You are welcome to buy or license my photographs (please visit my site for details). My photographs take time, effort, and money to produce - and many of them are intended to be art, not casual snapshots - so please keep that in mind. Dear Soter, The one and only Eugene having been recognised, I would suggest that Rohan Sippy does not need to go as far as Bihar, Kerala or Tamilnadu to achieve the suggested goal.. All he has to do, is to stay right in Bollywood and make a film about Marathi girls. (I would not go as far as to suggest that he makes a film about the XitKodi Sena. He does even have to screen it in Mumbai. All he has to do is to film it and release a trailer. Your second point is one which Eugene should be familiar with. After all, he did say that he was in close contact (I paraphrase) with the 'Marias and Anthonys' of Dhobi Talao. Did he not? jc
Re: [Goanet] Medical errors a big killer
I have already pointed out that it is precisely the outdated numbers rehashed over and over again in the links provided in the post appended below that have be shown to be inaccurate in many subsequent research articles in JAMA and other prestigious medical journals. I have already provided some of these references in my previous posts in this thread. I would be happy to provide copies of these articles if anyone is interested and writes to me privately asking for them. A most significant fact regarding this issue is the fact that the main author, Dr. Troyen Brennan, of the original studies from which the numbers claimed below are extrapolated, has cautioned that these exaggerated numbers are unscientific and unwarranted. Here is his article in the New England Journal of Medicine, entitled "The Institute of Medicine Report on Medical Errors — Could It Do Harm?", arguing this notion: http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM24133421510 Here are the pertinent excerpts from it: QUOTE The combination of the strikingly large numbers of errors cited by the report and the connotations of the word “error” create an impression that is not warranted by the scientific work underlying the IOM report. UNQUOTE QUOTE ...my colleagues and I have cautioned against drawing conclusions about the numbers of deaths in these studies UNQUOTE QUOTE ...neither study cited by the IOM as the source of data on the incidence of injuries due to medical care involved judgments by the physicians reviewing medical records about whether the injuries were caused by errors. Indeed, there is no evidence that such judgments can be made reliably. UNQUOTE QUOTE Is there reason to believe that hospital care has become safer? The answer is yes, at least over particular periods for particular proceduresFor many common procedures, mortality rates declined in the 1960s and 1970s. For more sophisticated operations, such as cardiac surgery, the rates continue to decline. These changes have occurred because surgeons have continuously sought to improve techniques, share information, and report the results of clinical studies. The reduction in mortality rates is due in large part to technological advances, but it is also due to simple attention to surgical practice. Surgical training has always emphasized a commitment to details, systematic thinking, and intolerance of failure — the hallmarks of approaches to the prevention of errors. This is anything but the “cycle of inaction” that the IOM notes. An important part of the medical ethic is the improvement of care, which most physicians and hospitals take very seriously. I do not mean to imply that all hospitals perform at optimal levels or that we should not be scrutinizing the effects of new management techniques on the quality of care. Indeed, the profession should welcome a renewed emphasis on safety, but it is inaccurate to suggest that safety has been overlooked. UNQUOTE ...Dr. Troyen Brennan, M.D., J.D., M.P.H. [Goanet] Konkani Cinema Day Celebrated
Konkani Cinema Day Celebrated Photos: http://bit.ly/KonkaniCinemaDay2011 “In order to improve the quality of Konkani films, the producers and directors must take the making of a Konkani film seriously such that the Konkani film maintains a certain standard” stated Shri. Rajendra Talak, producer and director of one of the commercially successful Konkani film ‘O Maria’. He was speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion of Konkani Cinema Day jointly organized by Tiatr Academy Goa and Dalgado Konknni Akademi on 24th April 2011 at TAG’s Conference Hall, Campal, Panjim. Speaking further he appealed to all involved in the production of Konkani films to shed off the crab mentality and work unitedly for the development of Konkani Cinema. Shri. Premanand Lotlikar, President of Dalgado Konknni Akademi in his welcome speech stated that the sacrifices of the pioneer of Konkani Cinema namely A.L. Jerry Braganza who is known as ‘Father of Konkani Cinema’ for producing and releasing the 1st Konkani film ‘Mogacho Anvddo’ in 1950, should not go in vain and that he should be remembered for his efforts to promote Konkani Cinema in difficult times. Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Academy Goa stated that Konkani Cinema has not become commercially successful not because all of them are below standard but because of the negative attitude of Goans towards Konkani cinema. If we love Konkani and love Goan culture, then it is the duty of every Goan to witness Konkani cinemas by paying tickets. When this attitude is imbibed in us then only Konkani Cinema will rise to greater heights. He also proposed the vote of thanks. Earlier Shri. Rajendra Talak garlanded the portrait of A.L. Jerry Braganza as a mark of respect to the Father of Konkani Cinema. Shri. Walter Menezes compared the function. The formal function was followed by a cultural programme of songs from old Konkani Cinemas. The immortal songs were rendered by Socorro de Santa Cruz, Sonia Fernandes, Clarissa and Maria Cardozo. Very true Tony. The current controversy over Konkani MOI is part of the larger goal of making Marathi mandatory in ALL Goan schools. In addition, force feeding Devnagiri script through Konkani MOI or Marathi on the section of the population which does not identify with the script, reflects a disdain and contempt for Romi protagonists. --- On Mon, 4/25/11, Tony de Sa wrote: > 4. *FROM: MR. FRANCIS SEQUEIRA, ANDHERI ( E ), MUMBAI-400059, INDIA* HI Friends , my common INTERENET friends have introduced your esteemed self. First of all, let me introduce myself to you. I am from Mumbai city. I have over 27 years’ experience in the corporate world in Mumbai out of which about 12 years with reputed builders of Mumbai , who have developed large Townships and are developing tall Towers over 75 floors and now associated with the Remaking of Mumbai through cluster redevelopment in South Mumbai. I wish to hold a seminar in Goa on ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP on 7th July, 2011. I have held several interesting seminars for executives and students of management on the interesting topic of LEADER MANAGER, in order to face the competition in the economy and the confusion in politics. The politicians and celebrities have become the Gods /Goddesses and they are playing with the feelings and emotions of the people. School students are committing suicides after the examinations as they foresee no future without higher education. The youth who are dumped and disgruntled in love are either committing suicides or crimes. Those who are lagging behind in life are jealous of those who have gone ahead in life and prospered. For many junkies the world is just like a merry-go-round for making merry. For the challenging, change-oriented few, life is an opportunity to do something useful for oneself and the society. Some have made new discoveries, inventions, done social services, started charitable institutions, lead nations during the toughest times, started new ventures which have become big MNCs over a period of time. Some have guided people toward God by becoming spiritual leaders. We do love ourselves and we do value ourselves more than silver, gold and diamonds. Today, killer diseases are reducing the worth of human life and even cutting short our life. The root cause of this is lack of natural nutrition in packaged / stored food and also due to polluted air / contaminated water. It is time to think about our lives seriously and pass on the message to everyone, that everything around us makes sense if we are healthy and wealthy. I wish to introduce to you FLP USA, over 25 years old, over US$ 2Bn reputed US MNC, now in India and in Goa, with high quality Aloe Vera based juice and beauty products for healthy, youthful living. I am in touch with over 1000 people in Goa, each one of whom will invite over a 100 friends from all over Goa. It is going to be a very great, gala entrepreneurs’ meet in Goa of 2011, which I am sure will inspire you to do something valuable in your life and also motivate others similarly. The venue will be decided in June 2011 which will be informed to you via email so that you can inform all your people. I am also looking forward to your cooperation to invite over 100 of your relatives, friends and others from all over Goa for the ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP seminar, which will initiate you and them and also their friends to develop an enthusiastic, entrepreneurial state-of-mind to rise above the misery of mediocrity, to challenge the future reality realistically. FLP USA is a simple distributorship without any investment and you make it very big with the help of your relatives and friends in Goa and all over the world. Everyone wants to live a healthy life and to earn fabulous commissions / foreign trips and also to inspire and motivate their near and dear ones and friends to enjoy life. If you are a challenger looking forward to a bright future, please send email to Mr.Simon Davidson on email Id: *smart1...@yahoo.co.in*, for all relevant details of the SEMINAR. You can talk to Mr.Simon Davidon after 1st May 2011 on Cell No. 098 200 22336 about FLP ALOE VERA products, which are natural food supplements, extracted from the natural Aloe vera plant of the highest variety which is specially grown in unpolluted areas. Mr. Simon Davidson is currently in Vienna and will be back in Mumbai on 1stMay. A few years ago, I remember hearing a story about a teacher who gave one Easter egg to each student in the class. Her instructions were for each of them to write what they enjoyed most about Easter or what it meant to them. A day before Easter, she opened each Easter egg given to her students and read each of their messages. One little girl shared how she loved to shop with her mother for a pretty dress for Easter Sunday. Another student said that eating with the family was what he enjoyed the most. One little boy’s message was that he couldn’t wait to get all those Easter eggs. And another wrote, I like having days off from school. Then the teacher came to an empty egg. It belonged to a little shy boy named Reece. The teacher sternly asked Reece “what’s the idea of returning an empty egg? Doesn’t Easter mean anything special to you?” Defensively, Reece quietly said, “The empty egg reminds me of the empty tomb. My Mom and Dad always told me that this was the main reason for the celebration.” The teacher was amazed and found so much of truth in what he said. Well, is Easter all about Easter bunnies and Easter eggs, and new clothes? Though these things are nice to have at Easter time, but it is not as important as compared to how Jesus died for us on the Cross. I’ve heard it said that the Easter egg represents ‘new life’ – as a chicken hatches from an egg. It is okay to enjoy the goodies at Easter time, but let us not forget the real meaning