[Goanet] Health and Hygiene in Goa after 2000
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- To Goanet - I had written a couple of rejoinders past week but didn't get around to posting them. So, here is the first one before I return once again to my no-read post-only mode. The standards of public hygiene in what are today considered clean and hygiene-conscious countries of Europe and the West were sordid in the past. You can read an entertaining account of the history of Western hygiene in the book The Dirt on Clean - An Unsanitized History. There are several other resources on this topic that a Google search will reveal. Alas, most Indians do not know of the earlier filthy habits of the white man (the times of King Louis XIV, for instance, make for fun reading). If only they had this knowledge they could put it to good use and justify India's CURRENT squalor by pointing to the West's filthy PAST. I mean, what would the Indian not give to find an excuse to abdicate responsibility and exonerate his own super virtuous culture, eh? Excuses, Indians have a countles supply. Responsibility? No, sir, not part of Indian culture. Hum Hindustani. The excuse in currency has it that the public squalor, urination, defecation etc in India is entirely a result of poverty, since poor people have no access to sanitation infrastructure. Partly true, but mostly bullcrap. But it makes for a nice screen to hide behind for the Indian. You point out that rich housewives in Mumbai are known to offload garbage from their plush Breach Candy apartments onto the streets below. We all know what happens at this point in the conversation - chai and samosas arrive. Then the old chestnut about ghatis in Panjim having nowhere else to relieve themselves. The shouchalaya is within earshot but the guy won't step in there. The Indian excuse is that the guy finds the fee too high. So as an experiment you give him the 2 rupees entrance fee. What we find is that the guy continues to evacuate outdoors and save the 2 bucks for his gutka fix. Why stink up the shouchalaya when it is so beautiful outside, with swaying palms, soft sandy beaches etc? The desi social scientists and custodians of 'Indian culture' no doubt have an excuse for this, too. And let me guess - it is the Goans who should assume the blame for not anticipating the bowel movement needs of the Patna Express crowd. Finally, I leave you with this sequence - http://www.parrikar.org/images/ghatification/slides/panjim-06.html http://www.parrikar.org/images/ghatification/slides/panjim-07.html http://www.parrikar.org/images/ghatification/slides/panjim-08.html What these images reveal is that Goans are literally eating piss faeces with their fish. These images were was shown my me to the High Court, to the Goan newspaper-wallahs, to several eminences in the city, and posted here as well. And the result? NOTHING. NADA. NOUGHT. To those who refer us to books by Goa historians and the unhygienic conditions in Goa from 1510 to 1961, I'd say the following: a: That is a 450 year spread. [Goanet] God and You
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- Roman Catholics have a feeling of superiority. They always believe that theirs is the true religion founded by Christ and that we are all saved. Apart from hearing masses, and saying rosaries and attending feasts which are stereotype what do we have to say we are the children of God ? Nothing. John was from labour class. He lived in an ouNow tthouse of one rich catholic widow and did all her work. He lived with his wife and three children. None of the members ever went to school. John's mother looked after the kitchen when all the five family members went to work. They did not know to pray either and sometimes they had to work on sundays so going for mass was impossible. Many devout catholics made him work on sundays and paid him less because poor John did not know much of money matters. He had no savings and the day there was no work there was no food. It was Good friday. People were rushing to the church. John was busy breaking an old tree of a pious religious lady in her b ack yard. He was not even aware that it was Good friday. Just then someone rebuked him and shouted at him for not going to church. It was the day of penance and fasting. You have to go to church shouted the good old lady. Poor John felt hurt that he was not attending the church and left his work rushed home and wore a crumpled old shirt and made his way to the church. Everyone's gaze was on his crumpled shirt. Some one next to him caught his hand and asked him whether he could not iron his shirt. It was in the month of October. John was sitting outside his house . His mother was critically ill in Govt. hospital and he could not go to work .Two members of his family had to remain in the hospital. A couple came to his door and wanted to speak about christ. John got irritated and said Christ is for those whose stomach has its fill not for poor John who has not been able to get food because there is no work. What will I do with your sermon on Christ ? I want money. The husba nd opened his purse and gave him some dole and went away promissing to come again. Next day a team of helpers descended at his house. They were a group of protestants. They promised to send his children to school and promised to give John a decent job. John's children went to school. John and his wife got a job on monthly salary with free food at their centre. John and his family were free on sundays and attended Praise and worship. His clothes were now different, his looks were now different. His family was very happy. Some of the catholics around his house came to know that John had become a believer and they went to his house. They fired him for joining that group. You will be condemned to hell . You will not get your last sacraments. save your soul John. This time John really got angry. He stood straight and put his chest out and said. Did you know that John really existed on this soil ? [Goanet] LAW COMMISISON CHAIRMAN’S VEHICLE CRU ISED 42, 652 KMS
