This Will Give You Cold Chills!

Geert Wilders is a Dutch Member of Parliament.

This issue is alarming to Goans too as the rest
of India
feels Goa is Europe or Middle East for them.

And that is precisely why we educated Goans are
reduced to a
minority class and have a Democratic Government of the rogues, by the
rogues
and for the rogues !!

Arn't you are forgetting the great songstress from Cansaulim, Georgina Jacques.

Not sure I heard her sing (definitely listen to her argue and express

She resembles the likeliness (the thick eye boroughs) and the spirit

[Goanet] Let's turn Goa into an urban loo, says bhailo

To Goanet -

See item below. Bhailo Srivastava is commissioning a study to explore
the idea of turning Goa into a toilet to replicate the rathole in India he
comes
from. I have every confidence that Goans will embrace the proposal like
they do every proposal made by every third-rate bhailo. Besides, this bhailo
will be armed with a "study" in collaboration with some white folks. Now
that's like icing on the Goa crapcake.

Goa: Interspersing rural and urban

The debate over Goa over its urban future, the fight to preserve its

SHRUTI KHAIRNAR bure...@gomantaktimes.com PUNE: Goa has always been an idyllic
weekend getaway for the middle classes of Mumbai and Pune but few know or want
to acknowledge that the state is in the midst of an intense debate concerning
its urban future. However Goa's fight to preserve its biodiversity and for
inclusive development like rejecting SEZs can be an example for other cities
and
states in the country.
This issue has been selected as a subject of a year long study by Mejan Arc
which is a forum of The Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm that investigates
issues relevant to the general public. Arc students will be assisted by the
Mumbai based Institute of Urbanology that organizes participatory workshops,
designs adaptable structures and develops web tools for urban communities and
practitioners.
Founding partner, Institute of Urbanology, Rahul Srivastava said, "There has
been no strong ideology of urbanism in Goa as the life in towns associated with
an economic function is not very different from the surroundihg villages;for
example Mapusa is a market place and Panjim is the administrative center. Hence
we will explore Goa as an example of an urban system where different economies
can exist together." Can Goa show the way for the rest of the country in a
transformation from a rural to an urban economy, thereby offering a convincing
urban alternative to the mega-cities and can Goa's biological and cultural
diversity contribute to a resilient urban complex are the questions that the
study aims to find answers to.
Srivastava's argument of rural and urban over-lap is interesting. "India, China
and Africa have an overwhelming rural population. What we are saying is that
the
idea of villages is much more complicated while government policies make
distinct divisions between the urban and rural. There is a simplistic
understanding of villages that needs to change."
With the study of Goa the Institute of Urbanology is moving away from the
metropolis and challenging the notion of urbanism.
"We will be opening an office in Goa soon. We had a workshop with Mejan Arc
last
year and are in a process of conceptual shaping of the programme, arguments and
getting together activists and other groups," said Srivastava.

Mr Baliga,

You fail to undertand that if given a chance, half the Indians would happily
leave India in a nano-second to go settle in the United States or some wealthy
Western nation.

Most Indian Americans I know, who go back to India permanently, is when they
are retired or semi-retired. They spend their youth in a foreign country and
then go back to India to die - which is an excellent idea, considering the
Western world can be very challenging (weather-wise) for senior citizens. The
percentage of younger generation of Indians returning back to India
permanently, is miniscule.

By the way, even I took OCI - not because of better prospects in India! You got
to be kidding if that was the reason I took the OCI. Even I have plans to come
to spend sizeable amount of time in Goa India, but I intend to do it when I am
still young - not when my bones begin to creak!

[Goanet] The Church at the Service of the Nation (2)

2010-07-05 Thread Ivo

THE CHURCH AT THE SERVICE OF THE NATION (2)

1.7: As Jesus divested himself of all craving for power, “emptied himself,
taking the form of a servant” (Phil 2:7), the Church has to renounce all
claims to power and honours, it must not rule by love of domineering power,
but by power of kenotic love. Like Jesus, the Servant of Yahweh, the Church
has to overcome temptations of triumphalism, prestige, glory and fame,
wealth. It takes care of human material and physical well-being, it works
to save the whole man, body-soul unity. There is no dichotomy between the
material and spiritual. Man is a unity, spirit and matter simultaneously.
Both the material and spiritual well-being is considered as a sign of
God's love for man, since Jesus came to save man as a whole and therefore
all that man is. Jesus has to offer his grace at the level of man and
of his material needs. But the miracle is always a sign of God's concern
for the ANAWIM. Jesus refuses to perform this sign, if it is only for a
show-off and triumphalism (cf.Jn 6:15). He wants to challenge and change
Man and lead him to faith.

1.8: He refuses to give a display of power by throwing himself down from
the pinnacle of the Temple. His food is to do the Will of the Father (Jn
4:34). The Messiah must suffer and he is ready (Lk 24:26). Later on Jesus
will refuse to save himself from the Cross miraculously and give a
crushing defeat to the Evil/Devil (cf.Lk 4:13, 'until an opportune time',
which is the time of his passion, cf.Lk 19:47;22:3.53). He overcomes also
another temptation of political messiahship. Israel was politically lost
and so she awaited a political Messiah who would liberate her from the
yoke of the Romans. The people expected that Jesus would be their king
and would exercise his power in the political sense. But Jesus refuses to
do it. His kingship is not of this world (Jn 18:36). It is not the
exercise of the political power. His kingdom is the supreme revelation/
epiphany of love. He showed it on the Cross by doing his Father's Will (Mt
28:18; Rv 19:16). Thus, Jesus destroys the kingdom of the Devil and
plunders his goods (Mk 3:27). He reveals his self-identity and overcomes
gross  misunderstanding of  his messianic mission (cf.Lk 22:31-32;
23:35-39). The Church has also to preserve its self-identity and be faithful
to its mission of the new Israel (Gal 6:16). It is the messianic people,
the sacrament of salvation, making visible the saving grace of
Christ. It is called to bring all the domains of human existence to the
Grace of Christ. It has to handle bread and earthly resources for the
service of Man. Its mission is not only to "save souls", since man cannot
live by the word of God alone. The Church has to care for the uplift of the
needy.

1.9: In short, the Grace of Christ has to be offered in a tangible form of
a service; on the other hand, the Church is not merely a philanthropic
institution, since man cannot live on bread alone. Therefore, the service
of the Church cannot stop on purely human level. Man must be put in contact
with the Grace of Christ. Our social work must be a sign of God's love.
But the Church becomes a prey to greed and ambition, prestige and
popularity. It may become partisan of the influential and rich in the
society. It should have "preferential love for the poor", following
the example of Christ, who 'though he was rich, he became poor for our
sake' (2 Cor 8:9). Its only Glory must be the Cross of Christ (2 Cor
10:17; Gal 6:14). The external glory of the Church can become an obstacle
and danger of faith. It has to shun party politics and save communion. Our
idols should not be money, power, status, politics.

2.1: Context of India and Goa: We are still in transitional period, we have
to be still emotionally integrated and politically mature. The new economic
policy (NEP), with its new slogans of liberalisation and globalisation, has
played havoc in the realm of economics, culture and politics. There are
ethnic clashes, communal conflicts, socio-economic tensions. Millions of
people still live in dehumanizing, oppressing poverty—on or below the
poverty line. They are crying for justice and human dignity. The situation
of the poor has been worsened. They cannot lead a truly human life. They
are politically still victims of hunger, malnutrition, disease and
illiteracy. Women are treated as door-mats, as second-class citizens in this
country, they suffer injustice and oppression from mother’s womb to their
tomb, from the cradle to the grave. Female foeticide, the killing of the
baby girl, sex slavery, rape, murder--these are some of the ways in which
women are oppressed in our country today.

