The book by A.J.Barker was republished recently under a new title: 'The
First Iraq War,'  although the original in 1965 was 'The Neglected War.'
Why Turkish Mesopotamia in 1915: the arguements were complex, but it all
boiled down to oil !
There was a need to add a new front to the German war in France, and stop the
planned railroad from Berlin to Baghdad, one that would supply the inevitable
invasion of Persia and India. What was paramount, however, was protection
of Imperial Oil's Ahwaz/Abadan oil complex in the Persian protectorate, and so
an army drawn from India seized territory around Basra in 1915.
Now you cannot hold a good soldier back, and Baghdad beckoned. Soon Gen.
Townshend, commander of the 6th Poona Division had taken Amarna, and Nasriya
followed. Only Kut,on the Tigris stood in the way to the big prize. There,
Townshend hoped to repeat his famouf feat in Chitral, where he had forced back
an Afghan siege in 1895. Heavily outgunned by the Turks, poorly supplied by
both Simla and Whitehall, he surrendered along with 13,000 men, most of whom
would not survive their harsh Turkish captivity.
There was a public outcry in London, and soon a counterattack was planned by
the new C/C, Gen. Stanley Maude, with a huge new Indian force. The units
included the 2nd Poona Div., the 3rd Lahore Div., the 67th Punjabis, 7th
Rajputs, 51st Sikhs, 2nd Gurkhas, 7th Meerut and Brigades of Dogras, Hariana
Lancers, Jats and Bengals. Six thousand mules and horses were transported on
the armed river boats Sushan, Julnar, Sumana and Shaitan(!). Turkey surrendered
after two years of hard fighting to the piping sound of their band's 'God Save
the Queen !'
Here is Barker's post script: Divisions of the Indian Corps had seen hard
fighting in France and Flanders fought under heartbreaking conditions and
accepted monstrous casualties. As was well said in an official telegram They
did all that flesh and blood could do.
He goes on to add: Half a million Indians fought and brought new freedom to a
nation to be called Iraq; to shatter the German dream of an empire in the
Orient, over thirty thousand of them died in the desert wastes.
Dr. Jose Siqueira of the 17th Mahrattas, returned to many years
Aldona service with his young Basra born Russo/German wife after
demobilization.  Selma/Fred - I knew Donna Lucia well, and she spoke flawless
Konkani, to the end, 1975.

Joining the war of words with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the BJP on
Wednesday charged her with paying mere lip service to fighting corruption and
holding her equally responsible for the “inaction” of the government on the
issue.

“Only talking at Congress conclaves, public meetings and in Parliament that you
will fight corruption and then not taking any step will not do,” BJP
spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said while reacting to Sonia’s speech in
Uttarakhand. The Congress president was due to travel to the hill state but
cancelled her programme due to ill health. Her speech, in which she said that
mere speeches were not enough to end graft, was then read out there.

“The UPA chairperson has said in her speech at a programme in Uttarakhand that
public speeches will not end corruption. I think she has read out our
statement. We have been saying for long that corruption is not going to end by
speeches,” Hussain said.

Just Matata takes on Kenya Goans

A review by Ben Antao
ben.an...@rogers.com

[Received via the Goa Book Club
http://groups.google.com/group/goa-book-club ]

Just Matata by Braz Menezes of Toronto is an autobiographical
novel that blends an impressive mix of memoir, travel and
social history of what life was like in British colonial
Kenya. Since this is not a novel in the traditional sense
and form of fiction, my review will depart from commenting on
its fictional structure, plot or conflict. Instead, I will
pick and choose, as though I were at a buffet table, what has
excited my curiosity and whetted my appetite.

At the outset the author has supplied a map of colonial East
Africa and an introduction as follows:

Early in the 20th century, the rulers of British
East Africa are desperate for administrators and
accountants; bartenders and bakers; cooks and
clerks; musicians and mechanics; engineers and
  tailors, doctors and doormats.

The people of Goa (Portuguese India) fit the bill
perfectly and they create no matata (trouble in
Swahili). They speak English, wear western attire
and drink Scotch whisky. They play card games and
cricket. Although they gyrate to the mando and
dulpod, they also dance the lancers, the waltz and
the foxtrot. They are Catholics and considered
reliable to handle purse strings. They stay with
their faith and never stray into politics. They do
what they are told and are always loyal and docile.
Above all, when compared to the cost of British
labour, they can be had cheap—very cheap indeed.
They flock to East Africa by the hundreds.