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- The Honda City official vehicle GA – 03-G – assigned to the Chairman of the Goa Law Commission Mr. Ramakant Khalap traveled 42,652 kms for the period from 30th April 2009 to 26th November 2010. The other vehicle assigned to the office of Law Commission traveled 15,819 kms for the period from 5th May 2009 to 26th November 2010. This has been revealed in the information furnished to me by the Law department under the Right to Information Act. The fuel and servicing charges of these two vehicles has cost the Goa government Rs 2,54,699. Goa Government spent Rs 1,47,384 on the trips made outside Goa by Chairman of Law Commission Mr. Ramakant Khalap from September 2009 to June 2010. This includes four trips to Delhi, two to Mumbai and one to Pune. Of the four trips to Delhi two were via Mumbai. The Chairman of the Law Commission by virtue of the cabinet rank given to him appointed eight personal staff. The salary of these staff along with Law Commission Chairman Mr. Ramakant Khalap’s salary has cost the tax payer Rs 26,99,596 The Law department has also informed that a further Rs 6,60,350 was spent by way of office expenses incurred by the Goa Law Commission. In addition to this a total of Rs 4,41,000 was paid to the two commission members Adv. Cleofato Coutinho and Adv. Mario Pinto Almeida by way of sitting fees. It has to be ascertained how much of the 42,652 kms run by Mr. Ramakant Khalap’s car was related to his political work and to his work as Chairman of the Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank of Goa. Regarding Mr. Ramakant Khalap’s trips to Mumbai and Delhi, it has to be seen whether any of these trips and other expenses incurred by the Commission were in connection with the formation of the private trust “Goa Organisation for Law Finance and Education” for the setting up an international Arbitration centre in Goa. These activities being beyond the mandate of the Goa Law Commission, all the expenditure and any other that is not related to the Law Commission agenda should be recovered by the Goa Government from Mr. Ramakant Khalap. Rs 6,60,350 spent by way of office expenses is very high given that the Law Commission has had no rent to pay as it was functioning in government premises. The entire expenses of Rs 42, 03, 029 incurred on the Goa Law Commission for the period from April 2009 to November 2010 needs to be probed. Let us pray for our families for families make the world. For our religious saying masses and celebrating feast will not bring salvation to humanity. Jesus never said mass. he never told us to say rosary. Mary never told us that she is the mother of God for God cannot have a mother and if he does then he is not god. Mary was not a preacher. she spoke very little but her action had meaning. She did just one thing. She gave us Jesus .That was her mission. She followed just two things. One was to do the will of God and the second was to show concern for others. Today the so called Roman catholics along with their religious sections do not do the will of God nor have any concern for others. For the married God spoke to us in Genesis. Increase and multiple and fill the world. if that is so why family planning for us ? Regarding concern for others there is no love existing on earth today. The church cares for the poor only during christmas when they suddenly think of the crib and christmas. Do they do anything for the poor ? there are various kinds of poor. some without money and others without love and help. If we were true christians why do many people live under a roof which is open. Did Gaonkari system exist in Damao Diu? or even in the islands of Bombay before they were handed over to the Brits? Did it exist in the neighbouring Sawantwadi and Karwar in the 16th century? I think the Gaonkari system was unique to Goa, and it was expanded upon and codified by the successive Portuguese governments, when they saw it was a good thing. It would be interesting to see the results of any serious research on the topic to check if this system was exported to other parts of Portuguese influence. I did not know that the parasite was named after the party. Here is what I found in The Tribune, (agriculture tribune) : Parthenium hysterophorus, popularly known as Congress grass, is a weed that has caused grave concern. It not only threatens our agriculture, but also human and animal health. Parthenium reproduces mainly through seeds. It has a prolific seeding ability (3000-5000/plant). Maximum germination occurs from August to October, although it grows almost throughout the year. The most favorable period of its growth in the North is from July to October, when it attains maximum biomass. When the temperature starts rising in March-April, a fresh flush of this weed emerges and continues to appear till September-October. It has crown buds, which can give rise to several new shoots when the plant is removed. One of the measures to check this weed is that no chance should be given to it to flower and set seed. Parthenium infestation in sugarcane and rice has been noticed. This weed is a major threat to agricultural productivity because of its allelopathic effect (the inhibition of growth in one species of plants by chemicals produced by another species). Control For effective control of this weed awareness should be created regarding its harmful effects and life cycle. Parthenium can be suppressed by employing mechanical methods, bio-control agents and herbicides. Biological control: Cassia tora, Cassia uniflora, Cassia sericea, Croton spaarsiflorus and Tephrosea purpurea are competitive displacement plants for suppressing parthenium. Broadcasting stylo in parthenium brings about good control. Replacement can be faster if parthenium plants are pulled out in the initial stages of the competition. Mycoplasma-like organisms (MLO) could be utilised as they cause seed sterility. Zygogramma bicolorata, a leaf-feeding beetle, is also found promising, but its adult also attacks sunflower. Mechanical control: Manual uprooting of parthenium at the appropriate time is very important. In gardens or orchards the weed should be ploughed in before seed set. Repeated mowing in lawns and playgrounds is also useful. While uprooting this weed manually, direct contact should be avoided by wearing gloves. Chemical control: Owing to the high labour cost and health problems in direct contact, chemical control is a cheaper and safe alternative. In addition, herbicides prevent both re-growth and regeneration for a reasonable