2.2: There is still unrest in the country, particularly in Jammu and
Kashmir. The land of Mahatma has become a slaughter-house, where innocent
people

[Goanet] Powerful letter from the Editor of the Times of India to the Prime Minister of India

2010-07-05 Thread Ren
*Must Read ! Very Powerfully Worded. Bravo - Prakash Bajaj, Editor of Times
of India.*

*LETTER OF THE EDITOR OF "THE TIMES OF INDIA" TO THE MOST CORRUPTED PRIME
MINISTER OF INDIA *

*Dear Mr. Prime minister, I am a typical mouse from Mumbai. In the local
train compartment which has capacity of 100 persons, I travel with 500 more
mice. Mouse at least squeaks, but we don't even do that.*
*
Today I heard your speech, in which you said, 'NO BODY WOULD BE SPARED'. I
would like to remind you that fourteen years have passed since serial bomb
blasts in Mumbai took place. Dawood was the main conspirator. Till today
he is not caught. All our Bollywood actors, our builders, our Gutka king
keep meeting him, but your Government can not catch him. Reason is simple;
all your ministers are hand in glove with him. If any attempt is made to
catch him, everybody will be exposed. Your statement 'NOBODY WOULD BE
SPARED' is nothing but a cruel joke on these unfortunate people of India.*
*
Enough is enough. As such, after seeing terrorist attack carried out by
about a dozen young boys, I realize that if same thing continues, days are
not far away when terrorists will attack by air, destroy our nuclear
reactors and there will be one more Hiroshima.*
*
We the people are left with only one mantra. Womb to Bomb to Tomb. You
promised Mumbaikar Shanghai; what you have given us is Jalianwala Baug.*
*
Today only your home minister resigned. What took you so long to kick out
this joker? Only reason was that he was loyal to Gandhi family. Loyalty to
Gandhi family is more important than blood of innocent people, isn't it?*
*
I am born and brought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight years. Believe me,
corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar. Look at all the
politicians, Sharad Pawar, Chagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal Thackeray ,
Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackeray, Vilasrao Deshmukh all are rolling in money.
Vilasrao Deshmukh was one of the worst Chief ministers I have seen. His only
business is to increase the FSI every other day, make money and send it to
Delhi, so Congress can fight next election. Now the **clown has found a new
way and will increase FSI for fishermen, so they can build concrete houses
right on sea shore. Next time terrorists can comfortably live in those
houses, enjoy the beauty of the sea and then attack our Mumbai at their
will.*
*
Recently, I had to purchase a house in Mumbai. I met about two dozen
builders. Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like me knows
this and with all your intelligent agency & CBI, you and your finance
ministers are not aware of it. Where all the black money goes? **To the
underworld isn't it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to vacate
people by force. I myself was victim of it. If you have time please come to
me, I will tell you everything.*
*
If this has been a land of fools, idiots, then I would not have ever cared
to write to you this letter. Just see the tragedy. On one side we are
reaching the moon, people are so intelligent; and on the other side, you
politicians have converted nectar into deadly poison. I am everything Hindu,
Muslim, Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule
caste, and Creamy Schedule caste; only what I am not is INDIAN. You
politicians have raped every part of Mother India by your policy of divide
and rule.*
*
Take example of our Former President Abdul Kalam. Such an intelligent
person; such a fine human being. But you politician didn't even spare him.
Your party along with opposition joined hands, because politicians feel they
are supreme and there is no place for good person.*
*
**Dear Mr Prime minister, you are one of the most intelligent persons, a
most learned, corrupted, crooked person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR.
First and foremost, expose all selfish politicians. Ask Swiss banks to
give names of all Indian account holders. Give reins of CBI to independent
agency. Let them find wolves among us. There will be political upheaval,
but that will be better than the dance of death which we are witnessing
every day. Just give us ambience where we can work honestly and without
fear. Let there be rule of law. Everything else will be taken care of.*
*
Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be lead by one person,
or you want to lead the nation of 100 Crore people?

Augusto Pinto's "theory of motivations" helps explain the farrago of
venom directed at BJP and Manohar Parrikar on Goanet in the last
10 years by Christaos. According to Pinto's theory, their anti-BJP

The "no doubt" paired with "apparently" is a subtle point, one which

[Goanet] Nadia was styling herself as Pacheco’ s wife’

Nadia was styling herself as Pacheco’s wife’

Panaji, July 5 (IANS) After calling 28-year-old Nadia Torrado former
Goa tourism minister Mickky Pacheco’s “family friend” ever since she
killed herself by consuming rat poison, his counsel Monday said that
she had been “advertising herself as Pachecho’s wife”.
Advocate Surendra Desai, arguing on behalf of Pacheco before the
additional district and sessions judge in Margao, also said that Nadia
could have consumed the rat poison after reading an advertisement for
a local theatre performance in a local newspaper recently, which said
Mickky Pacheco would be attending the performance with his ‘wife’
Viola.

“Nadia was advertising herself as Pacheco’s wife. That is evident from
the airlines tag found at her house, which read her identity as wife
of tourism minister,” Desai said, referring to a charred boarding pass
found by the police at Nadia’s home after her death.

“On May 14 there was an advertisement about a drama scheduled in the
Benaulim constituency, represented by Pacheco, in which Viola
Fernandes, was named as wife of Pacheco (chief guest for the theatre
performance), which might have irked Nadia,” Desai claimed.

Booked twice for assaulting government servants at work, Pacheco’s
flamboyant and bohemian lifestyle also includes imported vehicles,
designers clothes, occasionally wearing colourful bandanas to work and
relationships with several women.

While Pacheco is married to Sara, he is currently living in with Viola
Fernandes, who he has referred to as his wife on several occasions.
Sara has already filed a case of bigamy and domestic violence against
Pacheco with the authorities in Goa.

The former minister who once told the media “I can have as many women
as I want”, is also alleged to have had an affair with Nadia at the
time of her death.

[Goanet] Ektaim Zavum Ters Korumya –Pray the Ro sary in Konkani

2010-07-05 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Folks,
I have been requested to post the following here.

Ektaim Zavum Ters Korumya –Pray the Rosary in Konkani

A new website www.konkanirosary.org has been unveiled which
allows viewers to participate in reciting all five decades of the Glorious
mystery in Konkani.

The recitation is based on the on  April 11, 2010, event when more than 220
people from all parts of
the Greater Toronto Area, came to the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in
Scarborough for a service appropriately termed "Ektaim Zavum Ters
Korumya". The entire service rosary was videotaped for subsequent
post-processing and display on the Internet.

Preparing the video for the Internet was a daunting task
according to Michael Pinto of Winnipeg, who spearheaded the effort.

Michael  writes “We were breaking new ground and had to start from scratch. The
developers of
http://www.comepraytherosary.org website generously gave us their underlying
software templates and visual interfaces, but there were strict conditions for
it’s use. No logos or promotional material to be displayed.

A considerable effort had to be spent in preparing the
videotapes before use in the program. Sound tracks had to be edited for timing
and quality. We had to go to a recording studio to re-record some Some of the
hymns and music. had to be re-recorded in a studio.  I also had to go to a
community college to learn videotape
editing to remove extraneous sections for the tape and ensure smooth continuity
and reduce editing/dubbing costs

The task of matching video and voice to the computer program
was also a challenge. Each decade of the rosary is recited at a different
timing depending on the reciter. Hence getting the rosary beads to change
colour after each Holy Mary is an arduous task and had to be done bead by bead
for each decade. “

The task of mastering the workings of the program and  preparing it for the
Internet was done in
Goa itself  by an IT team  team in Goa . Those following the rosary
have the option of viewing the Toronto service as a backdrop, or seeing screen
shots of Goa’s famous churches.

The site also includes an “Intentions Page” for dedicating
the recitation.

Plans are in hand for adding the remaining mysteries based
using on tapings done in San Francisco, and those scheduled for Melbourne, and
London (UK)

In a letter to the Toronto Pray the Rosary supporters,
Michael adds…

The Konkani Rosary recitation will serve to enhance our
spiritual well-being. It will bind us to our Goan heritage, and maintain our
links with Goa. It should thrive and continue, but can only do so from grass
roots support the world over. Please help it continue.

2010-07-05 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

Muchos gracias to Floriano Lobo for a reasoned, well thought-out,
rational post. He has done his kindergarten class teacher proud today.
It is nice to see fellow shysters close ranks with such froth and
zeal. Now if only Selma Cardoso, Rajan Narayan and Gadgil
would rush in to lend fellow traveler Admin-bab another
crutch or two, my cup of happiness will spill over.

Floriano's (impotent) bluster has been duly noted. Floriano
of the "My friend Audhut" fame, the same Audhut who later
it came to light had funded the Goa Su-raj scheme at its inception,
a nit that hadn't been revealed earlier. The same Audhut
who flouted the Supreme Court judgement, later persuading
bum pal Digu to rewrite the law to suit him. Sweet to know that
the Goa Su-raj scheme was built on such a solid foundation
with help from "My friend Audhut," that prince among men.

But the absolute delight - Lord O Lord, thank you - is that it was Floriano
himself who had declared me the GREAT GOAN PATRIOT on Goanet
and sent oodles of praise my way. I am gratified to note that he thinks
as highly of me today as he thought back then even though I did not
slip a single cent into the bowl that feeds his Goa Su-raj scheme.

About Floriano's fantasy that I would call him from London to
talk about Manohar-bab, I must disown credit for this charming piece
of fiction. I did not know of the existence of this Goan Quixote until
he himself deigned to call me one day in Goa and peddle his Goa Su-raj
scheme. And even though I did not fall for the scheme, I must thank
Floriano for still declaring me a GREAT GOAN PATRIOT and
authoring a several kilobytes of fulsome praise in my honour.

Oh and one more thing - next week I am meeting Manohar-bab
here in Panjim, and next month I expect another tête-à-tête with him
in California. Last week I had a highly classified meeting with Dr. Anil Desai
and Dr. Anand Virgincar at an exclusive London hotel. Imagine, 2 bamons
and 1 bhat (super-bamon) plotting more Goanet intrigue. Who
knows that these secretive RSS-wallahs will do next!

