[Goanet] Partnerships to rebuild Indian game

Dubai: While expectations from the Indian football team in
international assignments are not often sky high, the same cannot be
said of the man who occupies the hot seat of general secretary of the
All India Football Federation (AIFF). Little wonder then that Kushal
Das, the present incumbent who has held key corporate portfolios in
the past, admits that he has his hands full.

He was in Dubai to watch his national team take on the UAE in the
first of their World Cup qualifiers in Al Ain yesterday. Das of course
is no stranger to Dubai, having had a tenure with the International
Cricket Council (ICC) as their Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for two
years.

Ever since taking up this new assignment last October, Das has done
his bit towards brand building for the federation — building up a
public relations machinery as well as entering a strategic alliance
with IMG Reliance Group.

Speaking to Gulf News exclusively, he held court on various subjects —
ranging from Baichung Bhutia to the need for hardselling the game in
the country. Following are the excerpts:

Article continues below

Gulf News: What are your expectations from the World Cup qualifier
against the UAE?

Kushal Das: There are expectations, but at the same time we are not
unrealistic about our chances. The UAE team is a good side… what I am
looking at is a good performance. I am not looking at short-term
results but long-term goals.

Ever since the Asian Cup campaign in Doha at the beginning of the
year, we realised that the long ball game we were trying to adhere to
did not suit our style. We approached Armando Colaco — who took up the
challenge on a short-term basis — and I must admit that progress has
been made about the style of play. The victory against Qatar was a
remarkable one. Hence, I will be quite satisfied if I see a change in
style.

The controversy in the aftermath of the Asian Cup saw Bob Houghton
being removed as coach much ahead of his term and even Baichung Bhutia
being criticised for playing with an injury. In hindsight, do you
think the AIFF mishandled the issue?

Since we were playing the Asian Cup after 27 years, we did not want to
generate any negativity — neither did we publicly criticise the coach
for fielding players who were not fully fit. The technical committee
met later and we expressed our reservations to the coach.

The federation has named both the veterans, Bhutia and Rennedy Singh,
in the squad to tour England for the Pakistan matches. Is it some kind
of payback time for them in view of their contribution to Indian
football?

Well, not really. We have to acknowledge the contributions of both
Bhutia and Singh in Indian football. The squad which we were supposed
to have sent was essentially an under-23 team, but these two can play
the role of mentors.

This apart, Bhutia has an iconic presence not only in Indian football
but in south Asia. Both his and Singh's presence will help build up
the hype during the team's England tour.

Post-Asia Cup, do you think there could be a sense of hurt in Bhutia —
that of such negative publicity despite contributing so much for
Indian football?

Actually, we have never publicly criticised Bhutia for his form in
Doha. The reason why Colaco did not consider him in the build-up to
these qualifiers is purely on fitness grounds, and he himself has
acknowledged it. Once he proves his fitness and wants to carry on at
the international level, we may still consider him.

Over the last few years, there is money coming into Indian football.

Well, we haven't yet signed a new broadcast deal for the I-League, but
we have signed up a significant partnership with IMG Reliance. It's
not only a marketing deal but a strategic alliance under which they
are helping us in the restructuring of our calendar, infrastructure as
well as development programmes.

It's a very good partnership. When Zee terminated their partnership
last year, IMG came into the fray and we hope to build on the
relationship.

However, instances of Mahindras & JCT — two of the biggest corporate
houses — pulling out teams must be a bad advertisement for Indian
football…

I wasn't around when Mahindras disbanded the team but from what I had
gathered, they decided to shift their focus to something else. JCT's
reasons were of course largely financial and it didn't help that they
got relegated. We are not unduly worried at the pullout of these
teams, though it's rather unfortunate.

There is enough interest from new corporate houses, for example, the
Jindal Group, who are interested in forming a club. What they, of
course, want to see enough evidence of is that we have a plan in place
and that's what we are working on. The Indian youth today watch a lot
of football — though international and the EPL [English Premier
League] — and hence there is a market for the game.

