[Goanet] Fwd: Open Letter to Churchill (Letter in Todays Herald by Roque Estellito Almeida)

*Open letter to Churchill*

Will Churchill Alemao kindly answer a few simple questions asked by the
parents whose children’s future he has virtually ruined? 1) If studying in
one’s mother tongue at the primary school level is good for a child’s
overall development why were your children studying in the English Medium
Sharada Mandir High School, Miramar? 2) Why did you not stand by the system
you introduced in 1991? ( i. e. no grants for English at primary level)? 3)
Why did you make a ‘ U’ turn now and suddenly develop a love for English,
when for last 20 years, you were advocating that a child study in their
Mother tongue? Have you done so, because you realized that doing otherwise
would be politically bad for you? Please stop taking credit for the victory
in Medium of Instruction. In fact Goans deserve an immediate public apology
from you, for your misdeeds in 1991 that ruined lives of Goan students.

Roque Estellito Almeida, Betalbatim.

[Goanet] When Portuguese and English primary education save Goan identity

2011-05-30 Thread SOTER
Goa's history cannot be erased. As English is claimed to be a foreign language
and therefore needs to go unaided in primary education, the contradiction of
aiding it from high school cannot be understood. But when it came to defending
the seperate status for Goa, it was the Portuguese/English primary educated
Goans that were more far-sighted and saved Goa. Those who had a primary
education in Bharati Bhasha joinned the chorus to wipe out Goan identity by
dumping it in maharashtra.
When it came to giving konkani language its due place it was the Portuguese
and English primary educated that stood up to defend the language and ensure it
receives an official status. The Bharati Bhasha educated cried for a
Maharashtra language to be dumped on Goans as the Official language.
So here we are, Portuguese and English primary education has ensured more
patriotism than the Bharati Bhasha primary education.
Can BBSM deny this fact?

Response:
Santosh, I would have a lot more faith that "this scare...is never going to
materialize" if centrists and moderates such as yourself wrote in the Goa media
to assure everyone that the right to chose medium of instruction is a
democratic right and not a communal show of hands.

Nothing that has happened in the past year in Goa, assures me that "this scare"
will not come to pass. On the contrary Hindus who I thought to be moderates and
centrists are now seen parading in full public view calling into question the
nationalist sympathies of Catholic Goans. If not at public rallies they are
busy churning out sundry articles in the print media. Hardly has the
controversy over the Portuguese Sagres ship died down, which for some reasons
warranted communal venom, the ugly head of the medium of instrustion has
reared. Everything of late seems to call into question Catholic nationalism.
This does not bode well for Goa.

I'm sure a lot of people live with the hope that atrocities will never come to
pass in their own neck of the woods. The vast majority of human beings in this
world are least concerned with their neighbour's politics. Their lives center
around what is for dinner and which schools their children will attend.
Nonetheless, atrocities do happen. Violent wars, pogroms and insurrections do
take place. We wander how they happen. They happen because it only takes about
2 to 3 men to decide the illegitimacy of an act and 1 man to declare war.

We must do more in our lifetimes than to believe constantly in the goodness of
humanity. We must be vocal in our condemnation of inhumanity. I await an
article by you in the Goa print media, which soothes and calms the currently
inflamed communal chatter. That would reassure me hugely and mean a lot more
than rebuttals on goanet.

Best,
Selma

This scare, like all previous ones of this nature, is never going to
materialize. The real world is different from what it is portrayed to be by the
politicians and activists on any side. Goanet is over-represented and
ill-served by quixotic freedom fighters and activists, who invariably present a
distorted picture of reality. The regular folk in Goa couldn't care less about
nationalization and denationalization, or the names of individuals. Most
Catholics today are more Indianized than in my childhood, and most
non-Catholics westernized. Indeed, I would submit that the trend is towards
increasing globalization. And that is what it should be, taking the best in of
all cultures of the world, and leave the divisions of the past to history.

Cheers,

Santosh

P.S. Please note that this is simply an expression of a personal opinion, not
to be taken as a personal affront.

[Goanet] Does anyone in Goa dare to suspend GP Naik?