PS: Admin Noronha had claimed once on Goanet that Manohar Parrikar
is my relative. Admin-bab as always was peering up the wrong skirt.
In the interest of full disclosure I should point out that Digu is also
related to me, and it is a much closer connection than Manohar-bab's.
Warm regards,

Ghana goalkeeping coach Edward Ansah's heart beats for India

By Abhishek Roy

Cape Town, July 5 (IANS) If there is one coach in this World Cup whose
heart beats for India, it is Ghana's goalkeeping coach Edward Ansah.

Ansah, one of the finest goalkeepers Africa ever produced, ended his
playing career with Goa's I-League club Churchill Brothers, before
taking up the coaching job with Ghana.

A widely travelled goalkeeper who kept posts in several countries in
Africa and Asia, Ansah, 47, joined the Churchill Brothers in the
2000-01 season and played for five years.

He fondly remembers his days in India and despite his hectic schedule
with the Ghanian team, Ansah has been following Indian football
closely.

"I feel the Indian team has done well under Bob Houghton," Ansah told IANS.

"But they haven't come across any tough opponents till now. In the
Asian Cup next year they are pitted against teams like Australia and
South Korea. And both the teams, especially South Korea, are of high
standards. India can only progress if they play regularly against such
teams," he says.

Asked if was willing to work with India, Ansah said: "Oh, that would
be great! But India have a good coach in Bob Houghton and my old
friend Marcus Pacheco is the goalkeeping coach. My heart still beats
for India."

Ansah, who is working alongside Serbian coach Milan Rajevac, says
working with Ghana's national team has come as a big opportunity.

"It was a great honour for me to be a part of the national team in the
World Cup. It was also a privilege to working with Rajevac. I have
learnt a lot from him and now I can look forward to more challenging
assignments," said Ansah.

He is happy that Ghana attained stardom this World Cup by reaching
their maiden World Cup quarterfinals. But there is a shade of
disappointment as they lost to Uruguay in the quarterfinals.

At the packed Soccer City in Johannesburg Saturday, Ghana went down to
Uruguay on penalties and lost a golden opportunity to become the first
African team to qualify for the semifinal.

"It was a shocking loss for us. But we had to blame ourselves for the
loss. The whole Soccer City was cheering for us. You can't win a match
if you miss three penalties. It was bad," Ansah says.

Ansah, however, feels that Ghana's success will help African football
in the long run.

"This was first World Cup in Africa and I am happy that the Black
Stars (Ghana) gave the whole of Africa something to cheer about. It
was a sight to watch when a united Africa was cheering for Ghana."

I never imagined that I would write a letter which compliments Rajan
P. Parrikar on issues Goan, for as opposed to his photography, which I
greatly admire, I am not exactly a fan of his political views which
generally veer towards the right.

But I think that this time, although no doubt his motivations are
fuelled by apparently anti-Christian sentiments, I agree with what
"Rajan P. Parrikar" parri...@yahoo.com> wrote with regard to the
proliferation of 'mega-projects' in South Goa: "why is the Church
missing in action? These are all predominantly Catholic villages over
which the Church has far more sway than any political party. So where
is the Church? The Archbishop spoke about our 'osmitai' a couple of
years ago at the Christmas gathering of invited politicos. Motley
village groups have been fighting the DLF, Rahejas and their ilk, and
are losing badly. Once again where is the Church in this fight between
its own and the rapacious builders?"

The Church, meaning the Church establishment led by Bamons starting
with Archbishop Felipe Neri Ferrao and his cohorts like the suave Fr
Loyola Pereira and Fr Jose Remedios are entirely and completely the
counterparts of the GSB stooges like Digu, who are in government to
milk this territory for whatever it is worth.

All these people are part and parcel of the elite, and they make their
living and the livings of their relatives and chamchas out of being
patted and petted and stroked by the Rahejas, the DLF, the Vedantas,
and what have you - and they care the a fig as to whether those who
are supposed to be their flock, or their constituency suffer as a
result of their acts of commission or omission.

Dear joegoauk

How could you possibly write an article about Allen Costa without
mentioning that other legend Imelda (Tavora) Dias. She is still
around, I believe, living in a very tasteful flat in Altinho. She must
be pretty old now, having been born in 1928 but I still say that the
trouble taken to visit her if her family allows it would be well worth
the trouble.

I had done an article about All India Radio a long time ago for Goa
Today when I met her and listened to her fascinating stories.

She wrote two books - 'How Long is Forever - An Autobiography of a
Woman Ahead of Her Times' and a collection of autobiographical short
stories - 'Shattered Lives'.

BTW - Should it not be Emissora de Goa and not Emissoro de Goa?

[Goanet] Celibacy Today

Priestly & Religious Celibacy: Is It Dead, or Should It Be?

by Benedict J.Groeschel, CFR

Few aspects of traditional Catholic practice have come under so much attack
in the past three decades as celibacy in the Latin Rite of the Catholic
Church. One might have thought that an era that prided itself on altruistic
causes would have found such a remarkable example of committed self-giving
to be admirable. But in fact, celibate priests, sisters, and brothers find
themselves being constantly analyzed, diagnosed, ridiculed, accused of
perversion, and betrayed, even by those who once were members of their own
ranks. That a discipline chosen by such a small segment of the population
(approximately .01%) could attract so much scrutiny is amazing.

Celibacy in Catholicism has always meant complete sexual abstinence. It
requires no great insight into human nature to realize that so rigorous a
discipline has never been and could never be completely successful. Some
writers like Richard Sipe, a former priest and critic of celibacy, make much
of this fact (4 Secret World, 1990). It is difficult to imagine how any
intelligent person could ever think a discipline as demanding as this one
could be totally successful. Have the Ten Commandments or the Beatitudes
been successful, or even the speed limit? In an important way they have been
successful since all three have significantly influenced human behavior for
the better, but it is perfectly obvious that they have been and will
continue to be violated many times. This is true of any discipline or law
that challenges human nature.

The Christian discipline of celibacy as a suggested practice and later as a
requirement for the clergy goes back at least to St. Paul (I Cor. 7:32-35).
Those who consider themselves followers of the Gospel might do well to
ponder what Christ means when he praises those who have made themselves
eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven (Mt. 19:12). Celibacy finds its roots in
the admonition of Christ to his disciples to leave everything, including
wives and children, to follow him (Mt. 19:26-29). The monastic tradition
brought mandatory celibacy into the Church, although the practice was much
older, and to this day is widespread in Hinduism and Buddhism. There are
even rare examples of monastic celibacy in Jewish and Islamic history.

A careful observance of celibacy by religious and diocesan priests has been
correlated with the vibrancy and fervor of the overall life of the Church.
Older people will remember that celibacy flourished along with a remarkably
vibrant Catholic community up to the early 1960s. When the Catholic
community began to falter and lose its identity, the observance of celibacy
was in trouble, and remains so to this day. Should any fair-minded person be
surprised at this when every other expression of morality in our culture,
especially in the family, is subject to widespread failure?

Those who for one reason or another feel they must announce the death of a
religious discipline as old as Buddhism and as widespread as Christianity
usually base their objections on arguments drawn from psychology, frequently
pop psychology. A brief summary of those who joyously sound the death knell
of celibacy might be helpful in answering the question posed by the title of
this article. The big objection to celibacy is that it is rooted in
pathology and usually represents either immaturity, repression, denial,
homosexuality, or masochism. In response one might observe that Freud and
his army of disciples said the same thing about human sexuality in general,
but added a few other elements unrelated to committed celibacy, among them
regression, narcissism, perversion, and sadism. One of my professors at
Columbia observed rather wisely that sexuality is usually the weakest link
in most people's suit of armor. Are there any so out of touch with reality
that they think America's public attitude toward sexuality today is anything
but regressed narcissism or even sado-masochism? Did you ever analyze the
attitude toward sexuality and family life presented by a single evening of
American television? That attitude would be enough to drive Boccaccio into
the Franciscans and Voltaire into the Jesuits.

Celibacy, traditionally and properly understood, requires sexual
abstinence — i.e., the avoidance of all voluntary genital pleasure and all
other behavior that is likely to lead to it. Celibacy also requires that
personal friendships be so organized that they do not lead into genital
expression, which obviously includes a lot of things that are not genital.
Since most human behavior has some defensive aspects to it, one should not
expect all celibates to be so perfectly balanced that they would not use a
little

Some Cashew nuts shops including Zantye’s were open
Some whole sale liquor shops and other ready made garment,
jewelry shops were open. So also Icecream parlours.
Vishal mega store was close around 6.30 but seen open after 7pm.
It also appears that many were with their shutters up around 7.30pm.
(I guess it was 8 bandh only).

All Pvt Buses were off the road but some KTC buses seen

Motor cycle Pilots were on so also Rickshawalas
Roads were as busy as usual with traffic except Pvt Buses.

Inox/Ashok Samrat multiplexes were on.
Infact we watched ‘I hate Luv stories’ 7.30pm show.
And hence the delay in transmitting this report
Movie got over at 10.15pm

[Goanet] World Cup already decided?