What Braz (a noble name this!) has in mind of course are
those Kenya Goans who, in spite of being subjected to racial
segregation and low wages, lived a life of ease and pleasure,
sheltered and coddled by the colonial masters, who worked in
the civil service and for all practical purposes implemented
the colonial regulations, including being couriers who
unloaded the metaphorical white man's burden onto the backs
of the black African; Goans who played and drank and danced
in their exclusive gymkhanas, institutes and clubs, and being
Catholics also helped raise funds to build and then prayed in
the churches whose pews were segregated for the whites, Goans
and Africans, as per the rules of segregation enacted by the
white-skinned masters and dispensed by their brown-skinned,
willing enablers. For Kenya Goans it was a life devoutly to
be wished for. Oh, how I envy their lot, not having been
privy to such good life!

The author's characterization of Kenya Goans gave me pause to
reflect. Having been born and raised in Portuguese colonial
Goa, I can say that the Goans of my generation witnessed no
coddling, no sheltered status, and no favoured treatment from
the Portuguese rulers. A few who managed to master the
lingua Portuguesa perhaps benefited under the colonial regime.

Still, unlike their Kenya cousins, we Goans could not be
labelled as loyal and docile. We suffered the Portuguese
dictatorship with equanimity in the sense that what cannot be
cured must be endured. As we say in Konkani, Noxibantlem
chukona. And although we prayed inside and outside the many
churches, chapels and roadside crosses that embrace the
villages of Goa, our status in life was defined by elitism
and casteism, nevertheless a form of segregation inherited
from our Hindu brethren but refined and polished by the
Portuguese influence and Catholicism, as Braz points out in
the book.

The novel seductively subtitled Sin, Saints and Settlers is
the first in a trilogy. It is narrated by Lando, the
ten-year-old son of Chico who jumps ship in Mombasa in 1928
on a journey from Goa to Mozambique, another Portuguese
colony in south-east Africa.

Because Lando tells the story from the first person point of
view (POV), he's hampered from crawling inside the minds of
his family members—father, mother, sister—as well as his
relatives and friends. This denies the narrator the freedom
to show certain scenes three-dimensionally, as he might have
through a multiple POV, scenes such as going on a safari from
Nairobi through Kabete, Limuru and Nakuru, and fishing with
his white friend Jimmy in Kericho.

However, when Lando is shipped to Goa for his

Special Status for Goa
More in:

Panorama

By Mário Cabral e Sá
The Goa Rajya Sabha MP, Mr Shantaram Naik has an undeniable virture: loyalty
to the Congress whatever its fortunes or misfortunes, a rare virtue in this
era of chameleon politicians, who survive on their mimetism. Tell me how
many politicians are in power and I will tell you that Mr Shantaram Naik is
the only one who has never switched his political loyalties.
Mr Pratapsing Rane is a close second. He was handpicked by Dayanand
Bandodkar in one of his many intuitive streaks, so that his MGP would have
well educated MLAs to continue the good work he had done for Goa. His
daughter Sashikala, his heir apparent, was very intelligent. She has a
string of degrees tailing her name, which ends with Kakodkar, the surname of
her former husband - Gurudatt - who she divorced, forfeiting according to
recent SC judgement the right to wear it. She or so D B thought would have
by her side the young MBA Pratapsing Rane on whom she could lean in times of
stress. Besides, there would be a whole line up of young second generation
Bahujan Samajists. Dayanand Narvekar, a promising law graduate doing his
apprenticeship with one of the leading lawyers of Mumbai; Dilkush Desai, a
law graduate too, though not of the same level of finesse as Narvekar;
Shankar Laad, a lawyer who had already made his mark in the Goan courts
where
he was practising; Ramakant Khalap, a lawyer practicing in Mapusa and an
extremely articulate debater; Narain Fugro, strictly speaking a Brahmin and
therefore not really a Bahujan Samaj member.
If so far DB's instincts had never failed him, the worms started to crawl
out of the woodwork the moment he was felled by a massive heart attack.
Pratapsing Rane realised that he was not cut out to be the second string to
Sashikala's bow. And so he left the MGP as decently as he could: he resigned
from Sashikala's cabinet and then from his MLAship. Others followed with
various levels of decency. Only Ramakant Khalap and Babuso Gaonkar finally
remained loyal to their mother party - at least for a while. A stage came
when MGP was reduced to 2 MLAs in a house of 30. Even Sashikala deserted the
sinking ship.
That much said kudos to Shantaram Naik for one, remaining scrupulously loyal
to the Congress and, two, to the Puruxotoma Cacodcar group, which was for a
separate state and Konkani.
Writing long pieces for the press was his passion. Like all aspiring prosers
he began with letters to the editor on all imaginable political topics.
Last Panorama, the Sunday magazine of this paper, carried a full page cover
story arguing - actually it is this memorandum to the Prime Minister, Dr
Manmohan Singh - fairly ably we thought for a special status for Goa along
with the other eleven small states that already enjoy the privilege.
The memorandum (cover story) ends on a rather weak note. Special Category
status needs to be examined on case to case basis and the State of Goa
should be seriously considered for the inclusion in the category from that
angle to enable it to get appropriate Central grants for keeping its
development on an even keel.
As the late and brilliant bureaucrat and planner Alban Couto often told me,
a point on which I cent percent agreed with him, is that the special status
was Goa's by right. It is Goans who threw the baby out of the tub along
with the bath water.
I had my reasons, Alban had his. Alban thought that soon after liberation
Goan politicians squabbled over its merger - in Maharashtra? In Karnataka?
That, indeed, is a fact, except that a 1966, 5-judge full constitutional
bench of the Supreme Court decided that Goa had been acquired, use of
force, an act of war, and not liberated. My point is that a conqueror
has to be magnanimous in victory, even more so because it was a war never
fought, not by Goans in any case. And, therefore, it would be unfair for
the conqueror to punish Goans for a conquest they were never a party to.
Now that Shantaram Naik is an MP, albeit of the Rajya Sabha, of the ruling
party, a man as brilliant as Dr Manmohan Singh would have conceded, fairly
and squarely, that Goa should be granted the separate status, not merely

