Well said brother, nbsp; you have certainly spoken your heart out, good going
and very much true, our current politicians have it all b---s, brains and heart
as well but the first two are excessively used for their own benefits and the
latter is kept in a corner for four years and only comes in to the picture just
before elections, after the elections they leave on stone unturned to let the
Aamnbsp; Admi know that they havenbsp; b---s and that too big ones at that
and made of brass as well !!, with their arrogance and rampant corrupt
practices.

nbsp;
In one of my earlier post I did mention about the caste system, it’s a pity
that even after six decades of Independence we have not been able to eradicate
this evil, on the contrary in some parts we are still fighting to be declared
nbsp;ST, SC and BC. All over the world people are fighting for equality and in
India it’s the other way round, this is what India is today and we call
ourselves developed India and as we move into the 21st century religion has
become a barrier or a propaganda tool to amass votes at the cost of innocent
lives. When and where it’s all going to end ? The world’s biggest secular
democracy. Oh no ! Did I miss something nbsp;? “SECULAR”nbsp; democracy, I am
not sure of it any more !!!

nbsp;
I certainly agree with you, that the Dynasty rule has curtailed the emergence
of good, clean and dedicated political leaders. At the last election Congress
had failed to name their PM Candidate till the elections results were declared
and in the other camp too no one was sure whether it would be Maya or Advani or
some one else for that matter, every damn idiot wants power and position
andnbsp; innbsp; the near future too it’s going to be “who can jerk whom”.
This our state at the moment. Pathetic isn’t it ?

[Goanet] Let's learn Konkani:

2008-09-13 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear Joe GoaUK,

The controversy has just turned 21 years old and Cinderella aka
Konkani in the Roman Script has a surfeit of suitors at the Goa
Legislators' Ball. All we have to do now is to find who has the other
shoe or, in the Goan smuggler's style, the other half of the hundred
rupee note! Till then we will only have the rats pull the pumpkin
cariage for some haloween nite.

IT is time for Cinderella to come into the sitting room and occupy the
place of pride. That will happen only when more people speak Konkani
with pride. Thank you Joe, for promoting that.

Konkani amchi mai, Konkani amkam zai [KAMKAZ]. It is already in the
Guinness Book of records through marathon group singing. Sandesh
Prabhudesai and Pundalik Naik are only dreaming of putting Konkani in
to the record books. Sandesh wrote an editorial in the Sunaparant
mocking Eric earlier. Pundalik Naik said so at the Fugdi
competition recently. Acts speak lounder than words. Eric Ozario has
shown what can be done for Konkani in Mangalore. Let the GKA and other
organisations prove their worth in Goa. Criticising is easy;
out-performing is not. Goebellian facts do not last for long.

4. Of the total 26 letters in Englsih, we used only about 22 in konkani

You will see that by adding same vowel to any consonant will give you
more or less the same sound which changes with the first

E.g. Ba, Fa, Ka, La, Ra, Sa etc
Will sound like BAba, FUn, COme, LUmp, RUm, SUn respectively.

Be as in BAby
Bi as in BEE (bees)
Bo as in BOrrow

[Goanet] Goa govt's move to delete heritage monuments raises eyebrows

Goa govt's move to delete heritage monuments raises eyebrows

Panaji, Sep 12 (PTI) Goa government's move to delete fourteen heritage
monuments from the list of protected sites has raised apprehensions
among heritage activists who have termed the deletion as mysterious.
The disappearance is mysterious...Out of 14 monuments, nine are in the
mining zones, Roboni Saha, member of Goa Heritage Action Group (GHAG),
a group active in preserving state's heritage, told reporters here.

GHAG, which has sited the slip in the State Government's notification
issued on August 14, is apprehensive that the ban on mining activity
surrounding these sites may have forced the State Government to delete
them from the list.

Goa has robust iron ore mining industry and is India's largest iron ore
exporter.

The Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1978
and rules, 1980 bans mining activity 300 metres around the heritage
sites.

The heritage activists are worried as of the nine structure, some
including Paleolithic caves in Shigao, 11th century old Narayandeo
Temple in Vichundrem, among others are bang inside the mining zone where
extensive iron ore extraction is going on.

How can the officials miss on such large number of monuments when they
have a full fledged department working for the purpose, Saha
questioned.

The Archives and Archaeology department, however, has clarified that
they have not deleted or denotified anything. PTI

A Silver medalist at the All Kuwait Photography Contest conducted by JVC in

Sir,

Sub: Bridging the Gap between Vasco and Panaji

With reference to the above letter to the editor appearing in the 'Reader's
Angle' , much as we appreciate the futuristic vision of Mr. Ivor Jorge, the
author of the letter, I would like to excerpt an item from the Goa Su-Raj
Party's 'Road Map for Goa' Chapter III [6][e] - General Administration -PWD-
Bridges Fly-Overs, released on August 20, 2005.

