Preface:
1: Rajan Parrikar's post was spot on.
2: Not very sure if I, personally, would react to anything reported in
a 'paid news' rag - without verifying it myself.
3: Am quite sure, however, that I found the following from Gomes et al
very disappointing - to say the least:" Tejpal can sleep with his
mother". Why do we lower ourselves by making such awful statements and
thereby joining the company on the uncouth and the ignorant?

Like Rajan Parrikar (and Soter D'Souza), I too believe that the posts
of indignation were scripted by zonncars of Rip Wan Winklenagar.

It is possible, however, that I am in error and that the Winkle-clan
have, in fact, reacted to the following (for example, and in random
order) and that I missed their reactions:

a: IFFI - which threw open the secondary gateway to Goa
b: The mining situation
c: The violation of environmental safeguards by Big Business
d: The various noise and alcohol fests being held by these loud drunks
(from without) in Goa
e: The funding provided to these degrading functions by the Goa Govt.
f: The collosal waste of funds (please vide Lionel Messias' researched
posts) by these babus
g: The enforced bandhs in a territory which claims it is liberated.
h: The corruption which is rife even at the lowest level.
i: The state of the GMC hospital in Bambolim
j: The block which prevents Goan Catholics from visiting the Anjediva church
k: The sale of Catholic Church properties to Big Business - without consultation
l: The handing over of the Old Goa churches to ASI.
m: Dabolim!
n: The movies Bobby, Julie et al

etc etc etc

ps: Goans (esp Goan women) have consistently been portrayed in Indian
movies and publications as meant "for the taking". Goan men (in the
Indian psyche) are just drunks who "break out in a song after feni at
lunch time before proceeding to a siesta" or "only cooks and butlers".

No wonder, the ignoramuses get shocked that Goans are also Physicians,
Engineers, Lawyers, Scientists, Academics etc who have excelled and
continue to excel all over the world (except perhaps in Goa).

*NDR (German TV broadcaster): Vasco da Gama and Portugal's departure into
the unknown*

In July 1497 the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama departed from Lisbon to
one of the most adventurous voyages of world history. With four ships the
28-year-old captain wanted to find a sea route to India - on the eastern
route around Africa.

*LETTER of the German citizen Mr. H. Muster to the Indian Ambassador in
Berlin*

In his letter (in German) Mr. Muster focuses on three subjects. He
complains that it is difficult for tourists to obtain visas for India
especially for longer periods. He also says that many tourists would like
to come to India two or even three times a year, but that this is almost
impossible because of the two month's gap between visas.

The second subject of his letter are Goa's waste and waste water problems.
Mr. Muster compares the "rich state of Goa" to the clean and neat town of
Sirsi/Karnataka where roads are extremely well maintained and digs along
the roads drain the surface water - to the contrary of what he observes in
Goa. In the end Mr Muster complains about Goan taxis and tucktuck not
having meters and thus tourists being cheated.

Mr Muster ends his letter with the sentence: It is due to Goa that the very
positive image of India is turned to be a negative one.

This topic is too important to be converted into a ego clash between
individuals, so permit me to ignore the flame-baits thrown hereinbelow
:-)

* Is Konkani a difficult language to learn?

I would say that this depends on a number of factors: (i) what script
it is being taught in, and what script/s the learner is familiar with
(ii) the teaching material and tutors available to teach it.

Both are very complex issues in today's Goa, but I doubt that these
can't be tackled, given suitable political, ideological and
intellectual will.

* Can foreigners learn it?

It depends on their determination and motivation. If Indians can learn
Russian or Dutch, this is definitely not an impossibility or a major
challenge.

Of course, we need to go beyond foreigners. Many of us Goans in Goa
too need a learning of the language, and so do a large section of the
expats, perhaps specially those who have lived outside Goa for over a
generation.

Unfortunately, a bigger problem with language in today's Goa is the
attempt to "delegitimise" some forms of speech. Why does Sashti (or
the Pednem variant) need to be looked down upon and laughed at? I
would say these are just hegemony-building exercises

At the end of the day, those interested should take such issues
forward. It was nice to see Miguel Braganza and others underline the
need for simple texts for children in the Romi Script, at a recent
meeting, if the language is to move ahead!

Cause .In true Living God We Trust..and in his Holy name we put our

Last evening, some of us were talking of doctors from the old days in
the Betalbatim- Majorda-Cansaulim area and someone mentioned the Dias
doctors from Betalbatim. The chat started with Dr. Barbosa (his months
mind was on Saturday) and talk veered to the old days when the only
doctor apparently was someone from Majorda. Then someone remembered
the two Dias doctors (cousins) from BetalbatimNolasco's father and
the other was mio great-grand pop.
Nolasco's father went on to live some years but my great grand-father
passed on as the result of a plague that hit the area (apparently
treating patients with plague).

I never met the late Nolasco nor did I like his songs (too Tom Johnes,
I adore William de Curtorim)but never dare mention this to Concani
lovers who are very fond of his lyrics and his style of singing!

Am trying to find out details about Nolasco, what his life was like
(more curiosity); apparently he was an oddity in that one rarely heard
a baatkar sing popular songs.

Work……..at present from the total population of around 5 Lakh EastIndians
there are anywhere between 1 to 4 percent eastindians in western

their well maintained bungalows in bombay………once in a few years they
occasionally come to Bombay to meet their family members and they also
donate a few thousand bucks to their local church and also invite the
parish priest for some good pork mutton chicken dinner & a glass of foreign

associations which are genuinely involved in protecting the last few bits
of eastindian culture & history in bombay which includes protecting the
historic portuguese era crosses near eastindian villages from being
demolished by the BMC.

