Yes, the overcast skies and relatively lower humidity in Goa, on Tuesday, has
been a great respite from the sultry weather of the last few days.  This is
perhaps a precusor to the arrival of the monsoons ?

The month of May  in Goa. weatherwise at least, is the least favorite time of
the year for me, primarily because of the heat and humidity. I prefer cooler
weather. The only good thing
about the month of May is the "Festas" and the availability of fruits such as
the fragrant mangoes, jackfruit and fruits such as Jambul, Canta or Carvanda
etc.

For someone who relies on groundwater sources for my water supply, with the
water in my well at a precipitously low level,I hope the water will last till
the monsoon deluge arrives.
Let the monsoons come, and like a little kid I will romp about in my yard and
revel in the cool initial showers.  I am sure my dogs too will welcome the
rains.  Right now they have lost their appetite.  Feeling sorry for them, I
feed them shredded bread with milk and a large dolop of ice cream.  They love
it !

[Goanet] The tale behind the tail

2012-05-22 Thread Mervyn & Elsie Maciel
Perhaps I should have made it clear that my piece was originally
written in response
to a request from the Secretary of the Kenya Administration Club(members include
former Provincial/District Commissioners, Ambassadors/High Commissioners and
myself!) here in the U.K. Our former Colonial masters wanted to know
how we'd settled
in this "foreign" land.
While I appreciate the positive feedback from Mervyn Lobo, I'd
just like to comment on
some of the points raised by Melwyn Fernandes.

As far as I can remember, jobs in those days were aplenty, and I
personally encountered no
discrimination in the job market. While I am aware that some Goans
worked for London Transport
(Tube network) and/or British Rail, many other Asians took on jobs as
bus drivers/conductors.
Not so sure if any Goans worked as dustmen("earned more than the
collar and tie") - but if
they did, good luck to them for not shirking manual labour(something
which, sadly,
many of us have looked down upon for ages).
I am not aware of any "culture of bribery", but Melwyn may well
have proof of this?
Neither am I aware of the property value of houses(at least in our
area) falling,when we
(the very first non-Whites , with four children) moved into our
present home. In fact, our
White neighbours went out of their way to welcome us and we have had excellent
relations with the neighbourhood all these years.
I was also sorry to hear from Melwyn that "our people were only
good for cleaning
church benches and cut flowers for the church". Never encountered
this situation
here, nor any problems with arranging a funeral.
Understandably, as the Goan/Asian population in London increased,
the need for an
Asian Chaplaincy was felt. Here, I feel my late brother(Wilfred) may
have had a hand in
its esbablishment since the late Fr. Moraes once told me that the late
Cardinal Hume,
Archbishop of Westminster, had shown him a letter Wilfred had sent him
from Kenya,
suggesting that the need for an Asian Chaplaincy be considered.
Thanks to Goan Voice(U.K.), we are kept aware of what's going on,
on our doorstep
and beyond, while goanet has a far wider outreach.
All in all, I think we Goans have certainly made our mark in this
country - something
we should all be proud about.

[Goanet] The Ethics Of Goan Politics

2012-05-22 Thread Freddy Fernandes
The Ethics Of Goan Politics

After the untimely demise of the popular Goan activist and MLA elect, Mathany
Saldanha, a lot of Goans wanted his wife Alina to take up the gauntlet of
Mathany's missions and continue his fight for the Goan causes and there were
abundant overtones from a lot of quarters that Alina should be elected
unopposed at the Cortalim by-elections and looking at the most bizarre scenario
on the last day for withdrawal of candidature, they did get their wish, as
Alina Saldanha was indeed elected unopposed from Cortalim. I for I had been a
supporter of Mathany's causes for a long time and I am happy that Alina has
indeed stood up to be counted and by God hope she does for the sake of Goa and
Goans but I would be happier if she had won in a more democratic way.

Is this what a lot of Goans wanted ? Yes, may be the resounding answer, now
that it has happened but let us ask ourselves, was it the right way to happen ?
Here, at least some will give it a though before they shake their heads in
negation, as the bizarre circumstances have only led to some unhealthy and
undemocratic presumptions or rather more questions than answers, which further
question the credibility of our democracy, which has already been robbed of
it's virtues and ethos by corruption and nepotism, as the ethics of Goans
politics had plummeted to newer depths of degeneration.

