Polluters do not pay
Sheriff of Nottingham

Phew, I got tired of the number crunching the last two weeks, so I am going
to give us all a respite. I’m just yanking your chain. Sorry, doesn’t happen
that way by a long shot. But you know what, when you all wake up from your
deep-seated sleep, then maybe we can at least stop the politician at the
door, if not shut the door on him. Till then here’s another adrenalin rush.
The Sheriff of Nottingham otherwise known as Filipe Neri Rodrigues, the
Forest Minister. called another meeting of the Goa State Board for Wildlife
that has now come to be virtually an annual affair. The August 25 meet, it
turned out, was destined to miss out on crucial issues at hand. Last year,
at a similar meet, a tiger enclosure for Bondla was shoved into the faces of
all those who attended on the day of the meeting itself. This meet was
concerned only with the Goa Forest Development’s intent to tie up with
Southern River Adventures Sports Pvt. Ltd. Now, anything that happens in
Goa is through the back door, or through a window left ajar. Never the front
door.

Pity the Madhei river

The people living in a 15 km stretch of river from Codal on the northern
tributary of the Mhadei which joins the eastern tributary coming from
Krishnapur and ending at Sonal, will if this plan is followed through, be
the next recipients of a whole slew of irritants including roughnecks who
will mix the effervescence of booze with the froth of white water rafting.
That, of course in the name of tourism and who gives a crap what you and I
think. This is how the Sheriff of Nottingham looks at it, and I quote the
actual minutes of the meet: “This stretch of river offers stunning scenery,
many exciting rapids (approx. 30) and is perhaps the most challenging than
any other rafting section in South India. As in Dandeli, the Mhadei section
runs through the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, though at no point of time will
forest be touched enroute to any place. It is only the waters which will be
used with both the start (Codal-Derodem bridge) and finish point (Sonal) out
of the sanctuary limits.” They said that of the sand dunes, remember; of the
beaches, of public access to beaches, of the River Princess (the salvage,
that is), of IFFI (International Film Festival of India), of SEZs (Special
Economic Zones), of, of ……..; all those were pushed through, delete that,
bulldozed over you because they were supposed to be good for you. Look what
happened. No dunes, 5-star hotels where depleting beaches stood, an iffy
IFFI, a stranded Princess and SEZs entangled in lawsuits.

Will Dudhsagar fall?

A board member Tribolo D’Souza raised the issue again of freeing the limit
on the number (98) of vehicles permitted to take tourists to Dudhsagar
falls. I am told he does this as ritualistically as the monsoons falling
over the Western Ghats. The limit was rightly imposed to protect the area
which is part of the Bhagwan Mahavir National Park. Now, apart from being a
pal of a pal of the Sheriff of Nottingham, D’Souza owns taxis and has a
restaurant there. What more can I say? In fact, the entire approach to the
4/6 laning of NH4A which was on the agenda, was how should I say, as wanting
as the Board’s will to protect wildlife.

The ‘Kala’ of money

This government has a compulsive obsession with building Ravindra Bhavans
and Kala Bhavans. Its stated policy is that these edifices are built when
people want them, only then. Since you and I have not gone stark raving mad
yet despite all that happens around us, we know that’s not true. And culture
vultures we are not. The things we want, we don’t get, garbage clearance
being just one in a growing list of To Do’s. For many senior citizens these
wishes must have gone into their Bucket List. The government had approved
Ravindra Bhavans/mini Kala Bhavans for Sanquelim, Mormugao, Pernem, Mapusa,
Canacona and Valpoi. Which means your wish list won’t fructify even into the
next decade. Because all your tax bucks are poured like concrete into making
Goa a haven for bhavans. The score so far; the Ravindra Bhavan at Curchorem,
the Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir at Ponda and the Ravindra Bhavan at Margao have
been constructed. The Ravindra Bhavan at Sanquelim and the Ravindra Bhavan
at Baina in Vasco da Gama and the Ravindra Bhavan on the Verna-Dabolim
bypass are under construction.

…And it’s

Vassant Baliga Report: A day after GPYCC President Sankalp Amonkar termed
Sharad Pawar-led party as liability on Congress and Jose Phillip DSouza a
corrupt, NCP Goa spokesman Trojano DMello called Digambar Kamat as father of
corruption as Congress was found involved in a massive scam siphoning funds
collected for Canacona flood victims. Showing the original receipts of the
congress, DMello said that the receipts did not have any serial numbers.

Comments: Does this hint that siphoning was pre-planned? Were only Youth
involved or also Subhash and co? What points to Digamber’s involvement? How is
he the father of Corruption? Are Sankalp and Trojan hand in glove? Sankalp gets
Cong ticket against Jose if NCP-Cong alliance fails. Trojan gets NCP ticket
against Willy.

Another aspect is that Government had planned an expenditure of Rs 120 crore on
flood relief and restoration. Most of this money was to be spent through PWD,
Health and Social Welfare ministries. All these ministers are uncles of
corruption if Digamber is the father. Can someone enlighten how this Rs 120
crore were actually spent? Why is BJP indifferent? Or as usual, did Congress
use BJP contractors to spend the money?

