Dear Carmen,

Further to this email, our car is expected back today and we are
planning a business trip to Panjim tomorrow. As we will be in the
Panjim area, we are wondering if you would have a few minutes to talk
to us both, about your plans, expectations, how far you have gotton at
this point in time, and if there is any help we may render in this
worthy project.

As we said before, we were really sad that we could not be at your
Talk on October 31st, despite making every effort to get to Panjim
later that day, and particularly so after weaving through queues of
cars to get petrol for the trip.

We look forward to your response,

Meanwhile, send our warm regards,

Betsy and Richard

Subject: Fwd: Requests for signatures on the Petition to UNESCO

Dear Carmen,

We wish to thank you very much for sending us the notification of
your talk in Panjim on October 31st, which, very, very sadly, we
were unable to attend as we had two major problems. After managing
to get some petrol in Margao and were on our way to Panjim, our car
developed serious problems and had to be towed to the SAI garage in
Nuven. It has not yet been returned because they found some further
items with major problems. In fact, we have just had a call from SAI
to say that they will not be delivering car until, the earliest,
tomorrow afternoon !!

We are really sad about this, particularly we had been so looking
forward to your talk and to gain some insight into this very
important subject, especially as we have recently retired to Goa,
from Kenya.

We now have a request to make. If, perchance, you happen to be in
our area, Cavelossim / Mobor area, down South, kindly make a stop
over to our home or we could meet you somewhere nearer home at a
place and time convenient to you.We would certainly not want to miss
the opportunity of meeting up with you.

Look forward to your response, meanwhile our warm regards,

Betsy and Richard

Dear Carmen,

It was great receiving your email and to note that you will be in
Goa on October 28th. Kindly let us know where you will be giving
your talk, in Panjim. We should be able to attend if it is at a
convenient time for travel in this mad Goa traffic. It will be
lovely to meet you before you go to Karnakata.

We could also inform a few of our new-found friends here in Goa and
together make an entertaining event of it.

Rest assured, we will continue to circulate your Petition and
anything connected with it.

Please give our warm regards to Selina, She has been our very good
family friend from Nairobi and we were sorry to lose her and her
talents to the United Kingdom.

Warm regards,

Betsy and Richard

Dears Richard and Betsy
So nice to receive your e-mail and thank you very much for your
support! Much appreciated!

I will be arriving in Goa on 29th October and will be giving a
talk in Panjim on the 31st before I go to Karnakata to take part in
a workshop on tourism. On my return to Goa I hope to continue to
campaign in Goa if the "crab mentality " does not bring me
down. Thanks for the explanation by the way - I too wondered about
the meaning of that phrase!

It has been an uphill struggle to get our community worldwide to
cooperate which is a shame! Together we can achieve much more and
the weight of global public opinion on some issues can be very
powerful ! Yet it is so hard to get Goans to take action!

Thanks again for your support and keep in touch!
With warm regards
Carmen

Hi Carmen,

Happy to say, we are forwarding this message too to the 99 email
ID addressees that we have around the world, which includes the
Goan Welfare Society, Nairobi who, in turn, have circulated it to
addressees in their huge email IDs book. Good luck with your
endeavours to get the Dudhsagar Falls and its environs declared
UNESCO's World Heritage Site.

We enjoyed our recent trip to Hampi, another UNESCO site and the
Falls on our return train journeys from Hospet. Our family from
the U.K. treated us to a four nights/five days trip. Daughter,
Cynthia, is married to John McDonnell, the current M.P. in the
Labour Party for Hayes and Harlington, Middx..

We are recent retirees in Goa, having arrived here from Kenya in
June, 2008. We are enjoying our stay immensely, because of the
affordable cost of living ... but are certainly hav

NO NEED

The President of Pakistan (Asif Ali Zardari) was driving round Islamabad came
across long queues of Pakistanis outside several embassies wanting visas and
entry permits to go abroad and to migrate foreign countries.