Quote
Possibly a suspension bridge to connect Dona Paula plateau to Dabolim/Vasco.
The desirability of connecting all existing ferry points by bridges shall be
examined and acted upon accordingly within a specified time frame. A bridge
to connect North Goa riverine belt to the capital city possibly connecting
Nerul/Verem to Campal/Miramar or Dona Paula plateau in Panjim shall be
considered. Existing ferry points, dual movement ferries shall be introduced
which do not necessitate reversing so that vehicles can enter and exit
without reversing. Pipe-structured bridges such as the ones on the
Guirim-Karaswado highway by-pass shall be replaced by arch bridges, as the
submerged pipes pose hindrance to the free flow of water and is the cause of
siltation of the river beds. Every major intersection of the highway shall
be provided with a fly-over or a subway for vehicular traffic. Pedestrian
crossings shall be built either underground or overhead in order to ensure
the safety of the pedestrians without hindering the free flow of traffic.

Unquote.

BTW, the first Pedestrian crossing over-head bridge to be built will be at
the cruise-boat jetty at Panjim which has been the need of the hour since
many moons ago.

The letter

A LINK between two tourist destinations, a new dawn for two important
cities, and opportunistic choice for the Goan students, commerce, industry
and tourism where the North embraces the South is a bridge from Mormugao
Harbour to Dona Paula.

The so called 'launch' or 'ferry service' that used to be a boon for the
common people to travel from Vasco da Gama to Panaji is no more in
existence. No one has ever raised this issue as much as the fuss that is
being made about the Mopa airport which - whether we like it or not - will
be functional sooner or later.

A good alternative in lieu of the ferry would be a bridge which cuts short
the long travel from Vasco to Panaji City to a mere distance that would
probably take just 20 minutes. The present route is congested and takes
almost 45 minutes. A bridge across to Dona Paula would also mean a diversion
of at least half the traffic on the road.

It would indeed be a blessing in disguise for the tourists that frequent
these tourist hubs - Mormugao Harbour and Dona Paula. It would also be
economically more viable and less time consuming to travel to and fro fro
thousands of workers that are employed across in the big corporate
companies, small commercial units, star hotels, central and state government
undertakings located in and around the port town and the capital city.

It's time now for the Goans to take up this issue and capture the vision and
make the best use of the availability of advanced technology that can build
this state of the art infrastructure.

I beseech the central and state government to envisage and consider the
building of this new bridge in the next budget.

[Goanet] Relatives, measures and relative measurements

2008-09-13 Thread Cecil Pinto
Relatives, measures and relative measurements
Of ice cruts, cycles and Bey Blades
By Cecil Pinto

My eight year old son Desmond likes to quantify everything.

Dada how many more days for my birthday? Which I can correctly
answer, and from then on, with a little help from the inbuilt
calculator in my cellphone, I can even inform Desmond how many hours
and minutes away his birthday in February is, with a certain degree of
exactitude. Dada is a train faster than a cheetah? This takes a
lengthy explanation of long-term vs. short term speed, acceleration
and brake-horse power. But all these queries on speed, magnitude and
similar physical qualities are a breeze to answer when compared to
Desmond's questions regarding money and monetary value.

Let me hark back to when I was Desmond's age. Paper money was a
difficult concept to understand and me, and most of my classmates,
measured value in terms of 'ice cruts' and cycles. Let me explain?

An ice fruit is basically what Americans call a popsicle and Europeans
call an ice lolly, I think. Basically flavoured coloured liquid frozen
around a stick. Ice fruits are purchased from ice fruit factories by
ice fruit vendors who store them in tiffin like cylindrical insulated
metal boxes. These boxes are then hung in bunches on cycle handle bars
and the ice fruits are sold outside schools and at festive occasions.

Nowadays the same thing is done using branded three wheeler
cycle-carts and large rectangular storage containers, but the concept
is the same.

The ice fruit vendors would cycle large distances to arrive in time
for the school interval. They would ring a small bell, not the
standard cycle bell, to announce their presence/arrival. The vendors
would also in a loud nasal tone announce their wares. For some reason
they never ever said Ice Fruit but always some variant like Ice Crut!
Ice Prate! and even Ice Krait!

So now you know what an ice crut is. Sure you get them now but
hygienically packed in a sealed branded colourful printed
paper/plastic pouch and what not, so you cannot really call it an ice
crut anymore. Now when I was in school an ice crut cost 25 paise. I'm
forty one years old, what do you expect? For one rupee you could
purchase what was called a milk candy. Basically a white vanilla ice
cream like substance on a stick. I don't know much about milk candy
because 1) Only the richer boys could afford it regularly 2) It tasted
more like Plaster of Paris mixed with whitewash 3) Maybe I like to
think it tasted that way because I could not afford it and so didn't
want anyone else enjoying it either.

