2010-10-05 Thread Gabriel de Figueiredo
Wow! what a transformation! Congratulations to all involved. Thank you for the
photos, JoeGoaUK.

An observation, if I might make: there are plants growing at the base of the
"lions", which could weaken the pillar in the long term.

On the other hand, could some enterprising sculptor make a bust of Garcia
d'Orta
and replace the Ashoka emblem? The Ashoka emblem has got nothing to do with the
garden, and IMHO, its appropriate place would be the building that houses the
Goa Legislative Assembly.

Gabriel.

Re: [Goanet] Ontario-Maharashtra-Goa Student Exchange Program

2010-10-05 Thread Roland Mascarenhas
Hello Roland (great name!),

This is an interesting post considering I was close to becoming part of the
program in my final year of university as an undergraduate (logistic errors
prevented me from doing so). For those that are unaware about the program,
you can visit www.omgprogam.org. In your argument, you have stated several
reasons why students in Goa should consider being part of the exchange to
visit Ontario, but you have not provided compelling reasons why the opposite
should occur - Canadians going on exchange to see Goa. You do mention,
hoewever, that students "opt instead for reciprocal programs with European
and other better schools."

I believe the primary reason why the OMG program has not taken off is
because a lack of awareness and application to the appropriate demographic.
The OMG program was marketed several years and and its promotion campaign
needs a rejuvenation. Furthermore, in my personal opinion, an extremely
small proportion of Goans in its Diasporas can strongly consider the
program. Beyond the hefty tuition, flight, visa, and accomodation costs, a
minority of Goans are looking at occupations that are focusing on the need
for an exchange. International Relations, Public Policy, Business and
Financial Management are the top occupations where an international exchange
is strongly encouraged and in my personal experience, less then 1% of Goans
are interested in these fields. If they do look at exchanges, they are
looking at universities that tend to be English-speaking and are
internationally accredited (i.e University College London, Trinity College,
Bocconi University or if they're lucky Cambridge).

Blame it on Western bias, but Indian' colleges and universities are frowned
upon in the West, despite intense competition for spots and often an
orthodox British structure. These educational institutes should not take
heed, when is the last time you have heard a Westerner taking about
world-class universities such as Tokyo University, Australian National
University, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Universite Pierre et
Marie Curie, University of Copenhagen, Karolinska Institute, or Utrecht
University?

Thanks,

Roland

Dear Goanetters,

Does Lord Ganesh need raffles? Is it not encouraging speculation in the name of
God? Did Tilak, when he started sarvajanik ganeshotsav contemplate lotteries?
Is it morally right or ethical to lure people with cars to make big monies for
politician's chamchas? Or is it a much smaller crime compared to that of Digu &

Do you think this guy has any clue that peer reviewers of all reputed

[Goanet] Nuggets - QE II & You

2010-10-05 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Quantitative Easing or the printing of money is used when the normal
methods to control an economy have failed. Quantitative easing depreciates
the value of a currency (and all savings) while the country's economy receives
all the benefits of a weak currency i.e. imports become more expensive and
exports become more competitive.

The problem with this economic theory is that it will not work for a country
when a second or third country, and especially if these are competitors,
also introduce their own QE policy.

The first round of QE, started two years ago, resulted in the industrialized
countries competing to lower the value of their currency. The US alone
created 1.7 trillion, yes 1.7 TRILLION dollars out of thin air.

The people who felt the most pain from the QE policy were the savers.
They earned little or nothing on their savings.
The people who gained the most were those who held their assets in that
other currency, that which you cannot print more, namely gold.

A few days ago, the US announced a second round of printing money or QE II.
Japan replied yesterday. What is going to follow is another competition
on currency devaluation.

Gold will benefit again.

Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcao wrote:

I totally agree with Pe. Ivo and Gilbert and also that there is 'Scientific
illiteracy' in this forum as quoted. The discussion will not be rational and
also
not on the topic the writer tries to convey; obviously as all the critics who
presume to have knowledge go nit picking here. It is really regrettable as
instead of sharing knowledge on this Forum, netters are desisted from posting
facts that are worth the read.

