[Goanet] G'bye Goa - Goan Emigration-4: HERALD(Goa), Aug 9, 2009
- Goanetter Francis Rodrigues (Vasco/Toronto) unveils his book, The Greatest Konkani Song Hits. Launch dates: Goa (Kala Academy) on 9 Aug. 4 pm. U.K. (Staines) on 15 Aug. Canada on 20 Aug and US on 30 Aug. Details http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ - G'BYE GOA: GOAN EMIGRATION-4 By Valmiki Faleiro Most Goan émigrés in Portuguese and British Africa never returned. They either stayed on, or moved to Portugal, UK and the rest of the developed world. With families raised and settled in that milieu, why would émigré-parents return to Goa? They're part of Goa's permanent emigrants. Then there's another major chunk of Goan expats: Gulf Goans. Like seamen, they emigrated for work, but are rooted to Goa. Not by choice perhaps, because Arabs do not grant citizenship to foreigners. Some Gulf Goans, sure, resettled in the west. The story of Gulf Goans, again, traces back to the British and their 1799-1813 occupation of Goa, which ushered the modern wave of emigration by Goans. The Persian/Arabian Gulf began to open up when the British placed a garrison in Aden in the early 1800s. After Napoleon conquered Egypt, Aden became strategic to protect British interests in India. When steamships were invented and a coalbunker station was needed on the Britain-India sea-route in the Red Sea area, the British promptly captured Aden in 1839 and made it the "Coal-hole of the East." (They punctured many other holes in the region, and I'm not only on oil wells. Remember the 1922 Palestine Mandate and creation of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.) Oil interests of the West blossomed into new job opportunities for Goa. The "Gulf Fever" infected Goa in the 1960s. It never really subsided. By the 1970s, Kuwait and UAE alone absorbed 50,000 Goans. In 1987, Gulf Goans counted 1,50,000 plus. When the Gulf Fever was in full bloom late last century, most Goan villages in the Old Conquest talukas, particularly Salcete, would have their working population depleted by anywhere between 15 to 50 percent. The Gulf is the single biggest destination of Goan emigrants (56%, leading far ahead of Europe with 13%, South- SE Asia 11%, North America 10% and seamen 7%.) No official statistics on modern Goan out-migration/emigration was ever compiled. Perhaps for the obvious reason: migration out of the land was a shameful reflection of the competence of Goa's successive governments since 1963 to create adequate and rewarding local job opportunities. Credit for conducting the first ever post-1961 survey on Goan emigration goes to the NRI Commissioner, Eduardo Faleiro, once my college lecturer in law, a distinguished parliamentarian and a man of foresight. At his instance, Thiruvananthapuram-based Centre for Development Studies (CDS) undertook the job. (CDS is a Government of India body, established by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs.) CDS conducted a representative survey of 6,000 households across Goa, selected under the Stratified Multistage Random Sampling method. The report threw up some interesting, if not unexpected, results. Let's look at a few highlights today. And a bit more in detail next Sunday. Here are some of the findings of the study. Salcete accounts for one-half of Goan emigration. Together with Bardez and Tiswadi, the Old Conquest talukas add up to 81% of Goan emigration. Three-fourth (75%) of it is Catholic. In contrast, Goan Hindus (66% of the population) account for only 20% emigration. ("Emigration rate is 42 per 100 households among Catholics, but only 5% among Hindus.") However, when we count out-migrants (émigrés out of Goa but within India), Goan Hindus account for 71% as against a mere 24% Catholics. Seventeen percent households have two family members abroad, 20% have more than two members. This figure goes up to as many as five family members abroad from a single household! Goans are spread over 43 countries of the world, as per the study's statistical sample (though the report adds, "they are found the world over and it would be difficult to name a country without a Goan community . the general understanding among scholars in Goa.") The survey, however, covered only Goan émigrés in the Gulf region, Europe, South and South East Asia, North America and aboard ships, not the ones settled in regions like South America, Australia and New Zealand. Remember these figures pertain only to émigrés who still have family back home. Since ancient times and yet to this day, entire Goan families moved away, leaving no one behind to report their emigration. [Goanet] The Indian Death Wish