2010-07-05 Thread Gabe Menezes
This was sent to me

The world cup is already determined by the numbers

1. Brazil won the World Cup in 1994; before that they also won in 1970.
Adding 1970 + 1994= 3964

2. Argentina won its last World Cup in 1986; before that they also won in
1978. Adding 1978 + 1986= 3964

3. Germany won its last World Cup in 1990; before that they also won in
1974. Adding 1974 + 1990= 3964

4. Brazil also won the World Cup in 2002; before that they also won in 1962.
Adding 1962+ 2002= 3964

5. Therefore if you want to know what nation is going to win the World Cup
in 2010, you only have to subtract 2010 from the magic number that we have
determined: 3964.
3964 minus 2010 = 1954... In 1954 the World Cup was won by Germany!!!

Not at all scientific... but pretty interesting..
LETS WAIT & WATCH.

Left in the sweepstakes:-
GERMANY - Elora Lobo; Milan Kojnok
NETHERLANDS - Kurt Almeida; Maju/Glen Furtado
SPAIN - Loreen/Oscar d'Silva; Kurt Almeida
URUGUAY - Aidan Pinto; Acaria Almeida

Jail authorities pulled up for not producing Pacheco in court

Panaji, July 5 (IANS) A court here Monday lambasted the jail
authorities for not bringing before it Goa’s former tourism minister
Mickky Pacheco, currently hospitalised after he was sent to judicial
custody over the mysterious death of his alleged lover.
Additional Sessions Judge P.Kamat asked the jail officials present to
explain both why the minister had not been produced for the hearing
pre-scheduled for Monday or why the jail authorities had not been able
to furnish an official report of the health of the former minister.

Pacheco was first admitted for chest pain and hypertension and was
then “diagnosed” with jaundice by the doctors of the Hospicio
government hospital located in Margao, 35 kms from here.

Pacheco had surrendered before a court in Margao Saturday after being
on the run for nearly a month.

The Supreme Court had already rejected the former minister’s plea for
anticipatory bail last Thursday.

Pacheco and his aide Lyndon Monteiro face charges of culpable homicide
over Nadia Torrero’s death in Chennai May 30. Nadia died after
consuming rat poison following an apparent row with Pacheco.

The former minister went underground after being grilled by the Crime
Branch for over nine hours June 4.

[Goanet] Charges framed against Goa politician in Russian rape case

2010-07-05 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
A court here today framed charges against John Fernandes, a local
politician accused of raping a 25-year-old Russian woman.

Sessions court Judge B P Deshpande framed charges under section 376
and 201 of IPC which deals with rape and destruction of evidence
respectively.

Fernandes was arrested for allegedly raping a Russian girl, whom he
had met at a shack in Colva beach, in his car after spiking her drinks
on December 1, 2009.

The South Goa based politician was on the run after being accused of
rape by the victim.

An attempt to rape case was initially registered at Colva police
station but the case was later handed over to the Crime Branch, which
registered a rape case after taking a fresh statement from the victim,
who was working in a five star resort.

After a month-long hiding, John surrendered on January 6 after his
anticipatory bail by District and Sessions court, which was later set
aside by Panaji Bench of Bombay High Court.

Police have also claimed that John destroyed crucial evidence in this
case by washing his car and deposing wrong clothes to the Crime
branch.

[Goanet] Swindon Goan Festival (Request to Swindon/UK Goans)

2010-07-05 Thread Arwin Mesquita
Dear Goans,

With regards to the Swindon Goan Festival, I request a polite signature
campaign for Goa be done and be given to MLA Francisco Silveira (who the
organizers have invited); copies to the Chief Minister and if possible, to
other ministers as well.

I understand that Swindon has a sizeable Goan Community and have even seen a
BBC Documentary on the same. This action can send a strong message to our
Politicians that we cannot see our state/identity being destroyed and that
we need our Politicians need to act immediately.

The UAE Goans have already sent a signature campaign but we cannot do it
alone; I hope we all appreciate that if we lose Goa, all Goans including
that Overseas in Swindon, UAE and elsewhere will be irrelevant.

I had the opportunity of meeting Allen Costa at AIR a few years before he
retired on some occassions that our village choir went for recordings along

Talk of AIR and I can hear the voice of Allen Costa reverbrate. Another voice I
greatly loved to listen to was that of Imelda.
Such voices will be rare in future with hardly any attention being given to
voice training in schools today.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 15th Sunday of the Year

2010-07-05 Thread Jude Botelho
04-Jul-2010

Dear Friend,

It is said that some people look at life only from their own point of view.
Others make an effort to look at life from the point of view of others. Still
others prefer not to look at life at all! They prefer to be passers by –
bypassing life! Everyone looks for happiness and for the possibility of leading
a full life. Yet fullness of life eludes most because they are closed up in
their puny self-centred existence instead of being open to others who can be
the
source of happiness and fulfilment. In focusing and finding God in others we
can
find our selves. Have an enriching weekend discovering God in others! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: 15th Sunday of the year ‘Love God and find him your
neighbour!  11-July 2010
Deuteronomy 30: 10-14                    Colossians 1: 15-20
Luke 10: 25-37

The first reading from the Book of Deuteronomy speaks of keeping the Law of God
and observing his commandments always. It also tells us that keeping the law is
not difficult though challenging. We might object that we do not know the law
so
how can we observe it? To which the author replies that the law is always close
to us and ever accessible. The law is not something distant or foreign to us.
God’s law is as near as his word to us. For those who love God his word is in
their hearts and speaks to us in the depth of our heart. The lover is never
distant from the beloved. The greatest Law is the law of love.

Push
A man was sleeping one night in his cabin when the Savior appeared and showed
him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to
push against the rock with all his might. This the man did, day after day for
many years, pushing it with all his might. Each night the man returned to his
cabin sore and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain. He
decided to take his thoughts to the Lord. "Lord" he said, "I have laboured long
and hard putting all my strength to do which you have asked. Yet, after all
this
time, I have not even been able to budge that rock. Why am I failing?" The Lord
responded compassionately, "My friend, When I asked you to serve me I told you
that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength, which you
have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your
task was to push. And now you come to me thinking that you have failed. But, is
that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back
sinewy and brown, your hands are calloused from constant pressure, and your
legs
have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much and your
abilities now surpass that which you used to have. Yet you haven't moved the
rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your
faith
and trust in my wisdom. This you have done." At times, when we hear a word from
God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what he wants, when actually
what God wants is simple obedience and Faith in him...
Inspirational Stories from the Net

In today’s gospel we have a young man who comes to Jesus asking him what he
should do in order to inherit the kingdom of God. Jesus responds with a
question: What is the answer given by the Law? Jesus implies that if we search
we will find the answer to all our queries in God’s Law. If we want to be happy
“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your strength,
and with all your mind and your neighbour as yourself.” But the man was not
satisfied, he wanted still further clarification from Jesus and so he asked:
Who
is my neighbour? He knew that the law demanded that he should love God and that
this love should be seen in one’s attitude to one’s neighbour. But what did
loving one’s neighbour imply? In answer Jesus told the parable of the Good
Samaritan. There is the victim who is attacked, robbed and left wounded by the
roadside. Two people, both noted for the observance of the law, came upon the
wounded man but passed by. Perhaps they wondered whether they were bound to
help
by the demands of the law. But they thought otherwise and went their way. The
Samaritan, on the other hand, on finding the stranger lying on the roadside did
not stop to consider whether it was his duty or not but was moved by compassion
to reach out and help the stranger. He went out of his way and carried him to a
place of safety and care unmindful of the inconvenience caused. He did not
think
of the consequences for himself but of the predicament of the wounded person.
The focus of the life of the first two persons was themselves. They looked at
life from their own selfish perspective. Their life rotated around themselves.
The Samaritan, on the other hand looked at life from the perspective of the
other person and his need rather than his own. His heart and his love changed
his view of the situation. Jesus in so many words, through this parable

Writing for kids: report of a children's writers workshop
with Sandhya Rao
Organized by Bookworm, Panaji, Goa

Anita Pinto
anitapinto@gmail.com

I attended the workshop 'Writing for Children' organized by
Bookworm on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at XCHR, the Xavier
Centre for Historical Research, Porvorim. I have always been
impressed by Tulika Publishers' multi lingual books and was
happy to meet editor Sandhya Rao who was the resource person.

The workshop was from 10 am to 4.30pm but the hours just
flew. All the participants, 13 of them, were women and,
except for me, all were young mothers who knew all about what
young children want to read today and how much they can
handle.

Sandhya was an excellent resource person. It was a "Let's
chat" kind of workshop. Besides certain exercises in writing,
she also shared her experiences as writer and editor.

One exercise that she gave was for all to have a look at
Angelo Fonseca's paintings which were on display in a room
there and write anything that came to mind on any painting.

The painting I selected was very real. It was a
room with an old piano with a frayed cushion, tea
set on a table, pipe on the bed, pictures askew on
the wall etc.Typical of an old person's room in
Goa. We were given a time limit. This is what I
  wrote:

Brother and Sister

"Ha! A pipe on the bed, Tea set for two. Leslie! Leslie!

Are we having company?