--- GL responds:

Dr. Ferdinando, welcome to goanet, where your writings (above) regarding
science
is a breath of fresh air. For a long time it was "one-eyed man is a king among
the blind". So please do not tell the king that, "he has no clothes."
Not after
he spent more than a decade giving goanetters 'Scientific Literacy' - his
version.

So to state "there is 'Scientific illiteracy' in this forum" is blasphemy,
which
in 2010 will get you to the court of Scientific Inquisition.  As proof of this,
look at Santosh's response posted below.  He suggest, let's forget about Dr.
Hyman's article; and talk about something totally unconnected (Drs. David
Gorski's and Robert Burton's articles); ani tea bhair respond "with data and
references."  I am supposed to do this as 'pirachit' / punishment for
forwarding
a link to a very well written article - a.k.a. spreading subversive material on
science.

Spend your time enjoying the humor of America's and Goa's scientist.  But do
not
waste your time with pseudo-intellectual arguments from those whose knowledge
come from web-surfing and finessed with "Copy and Paste".

In USA, the pharmaceutical industry have bought the politicians, regulators and
now academic-scientific community. Now these companies take their message
directly to the public through TV advertisements.  Hence Dr. Hyman's and
similar
articles are on-spot; both challenging the medical establishment as well as
directly educating the public; who often demand the newest drug seen on TV.
Months later, patients and malpractice lawyers sue the pharmaceutical Co. for
side-effects and deaths.  Most in America have seen advertisements from lawyers
who request patients and families treated by these 'approved' drugs to call
toll-free "1-800-BAD-DRUG" for legal action.

Something that you likely already know. "Never argue with an idiot, they will
drag you down to their level, and defeat you with experience!"  Dilbert's rules
of order.

[Goanet] Are our Goa news-outlets off Target ........again?

2010-10-05 Thread J. Colaco < jc>
Dears,

At the end of the following nooj-item, one finds the following sentence:

"who had allegedly molested a minor girl from the village"

http://www.targetgoa.com/newsd-Can-any-police-constable-file-revision-plea-for-State-asks-Justice-Britto-1187

Considering that this so-called "case" was splashed all over the World
Wide Web courtesy repeated posts on Goanet by Adv Aires Rodrigues, I
wonder whether this (quoted) sentence isn't blatantly prejudicial
against the individual concerned.

This is not the first time that the media-outlet has been less than
diligent in its story related to this matter.

I ask: Is this so-called 'case' before the courts at the present time?

If NOT, why is this allegation persisting?

I suggest that, at best, this biased (IMHO) news-outlet could have
written: "who was alleged by Adv. Aires Rodrigues to have molested a
minor girl from the village" and then gone on to state .what
happened to that "case".

For someone (like yours truly) who works with abused children (albeit
voluntarily) this repeater gutter 'journalism is both disappointing
and disgusting. It is also counterproductive to the interests of the
children who are abused.

BTW: so is this Goa Children's Act http://www.colaco.net/1/gca2003.htm

I hope we all (who live in and visit Goa) realise that as per this
Act, anyone who dislikes another- can accuse that person of having
molested a child - AND the only way one can defend against this
allegation is to "prove that one did not do it".!

Oh yes, in the meantime, repeated articles will be written accusing a
person of a crime - without a single day in court Even 6 years or
60 years hence.

Brilliant, is it not?