Details http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ - The Indian Death Wish Meet your Maker in style, in Goa By Cecil Pinto In Kiran Nagerkar's deceptively hilarious book "Ravan and Eddie" there is a scene where Ravan while watching a Catholic funeral says, "Even though we are born Hindu we should all strive to be buried as Catholics" - or something to that effect. What he is referring to is not any redeeming quality in the Catholic religion but the sheer elegance and grandeur of the ceremonies surrounding death and burial. The grand Goan Catholic funeral is probably something many others like Ravan also aspire to. I mean look at how over the centuries the Goan Catholic death related ceremonies have evolved into a grand spectacle that possibly even rivals the Goan Catholic wedding in terms of a cultural icon. Starting with the wording and border thickness of the Death Announcement in the newspapers, to the last handshake and hug outside the cemetery there is a sense of dignity and planning that people of other religions must be envying. I phoned my friend, entrepreneur Michael D'Costa, who's keen mind is always exploring every possible Goan business opportunity. Sure enough, he had already tapped into the possibility and was setting up a site named www.Bury-Me-In-Goa.com. "So Michael is this like the sunset-wedding-on-a-Goan beach business that is attracting so many foreigners?" "No. Most of the foreigners visiting Goa come from a relatively Western Christian background and so are quite used to such funerals. In fact there is another business opportunity there but I'm not going down that road." "Meaning?" "See Cecil we always aspire to be the other. You get light skinned foreigners coming here to get a dark tan and we Indians try to become white by using Fair and Lovely cream. Similarly they come here to get married according to the Hindu rites and Indian tradition. We want to be more western than them and that's why you have Hindus from all over India coming to Goa to have a Western Style wedding ceremony. Of course they are all sham ceremonies with non-denominational ministers and no legal or religious sanction, but that doesn't stop them. They want to be Western and say "I do" rather than just do the Saath Pheri. We always aspire to be the other." "What's this got to do with the business you're avoiding?" "Lots of foreigners want to get cremated in India in the traditional way, with wood and fire and stuff. They want their ashes to be dramatically immersed in the Ganga - and all that. There's big money for someone who can do that business." "So why don't you?" "Arre yaar Cecil. I do what I am familiar with, Christian stuff. Besides the logistics of storing and then flying down a body from Europe to India is quite mind boggling." "What exactly are you offering then?" "I'm offering Indians living in India, of any religion, to have a Goan Catholic Death Wish" "Death wish? You mean burial?" "No I mean Death Wish. Anything connected with their death will be done in typical Goan Catholic style. For starters an advertisement will be inserted in the local papers, with the names of all close relatives. Then we will have the body in a coffin. I have constructed a typical Goan Catholic 'home' for the purpose. There will be candle stands and a large wall hanging with a nice holy picture and a quote from the Bible. Professional mourners will sing paeans to the deceased. Wreaths and flower arrangements galore and a Rosary or similar prayer every hour or so, recited by suitably devout hired locals." "Sounds possible so far." "Then the coffin will be carried to the church by pall bearers or by a hearse depending on the Death Wish package they have chosen." "You said church? Will the Catholic church allow a non-Catholic body in?" "Tell me Cecil, does a non-living object have a religion?" "I guess not." "So a corpse effectively has no religion. No? Just pulling your leg yaar. I'm working out deals with some friendly parish priests to allow for a proper mass ceremony. The way I see it the Church has no problem with non-Catholics attending mass. They only object to non-Catholics receiving Holy Communion. Now a dead person is not going to receive Communion, so I don't see why a mass cannot be held. I am also doing some serious lobbying at the Bishop's Palace." "Good luck with that!" "The number of priests concelebrating the mass will depend on the package they choose of course. So will the choir. Surprisingly my Indian clients want hymns sung in Latin and Portuguese while locals usually opt for Konkani or Eng

[Goanet] Conservatives oppose call for Church assets reforms (Devika Sequeira, DH)