The AIFF has been talking about an academy and centres of excellence.

Blessing of Animals
by Kevin E. Mackin, O.F.M.

As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd.

A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and
even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the
Blessing of Pets.

This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love
for all creatures.

feast of Saint Francis Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved
the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers,
staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a
donkey.

Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living
things. “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister
creatures.” And there was testimony in the cause for St. Clare of
Assisi’s canonization that referred to her little cat!

That there are today over 62 million cats in the U.S. attests to the
continuing affection we have for our furry, feathered or finned friends.
We've even had a cat called Socks in the White House. Other popular
presidential pets range from Abraham Lincoln’s Fido to Lyndon Johnson’s
beagles, named Him and Her.

For single householders, a pet can be a true companion. Many people
arrive home from work to find a furry friend overjoyed at their return.
Many a senior has a lap filled with a purring fellow creature.

>>>
The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because
the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic.
Eye-to-eye, a man and his dog, or a woman and her cat, are two creatures
of love.

No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions
to church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond of
creation is celebrated.
<<<

At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often
welcomes each animal with a special prayer. The Blessing of Pets usually
goes like this:

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called
forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You
inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We
ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live
according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in
creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”

Two prime pages for advertorials in today's Herald glorifying the Deputy

compensate for this space and thereby denied the consumer of two pages of local

Dear Dr Reis, I really meant it when I wrote the earlier post. Come on, you
have to agree, either it is offensive to Yoga (and people who believe in
Yoga), or to the dog itself!

I think that is most offensive to the small children in Bangalore (or
wherever). We have to really go ahead and state this, even if this comment
could be treated as being "offensive" to Dr Anjali Rao.

A right to bite? Hang on a minute, I thought we were talking about Yoga, the
dogs' stress levels (how is this determined anyway, by whom they bite?) and
whether they should be taking to Yoga.

Anyway, I would agree that they have a "right to bite", but only if they did
this without causing any hurt or pain to the humans. Now, don't tell me this
is impossible.

Now this is getting too complex for me to follow!

If I caught on to THAT plot right, JoeGoaUk was saying that the dog in
question had some grudge against his purse!

Now, if the human male can be so envious about a piece of dead cattle skin
(leather) in someone else's pocket (and/or its contents), then why deny the
dog that right?

This is offensive in animal-rights terms.

May I ask why? I do not agree with your logic here. This is like begging the

Don Bosco Engineering College in Fatorda inaugurated
TNN | Aug 2, 2011, 01.26AM IST

MARGAO: Adding 240 engineering seats for students in the state, the Don
Bosco Engineering College, Fatorda, was officially inaugurated on August
1 by Fr Ian Figueiredo, provincial of the Salesian Konkan province.

"Don Bosco institutions have been around since 1846, and present in the
world today in 132 countries," said Figueiredo, who is also the chairman
of the college.

Fr Kinley D'Cruz, director of Don Bosco College of Engineering, said
that the best faculty had been roped in for the first semester across
the four streams.

"All requirements, such as drawing halls, laboratories, canteen and
general infrastructure of the college are in place," said D'Cruz. He
added that the foundation stone for the main college building would be
laid next week and the construction of the new building spread over
10,716 sq m would be completed by the year 2015.

Asked why the state needed another engineering college, D'Cruz said that
this could be judged by the fantastic response in admissions. Besides,
the college is located in the heart of the city, he added.

Figueriodo pointed out that under the AICTE tuition fee waiver scheme,
one seat per course program will be given free to a student.

The college has been granted 60 seats for each of its four engineering
streams: Mechanical, electronic and tele-communications, civil and
computer engineering.

Bullfighting saved from the sword as Spain rules it is an artistic discipline

Socialist government says ministry of culture will be responsible for
development and protection of controversial sport

The debate over bullfighting has been reignited in Spain after the
government recognised the spectacle as "an artistic discipline and
cultural product", delighting enthusiasts but outraging animal rights
campaigners.

Prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's socialist government
announced that the ministry of culture will from now on be responsible
for the "development and protection" of bullfighting, which previously
fell within the remit of the interior ministry.

The move follows pressure from bullfighting organisations keen to
protect their livelihood following a controversial vote to ban
bullfighting in the Catalonia region last year.

The ministry of culture said in a statement: "As it is understood that
bullfighting is an artistic discipline and a cultural product, it was
considered that the ministry of culture was the correct place for its
development and protection."

Supporters, who see bullfighting as an integral part of Spain's
cultural identity, hope the announcement is a step towards protecting
the tradition from further regional bans.

Juan Diego, a matador speaking for the Bullfighters Union, welcomed
the announcement as necessary "for the protection and guardianship of
bullfighting", describing the sport as "a symbol of Spanish cultural
heritage that shapes the national identity".

The change was backed by the conservative Popular party (PP), in
opposition but favourite to win power in the general election on 20
November.

Miguel Cid Cebrián, chairman of the Parliamentary Bullfighting
Association, said he hoped the PP would provide legal protection for
bullfighting as a special "cultural interest" if it takes power, in
order to stop other regions outlawing the tradition.

Last year the regional government in Madrid announced it was awarding
bullfighting legal protection locally, because of its cultural
importance.

Opponents, who describe the practice as a barbaric bloodsport, accused
the government of abandoning a commitment to animal rights.

Silvia Barquero, spokeswoman for Pacma, an anti-bullfighting political
party, told newspaper Público the decision to switch responsibility
for bullfighting to the ministry of culture was "complete nonsense ...
a measure which sends us back to the Middle Ages".

Animal rights campaigners say bullfighting only survives because it is
subsidised by the Spanish taxpayer. Attendances are falling, its
appeal has faded among younger Spaniards and the industry has been hit
by the economic crisis. The number of bullfights taking place at local
fiestas has diminished as spending cuts have been enforced.

The Catalan regional government voted to ban bullfighting in the
northeastern region last July, by 68 votes to 55, with nine
abstentions, on the grounds it is cruel and outdated. The vote was
held after campaign group Prou! (Enough! in Catalan) collected 180,000
signatures in favour of a ban.

Anti-bullfighting organisations hope the Catalan example will be
copied in some of Spain's 16 other autonomous communities.

Critics of the ban said it was motivated more by Catalan nationalism
and a desire to assure political independence from Madrid than by a
genuine desire to outlaw the tradition.

The ban, which will come into effect next January and will not be
affected by Friday's decision, will be the first to be introduced in
mainland Spain. The Canary Islands outlawed bullfighting in 1991.

A poll last year for the newspaper El País found 60% of Spaniards did
not enjoy bullfighting, but 57% disagreed with the ban in Catalonia

[Goanet] Destructive trends that threaten quality journalism ( N.Ravi, former Editor, The Hindu)

2011-08-01 Thread Dr. Anjali Mohan Rao
*Destructive trends that threaten quality journalism*
*N. Ravi **(Former Editor, The Hindu)*
The growing dependence on advertising has made the press as a whole soft
towards large advertisers when dealing with issues of integrity,
environmental protection, the larger public interest and even corporate
performance.
A different set of political issues arises when the advertiser is the
government. Governments wield significant clout, given the substantial
dependence of newspapers — small newspapers in particular - on government
advertising.
Executives in the states have transformed government advertising into a
system of patronage to gain influence over the media. However, it is a
matter of some satisfaction that such patronage has not resulted in a
totally subservient or less than vigorous press.
In normal times, newspapers have not been averse to granting small favours
in return — publication of photographs and interviews, for instance — but in
the coverage of critical issues such as corruption in the allocation of
radio frequency spectrum for mobile telephone operators where their own
credibility is at stake, they have not pulled their punches. There are of
course notable exceptions to the display of such independence.
Incidentally, advertising is only one of the tools used by governments. The
Indian supreme court catalogued the methods in a judgement: "Secret payments
of money, open monetary grants and subventions, grants of lands, postal
concessions, government advertisements, conferment of titles on editors and
proprietors of newspapers, inclusion of press barons in cabinet and inner
political councils etc. constitute one method of influencing the press.