2010-10-05 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

  J. COLACO < jc> said: Interesting discussion between a reputed Oncologist, a
brilliant Neuroscientist and a good Priest.
Two among them are definitely not quacks. J. COLACO < jc> said:
a: I know many priests (mainly Jesuit) who possess recognised qualifications
in the field of medicine.
These priests are not quacks. Quacks are quacks. Do I need to spell out the
meaning of the term "quacks"? b: Religion is a personal matter.
Anyone (including a doctor) can talk about religion or the absence of faith in
religion. c: Theology, on the other hand, is the area that many
priests have specialised in. It would be daft for a doctor to talk about
Theology unless he was also a priest like the Rev Drs. (Jesuits), I know.
RESPONSE: It is quite evident that jc has separated Theology and
religion; and who is entitled to discuss what.
If that is so may I ask what was the topic of discussion as evident from the
‘Subject’? Was is surgical procedures,
line of treatment, differential diagnoses, etc. which only medical doctors have
qualifications to discuss; or was it a topic for layman’s benefit that did not
necessitate qualification?
It is also evident from his previous post that one of the three is labeled as
‘quack’. That too, a sentence in the negative, which is a trait of negativism;
one of the sign of certain behavioural disorder. Was this labeling of a netter
as ‘Quack’ not an intimidation? jc response to this is obviously going to be
that he did not label any one, but only said that two of them are not.
It is very obvious that a couple of netters on Goanet are hell bent in trying
to tell the Forum that they have absolute knowledge in all branches of Science,
and will go to all extent, even by deviating from the main topic of discussion
to satisfy themselves that they have won the discussion.
When a learned person cannot conduct a discussion in a rational manner, it only
affirms the possibility of disorder. As some netter on this Forum had
said: “Never argue with an idiot, he will pull you down to his level, and then
win the argument at his level.”

[Goanet] Press Conference of MNE at Mapusa on 1 October, 2010 p.m.

2010-10-05 Thread Peter Fernandes
I love the manifesto of the MNE as detailed by Floriano on the Goanet.
They have covered most of the immediate requirements of our lovely Mapusa. The
most important item which has not received their attention is the improvement
in the Mapusa Fish Market as there in no mention of it anywhere.  Can this
market be demolished/rebuilt to bring it up to some quality and sanitation
standards?  During the past rainy season one had to walk in the fish
market with umbrellas or raincoats because the market was open to the sky from
the top as it did not have a covered roof   Whilst walking you had to
almost swim to check which fish to buy and from whom to buy as the floor was in
such a terrible condition with broken tiles and puddles.  The state of
this market is so pathetic with the water puddles, open to sky, broken
flooring, rotten fish on the floor,  spitting around, etc.
I would request the new MNE to kindly come up with a plan for a decent place
for the fish vendors and vegetable vendors so that the general public can use
these clean facilities in our Mapusa Market . I had an opportunity to visit the
Panjim vegetable market.  The place seems to be quite clean now with all
the vendors sitting on raised level and doing their daily business, although
the fish market in Panjim still needs a lot of improvement.  Compared to
Panjim market, the fish and vegetable markets in Mapusa are in a pathetic
condition at the moment.  The roads around and to the markets are also in
same pathetic conditions.  Our only request to the new MNE or whosoever
wins the coming Municipal elections, PLEASE for the sake of all Mapsenkars,
Bardezkars and Goans in general who visit Mapusa market, improve the basic
necessities in the Mapusa Market and God will shower his blessings on you all

of the Konkani (tiatr) “Soglleank Nomoskar” at the Al Ghazal Club in
Doha Qatar.

“There are times when people are in dire straits and do not know where
to knock for help. The club will set aside an amount for this
purpose, it is our desire to also get the community involved in such
humanitarian task and we will continue to conduct events to support
this cause,” said the DGSC in their press release.

“After deep introspection, and considering many difficulties and
problems faced by our Goan brethren in the past, Doha Goans Sports
Club came forward to introduce a special and completely separate fund
i.e. " benevolent fund" to help all needy Goans which will be decided
case by case i.e. solely those facing problems specially at the time
of deportation, need of costly medicines/operation and those who
really cannot afford etc,” the press note adds.

On the occasion, the 19-members troupe which arrived from Goa
performed meticulously and displayed enormous skills of superb acting
and singing accompanied by colossal humour and comedy with a moral,
all of which kept the 800-odd Konkani loving spectators spell bound
during the 4-hours entertainment program.

The program which was selected and executed by the club’s P.R.O. &
director of Cultural & Social Affairs, Mauricio Pereira, along with
the club’s Committee Members, commenced with the unveiling of the
club’s banner with logo by Rev. Fr. Anand Castelino who was also the
chief guest. That was a touching moment for many Goan residents who
well remembered the good old times when the club had excelled in
conducting various Social, Cultural and Sports events. Fr. Anand
spoke on the need to preserve love and unity in the community and
underlined the importance of keeping alive the Konkani language.
The President, Ambrosio Dias, in his welcome address briefly explained
the need of reviving DGSC which, under circumstances, was forced into
silent mode and lamented over the deprivation of the Goan Community of
leisure diversions since 2003.
During the show prizes to lucky winners were distributed and the club
also announced future Social, Cultural and Sports events.
The very fact that the spectators were still sitting when the final
curtain went down only spoke of the total enjoyment of the show
organized by DGSC.
The Konkani tiatr was the first major activity for DGSC which was revived
three months back.
The next evetn is slated for October 15, wherein an Inter-village football
tournament will be held.