KONKANI CHOLCHITRAM [Konkani Filmbook] by Isidore Dantas.
  - a review
  by Francis Rodrigues.

One glorious summer morning almost a hundred and twenty years ago today, the
great Thomas Alva Edison opened our eyes to the magic of the kinetoscope, and
the enchantment of film was born. It was left to the Lumiere brothers to chart
the course of cinema four years thence with their path-breaking 'moving
pictures', in much the same way that over a century later Konkani film maven
Isidore Dantas has documented its history in his own Konkani Cholchitram-
literally Konkani moving pictures - or Konkani Filmbook.

Since their beginnings in the late 1940s, Konkani films and film songs have
dominated the swathe of Konkan culture in south-west India, growing even
stronger across the diaspora as the Konkan folk migrated across the globe.
Their content, both on celluloid and the printed score has been described
variously as lush, folksy, trite, schmaltzy, easy-on-the-eye and ear. Quite
possibly true. Jazz never really gained a foothold in Konkani filmdom. Isidore
Dantas addresses many of these issues, tracing in detail the rise and fall of
Konkani film over the past six decades - starting with Al Jerry Braganza's
Mogacho Anvddo (1949), the first Konkani film to appear almost two decades
after India's first talking picture Alam Ara in 1931.

Whilst to the average filmi-buff Goencar, the content of Konkani film is often
dismissed as purely commercial, Mr. Dantas' work demonstrates quite
convincingly that in terms of the story-line, moral issues and dramatic
content, it was the parent film that quite powerfully shaped the Konkani film
song rather than the other way around. His documentation of every minuscule
tidbit of trivia that he was able to lay his hands on, quite eloquently
demonstrates this. I will not spoil the surprise and gasps of discovery that
you will encounter buried deep within Konkani
Cholchitram, but suffice to say you will be pleasantly delighted.

The late lamented Andrew Greno Viegas commenced documenting our filmi-pop
cultural history in his beautiful 50 years of Konkani cinema, which was to be
followed by 90 years of Konkani music. I cannot resist mentioning my own
successful commencement of Volume 1 of this series Greatest Konkani Song Hits
which will eventually cover the whole gamut. Mr. Dantas too has included the
rudimentary musical score of 85 songs (from his total of 107), a veritable
treasure-trove. Where my work differs from his is in the transcription and
arrangement - mine being for performance, whereas his is academic. Inevitably,
Mr. Dantas' dissertation leads to a different and enriched perspective of
Konkani film, their key role in our sub-
culture, and subsequent influence on our second and third-generation diaspora.

I grew up abroad in a deeply-steeped Western music culture, where my father (a
medical man) performed the violin with an Italian accompanist.
The handful of Indian radio stations there played a cross of filmi-geet
and devotional songs throughout the week. Yet one evening was indelibly
different. Friday nights as I lay deliriously soaking in a hot tub, promptly at
9 pm from hidden speakers throughout the house, emerged the heart-tugging
strains of Frank Fernand's score from Amchem Noxib. It was an unforgettable
experience. Granted the music was lush, even banal. But it echoed a haunting
Latin past, buried images of a land and culture I never knew - literally
'moving pictures' in the windmills of my mind. The same 'moving pictures' that
the pioneering Isidore Dantas has so movingly engineered to life.

To most Goans, at home or in the diaspora, the golden age of Konkani film, in
picture and in song, spanned the 3 decades 1949-1978, starting with Al Jerry's
Mogacho Anvddo and poetically ending with Chris Perry's Bhueirantlo Munis.
Certainly the music, if not necessarily the story,
was unforgettable. Mr. Dantas' documentation of this period is epic - his
collection of memorabilia quite startling. Not that his coverage of the
following three decades is any less - in total 282 colour-filled pages of 269
photographs covering 31 Konkani celluloid productions, all the way to last
year's internationally acclaimed Poltoddcho Munis.

If there is any hesitation, perhaps it is that Mr. Dantas' text is entirely
in Konkani. But the

I find the dismissive comments below disturbing. And a lack of
understanding of the seriousness of concussions, especially within youth
sports, even more disturbing.

Here is a recent news report:

And here is a link I have passed on to parents over the years in my

I think the experts on Goanet in the above field should address issues
such as this that may affect youth in Goa rather than argue endlessly
about God, Science, Life and other topics that end-up in dysfunctional
threads. Get off the carousel, you guys!!

I agree with Frederick Noronha that this sort of reaction based on

general conclusions. There maybe many other reasons why this one girls

This is getting pretty embarrassing for the poster posting from
amigo...@att.net. He keeps boasting that he is too smart compared to other
Goanetters like me, and that he is exercising his great genius in playing a
highly intellectual game that we cannot figure out. The truth of course is
exactly the opposite.

