[Goanet] Disappointing Manohar Parrikar
I am extremely disappointed with Manohar Parrikar's association with BBSM, for the recent Bandh on 6th June 11. I had some respect for Parrikar with regards to his high administrative/governing capabilities, when compared to many other tainted and extremely corrupt MLA's who are Smugglers, Pimps, Drug Lords, Land Sharks etc. But I am shocked that he aligned with the Shashikala's Group; who were not only known historically for being against Goa retaining its separate identity, but also who made communal/unfair statements. Also is the BBSM fight for Konkani or is it actually for Marathi? Why are there over whelming more Marathi Aided Government Schools in Goa today vs. Konkani, if Konkani is the official language of Goa? I would have had some understanding if Manohar, BBSM, UGDP and other hypocritical Konkani supporters were fighting for the exclusivity of Konkani, but this does not appear to be the case!! There are issues which are more serious in Goa today e.g. mining which is devastating Goa, Mega Project Menace, Crime, Severe Regional Plan in-consistencies, Demand for Special Status, Goa slowly going from the hands of Goans etc. Why can't Manohar Parrikar and the BJP protest with the similar enthusiasm more wisely against these more critial issues? If he did the latter then I am sure that many Goans would have stood with him and respected him. [Goanet] Navatara Goan owner Carlos Tavora stands up against bandh despite threats and shows the way to all Goans
Navatara stands up against bandh despite threats TEAM HERALD teamher...@herald-goa.com PANJIM: Navatara, a name popular with foodies in Panjim, Mapusa and Porvorim, lived up to its admirable reputation once again of keeping its restaurants open despite bandh call on Monday. The pure vegetarian restaurant which has received accolades for its quality food and hygiene, was the only outlet that stood up against the bandh, implicitly terming it as illegal. With complete police protection, service at all three restaurants went on smoothly. With no other place open for the famished, Navatara dished out its fare solace to tourists, Panjimites and those working. Navatara owner, Carlos Tavora, who runs this food chain for last 25 years, feels that is one of the ridiculous ways of raising your voice. As per the apex court, bandh is illegal and is unacceptable, he said adding that, ?time has come when more and more people need to stand up against such anti-social elements?. In last 25 years there has been not a single occasion, when Navatara has downed its shutters. It?s been now almost 16 years, since the food chain is operational at Mapusa and soon will be completing its first anniversary in Porvorim. I am a business man and my aim is to serve people. I am not a politician, Tavora said adding that since the restaurant was opened at Panjim, 25 years ago, he has not supported any bandh irrespective of who and why is it called. I live in a democracy, where nobody can force me to close down or stop serving. Everyone here has freedom and so do I, he added. When asked to throw light any troubles he may have faced during the agitations, in past, Tavora said that there are instances wherein his restaurants at Panjim and Mapusa were stoned. Once a mob had also threatened my staff, he said. Regarding the Monday bandh call, Tavora informed that on Saturday last, a group of 30 had marched into his Porvorim restaurant warning to close down on June 6. But he was not one to be given-in. All Goans salute you and you make us proud!!!

[Goanet] Just A Matter Of Tact (was about Temple Entry)
While it is common sense that one has to dress decently in places of worship one cannot expect people to do the right thing of their own accord. It is the responsibility of the Directorate of Tourism to ensure the message gets to tourists before they go to such places. There are several ways to do this which the Directorate would know. Once people are already there, a tactful solution to the problem would be to stop inappropriately dressed people and offer a wrap-around garment for rent with a deposit, as a requirement for entry. That way the people get to see what they have come for, respect is maintained and the message conveyed to all. I remember two incidents back in the day. The first was at the Catholic Gymkhana, a premier club in Bombay where Christmas and New Year dances were de rigeur for socially inclined Goans. I was in a group of friends of whom one had just come from Ratlam directly to the venue. He had no jacket on and they were checking at the gate. So we went in and told him to remain outside. Once inside, I took off my jacket and sent someone with it for the waiting friend, who was then able to enter. Inside, there was no checking. The other incident was at a Taj Mahal restaurant (don't remember the name). We were in a group and I had no jacket, just a tie. When I was held back, the group decided we should go elsewhere. Quickly, the greeter went to a side room and returned with a jacket for me to don. We had a good evening after that. Our money didn't matter to the Taj, but goodwill did. Who had more finesse? The Catholic Gym or the Taj? Roland. Toronto. "Vivian A. DSouza" wrote: About time people learn to respect the sanctity of places of worship, whether Hindu, Christian, Moslem or Sikh. [Goanet] HC adjourns guv office plea in RTI matter
The Goa governor saying the RTI act doesn't apply to him needs a response that should discourage similar fraudulent claims from other public figures. This waste of the high court's time and public money should be made good from his salary in the same manner as public information officers are penalised when they delay giving information to applicants. For good measure, the governor's challenge should attract a fine similar to the one the Supreme Court levies on what it considers frivolous public interest litigation. Linken Fernandes

