Kudchodem

save Goan culture and Goan identity." - Tomazinho Cardozo.


Goa, Feb 22: 2nd Konkani (Roman Script) Literary and Cultural Convention 
held at Kudchodem was held at Frank Fernands Nagar, Ravindra Bhavan, 
Kudchodem, Goa on 20th and 21st February. The programme was organised by 
the Dalgado Konkani Akademy of Goa.

A colourful venue was setup for the programme and the venue was named 
after welknown Konkani film personality Late Frank Fernand and the main 
stage was named after Late Albert S Carvalho.


The programme started with the procession lead by the traditional music. 
Welcome committee president Fr. Manuel Gomes, Working President of the 
organizing committee Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, main speaker Fr. Bonaventure 
D'Pietro, MLA of Kudchodem Mr. Shyam Satardekar, MLA of Kepem Mr. 
Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar, Dalgado Konkani Akademy President Premanand A 
Lotlikar and the programme secretary Mr Walter Menezes were present at 
the dais.


Former Goa Assembly speaker and the first president of newly formed 
Tiatr Akademy of Goa Mr Tomazinho Cardozo explained the confusion of 
language and scripts in Goa. "All Konkani people of Goa with whole mind 
and soul worked for the cause of Konkani. They fought united during the 
opinion poll and also to make Konkani a state language. But 
unfortunately someone with a evil agenda inserted a phrase "Konkani in 
Devnagiri" in a official language act of Goa. This phrase divided Goans 
and thus started a controversy" he said. He explained the importance of 
preserving Konkani written in all sects and all scripts, there by making 
it to flourish it in all angles and directions. "Only Konkani language 
in all script and not in a particular script, can save Goan culture and 
Goan identity. " he affirmed. He also stressed the need of uniting the 
broken society by uniting all scripts of Konkani and giving equal 
importance to all."


Dalgado Konkani Akademy President Premnand A Lotlikar said that "We 
extend our full support to Devnagiri script as we also give equal 
importance to Roman script, Kannada script and other scripts of Konkani. 
Thus our work strategy is very clear. But the intention of the people 
who insist on 'One Language, One script and One society' to destroy the 
Konkani of the people of other scripts, dialects and sects. This is 
nothing but a fascist idea. These people need to accept this fact for 
the healthy growth of the Konkani language even if it is bitter to them 
to digest." he advised


"The light of Konkani language needs to be lead by the youngsters" said 
Fr. Manuel Gomes in his welcome speech. "The taste of milk and honey of 
Konkani language was first tasted in seventeen century because of the 
hard work of European missionaries. They had brought out several Konkani 
books in Roman script. But later on the Konkani had a deep sleep. There 
were several reasons for this sleep and the key one was the mad order 
given by Mr. Conde De Alvor prohibiting people to speak, read and write 
Konkani. Konkani in Roman script has the history of more than five 
hundred (500) years and this is the major yardstick for Konkani language 
to get the state language status." he informed.


Fr. Bonaventure D'Pietro said that "There is a vast history of the 
contribution of Roman script in the development of Konkani language. 
When I was in Mumbai in 1963 there were atleast 6 Konkani weeklies in 
Roman script. Konkani people used to work selflessly even sacrifying 
their basic needs of food and shelter. But when the grant came from the 
Govt the Devnagiri lobby was shrewd enough to corner it only to their 
people. They did not want the real workers to get the funds. They 
pre-decided the awardees and then published their books and managed to 
gather all the funds only for themselves. But Fr Freddy D'Costa and 
others stood like a pillar to fight against this injustice. 
Unfortunately he met with an accident. This was a major setback. But 
once again Tomazinho and others have come together to fight this 
injustice." he said.

I was in Goa last Xmas /New Year: mass tourism, Goa trance music, and 
everything that should go on as expected by the masses that go there at 
that time of the year. Elsewhere there is still something that might be 
"Goan" - but am not sure I know what that is supposed to be? Traditional 
songs? Maybe - but I did notice how conspicuously absent they were! 
Could not find any sign of them? Surely Mando etc could also be marketed 
to foreigners (if locals don't like them any more!) - mando does not fit 
the Calangute etc background and atmosphere at all, but elsehwere with 
the backdrop of palm trees, single houses, nature..my imagination tells 
me it could be a unique and unforgettable experience.