He got out of his car and joined a line to find out why so many people wanted
to leave the country.

No sooner did people see their President with them they left the queue to
return to their homes.

President Zardari asked them why they were doing so.

They replied: "If you are leaving Pakistan then there is no need for us to go"

REMEMBERING THE DEAD

Every religion have ceremonies for the dead. Some believe in life after
death, others in reincarnation and still others believe in being born into
animals you hated and ill treated during one`s life. Dead are important ,
but living are more important The Hindus have a ceremony on the death
anniversary, Christian pray for their dead regularly and a special day for
all souls day They believe that the life on earth is only preparation for
eternal life Are these ceremonies out of love or out of fear in order to
appease the souls of the dead ? Some are forced to pay their gratitude and
for all they inherit perhaps with a guilt complex According to the
traditions and customs now extinguished, the previous night on all souls
day, a banquet used to be spread in open, public places for the dead. All
the materials laid out were mostly stolen from the neighbors’, but nobody
objected to it . What then is the best way to remember and honour our dead
? Graves in the cemeteries are elaborately and tastefully decorate and
there were sponsored prizes for the best decorated graves The graves are
marked with artistic crosses and flowers and designed covers, Bones are
stored and adored in niches in the cemetery Some monuments also mark the
graves, even though they are temporary in nature, Schools , hospitals and
other Institutions are built or named in their memories. Scholarships,
prizes and permanent burses for prayers are established . Others give alms
and food to old aged homes, destitute, orphanages . On the occasion of
marriages a special food is laid out to the beggars in the memory of dead
The film stars are immortalized by their sounds and visions Singers are
alive with their recorded voices Politicians perpetuate their memories by
raising statues or naming public places and institutions, awards
Tournaments are also conducted in the memory of the dead

There is an hidden desire in every mortal to remain in the hearts and
minds of the living people The famous and the notorious are assured of
this immortality, but the common man feels the need to this earthly desire

The memory that serves a productive purpose ,benefiting and useful to the
society in some practical way, is more rewarding, fulfilling and is
desirable to be encouraged. The Memory of NOBEL scientist is an example of
social usefulness to humanity. It is difficult to go against traditions
because of social pressure, but traditions can be balanced with forward
vision of our acts in perpetuating the memories of our dear loved ones and
also repay our debt of gratefulness

Death due to old age, diseases , physical and emotional sufferings are a
great relief. Thousands die regularly due to natural calamities,
accidents, terrorism epidemics, wars and thus restore population balance

The world one day will come to an end .everything and memories on earth
that are protected , encapsulated will be out of trace and totally
obliterated. Any reference to the existence and position of earth in our
Galaxy , if at all available for some one to decipher in distant future
will lie in our probes beyond the solar system ,on other planets,
satellites very scantily. It is only our belief , traditions fears, and
social pressures that forces us to perpetuate memories in innumerable ways
and it will continue to the end of the world, which according to our own
life time is too distant even to imagine

Here's what happened in Goa, as reported on Bombay's Mid-Day Times today:

A group of engineering students from Bangalore check into a Baga Hotel and
then take a beach walk.
They are accosted by police and frisked for illegal items.
Not finding any, they are extorted for a huge bribe on pain of being
arrested on trumped-up charges.
Seeing no money forthcoming from them, their wallet is robbed of Rs 3,000.
Eventually a complaint is made to DySp Mapari through a police source in
Bangalore.
The criminal policemen apologize and return the money.
They apparently walk happily away. No report of any action against them.
The DySp requests the victims to make a complaint (this has probably already
been done, but to no avail).
Back to square one for the wunderkind Goa Police until the next shameful act
is perpetrated.

It's a mystery anyone goes to tour Goa. What's the attraction? The clowns
who masquerade as police, the deaths by road accidents, the Delhi-belly, the
poisoned fish, the polluted rivers, the pock-marked hills or just a glimpse
of the clowns at government house?