[Goanet] Write up for UGC 35th tournamnet edition held in Kuwait

2010-10-05 Thread Joseph Gonsalves
*U.G.C 35th Soccer Tourney*

The second week of matches of the 35th edition of the United Goans Centre
rolling trophy tournament was played on October 1st 2010. The tournament was
played under the auspices of the Kuwait Indian Football Federation at the
Shuwaikh fire brigade stadium.

The first match began at 7:15 am between Rawda Boys S.C. and Rising Stars.
The match started at a fast pace with both teams failing to capitalize on
early chances in the first ten minutes. Rising stars started to pass the
ball nicely among them and were moving the ball to all areas of the ground
creating for themselves a lot of attacking chances. Both the teams had a
freekick in the first twenty minutes with Rawda boys just placing it above
the bar and soon it would be Rising Stars chance, the goal keeper produced a
great save to keep the ball out with his fingertips.

Rising Stars continued to add pressure and were rewarded with Fajula scoring
from a nice pass from Sahfiq. To make it 1-0. Within minutes Rising stars
were attacking again and scored a second from mohammed shafiq. Mohamed
Shafiq beat the keeper and his marker with his header to make it 3-0 at the
end of the first half.

The second half began at 7:55 and rising stars wasted no time in attacking.
Fajula shot from inside the Dee forced the keeper to make a good save to
keep the ball out of the net. Rwada challengers created a nice chance when
their striker was one on one with the keeper but he failed to slot one in to
cut the deficit. The rising stars keeper made a crucial save to make sure
there would be no surprises to come in this match. Towards the end of the
first half No.10 Fajilu scored his second goal of the match from a nice
through ball. The rising stars were able to keep a clean sheet and win the
match with a score of 4-0. The match was refereed by KIFF subcommittee by
Edward/Nazareth/Joe.

Rising Stars 4 Rwada Boys S.C 0

The second match started at 8:35 am where Goa Maroons were taking on
Curtocares. Both teams started the game with equal procession and the ball
was moved around midfield a lot and both teams found it tough to launch an
attack. The defenses of both the teams were doing a good job in dealing with
all kinds of attacks. The first goal was provide by Ian Dsouza who did a
good job to stop the attack and then provided the ball Kennedy who made no
mistake in providing the lead to make it 1-0.

Goa Maroons steeped up the pace after the first goal and continued
attacking towards Curtocares goal. Their keeper made some good saves to deny
Maroons from scoring again. However No.9 Steven was providing some good
balls from the midfield to the strikers and he provided a good ball to
Kennedy who made no mistake to make it 2-0 in the first half.

The second half started at 9:20am with Curtocares creating more chances for
themselves, but their lack of failing to finish failed to get them on the
scorecard. No.7 Minguel Moyro was inside the Goa Maroons half and took a
shot from an acute angle to score to make 2-1. With fifteen minutes left to
play, Curtocares were looking for their second goal and they were nearly
gifted a chance when a back pass fell to the feet of the striker of
Curtocares but he failed to find the back of the net. The match finished
with the score line 2-1 and Goa Maroons moves on to the next round to face
either K.G.A or United Goans in the quarterfinals. The match was refereed by
KIFF subcommittee by John/Edward/Rosario

Goa Maroons 2 – Curtocares United 1
Next Friday October 8th, there will be three matches 6:30am Rising Stars Vs
United Friends,
8:00 am KGA against host UGC and Rangers Vs DHL sports club at 9:30am.

The above video shows the sad plight of simple poor Goans who have been duped
and taken for a ride by the builder in Vanxim with collaboration from
shockingly the Church.

I liked the best comments in the video from Devidas Gaonkar reporting for
IndiaUnheard from Tiswade taluka, Goa given below.

