As a citizen of India I really do feel saddened sometimes because every single
day is a gasp for a democratic breath of air. Hardly has a week passed by when
the Speaker of the Assembly laid a stake in the heart of democracy by
threatening imprisonment, hearkening us back to a time when colonial Portuguese
officers had a field day with ice-cubes at the Fort Aguada, when the HJS reared
its ugly head to threaten us with a dagger at the heart of freedom of
expression.

I really do feel sad having lived now for quite a few years in Western
democracies, to see how very hard, we Indians have to fight to preserve ours. I
wonder if Nehru, when he delivered his speech at the stroke of midnight thought
our tryst with destiny would be so torturous. Did he believe in all optimism
that we would sail into democracy, mature overnight into responsible citizens,
produce a polity with integrity and become a major power in the sub-continent.
All of these dreams seem to have failed us. Failed us to the extent where his
own great-grandson talks of cutting hands.

Still, one must have hope. It just gets tougher to find it.

Best,
selma

[Goanet] ... Khell Tiatr Festival created a huge hungama

Thanks Eddie for coming back on this.
And that’s a real ‘Goemkarponn’

I did not know there was one from another until I read yours.
However, I did get the same on another forum where I did not approve
(as a moderator).

It’s like ‘ Taka Khorpotalem eka kodden ani tannem khorpilem dusrech kodden’

Whatever it is, I am sure, could have put in a different way but
some people prefer the harsh or rude way. It’s true, one can read
one’s personality through his or her writings.

At the most, the director could do was to remove the
stubborn journalist by use of force say using security men
(plenty available at KA inside and outside the hall) rather than
stopping the show thus causing inconvenience or delays to the audience
who paid for the show.

Some people, instead, use such occasion for their own or self publicity.
(At least we know about the HCN from the director’s mouth)

Yet there are some ‘makodd’ here who claim ‘aplench bonk tambddem’

Request: If any one wishes to come back on the subject may do so
by changing the subject line to ‘Tiatr Hungama’ etc thus avoiding
names which I inadvertently included in the subject line.
The same is regretted.

BOUQETS AND BRICKBATS WELCOME but use simple and polite english if not konglish

I was shocked at the diatribe against all NGOs with the beating stick of food
poisoning
by meals supplied by one government sponsored/selected NGO. Self Help Group,no
less! Helping themselves? .After the Education Minister on TV blacklisted the
said NGO, the next day reportedly the same NGO continued to supply meals and
the children refused to partake!  Now they are making school authorities
responsible to check,  a teacher to consume food first etc when the checking
must be done at source.procurement, hygiene, ingredients used, labour and
transportations precautions.
Unfortunately we have to pay for it and keep suffering the Tiatre of the
government daily, since only the courts can protect us and that avenue is also
unfortunately not easily or quickly accessible.

The Pope's moral blunders on outsourcing S A Aiyar Sunday August 02,
2009

Religion and business rarely mix well. This shows up in the encyclical
of Pope Benedict XVI. The encyclical generally supports
globalization, but criticizes western companies that outsource
business to developing countries.
***Religion should guide business. We should criticise globalization and
capitalism,
when the system harms the lesser humans... Globalization has its strong and
weak points.

Capitalism should be moderate.
Otherwise, social justice is not met in human relationships...

The Pope should be thankful for their largesse or he may have to find a
job and do some useful work that generates an income:-))
***The Holy Father has enough "jobs", his mission is large and his work is
for the universal Church

and for the world at large. He does not need another "job" for his income...

My advice to the Vatican, "Stick to religion and helping the poor, and
stay the hell away from economics."
***This advice is faulty. Precisely the Holy Father is teaching the world
how

to improve the quality of life through genuine economic activity.
Regards.

Goanetter Francis Rodrigues (Vasco/Toronto) book launch in

  Details http://www.konkanisongbook.com

-

Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2009 22:26:20 -0700 (PDT)
From: lyrawmn

There is confusion on the numbers, and characteristics of the uninsured
(health) in the US.

The information in M. Goveia post is severely at variance with what has been
published.

Mario responds:

My information is less misleading once we factor in reality and common sense
than what is insinuated by lyrawmn.

To begin with, the common-sense objective should be to help people who really
need financial help in obtaining health care coverage, not just everyone who
does not have it. There are millions who don't have health insurance who can
afford to buy it but haven't done so. It is silly to assume that everyone who
does not have health insurance needs taxpayer help in getting it.

The statists who want the government to destroy the current American system
instead of truly reforming it to help those who need help, estimate the
uninsured as 47 million. The extremists inflate this even higher. The
realists like myself make common sense adjustments to find those who really
need help so we can better help them.

The 47 million figure includes everyone who did not have coverage for even ONE
DAY during the period, which has nothing to do with how many people should get
taxpayer funded assistance.