In Aldona the ice crut vendors were Guru and Goddo who used to cycle
the eight kilometers from the Mapusa ice cream factory everyday. In
the monsoons when ice crut were not in demand Guru used to sell two
sizes of samosas, whereas Goddo used to repair umbrellas near the
Mapusa lottery vendors. A young non-Goan boy nick named Girmit was
also selling ice cruts for a while but then changed careers and became
a pilot.

Dada! Ok! Ok! An ice crut therefore became a measure of value. For
example Rs. 5/- was just a vague concept but when we thought of it as
worth 20 ice cruts then we placed a value on it. As we progressed
from primary to secondary school inflation, and desire, caught up and
we proceeded to discuss and conceptualize bigger amounts. Ice cruts
lost value rapidly and became redundant as a currency, like the
Zimbabwean dollar. The next denomination of value was a cycle.

Back then, as with ice cruts, there wasn't much choice in cycles. You
had the standard straightforward gents cycle (Atlas/Hercules) and the
flimsy ones with the curved handles and cable brakes (BSA) for girls
and richer boys. Prices were in the Rs. 400/- to Rs. 500/- range. Give
or take a few ice cruts. So when we admired Joaquim Alvares' father's
gleaming new Fiat car we thought he must indeed be a very rich man to
have paid the equivalent of 200 cycles for it. Between cycles and ice
cruts anything could be put in its correct monetary place.

Dada, I thought you were writing about me?! Ok! Ok! Maybe I'm just
trying to avoid getting to the point because of the obscenely large
money figures Desmond has to deal with. Two years back when watching
Kaun Banega Crorepati he was suitably impressed by the enormousness of
a crore. Also because a million, which he hears regularly on Cartoon
Network, was so much smaller. That it takes ten million to make one
crore makes our very patriotic Desmond feel proud of his country. But
despite that last week when he heard that Sujay's friend has paid one
crore for a three bedroom apartment in Dona Paula it was quite
depressing. Desmond always felt a crore could easily buy a house as
big as a football field, if not bigger.

In addition to this recently Desmond has learnt about currencies and
figured that a million dollars is actually worth four times more than
a crore rupees. That certainly has got our patriotic Desmond very
depressed. But in a way I am

[Goanet] MOUNT MARY FEAST - CHINCHINIM

2008-09-13 Thread godfrey gonsalves

An eerie silence prevails among  the villagers of Chinchinim on the eve of the
Feast of Mount Mary ((which will be celebrated tomorrow Sunday, 14th September,
2008, ) when this writer visited the village this evening.

The usual activity of setting up stalls was missing.  There was a Goa Armed
Police van with armed policemen near the Church.  In front of the cemetry were
several migrants waiting some of them from Orrissa and Karnataka to put up
their stalls the merry-go-round the mobile icecream van -Karavali from Karwar
was also trying to park itself just outside the front of the cemetry.  There
were groups of Goans discussing just near to a police patrol van.  The
intermittent rain and dry spells provided a dampner to the activities.

That there was trouble brewing  in the village, was quite evident..  The All
Goa Carpenters Association around 31 members some of whom are outsiders as
well did not take kindly to the decision of the Fabrica not to allot them
the ground in front of the Church this year.
They cited security threat conditions as the reason for the same.

However according to one member of the Carpenters who spoke to this writer but
refused to divulge his name insisted that they had traditionally occupied the
place and it was not proper for the Committee to allow the garment vendors in
their place. When asked whether the members were all Goans from Benaulim as
made to believe he admitted that there were outsiders who have been with them
for long in the trade.

They also contended that the nearly 2000 m2 land that was specially prepared at
the cost of about Rs, 50,000  just behind the church was not acceptable to
them., as they complained that the unprecedented showers would not be
convenient to transact their routine business.  Alternatively they were offered
the place near the Chinchinim Post office just near the ancestral house of one
Valentino but even this did not appeal to them.  The last alternative given to
them was on either sides of the road which has recently been widened from the
St Sebastian Chapel upto the cemetery.  But the carpenters would have none of
it.

True there are a number of outsiders as well trading in the wood products
amongst them but they were cheesed off by the attitude of the Fabrica for
having permitted the garment vendors almost all two hundred stall owners
being outsiders, to be allowed to take their place.