"""EVERY GOAN SHOULD NEVER HIS LAND TO ANYONE FOR MONEY. MONEY WILL RUNT OUT
BUT LAND WILL SUSTAIN US FOROVER. IF LAND IN GOA KEEPS SELLING LIKE THIS, ONE
DAY ENTIRE STATE WILL BE SOLD OUT."""

I hope his honest comments make every Goan vow that no matter what never
sell your land. Honestly this is not easy with today's temptations of
fabulous prices and often the infighting among families for property. How
very true. If Goans have to survive then we have to sincerely reflect on his
comments.

[Goanet] Goan Lenny Gama in the news -- CGames: Scales of injustice create boxing farce

2010-10-05 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
NEW DELHI

The official weigh-in at the Commonwealth Games boxing competition was
abandoned on Monday after faulty scales showed most of the fighters
were too heavy.

Irate coaches demanded the scales be checked after some boxers tried
to sweat off weight by using saunas or going for runs only to return
and weigh more than before.

"It is a farce, but there is not a lot more we can do, I have never
seen this before," Australia's assistant boxing coach Don Abnett told
Australian Associated Press.

Northern Ireland coach Stephen Friel added that the incident was unprecedented.

"The whole place was in uproar," said Friel. "All of the coaches here
said they had never seen anything like it."

Competition manager Lenni Gama initially tried to brush the issue
under the carpet, saying: "The scales are perfect".

But Gama eventually relented with the weigh-in now set for Tuesday
morning, just ahead of the opening bouts, once the scales are
recalibrated.

It was the latest crisis at the troubled Games, which have been dogged
by worries over threats of terror attacks, corruption, construction
delays, and outbreaks of dengue fever.

CLOSURE?

The Allahabad High Court verdict on the Ayodhya title suit has made the
vandals of 1992 into victors of 2010. Can this long dispute ever end?

Manoj Mitta | TNN

Three days after a Ram idol was placed under the Babri Masjid’s central
dome, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru shot off a letter to UP chief minister
G B Pant directing that the mischief be undone. His reason: “A dangerous
example is being set there, which will have bad consequences.”

But Nehru’s concerns were overridden by the local administrator,
Faizabad’s deputy commissioner K K Nayar. Even as he acknowledged that the
installation of the idols was “an illegal act”, Nayar refused to remove them
from the mosque. His reasoning was that “the depth of feeling behind the
movement … should not be underestimated.”

It was against the backdrop of this battle between secular and sectarian
views that the first of the four title suits was filed on January 16, 1950.
In allowing the idols to remain where they were placed on December 23, 1949,
and in placing religious sentiment above the rule of law, the Allahabad high
court verdict 60 years later seems to have preferred Nayar’s position to
that of Nehru.

Though thousands of pages in this verdict have been devoted to quotes
from Hindu scriptures, it made little effort to examine the illegality of
the 1949 act. The mischief played with the idols, in a bid to convert a
masjid into a mandir, was central to the adjudication of the title suits.

Yet, the three judges on the bench, despite delivering separate
judgments, adopted the common approach of treating the forcible installation
of idols as a fait accompli. They did not dare question its legality or
validity. This, despite the fact that the bench had, in May 2009, specially
called for and placed on record the original file of the district
administration that dealt with the 1949 episode.

The verdict could have been radically different had the judges mustered
the courage to analyse this crucial issue. Advocate Anupam Gupta, who
grilled an array of leaders on the Babri Masjid demolition before the
Liberhan Commission, told TOI: “Since the title suits had derived from the
installation of idols, the judges would have had to acknowledge that the
Hindu claim was based on a patent illegality and that nothing said about the
history of the Hindu belief prior to 1949 would have cured this illegality.”

In its anxiety to be pragmatic or conciliatory, the high court also
pulled its punches on the demolition of the mosque in 1992 although it was a
violent interference with the subject of the title suits. While it dwelt
extensively on the Hindu “bent of mind” in the context of the belief about
the exact location of Ram’s birthplace, the high court did not attempt any
such analysis of the mentality that propelled the demolition.