Already all of his earlier braggadocious claims have been shot down as useless
duds. This time everyone ought to be able to see that he is trying to cover up
the fact that he goofed up rather foolishly on his various IP address claims,
and lost badly in the process. This can be easily demonstrated in this way. He
claimed earlier the following:

QUOTE
3. He can get access to the sender's IP address. For those who are not
familiar with what this is, the IP is an unique identifier that can be
traced to the sender. When the emails are routed via the GoaNet
distribution list, the original IP is masked and replaced by GoaNet's
own IP. This is private information and should not be divulged to
third parties and GoaNet is doing the right thing here.
UNQUOTE
.Jim Fernandes

Then when his IP address was revealed by Mervyn from his Goanet post he changed
his tune and claimed the following:

QUOTE
Finally, when you put together all the four tokens that made up the IP address,
all the email header did, is gave you the public IP. As it's name implies,
this IP is open for anyone to see and you can't do CRAP with it. This is akin
to someone saying, Hey look, I found your zipcode
UNQUOTE
.Jim Fernandes

And now he tells us that he has spoofed his IP to create a fake IP address.
Any sensible person would be able to see through this silly facade, and ask the
following questions:

1. If Goanet can mask the IP address then why does he have to spoof his IP to
create a fake IP address?

2. Which of his following contradictory claims is he standing by?

A. the IP is an unique identifier that can be traced to the sender.
.Jim Fernandes

B. As it's name implies, this IP is open for anyone to see and you can't do
CRAP with it.
.Jim Fernandes

C. When the emails are routed via the GoaNet distribution list, the original
IP is masked and replaced by GoaNet's own IP. This is private information and
should not be divulged to third parties and GoaNet is doing the right thing
here.
.Jim Fernandes

Cheers,

Santosh

Greetings ISfTE members.

Many of you have already received a note announcing the death of our dear
colleague Dr. Cornell DaCosta just a few days ago. Those of you who have
only been with the society for a few years would have at least heard the
name and have come to know his significant role as one of the original
co-founders of this group in 1980. You no doubt have heard that he is one
of our most prolific scholars and educational leaders, and as a result
helped envision and shape ISfTE into the structure we largely enjoy today.
Cornell was a believer in collaboration, accountability and leadership.
These attributes will go down as the least of the depth and breadth of
talent he displayed as a gifted steward of teaching and learning. More
than anything, he was a passionate articulator for lifting up the
under-served, for the invisible, for people that find themselves on the
margins and as a consequence their access and development compromised. He
felt that this society could be a good place for their voices to be heard,
and I would submit that he has left us with a charge to do better; even in

Hi Jo
I only know a few spots but wish to learn more to visit the next time I am
in Goa which will be November for as long as possible.
The Elephant is in a park in Panjim I belive, near the bridge over the
Mandovi river.
The ferry boat is on the Zuari river I think. Not sure of the name of the
area but it is very similar to a ferry I approached down a narrow lane on
that river some time back.

BICHOLIM, SEPT 16
Stray animals have been creating havoc in Bicholim City, even as
Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) has claimed that the menace would be
solved within a month.
Stray cows and cattle have been creating problem to the commuters in
the city. The menace is serious, as everyday over 40 stray animals are
seen on the roads. During market day, it creates problem to the
vegetable vendors and grocery shop owners.
“The problem is very serious and the municipal council has to act upon
this and solve the issue,” Naresh Kadkade, a shop owner, told Herald.
“The High Court has also directed that such cattle should not remain
on the roads and it is the responsibility of the concerned municipal
council to check on this,” added Kadkade.
“BMC has deputed a worker in the market, who is seen running after the
animals, especially on the market day, but ultimately they return back
to the same spot after some time. All these animals should be tied and
the owners should be fined,” said Kadkade.
It may be recalled that during the last council meeting, BMC had
resolved to keep the cattle menace under control and had also decided
to assign the responsibility to a private agency from Valpoi.

As per the contract, BMC would pay the agency Rs 2 lakh, who take
away the stray cattle.
It was also decided to fine the cattle owner Rs 250 per day.
When asked about the council decision and its implementation, the
authorities admitted that the stray cattle are a grave problem in
Bicholim. The authorities assured that the menace would be solved by
the second week of October.

However on Sunday morning, when the family members saw that Parab was
not moving, they shifted him to PHC Bicholim, where he was declared
dead.

Rajendra Kakodkar's questions: Does this hint that siphoning was
pre-planned? Were only Youth involved or also Subhash and co? What points to
Digamber?s involvement? How is he the father of Corruption? Are Sankalp and
Trojan hand in glove? Sankalp gets Cong ticket against Jose if NCP-Cong
alliance fails. Trojan gets NCP ticket against Willy.

Another aspect is that Government had planned an expenditure of Rs 120 crore
on flood relief and restoration. Most of this money was to be spent through
PWD, Health and Social Welfare ministries. All these ministers are uncles of
corruption if Digamber is the father. Can someone enlighten how this Rs 120
crore were actually spent? Why is BJP indifferent? Or as usual, did Congress
use BJP contractors to spend the money?