Did you remember?

Did you remember?"

"Did I remember what, Eileen?"

"I don't remember Leslie. I don't remember what you should
remember. Do you think that this cushion looks frayed Leslie?
How long have we had it?"

"From the time Mama was a little girl. Where's my pipe
Eileen? Have you seen my pipe?"

"Pipe? Are you smoking now? I'll tell Mama about you, Leslie"

"Mama's been gone 40 years now Eileen."

"Gone? Where has she gone?"

"She died, Eileen"

"Oh, yes, yes and Matthew and Anne and Papa also died. I
know. Why are we talking about death Leslie? Am I going to
die?"

"No, Eileen, I mean Yes; I guess we will both die. We're old
aren't we?"

"Yes, Leslie. But we had fun times didn't we? When Anne
played the piano and our friends came over and we sang and
danced?"

And don't forget you drank and smoked too Eileen!"

"I did, didn't I? But it was fun."

"It was Eileen."

And you fell in love with Anne. You couldn't take your eyes
off her... or your hands!"

"You're a great one to talk Eileen... dancing cheek to cheek
with Matthew when you were barely sixteen!"

"What's this pipe on the bed Leslie? Are you smoking? Tea
set on the table? Are we having company Leslie?"

Anita Pinto

The last exercise was to copy the style of Tulika Thum Thum
Books using incidents from our own lives. Sandhya promised
that if it met with the simple 9 or 11 page, bi-lingual
format and style, Tulika would publish it.

Sujata and Elaine of Bookworm were excellent hosts. The
workshop was very well organized and there was so much of
interaction that Sujata asked if we were willing to meet
again. There was a unanimous 'Yes'.

Thanks to all the organizers.

[Goanet] Goa-llll... football fever fights the rains in Goa (FN)

2010-07-05 Thread Goanet Reader
GOA-... FOOTBALL FEVER FIGHTS THE RAINS IN GOA

Frederick Noronha
f...@goa-india.org

On a rainswept night, as the wind howls outside and heavy
drops clatter on the tall roof, football fans sit glued to a
giant TV screen at the Clube Gaspar Dias, a club at Miramar
beach on the outskirts of Goa's state-capital Panaji.

Football is big sport, and big business, in Goa. In recent
years, India's smallest State has seen itself propelled to
the top of national football achievement, even while fans
here aren't quite sure how that all happened.

Cashing in on the football cup fever, a host of clubs,
restaurants and commercial firms are offering a wide range of
entertainment and products to fans who emerge bleary-eyed
with the late-night hours of the World Cup 2010.

"It all depends on who's playing whom," says Frankie Gracias,
part of the team helping the Clube Gaspar Dias event. Goan
fans are known to support Portugal, sometimes seen an
embarassingly politically incorrect choice given the long
colonial connections with this region (which ended amidst
bitterness in 1961 and started exactly five hundred years
ago, in 1510).

Others are known to be big time supporters of Brazil, or
other Latin-influenced teams, either from Iberian Europe or
Latin America.

"There is so much of promise these days. We are the
  under-21 champions, under-19 I-League champions,
National champions and, most importantly, Goan
clubs secured the top two spots in the I-League,
India's premier and richest club competition,"
gushes sports journalist Marcus Mergulhao. In his
30s, Mergulhao's career curve has paralleled the
efficient growth of Goan football in recent years.

UNDERSTANDING GOAN FOOTBALL

Like its cuisine, Goa owes the football flavour of its sports
to its erstwhile rulers and now a global football powerhouse
-- Portugal -- during whose rule this discipline was
introduced over a century ago. The State boasts of an
organized league that is decades old, which manages to pull
crowds, including a few Euro tourists at times!

Goa's main football stadia or grounds are at Fatorda
(Margao), Tilak Maidan (Vasco), and the Duler Stadium
(Mapusa). This sports grows here despite its politicians,
not because of them; some have drawn flak for plans to build
concrete monstrosities and real estate projects in the guise
of giving locals "sports stadiums" or "sport cities".

Others like Arunava Chaudhuri, the Germany-based till
recently editor-in-chief of IndianFootball.Com website (not
active for a few months), agree about the power of Goan
football, not even out of State loyalty.

Chaudhuri, who blogs about football at arunfoot.blogspot.com,
sees Goan football has having "come a long way over the last
few years." This is true especially with the club scene
having moved ahead with Dempo SC and Churchill Brothers SC
topping the I-League in the last three years, he notes.

"Goa is at the forefront of youth development with the Goa
Football Association putting a system in place which is
showing results. But infrastructure remains a problem. The
GFA with the clubs need to develop further grounds. Getting
the land for the expansion of the Duler ground in Mapusa is
only a first step," suggests Chaudhuri, via an e-interview.

What does he credit for the rise of football here?

"Authorities in Goa have worked together to develop football.
In the last few years the GFA secretary Savio Messias
especially has been at the forefront of development and
getting things done, though has been opposition and problems.
Dempo under the able leadership of coach and secretary
Armando Colaco has become the currently most successful club
in India. Four titles in six years are a clear sign of the
shape of things," says Chaudhuri.

Peter Vaz, president of the Sporting Clube de Goa, is clear
about the reason for Goa's run of luck in wins. "Our
association is very active. The GFA is probably the best
association entire country. Second reason, is the Goans'
passion for football. We conduct 700-800 matches every year,
right from inter-school level upwards. We have so many
coaches, referees, football academies. Our emphasis is on
youngsters, and we hold so many camps. Youth developed
efforts are bearing fruit."

But, as Vaz points out, football is facing competition in
Goa. On the one hand, there are other sports, and other
distractions too. "Goa is growing as a tourism destination,
which is not encouraging young people to take up sports.
Still football is doing well," he notes.

But there's a rider: football starts don't seem to
be emerging from coastal (and tourism prone)
villages nowadays as they once did. "Earlier champs
came from villages like Benaulim, Colva and
Calangute. Not now. Now they come from hinterland
(and non-touristy) villages like Nuvem, Raia,
Chinchinim, Curtorim, Tivim or Guirim," says Vaz,

As a student of Panaji's Massano de Amorim Govt. Marathi primary school I
was a child artist in the popular Khalar and malar' programme on AIR-Panaji.
I remember Allen costa on AIR and can't forget his voice emanating from our
Radio with nice wooden cabinet. I bumped into Allen later on AIR while
presenting talks, features and participating in Yuvavani programmes and
compering the same. AIR stopped sending contracts to me after 1999, full 33
years after my voice was aired as a kid.
We also had a similar National Radio set which needed four large dry cells.
I miss all the old voices from AIR. Allen's was most distinct and had a fine
timbre. I feel it still ricochets in the cavern of my conscience. Life has
become multichromatic and polyphonic if not cacophonic... those who still
remember jovial personalities like Allen are doing a great service to the
legacy of Goa's entertainment culture in the age of innocence which we have
really lost...I still listen to songs from "Amchem noxib" and wonder where
we have reached today?. What have we gained and what have we lost?
But Allen is not there to entertain us
My generation is ever grateful to him

Does the mother suddenly regain control over the child upon travel to Goa?

[Goanet] Two years on

To Goanet -

My documentary "The Rape of Goa" was released two years ago.
See -

http://www.parrikar.com/blog/the-rape-of-goa

Time for a status check.

Virtually all the unfinished construction projects shown in the documentary
(and many, many others not shown but for which I have photographic
evidence) are now complete. Admin Frederick Noronha and his wife
Pamela D'Mello would have you believe it is all a mirage, an illusion
wrought by my telephoto lens. You can take a drive around parts of Goa
and see for yourself (you could start in Taleigao). Then decide whether
you want to believe Admin Noronha or your own lying eyes.

While the old projects are now done, a flood of new projects have
since taken off the ground. Thousands of apartments are coming up
in hitherto pristine villages. And it ain't Goans who are going to be
living in them. The overwhelming new owners of all these new
ratholes will be outsiders - Indians fleeing the sewers their
own stinking towns have turned into.

A stroll around Panjim reveals that old heritage buildings are now
the new targets and have been demolished or marked for demolition, to
be replaced with concrete towers.

In Dec 2006, it was the Church that mobilized people to turn up
in large numbers at the Azad Maidan GBA rally and the one subsequently
in Margao. (Dr. Oscar Rebello's conceit lead him to imagine that
it was his own charm that had attracted the throngs.) Now that so many
of the Salcette villages are in mortal danger of being despoiled
(Carmona, Cansaulim et al), why is the Church missing in action?
These are all predominantly Catholic villages over which the Church
has far more sway than any political party. So where is the Church?
The Archbishop spoke about our 'osmitai' a couple of years ago at the
Christmas gathering of invited politicos. Motley village groups have
been fighting the DLF, Rahejas and their ilk, and are losing badly.
Once again where is the Church in this fight between its own and
the rapacious builders?

vertical streams of water and assume a different ecospiritual, transcendent
personality….monsoon in Goa needs an epic, but I have neither time , nor

Poemoods:05

July rains: trivisions

:Rhythm:

Drip tip leaves,

Sound of raindrops,

Falling on the litter,

Wet and decaying,

Aromatic,

Aesthetic,

Apurbayeche!