As the stalemate continued today afternoon the Fabrica and the Committee of
Carpenters besides the Chinchinim Citizens forum were called for a
rapproachment before the SP  Mr S Prabhudesai and the Deputy Collector and SDO
SD Margao Mr Dipak Dessai (who has since received orders for his transfer to
Quepem taluka)  at Margao at 1435 hrs to broker a solution to the problem

However according to Fr Armando De Souza of Saligao the Parish Priest of Our
Lady of Hope (who has taken charge just over a year ago ) who spoke to this
writer late evening via telephone +91 0832 2863373 (as he was busy with the
church services and other arrangements for the Feast earlier) he said that --
the Fabrica had also agreed to shift the garment vendors away and leave the
front of the church only for traditional sweet meats, and other stalls like
grams etc on the eastern side of the Church near the Dr Loyola Furtado house
etc.  But with the adamant attitude of the Carpenters association who bluntly
insisted on nothing short of the same venue there was a stalemate.

Eventually according to Fr De Souza the All Goa Carpenter's association have
indeed decided to boycott the Feast fair.  But there was a rider to it .  Some
groups of persons moved to threaten other stall owners not to set shop.  The
outsiders were indeed terrorised and for fear that they may have to face dire
consequences elsewher  preferred to allow frayed tempers to settle and they
moved away from the venue.

This however infuriated the villagers of Chinchinim who felt that their
traditional festivites were being marred  by a few from Benaulim.   When this
writer spoke to one Fulao Cardoz he appeared a little surprised at the adamancy
of the Carpenters.

When asked why the preference was given to outsiders dealing in garments in
their (carpenters )  place he said it was these garment vendors that were most
visited by the people and therefore they were given the front of the Church.
Fr De Souza also expressed the same views later.

But then this clearly defeats the security threat perception as in the event
of any untoward incident there would be utter chaos and confusion confounded
because of the wall constructed around the play ground on 11th March, 2008.
Incidentally just as this writer was doing the rounds in the venue there were
reports of terrorist attacks in New Delhi at around 1824 hrs ( sms received
from NDTV ) and people in shops began to watch the TV causing further  tension
in the area.

Later this writer also  spoke to the

2008-09-13 Thread C Fernandes

Five suspected bomb blasts have been reported within minutes of each other in
markets in India's capital, Delhi.

Three people were killed in the blasts, according to local TV channels, while
at least 30 are said to have been hurt.

The explosions are not thought to have been very powerful but they happened in
areas crowded with evening shoppers.

The exact cause of the blasts is not known but bombs are suspected. Crude
explosives have been detonated in several Indian cities recently.

More than 400 people have died in separate attacks since October 2005, with the
cities of Ahmedabad and Jaipur among those hit.

India has blamed Islamist militant groups for these previous bombings.

Two of the latest blasts in Delhi are believed to have happened in the central
shopping district of Connaught Place.

Another blast took place in a market in the Greater Kailash area in south
Delhi.

A BBC producer who visited the scene said a low-intensity explosion had
scattered glass over a large area, near a popular cafe.

[Goanet] Orissa Voilence

2008-09-13 Thread Laluram Salvi
Dear Ancy D'Souza
When On 23rd August, 2008 Swami Laxmanand Saraswati a grand old man of 85 years
who was working against conversions amongst tribals in the undivided Phulbani
district of Orissawas  shot dead alongwith a minor and woman at an Ashram for
girls in the Kandhamal district of Orissa on the eve of Janamashtami
celebrations no one on Goanet condemned his killing.
The day after the murder not a single TV Channel or  National English daily
considered the news of this cold blooded murder important enough to be breaking
news or front page material. Not one reporter ascertained the obvious
maoist-missionary link up in Orissa which many suspect is prevalent in several
other parts of the country as well. Conversions may be debatable but allying
with enemies of the state is more than disturbing, for it is criminal and anti
national.
Right from Vivekananda and Aurobindo to Gandhiji and Ambedkar (excepting Nehru,
Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi!) all our national leaders have
condemned religious conversions unequivocally and it is the bounden duty of the
minorities to respect and adhere not only to their views but also to the letter
and spirit of the Constitution. They cannot take advantage of the tolerance’
shown by the majority community.
The  secular media reported Hindu fundamentalists attacking churches in Orissa.
What they suppressed for obvious reasons was the deadly attack on Laxmananda
Saraswati being orchestrated  by Christian fundamentalists believed to be
backed by Congress Rajya Sabha Member and World Vision chief Radha Kant Nayak.
In Orissa, these Christian missionaries, have been disturbing peace in the
region by first fraudulently converting tribals by economic enticement, then
forcing neo converts to eat beef, setting scores of temples on fire,
encouraging Kandh tribals to indulge in deforestation with the local mafia
using the false  propaganda that the trees are doomed by the lord.
The murder of  Laxmananda Saraswati had only evoked strong counter attacks by
the Hindus which at some places turned violent. Unfortunately, for some
baffling reasons the news media chose to report a complete distorted one sided
story of Christian persecution at the hands of so called Hindu fundamentalists
Our media have given a clean chit to missionaries by blaming the Maoists
without even informing the readers of the several previously unsuccessful
attempts on Laxmananda Saraswati’s life by Christian fanatics. The police have
arrested one Pradesh Kumar Das an employee of the World Vision, a Christian
Charity, from Khadagpur while escaping from the district at Buguda. In another
drive, two other persons Vikram Digal and William Digal have been arrested from
the house of Lal Digal, a local militant Christian, from Nuasahi at Gunjibadi,
Nuagaan. They have admitted to having joined a group of 28 other assailants.