MEE CHURCHILL (NOT WINSTON) BOLTOY by Dr. Oscar Rebello
Saturday - Jul 30, 2011
Friends, Goans and Congressmen (and BJP men as well, because if push
comes to shove, I may have to turn to you)
Permit me to introduce myself. (As if you all still didn’t know). I am
Goa’s premier STATE MAN. In many ways I’m responsible for the sorry
state of affairs in our state of Goa today, but then that’s the price
you pay for many of my sacrifices in political life.

I’ve sacrificed so much to serve you, my beloved people (or idiots
depending on your perspective). I sacrificed my trawlers for you; I
sacrificed my CM kodel in 15 days, in the PDF experiment (actually my
only genuine sacrifice but then who notices); I sacrificed Konkani for
English; I’ve sacrificed my friendship with Luizinho bab and my title
to GOD FATHER; I’ve sacrificed the Save Goa Front at the altar of
greed and avarice; I’ve sacrificed the punch-drunk and ideologically
retarded Congress party in Goa a number of times; I’ve sacrificed the
secret and hush – hush support of Goa’s biggest brains; Dr.Willy’s and
Manohar’s slush backing; I’ve sacrificed my family to serving Goa;
I’ve sacrificed Goa’s bridges and roads to shady, seedy contractors;
The list goes on.

With so much sacrificing they now should crown me the undisputed
QURBANI KING of Goa.

And what do I get for all my sacrifices? Betrayal! Dhoka!! A dagger in
my back! Churchill deserves better!

And now it’s time to show a fist to all the squealing pigs. I’m going
to show that Vijay the Sardesai! I’m going to show that upstart
Pratima Coutinho! I’m going to show that Digambar Kamat! I’m going to
show the High Command! I’m going to show that Low Command! I’m going
to show those Youth Congress brats! I’m even going to show that Mickey
Pacheco ( but not too much, since secretly I’m a little scared of him
).

With me around dear Goans, it’s always SHOWTIME in Goa. The theatre of
the absurd! The vaudeville act of high histrionics and abject
stupidity!

And what I love the most is that all you idiots oops friends keep
buying into the act! Again Again and Again.

So I don’t just resign to my fate. I just resign from this railway
platform called the Congress and like Arnold Schawerzenegger always
claim that “I’LL BE BACK”!

So then the question arises?

What is the secret of my success ? How do I and my family survive all
these monkey antics and keep getting re elected again and again by
thumping majorities.

Money may play a small role but the key reason I and those of my ilk
like Babush and Mickey and the rest succeed is because both the
principal parties in Goa, the bankrupt Congress and the opportunistic
BJP need us desperately to navigate the ruthless corridors of power.
We are simply indispensable knights on the chess board of Goan
politics.

The Congress despite an ideological doctrine most palatable to Goans –
one of pluralism, secularism and tolerance is so stuffed up and
dependent on rank mercenaries that the bigger your blackmailing power,
the lower the Congress will bend. So if a party that refuses to stand
by its own core beliefs succumbs to blackmail, almost on a daily
basis, what else do I do but become the biggest black mailer of them
all??

You think that Diggu Baba has remained CM so long because of his
leadership qualities: Balderdash!!. He has remained CM only because he
has so beautifully handled blackmail, elevating it to a fine art. (
that this could cost him his Margao seat is another matter altogether
)

And about the BJP the less said the better. Its ideology of division
revisionism and hatred is so repulsive and repugnant to Goans that
even polite frogs have stopped croaking. So they keep throwing us the
necessary life lines, every time the going gets tough for them. And
there’s no one quite like Manohar Parrikar who can defend the
indefensible with a straight face and arithmetic accuracy.