July rains

Have a different rhythm,

Rain covers the landscape

In soft flimsy vertical sheets,

Quivering, touching so gently,

The tentative kiss of the earth,

The parting of the

Curtain of clouds

The explosion of light

The cold passing drops,

Falling scattered, indecisively

In slow motion,

July rains can be silent,

Like a lost Lama,

In the shangrila of clouds!

:Smell:

The first rains are cleansing type,

The rains of June,

The first rains inseminate,

The first rain drops,

The semen of the skies,

For Shakambari earth!

The goddess of vegetation,

July rains are healing type,

Smell the vegetation,

Listen to the birdsongs,

Look at the celebration

Of liquid joy,

July rains are nostalgic,

They loosen the grave soils,

They touch the bare bodies,

Living and dead,

Naked and clad,

July rains discharge,

The blessed holy water

July rains release,

A bouquet of perfumes,

Diversity of smells,

Filling the damp nostrils,

Waking up something inside,

Very deep, alien,

Evolutionary memories,

Oh dear,

How much we have walked from,

The plains of dark continent,

To arrive somewhere,

To be humans,

To be sensitive, sensitized,

July rains release

Archaic smells,

Of earths bygone,

July rains signal,

There is more to come,

Monsoon climax,

Floods of the greens,

Eye soothing orgies

Of cholorophyllous biomass,

July rains-are July rains

With character, identity, a personality

Soul solubilizing!

Bilkul divine, InshallaH….

: Touch:

The contact of this water is different,

Cold, silvery, molten,

On bare arms, skin

July rains communicate

In a liquid script,

Pure affection,

Affiliation to life,

More solid, strong, erect, unbending!

July rains…

July rains…

Goencho pavas!

[Goanet] The Germans Are Coming

2010-07-05 Thread Freddy Fernandes
The Germans Are Coming

If we go through the history and the heaps of movies, of the world wars and
there is just one sentence that sent shivers down the spines of Europeans at the
start of both the world wars, "The Germans are coming". This one sentence would
send the entire neighbourhood scampering for cover though no cover would be
enough to save them. The whole of Europe dreaded the very idea of coming face to
face with the Germans and nearly eight decades later history is repeating
itself, this time not on the war front but on the football field. World cup
2010, has certainly brought back those memories to life.

Germany's 4-1 bombardment of the Australians in their very first match, gave us
enough clues of what was to come but, even then we did not give them much of a
chance, then some erroneous decisions by the referee stole the charm of their
match against Slovakia which they lost 0-1, then the sheer determination and
then speed of the "Black Pearls" who really fought bravely, but in end, had to
come second best with 0-1 defeat. At this point most people were of 50/50
opinion for their match against the highly overrated Englishmen but, on that
fateful day Germany were completely a different team from their previous two
matches. The Germans let the English know that stars alone do not make a winning
combination and taught them a lesson or two on the basics of football in their
4-1 trashing of the Englishmen. With the demolition of their highly overrated
European rivals England, they sent a message across the football world that
their best was yet to come.

As sure as day follows night, it happened in the next game against Argentina,
till that round the Argentineans had not lost a single match and had comfortably
won all their group matches and then they met Mexico where again some dubious
decisions by the referee against the Mexicans served the match on a platter to
Argentina for a 3-1 win. By now speculations were the order of the day and
though a lot of people thought the match could go either way with a minimum of
goal difference, but what unfolded shocked the entire football world where the
Germans ripped the mighty Argentineans to shreds, so much so that the best
player in world football today, Messi was a mere spectator and the hard working
Tevez looked like a wounded bull running into brick walls of the German defense.
The Germans over ran Argentina 4-0 and I am sure the Spaniards must have heard
the cry "The Germans are coming"

As I analyzed the match I just could not hide my awe at the turn in German
football. I have been a football fan from the time I was a small kid, and as I
played for my school we were shown a lot of the old world football classic, I
always enjoyed the south Americans and even the Hungarians but hated the long
passes followed by the looping crosses which were mostly converted into goals by
the Germans, they use to be very physical too, to tell the truth even now I
never like watching Bundesliga matches, but this world cup has changed it all,
and I am sure the long term thinking of the Germans to pick a very young team
has changed the face of German football. Due credit must be given to Joachim Low
for providing us with some fantastic football.

On the other hand the woes of the eccentric Maradona will continue, watching his
team being trashed, he just did not have a clue, what to do next, this is what
happens when a coach has just one plan. Maradona did not have any plan B or plan
C, his one and only plan was Messi nothing more and nothing less, is cases like
this the true credibility of the coaches come to the fore and I am sorry to say
that Maradona may have been a genius on the field, the best ever human being to
play football but as a coach he lacked basic coaching qualities. We all saw what
Jose Mourinho did with ten men to the ferociously talented Barcelona team in the
semi finals of the Champions League Cup, that is what coaches should be, all
well planned and exquisitely executed.

Now with just three matches to go in this 2010 world cup, the winds of
speculation have changed and I can clearly say that there can be only one
champion, the Germans have come and come to stay at the end I will say well done
Germany, I am made to eat my words that German football was boring and "Danke
Deutschland für das Spielen des aufregenden Fußballs" (thank you Germany for
playing exciting football) Hope you'll play even better and win the world cup -
Alles beste (all the best).

Jealousy is a canker that consumes man.
All restlessness and fighting between one

All India Radio Panjim (Akashvanni Ponnje)
Radio was the only indoor means of entertainment for us.
There were no TVs, VCR/DVDs, MP3, Cable/SkyTVs, walkmen etc
There was a time whenever there was a 'Lokam Khell' (Folk Play)
(usually at 9.10pm till 10pm on Saturdays or Sundays)
we shouted calling every one saying..
Agnel, Francis, Camilo..yo re Khell eilo
Consu, Jillit, Kerbin yo go, khell eilo..
(we call every one by names to announce the play is about to start
or just started) as not all households had Radio with them.
Our father being 'Tarvotti' we had one large 4 band
National Panasonic Radio that worked on 4 large batteries
There was no electricty either at that time (Our village had it around 1975)

Subject: Project stays as Cansaulim VP refuses to stop work

Dear all,

The Cansaulim villagers continue to be given the run-around by their
Sarpanch Jose Manuel Fernandes and some of the Panch members including
that notorious old-time shrew Martha Saldanha. She along with rowdies
and the builder’s hench-men have even sought to pressurise the poor
villagers of Cansaulim and silence their legitimate wishes expressed
through the Gram Sabha. Some of these members of the Cansaulim
Panchayat want to allow this project to continue even though there are
serious irregularities and want to see it go through by hook or by
crook, as they have already received their share of the booty.
Likewise Mauvin Godinho who happens to be a grandson of the village is
backing the builder Aboobakr Sheikh and warned the villagers not to
oppose “this development of the village.” These representatives who
should be promoting the interests of the Cansaulim villagers are
traitors and have their own hidden agenda and are in collusion with
the builder.

The Sarpanch Jose Manuel Fernandes who now expresses helplessness
saying that the Panch members are against stopping the work revoking
the construction license issued to a certain Aboobakr Sheikh alias
Babloo who has suddenly portrayed himself as a builder out of nowhere
and is carrying out this project named as the Gonsalves Dias Gates
Project of over 66 flats with a swimming pool, community hall (no one
clearly knows whether it is a mosque or an entertainment hall) in the
heart of Cansaulim village. This particular project will destroy the
traditional character, idyllic greenery and pristine verdancy of the
heart of Cansaulim village changing it overnight into a concrete
jungle.

Vested parties who stand to gain including the Sarpanch and certain
Panch members are trying to pressurize the Cansaulim villagers and
silence them and push projects like these through the back door
without any concern about the damage it will do this beautiful
village.

If the Cansaulim Sarpanch and the Panchayat members are not ready to
follow the law then it’s high time for the Directorate of Panchayats
to sack them.

Please voice your support and all Goans need to speak out against
this as all our Goan villages face the same problems on account of the
close nexus between the builders, Panchayats, corrupt officials in the
TCP and of course our greedy and corrupt politicians.
The Goan villagers who have lived here for generations in these
villages going back in time should be the ones to decide what kind of
development they want and preserve the coastal ecology which is so
important - otherwise what we are seeing in terms of weather changes,
soil erosion, tsunamis, floodings which were never heard of will be
the order of the day.

Consolidated efforts to rally and support the villagers so that no
project is passed through without checking the damages to this
delicate coastal ecology. We should all join hands to support what
essentially is the heart of Goa –it’s villages, it’s people and their
Goan way of life that will be destroyed due to the unending greed of a
few traitors in our midst.

Project stays as Cansaulim VP refuses to stop work

MARGAO: In what appears to be a blatant disregard for the authorities,
the village panchayat of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim, at its meeting held
on Friday, decided against issuing a stop work order to a mega project
in Cansaulim. This is despite the town and country planning department
pointing out that the construction licence for the project was
obtained on the basis of an inaccurately drawn site plan.