This is a cheap shot at Keralites.

Usually they are ridiculed for three characteristics. One is their
accent, the other their penchant for drink and the third their
determination to help their own community.

If you ask me, Goans particularly, cannot cast the first stone at
either of the first two. Goan drunkards are not uncommon and a visit
to any Goan village will enlighten you on the accent that we think we
are famous for. As for their helping themselves, wish we Goans could
imitate that.

Lets look at one of our own weaknesses. Like the infamous reputation
of some Goan women who went to work as maids in Kuwait in the 60 sand
70s. Looks like Africa-to-Goa Augusto has not heard of that episode of
Goan history and I wonder what he would feel like if a Keralite
published a humor column on that subject in the Malayala Manorma.

My point is this. Augusto knows precious little of Keralites. Their
aristocratic families especially from Coorg beat the achievements and
wealth of Goan aristocratic families anytime. They are far more
industrious than Goans, taking any job that comes their way in the
spirit of dignity of labor. They help each other to an extent that
Goans will never be able to do. They occupy seats of bureaucratic and
political power in India that Goans cannot reach.

Religiously, they are on the vanguard of the Indian Catholic
population, both in the clergy as well as the teaching professions. If
you read the events in Orissa today, it is priests and nuns from
Kerala who are facing the brunt of the attacks.

They are more numerous than the traditionally martial Punjabis
especially in the Indian navy and the air force in all positions from
top to bottom. The first Indian army chiefs Cariappa and Thimmaya were
Keralites who had distinguished themselves with the British Army in
WWII. The first Goa military Governor after the Portuguese were
vanquished in 1961 was Kenneth Kandeth (aka Candoth) a Keralite.

I could write more. But I have made my point. Which is Goans have
their strengths and weaknesses and the Keralites have theirs. I love a
good laugh but not a bankrupt one, like that in this effeminately
addressed as usual cheers dears humor column.

Dear Friends
Many times what we actually see or hear is not what it actually is. Many times
our hasty decissions make us fools and we get into depressive moods for our own
faulty decissions. The murders in Orissa must be under investigation but many
times we here in Goa are writing our own stories and books and drawing our own
conclusions. Yes someone has burnt our churches it is very sad thing but who
killed Saraswati, we in Goa do not know. Why someone had to murder him is left
to the Police to find out as it is their work but till then let us pray to the
Almighty that truth may be out. Whether the murdered person is a hindu, or the
burnt person is a catholic is not required. What is required is that the
suffering humanity are creations of only one God. Saraswati who died and others
who died later due to riots were the creations of the same God and it is not
right to destroy life in any form. We should pray to theAlmighty for only He
can bring peace to the hearts of man. A peaceful heart is a loving heart.
Hatred is not in God's dictionary.

2008-09-13 Thread Gasper D'souza
Last night, the Indian media did it again.

At 8.30pm, during the coverage of the Delhi blasts, we were treated to some
Breaking news, with all channels claiming a child was found with a live
bomb. The boy was just 12, and to see the way the reporters were almost on
top of him, trying to get his visual was disgusting.

Then they got even lower. All of the channels managed to get hold of the boy
for exclusive interviews.

ToI is one source however, that did not publish the boy's name or his
photograph. The other's mostly succumbed. God help the 12 year old if the
terrorists, who are at large, get their hands on him, having now seen his
face on all channels.

And then, respected Indian frontline journalist, Bharka Dutt's live
exclusive with a hapless little chap found on the roadside would have been
hilarious if it were not for the grave story:

[Goanet] Goan music-6: HERALD(Goa), Sept 14, 2008

2008-09-13 Thread Valmiki Faleiro

GOAN MUSIC-6
By Valmiki Faleiro

I wouldn’t be grossly wrong saying this. The 20-odd, full-length Konknni
feature films on
celluloid are remembered more for their music. The first, ‘Mogacho Aunddo’
(1950),
produced by A. L. Jerry Braganza of Mapusa, had its music by the Bollywood
maestro,
Alfred Almeida of Cuncolim (assisted by Joe Perry – Chris Perry’s elder brother
– and
Peter D’Mello.) Its music largely accounted for the pioneering film’s success.