period. The use of herbicides in succession provides good control. Possible herbicides for this weed are: glyphosate 1.0% solution (Roundup or Glycel @ 24 ml in 1 litre of water); and metribuzin (Sencor 70% WP) @ 1.0 kg/ha. Although metribuzin provides effective control, its residue remains in the soil for a long time. Where crops are to be grown, glyphosate should be used. We can improve the efficacy of these herbicides by using low-volume spray nozzles and 0.1% adjuvant or surfactant (Treton, Teepol, Selwet, etc.) mixed in the herbicide solutions. This helps in reducing the dose of herbicide. Atrazin, 2,4-D and paraquat @ 3.0 litre/10,000 m2 before flowering also provides control. For complete control, exhaust the soil seed bank, for which continued control measures for three or four consecutive years are required. You might put the blame of India's general uncleanliness squarely on the British ... or then again, you may not (other countries in this modern world were also under the British at one time or another, yet they are not so filthy today as the nuclear-age India is). excerpts from http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Third_Class_in_Indian_Railways On the 12th instant I booked at Bombay for Madras by the mail train and paid Rs. 13-9. It was labelled to carry 22 passengers. These could only have seating accommodation. There were no bunks in this carriage whereon passengers could lie with any degree of safety or comfort. There were two nights to be passed in this train before reaching Madras. If not more than 22 passengers found their way into my carriage before we reached Poona, it was because the bolder ones kept the others at bay. With the exception of two or three insistent passengers, all had to find their sleep being seated all the time. After reaching Raichur the pressure became unbearable. The rush of passengers could not be stayed. The fighters among us found the task almost beyond them. The guards or other railway servants came in only to push in more passengers. ... On the way passengers got for tea tannin water with filthy sugar and a whitish looking liquid mis-called milk which gave this water a muddy appearance. I can vouch for the appearance, but I cite the testimony of the passengers as to the taste. Not during the whole of the journey was the compartment once swept or cleaned. The result was that every time you walked on the floor or rather cut your way through the passengers seated on the floor, you waded through dirt. The closet was also not cleaned during the journey and there was no water in the water tank. Refreshments sold to the passengers were dirty-looking, handed by dirtier hands, coming out of filthy receptacles and weighed in equally unattractive scales. These were previously sampled by millions of flies. I asked some of the passengers who went in for these dainties to give their opinion. Many of them used choice expressions as to the quality but were satisfied to state that they were helpless in the matter; they had to take things as they came. ... To this compartment there was a closet falsely so called. It was designed as a European closet but could hardly be used as such. There was a pipe in it but no water, and I say without fear of challenge that it was pestilentially dirty. The compartment itself was evil looking. Dirt was lying thick upon the wood work and I do not know that it had ever seen soap or water. ... The compartment had an exceptional assortment of passengers. There were three stalwart Punjabi Mahomedans, two refined Tamilians and two Mahomedan merchants who joined us later. The merchants related the bribes they had to give to procure comfort. One of the Punjabis had already travelled three nights and was weary and fatigued. But he could not stretch himself. He said he had sat the whole day at the Central Station watching passengers giving bribe to procure their tickets. Another said he had himself to pay Rs. 5 before he could get his ticket and his seat. These three men were bound for Ludhiana and had still more nights of travel in store for them. What I have described is not exceptional but normal. I have got down at Raichur, Dhond, Sonepur, Chakradharpur, Purulia, Asansol and other junction stations and been at the 'Mosafirkhanas' attached to these stations. They are discreditable-looking places where there is no order, no cleanliness but utter confusion and horrible din and noise. Passengers have no benches or not enough to sit on. They squat on dirty floors and eat dirty food. They are permitted to throw the leavings of their food and spit where they like, sit how they like and smoke everywhere. The closets attached to these places defy description. I have not the power adequately to describe them without committing a breach of the laws of decent speech. Disinfecting powder, ashes, or disinfecting fluids are unknown. ... At Sonepur flies having failed, wasps have come forth to warn the public and the authorities, but yet to no purpose. At the Imperial Capital a certain third class booking-office is a Black-Hole fit only to be destroyed. Is it any wonder that

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Baptism of the Lord
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- 2-Jan-2011 Dear Friend, As we end the Christmas season we are reminded immediately of the purpose of His coming into this world. His baptism and our own should remind us that we are all one family of God, well-beloved children of the Father and brothers and sisters in the Lord. We cannot call God our Father unless we live as His children and relate to each other as members of God’s family. We have the privilege but also the responsibility! We can only live with each other if we live for one another. Have a blessed weekend relishing the privilege of being His beloved! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: ‘Baptism of the Lord – ‘Affirmed as Beloved of the Lord!’ 9-Jan-2011 Isaiah 42: 1-4, 6-7; Acts 10: 34-38; Matthew 3: 13-17; In the first reading the prophet encourages the Jewish exiles in Babylon not to give up hope. He promised that the servant of Yahweh will bring forth justice to the nations. The servant whom the Lord upholds will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice on the earth. Isaiah goes on to say that this servant of whom he speaks is Israel itself. “I have called you to righteousness... a light to the nations, to bring people out of the dungeons to freedom. Are we hopeful of fulfilling the mission given to us? Hope Keeps Us Going King Corsoe met an old peasant who was planting a palm tree. Seeing this he asked in surprise, “Old man, do you hope to eat the dates from this tree?” Why, when the dates have grown, you will long since be dead!” “O King,” the peasant said, “How we eat what others have planted. I plant for those who come after me.” The king was struck by the reply and rewarded the peasant with gold coins for his wisdom.” The peasant then said, “O King, see how the palm tree has already produced fruits.” Again the King was struck with the peasant’s words and rewarded him this time with a thousand gold coins. J. Maurus in ‘A Source-Book of Inspiration’ In today’s gospel we read of Jesus coming to the Jordan to be baptized by John. Jesus lines up with the people to be baptized. The baptism of John was a baptism of repentance for sinners and Jesus shows his solidarity with sinners in seeking to be baptized, though he was the sinless one. John protests: “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?” But Jesus replies, “Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness.” We see Jesus humbly accepting the consequences of being one with the human race. Jesus enters the river of life to associate with all sinners and set them at rights with God. As soon as Jesus was baptized he came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. The image of the heavens opening is used in scripture to tell us that communication is established between the heavenly world and mankind. This is reaffirmed by the appearance of the dove, a symbol of the Spirit of God hovering over him; the Spirit that gives power and life. Lastly we have the voice from heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew wishes to stress that this moment is important not only for Jesus but for us all. Matthew writes as if all are to hear those words from heaven. What is said of Jesus that day is to be echoed in every Christian baptism. By Baptism we are all made children of God and God is pleased with us and his favour rests on us. Identifying With Outcasts When leprosy broke out among the people of the Hawaiian Islands in the middle of the last century, the authorities responded by establishing a leper colony on the remote island of Molokai. The victims were snatched by force from their families and sent to this island to perish. However, moved by their terrible plight, a young Belgian priest, Damien De Veuster, asked to be allowed to minister to them. Straightaway he realised that there was only one effective way to do this: that was to go and live among them. Having got permission, he went to Molokai. At first, he tried to minister to them while maintaining a certain distance. But he soon realised that he had to live among them in order to gain their trust. As a result he contracted leprosy himself. The reaction of the lepers was immediate and wholehearted. They embraced him and took him to their hearts. He was now one of them. But I cannot excuse a medical graduate for his ignorance. To rely on Health Hygiene history in Goa on Ms. Fatima da Silva Gracias, who is not a medical person herself, but a daughter of late Dr. Transfiguração da Silva, is akin to a doctor taking advice from a newspaper. A learned doctor should have the knowledge that Hygiene only started when it was known to the medical field that bacteria and other micro-organisms are the cause of illness. And that these organisms thrive in dirt. Prior to that, even surgeons never sterilised operating instruments, which means even doctors prior to discovery of micro-organisms were unhygienic. From thence, science has improved upon ways of eliminating infection transmission through education of hygiene. It is foolish for any medical graduate to quote a book wherein the Title itself “Health and hygiene in colonial Goa, 1510-1961 gives away the ignorance of the writer. Original message: Santosh Helekar Sun, 02 Jan 2011 23:48:12 -0800 I just read relevant portions of the book entitled, Health and hygiene in colonial Goa, 1510-1961, written by Fátima da Silva Gracias, and published by the Xavier Centre for Historical Research. I would recommend those interested in this topic to read it, and try to confirm the facts described in it from other sources. It is an eye opener considering the myths being propagated by people in this forum regarding sanitation and hygiene in Goa based on mere perceptions and personal biases. The Goa official imposed one condition to the Nizam, that under no circumstances was a direct approach to be made to the Portuguese Government. Many of these are now freely available, or can be loaned/purchased, on the internet. If one does not trust historians for whatever reason, one should have even more reason not to trust what is posted in internet forums by non-historians. As I have said before, when one is skeptical of a factual assertion made by anybody, one has to try to confirm or refute it by referring to multiple independent reliable sources. Regarding the Ph.D. dissertation on health and hygiene of Gracias that I mentioned, it gives us better information about sanitary conditions and hygiene in Goa, both long before 1961 and just before 1961 - certainly much better than the wild claims, anecdotes and fantasies posted on Goanet. Unfortunately, it does not have pictures to compare with those of Rajan. But to me the point is not to simply compare, or worse, to blame someone and look for excuses. The important thing is to try to learn from our history to seek answers to the following questions, so as to enable us to arrive at the right practical solutions to our problems: 1. What happens when there is overpopulation and overcrowding in a Goan city or village? 2. What happens when the government is indifferent to environmental conditions? 3. What happens when the infrastructure and resources are not adequate? 4. What happens when there are no proper laws and regulations, or when they are not properly enforced? 5. Are native Goans different from other Indians in terms of concern about hygiene and sanitation? 