Details http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ - Conservatives oppose call for Church assets reforms Devika Sequeira, DH News Service, Panaji: devikaseque...@gmail.com Deccan Herald August 6, 2009 Conservatives in India’s Christian Churches are rallying together to oppose a call for reforms in laws that govern their assets. The All India Catholic Union (AICU) said the demand that state laws be extended to Church properties was unacceptable because it would amount to government and political interference in the internal affairs of the Christian community. A seminar in Goa last week addressed by prominent liberal-minded Christians had said it was time India’s Churches accepted a more secular approach and brought their properties under the ambit of state laws. All religions must be kept on the same footing in such matters, former Union minister Eduardo Faleiro told the seminar. Faleiro’s views were endorsed by AICU president Remy Denis and former Supreme Court judge K T Thomas who pointed out that while almost all other religions had laws enacted to govern their holdings, Christian Churches continued with internal regulations. These are not sufficient to say they are governed by the law envisaged under Article 26 of the Constitution, Thomas had said. AICU spokesperson John Dayal, who enjoys the support of a conservative faction within the hierarchy of Christian Churches, says the views of a handful of Christians in the Goa seminar have opened a Pandora’s box and triggered a wave of indignation among Christians of all denominations across India. Dayal rejected outright any move to enact laws to govern assets of the Churches. He said there was no question of government control on the Church and community properties. He insisted that the “Christian situation” differs radically and materially from that of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh religions. Church properties, whether places of worship, educational institutions or community land, were more than adequately covered under the law of the land to ensure transparency in property and financial dealings.
[Goanet] AISI: Tiatr Mahanand Monis vo Soitan?
- Goanetter Francis Rodrigues (Vasco/Toronto) unveils his book, The Greatest Konkani Song Hits. Launch dates: Goa (Kala Academy) on 9 Aug. 4 pm. U.K. (Staines) on 15 Aug. Canada on 20 Aug and US on 30 Aug. Details http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ - Mahanand Monis vo Soitan? Imagine tiatr going houseful in Hindu dominated Ponda! First ever house full Tiatr show in Ponda? Most say yes. But I found one who says this is the second after Prince Jacob. All tickets sold a day ahead. Next show 30th Aug. Majority of the crowd was Hindus. It’s like saying, every 5 people we saw there, 4 were Hindus 850 seating auditorium was packed to the capacity and seen over 100 extra standing in the corridors including women. I am sure of the 600 odd Hindus, half of them must have come to watch Tiatr for the first time. Offcourse, it’s not the Tiatr there come to see but the Mahanand. OK, what’s new in Tony Dias’ tiatr this time? Well, set up of huge bridge on stage where Mahanand comes riding in his Rickshaw along with his girlfriend where he kills her and throw her body down the water. Double sitter Cycle passing also shown on the bridge. Next, was a typical Minister’s Cabin.. Again, a huge set up.. Then a giant python shown chasing and devouring a hen. Mahanand murdering one of his 16 victims was shown simultaneously. Beside police station/lock up where hanging upside down, electric shocks, laying on ice block etc shown Janet, as usual entertained the crowd. Every one accepted her comedy with applause. Her encounter with Mahanand’s wife (Sharon) was well received by the crowd. Who played Mahanand? I and many others thought he (new face) was from non-catholic but the guy is from Vasco one Mr. Franky Gonsalves. Played very well. Someone offered cash prize for his role Rs.500. Next. The role of Home Minister (Ravi Naik). Don’t know who? He dressed like him (blue shirt), acted like him and talked like him. He got a big public applause from the audience for his acting/role. Ravi Naik is the local MLA (Ponda). Bhuska as one of the victims brought tears in many people eyes while pleading Mahanand not to kill her.. She regretted leaving her home/parents etc (the one who ran away with builder Mahanand leaving behind a note… ) It has unusual ending, so people stick to their chairs till the end. At the end, a question was put to all ‘Mahanand Monis vo Soitan? And the audience loudly responded ‘Soitan’ Other actors were Filip Almeida, Cony M, Com. Ambe, Jaju, Jane, Shruti, Sharon, Wilson, Filu, Jessica, Trio with Joaquim, Petr-Roshan, Aurelio etc etc Sorry, photos may not come out that good as we were seated in the 21st row. Also, people were constantly going around to see if anybody recording the show and I was reminded twice. Tiatr got over at 7.15pm - The front curtain/Road scene seems too narrow that both sides there was a wide gap and actors seen moving around. - There was a problem with Mic and inside curtains too. - Wilson announced backstage that the next song is a tribute to a well know personality who died recently - Can you guess who he is?? And the audience replied ‘ M Boyer’ but the person infact was Michael Jackson. Sharon sang a song in tune with ‘Black or White’ - When Mahanand was shown for the first time on stage, many cameramen came forward to take picture of him and this could includes reporters. Seen many with video cameras in front but announcement was made no video recording allowed without the permission of the director. joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa & NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc

Catholics comprise only a quarter of the state's population, but the emigration rate within the community is 42 per cent for 100 households compared to just five per cent among Hindus. Every third Christian home in Goa has an emigrant. Goa became the earliest territory in the non-western world to be exposed to western culture. Dismissing local protests, the Portuguese imposed a 'military tax' on those leaving the state, and a property tax on those who lived outside, but retained properties in Goa . The property tax compelled entire Goan families to emigrate permanently selling off ancestral properties here. As a consequence, Goan settlements came up in Santa Cruz in Mumbai, in Kolkata, Karachi and Aden. According to the 2001 Census, Goa's Christians have declined from 38.07 per cent in 1961 to 26.68 per cent in 2001. Based on the last census, migrants make a fifth of Goa's population. That proportion would be closer to one-third today. Full text, 612 words at http://www.deccanherald.com/content/18569/goan-christians-historic-emigratio n-continues.html Forwarded by Eddie Fernandes

Details http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ - 08/08/2009 To The Editor, Sir, Kindly publish the following press note in your esteemed daily. Thanking you, * (Jose Salvador Fernandes) * Secretary (Mob: 9881810832) * Press Release * In the untimely death of Dr. (Prof) Olivinho Gomes, Goa has lost a prolific research-oriented writer. This was the refrain at the meeting jointly organised by Goa Konkni Akademi (GKA) and Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) at GCCI Hall, Panaji on Friday, August 07, 2009 to condole the death of Dr. Gomes, ‘a great Konknni stalwart who was equally at ease in Romi as well as Devnagori script.’ N. Shivdas, president of GKA said that Dr. Gomes was a widely-travelled writer and stated that Goa will always ‘feel his absence’ in the field of reaserch-oriented writing. Shivdas also made a mention of Dr. Gomes’ celebrated story, *Mon Oddtta, Mon Oddonam*, set in St. Estevam, his native village. Premanand Lotlikar, President of DKA said that in the passing away of Dr. Gomes, DKA has lost a fatherly figure and spoke about the DKA-commissioned book, *The History of* *Konknni Literature in Romi Script*. Authored by Dr. Gomes, Lotlikar disclosed that the eminent writer did not live to see the book, to be released soon, in print. Adv Radharao Gracias spoke of his association with Dr. Gomes during the days of the Konknni Movement and made a reference to *Village Goa*, Dr. Gomes’ ‘intensely written book on village life.’ Although *Village Goa* is a study of Chandor, the well-researched book is a mirror of any village in Goa, he said. Dr. Gomes’ love for Konknni was immense, Gracias declared, and also reminded about his decision to let go a lucrative IAS posting in the Customs. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Akademi of Goa said that although Dr. Gomes received the Sahitya Akademi Award for translation, the ‘crab mentality’ in the Konknni world was responsible in denying him the award for ‘creative writing’. He proposed that both GKA and DKA institute a scholarship in memory of Dr. Gomes for Konknni research as also a book on his life, which he truly deserved. Dr. Bicaji Ganecar, Cyriaco Dias and Estev Varella from St. Estevam also spoke on the occasion. A message received from Fr. Pratap Naik, Director of TSKK, Porvorim was also read. Prominent among those who attended the condolence meet were Pandharinath Lotlikar, former director, Doordarshan Kendr, Alexyz, cartoonist and the family members of Dr. Gomes. Floral tributes and a minute’s silence were observed at the beginning of the meet. Jose Salvador Fernandes, Secretary, DKA compered and proposed the vote of thanks. PHOTO CAPTION: GKA President N. Considered the most beneficial of all whole grains, Prof. Vuksan of Toronto calls the nutrient composition phenomenal. It is rich in omega-3 oils, antioxidants, calcium, zinc and iron. A regular addition to diet produces dramatic drops in BP levels, triglyceride levels and the C-Reactive protein marker that predicts heart disease. The glucose lowering effect after a meal was as high as 40 %. The very viscous soluble fibre gels with food in the small intestine, slowing absorption and insulin spikes. The grain can be consumed whole. I picture the Deccan, around Belgaum, cooler and drier, to be an ideal growing region for the crop, if introduced to India.