Musically talented Goans, on learning their notes from the village ‘Mestri,’
moved to
Bombay and beyond, for lack of opportunity in Portuguese Goa. (Besides the
point, but
interesting … Goa, during the World War years and attendant civil shortages,
had a
Governor who, when petitioned for a subsidy for the Old Goa feast choir, shot
back,
“There is no money for those who cry, where is the money for those who sing?”)

Goan musicians in Bombay and the rest of India had another advantage: they
blended
the melodic Indian classical notes with the harmonic ones of the West. Several
Goans
thus rose to be ‘arrangers’ – composer-conductors, actually – in India’s
emerging
cinema in Bombay.

Goa’s music contribution to India’s film industry far outstrips its population
ratio. For a
place so small, it gave so many. Names like Roque Gonsalves, Sebastian
Fernandes,
Sebastian D’Souza, Chic Chocolate and Anthony Gonsalves would need more than a
book to talk about. The Hindi film hit, “My name is Anthony Gonsalves” acted by
Amitabh
Bacchan, was actually a tribute to that Goan maestro from Majorda. Anthony had
taught
the violin to Bollywood giants, Pyarelal and RD Burman.

“Mogacho Aunddo” was filmed in colonial Goa. Then came Dec 19, 1961, and shortly
thereafter, the talk of Goa’s merger with Maharashtra. Another distinguished
Bollywood
composer-conductor, Frank Fernand, a Goan from Curchorem, moved in, and, in two
rapid-fire works of love, himself produced ‘Amchem Noxib’ (1963) and ‘Nirmon’
(1966.)
Both films are also remembered more for Frank’s music.

Frank imparted an orchestral element to the songs and music in his films. Who
can
forget songs like Sontos Bogta, Bhenkdaita Pai, Yo Moga, Mollbailo Dov, Mogachem
Tarum, Claudia, Upkar Korat, Dol Mojea Bai… ? Somehow, Frank’s third film,
‘Mhoji
Ghorkarn’ didn’t register as well.

Jerry Braganza returned with ‘Sukachem Sopon’ (1966.) Its music was set by
another
Bollywood great – Manuel Afonso, of Seraulim. Songs like Patovantly Kunvour,
Jurament Neketrancher and Motiancho Surngar (sung solo by Jerry or in duet with
Cecilia Machado) are still remembered by those who heard them. Manuel also
scored
the unforgettable melodies in the film “Cortubancho Sounsar.” Looks like the
Goan
maestros used all their experience in the Hindi film-music industry to give
their best for
their mother tongue…

Chris Perry then bounced from Bollywood to the Konknni stage, with an ace added
to his
trumpet and saxophone: Lorna. Like his illustrious predecessors, he will be
remembered
for original compositions (when lesser mortals were busy aping western tunes.)
Chris
produced ‘Bhuiarantlo Munis’ (1977), which, together with ‘Mog ani Moipas’ of
the same
year, were the first Konknni films in colour. Coming as he did from the film
industry, it
was inevitable that the orchestral touch would be writ large over his Konknni
music. (His
impassioned plea that Goan youngsters learn music is poignantly echoed in the
only
recorded song I know that he sang himself: “Do Re Mi.”)

It was men like Alfred Almeida, Frank Fernand, Manuel Afonso and Chris Perry who
bequeathed to us those evergreen Konknni film songs. Incidentally, Neeta Jain’s
1997
‘Oh Bai,’ acclaimed internationally, had its music provided by Xavier Peres.
Likewise,
music for ‘Girestcai’ was scored by another contemporary, Emiliano da Cruz.

Konknni film songs were scripted by stage artistes like Alfred Rose, C.
Alvares, Souza
Ferrao, Robin Vaz, M. Boyer and Remy Colaco. To Alfred Rose goes the singular
credit
of scripting all the songs in ‘Boglant’ and ‘Buierantlo Munis.’ The “Melody
King” is said to
have recorded the eight songs of ‘Boglant’ within the insides of one day! The
lyricists at
times lent their own voice to the songs, but most were sung by artistes many
would
forget today: like Lena Fernandes, Cecilia Machado, Molly, Antonette, Shalini
Mardolkar,
Kiti Carrasco, Sheela, Agnes, Rita Rose, Delphine. And male voices like those
of Jerry
Braganza, Anthony Mendes, Jacinto Vaz, Robin Vaz, Rico Rod, H. Britton and Vin
Paul.

Mangalore too produced a fair share of Konknni film music. The joint
Goa-Mangalore
film, ‘Mog ani Moipas’ was scripted by Dr. Manoharrai Sardessai. Its music was
set by
Wilfy Remimbus, who also did ‘Bogsanhe’ of the mid-1990s.

The size of the Konknni film world is – like Goa – minuscule, but the quality
of her music
is, I think, second to none! (To conclude.) (Ends.)