6. What measures work and what measures don't work in solving the problems of sanitation and hygiene? ...and so on and so forth. Cheers, Santosh --- On Mon, 1/3/11, J. He was delivering a lecture on “New Trends in Modern Theatre” on the occasion of birth anniversary of the creator of tiatr, Shri. Lucasinho Ribeiro, at the Black Box, Kala Academy, Panjim on 2nd January 2011. Dwelling minutely on different theatres, such as Indian theatre, European theatre, American theatre, etc, Shri. Kenkre. Speaking further Shri. Kenkre said, for example in the Marathi drama, the spoken word has been replaced by the visuals. He also said that a play is not mere entertainment but it also makes people realize that there is more to it. The combination of language and visuals makes any presentation perfect. Speaking further he said that in this 21st century the drama is going to experience new trends as the writers as well as directors of today are engrossed with innovations and inclined to place before the audience something that is always not conventional. Although there is risk in such attempts, particularly in the commercial drama, very few commercial artistes takes such risks. That vacuum is filled by parallel drama which is presented by amateurs and artistes interested in doing things differently on the drama stage. He said that tiatr in Goa has wide following and hence it is commercially viable. He advised the tiatr artistes to bring out literature about tiatr and see that it reaches to the government authorities not only in the state but at the national level. Such attempts will definitely help Goan tiatr to get recognition at the national level. These images of the poor on Panjim's pavements provide a handsome stage for grandstanding by what I call the digital humanitarians - we know the primus inter pares of this tribe but he shall remain unnamed. The chief credential of the digital humanitarian is the ability to type out kilobytes of sentipoop and drip digital compassion WITHOUT ever having to bear any personal pain to his lifestyle or wallet. Please read the last sentence again, and commit it to memory if you can. Digital humanitarians are experts at sending Goans on a guilt trip with a few pecks of their keyboard. Ghatis don't have food to eat? YOU are the cause. They have nowhere to sleep except the footpath? It's your fault, Goan, so please show some compassion. Defecating, urinating, littering, loitering, cooking - as long as it is done in public spaces, it is perfectly okay. It flatters his view of a compassionate and just world. In his mind, you, the Goan, blessed by more fortunate circumstances, is the real villain here. From the Comrade to the Admin, digital humanitarians have done bupkis for the cause of the less unfortunate. Their real target is those of us who they think live the good life. All said done, the final joke is on us Goans. For the people we see in Joe's photo, cooking on the pavement, will in short order figure out how to play Goa and Goans. They have us beat. [I do not mean to make light of the terrible poverty millions of Indians remain mired in, and the plight of their human condition. I just reject the notion that (a) we Goans must pay the price for the misdoings of the rest of India, and (b) we can solve the issue of poverty by importing it wholesale into Goa. Why should we Goans have to listen to ANY Indian lecture us on this? Why?] Back to the squatters in Joe's photos - Roughly the trajectory will be as follows. In a few months they will find a patch of communidade land to squat on, in a year's time they will be on the voter rolls as Babush's honored guests, and finally they will have their patch of land 'regularized' by a Goan panch who has been bribed with 50 rupees and a bottle of Pepsi (yes, they come that cheap). And did I mention that all this while health care is free - Goa Medical Hospital was conceived way back by the Purtuguez with the ghati in mind. Insightful fellas, those paakle. Think about it: a Goan boy or girl just out of college today HAS NO HOPE of owning land in Goa, but a ghati for whom the digital humanitarians ooze digital compassion can take the train from Bihar/Jharkhand/UP/wherever, squat, cook, litter, piss, defecate on Goa's pavements, and get a jolly good deal from the state, while for many young Goans the dream of a good life is becoming increasingly distant. As I have said earlier, ghatis are the one segment of the population in Goa that has seen a dramatic increase in the quality of life - free housing, free medical care, free outdoor toilets, the works. Shukriya, Goemkar-bab. Central Bangalore today has fewer loiterers and squatters than Panjim. Chalo Goa is the mantra. The digital humanitarian and his fellow NGO compadres have nothing on the Goan poor. Why? Because there's nothing in it for them. The Goan poor do not have the wrenching abjectness to them as the ghati in Joe's photo. Even the poorest Goan has a shred of self-respect than the guy from Bihar who has come with only the shirt on his back. Why bother with the Goan when we can easily import poverty via the Patna Express and keep the NGO mills running? Goans find themselves in an awful situation today. The sorry Goan intelligentsia and the sorrier desh premis have brought this on themselves. Within a generation Goa has been Third World-ized. [Goanet] Unity among Goans
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- Comments : Camilo Fernandes In response to below posts by Arwin Mesquita and Carmen Miranda. I fully agree and endorse the below posts by Arwin and Carmen. It is time all Goans voice their views and come together unitedly rather than taking on each other. True Goans like Floriano are practically singlehandedly trying to stem the rot that has befallen our beloved Goa and every Goan should come forward to support him.Goans seem to be indifferent to what is happening in their neighbourhood/surroundings or others backyards but would stand up if it happening in their property. Instead of being united, Goans seem to be taking on each other and the corrupt Goan politicians are having a ball and enjoying on this state of affairs where there seems to be no unity among Goans. Goans condemn and ridicule these corrupt politicians and instead of boycotting them, at the first opportunity they would be dining and cheering them. The clips of Micky's birthday celebrations