In fact, the average time many working Americans are uninsured is a few months
not years. They are uninsured simply because, due mostly to government
interference in the free market, tax benefits (social engineering through
taxation) and employer/employee expectations, most people get their health
insurance at work. So, the average time between jobs and health insurance
coverage is a few months, not years.

Next, we have 10-12 million ILLEGAL ALIENS that are included in this figure.
Thus these are not AMERICANS who tax paying Americans should be helping.

This leaves 35 million.

Then we have the 30 and under age group who can afford insurance, but choose
not to get it. They do not believe that they really need it.

Then we have the self employed middle-income people who make over $75,000 a
year and also CHOOSE not to have insurance even though they can afford to buy
it.

In 2007, 17.6 million of the uninsured had annual incomes of more than $50,000
and 9.1 million earned more than $75,000.

Then there are millions who ARE eligible for government benefits, who either do
not know or do not bother to enroll themselves. Emergency rooms routinely OFFER
to help them enroll, but still many do not. Privacy issues? Don't like the
government? Don't want to bother? All of the above?

When all these factors are considered, the real number of those Americans who
through no fault of their own cannot get any health care insurance either
through pre existing conditions or are not poor enough to get Medicaid falls to
the neighborhood of 12-15 million people.

These are the hard core uninsured who really need help and should be helped.

Hi Bosco,

Rather than writing 4 to 5 goanet posts a day, and cause Goanet moderators
some pirachit, the reactionary post-master should do some reading.  But not the
Palin twitter messages! Perhaps the right-winger should read the following post
"GOPs misplaced rage" by a leading conservative economist.

Bruce Bartlett was one of the original supply-siders, helping draft the
Kemp-Roth tax bill in the 1970s. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was a leading
Republican economist. He now considers himself to be a political independent.
He is the author of Reaganomics: Supply-Side Economics in Action  and Impostor:
How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy . His
latest book, The New American Economy: The Failure of Reaganomics and a New Way
Forward, will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in October.

Albert writes:A friend of mine narrated this to me " I happened to visit a
home for the aged once along with my friend. I met a nice looking Linda there.
She was celebrating her 82nd birthday with a very sad face. The table in her
room was nicely decorated by the nuns. There was a big extra large flower
basket on the table and a nice chocolate cake .Along with me there were other
friends who wanted to share with Linda. We sang happy birthday Linda in chorus
after the nuns lit a candle for her. She did not move an inch nor was ready to
cut the cake. I went to her and in sweet voice said " Linda see how your son
has spent so much of money to send this basket and the cake. She got up angrily
and took the flower basket and flunged it out through the window. I do not need
this. I do not need the cake too. I would have been happy if my son had to come
with his family to wish me without flowers. Can flowers replace the love that I
have poured on my son ? My only child after four mi
scarriages that I had. I only know how many prayers I offered to my almighty
to give me this child but what is the use ? He forcebly brought me here, and
does not even want to visit me once a month. He sends money through post .What
have I done to him that I get this treatment ? " She burst into tears. I had
seen lagero munna bai but I was not strong enough to lift the son by his legs
and hang him upside down like sanjay Dutt did. Said my friend with tears in his
eyes. He asked me " Why are catholics so rude to their parents ? " I do not
know. My father died early before I could do him any service though I wanted
him. My mother died at 81 and lived happily with me. I was feeling her dynamic
power in her when she was alive. We did not have lot of trouble dealing with
her old age except for the last eight months that she was bed ridden. She ate
very little but loved my children very much. Even though she was old and weak
she did some work at least in the house.

Melbourne: Goan girl selected for Victorian state Girls Cricket team

August 14, 2009
Melbourne, Australia

Yolanne Amor Carvalho, 13, a school girl from Good Samaritan Catholic School,
Roxburgh Park, Victoria, Australia, secured her place in the Victorian Primary
Schools State Girls cricket squad for 2009. Proud to be the first Goan to be
selected in the squad of 16 and cricket being her passion, Yolanne is also a
great
admirer of Lorna and Sachin Tendulkar and met both at their residence in Bombay
during her Christmas holidays 2008/2009.

Being part of a large Goan community here in Melbourne and making all Goans
feel
proud in Goa and around the world, Yolanne is a daughter of well known
personality
Mario Carvalho & Cherylanne (Chinky) Carvalho, from Madel Pequeno, Margao Goa
and
also a cousin of Valerie Carvalho who represented Goa Juniors Girl Soccer team
2009.

Though her season bowling career best is 5/5 and winning the coaches award
while
performing for the Roxburgh Park Cricket club boys U-12 which lost the Grand
final
by one run this year, hopes of being the best all rounder for the current state
cricket tournament which is held at Brisbane and also dreams of representing
the
Australia womens Cricket team in the near future.