My answers to Rajendra's questions: May be, it was not pre-planned but after
Youth Congress collected about 75 lakhs (NCP claims so) definitely some
thing prevented them from disbursing the amount to flood victims and proper
accounting! Not only youth congress wing collected the funds but also main
congress party did collect the funds. Aam Admi till date is not aware were
both these funds have gone! Subhash did come on record saying 'person
responsible to announce the details about collected funds by congress party
(presumably main party, as he is not responsible for youth congress) is too
busy these days'.

Apart from this, for the benefit of flood affected victims, many Goans have
also contributed to 'chief minister's relief fund (CMRF)' account. By rule,
Controller General of Accounts (CGA) of Government of India cannot audit
this account. This means, chief minister is free to utilize the money
collected as he wants with no questions being asked. More over chief
minister has till date not given/published any statement as to how much
money is collected in CMRF for the benefit of flood affected victims and how
he has spent the collected amount. This is besides announced and planned
expenditure of Rs 120 crores of which no Goan knows anything about. Yes,
Goans only know that chief minister was bagging Central government to give
Goa Rs 120 Crores for the removal of grounded River Princess! Even in this
case, no Goan knows whether the requested amount is given by Central
government or not. May be these two facts points finger at chief minister
and for which he must have been called 'father of corruption'.

Like 'Lion always roars when he is hungry', both the persons claiming as
aspirant of election ticket are roaring to show their presence and for their
share of food (in this case its money share). Hope I have answered
Rajendra's questions correctly - hope I am wrong!

Mother with terminal cancer clings to life to see her son's first day at
school... and dies the next day

By Daily Mail Reporter

A brave mother found the strength to be at her son's first day of school before
cancer claimed her life the following day.

In a final act of defiance against the disease, 31-year-old Gemma Hogg checked
out of the hospice where she had gone to die to see four-year-old Thomas go to
infant school.

She then returned to the hospice in Crawley, Sussex, and passed away a day
later on Tuesday, September 7, surrounded by her family.

Proud mum, proud son: In a final act of defiance against the cancer which was
to take her life the following day, Gemma Hogg, 31, checked out of the hospice
where she had gone to die to see her son Thomas go to infant school. Here she
stands with him outside the family home before they set off

After dropping Thomas off at school, Gemma returned to the hospice and passed
away a day later, surrounded by her family

Speaking about his wife of five years, Simon, 42, said: 'She was so happy as a
mother. It seemed to complete her. She was never interested in material things,
she just loved having her family around her.'

He added: 'She wasn't supposed to come out of the hospice but that was Gemma -
she was stubborn to the end.'

Mother-of-three given just months to live after bungling doctors missed her
cancer 20 times

Mrs Hogg, a mother-of-three from Sutton, Surrey, was struck down by an
aggressive form of breast cancer in 2008.

'She had some cushions made with her photo on them with each of the three
children with the words When you need a cuddle I'm always here'

Her father Peter Carpenter added: 'She was amazing. She still made the effort
to take Tom to school the day before she died. She really wanted to see him in
his school uniform - that was her goal.'

She and her husband moved to Sutton in 2003, where they raised their three
children, Isabelle, six, Thomas, four, and James, two.

The family, who had planned to relocate to France, received the devastating
news two years ago that Mrs Hogg had a rare form of breast cancer.

Gemma with her youngest son, James. Mrs Hogg got the all-clear last spring but
went back for more tests when she started suffering from sore ribs. In October
2009 a scan revealed cancer spots in her lungs

Last Christmas: Gathered under the Christmas tree Simon and Gemma embrace their
three children (from left) Thomas, four, James, two, and Isabelle, six
With all their furniture abroad, the family's plans changed dramatically and
they moved in with Mrs Hogg's parents in Horley, Surrey.

Mrs Hogg was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer - an aggressive form of
the disease which affects just four per cent of sufferers - and underwent six
months of chemotherapy and a mastectomy.

Her husband, an IT project manager, considered taking legal action against the
NHS, for what he believes was a 'long summer of misdiagnosis' after a lump,
initially discovered by his wife in around 2007, was dismissed as harmless
breast tissue, then mastitis, and was later treated as a cyst.

It was only when Mrs Hogg paid to go private that the severity of her condition
was discovered.

Mr Hogg said: 'Inflammatory breast cancer is hard to diagnose, especially after
a baby has been born because the symptoms are similar to mastitis.

'With Gemma, the lump she had spread to her skin so when it was diagnosed it
was at stage three.'

He added: 'She was always positive and never moaned about things and she wanted
to be treated normally and make the most of what she had.'

Mrs Hogg got the all-clear last spring but went back for more tests when she
started suffering from sore ribs. In October 2009 a scan revealed cancer spots
in her lungs.

'She always believed she would get it again,' said Mr Hogg.

Her father, Peter, added: 'She used to say I know it's going to come back but
I'm going to beat it'.'

In January 2010, Mrs Hogg was told the cancer had spread and was incurable. But
instead of dwelling on the condition, the courageous mother-of-three began
preparing her children for her passing.

Her father said: 'She had some cushions made with her photo on them with each
of the three children with the words When you need a cuddle I'm always here.'