VIVENCIAS PARTILHADAS or LIVES SHARED
By Dr. Helga do Rosario Gomes*

“Goan Identity” and the Goan way of life, both much debated and variedly
interpreted are
the central and common denominators in Goans’ opposition to mega housing
projects,
SEZs and rampant open cast mining in Goa’s villages. The current turmoil
manifests a
realization that the identity of Goans and their way of life is under grave
threat – and that
it needs to be protected and preserved.

If there is an argument to be made in favor of preserving this Goan way of
life, especially
at a time when it faces relentless assault, it lies in ‘Vivências Partilhadas’
(Lives Shared),
a compilation of finely crafted short stories by the late Profa. Maria Elsa da
Rocha. The
book is published by Oscar Jose Noronha for Third Millennium, Goa (2005, 148
pp., Rs.
250, ISBN 81-903648-6-3).

Profa. Rocha’s were stories that were dear to the listeners of All India
Radio’s
Portuguese language program, ‘Renascença.’ Those days, families gobbled their
dinner
before she came on the air, so that the clank of crockery and cutlery would not
mar
Profa. Rocha’s powerful narration.

For, when she uttered a passionate ‘Avoi ghe’ or ‘Deva’, listeners were
transported to the
woods as Anusaya and her mother braved wild beasts to flee a life of bonded
labor in
“Anusaya, a Salva de Floresta” (Anusaya, Delivered from the Forest). Or felt the
calloused hands of Pulquéria as she caressed the pox ridden and burning face of
her son
Santana, lying ill and spent, in a cudd in Bombay in “Nem Só de Pão” (Not by
Bread
Alone.)

Offering a wave of ‘saudades’ to Goans, and a delight to Portuguese readers
worldwide,
‘Vivências Partilhadas’ was destined to spring from the sharp, observant mind
of a young
Profa. Rocha whose dusks were spent lounging in spacious balçoes, her ears
tingling with
tall tales narrated by ingenious uncles. What could curb the imagination of a
girl reared in
a Goa, when tolling church bells told you the time and a friend’s visit could
stretch for a
month?

In “Dom Teotonio,” based on a narrative by her maternal uncle, she describes a
world of
opulence, of luxurious palanquins, brilliant chandeliers and panu-baju of
Zardosi at the
wedding of Dom Teotonio, all of which allows him to hide his meanness and
bigotry.
However, his true nature surfaces from the skin-deep sheen when the artisan
Raiu fails to
deliver the tiara that his bride will wear at their wedding.

As a young woman, Profa. Rocha joined the legions of teachers of the Escola
Primária,
serving in distant and seemingly quiet villages of Birondem, Macasana and even
Diu.
During those long and often lonely evenings in the villages of her posting, she
wove her
enchanting short stories.

Now shared with us again, in print form, in ‘Vivências Partilhadas’ is the dark
and
sensual story of “Manilheiro” (The Bangle Vendor), where she spins us in a
kaleidoscopic vortex of brilliant and colorful bangles slipped onto the hands
of a young
bride by the manilheiro. The bangle vendor’s attraction for the bride’s
widowed mother
makes him almost delirious and the reader dizzy in the undercurrents of their
passion.
Who could thwart such an inappropriate alliance but the powerful local witch
Pintin?

Profa. Rocha’s beautiful prose transports us to varied settings such as the
charming
villages of Bardez, streaked with slow moving and elegant rivers, which form the
backdrop of romance between a young boatman Suriá and his regular passenger
Vatsol
during the tumultuous pre-1961 period.

In “Na Estrada de Junagar” (The Road to Junagar) she takes us along the dark
and bandit
ridden roads to Diu, Goa’s erstwhile overland pocket on the Gujarat coast in
story of two
young lawyers (one of who was her father) and their families’ pursuit of a plump
assignment and a bit of adventure.

With ‘Vivências Partilhadas’ Profa. Rocha shares with you a smorgasbord of
lives well
lived in a time of hidden pots of gold and saints that could make or break you.

To the young Goan, who may be oblivious of the life and times of that bygone
era, and to
nostalgic seniors, Profa. Rocha’s ‘Vivências Partilhadas’ is a captivating
journey through
a Goa that no five star resort brochure can offer. For wider exposure and for
the sake of
Goa, let us hope that some Goaphile will soon offer us a version in English.

exposed?to the large scale destruction of Goa?and other facts pertaining to

the rumor has it that?even the Goan Politicos are hooked on it.

Floriano, you have been around for too long and seen many?Activists and Saviors
of Goa?appear and disappear like a?comet. As you said, Goans do not need saviors
from outside.Goa needs a Goan Solution and they are more than capable of
running their own affairs. One of the reasons Goa is in such a mess is that,?Goa
after so called Liberation was run by all these Bhailes who had no interest of
Goa or Goans at heart.Their Mission was to Loot and Destroy.?