The Sport Australia Championships will be held in January 2010 in Toowoomba,
Australia (ENDS)

Why use a Wi-Fi when on the move? You could use any smartphone and get access
to the web. I use an iPhone that I hacked myself. But at home, I use BSNL
broadband - which I think is awesome, considering just a few years ago, most
Goans didn't have a landline to begin with.

I am currently working from Goa - connecting to my office in New York via a
broadband and it costs only Rs 750/month - unlimited access. My whole place is
hooked up to a backup power system, so whether the current is ON or OFF, my
systems are always up.

Since it could get cumbersome to disconnect and get fresh connection every time
I come to Goa, I have decided to retain my connection all year round, even
though I may not use it, for months at a time, when in New York. I see it as
only $15 in monthly expense, but its worth the hassle you'd have to go through
to get a temp connection every time you come to Goa.

Good luck,

Jim F
Colva, Goa.

The main educational event was the final public exam. If this is the eucational

Not unusual for you to have had 200 boys and girls in class in your

[Goanet] Workshop on Prevention of Swine Flu in Panaji, Goa !!

Goanetter Francis Rodrigues (Vasco/Toronto) book launch in
London, England @ the World Goa Day festivities on 15 Aug at 7pm

Respected Sir,
Greetings,

Sir, I would like to humbly draw your attention towards the Global Natural
Catastrophe, a deadly pandemic, which is heading towards our Goa- Swine Flu,
and which ( when you receive this communication may have taken at least a
few dozen human lives in India) has already started showing dangerous signs
of spreading at an alarming pace.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the Pune administration
which is the epicenter of this deadly virus in India is seriously planning
to virtually shutdown the city following the Mexican model resulting in an
obvious shift of the epicenter to the State of Goa because of its
vulnerability. The Mexican authorities, the origin point of the H1N1 virus,
as you may be aware, practically locked down the whole city economy to the
check the spread of the viral infection.

Thinking that Goa is safe as well as a tourist destination (and with
adjacent cities having shut their doors), it is quite likely that all
unsuspecting virus-infected tourists from nearby states will gate-crash into
Goa to find respite here. This will eventually pose a grave danger to the
life and economy of this state, converting it ultimately into the second
epicenter of the Swine- Flu Pandemic. Panaji, being the capital city of Goa
(you can imagine) will naturally be the worst affected city by this
phenomenon in India. National Institute of Virology (NIV) has now declared
this virus as airborne!!!

You may be aware that the World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that
as time passes and considering the sanitation measures prevailing in Indian
sub-continent, at least 33 % of Indian population will be affected with this
deadly pandemic.

To prevent the Swine Flu pandemic outbreak and to spread awareness about
the virus and preventive measure to be taken in event of such an outbreak ,
Indology Goa in association with some governmental and non-governmental
agencies is planning to organise a one day workshop in Panaji, Goa.

In this workshop, medical experts from all the major hospitals in Goa as
well as renowned medical practitioners from the field of Alophathe and
Ayurveda will be invited to deliver their scholarly lecturers about the
preventive measure to be taken in this regard. Representatives from all the
walks of life in Goa including Hospitality and Tourism, major Industrial
Houses, State governments official , academicians, small and medium scale
industries, social and charitable organisations, workers union etc will be
invited to participate in this workshop to clarifies their doubts about
checking the outbreak of Swine Flu in their respective Sector.

A free medical check- up camp ( alophathic and ayurvedic) will also be
organised in this event. All the participants of this workshop will be given
the three layer surgical mask during the proceedings and the expert panel
will explain them about tackling the spread of this H1N1 virus along with
live demonstration. Free saplings of the ayurvedic Gulvale and Tulsi plants
will also be given to the participants along with other promotional
literature such as Swine Flu remedial brochures, Vehicle stickers, T-shirts
etc.

We shall be keep you update about the program schedule of this workshop
within a week's time. We also request you to depute maximum representative
for this workshop to spread awareness among the masses about this deadly
virus. We appeal you to associate with us for this event. We shall not
require any monetary support for this event, but only your support in kind
and good faith.

If you are willing to participate in this event, kindly ask your office to
send us an acceptance and confirmation in this regard.

Anticipating your wholeheartedly co-operation,

Warm regards,
Anjali Mohan Rao.

Dear Mr. Bharve,

Re: Swine Flu

Thank you Mr. Bharve for your vigilance alerting our sleepy and inefficient
administrators.

I am fully supportive for your admirable suggestions and advice which all Goans
Must
adhere to without delay.

As usual Indian Hordes always like to trample on our good nature, good health
and
liberties.

They are selfish and our Goan administrators are selfish, self-centered and we
should dethrone Them if they don't work fast on this matter..let the Goans know
about this and these so called Inefficient ministers must be accountable for
any
deaths in Goa and these ministers must be Sent to gallows for any deaths in Goa.

Thank you, Mr. Bharve.

Best wishes