BICHOLIM, SEPT 19
Strongly opposing the newly proposed mine in the area, the Karapur
Sarvan Panchayat has stated that they would resort to agitation to
stop the project.
Speaking to media persons, Karapur-Sarvan Sarpanch Santos Talkar said
recently a mining activity has started in the panchayat area and some
environmentalists have voiced against the activity.
Even though the activities are still at its budding stage, extraction
work is on in the area.
“The panchayat has decided to oppose the mining activity and will
resort to massive agitation if the activities continue,” said Talkar.
“Many villagers are still dependent on agriculture and if these
activities are carried out, all the farms will be destroyed,” he
added.
It may be recalled that Karapur Sarvan Panchayat is surrounded by
greenery and there are several rare and huge trees in the area.
The residents fear that if mining is started, they would lose all
their natural wealth.

PRESS NOTE:

AWARENESS ON CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION

Cancer, the most dreaded disease can strike any individual with lethal results.
Cancer of the neck of womb (cervix) is the most common form of cancer
affecting Indian women. Risk of cancer of the cervix for women in India is
2.4% compared to 1.3% for rest of the world. Nearly 80% of this cancer is
detected in late stages in India compared to 10 20% in developed countries
like USA. The mortality therefore is highest in India.

On the positive side, cervical cancer has a long precancerous stage and can be
cured 100% if detected in this stage or early stages. Screening and prevention
of this cancer is therefore possible.

Lions Club of Mormugao is organizing a cervical cancer awareness programme at
St. Andrews Church Hall, Vasco da Gama, on 26/9/2010 at 10.30 a.m. The
speakers for this programme are Dr. Nimish Pillai, Gynaecologist, MPT Hospital
and Dr. Shailesh Kamat, practicing Gynaecologist from Vasco.

Public especially ladies are requested to attend and benefit from this
awareness programme.

“Corruption undermines democratic institutions,...

Baai Carmen, here in lies the problem and there may be discussions and
*yawn* more discussions, all fruitless...because I think some of us
wrongly assess the nature of the beast (that is us Goichis). We aren't
made for democracy, nor an orderly or civil way of life (you mentioned
Goan civil society in an earlier post- my pet pigling and me laughed
s hard); ours is a life carved out of chaos and mayhem and we
wiggle in betweenslippery and slimy...and the only thing peaceful
are the swaying palms (not even, my fresh from Kuiit neighbour has
brought a plastic version).

One can give you a million examples but an easy one is to go to any
bankwatch how there everyone is trying to get ahead of the queue.
Now, get real yo..this is going to take yours, my pet pigling
Catrina's and my lifetimes to change this, maybe more.
Say, why get rid of corruption anyways? For whose benefit? Goa is a
lost cause...and we are done...in a very short time, Goichis will be
rare as wild boars (in Goa that is).

I think there is a fair assessment in Goa and the Blue Mountain
(on our nature). I know the chappie is down right raci*t in todays
politically correct world but, he has a point..

Some earlier poster said the father of corruption is. *** from
Margao.. The true artist of corruption were the P*rtuguese where
everything worked on the 'favor' system. In post-liberation Goa, it
was the now X spouse of a former CM who started with the public
transport system*wink wink wink*...be my guest, take a guess.

As for the jokesleast you have forgotten, there is a cryptic
message in Goan humour and Iet me remind some of the grumpy majority
on the GoaNet...lighten up: its a Goan thing to be jovial and laugh at
ourselves, even if it is about corruption! Since when did we take life
seriously?

Interesting how faced with one of the biggest crisis in Goa which in my view
is CORRUPTION, there has been such poor reaction to the call for action in
this forum – the reaction ( or lack of it) makes me think of the ostrich who
buries its head in the sand , and hopes the danger will go away all by
 itself…..    Instead of getting a resounding YES! LET’S DO SOMETING! … I
mostly got “beating around the bush” responses and few jokes, except for a
couple of positives, which led into a discussion about electricity!  and
which I hope will illuminate the path to action!   Here is a paragraph
from the UN document  - Convention against Corruption :  “Corruption
undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development and
contributes to governmental instability. Corruption attacks the foundation
of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, perverting the
rule of law and creating bureaucratic quagmires whose only reason for
existing is the soliciting of bribes.“   Did that inspire you to act? .
By the way, let’s remind ourselves that it is not enough to say – yes,
let’s do it! Let’s fight corruption.   The questions of:  WHO, WHEN and HOW
remain to be resolved and pinned down. Commitment, organization and
mobilization and leadership need to be sorted out urgently.   And by the way
Soter, the fact the women of Bicholim closed down all the bars, does not
surprise me at all!  India’s biggest socio-environmental-anti-alcohol
movement renown world over, the Chipko movement, was started and faught  by
women!  Most people think it was just about hugging trees. Few people know
that the Chipko women were also fighting alcoholism and corruption amongst
their husbands , who accepted bribes from contractors to cut trees, and used
 the money to

For Petes sake..we are talking of specifically basketball and
concussions! These days of specialists for everything, we are building namby
pamby beings, with no faith in the human body to build its own defences. So we
have weak immune systems due antibiotics , pills, and scans for everything,
psycomatic diseases. Nobody said do not beware of concussions which can be if
you hit your head against the door or even another persons head etc.It can
happen in any sport, and anyhow, anywhere. So don't scare children away from
participating in basketball. And pray ,are you an expert in the above fields?