Theme for a (Gandhian) dream...

Milan's Malpensa airport is a bit like Ahmedabad airport before it was
modernized. We arrived there on a hot and sultry day and waited forever to
retrieve our bags. I was a bit grumpy; who would expect this in Milan, the
world's fashion hot spot? What next, I asked my wife? Rickshaw guys milling
about the exit? I want my money back!

Within minutes of emerging into the arrival area, my frown disappeared. We
were greeted with warm smiles by Beat (pronounced 'bey-ut' though our
daughters often say his name to rhyme with neat) and Raul, the Swiss
component of our family. As we loaded our bags into Beat's Audi, I looked
forward to the drive that skirted the city to take us into the hills of
Switzerland, headed for Tessin, aka Ticino.

The picturesque Ticino canton is spread across mountainous country and is
the southernmost part of Switzerland. Called Italian Switzerland, the
region, I am surprised to learn, is, after Zurich and Geneva, the third
largest financial center in the country.

It took us all of 90 minutes, including a stop in a farm with a tumble down
barn where we bought fresh fruit and vegetables, to get to Al Ruscello, the
house by the brook, in the heavenly little village of Gordola in the Locarno
district. With a view of the northern tip of Lago (Lake) Maggiore, the house
is Beat and our niece Lisa's family home. On the northern side, it is
surrounded by vineyard slopes that grow the local Merlot grapes. Ticino is
the warmest part of Switzerland.

Lisa and Beat come here to get away from the hustle and bustle of Zurich,
where they live.

Really? They need to get away from a picture-postcard city that is
consistently voted the most livable city in the world? I guess it takes all
kinds. Maybe the civilized 400,000 residents; maybe the smooth flowing
traffic; perhaps the quiet neighborhoods and the picturesque lakefront get
to them and they want to go rough it out in Ticino. But it's just more of
the same: quiet, easy, beautiful...only on a much smaller scale; Gordola's
population is just 5,000.

Even for just 5,000 people, there is a wealth of local infrastructure. Some
of it is evident from the balcony of Al Ruscello, which offers a view of
local trains, commuter railroads, private boats and ferries, civilian planes
and helicopters for medical emergencies. And it's not just in Ticino; it's
all over the country: a display of civic extravagance that towers above the
fabled wealth of Swiss banks and the affluence of its citizens.

Meanwhile, the superstructure is unobtrusive: the grocery store, the butcher
shop, the bakery, the fruit and vegetable store appear modest and innocuous
but are lavish with an abandonza of local products. It was this local
aspect that also struck me when we visited Ticino five years ago.

In a column for a national newspaper, I wrote: ...isn't this what
Mohandas Gandhi said when he talked about...villages being self sufficient?
'Every village will be a republic... (It) has to be self sustained and
capable of managing its affairs even to the extent of defending itself
against the whole world,' he wrote in the Harijan, some 65 years ago, on
July 28, 1946. So while the Swiss people exult in their village republics,
they also have a global presence with world beating companies in
pharmaceuticals, chemicals, machine tools, textile machinery and also in
lifestyle brands like Swatch, Omega, Mont Blanc and even ultimately the
Swiss Army.