Therefore, my loyal Goans, until a party evolves in Goa, which has the
ideology of the Congress, is backed whole heartedly by the moral
oracles (a.k.a. activists ) and has the discipline, commitment and
genuine service qualities of the BJP cadre, we will always be kings
and family No.1.

And since that party is a Disney like fantastical dream which will
never come true, your goose is well and truly cooked.

(this type of an experiment has been forged by Mamta in West Bengal.
The ideology of the Congress, the backing of activists and the sort of
discipline of BJP cadres. And see how Mamta romped home).

For now read my lips! Churchill is Goa and Goa is Churchill and all
you fellows out there better get used to our kind of democracy which
will take the whole of Goa to hell but at least my scarifies won’t
have gone in vain.

Thank you, God bless and Viva Goem.

P.S. Also now forget Galgibaga and Talpona and Sinquetim, I’m off to
build another bridge to connect with Digambar Baba. I have to sink
that Vijay fellow this time at any cost!!!.

[Goanet] BJP v/s Primet Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh

2011-08-01 Thread michael iglesias

BJP has been in opposition for quiet some time and they cannot accept it, so
far they have done nothing fruitful as a formidable opposition , they play
second fiddle to every Problem they encounter in India , be it 2G scams, Anna
Hazare, Commonwealth Games Scam, Adarsh Plots Scam and so forth , as a matter
of fact i have not come accross any issue of national importance to the
citizens of India that BJP has taken up , rather than criticizing Dr. Manmohan
Singh , trying to dislodge the Central Govt by pulling it down and being
seen giving speeches on Televesion it is high time they introspect and find a
solution to their own problem in being a constructive opposition .

What policies have they introduced as an opposition , BJP has some very good
politicians in their Party who should advise their Party what to do, to name a
few Shankar Prasad, Sushma Swaraj , and Pratap Rudy .

BJP needs to think now if they want to remain as an opposition party at the
centre otherwise they loose being erased out totally from Indian Politics.

I do not support the Congress party but support Dr. Manmohan Singh who has
played an extraordinary role as a PM .

[Goanet] BOMBAY - ISRAEL of INDIA & AMERICAN HYPOCRISY.

2011-08-01 Thread Roger
Bombay’s security is being upgraded to a level that will match 25 to 50% of
what is in London or new york or Israel. With all the security measures the
tax paying & law abiding citizens are bound to loose their privacy &
democratic way of life BUT will all the security measures prevent the
Terrorists ( one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter ) from
carrying out any future terror attack in Bombay AND will the security
measures prevent migrants from encroaching land in bombay and creating slums
becoming vote banks getting free civic facilities getting free water
connections getting free 280 sq. ft. apartments worth 20 Lakh rupees AND
will the security measures prevent 600 million litres of water from being
wasted in theft & leakages everyday in bombay AND will the security measures
stop the rampant corruption in BMC – Collectors office – Ration office –
Building proposal dept. & other State govt. depts. AND will the security
measures prevent the Politicians from giving their Builder friends Unlimited
Floor Space Index (FSI) & permission to exploit open spaces, mangroves,
gardens, playgrounds, saltpanlands & forest land in Bombay and what about
the thousands of crores of tax payers money that is being utilized for the
security measures. Money which should have been used for social &
infrastructure purpose is getting drained into security measures with no
guarantee that the security measures will benefit the law abiding & tax
paying citizens.