I find the dismissive comments below disturbing. And a lack of understanding of
the seriousness of concussions, especially within youth sports, even more
disturbing.

Here is a recent news report:

And here is a link I have passed on to parents over the years in my field of

I think the experts on Goanet in the above field should address issues such as
this that may affect youth in Goa rather than argue endlessly about God,

I agree with Frederick Noronha that this sort of reaction based on
one interview is immature.By all means report it, but do not jump to
general conclusions. There maybe many other reasons why this one girls
neck was affected by basketball. No heading like in football is done,
and all games require turning the head .In fact concussion due
hammering of head due basketball is unimaginable!.As a basket ball

Dear Goanetters,
Professor of Tübingen, Lohfink Gerhard, wrote a book in German. It was
subsequently translated into Italian and was entitled Dio non esiste! Gli
argomenti del nuovo ateismo, (God does not exist! Arguments of new
atheism), Saint Paul Editions, 2010:

It is a passionate defense of religion against attacks of new forms of
atheism. the Author examines the main assertions of atheism and refutes,
among others, starting with their quotations: Ludwig Feuerbach, F.Nietzsche,
A.Schopenhauer, C.Darwin and Richard Dawkins.
Who holds the best answer to the great questions of life, the one who
believes in Jesus Christ or the one who refuses to join any faith in God? To
all those who remained Christians it can only help them to realise anew the
richness of their faith for themselves and for others. In the early
centuries of the Church it was still normal to live in love as Christians.
In the twenty-first century they should witness to love again in a new way.
Gerhard Lohfink is German theologian, Professor of the New Testament
exegesis at the University of Tübingen.

Regards.
Fr.Ivo

Loutolim Goatees proved to be deserving winners of the 2010 Goan Inter-Village
Soccer tournament when they downed Aguada Waves 3-1 in the final at the Esther
Shiner Sadium in Toronto on September 18.
The team had won the title in 2000 and 2008.
Showing maturity with better coordination and well-patterned movements,
Loutolim exercised slight control over the match. It was not long after the
start that the team took the lead from a penalty kick by Neil D’Silva. The
penalty was awarded when a Aguada defender handled the ball in the box.
Displaying good fighting spirit, Aguada kept the Loutolim forwards at bay and
made some sporadic runs into the rival territory. One such led to the team
getting the equaliser from Andrew Saviel before half-time.
On resumpton, Neil struck again to make it 2-1 for Loutolim. As time was
running out for Aguada, Ron Monteiro sealed the game for the winners with a low
drive.

 solved within a month.

When asked about the council decision and its implementation, the
authorities admitted that the stray cattle are a grave problem in
Bicholim. The authorities assured that the menace would be solved by
 the second week of October.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/events-tournaments/commonwealth-games/top-stories/Canadas-flagbearer-for-Commonwealth-Games-is-ethnic-Goan/a

NEW DELHI: Ken Pereira, a hockey veteran of Indian origin, has been selected to
carry the flag for Canada at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

The two-time Olympian's family hails from Goa, although he was born in Toronto,
and he is naturally thrilled to lead the 225-member strong contingent in New
Delhi.

I'm just picturing that moment...of holding that flag and walking out having
300 to 400 Canadians behind me, Canadian newspaper The Globe And Mail quoted
Pereira as saying. It's especially sweet because it's the birthplace of my
parents. We still have a lot of family over there and I'm sure they'll come out
and support the Canadian team, added the 37-year-old, who captained the
Canadian team in the World Cup in New Delhi this February.

The midfielder from Unionville, Ontario, has earned over 300 international caps
and is the first team-sport athlete to become the Canadian flagbearer for the
CWG. He has made three previous Commonwealth Games appearances, and now plays
professional hockey for Dutch club HGC.

As a child, Ken Pereira (37) harboured dreams of playing ice hockey, which is a
much bigger sport than field hockey in Canada. But his hopes were dashed when
he
realized he was too small to play professionally.

But Pereira - who will be flag-bearer for the Canadian contingent during the
CWG
opening ceremony in New Delhi-said he never thought of changing his citizenship
to play in India or elsewhere.

Just being born in Canada, I couldn't imagine playing for another country, he
said. Even though (field) hockey is bigger in other countries, I couldn't
imagine putting on another jersey unless it had the maple leaf on it.

With encouragement from his uncle and cousin, he picked up a field hockey stick
at age 16.

Pereira hopes that the sight of him holding the flag at the Jawaharlal Nehru
Stadium will remind the folks back home in Canada that hockey is also played
off
the ice.

Some people don't even know that we have a men's field hockey team that goes
to
the Olympics and stuff like that, he said. I think it will promote the sport
in Canada, for sure.