and that of Churchill Alemao's daughter make this point. Some Goans feel that Goans who have migrated have no right in Goa or are not lovers of Goa or true Goans. This is absolutely ridiculous. After all these Goans have their properties as well as their family/relations there and most often than not make it a point to go down every year. This is like saying if somebody goes abroad in search of better pastures and to have a better standard of living say his parents/family behind does his love becomes less. Then there are others who only believe in all talk but no action.A good example is as Carmen explains Even trying to get people to sign a petition on the internet world-wide about the moratorium on new mining leases, after begging and imploring and reminding people over and over again I got only 1499 signatures from Goans world-wide to be sent to the Minister of Environment and Forests in New Delhi. What is the use of all words but no action? It is time in this New Year all Goans wherever they are based do their bit for unity and give support to those who care and come forward to do their bit for Goa. If we are not united then very soon Goa will be totally lost and become another Bihar - the laughing stock of people. Let us do our bit unitedly to save and preserve atleast what is left of our Goa. Best wishes to all Goans in this New Year 2011. Dev borem korum. Camilo Arwin wrote : Bihar appears to be the joke of India in terms of lawlessness but is Goa any different or perhaps even worse; if we call ourselves?highly literate?? Until we stop this intimidation and break off the abusive slavery shackles of all thugs, goons, criminals, drug lords etc who are in guise of Politicians, true progress will be limited in Goa. So what?s the solution? Let me share what I told some Goans in United States ?If you really want to do something to break Goa from all this subjugation, then please start speaking up where ever possible, because the more people speak up, the less power, will the corrupt politicians and their evil colleagues have to do anything!!? Also surely we should be aware of the famous saying ?All that is needed for Evil to Succeed, is for Good People to say Nothing?. Can each Goan make this his/her New Year 2011 Resolution, in order for us to realize the Goa of our dreams; for the overall benefit of all Goans? Arwin Mesquita, UAE. Carmen wrote : Carmen Miranda carmitamira...@gmail.com To: goa...@goanet.org What I have been trying to do is precisely what you suggested - concentrate on bite -size chunks of problems in Goa. Goa has too many big problems to be solved and everyone cannot be involved in every movement and every action. This does not mean lack of unity. It means being realistic. Having analysed the situation in Goa and taken into consideration what my expertise and area of interest is I decided to focus on the mining issue in Goa. I am therefore giving all my support to people working on this issue in Goa. That is why I visit Goa frequently and work hands-on with relevant people in Goa and surrounding states , and even lobby ministers in Central Govt. in Delhi, as I do not like to waste my time with Goa government politicians for obvious reasons. However in my experience, trying to lobby Goans to do anything, is more difficult than fighting the powerful mining lobby in Goa. [Goanet] Christmas and the Goan Families of Pakistan
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- Christmas and the Goan Families of Pakistan By Menin Rodrigues (menin...@gmail.com) Old Karachiites are quite familiar with Goans and their traditions – be it everyday lifestyles or special occasions like Christmas. The community has played an admirable role in the making of Pakistan during its early days and helped achieve many milestones. Christmas festivities in the city are confined to the cultures of the Christian community in general but a Goan Christmas is uniquely special because of its several heartwarming customs and values. Walk into a Goan family home during Christmas and you will be welcomed with the tantalizing aroma of ‘Sorpotel’ a succulent and exquisite specialty that can stimulate one’s taste buds to dizzying heights. It is best relished with ‘Sannas’ small rice-based tangy cakes. There are a variety of Goan dishes to partake of at a family lunch or dinner but sorpotel takes center stage. The Goan community of Pakistan (www.goansofpakistan.org) predominantly in Karachi has played a significant role in the development of the nation. They have worked closely with the Quaid-e-Azam (Mohamed Ali Jinnah) in matters of nation-building, be it education, medicine, civic and social set-ups and sports. The delicious ceremonial cake on the occasion of the first civic reception hosted in honor of Jinnah by the Mayor of Karachi in 1947 was prepared by the famous P.F. Pereira’s Bakery; in as much as the writing of the national hockey constitution by O.B. Nazareth, and the creation of the city’s first township (Cincinnatus Town, now Garden East) by Cincinnatus D’Abreo. A Christmas celebration in a Goan family is all about making traditional sweet-meats. The custom has been passed down from generations where the central role of parents, in particular the mother, has been the reason d’état why the Goan tradition of making home-made sweets is so popular and continues to flourish despite the availability of an assortment of sweets in the open markets. Goan children and youth gather around the dining table and kitchen to learn the finer points of preparing these delicacies. The build-up to the making of Christmas goodies begin early in November when Goan ladies and men start purchasing ingredients, such as almonds, pistachios, raisins, currants, walnuts, cherries, orange-peel, condensed milk, cocoa, baking powders, variety of essences, coconut, jaugery, ground grams, cashew-nuts, flour, rice-flour etc. Empress Market has been the traditional hunting ground for mums and dads in search of these items. “Actually it is in the making of sweets and special dishes, in which every member of the family takes part in their own small way, makes Christmas so special in a Goan home,” says Fatima Noronha who finishes her sweets at least a week before Christmas. My wife Veronica has the passion and skill for making a variety of Christmas sweets by the