Sarpanch Jose Manuel Fernandes, when contacted, confirmed that most of
the panchayat members voiced their opinion against issuing any stop
work order or revoking the construction licence. He admitted that the
decision was against the suggestion given by the TCP. "I really don't
know what to do now," Fernandes expressed his helplessness, when TOI
contacted him.

At the gram sabha of the Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim panchayat held last
month, the villagers had unanimously adopted a resolution demanding
that the construction licence granted to the mega project by the
panchayat be revoked. This was because the builder had failed to
submit a revised plan of the project as suggested by the TCP after it
observed several discrepancies in the original plan, locals said.

The TCP, in its letter to the panchayat dated May 6 had pointed out
that the traditional access passing through the property was not shown
in the plan and that no approval was taken from the water resources
department for the construction of a well by the builder. "You are
therefore requested to direct the applicant to submit the revised site
plan showing the existing traditional access passing thro

Sao Jose de Areal villagers have taken a major step forward for Goa. They
have demanded at the Gram Sabha hastily convened with a single day's notice,
that the election authorities must verify whether migrants whose names have
been included in the electoral rolls have been registered after verifying
their transfer certificates.

The members have lodged their strong objection to migrants being registered
in the electoral rolls. They have sought three months time to study the
electoral roll themselves and find out which migrants brought transfer
certificates from their native states. The gram sabha has determined that it
will not allow the registering of migrants without the transfer certificates
from their native states.

Thanks to the vigilance of the villagers of Sao Jose de Areal, other
villages can follow suit and demand to see if the migrant registered in the
electoral rolls have submitted transfer certificates or not. All that is
needed is to apply to the Election Commission Goa under Right to
Information.

[Goanet] Charisma – monday muse (5 July ’10)

2010-07-05 Thread Pravin Sabnis

MONDAY MUSE (5 July 2010)

CHARISMA

All of us are influenced and impressed by charismatic people. All of us seek to
be owners of charisma that can influence and impress others. It is a special
quality of impact personalities whose principles, purposes and powers
differentiate them from others. To be called charismatic is considered a
valuable compliment!

Many of us believe that charisma is a trait that cannot be developed since it
appears to be a deep-rooted personality characteristic. But, it is pertinent to
note that it is a quality that can be acquired and learnt. For example, being
enthusiastic and emotionally expressive is a major ingredient for dishing out
charisma – and surely, it is possible to learn to become emotionally expressive.

Look around at people whom you find charismatic. You will notice that they
smile easily and seem constantly enthused. Notice that their ever eager energy
is very visible. And this is so because they do not hold back their actual
feelings. The best method to develop charisma is to be better at expressing our
feelings more assertively, openly and freely.

More importantly, charisma is about transference. Others must validate our
charisma. And they will do so, only if it impacts them positively. The way to
acquire charisma, according to Dan Reiland is, ‘Be more concerned about making
others feel good about themselves than you are making them feel good about you.’

let’s BE BETTER at charismatic effectiveness,
by discovering our emotional expressiveness!

[Goanet] No jokes with Gram Sabha in Goa

2010-07-05 Thread soter

The civil servants have been treating the Gram Sabhas in a casual manner all
these years. Now that the people know their rights these babus cannot take
matters easy. Last sunday at one of the Extra-ordinary Gram Sabha meetings
convened across Goa to update the electoral rolls, the Sao Jose de Areal Gram
Sabha showed the election commission staff their rightful place and gave them a
lesson or two on procedures to be followed at a Gram Sabha meeting. The
election staff had taken over the dais and tried to call the extraordinary Gram
Sabha meeting to order. Alert Gram Sabha members immediately intervened and
told the election staff to get off the dais as it is the Sarpanch's duty to
chair the Gram Sabha meetings. It was for the Sarpanch to invite them later on
after explaining to the public. They also pointed out that it was not correct
for the election staff to take signatures and note the minutes on their book.
The Gram Sabha demanded that the minutes be recorded in the official minutes
book of the Village panchayat since it is an Extraordinary Gram Sabha. The
embarassed election staff on seeing the public outrage relented to the demand
by vacating the dais while the Sarpanch took the chair.
As soon as the meeting was called to order the members pointed out that the
requirement of four days notice for convening an extra-ordinary Gram Sabha
meeting was not followed. The sarpanch tried to explain that there was a
circular from the Director of Panchayats to convene the meeting which reached
them on 30th June 2010 and accordingly the notice was issued. Gram Sabha
members read out the rule and pointed out that there can be no concession for
anyone to break the rules which are laid down. Then the members pointed out

This talk will centre on three Goan short-story writers from the 1960s: Vimala
Devi, Maria Elsa da Rocha and Epitácio Pais. As well as analysing the themes,
styles and concerns of these authors, Dr Melo e Castro will attempt to locate
their work in relation to Lusophone Goan writing and describe some of the
challenges this body of literature presents to post-colonial literary studies
in general. The material covered in this talk is drawn from a wider project
focusing on twentieth-century Portuguese-language short stories from Goa. In
his discussion of the three writers in question, he will touch upon some of the
theoretical difficulties he has faced so far concerning issues of
representation, canon formation and comparison in literarystudies.

Dr. Paul Melo e Castro is Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of
Portuguese, Spanish and Latin-American Studies at the University of Leeds in
England. His research interests include post-colonial writing from the actual
and former Lusophone world. Current and forthcoming publications on Goan themes
include: '"E eu, que não conhecia nada": 'Vimala Devi's Monção: The Last
Snapshots of Colonial Goa', The Representation of Today's Goa in Catarina
Mourão's A Dama de Chandor (1998)' and 'Of Prison Walls and Barroom Brawls:

[Goanet] KKK PRESIDENT ELVINO RODRIGUES SAYS "ADEUS"

2010-07-05 Thread Jose Pereira
KKK PRESIDENT ELVINO RODRIGUES SAYS "ADEUS" TO KUWAIT.
“ If I get two Kuwait based Konknnivadis here in Goa with me to fight for the
cause of Konkani, I will surely get our goal realized within a short time”,
stated once in early eighties by Dr. Rebello from Maddel, Margao and a big man
of Novem Goem Pratishthan and Novem Goem Daily. The two Konknnivaids he
referred to were me and Elvino Rodrigues from Navelim, Mandopa, Salcette, Goa.
After working for about 4 decades in Kuwait first for Bahar Shipping and later
on shifting to Alghanims, last month Goa lover and Konkani promoter Elvino
Rodrigues finally said “Adeus” to Kuwait and left for Goa for good along with
his equally Goa lover wife also from Navelim who always strongly stood by her
husband when he was fighting and working for the social, Goan and Konkani
causes.

Seen in the picture above are Elvino Rodrigues and his wife Annie.

After our success in organising Novem Goem movement in Kuwait for the
establishment of Novem Goem Konkani Daily in Goa, I by chance met Elvino
Rodrigues in Kuwait when I noticed in him great love for Konkani, Goa and Goan
causes. I wanted to establish a Konkani promotion organization in Kuwait and
for this purpose I wanted intellectually advanced Konkani promoters. With the
help of Elvino, 26 years back we selected best of Konkani lovers in Kuwait and
established Kuwait Konknni Kendr a permanent Konkani Body in Kuwait which still
survives with dignity and without any scandal. To form such a reputed and
dignified Goan organisaiton I needed colleagues of very high reputation
characterwise, disciplinewise, reputationwise, educationwise, moralitywise,
intellectuals and above all having total love for Konkani and Goa. Many of them
are no more in Kuwait now, they are already retired from Kuwait and now
residing in Goa, one died in Goa and the remaining few are
still standing by KKK not for fame and self promotion but to serve the cause
even by undergoing personal sacrifices spending their own time and own personal
money; they are Luis Cardoso from Gurim Bardez, Mario Rebello from Panjim,
Rosary Ferns from Colva and myself.

Seen in the picture is Elvino Rodrigues delivering his speech.

Kuwait Konknni Kendr has done wonderful job for the cause of Konkani. It helped
financially Novem Goem, Konkani Martys Fund, Funded Mando Festivals in Goa,
Funded Konkani promotion Organisations in Goa and even in Mangalore, Funded
printing of Konkani Books and many other activities in support of Konkani.
While in Kuwait, Kuwait Konknni Kendr established Mando culture by organising
Mando Festivals and Mando competitions; organising of Konkani cultural function
and as a matter of unique distinction, KKK inducted first time in Kuwait
Konkani functions in Five Star Hotels and thereby raised the credibility and
status of Konkani in Kuwait. Not only that, KKK first time in the history of
Kuwait Goans organized Konkani cultural programme in Five Star Hotel Meridien
for Goa and Konkani lovers Free of Charge. Additionally, KKK has done lot of
other activities in Kuwait and thru these activities silenced the critics of
Konkani who many times abused Konkani
promoters as “Illiterates” and “backward”. KKK proved every critic wrong.
Elvino Rodrigues and we all others proved to everyone that Konkani in Kuwait is
not in the hands of illiterate ignorants but educated intellectuals. In all our
Konkani promotions and activities under KKK, Elvino Rodrigues played a very
pivotal role first as a General Secretary and later on as President which post
he was holding till his leaving Kuwait. In fact, among all the presidents of
Goan Organisations in Kuwait, Elvino Rodrigues stands on top being highly
intellectual and for having done great service for Konkani. His participation
in Konkani and Goan causes from Kuwait was not to contest Panchayat or Assembly
elections in Goa by gaining cheap publicity but purely for the love of Konkani
and Goa.
Seen above is Sheila Rebello - wife of Mario Rebello presenting a Memento on
behalf of Kuwait Konknni Kendr to Elvino Rodrigues.