[Goanet] Konkani tunes sampled from Western
- Goanetter Francis Rodrigues (Vasco/Toronto) unveils his book, The Greatest Konkani Song Hits. Launch dates: Goa (Kala Academy) on 9 Aug. 4 pm. U.K. (Staines) on 15 Aug. Canada on 20 Aug and US on 30 Aug. Details http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ - On another forum my researcher friend Jose Lourenco brought up the topic of Konkani song composers 'sampling' from Western tunes - sometimes blatantly and totally, sometimes subtly and partially. I am quoting selectively (with his permission) from Jose's statements and am hoping to take this discussion further. The ethics of sampling or plaigarism does not interest me in this case but rather a listing if possible of all identifieable lifts from Western tunes. quote The late Alfred Rose was well known for borrowing melodies from western songs. But he was not alone in this. I stumbled across the inspiration for one of Chris Perry's most famous Konkani songs while browsing YouTube. The Four Freshmen was a band founded in 1948. Now listen to their song 'Poinciana' , at the beginning and from 1.52 onwards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4NafK3NFhA&feature=related Now you know where the opening of 'Sorgar Rajeant' comes from! Chris Perry was cleverer than Alfred Rose in that he never copied a whole melody. A bit here from a song from the fifties, a bit there from a classical concertoHe was undoubtedly a genius, but this also shows how much western melody influenced and impregnated the Konkani music of yesteryear. Chris Perry was a jazz lover, which explains why he would be listening to the Freshmen in the first place. Technically, Perry copied or consciously appropriated (to be more PC) the opening of his song. The rest of his song Sorgar Rajeant and the Freshmen song Poinciana have nothing in common. Perry's song became a hit. This was largely due to Perry's sensitivity and genius in forming a whole new body of Konkani music. The roots of course lie in the fact that Goan musicians were already at the forefront of swing music in Bombay, Calcutta and other places. I am not belittling Perry or Rose in any way. But as connoisseurs of music, we must delve into the origins of our music, as Pandit Bhaskar Chandawarkar (who passed away a few weeks ago) often told me during the Konkani Music Festival. We must not be ashamed to study and record the influences and inputs into our music. Listen to Lulu's song Boom Bang a Bang from 1969 and guess the Konkani song based on it (not a Chris Perry song): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUWkH4ee8TQ unquote Can anybody give more examples? Cheers! Cecil

After clinging on to his chair, he should know better than anybody else that he is presiding over a most discordant cabinet with most Ministers not seeing eye to eye. He knows how rowdy his cabinet meetings are with virtual bull fights amongst his Ministers. Digambar Kamat knows very well that he does not command the respect or have any authority over his Ministers. He has allowed them to plunder Goa as long as they allow him to keep his chair. Digambar Kamat would have been remembered as an exemplary leader if he had hung up his boots rather than allow Goa’s further decay. Leave alone travelling by Economy class, Digambar Kamat and his Ministers should curtail all traveling especially the overseas jaunts. Most of the time they are out of Goa. All would agree that Digambar Kamat will go down in Goa’s history as the most ineffective and spineless Chief Minister. That his assets have swelled after he became the Chief Minister of Goa is a different issue. Loot and let’s loot is the theme of the current motley dispensation that is not ruling but ruining Goa. In spite of being a graduate with good marks I was never able to find a job in Goa in a government department, maybe because I could not raise money to pay a bribe. But I was able to get a good job on a cruise liner. This the case for many Goans. Today Goa is place for criminals and robbers to hide and the population of non-Goans has gone up to a dangerous level. We do need people from other states to a certain extent, but these people always carry dirty baggage with them wherever they go. Today Margao town is overtaken by migrants and any visit to Margao reminds oneself of the gallis of Mumbai. It has become very dirty and smelly, and I have seen people answering nature’s call by the side of the road. There are still some people who say that if Goans can go anywhere, a non-Goans should also be welcome in Goa. But people from other states never adjust