I hope the Regional Plan will be rightly opposed by the people of Goa since it
was written top-down by politicians, miners, builders, and the destructive
tourism lobby whose anti-Goan policies have destroyed Goa at an accelerated
pace. The document should have been written bottom-up at the panchayat level
with local input.

Konkani Pop Scene
===
(from the pages of the WEST COAST TIMES, Margao, 26 NOV 1978)

ALFRED ROSE'S *Jhelo*
by S. Valmiki Faleiro

The eighth edition of *Kantarancho Jhelo*, a booklet of popular Konkani songs by
Alfred Rose, has hit the stands. The booklet contains the words and scores of
songs
from the Konkani pop singer's LP record cut in March last and a stereo cassette
published more recently.

The *Jhelo* is the only book of its type available for Konkani song lovers. The
previous editions of the book, without exception, sold well. With all the
LP-recorded
and cassette-taped songs in it generally meeting a good response - some were
actually instant hits - this edition of the *Jhelo* was long awaited.

I asked Alfred Rose about the origin of the *Jhelo* when he visited the offices
of
the West Coast Times the other day. Said the pop singer:

"Many fans kept asking for the words of my songs. Then someone suggested that
I print the words in the form of a booklet. I did. It surpassed my expectations.
Goaded with the success, I brought out two more editions.

"Then some friends started asking for the music score together with the words.
So
I had the fourth edition with both the lyrics and notes, specially printed at
Mangalore.
But here was the case of the father, son and the ass. (You can't satisfy
everybody at
the same time). Some people now began complaining that they didn't understand
the
music notes. Since then I have stuck to the easiest way out: I print the words
of only
the published and well-known songs."

This ace recording star of HMV - he has some 500 songs cut in discs - has had no
problem with the *Jhelo* ever since.

Included in its latest edition are the words of 17 songs recorded in a novel
stereo
cassette. Produced by himself on an imported consignment of TDK cassettes,
Alfred
Rose says he got the idea as hundreds of Gulf-returning Goans brought cassette
players with them. With cassettes coming cheaper than vinyl records, the singer
hopes that the idea will click.

Alfred Rose took to singing, as also the stage, at an early age - while at
school at St.
Xavier's, Bombay. The knowledge of music and his father have been the two assets
of his life, he says. Having studied music, he does not face the problem that
many
contemporary singers do - of being at the mercy of music composers and setters.

The singer's father, Mr. AMB Rose, an established character-actor in his own
right,
helped his son find a firm foothold on the Konkani stage. The senior Rose, now
living
a retired life, was recently decorated with the Citizens Award by the Municipal
Corporation of Bombay.

Alfred Rose soon made his own music arrangements and had his own *Swing Band*.
There was no looking back, he says.

The major factor that shot Alfred Rose to popularity, perhaps, is the clarity
of his
voice. And coupled with his wife, Rita, the result is part of the history of
Konkani pop
music. Nobly carrying on the tradition of his father, Alfred's sons too have
not lagged
behind, even if at an amazingly tender age. Schubert and Englebert are names oft
heard over Akashvani's Konkani request programmes.

The family is slated to stage the first Musical Show in January in Bombay. Asked
as to what made him think in terms of such a show, Alfred says, "our dramas are
dominated by songs." So he thought of rendering a few songs, with skits spaced
in
for good measure.

With the name and fame they command, there is little doubt that Alfred, Rita,
Schubert and Englebert will carry their family show to a rosy success. (ENDS)

Of course, just about anything is possible, even if perhaps 'improbable';
Marley was a devotee of Hailee Selassie, King of Ethiopia; my Goan
Dentist's (Dr. Gregory Periera) grandfather was regular visitor to the
Ethiopian Royal Palace as supplier of silks and fine textiles from the the
Orient. Dr. Greg's mother was of Greek family, and most likely met with his
Papa in Ethiopia. It would not surprise me if Bob Marley had friends among
the 'Goan Diaspora'. Someone might manage at least a Masters' Thesis on
that.