As a result, in a major blow to secularism, the high court allowed the
vandals of 1992 to turn into the victors of 2010. This has made a mockery of
the Supreme Court's 1994 declaration while reviving the Ayodhya title suits
after a two-year limbo: “The Hindu community must bear the cross on its
chest, for the misdeed of the miscreants reasonably suspected to belong to
their religious fold.”

Far from bearing the cross for the demolition, Hindu groups seem to have
intimidated the high court into coming up with a solution that provides much
cause for concern to Muslims and believers of secularism. By accepting faith
as the determining factor for allotting the area under the central dome to
Hindus, the system has shown no remorse to the affected community.

The high court’s refusal to let the illegality of the 1949 and 1992
events have a bearing on the title suits will mean that there can be no
closure to the Ayodhya dispute any time soon. Its partition scheme has ended
up vindicating, however unwittingly, those very forces that had so brazenly
undermined India’s commitment to secularism. As jurist Tahir Mahmood puts
it, “What had begun as a title suit ended up with a decree of partition.
Religious beliefs and sentiments had triumphed over historical facts and
legal precepts. The judicial anxiety reflected in the judgment is
understandable but its legal tenability is not beyond reproach.”

The consolation is that the verdict could have been worse if the judgment
delivered by Justice D V Sharma, awarding the entire disputed site of 2.7
acres to Hindus, did not turn out to be a minority view on the bench.
Sharma’s judgment is an unabashed celebration of the fundamentalist Hindu
perspective on the Babri Masjid.

The Ayodhya verdict actually fits into a pattern displayed by the Indian
judiciary to suppress inconvenient facts. The Allahabad high court’s failure
to examine the implications of the 1949 and 1992 events is reminiscent of an
infamous omission by the Supreme Court in its much touted judgment upholding

[Goanet] India and China

India will soon start to outpace China: EconomistIANS, Oct 5, 2010, 01.07pm IST
WASHINGTON: India will soon start to outpace China, thanks to a young and
growing workforce and its "much-derided democracy" says The Economist.

The cover story on "How India's growth will outpace China's" in its latest
issue attributes "India's surprising economic miracle" largely to its private
sector saying, "the country's state may be weak, but its private companies are
strong."

Despite the poor headlines generated in the run up to the Commonwealth games,
"India is doing rather well," the internationally regarded magazine said
noting, "Its economy is expected to expand by 8.5 percent this year."

"It has a long way to go before it is as rich as China - the Chinese economy
is four times bigger- but its growth rate could overtake China's by 2013, if
not before.

"Some economists think India will grow faster than any other large country
over
the next 25 years. Rapid growth in a country of 1.2 billion people is
exciting,
to put it mildly," it said.

Citing demography as one of the two reasons why India will soon start to
outpace China, the magazine noted "China's workforce will shortly start
ageing;
in a few years' time, it will start shrinking."

"That's because of its one-child policy - an oppressive measure that no Indian
government would get away with."

"India is now blessed with a young and growing workforce. Its dependency ratio
- the proportion of children and old people to working-age adults - is one of
the best in the world and will remain so for a generation," it said.

India's economy will benefit from this "demographic dividend", which has
powered many of Asia's economic miracles.

"The second reason for optimism is India's much-derided democracy," said The
Economist noting, "Indian capitalism is driven by millions of entrepreneurs all
furiously doing their own thing.

"Since the early 1990s, when India dismantled the "licence raj" and opened up
to foreign trade, Indian business has boomed."

"Ideas flow easily around India, since it lacks China's culture of secrecy and
censorship. That, plus China's rampant piracy, is why knowledge-based
industries such as software love India but shun the Middle Kingdom,"

"Given the choice between doing business in China or India, most foreign
investors would probably pick China, The Economist said.