It is this embedded culture of corruption that had led to squalid misgovernance
which indeed compelled deep introspection in Goans, as a result we witnessed
the overwhelming defeat of the corrupt and the squalid governance and the much
needed change was attained. At the elections in March Goans had made a
statement, that we do not like to be taken for granted and I hope that our
triad against the corrupt and the squalid governance, is not just overwhelming
one day and non-existent the next but that we Goans remain forever vigilant
against the guile and treachery of our politicians.

History has taught us that Democracy can be a boon in the hands of efficient
and capable people but it can also be a bane in the hands of the wrong people,
the selfish and the inefficient and we have seen ample proof of the latter in
India and even in Goa itself, so much so that a lot of disgruntled Goans have
reverberated that Goa should never have been a part of the Indian democracy and
looking at the Indian and Goan politics at the moment some may well accept it
as a fact, especially when we see our loathsome politicians get involved in
horse trading, jumping political bandwagons, changing loyalties, discarding
and embracing principles like they change their under-clothing (if they wear
any), to hold on to positions and financial advantage through political clout.

There have been a range of accusations and counter accusations regarding the
result of the Cortalim by-poll, the truth may never see the light of day like
many other issues but if there were wrong methods used to derail a democratic
process then I say, democracy is not for Goans, it will always be an attempted
murder of the sanctity and ethics of democracy, and I surely hope that Manohar
Parrikar has not violated those norms of democracy to score brownie points over
his rivals. Manipulative democracy is what Goans can do without and for the
sake of Goa and Goans I sincerely hope Manohar Parrikar has not manipulated our
democracy in his bid to embarrass the opposition and ascertain his power in
Goan politics.

If Alina has won the election fair and square without any appropriations, then
I say congratulation Alina Saldanha, may you follow the vision of your late
respected husband and may he guide you from his heavenly abode to carry on his
legacy and fulfill his unfulfilled dreams, to make Goa a truly model state.
May God be with you Alina, in your endeavour.

[Goanet] Live music in Goa!

2012-05-22 Thread Jazz Goa
Goa is and will always be the live music hub of India and hopefully the world
someday. The tourist season between October and March every year, turns Goa
into a global village with people from all over the world making themselves at
home with the Goan way of life. Nowhere else in India would you find hundreds,
maybe thousands of live music venues with almost every second restaurant and
lounge bar in Goa featuring live music in some form or the other. Mumbai, the
supposedly most happening city in India and all other metro cities for that
matter, have only a handful of live music venues in comparison, one of the
reasons why I decided to move out of Mumbai and setup home and studio in Goa
where I belong. In Mumbai I used to tour worldwide with bollywood icons like
Asha Bhosle and Sonu Nigam performing for people from all over the world. After
moving to Goa I still perform for people from all over the world by just going
out and playing at a restaurant in my
neighbourhood. The recently renovated Jardim Garcia da Orta in Panjim was
brought back to life with a series of concerts at the park's grand bandstand,
an initiative by an organization I set up in Goa called Jazz Goa. My studio in
Sangolda has been recording some of Goa's most amazing music talent along with
accomplished international visiting virtuosos, to produce some world class
music that often tops the international internet charts.

On the flipside I have noticed the term 'live music' deteriorating over the
years thanks to machines and one man bands. A one man band is nothing but a
singer singing against pre recorded music and should be called a 'solo singer'
and definitely not a 'one man band' or even worse as some venues advertise
'live music by one man band'. Both the venue and the artiste realize that a one
man band is nothing but a compromise on real live music due to budget and
sometimes space constraints. A place that spells class, like the Marriott's AZ
UR lounge bar has my jazz band Jazz Junction playing live music every Friday
night. A place like Poco Loco in Baga would compromise with a duo singing along
with canned music. Even more scary than the one man band is the 'no man band'
where buttons are pressed to play CD's and passed off as live music. But then
again, to each their own. If people enjoy listening to live music performed by
a CD player so be it. I have spent
close to forty years honing my skill on a musical instrument called a bass
guitar and I will continue playing music on a musical intstrument!