Subject: Re: [Goanet] Science Cannot Explain Life

Perhaps this seemingly inconclusive topic may prolong inconclusively as
long as the obscure gray line demarcating noumenon and phenomenon is
not explained in black and white.
*Science has not yet given a definite answer about the origins of life. It
cannot give an answer on the meaning of human existence.

The arrogance of the scientist often prevents him from seeing that he is

as much a believer as a mystic is. A scientist believes in phenomenon
and adamantly refuses to believe until ‘The first cause’ or ‘God’ is
proven as a fact. He is willing ( or is he?) to believe in Him only if
he sees God as a gray bearded fellow and shakes His hand! A mystic finds
it meaningful to approach the subject differently by saying “Thou indeed
art, O Lord, reveal Thy glorious form unto me.”
The two approaches are obviously opposed; that there is a conflict is
but understandable.
**There should not be any conflict, since Science deals with the phenomenal
world. Only Faith can tell us something definite on soul, afterlife, God,
Resurrection.

The conflict, however, is neither in the scientist's mind (since he is

convinced of god's non-existence), nor is it in the mind of the mystic
who has 'found' God by virtue of his mystical experience. Yet a mystic
claims to have arrived at a definite conclusion to his inquiry. The
scientist, with his typical nonchalance “does not care” ( as quoted by
Dr. Helekar) to explain “the meaning” of life. He allows, rather
imperatively, 'subjective' belief to whoever that seeks some desperate
formula to allay his troubled mind regarding 'meaning of life'.
**Scientist cannot answer this question (does not care).

The question troubles seekers of 'meaning' beyond the mere explanation
of phenomenon. It is indeed a question which falls in the supra-physical
realm. Adherents of science, since it “does not care” to explain
supra-physical matter should not bother to enter in the discussion
regarding the topic that's beyond their purview. Instead, the scientist
or the disciple of science proffers to proclaim his
prejudice. “Hail”, he says, “God does not exist, for I do not care
whether He exists or not!”
**Scientists who believe only in Science become agnostics, they do not know
about it...

Regards.

Science Cannot Explain Life

Excellent post by Santosh. Tautology by educated conservatives is well known.
911 was a result of fundamentalism by educated experts. Science is galloping.
Even if not crystal clear today, the concepts of life would unfold some day.
Better say: People trying to explain life do not know enough science to explain
Life.

Rajendra
Santosh had posted:
--- On Sun, 9/19/10, Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão wrote: Has science anywhere
explained that if you put all these chemical and physical components together,
it could produce ‘Life’? Or for that matter, produce a living substance?   Yes.
Science has done precisely that over the last 70 years or so. Indeed, Craig
Venter and his colleagues have already taken the first steps towards creating
the first synthetic life form. Please see the following news
reports: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/researchers-create-first-synthetic-life/621927/ http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/may/20/craig-venter-synthetic-life-form The
original paper has been published at the following link in the prestigious
journal
Science:http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/science.1190719 The
main problem with the post appended below is a lack of clear thinking about
what is being explained, and by what. Indeed, almost every single statement in
that post is
either a meaningless tautology or an antiquated pre-scientific presumption
that has no explanatory value at all, and that has been thoroughly refuted by
scientific evidence. Here are the examples: 1. It has explained ‘Living
Substance’. None of these points explain what ‘Life’ is!.Dr. dos Reis
Falcão  The distinction being drawn here is utterly meaningless. If
science has explained what makes a substance a living substance, it has by
definition explained what life is. If one understands the meaning of an
adjective i.e. living, it follows logically that one also understands the
meaning of the noun from which it is derived.  2. It is ‘Life’ that initiates
all these physical and chemical processes and not vice-versa. .Dr. dos
Reis Falcão 3. It is ‘Life’ that creates these chemicals within the cells and
body of the living substance. .Dr. dos Reis FalcãoScience has explained
exactly why these
statements are wrong, in addition to being meaningless tautologies.  The word
life has no explanatory value. It was a noun that was coined in the
pre-scientific age to refer to observations of growth, reproduction,
inheritance and self-initiated movement in natural objects. Science has
comprehensively and convincingly explained the physical and chemical processes
that mediate these observed phenomena. How the physical and chemical processes
are initiated, and how the chemicals are created within cells are completely
explained by basic physics and chemistry. There is no special spooky
explanatory power in the word life beyond being a label to collectively refer
to these phenonomena. The above quotes are therefore a vestige from a
pre-scientific age that believed in a mysterious vital or life force.
Scientific evidence has completely refuted this vitalist notion.4. ‘Life’ is
something abstract and an abstract thing cannot be explained by
science as to prove scientifically you need concrete proof and not deductive
proof...Dr. dos Reis Falcão The lack of clear and consistent rational
thinking is obvious in the above non sequitur because it immediately follows
the contradictory earlier statements 2 and 3 above.  If life is something
abstract then how does this abstract thing initiate all these concrete
physical and chemical processes and not vice-versa, as claimed in statement
2?  If life is something abstract then how does it create concrete
chemicals within the cells and body of the living substance, as claimed in
statement 3?