Sadly, in India, villages are dens of filth and inequity; major stumbling
blocks to progress. As far as global brands, India now finally boasts some
companies like Infosys, Wipro and Tata. In political terms, self sufficiency
in India means cronyism and a seller's market. But the Swiss version, which
I experienced in Tessin, was modern and enlightened. I thought to myself:
isn't this exactly what Gandhi advocated?

Activist Swami Agnivesh a week ago has written to Pope Benedict XVI a
letter (which is now in the public domain) asking him to impose a
moratorium on religious conversions, saying such acts ignite strong
reactions in countries like India……….its time lay catholics also started
writing letters to Pope Benedict calling upon him to instruct the Clergy,
Missionaries, Caritas, Catholic Relief Services, etc to stop
evangelization activities in India for the next 100 years and utilize the
church wealth, assets, funds, resources, vacant church properties foreign
donations for the benefit of poor catholic parishioners reserve 50%
seats for catholics in catholic institutions including catholic
schools…….obviously the Pope will ignore such letters……..so the only option
left with lay catholics in India is to write letters to PrimeMinister
Members of Indian Parliament to enact a law making it illegal for a foreign
power to appoint Bishops for India…….. whether it is the Bishop of the
diocese or the Parish Priest of the Church these people should be selected
elected by local catholics of the diocese then only the lay catholics
will have some control on how the church should be run in India……..those
non-catholics in India who want to convert to catholicism on their own free
will or want to visit a catholic church like many non-catholics in bombay
do by visiting the Mount Mary Church at Bandra are most welcome but why
waste church resources on allurement fraudulent conversion activities.

Inspite of loosing all their agricultural lands in bombay………..and inspite
of the Clergy Missionaries ignoring their plight……….and inspite of all
the Harassment, intimidations and strong arm tactics by the Maharashtra
state, Bombay municipal corp, collectors office, politicians,
buildersmafia, landmafia, politicalgoons slumlords……..the Christian
Natives of bombay locally known by the name EastIndians (
www.bombayland.blogspot.com ) have neither abandoned the Christian
faith and neither fear to give their children Christian names………..The
command to endure suffering is just another part of a Christian's life.
Faithful Christians of all ages have suffered; we are not the only ones. We
should expect more sufferings to come because we are living in a country
which is hostile to Christians Christianity. The only sad part is that
the Catholic Clergy/Missionaries in Bombay are not using the church wealth,
vacant church properties, foreign donations, etc for the benefit of poor
christian parishioners……..but yes the eastindians ( www.east-indians.com
) need to become ambitious, aggressive, combative politically active and
agitate for their rights including demanding 5% quota in Government jobs in
Bombay.

Swami Agnivesh should also write letters to leaders of all right wing hindu
groups to deploy their cadres at the Pakistan China borders……….and write
letters to Builders, Corporates Industrialists in India to disclose how
much money they have donated to Politicians every year along with the names
of the politicians……..and write letters to the Election Commission to
disqualify a candidate if he is in construction business or
directly/indirectly associated with the builders lobby……..and write letters
to Election Commission to prevent anyone who has encroached land and
created slums from voting during elections………and write letters to Prime
Minister all MPs to strictly enforce the two child policy and pass
stringent laws against corruption – femalefoeticide/infantifice –
blackmoney – etc……..and abolish the land acquisition act……..and write
letters to Government to abolish the tax system instead print extra
currency notes to pay the salaries pensions of Government servants………and
write letters to Maharashtra govt. to dismantle the incestuous network of
the politicians – landmafia – slumlords – rationoffice – bureaucrats –
police – collectorsoffice.

[Goanet] The Cries for HELP from PEOPLE OF GOA to BAN MINING have been heard. Thank you Justice M.B. Shah

http://www.goasu-raj.org/gen/news/2448.asp

Dear Justice M.B. Shah,

You came to Goa bringing with you the anti-mining Tsunami and just as well.
And you heard the cries of the suffering people of Goa.
The above memorandum was the first one you held in your hands no sooner than
you had taken your august seat at the Goa Legislative Assembly conference
hall ( which was too small to accommodate the crying masses of Goa) on the
17th. September, 2011. But before you put your eyes to this memorandum,
heavens opened to bring down loads and loads of paper on your table. Today
we sincerely believe that you have gone through the above signed memorandum
handed to you, depicting the curse that mining has brought to the green
landscape of GOA and its lovely people and as a result of it all, the
dark clouds of doom have covered the skies of Goa today, over the rascals
who made merry both as Politicians and Miners along with their stooges and
chamchas.