[Goanet] Press Note - TAG Remembers Ermelin, Cruz Jazzwala & Mussolini Menezes

2012-05-22 Thread Tiatr Academy Goa
*Press Note*

*For Favour of Publication*

*TAG Remembers Ermelin, Cruz Jazzwala & Mussolini Menezes*

Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) organized its monthly programme ‘Somplolea
Tiatristancho Ugddas’ – Remembering Tiatr Artistes of Yester Years on
21stMay 2012 at the Conference Hall of TAG, Campal Trade Centre,
Campal Panjim
to remember veteran artistes of tiatr stage namely Ermelin Cardoz, Baptista
Cruz Noronha (Cruz Jazzwala) and Mussolini Vales de Menezes.

“It was Ermelin who was responsible to bring Prithviraj Kapoor the stalwart
of Hindi cinema on the screen” narrated Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, former
President of Tiatr Academy Goa who was the main speaker on the occasion. It
so happened that during the shooting of ‘Cinema Girl’ the cast opposite
Ermelin did not turn up and the director of the film asked Ermelin’s choice
and she choose Prithviraj Kapoor. Mr. Cardozo cited these excerpts from the
book ‘Location Goa’ in which Mario Cabral e Sa has dedicated a full
write-up on Ermelin. Speaking further he said that at that time Ermelin was
paid around Rs. 5000/- a month which was a huge amount at that time when
other actors were paid around Rs. 2000/- to Rs. 3000/-. “One of the most
beautiful heroines of Indian cinema Ermelin has acted in about 40 Hindi
silent films some of which are ‘Hotel Padmini’, ‘Cinema Girl’, ‘Red
Signal’, ‘Children of Storm’, ‘Noor e Bagdad’, ‘Jagad Guru’, ‘Daring
Damsel’… Later on Ermelin was married to Saib Rocha one of the greatest
writer and director of Goan Tiatr. It was a tragic end of ‘Sudhabala’ the
name by which Ermelin was known on the silver screen. She died on the sets
in an accident during the shooting of one of her films”. Mr. Cardozo
further said that it was a matter of great pride for Goans that an actress
of such a depute stepped on the tiatr stage. Giving the names of the tiatrs
he stated that she acted in lead roles in Saib Rocha’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’,
‘Mog ani Krim’… and Souza Ferrao’s ‘Almam Sorgar Vetat’.

Speaking on Cruz Jazzwala Mr. Cardozo said that Cruz was a multifaceted
personality who was not only known as an actor but also was an exemplary
writer, director lyricist, singer and a great musician. He further stated
that he could play trumpet, Violin, Double Bass and Hawain Guitar. He was a
lover of folklore and had great love for Goa and his mother tongue. This
was evident from his songs and mandos which he composed which evolved
around Goa and Goans. He has composed and recorded more than 25 Konkani
songs on gramophone records and some of his famous compositions are ‘Mhozo
Poti Mumboi ghela’, ‘Jakin Bai’, ‘Istimosanv Rozachem’, etc. He was also a
very handsome lad and had also acted female roles in tiatrs of late J. P.
Souzalin, Anthony de Sa, Minguel Rod, etc.

Speaking on Mussolini Menezes Mr. Cardozo stated that Mussolini was a
unique tiatr writer and director. Being a freedom fighter his tiatrs were
focused on Goa’s freedom struggles which are evident from the names eg
‘Raoji Ranno’, ‘Padrinchem Bondd’, ‘Cuncolimche Martyr’. As his tiatrs were
based on Goa’s freedom he could not have the shows in Goa and hence had to
show them in Belgaum, Mumbai and Delhi because the Portuguese wouldn’t
allow such tiatrs to be shown in Goa at that time. He also said that Mr.
Menezes a great lover of Goan folklore and folk music. He showcased this
wherein he presented all the 32 Goan folk forms to packed auditoriums in
Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Madras, Pune, etc.