What can the common man do if the political parties controlling the
Maharashtra govt. & BMC & other Muncipalities are hell bent on converting
the Bombay Metropolitan Region into a Concrete & Slum jungle without
bothering about the environment, water supply, civic issues, electricity
issues, traffic issues, population issues, etc. Why don’t the political
parties controlling the Maharashtra govt. provide migrants with free land &
free housing in Western Maharashtra i.e. Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Nashik,
Sangli, Ahmednagar & Solapur districts and connect these districts with
bombay metropolitan region with high speed trains. The answer is simple
majority of the politicians controlling the Maharashtra govt. are natives of
Western Maharashtra and don’t want their native lands to be encroached by
outsiders.

India is the only secular & democratic country in the world where
vandalization of churches and human rights violations of christians is a
regular feature. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom
(USCIRF) in 2010 had passed on detailed reports on the vandalization of
churches & human rights violations of Christians in India to the White House
and US Secretary of state but Barack Obama & Hillary Clinton have not yet
publicly reacted on those reports.

Jesus Christ came into a human form on earth not just to preach human
rights, morality, peace, justice, equal rights but also to revolt against
the corrupt political & religious leaders of his time. If Jesus Christ had
to again come on earth in human form his first battle would be most probably
against some of the corrupt, greedy & rogue Cardinals, Bishops & Priests who
have infiltrated the Roman catholic church.

In last one year local newspapers in bombay have been reporting about the
illegal sale of church properties. Due to which the Archbishop issued a
notice which reads “A parish priest wishing to sell church property must
obtain consent from church finance committees at the local and archdiocesan
level, and from a body of senior priests, the Archbishop and the charity
commissioner” does this notice make any sense. Of-course Not. Because the
notice does not include the consent to be taken from lay catholic
association of the parish in matters related to sale of church properties.

The lay Catholics in Bombay need to wake up from their deep slumber and take
control of their local churches & all its institutions & all church
properties & parish schools and restrict the duty of the parish priest only
to religious work and pay the parish priest monthly salary…….With due
respect to the priests, they are shepherds of the flock. They should contain
themselves to just that. The priests come here for a few years, finish their
term of 2 – 6 years and leave to serve another parish. Therefore, it is best
that all the nitty-gritty of Church assets should be left rightfully to the
parishioners. After all, the Church and its assets belongs to its
parishioners.

Every monsoon in bombay more than 1000 Billion liters of rain water goes
down the drain into the Arabian sea. All the big, medium, small ponds &
wells in bombay have been encroached and there is nothing left to store rain
water. The 18 Million population of bombay everyday require more than 5000
Million liters of water but BMC only supplies 4000 MLD from which 600 MLD is
wasted in thefts & leakages. From the six lakes that supply water to bombay
two lakes by the name Tulsi lake and Vihar lake are located within the
densely forested 103 sq. km. Sanjay Gan

2011-08-01 Thread AURELIO VIEGAS
The teacher gave her fifth grade class an assignment. Get their parents to
tell them a story with a moral at the end of it.

The next day, the kids came back and, one by one, began to tell their
stories. There were all the regular types: spilled milk and pennies saved.
Finally, only Janie was left.

The teacher asked: "Janie, do you have a story to share ?"

''Yes madam. My daddy told me a story about my Mommy. She was a Marine pilot
in Desert Storm, and her plane got hit. She had to bail out over enemy
territory, and all she had was a flask of whisky, a pistol, and a survival
knife. She drank the whisky on the way down so the bottle wouldn't break,
and then her parachute landed her right in the middle of 20 Iraqi troops.
She shot 15 of them with the pistol (until she ran out of bullets), killed
four more with the knife (till the blade broke), and then she killed the
last Iraqi with her bare hands".

''Good Heavens,' said the horrified teacher. "What did your Daddy tell you
was the moral of this story ?"

"Stay away from Mommy when she is drunk".

The dogs are tensed up by the increase in the number of humans around them, and
they have every right to bite humans, even if the anger is due to fight with

‘Doga’ is a right way of bringing ‘inner’

Milky Way Lights Up as Crescent Moon Sets

The crescent moon setting over the city
The luminous crescent moon gives away all its charms in the early evening
and leaves the night sky dark for stargazing. We've a week of crescents
ahead. It's the best time of the month to make a date to enjoy the splendid
sky show from sunset through twilight and nightfall. Summer's long twilight
is still cresting, brilliant stars appear before dark and then, if you can
get away from light pollution, you'll find the Milky Way lights up after the
crescent moon sets.