Please do not stop at only banning mining completely from the face of Goa
but see that Goa's Chief Minister Digamber Kamat sees the inside of the
bars of the Aguada jail just like Yeddiurappa of Karnataka. But he will find
himself with no company and will feel lonely. We do not want that to
happen to this lovely man. So please give him good company of Joaquim
Alemao, Vishwajeet Rane, Jitendra Deshprabhu, Anil Salgaokar, Audhoot
Timblo, Dinar Tarcar and others so that they may PARTY together and shed
all the unnecessary weight they have gained at the cost of the blood and
tears of ordinary Goans.

But please do not rest at that only. Bring in the ED [ENFORCEMENT
DIRECTORATE] by the truckloads and unleash it on these hyenas so that they
may be stripped of their ill-gotten gains for once'. Let them get to the
place from where they have started from. Ed will un-earth a literal gold
mine. Let the people of Goa, especially those who have been made dependent
on mining get minimum Rs. 25,000/- per family per month until the gold mine
is over and which will take more than 25 years. Let all the the mining
trucks be auctioned and gotten rid of from the face of GOA. These have
done enough damage already. Come to think of it, even in a peaceful village
of MOIRA, where there is no trace of mining, we have giant mining trucks
coming and going on day to day basis to take a breather from the hectic
mining activities. And they disturb us at all hours. So good riddance to bad
rubbish.

Also employ all those people ( Goans only) who were inducted in this vile
business of selling our Goan soil to China to clean the places up and start
replantation and aforestation of the death pits these rascals ( Goan as well
as from Delhi) have left us to drown. Make sure that all the outsiders who
have been attracted to Goa in the McKenna's gold rush so to speak be
dispatched back to their states and villages to make do with what they have
dug out in Goa.

In the coming months let Goans not see the silly sight of the HAND that has
punched us in our faces, let the KOMAL that has enchanted us with its fancy
dance in the lake that is Goa wither and die, let the CLOCK which has
shown us the wrong times find its place in the garbage dump, BUT let 'DON
PANNA' of the OPINION POLL of 1967 which kept our GOA to ourselves to love
and to enjoy, multiply and flourish to replenish the forests that have been
depleted, to support the wild animals that have been forced to visit our
villages, to give green ambience to our landscape and roads which have been
bloodied by the mining dust, to rejuvenate our water resources to flow out
clean, milk-white and clear once again in years, to make our agricultural
fields smile with paddy and other vegetable produce to stop our dependence
on Hubli, Karwar and Belgaum, to allow our school children to walk-run and
stroll to their respective schools free from the fear of not being crushed
under the monster wheels of monster mining trucks and earth moving machinery
, and last but not the least to give our two-wheeler and four-wheeler
commuters a clean and speedy passage to go about their daily chores with
care-free abandon.

Dear Floriano,

As an office-holder of a responsible and upstanding political party, I
suggest you go with your party president to Delhi to meet the Joint Chief of
the Armed Forces with a message that the country has had enough of the
current version of Indian democracy and needs a spell of Military Rule for
such time until India can be brought to a decent standard of governance.

Take along with you a catalog of the horrific crimes against the nation both
in terms of finances and criminal acts for the last 5 years that have
wounded the fiber of the republic.

No doubt it may not have an immediate effect, but if the national press gets
hold of the story, events may be initiated to rectify the current sorry
state of affairs and guess who can take the credit of putting this in
motion.

You will not be contravening any law, since asking is not a crime and no
conspiracy is hatched as your actions will be in the public domain.

Roland.

Mario,

This talk is all bull. I mean about not giving tickets to the sitting guys.

Jagmit Singh Brar must have put in his order with the suitcase manufacturing

companies for brand-new suitcases to carry all the loot to New Delhi.
The more he delays committing tickets, the more the suitcases get heavier.
He does not have to go to the Casino ships on the Mandovi to gamble. He is
gambling with the tickets as Congress has done time immemorial.
Now is the time for all the locked rooms stashed with currency notes
collected from govt contractors to be opened.
Ultimately you will see that there was no change in dishing tickets at all.
The excuses will be for you and me to digest.
New comers cannot compete with the old-time rascals with packing suitcases
and having them delivered to their destinations too.
:-)

Cheers