Summing up on all the three artistes Mr. Cardozo said that all the three
artistes are unique as there was something different in them which one
could not find in a general tiatr artistes. He also requested the family
members of these late artistes to handover the tiatr scripts of these late
artistes to TAG so that it can be preserved for posterity.

Prominent among others who spoke on the occasion were Master Vaz, Anil
Kumar, Fr. Alfred Almeida. Bab Andrew rendered mando and song ‘Mhozo Poto
Momboi Gela’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ which received a great applause from the
audience. Shery Noronha wife of late Cruz Jazzwala rendered a beautiful
mando ‘Khuxi Kazarachi’. Julius Noronha Cruz’s son thanked TAG for
organizing such programmes wherein the late artistes are remembered.
Mussolini’s daughter Syonora and son-in-law Xavier were also present on the
occasion. Also present were John Claro, Jessie Dias, Irene Cardozo, Annie
de Colvale, Tina Costa, Cezar D’Melo, Sheik Amir, Jose Salvador Fernandes,
Dr. Jerry Rodrigues and Octavio.

Earlier Shri. Victor de Sa, Member Secretary of TAG welcomed the audience.
Shri. Joy Fernandes, Cultural Organizer of TAG proposed a vote of thanks
and compered the function.

After reading about Aksai Chin, Nehru behaved the same way with Chou en Lai as
Salazar behaved with Nehru: refused a compromise. China then not only invaded
the disputed area of Kashmir, but also areas of Assam. However, China then
returned the areas of Assam to India on its own terms (apparently China had no
use for it) but kept the Western parts which India has not been able to wrest
from China as yet. Perhaps this broke Nehru's heart more than Goa did; on
the other hand perhaps his concience woke up

Another great Goan pianist has left us. His rendition of Manuel de Falla's
Fire Dance at the Academia de Musica, in Fontainhas, way back in early 70s when
he visited Goa, left me with my mouth open in amazement. That was the occasion
when the Academia held a gathering of all students to honour the great
musician, on his first visit to Goa after some fifteen years abroad.

May his soul rest in peace.

HERALD
"ALINA ELECTED UNOPPOSED"
[Congress nominee Raymond, Independent Borkar withdraw - Alina will be
inducted within a fortnight: CM - Red-faced Congress to expose 'Operation by
Parrikar' ]

Comments:
Goa Su-Raj Party CONGRATULATES Ms. Alina Saldanha on this DUAL COUP:

a) For managing to utterly humiliate and decimate the entity called
the CONGRESS PARTY (in GOA) where her late husband's burning hate of this
Party could not.

b) For keeping only one opponent in place i.e. her own Party, the BJP
for GSRP to fight tooth and nail in the 2017 Elections, with GOA's 'posco
pai' the Congress having been buried and GSRP's vain big dada-brothers i.e.
UGDP and GVP having been castrated and rendered to the status of UNACHS. Goa
must note the statement made by the UGDP's (independent) candidate,
Ramakant Borkar " I withdrew because Parrikar offered me development" .
This development could be the development of his deep pockets?.

BTW the Congress Party has no right to talk about any "Operation'. The
'Operation Vijay' with which they have brow-beaten gullible Goans for the
past 50 years was allowed to be DUPLICATED in 'Kargil' making the 'OPERATION
VIJAY' of Goa NULL & VOID.

Comments:

GSRP is glad to see, at last, that the good doctor of 'medicine' has gone
back to his vocational profession in which he has excelled. No amount of
trying to convince him could deter him from his recent fallacy of
contesting in Aldona at the ripe age of 84. That he was eager to sit on the
CM's chair once again was plain and simple. But surely the 'lost deposit'
and the humiliation therefrom has brought him back to his good senses.
Hopefully he will maintain the status quo.