The Shiv Sena which has been controlling the BMC for the last 25 years
encouraged the growth of slums & illegal constructions in bombay and when
they came to power in Maharashtra state in 1995 they started the Slum
rehabilitation scheme to reward slumdwellers with free apartments of 225
sq. ft. and also rewarded their builder friends with more Floor Space Index
& vacant lands.……….the shiv sena is responsible for all the filth, garbage,
watershortage, slums, illegalconstructions, potholedroads, etc in
bombay……the shiv sena also changed the british names of the city, airport,
stations, bridges, streets, roads, zoos, libraries, museums  to marathi
namesthe shiv sena also ensured all records in BMC, Collectorsoffice,
citysurveyoffice, etc were changed from English to Marathi……the shiv sena
also ensured only marathi people got most of the jobs in bombay……….shiv
sena has similar plans for Goa.

After the Muslims retaliated in March-93 with Bombs one of which exploded
near shiv sena bhavan to take revenge for the 92-93 riots the shiv sena not
only stopped bothering muslims but in order to maintain goodwill with
muslims the shiv sena increased the floor space index of Mosques in
bombay…but the bombs that have been exploding in bombay during the last
10 or 12 years has nothing to do with the 92-93 riots……these bombings have
more to do with the Gujarat riots, Kashmir puzzle & Taliban
problem…….ofcourse the Pakistan Army & ISI are indirectly responsible for
the bombings because it is they who provide the military & logistical
support to muslim groups in India to carry out the bombings which everybody
knows.

At present the Congress Party and the BJP are locked in a game of
Corruption & Terrorism………the congress party through central security
agencies has been exposing the links of bjp & its hindutva allies in terror
activities against muslims & christians and the BJP through the RTI
activists & some babas are exposing the various Scams of the Congress
party……since the congress & bjp are two sides of the same coin sooner both
these parties will do some secret deal of you stop bothering us and we stop
bothering you……..if politicians wanted to serve people they would have been
social workers and not politicians………..inflation corruption overpopulation
femalefoeticide slums blackmoney these are some issues which no politicians
will be interested in controlling…….the politicians are only interested in
passing laws acts bills rules in favour of their builder friends &
corporate friends & other friends in return for electionfunds, flats, cars,
gold, etc etc etc……..the election system is just a formality in India to
show the world that India is a democratic country……the real power will
always remain with those who have moneypower & musclepower.

Bishops & Parish Priests are monopolizing the Church estates and treating
it as their own property and are indulging in its sale-purchase without the
consent of the community……….Catholic Missionaries are utilizing the funds
received from America, Canada, & Europe for evangelization activities & not
for the benefit of catholics……….Catholic Church run Institutions including
catholic schools are not prepared to reserve 50% seats for catholics……….the
vatican appoints the bishops the bishops appoints the parish priests and
who appoints the missionaries nobody knows……….there has to be a system in
place in India where the bishops, priests, missionaries are appointed by
local catholic parishione

When the BJP president, Nitin Gadkari claims that the party is not against 
minorities but against terrorists, does he mean to say that the christians 
being attacked in Gujarat, MP, Mangalore and Orissa are terrorists? Is he 
implying that by denying christian churches and institutions to flourish in BJP 
ruled states, the party and its affiliates are preventing terrorism?   Is it 
that by supporting BBSM to deny minority educational institutions in Goa from 
getting grants for English medium, the BJP  is tackling terrorism?
According to news reports the desperate BJP has entrusted some Congress traitor 
with the task of wooing christians in Goa towards voting for the BJP. Will 
chrisitians act so shamelessly and cheaply to forget the recent communal 
remarks of this BBSM member (now BJP) who was spitting venom against christians 
and ascribing false motives to christian educational institutions over the

Thanks, Miguel, for the update of what finally actually happened at Saligao.

I like your idea of not resting with the victory of not having the Tomatina
in effect.

I communicated with a cousin who lives in Spain - who told me that on
account of the EU controlling the produce, the tomatoes go waste anyways.
So I guess it's about a bigger issue on hand, about what this EU control of
the produce is all about - which results in tomatoes going waste. Remember
the Tourism Minister said they'd get tomatoes that are not rotten and not
edible?

The peg on which the Tomatina finally got cancelled (of course apart from
people pressure which was the overwhelming force) is the wastage of food,
be it at Karnataka or Goa. These organisers could in all
likelihood reinvent the idea, if it not be in Karnataka or Goa, but in
other parts of india, to say that they are using tomatoes that are
certified to be not edible, thanks to mechanisms that will be set up like
the EU's mechanisms - which as you see easily get aped in India.

It's the same thing that happened with the food certifiying mechanisms
- they, for instance, sent most small-time local potato chips-makers, even
in Goa, out of the market.

Worth pursuing. It just might open the Pandora's box and help the world
see how the tourism industry with its innocuous face is also a means for
spreading globalisation with tentacles that strike at our very existence
and identity.

The Corrupt Goa government I think has already obligated land to the builders, 
outsiders etc for huge illegitimate monetary gains. Not to mention that Real 
Estate always gives them a huge opportunity, to turn their Black Money into 
White. So they will never allow the true plans submitted by Goans via the so 
called democratic process on RP2021, to be implemented. So in my opinion, they 
are playing deceitful games 1) Keep on putting in points where they know people 
will protest, so as to give them time to continue with the current laws to 
build their atrocities 2) Put in their atrocious plan now hoping Goans are 
fools to accept them. I wonder if these Anti Goans realise that peoples 
patience is running out and not live in the illusion that the traditional 
susegad nature of Goans, will allow them to continue looting/plundering Goa and 
our Identity. We need a real revolution to get rid of these Political Pimps who 
are selling Goa. And for the latter, this must be fight not only by Goans in 
Goa, but also the large NRI Goan community and Diaspora Overseas.
