I've had a few, I have never come across a Goan who hasn't invited me over to his home, broken bread with me and befriended me. Goans are warm, gracious, have a wonderful joi d'vivre and believe in enjoying life to the fullest. I'm proud to be a Goan. I can never be anything other than a Goan. Greetings! For a research paper exploring the "Fading Art of Goan Gold and Silver Smithy", I'm looking for help/suggestions/contacts for the following: List of museums/ trusts/ individuals/ jewellers who may help gain a historical perspective in the goan gold and silver smithy from 16th to early 20th century. Old Jewellery houses/ museums/ individuals who may be able to help document the various jewellery styles & techniques prevalent in the said period through examination of the relevant pieces that they possess as well as through their collection of old pictures & historical texts. The intent is to assemble as much visual material as possible of Goan gold & silver craft traditions that are extant in the various museums, Goan churches, aristocratic houses and private collections. This also includes photographs/illustrations of the related interest: fabrication process, fabrication units, trading process etc. In essence: besides Museums, am trying to trace people who may want to share their private collections for the documentation purposes. List & contacts of any surviving craftsmen/jewellers engaged in this trade will be especially helpful. Am also trying to get the contacts of Dr. P. P. Shirodkar, former Director, Archives and Archaeology, Government of Goa. If anyone can help with that, I'll be really grateful. Look fwd to your replies/inputs Rgds, Puja Bhargava (New Delhi)