[Goanet] KOTRIN: book review

LOVE IN TIMES OF DECOLONIZATION

By

DALE LUIS MENEZES

“Gõyank suttka mellunk thoddinch vorsam urlolim. Doxim vattamnim suttke zhuzari
chollvolli choloytale. He chollvollintlo ek zhuzari aslo, Zuzart. To
bhiyenastanam Purtugezam add zhogoddlo. Sogllo lok tachi toknnay kortale. Tachi
toknnay aikonuch Catharina tachea mogant poddlem. Gõychi suttka korunk
zhuztanam Zuzartan aplo jiv vompun dilo. Hech karonnank lagon ‘Catharina’ hem
sobit nanv ‘Kotrin’ zalem,” [The Liberation of Goa was just round the corner.
The Freedom Fighters were taking the movement forward. Amongst the many, Zuzart
was one such Freedom Fighter who fought without any fear against the
Portuguese. Everybody admired him and this public admiration made Catharina
fall madly in love with him. Zuzart became a martyr while fighting for Goa’s
freedom. It is due to this reason that a beautiful name like ‘Catharina’ became
‘Kotrin’] thus goes the intriguing and interesting in-flip cover blurb of Willy
Goes’ latest Konknni novel in the Roman script
. Smartly written, this blurb immediately sucked me right into the kadombori!

‘Kotrin’ is set against the background of the Liberation of Goa from the
Portuguese and the language agitation to make Konknni the raj bhas of Goa.
Kotrin actually is about two women. Though seemingly parallel, eventually they
intersect: Catharina, the one who falls madly in love with a freedom fighter,
of whom she has only heard about but has never set eyes upon and as a
consequence loses her sanity and Venisha, an MA student of psychology who due
to chance and academic interest starts investigating and probing the life of
Catharina.

The novel opens with Catharina/Kotrin being in a bad state of mental health
where she thinks that she is pregnant with the child of her lover. Being a
freedom fighter, Zuzart was being hounded by the Portuguese police and in
particular by a tyrant called Agente Monteiro. As fate would have it, in the
present times there is also another police inspector called Monteiro, whose
daughter is Venisha. Since Kotrin knew that Agente Monteiro was the one who had
killed Zuzart, she would curse this present-day ‘Monteiro’ on the streets in a
loud voice. Once, during a public function Venisha hear Kotrin’s rants against
‘Monteiro’ and thinks that the woman is actually cursing her own father –
Inspector Monteiro! This sets Venisha on a mission to find the truth about this
insane lady.

Throughout the novel, Venisha is portrayed as comparing and contrasting her own
life with that of Kotrin and sometimes their lives overlap. Venisha also comes
in contact with Dr. Alvaro, a friend of Kotrin’s family and who also hails from
the same village as Kotrin’s. Dr. Alvaro and his wife, whenever possible, try
to take care of Kotrin, who by now is wandering the streets and sleeping in
parks and bus stands. It is through Dr. Alvaro that Venisha learns about
Kotrin: how she became what she became.

We are told in the novel that Catharina’s infatuation and attraction towards
Zuzart was only due to his bravery and dedication to the cause of the
Liberation of Goa. Catharina had never seen Zuzart, but had only heard the
villagers speak highly of him. Further in the novel we are told that such an
obsession of Catharina is due to a childhood habit where she wanted anything
that others praised and liked. In an otherwise well written and smoothly
flowing novel, the characterization of Catharina should have been improved and
elaborated. The reader would have liked an intense psychological portrait of
Catharina as to why she behaves in a certain way. Certainly, here was the
occasion to introduce a complex character, for it is the mental structure of
Catharina that forms the keystone of the novel. That a childhood habit of
obstinately wanting whatever others like/praised could lead to insanity is a
notion weak in its conception.

Since the novel is set against the background of such historically significant
events like the Liberation of Goa and the language agitation, a few comments on
such a genre of novels would not be out of place. It is heartening to see that
writers in the Romi script of Konknni are experimenting with such models of
narration. Hopefully, it would spawn more such novels. But using real
historical events can be tricky. On one hand it gives one scope to comment on
events like decolonization, contemporary politics (like in Rushdie’s Midnight’s
Children) but on the other hand if the multiple voices of history are not
recognized and understood properly, one runs into the risk of repeating
anachronistic clichés in history.

For instance, when Willy Goes talk about freedom fighters and the liberation
movement, the idea is that everybody was against the Portuguese colonials. But
this is not so. Many were just fighting against the dictatorship of Salazar and
not against the Portuguese.

The novel ends with