Promotion of CHESS in Goa

Chess is a learning tool , an Indian Game which develops Reasoning,
Decision making and many other abilities. 
 
• We at Chess
Activity Centre look at chess as learning tool. Its help to develop Reasoning,
Decision making as also concentration. It’s a
good tonic for brain. 
• All students
should play chess, at least few games per week . 
• They should
take part in Chess Tournament at least once in a month.
We should concentrate on those children who are considered weak in
studies. If these children play chess it will be good for them as well as
Society. 
• Do we have
infrastructure in place for children to play chess?
• Is there
Motivation to play chess?
Chess as Sport
• At the Government
level Sports Dept. organizes Secondary School Chess Tournament, Higher
Secondarily and College level chess tournament every year.
• Inter Secondary
School tournaments are held at District level where in around 30 schools
participate. 
• There are 450
Secondary Schools in Goa.
• Primary School.
• Chess talent can
be identified at the age of 6/7/8. 
• This spotted
talent by the time he is out of Primary School (4th Std) is a recognized
good chess player. 
• There is no
system at Govt. level to identify chess talent at Primary School level. 
100 Job opportunities in 2 years
22000 children are born every year in Goa.
(22000X4)  88000 children learn in
Primary Schools in Goa.
• If all parents of
all these children agreed to spend Rs.50/- per week on education of Chess of
their Child! 
• Its Job
Opportunities for 1100 with income of 4k per week. (88k X 50 =4400K)
• I know all
parents can not afford these, as also there is no craze for Chess.
 
But let us look it in a different angle.
• More than 50%
of  our population live in Major towns.
• Even if 10% of
parents of Primary Students from Major towns  agrees to spend Rs.50/- per week 
to educate CHESS to their child, it
will create Job opportunity to 100 Chess Knowing Youths.
• If we work
together we can achieve creation of job opportunities for 100 in Chess in next
2 years.
Educate child about Chess Board, Chess pieces and How these pieces
moves
• Primary Chess
Trainer.
• Any Primary
School Teacher can do this.
• We can ask KG
administrators to introduce chess for Upper KG 20 hours in a year. 
• Playing Pawn
Chess Game Tournament at this level etc. 
• Chess players who
are studying in college can use their few hours in a  week to train child and 
earn some pocket
money.
• Established Good
Chess players can professionally train to bring the child to level of getting
FIDE Rating. 
• We also should
Invite good Chess Coaches to facilitate Goan Chess Players to reach IM/GM level
at the earliest. 
 
• Regular
Children Chess Tournament
• Chess tournament
of 25 children 5  rounds can be completed
in 2 hours. 
• Such tournament
can be organised in a garden, below big tree shade, parking space, etc. few
parents or  Higher Secondary Student
can  organise this.
We have to built our infrastructure.
Motivate
Schools, Clubs, Housing Societies, Colonies  to organize
Chess Tournament.

relating to chess should flow smoothly is passed on quickly, efficiently.

MARGAO: A lawyer representing John Fernandes, arrested by police in the case of 
alleged rape of a Russian woman at Colva last year, argued before the district 
and sessions court on Monday that the accused is entitled for bail as a false 
case was filed against him by the victim to extort money. 

During the hearing of the bail application, Fernandes' lawyer, Aswin Naik, said 
"The entire case is fabricated in order with the intent of extortion of money 
from Fernandes by the victim," Naik contended that if the claim of the victim 
about the rape is correct, then it is important to know as to why she did not 
mention about the rape in her first complaint to the police. 

The theory of rape was raked only after the case was handed over to the crime 
branch, Naik said and alleged that "statement filed by the victim with the 
crime branch investigating the case on December 5 mentions that she was raped 
which was not the case in the earlier statement and the two statements differ 
invariably". 

He further stated the entire investigation in the case by the crime branch till 
now is based on false evidence and fabricated facts with an intention of 
maligning the image of Fernandes. After his arguments for over two hours, the 
court adjourned the matter for Tuesday to hear the counter arguments of the 
public prosecutor. 