Strongly condemning the government's brutal crackdown on thousands of his supporters, he retreated that his fight against corruption and blackmoney will continue till his last breath. In a bid to clear allegations that he had a political motive behind his satyagraha, Baba Ramdev said he does not belong to any political party or endorse any ideology. Arguing that his agitation has received unconditional support from millions of people across, Ramdev said the situation is grave and all want a respite from the cancer of corruption. Ramdev further said that he has not sought any support from the RSS, but opined that there was no harm if the right-wing organization was supporting him. The main aim of his agitation was to force the government to bring back thousands of crores of blackmoney stashed abroad in tax heavens in foreign locations, he added. http://www.9newz.com/baba-ramdev-threatens-to-arm-supporters

[Goanet] Action against bus operators who supported bandh
Action against bus operators who supported bandh Transport director Arun Desai said that strict action would be taken against those bus operators who extended support to the June 6 Goa Bandh, subject to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA)'s report on the matter. "In a day or two, the RTA will file a detailed report on the issue, and in particular, will investigate the circumstances under which buses did not ply on the designated routes on Monday," said Desai. He added that the RTA is the registration and licensing authority that issues permits to vehicles and also takes necessary action against vehicles found violating their permit. [Goanet] Goa bandh a success???!!!!
In response to Soter's and Freddy's below mails : Camilo Fernandes : The organisers of the Goa bandh against English, claim that it was a spontaneous success which is ridiculous. The real truth is and they too are fully aware that it was only violence, threats, intimidation and fear that made the common man remain at home. These leaders are just following the same violent tactics used by Shiv Sena in Mumbai where their bandhs are always total not due to the support but the fear of violence and retaliation that people remain at home and dont venture going out. Goans by and large are non violent, peaceful people and no matter which religion one belongs to they live in harmony celebrating one another's festivals collectively. During this bandh they had no choice due to fear of violence and may have not ventured out only due to this reason. As Soter mentioned again a true Goan businessman Carlos Tavaro - Navatarra owner refused to down his shutters despite threats. Navatara, a name popular with foodies in Panjim, Mapusa and Porvorim, lived up to its admirable reputation once again of keeping its restaurants open despite bandh call on Monday He proved that atleast one Goan had the spine to stand up to his principles no matter what the consequences are. Goans can proudly look at him with admiration and he is a source of inspiration to all Goans fighting for justice. The people of Goa have overwhelmingly supported English at the primary level and who are these leaders/political parties to force their own opinion on them. They are the same people who will oppose English yet on the quiet can afford and will send their children to the best English private schools maybe in India or in the States/UK/Canada or Australia and secretly migrate using Portuguese passports. All they are trying to do is take advantage and be in the limelight through the back door professing that they love Marathi and Konkanni. Goans by and large are non violent, peaceful people and no matter which religion one belongs they live in harmony celebrating one another's festivals collectively. These communal leaders are the ones who want to destroy this harmony for their own vested interests. They think Goans are fools and can be taken for granted. It is upto all Goans to remember how these communal parties want to destroy Goa and make sure that they never ever cast their valued votes in favour of these communal parties. Camilo Fernandes Soter wrote : "SOTER" To: Subject: [Goanet] Traders, Vendors, politicians, thugs, have no locus standi in the MoI controversy The Goa bandh called by the BBSM was a flop because the very educational institutions which should have been concerned with the MoI controversy remained open. Traders, vendors, politicians, thugs and communal elements have no locus standi in determining what is a purely educational issue. Baba Ramdevs, Togadias and Shashikalas have absolutely no business in imposing the language of instruction in education. The rightful stake holders are the PTAs and they alone can decide what is beneficial to them. A bunch of political and communal opportunists have not succeeded in their adventure and the parents have given a befitting reply by sending their children to school. What report does Digambar kamat want to send to new Delhi? That the Goa bandh called by divisive and disruptive mergerists miserably failed to master support from parents and therefore could only disrupt commerce. And once again a true Goan businessman refused to down his shutters despite threats. That the close aides of Digambar Kamat were in the forefront of the Bandh and burning effigies of Manmohan Singh. Shame, Shame Digambar! Freddy Agnelo Fernandes wrote : To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Goa?s Fear Psychosis The dreams and designs of the Marathi protagonists were defeated a long time ago, but today after years in hibernation and with the victory of the parents in the MOI issue, they have suddenly woken up to the reality that with grants for English medium, Marathi would be obsolete in Goa in the years to come and now in the name of protecting Konkani, are now trying their level best to protect Marathi. Konkani survived over 450 years of Portuguese rule and around two decades of Marathi protagonists? rule and, will not die even if English is made the MOI. Right to the medium of instruction is the prerogative of the parents and it should not be politicized. The government has only approved grants for English medium which is a fundamental right of choice of the parents. Konkani and Marathi schools have not been forcefully closed down. The people who oppose grants to English medium schools are free not send their children or grand children or even great grandchildren to Konkani or Marathi Medium schools, it will be their choice and nobody can force it on to them.