dozens, this year her list includes, SWEETS: Kulkuls, Neurees, Wohrahs, Marzipan, Swales, Carrabolla, Cheese-bows, Walnut Toffee, Coconut Toffee, Pistachio Toffee, Almond Toffee, Cashew Toffee, Doce, Coco-shells. CAKES: Fruit Cake, Marble Cake, Baath Cake, Caramel Brownie and Chocolate Brownie The most famous of Goa's sweetmeat is Bebinca, a wonderful concoction made from layer upon layer of coconut pancakes. Dodol is another famous Goan sweet, traditionally eaten at Christmas time, and made with rice flour, coconut milk, jaugery and cashew nuts. It is usually cooled in a flat pan and served in slices, and is very sweet. Doce, made with chickpeas and coconut is another favorite. Here are some of the most famous Goan Christmas delicacies that you will come across in a Goan home in Pakistan, plum/fruit cake, neurees, kulkuls, jujups, wohrays, cocad, coconut baath, toffees, dodol, sannas, marzipan, chaklios, bolinhas, godshem, filoz, dhonos, doce, banana fritters, chocolate walnut drops and many more, depending on where a Pakistani Goan has his/her roots in the pristine villages of Goa- its folklore and cuisine. Goan traditions in Pakistan, in particular Karachi, remain as strong and vibrant in homes where every effort is made by parents to safeguard the community’s rich history and heritage. Despite changing social trends, children are encouraged to speak in Konkani (mother-tongue) and value Goan traditions, customs and the value of their revered upbringing - their unique characteristic. Goans like to party, play music

Hope (if you are married) your children (if you have and when they grow) will not push out of the next to procure Portuguese identity and/or go overseas. Do let us know if any of your relatives have migrated. Happy New Year 2011. Oscar C. Lobo Melbourne. From: Tony de Sa What I object to most strongly is the stereotyping of Indians as Filthy. Today, in Mapusa, I saw a white - meaning ethnic Caucasian - and he was filthy as ever, dressed in dirty clothes, hair clearly unwashed for ages, skin full of accumulated dirt. People in Europe do not bathe for long periods of time. I have first hand accounts of this. Re: [Goanet] Health and Hygiene in Goa after 2000 (part 2)
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- [1] A writer on TGF wrote the following in 2002: Please check the link below for Mr. Frederick Noronha’s review of a book “Indo Portuguese cities” written by Mr. Walter Rossa http://www.goa-world.net/magazine/cities.htm . ' the capital of the Portuguese Orient lacked basic infrastructure. There was no public water supply, making the people use infected pools and equally contaminated wells at the base of the cliffs. There was a complete absence of any system of collecting rubbish or even of meeting the most rudimentary civic rules governing its disposal. Largos, squares, main roads and the river bank itself rivaled each other in terms of filth,' says the author. [2] TGF wrote the following in response: Would NS like to advise us all which century AD or BC, this description of Goa is from? And if he can, would he like to compare it with the basic infrastructure that existed in areas which were just outside Goa? Would he also like to compare the presence/absence of filth in Goa on December 15th 1961 to what exists today? TGF believes that it is sometimes worth comparing apples with oranges; especially when the audience does not know any better. TGF June 27, 2002 http://www.colaco.net/4/GoaLib25.htm additional reading Walter Rossa - in which the methodology for research is described. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombay_Before_the_British I wonder if anyone has access to the methodology Dr. Fatima da Silva Gracias utilised in her research paper. Her book H and H etc certainly does not give one a clear understanding of the methodology. There are a number of references - and a lot of reference to Teotonio de Souza (who, I believe, was also her guide). One thing is for sure: She has made a hash of mortality rates ( circa p 59). Is here no MPH in Goa she could have contacted? Also if one reads the chapter in reference one will note her mention the improvement in the last few decades pre-1961. How she arrived at that conclusion 'methodologically, is not clear. On a personal note, my first clear memory of Goa is from 1965. I finally had the opportunity to visit Ribandar Hospital, which my Dad had described to me in great detail. His description was from the mid-1940s. In 1966, it was just as clean and neat as he had described it. So also were the Panjim, Mapuca and Margao hospitals. The roads were clean, the restaurants were clean, the ordinary folks were neatly attired, the corner shops (posre) in several villages I visited were impeccably clean, and there was no defecation/urination/cooking or copulation going on ...on the streets. This despite the fact that (from what I understand) Goa was under an Indian blockade from 1955-1961). So, I hope you know why I am kind of puzzled. Perhaps, others have a better sense of Goa than I have .and they will find it fit to disagree with my non-PhD non-dissertation ...on the basis of their experiences. jc --- NEW BOOK: 'PATRIOTISM IN ACTION: Goans in Indias Defence Services' Copies now available at: GOA: Literati (2277740), Other India (2263306), Broadway (6647038), Mandovi (2427904), Noel DSilva Associates (9823120454 / 9096781714), Confidant / Golden Heart Emp (2732450), David Co (2730326), Vardaan (9527463684) SERV / RETD Def Offrs in Goa: O/o Sainik Co-op Hse Bldg Sty, Def Col, Porvorim (2417288) MUMBAI: David Co (22019010) PUNE: Manneys (26131683), Popular (25678327) BENGALURU: Narayan (22865800) DELHI: Ritana (24617278) ONLINE (worldwide delivery): http://www.ritanabooks.com/booksdistri.htm, http://goa1556.goa-india.org ---

[Goanet] Gold deposits in Bhangarachem Goy