of Easter. We have to believe that Jesus has risen and hope to spend our time eternally with him in heaven. Those who live on what we might call “The outskirts of hope” need a transfusion, which is given during Easter. The resurrection gives our lives a meaning and direction and the opportunity to start over, no matter the circumstances. Just as we dress our children in new clothes, God dressed his only son for us. He was not robed in a fancy dress; instead, he was hung on a cruel cross for all to see, as men gambled on his clothing at his feet. Presently, we give baskets full of goodies and candy filled eggs to our children and those of our friends. But, sadly Jesus was given vinegar when he said, “I Thirst.” They didn’t even offer him a glass of water; however, a sponge was dipped in the sour liquid and lifted up to his innocent lips. God gave his life for our sake. True love doesn’t count the cost; it gives liberally. A true lover gives the best he has to offer, and everything he has for the beloved. God proved his love for us by giving us the best he had to offer — his only begotten son, who freely gave himself as an offering to God for our sakes and as an atoning sacrifice for our sins, and that of the world. A spotless lamb was He. He bled and died for you and me. Therefore, it is high time to change our lives for the better and we can start from today itself. Easter reminds me of how Christ died for the sake of my soul, and how he rose from the dead. I can testify that because of Easter, my Saviour, Jesus Christ, lives forevermore. God’s goal is to make all of us like his resurrected son. As for me, Easter is the day when I would mediate and reflect on all the benefits I enjoy with the blessings from the risen lord. I am thankful for the life and love that God’s sacrifice represents. I am thankful for the opportunities it has afforded me. I am also thankful for the grace that abounds in me because of that humble act. Finally let me end with an apt quote “Jesus took my place on the cross to give me a place in heaven.” May you and your family enjoy the celebration of the Resurrection! *Arlette Azavedo* ARLETTE AZAVEDO Cell no. 9422061766 And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. I would like to ask Eugene if the same Rohan Sippy would feel confident in making such a blatant film on the evils in Bihar, Kerala or Tamilnadu and dare to screen it in those States? Another important question is whether Goa is limited to Maria, Anthony, Tony, .. from a particular community who are in touch with the criminal world? If actors smoking in a film can be an influence on the youngsters and therefore a reason to ban smoking on the screen. Would such a film on Goa not give ideas to people from other States? Unlike some foolish activists, we are not concerned over the statement on women and wine. We are disturbed about the larger implications, the portrayal of Goa as a destination for criminality which ultimately leads to stereotyping of the Goan people in the minds of other countrymen. For unmindful Goans it may be a case of feeling excited that the underbelly is exposed in the film because the coward Goan has no guts to stem the mess on their own. But what will be the ultimate impression about Goa and Goans in the minds of viewers from other States? Has anybody bothered to check that out? -Soter D'Souza

Re: [Goanet] Article on MOI
From: Elvino Rodrigues Subject: [Goanet] article on medium of instruction (Adv. Peter D'souza) Here is something concrete for any one who want to understand better why we should save what is withering away.. COMMENT: As I have previously said, I respect Adv. Jos Peter D'Souza's skills in debating and semantics. Unfortunately, 20 years down the line, the experiment to introduce Konkani as the medium of Instruction has failed miserably since the biggest votary of Konkani MOI - The Diocesan Society of Education and the extended Arch Diocesan Board of Education - has decided it was all a big mistake. Without the support of the DSE and the ABE, support for primary education in Konkani MOI collapses. There are a few things that one ought to consider without emotion and without semantics. 1. Konkani needs tremendous development in the field of literature and vocabulary before it can be used to teach science and technical subjects. 2. In other countries and within our own country, in states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, one can study from KG to Ph D without the support of any other language. Can this be done in Konkani MOI except perhaps in subjects like languages? 3. The issue of education in primary school in Konkani in the Devnagri Script needs to be settled and the bogeys surrounding the Roman Script Konkani should be stilled once and for all. Wasn't Konkani sustained by the writings of Konkani writers in the Roman Script through the 450 years of Imperialistic, colonial rule? 4. Why should we be running dog lackeys of the Marathi lobby which insists on the Devnagri Script to subjugate a section of the Goan populace, the very section that kept Konkani alive through the 450 years they were under the foreign yoke? 5. If India has strengths in the BPO world, it is because India scores over China in the field of English speaking and fluency. Doesn't the BPO world provide employment to many Goans? Let us view the issue in the cold light of reason and keep semantics and emotion and passion away from something that will affect the futures of our children. Adv. D'Souza by his very own admission states that he was raised in a family which spoke English and he was educated in English. Is his understanding in any way? So also as he says did a whole generation of Indians. While Adv. D'Souza was in Bombay, did he not learn to speak Marathi fluently, and later in Goa Konkani too? -- Tony de Sa. tonydesa at gmail dot com ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v