2011-05-30 Thread Rupert Coutinho
*Does anyone in Goa dare to suspend GP Naik?*

I doubt whether any action will be taken against GP Naik who is reportedly
under medical survellience for high BP, given that he is due to retire at
the end of this month on 31st May 2011. After all, loyality and Obeisance
always pays as was the case of a mass murderer and terrorist Bin Laden and
its family where history proved once again blood is thicker than water even
though he was publicly disowned by his family and his country. The deaths
of two innocent tribals perpetuate another set of deadly murderers and
internal terrorist breeding in Goa’s sanctuary including the ones who owe
responsibility of dereliction of duties. The ever assuring CM agreed to
immediately order the suspension of South Goa Collector as reported in the
newspapers. Goans need to come to terms whether we should accept and
tolerate a CM who only gives assurances or a man who can keep his words.
Does Indian democracy really holds any meaning if the administration cannot
initiate action even after orders herald from heads of state. This truly
goes to reflect whether the elected authority and teethless opposition
benches commands any respect from its administration or it is just another
day in Indian democracy where everyone does what they like doing and don't
not care even if it were orders from the First Citizen of the country. I do
know many Goans will think that they were much better under Salazar for some
transitional times and and would have prefered to be under the civilized
Portuguese rules in the years to come.

Buy from India for 60 cents, and sell it for around $200 a tonne (landed
price) overseas

Please read these also and understand the nature of the theft, and why
Sushma Swaraj is beeping so much last few days . . . next scam to open,
 iron ore scam . . .

The royalty paid to the Indian government by the new iron ore exporters
being invited in, like Posco, is Rs27 rupees a tonne for iron ore lumps.
That's all. 60 cents. Not even a dollar a tonne. The rest is, apparently,
part of the whole loan-loan-loan and more loan cycle, since Posco will help

develop the area. At every stage in this financial game, there is a
transaction cost, and it is instead of being in percentage points, now into

 multiples of the costs involved.

Agreed, there is a cost involved in mining the iron ore, extracting it, and

converting it into lumps, which even after allowing for all sorts of cost
overruns is not going to exceed $20 a tonne-an extremely high outer
estimate. Agreed there is a cost towards "developing" the area, whatever it

means. Agreed, some babu somewhere can justify how after 35 years, our
export price is down from $15 a tonne to 60 cents a tonne.

But can anybody justify why the Indian government, the state government,
the various public sector entities, the watchdogs, the parliamentary
committees, the environmentalists, the media, everybody and more-why can't
we get even some percentage of the increase in iron ore prices to the
 country's account?

Assuming the price has gone up by $50 a tonne, all other costs remaining
the same, shouldn't the nation get at least some part of it-especially when

all we appear to be getting is 60 cents a tonne?

[Goanet] Floriano was a denationalised Goan who gave his life for Bharati Bhasha

2011-05-30 Thread Carvalho
Soter,
The day is not too far away when our very names will be questioned and taken as
a sign of denationalisation.

As for who was and who wasn't denationalised in 1950s, I wonder who were the
regular lap-dogs panting outside the Portuguese administration, waiting for any
scrap of a mining lease to fall their way. And if it wasn't mining there was
always the odd Portuguese one-eyed bureaucrat to bribe to look the other way
while gold and luxuries were saftely smuggled through Goa's Gold Corridor. The
names of these shops can still be seen in Panjim and they aren't Portuguese
sounding.

If you weren't mining or smuggling in Goa, you could always emigrate to Bombay
and set up
a jewellery store somewhere around Sonapur, make sure your children study in
Marathi, and grow up to sing or write long verses in Marathi, which is now
taken as a rich "contribution to the literature of Goa." Many, so the story
goes, forgot to mention that they were from Goa, the poor relations of their
wealthier cousins in Bombay.

Of course, history is conveniently forgotten, while forked tongues glibly
accuse Catholic Goans of being denationalised. The same Goans who ate pez,
spoke in Konkani at home, sang their mandos, songs and hymns in Konkani, wrote
and put up their tiatres in Konkani, opened up private printing presses and
started newspapers in Konkani, made sure that Goa became a separate state and
that Konkani was given its rightful place as a language.

Best,
Selma

[Goanet] Clarification on post: Shameless Radha and Bharat Bhasha Suraksha Manch

2011-05-30 Thread Nobert Carvalho
Radha is an Indian name. Anacleto isnt. Can understand the allergies that
develope in the
sub concious mind after getting infected by Congress virus as well as by a
BJP fungi.

First, Cafe Prakash discussions are only meant for relieving headaches after
a failed day.
Second, Do not use them as facts on which thoughts are to be built.
Third, If second mistake is already made, post them b4 mixing them
with Feni!
Cheers!

This is just to clarify that in this earlier post I mixed up the names of
Anacleto with Radharao.
Radharao has been kind enough to draw my attention to this slip and I am
extremely sorry for
the error. Instead of Radha the name should have read Anacleto. Please note
that I stand
corrected. It should read as shameless Anacleto and BBSM. -Soter