Yesterday was "new" moon, the day that begins the lunar cycle, when the moon
is between the Earth and the sun. The side of the moon facing the sun is lit
and the sun's light does not shine on the side that faces Earth, so it is
invisible to us. As the moon moves in its orbit around the Earth a thin
crescent of light becomes visible low to the horizon following sundown. This
is the waxing moon that begins today as just a wisp of a glowing crescent.
Each day it becomes more robust until half moon (first quarter) on Saturday.

Sunset is at 8:12 pm today, moonset at 8:32 pm. The first crescent is so
close to the sun that even with a clear view to the western horizon it may
be lost in the sun's glare. However, everyday this week moonset is half an
hour later and sunset a minute earlier. By Wednesday, the crescent slides
under the horizon at 10:06 pm, when night falls, ushering in a fine view of
the south to north sweep of the Milky Way, our home galaxy.

Find a place away from artificial light to linger under the arc of stardust,
stars, lit gases and planets that is our place in the universe.

[Goanet] Music Listening Post, @ Gitanjali Gallery. . . .

2011-08-01 Thread Dan Driscoll

'Gitanjali Listening Post'

Gitanjali Gallery introduces 'THE LISTENING POST'. Basic rationale: With the
advance of MP3 technology and 'portable devices', many audio CDs remain idle
on domicile shelves most of the time. This experiment invites the public to
enjoy a wide (cosmopolitan) range of good music, and read accompanying
record jacket blurb-text about the music that they hear.

Gitanjali Gallery (behind Peoples' High School, opposite main entrance to
Panjim Inn) is a very 'people friendly' place, welcoming persons of every
age and station; with comfortable seating and desk arrangements, and the
option of having a Cappuccino and super-good 'almond-fudge tart' brought by
a friendly staff attendant.

Those who wish to be on line while playing music tracks, may search for
lyric texts and commentary. There are many internet options for this, but
Wikipedia will deliver on almost any significant song-title one can think
of, with historical commentary and links to the lyric texts themselves. In
this way one who may not be able to afford purchase of an MP3 player and
good CDs from sources such as Amazon or Flip Kart, may listen and learn
about Music, at the Gitanjali Listening Post.

The concept for Listening Post emerged from planning for a 'Lyrics Workshop'
but it is to be hoped that it may not 'end there'. Those with personal
collections of CD s that have had their tracks copied to MP3 'portable
devices' are invited to either lend or donate the CD's for the project;
whereupon Gitanjali will incorporate them into the Inventory for 'Listening
Post'.

Nor should the Listening Post project be viewed as a 'Gitanjali'
responsibility. Gitanjali, and its genial Curator Miriam Koshy, are hosting
the pilot project in their Gallery venue, but it should be of community
concern not to burden Gitanjali with administrative detail. Those with time
and expertise might wish to volunteer, for creation of an Index (Album
Title/Artist/Music Category/Production Date/Track Titles), to be available
in convenient album format and/or as a Word or Excel File. Thus, we might
see what is currently to be 'an experiment' grow and establish itself. To
this end the first donor of CD s (some sixty of them) will try to be on hand
a couple of times a week to play music tracks, make brief commentary about
same, and respond to queries. If Gitanjali can go with this some notice
should follow in local media.

Do please observe etiquette and courtesies. Put things back, when you are
finished at the Listening Post desk. Above all, do not attempt the copying
of music CDs. We are conscious of copyright protocols which 'brand' the
copying of music CDs as illegal---punishable with penalties. Our endeavor is
to provide an educational forum which will promote rather than impede
commercial and industrial progress in artistic production and distribution.