4 Oct: Video Volunteers. Unholy nexus between a church and a real estate
developer threatens to make hundreds homeless in Vanxim -- an island on
Goa's Mandovi River where the local church has sold off an entire island to
a builder who wants to build a 5 star hotel on it. The planned hotel project
will leave 78 families that live on the island without a home, as well as
cause serious environmental degradation to the whole island...3m. 13s. at

[Goanet] India cannot help but be complex

2010-10-05 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Folks,
For those of you who missed it, here is an article that was part of a
special The Toronto Star did for the opening of the Commonwealth
games. Haroon Siddiqui is the most popluar journalist in Canada.
Mervyn1315Lobo
--

By Haroon Siddiqui
Editorial Page
The Toronto Star

Arriving in Canada in 1967, I was swept up by the Centennial, especially Expo,
but was soon distressed to discover that there was no yogurt, only something
called sour cream, a blob that bloated your tummy. There were few fresh green
vegetables and no mangoes. No basmati rice. No coriander, cloves or cardamom.
Nor saffron, which few had heard of and said it could be procured, perhaps,
around Easter for the seasonal bread.

Informed of this state of affairs, mom in India said: “In that case, son, you
had better come back home.”

I am glad I stayed.
At the time, Canadians thought of India as the land of starving people and
emaciated holy cows. Now the two countries can't get enough of each other,
Canada needing India more than India needing Canada. Which is why the Star is
exploring India in every section of the paper today.

India, an emerging economic and geopolitical giant, might overtake China
economically within two decades. Wooed by the world, it does need Canadian
natural resources as well as capital and expertise for infrastructure.

Canada — besides recruiting skilled Indians as immigrants and using India for
outsourced call centres — is keen to tap into India's booming $1.3 trillion
economy (about the same as Canada's).
Canadian politicians and corporate leaders, who never used to return a phone
call from India, now go on pilgrimages there and attend Indo-Canadian events to
troll for votes and business.

Yet India can still unnerve Canadians, as during two current crises — the
Commonwealth Games, where accommodation for athletes in New Delhi was deemed
unfit for human habitation; and the scary spectre of Hindu-Muslim bloodletting
over a 16th century mosque following a court decision Thursday in the
decades-long dispute.

But to me, all this sounds normal. India is forever in a crisis — and is not.
Whatever is true of India, the exact opposite is almost always also true:
Efficiency and chaos. Secularism and sectarianism. Wealth and poverty. Hope and
despondency. Gandhian non-violence and murderous frenzy. Humanity and cruelty.
Exploitation and generosity. Piety and prostitution. Dedicated indigenous NGOs
and corrupt politics.

That's India.

In fact, India is many Indias, where the good far outweighs the bad.
India cannot but be complex — an ancient civilization leapfrogging from British
colonized penury to new economic heights, and slowly shedding centuries-old
caste-based hierarchy for a culture of Bollywood, cricket and corporate
celebrity.

India is relevant to Canada.
Our manufacturing base is denuded, especially in Ontario. The American economy,
on which we've been overly dependant, will likely be in doldrums for years.

Canada can no longer postpone finding new markets — in Europe and,
increasingly,

China and particularly India.

Go East, young man, says Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank of Canada,
noting

the shift in the centre of gravity from the West back to the East.
Until the early 19th century, China and India controlled half the world's
economy, even if that fact has been obliterated from Western conscience. Today,
China and India are simply going back to the future.
China, with a 2009 GDP of almost $5 trillion, recently passed Japan as the
world's second largest economy on a quarterly basis. India's is projected to
overtake China's in the foreseeable future.

Whereas China's economic growth comes mostly from exports, India's emanates
from

domestic consumption. That's why it weathered the world economic meltdown. This
year, its economy is growing at thrice the rate of Canada's.
India has been doubling per capita income every 10 years — something Canada
used

to do but doesn't any longer. Our children face the prospect of earning less
than us.

India is reaping a “demographic dividend.” Half its 1.2 billion people are
under

25. In the next 10 years, it will produce between 80 million and 110 million
new

workers. China's population, like Canada's, is aging. India's population will
overtake China's.

India is democratic. Its entrepreneurial drive comes from the private sector,
not the state or state-owned enterprises.

While Canada's trade with the U.S. is suffering, India's with America, albeit
comparatively small, is growing, to $60 billion a year. So is India's trade
with

China, approaching $50 billion.

But Canada's trade with India is just $5 billion. We have our work cut out for
us.
Not all is hunky-dory in India.
It has the world's largest number of poor. About 600 million survive on less
than $2 a day. About 65 million live in slums. About 1.