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- Gold deposits in Bhangarachem Goy TNN, Jan 4, 2011, 05.19am IST PANAJI: Almost 6,000 metric tonne of secondary gold deposits worth about Rs 1,20,000 crore lie just 60 metres below the ground spread over 40,000 hectares of land in North Goa, noted Goan microbiologist Nandkumar Kamat claimed in an announcement on Monday. This find could put India on top of the gold producing nations of the world in the next five years, if the Geological Survey of India and the central government follows the lead and does prospective digging. This find assumes significance because it is biologically refined and almost 98% pure gold, says Kamat. Currently, South Africa with 36,000 metric tons of gold reserve base and 6,000 metric tonne of reserve accounts around 40-50% of the world reserves, according to the US Geological Survey, Mineral Commodity Summaries, January 2007. The remaining 50% of gold reserves are shared by the rest of the 192 countries. As on date, India stands at number 51 among the gold producing nations with a produce of 2,362 kg (2.362 metric tonne) of gold per year. The entire reserve of India is only 200 metric tonne. But this find could turn around the fortunes for the country over the next five years, Kamat told TOI. As per the 2007 US Geological Survey, Mineral Commodity Summaries, 2007, China, has become the largest producer of gold with an annual production of 290 metric tonne of gold, and adding 800 metric tonne of reserve every year. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Gold-deposits-in-Bhangarachem-Goy/articleshow/7213882.cms --- NEW BOOK: 'PATRIOTISM IN ACTION: Goans in Indias Defence Services' Copies now available at: GOA: Literati (2277740), Other India (2263306), Broadway (6647038), Mandovi (2427904), Noel DSilva Associates (9823120454 / 9096781714), Confidant / Golden Heart Emp (2732450), David Co (2730326), Vardaan (9527463684) SERV / RETD Def Offrs in Goa: O/o Sainik Co-op Hse Bldg Sty, Def Col, Porvorim (2417288) MUMBAI: David Co (22019010) PUNE: Manneys (26131683), Popular (25678327) BENGALURU: Narayan (22865800) DELHI: Ritana (24617278) ONLINE (worldwide delivery): http://www.ritanabooks.com/booksdistri.htm, http://goa1556.goa-india.org ---

[Goanet] Irrefutable evidence to back gold claim: Kamat
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goa Sudharop Annual Awards January 5, 2011 - 3:45 - 6:30pm Hotel Mandovi, Panaji, Goa Details at: http://bit.ly/GoaSudharop2011 --- Irrefutable evidence to back gold claim: Kamat TNN, Jan 4, 2011, 01.06am IST PANAJI: Discovery of gold in Goa is a happy coincidence during the Golden jubilee year of Goa's liberation. Hopefully, Goa may now regain its' reputation as Golden Goa or Sunaparanta, said Nandakumar Kamat, while announcing his pioneering research work to the media on Monday. When questioned about the authenticity of his research and whether he had subjected his work to peer review, the Goan researcher said he has 35 years of research experience behind him and that his findings have been endorsed by Prof Frank Reith from the University of Adelaide, Australia. Kamat claimed that Reith is an international expert in the field. Kamat said he had hastened to go the media because of stiff competition and that he did not want to lose credit for his pioneering work of the discovery of gold deposits in Goa. When asked if his announcement was not a bit cavalier, Kamat said, It may be cavalier but we got irrefutable evidence of the gold deposits from deep core samples in Goa, adding, You can prove me false. This is an open challenge to the scientific community, local, national and global, he said. Giving details of the estimated quantum of gold buried in North Goa, Kamat gave a press release with the following table. Probable lateritic area:- 1,00, 000 ha. Area with gold bearing deposits:- 20-40,000 ha. Estimated gold concentration:-1-2g/MT Estimated gold deposits:-Max 6,000 MT-Min 3,000 MT Estimated market value:- 60,000 crore- 1,20,000 crore The scientist said the gold was located in a rock formation in North Goa known as the 'Sanvordem rock formation' which is about 2.5 billion years old or half the age of the world. He declined to name the exact places in North Goa where the gold is buried 'for obvious reasons' hinting that the disclosure might fuel a mad gold rush and chaos. When asked about the feasibility of mining this gold, Kamat said the government must commission a 'techno-feasibility study' to decide on this. Stating that digging at a depth of 60 m below the earth's surface costs 3 lakh, Kamat said the cost of mining the gold might be prohibitive. But the scientist said that some of the bacteria forms of Goan gold viewed by him are rare and so far unknown. These include forms like folded lattices, galactic nurseries producing Gold starfish assemblages and forms like layered crowns/tiaras. Kamat said other forms include gold druzes, so far unknown but such forms common in biominerals. Kamat's press release said the origin of secondary gold grains is controversial and widely debated in the scientific community; the two main theories are that they are detrital or are formed by chemical accretion. However, there is growing evidence pointing to the importance of microbial processes in the cycling of gold. Common soil bacteria are able to solubilize several milligrams of gold per litre under in vitro conditions. Recent research suggests that bacteria and Achaea are involved in every step of the biogeochemical cycle of gold, from the formation of primary mineralization in hydrothermal and deep subsurface systems to its solubilization, dispersion and re-concentration as secondary gold. The enormous scope of formation, circulation and migration of organic matter in the biosphere proves that its role in the redistribution and creation of local concentrations of gold in the crust of weathering is great. It is estimated that 38 lakh MT of gold is bound in organic matter of sedimentary rocks which are plentiful in Goa, Kamat said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Irrefutable-evidence-to-back-gold-claim-Kamat/articleshow/7213170.cms --- NEW BOOK: 'PATRIOTISM IN ACTION: Goans in Indias Defence Services' Copies now available at: GOA: Literati (2277740), Other India (2263306), Broadway (6647038), Mandovi (2427904), Noel DSilva Associates (9823120454 / 9096781714), Confidant / Golden Heart Emp (2732450), David Co (2730326), Vardaan (9527463684) SERV / RETD Def Offrs in Goa: O/o Sainik Co-op Hse Bldg Sty, Def Col, Porvorim (2417288) MUMBAI: David Co (22019010) PUNE: Manneys (26131683), Popular (25678327) BENGALURU: Narayan (22865800) DELHI: Ritana (24617278) ONLINE (worldwide delivery): http://www.ritanabooks.com/booksdistri.htm, http://goa1556.goa-india.org