It takes time, effort, motivation, conviction and love for Goa to write such a
detailed Road Map for Goa. It also takes courage to contest against so called
Heavyweight, knowing fully well that you will not win .Courageous people fight
for the cause. They are not worried about failure as they are dedicated to the
cause .Cowards will stay behind and watch and even pull you down as they are
afraid of failure. You can see many of them now with different titles in
various NGOs and Organizations. These are the?guys Goans should be worried
about as they are destructive and dedicated to their own cause.

For Good Governance, we need honest and dedicated Leaders to be in the
Government.Thats where the real power to effect real changes lie.All this
buisness of being Apolitical is an idealistic theory which does not work even
in the worlds best Democracies. It is all about Politics, specially in India.

In the end, good will always overcome evil. You have lit the light in the dark
tunnel. Hopefully more will follow. May your tribe grow bigger for the sake of
Goa. ??

It's long overdue for the Goan, specially the Goan Catholic, to consider
 self-employing professions and entrepreneurship. FN

My dear Goanetters,

People are willing pay huge bribes (as per some of your e-mails on Goanet),to
get into govtmt. orgs like AI etc., because govtmt jobs in India, are always
secure jobs.

Jobs in the private sector do pay more, but the hire and fire policy exists
and hence, most Indians prefer secure and safe government jobs.

[Goanet] Cheers Dears: Sir Gungul'lo

2008-09-13 Thread U P Kamath
General Thimmyya and Cariappa were not Keralites. They were from Coorg -
Kodagu - a district of Karnataka. The district is nestled in western ghats.
They are known as Coorgi's and speak a different language.
They were always a martial race and form just about majority of Kodagu
district (perticular Coorgi caste).
Southern part of Canara districts were always plagued by their raids - they
used to regularly raid and loot these parts before the British - and some
times after.
They were an independent principality at the time of Indian independence and
were Type C state and later merged with Karnataka (then Mysore).

[Goanet] COMPLAINT AGAINST BABUSH BEFORE RETURNING OFFICER

2008-09-13 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Utt Goenkara has filed a complaint before the Deputy Collector Returning
officer Mr. Sabaji Shetye against Goa's Education Minister and Taleigao MLA
Mr. Babush Monseratte for having filed a false Affidavit about his
educational qualification.

At the Goa Legislative Assembly elections held in May 2007 Mr. Monseratte
had filed his nomination papers from 11- Taleigao Assembly Constituency and
along with the nomination papers Mr. Monseratte had filed an Affidavit as
required by law which needs to disclose amongst other things the candidate's
educational qualifications.

Though it was required that every candidate should state the name of
school/university and the year in which the course was completed, Mr.
Monseratte merely stated that his educational qualification was S.S.C. from
St. Theresa's High School, Bandra, Bombay, without disclosing the year of
passing.

A letter received from the Headmaster of that school has now revealed that
Mr. Monseratte was admitted to St. Theresa's High School, Bandra on 19th
June 1975 in 6th Std. and had left the school half way on 7th September 1978
while in Std 8th.

A perusal of the Affidavit filed by Mr. Monseratte and the letter from the
Headmaster clearly establishes that the information given on oath by Mr.
Monseratte in his Affidavit was false.

Section 125A of the Representation of People's Act 1951 deals with the penal
provisions for furnishing false information in an Affidavit and that
that Section
177 and Section 199 of the Indian Penal Code contain the penal provision for
furnishing false information and for making a false declaration to a public
servant.

As per the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India on
02-06-2004 when any complaint regarding furnishing of false information by
any candidate is submitted by anyone, supported by documentary evidence, the
Returning Officer should initiate action to prosecute the candidate
concerned.

The Returning officer has been called upon to after perusing the complaint
and holding an inquiry, if need be, to take immediate action as per the law
against Mr. Babush Monseratte.

[Goanet] Policy wonk team to Goa's rescue

2008-09-13 Thread Philip Thomas
In fact this team of 15 members assembled by the Goa government has the
grandiose mission to make Goa a First world state ( Experts to help chart
Goa's future, TOI Sept 12). It seems to have a roughly even mix of insiders
(8) and outsiders (7) but a predominance of public policy and finance
academics and practitioners (votaries of PPP). There are some management
academics and practitioners too besides a few from GOG. The members: Naseer
Munjee (Chairman), Prof Om Mathur, Prof Sebastian Morris, Bhavna Bhatia, CII
rep, Vishwajeet Kanwarpal, Cherian Thomas, JP Singh (Ch Secy), Sec'y
Planning (Goa), S.Shanbhogue ( PPP Cell), GCCI Pres, Charles Correa, Edgar
Ribeiro, Fr.Romuald, PFX D'Lima. Go Goa Goan!