Meanwhile, Fernandes has moved another application at the sessions court on 
Monday asking for some sections in the charge sheet against him to be dropped.

It is made out by some that non-Goans are not needed in Goa. The fact is : 
right from milk,
to vegetables to fish to labour, Goa depends on Karnataka. Choke the pipeline of
food to Goa, and Goa will come to a standstill. I mean one can't live on alcohol
alone. The susegaad lifestyle of Goa which blokes like Soter are glorifying is 
the
reason for all this.

Rajan might have solved his own problem by putting salaam to Uncle Sam, but he
has no solution for Goa's problems other than spread hatred, and chauvinism.
The poor from rest of India dont come to Goa for begging. They work hard and
earn their living. 

We have seen in Herald letters that state that Goans are not willing to work 
even
when offered jobs. Right from barbers, to waiters, non-Goans serve Goan society.
Go to any hotel owner and ask why he hasnt hired Goans. Goans are not 
interested is
the answer.

It is one thing to talk and another to walk the talk.

tournament.  Playing in Chess tournaments
itself will help young children in many ways. Important one is It will give
good tonic for brain. He also stressed importance of Yoga in our life .

promote chess in Goa and also promised to organised a
Yoga Camp by Nehern Acharya.” Smt. Nandini Sahay Director The International
Centre Goa sain in her vote of thanks. 
112 school students from all over Goa took part in this chess tournament.

Dear Mervyn Lobo,
As I understand, the passion for ice hockey is almost encoded in the good 
Canadian 'DNA' and Canadian ethos/experience. 
It is afterall Canada's  national game, curling be dammed.
 
Is it then true that one becomes fully acculturated and assimilated [and can 
call oneself a Canadian] only after one watches/ follows and develops an 
appreciation for  the nuances of ice hockey - the great Canadian pastime?
Is this too much to ask of immigrants to Canada?
 
On another matter, praise rightfully goes to the US Ice Hockey squad. Do you 
know them?

Dear all,

I got to the following story after following the url sent in by Dr.
Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.

While traveling through Dubai and Qatar, I was quite impressed at the
quality of the foods and the cleanliness of the restaurants.

This short 2+ minute video is taken as the Dubai health inspectors
visit the kitchen and food storage areas of a restaurant (most likely
an Indian restaurant).

Hi JP, Copyright laws protect the work here currently for sixty (or
so) years after the death of the author. This is more or less the same
situation internationally too. Many of these publications came out in
the 19th century. So...

Even the works of Tagore are out of copyright now. Which means any
publisher can legally publish the same, without restrictions. The
Asian Educational Services is based in Delhi. Their website is

Xavier Center of Historical Research, along with TRANS URBAN 2050 (an
urban study group based in Austria), URBZ and Institute of Urbanology
(India) are hosting a series of presentations and discussions  on
architecture, urbanism and issues related to cities, drawing mainly
from experiences in Italy. The speakers are from Italy and have been
involved in innovative projects, historical studies and activism
there.

The Union Budget is the Annual Financial Statement of India presented every 
year on the last working day of February.
This time, however, the Union Budget will be presented on February 26, as 
February 28th is a Sunday. Also, since the stock market is closed on Saturday 
(Feb 27), the finance ministry decided that the Budget should be presented on a 
day when the markets are open so as to gauge the reaction of the market 
players. Thus, Budget will be presented on February 26 this year.

For the United Progressive Alliance-II this is the second Budget: the first 
having been presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on July 6, 2009, 
soon after the Congress-led coalition was voted to power in the general 
elections last year.

For the record, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee will present the Rail Budget 
on February 24, while the Economic Survey will be presented on February 25.

With people reposing faith in the UPA and voting for stability, this is the 
government's chance to fulfill its promises, ensure growth and development of 
the country, check runaway prices, and offer succour to the aam aadmi.

Can any one on this forum shed some light on a Tiatrist by the name of Vincent
Semedo from Bombay, who use to act mostly as a female and had written a number
of Tiatrs as well, one of them was "Muzo Recadh Tuca"  it was said that once he
had composed and sang a song criticising a fellow actor and hence was
excommunicated from the Tiatrist fraternity.