themselves to the local Goans culture. They never change their bad habits and learn to improve themselves. But a Goan can adjust to any foreign culture, which is why a Goan is welcome everywhere. Post from Marlon Sorry, Arwin has very limited credibility in this regard, because he has himself "abandoned" Goa for greener pastures abroad. The large outflux of Goans is one reason why openings have been created for non-Goans to enter Goa. Rajan, who is a US citizen who maintains a US residence is another part time patriot. Based on your email, it looks like you too are holiday Goan. If and when I hear the real full time locals in Goa start complaining (e.g. FN, Cecil Pinto, my parents and family) about the so called ghatti (aka Indian Nigger) influx, I will reverse my opinions. If you guys don't like the way Goa is turning out to be, you have two choices: move to Goa permanently and bring change, or just leave Goa for good. [Goanet] Save the date -- August 13th and August 14th-- community media conference in Candolim
Details http://www.konkanisongbook.com/ - Dear Goa Friends Video Volunteers will be hosting 130 people from around India for a Community Video Training Camp, at the Alor Grande Hotel from the 10th-15th of August. This will be the largest ever event about community video in India, and we hope you will join us for the *13th or 14th of August in Candolim, at the Alor Grande Resort.* What is community video, you may ask? Community video is media that is “made in, for and by communities,” and since 2006, Video Volunteers has trained over 100 community people — former diamond polishers, day laborers and rickshaw drivers among them — to make their own videos as a full-time, salaried job. These videos are screened in the center of the villages on movie screens on a monthly basis in more than 300 villages of India, and more than 200,000 have seen these films. Community video gives local people a voice to get out their own news and information, and transforms local people into community leaders. Most importantly, it empowers communities to take action, and more than 2000 have taken a stand on issues like water, education, human rights and gender equality after seeing one of these films. Video Volunteers was started several years ago, but we are new to Goa, having opened our office here in Baga only several months. So this event is also a launch party for Video Volunteers in Goa, and we would like to invite you to learn about our work, how you can get involved, and also give us your advice on how community media can strengthen the inspiring activism happening in Goa. There are two events you can attend: *Thursday, August 13th, 9:00am-5:30pm:* in the afternoon, there is a panel discussion on community media, and how it can strengthen social movements in Goa. Speakers will include Derek Almeida, Alito Sequeira, Gasper D’Souza, Norma Alvares (to be confirmed), Venita Coelho (to be confirmed) and Sebastien Rodrigues. The session will be started with a presentation by community producers about their work around India reporting on local issues and helping their neighbors access critical information. In addition to the panels, from 9am until 7pm there will be events running all day you can drop in, such as presentations on street theater, open source software, digiactivism, video blogging, community fiction films and presentations by community producers on what they have learned in their five days of training. Attending these training workshops as a spectator will be a great way to see firsthand how training in journalism is giving community members, many of whom have had very little education, into articulate and creative media-makers. *Friday, August 14th, 9:00am-5pm:* a one day conference on community media across India, with leaders speaking from the fields of internet activism, community radio and video. The conference will start with presentations by community producers about the impact of their work, and will touch upon issues such as how community video can integrate with the mainstream, where the movement is headed, and how we can grow from a few hundred people in India engaged in community media, to tens of thousands. The doors are open for all Goans to attend — whether students, teachers, activists, business people or simply active and curious individuals. You don’t need to be a filmmaker or media person to come! There is no charge for attending, and we would be honored to meet you and share our work with you. *Directions *— Please come to the *Alor Grande Hotel in Candolim* located opposite Health Center, near Dona Alcina Hotel.