My response: I believe in what Fr. Ivo says i.e. 'Bible is not a scientific
book' and 'Let scientific conclusions be scientifically verified'. But, I
don't believe in what he expressed in-between these two phrases i.e. '...If
science and bible coincide on several points, I have nothing to object'.

When most believe that 'Bible is not scientific book' than why at all speak
of Bible and Science at the same breath as if Bible is science. I believe
Science and Bible are not the two sides of the SAME coin - subject wise and
expectation wise both are independent by itself and cannot be correlated by
any means.

And if at all, anyone attempts to correlate these two different subjects
directly or indirectly than that person will have to also understand that,
just as we expect that conclusions of science as to be verified before
accepting, the same way conclusions of bible will have also to be verified
to a point of acceptability! Otherwise atheists will get added opportunity
to say 'Bible is linked to Science. But conclusions in the Bible are not
verified like Science. And yet we are expected to accept the conclusions
expressed in the Bible'.

It's correlation, stupid!!

I feel duty bound to tell those who want to learn how science has already
explained life as a natural phenomenon, and answer genuine scientific
questions. I have nothing to say about an individual's personal faith-based
beliefs, and the contorted arguments he/she engages in to protect the sanctity
of those beliefs at any cost. Examples of such individualistic personal beliefs
and the tautological arguments offered to protect them are:

Because ‘Life’ is something beyond human comprehension, at least so far.
Which deduces that : Science cannot explain ‘Life’.
.Dr. dos Reis Falcão

Earlier this same author claimed that he could comprehend what life does.
Please see these quotes:

2. It is ‘Life’ that initiates all these physical and chemical
processes and not vice-versa.
.Dr. dos Reis Falcão

3. It is ‘Life’ that creates these chemicals within the cells and body
of the living substance.
.Dr. dos Reis Falcão

He also claimed that life was abstract, whatever the heck that means.

Please note that these beliefs are entirely personal and idiosyncratic, not
supported by any external rationale, evidence or research by genuinely
knowledgeable people in the field. Anybody can concoct their own meaning of the
word life, and claim that it is beyond human comprehension. They can claim that
life is a misty magical demon from the mysterious land of Oz that science will
never explain. Indeed, if you believe that life is a supernatural phenomenon,
then science will never care to provide you with an explanation. Why would you
even bother to look towards science for answers? This contention should become
clear further from the following statements of faith-based personal parochial
beliefs:

QUOTE
As we have seen, the scientific evidence confirms that “in the beginning, God
created [...] .” Life cannot come from nonlife; only God can create life. True
science and the Bible will always agree. Whether in biology, astronomy,
geology, or any other field of study, we can trust God’s Word to be accurate
when it speaks about these topics. Let us stand up for the truth of Genesis and
take back our culture.
UNQUOTE
.Fr. Ivo

QUOTE
A scientist believes in phenomenon and adamantly refuses to believe until ‘The
first cause’ or ‘God’ is proven as a fact.
UNQUOTE
.Charudatta Prabhudesai

It is clear to me that the authors quoted above do not really want science to
explain life, and would never trust science, even if I rubbed all the hard
scientific evidence in their faces, including creating the first artificial
living organism in the laboratory. So why bother?

But to others who might care to listen, let me point out that the three
rhetorical questions asked in a dismissive manner in the post appended below,
have already been answered. Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão simply does not have
that knowledge, apparently, and quite understandably, because he has not read
the relevant scientific literature.

The questions are embedded in the following quote:

QUOTE
What makes the living cells produce chemicals, what makes and regulates
physical structures, what makes genes to design cells in certain format. That
is what is the noun “LIFE” which no human or computer has explained.
UNQUOTE
.Dr. dos Reis Falcão

The answer to the first question is that living cells contain within them a
bootstrapped self-assembled molecular machinery performing in a step by step
manner complex chemical reactions to synthesize all the chemicals needed to
keep the cell functioning normally.

The answer to the second question is obvious. It is the complex macromolecular
chemicals synthesized in the above manner that make and regulate physical
structures by various processes involving self-assembly and self-organization.
This has been demonstrated in many different kinds of test tube and culture
dish experiments.

The answer to the third question is that genes carry molecular templates based
on a triplet code, for generating a huge diversity of protein molecules, which
can serve as structural as well as functional components in various specific
types of self-assembly processes that create the overall structure of each
cell. The repertoire of genes that are turned on or off in each cell is
triggered by various chemicals, both inside and outside the cell.

Cheers,

Santosh

I was actually flabbergasted to read Jose Almeida's message of 19.9.10.
When are Goans like him going to see themselves as Indians? Are they
waiting for another colonial power to deliver them from India! After
deliberation I think there is no use singling Goans out. Almost
everybody is a parochialist in India and all of them are busy preparing
to lead the country into utter chaos. A historical perspective will show
that we have in India at present exactly all the conditions prior to the
start of the revolution in China and we are on the way to the Indian
revolution and once it comes, it might take another fifty years like in
China to at least even very partially sound one's opinion on anything.