One of the factors required for KKK members is to be of good character,
especially morally. Elvino with his best character maintained the required
discipline, so too the other members – in fact KKK is the only organisaiton in
Kuwait whose members are known to spend their own personal money for the cause
of Konkani without making a show of this; Elvino also spent lot of his personal
money silently without making any show or noise for the cause of Konkani. He
was a strong silent social worker as well. Such silent social workers are not
existing now among us, Elvino is an exception. He was a pride of Goans in
Kuwait, so also of Navelim and I dont think Navelkars in Kuwait will have
another Elvino in their midst.

Seen in middle is Elvino Rodrigues with his wife and Mario Rebello's wife.

[Goanet] Bail or Jail will be known today

2010-07-05 Thread Mauricio Pereira

The fate of former tourism minister Mickky Pacheco will be decided on Monday as
the Sessions Court will hear his bail plea as well as the application moved by
the Crime Branch to seek his police custody.
With the Sessions Court rejecting his plea for interim bail on Saturday, the
former minister will be hoping that the court grant him bail after arguments
scheduled on Monday.
Both the applications for bail and police custody will come up for hearing
before Additional Sessions Judge P V Kamat on Monday noon.
As things stand today, Pacheco’s plea for interim bail had failed to find
favour with the Sessions Court on Saturday. While rejecting the plea for
interim bail, Judge Kamat had made it amply clear there are no intervening and
compelling circumstances for the grant of interim relief.
The Crime Branch had moved the Sessions Court on Saturday to seek Pacheco’s
police custody after he surrendered before the court in the morning. Public
Prosecutor Sarojini Sardinha exuded confidence that the court would hand
custody of the former minister to the Crime Branch for detailed interrogations
into the death of Nadia Torrado.
Sardinha reminded that the Sessions Court, High Court as well as the Supreme
Court had all rejected the anticipatory bail applications filed by Pacheco on
grounds that he is required for custodial interrogation in connection with the
case.
Sources in the Crime Branch informed that the investigating agency will
vehemently oppose Pacheco’s bail application and will place all facts and
reports before the court for his police custody.
On the other hand, the former tourism minister will press for his bail on
grounds that no case is made out against him in the Torrado case. In fact,
senior legal counsel representing Pacheco, Adv Surendra Desai had argued that
none of the charges under Sections 304, 306, 309 and 201 of the IPC are
attracted in the case of the former minister.
Adv Desai had maintained Section 304 of the IPC for culpable homicide not
amounting to murder as well as abetment to commit suicide is not applicable to
Pacheco as he is no way connected with her death.

[Goanet] MICKY MANAGES TO GET ADMITTED IN ICU

2010-07-05 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The rich, powerful and well connected can manipulate things to get
themselves out of any tight or awkward situation. We have seen it in the
past with other politicians and now once again with former Tourism Minister
Mr. Micky Pacheco. He managed to evade jail and stay in the comfort of the
Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Margao Hospicio hospital. He was well all
day and suddenly when told to go to jail complained of hypertension, a
medical condition unknown in persons with elevated libido levels. He
allegedly later tested positive for jaundice. Did his health condition merit
his privileged stay in the ICU? The authorities and the doctors in
particular have a lot to answer. Will the same “health concern” be shown to
all other accused in custody.

For Micky Pacheco it is a repeat of what he did in 2002 to avoid going to
jail when he was arrested by the Colva Police in the Betalbatim shack
burning case. Like then, the doctors now have again succumbed to political
pressure. “Fielding”, “Setting” and “Fixing” is what our politicians are
best at.

I have not seen any Goa Friendly action or announce ment in the Media by
MLS Francisco Silveira . Neither am I aware off any Anti-Goan Action by him.

Nevertheless Goans in Swindon MUST question him as an elected
representative; on what he is doing to preserve Goa, its land and its
Identity? I suggest giving him a signature campaign or a list of demands of
what we want to happen in Goa; perhaps this will send a clear/strong message
to our Anti-Goan Corrupt Government...

Does anyone have any information on Shree Francisco
Silveira.
Is he Goan friendly, does he help his constituents and
Goan people,Is he corrupted or honest?
Kudos to the Swidon Goan committee.

Re: [Goanet] Goa in the gutter (ADDENDUM) - In defence of admin Noronha

2010-07-05 Thread floriano

This is not the usual proverbial SOUR GRAPES
These are acutely sour, very very SOUR GRAPES, coming from American reject,
yours faithfully below.

I do not support neither Monohar Parrikar's rule, nor the rule of the MGP,
the Congress, under Pratapsing Rane and of course of Digu. Digu's rule being
the worst, i.e. corrupt as well as communal. aka CONGRESS and the RSS BJP
combined a veritable hybrid.

But what we saw with Manohar Parrikar, it was a despotic and tyrannical rule
when he had the audacity to undermine the very well being of Goa and Goan,
even after having come in through the back door with no clear mandate. He
was not a democratic ruler. He was SALAZAR reincarnate, clad, immersed and
reeking of SAFFRON.

A lot of these guy, like the below 'yours faithfully' were peeing in their
pants at the very thought of Manohar-bab. They even regularly called me from
London to convince me that Goasuraj and BJP (with Manohar-bab) is the
ultimate solution for Goa (since their ladla had the acumen of being the
best CEO in the entire world). But when I differed to the point of
ridiculing them that they were trying to put up the HUMPTY DUMPTY back on
the wall, the very Humpty Dumpty who had the penchant to fall again and
again, they were driven mad with fury to the point of calling me names. When
I told them that they will have to accumulate a ware-house full of fevicol
to patch-up the Humpty Dumpty over and over again they went berserk. I have
also told them that Manohar-bab's IIT in Metallurgy is the lowest in the
stream in the IIT. Any one who cannot get into any other stream, opts for
Metallurgy. How IIT made Manohar-bab an able administrator is anyone's
guess. Sitting upto 3 to 4 a.m. with the load of files is administration?
Walking along the Campal streets (during IFFI 2004), supervising the work at
3 a.m. is administration?? Destroying the marvel of underground
storm-water-drains of the Panjim city to put up stupid superficial make up
is development for the IFFI is able administration? Spending 24 crores on
the renovation of Kala Academy which couldn't cost more than 2 crores is
able administration? Getting Gujarat's Modi's ladla to set up INOX at the
cost of 26 crores when the best of INOXs are existing elsewhere for as
little as 8 crores is able administration?? Putting up Khorjuem bridge in
order to give a party to the Bollywood stars and starlets at the cost of 24
crores, the same which could be built is 5 to 6 crores is able
administration?? Getting the Goa's police force packed with RSS Cadres is
able administration? Letting Mapusa Market, the Mapusa Bus Stand, the Mapusa
River rot ( his home town) is able administration??? Manufacturing a vile
and communal VCD in the name of Freedom Fight of Goa by getting some
chamchas freedom fighters to certify it as authentic and forcing it on every
school being the State's Education Minister is able administration??
Getting in Babush Monserrate, a third rate punk into the Ministerial stream,
sacking him ultimately and then going berserk to get at the chair again is
able administration???

I could go on an on for hours together. I have nothing against Manohar-bab
personally. But I do not at all agree that a person who is obsessed with
POWER and who has not even an IOTA of public relations in his blood-stream
should be forced on GOA, a forward looking state, as its CEO. When I told
these jokers in London and in America that the best they could do in to send
their breakable idol to a crash course in PUBLIC RELATIONS in any of the
better Universities of London or America, and then seek to put him up as the
CEO of Goa, they had nothing to say.

Do they have any thing to say to this still??
If they do, let them come out in the open and I will deal with them.

My advice to them is not to make admin Frederick Noronha your pot of bile
to accumulate your maha frustrations. I, Floriano Lobo will vouch for him
any time and all the way.

This does not mean that I give a clean chit to Digu either. They must
remember that Digu has out-smarted their ladla Manohar-bab in sitting on the
chair which their blue-eyed boy is only aspiring to sit on, again. And to
say that Digu was Manohar-bab deputy when Manohar-bab was the KING is
altogether a different cup of tea. Both are RSS-BJP culture.

My good advice to these jokers is to shut up so that they are not laughed at
more and more when they open their gobs.
At best, let them use their arse licking talents in producing another video
recording of their blued-eyed boy to convince the world that he is even more
of a joker than a promising CEO.

Cheers
