[Goanet] Goodbye to Goa Fish and Prawn Curries?

2012-11-12 Thread Roland Francis
The news of a jellyfish invasion in the polluted rivers especially in the
Mandovi near Panjim is bad news for Goa fish and shrimp eaters.

This is an invasive species like the Asian Carp, a fish that was found in
Canadian and American lakes that causes imbalance in the food chain and was
probably accidentally introduced into North America by Chinese cargo ships
and vessels.

Invasive species live off larvae as in the case of the new kind of jellyfish
found in Goa or they eat literally tons of smaller fish that are food to the
bigger species, that as a result soon disappear, as caused by the Asian Carp
in Canada. As if overfishing in the world due to large factory-trawlers and
rising populations was not enough, we have now to endure this nature
invasion.

The alternative is farmed fish and shrimp, but besides poor taste, that kind
comes with its own problems like added antibiotics to prevent fish disease
and therefore causing havoc with human body systems.

I think this is a new dulpod as I too have not heard it before,
As you can also see in the lyrics, words like sms and email.
This song I first heard in Band of the sand Lynx CD - Spirit of Goa, which

brilliantly erred, I may now be entitled to an Alzheimer's discount when it

Re: [Goanet] Off topic: Why I voted for Romney - For Mr Lobo

2012-11-12 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Jim Fernandes wrote:
I have NEVER promoted gold, nor have I ever invested in Gold and have no plans
to do so in the future. Without going into much detail, I can assure you that I
am currently not allowed to trade in my account - outside of a detailed
scrutiny and approvals. For now, its the grand old boring mutual funds.

I never thought of gold as an interesting investment - But if you are looking
to make some quick cash (faster than gold), here's an interesting investment
recommendation.

You see, it was brought to my attention earlier this morning, that your friend
Rmoney is planning to unload $25,000 worth of fireworks for pennies on the
dollar! The stash was supposedly meant for use on election night, during his
supposed victory celebrations against Obama. As you are aware, that didn't
exactly pan out. So the miserable man is trying to find buyers on Ebay.

You could buy the crap and quickly flip it around for a ROI, that could beat
gold by a mile  :) .
Now that, my friend, is an awesome investment idea!

Jim Fernandes,
$25K?   Please!    Honey Boo Boo shows have better fireworks. Secondly, by now,
Rmoney has sent the fireworks cache to the Cayman Isle's for safekeeping.

On a different note, Obama won the elections only because the voting process
was complicated, so complicated that even George Bush (43) voted for the wrong
person. If you have not seen the news reports, here is what the Kenyan
newspapers are reporting:

http://www.kenyan-post.com/2012/11/george-bush-accidentally-voted-for-obama.html

As for gold, the reason why the US is facing a 'fiscal cliff' is because the
price of gold is so high. People are selling US paper money for gold. Again.
Now that you do not have a Rmoney to cut taxes and increase military spending,
expect the height of the fiscal cliff to change. Again.

Lastly, Rmoney is not a miserable man. At this very moment he is relaxing in
one of his tax havens, probably with a tea party. Rmoney did what he does best.
He took a look at the situation, divided it, and sold it off. Half the voters
who did not connect with Rmoney are now disconnected from him. Those who did
connect, do not require government services and have the most to lose with the
new Obama taxes. These low tax bracket people will move their capital outside
the US and will receive the usual tax incentive for doing so.

[Goanet] SOCCER: Leicester extend Brandon trial by another week

2012-11-12 Thread Goanet Sports

Leicester extend Brandon trial by another week
Marcus Mergulhao, TNN | Nov 12, 2012,

PANAJI: Brandon Fernandes is feeling at home in Leicester. Not just because
of the Indian population of around three lakh in the city but also the style
of play that English Championship side Leicester City adopts.

The India junior midfielder who is currently trialling with Leicester City
is delighted with his own progress and the club's decision to extend his
trial period by another week has provided another glimmer of hope that the
Goa youngster can possibly break into the big league.

"It's been a good journey for me, so far," Brandon told TOI in a telephonic
conversation from Leicester on Sunday.

"Reading (FC) and Leicester adopt two different styles but I feel more
comfortable with the style here. They pass a lot and it suits me. At
Reading, it was more of a direct football, something that I was not used
to," said Brandon.

Even off the field, Brandon has been completely at ease. Whether it's having
a hair cut, Indian style, with a Gujarati barber around, catching up on his
favourite Bollywood movies at a multiplex near his training ground, or
savouring Indian food, Brandon doesn't have too many reasons to miss home.

"I've made lots of friends here and the city has been kind to me as well.
Such an environment helps with my football and it shows on the field," said
Brandon.

On the field, Brandon has been training with Leicester City's developmental
side, and is growing in confidence with each passing day. The Reading FC
lessons have been learnt well and the 18-year-old cannot wait to graduate
from a talented player to India's first in the big league.

"I just want to get on the rolls of an English side, whether it's in the
Premier League or the Championship does not really matter. I know I have the
potential to succeed (in England) and I just need a chance," he said.

Brandon's popularity is on the rise in England with requests for media
interviews now an everyday thing. For someone as young as 18, it could be
all distracting, but Brandon speaks with the amazing confidence of a
professional.

"I am just keeping my cool. All that goes on outside the field is secondary.
My primary concern is football and I am focusing on that," said Brandon.

In the meanwhile, the wait continues. (ENDS)

[Goanet] Cho-kingfisher voice of Goa!

2012-11-12 Thread Jazz Goa
Much has been said about Goa's amazing music talent, nothing much has been done
about it though. In fact a lot has been undone over the years for some strange
reason. Every major event in Goa sidetracks local artistes for very often,
mediocre to pathetic outstation acts that are paid astronomical amounts to dish
out music that has absolutely no connection with Goa.
The current Kingfisher Voice of Goa for example, pays Luck Ali an obscene
amount to perform at the finals, while the 'un' lucky 'Voice of Goa' takes home
a tiny fraction of that amount as the 'grand' prize.
An absolutely ridiculous equation that insults local talent while claiming to
promote it. Its the same with the IFFI, Literary festival, Think festival and
just about any major event in Goa. Local artistes who are invited to perform
are offered a tiny fraction of what their outstation counterparts are paid. Bad
enough our country suffers from a colonial hangover where most of us Indians
tend to worship foreigners, Goa has it fine tuned to an art form with its
outstation fixation.
Granted, Goans are the most warm and hospitable people on the planet with arms
always wide open to welcome visitors, but stretching our arms wide while
stomping on local talent has to stop.

jc Comment: I believe that Gabriel has written most eloquently about the
'gentler era'. Like others, I too do not know when it commenced. IF Frederick
claims (feigns) that he does not know when it ended, I have a fair idea when it
ended.

> FN: If we don't accept the diversity of dialect and script within Konkani,
> then we're just the other side of the Devanagari coin,

jc Comment: I will assume that FN meant to write "Devanagri Only" in the
sentence above. I add that FN is confusing genteelness and courtesy with
dialect and script.

Example: Urdu can be spoken politely or not so politely. A visit to Lucknow or
Hyderabad will provide us with examples of both. I'd venture to say that the
courtesy in spoken Urdu is disappearing from the Urdu now being spoken in
Hyderabad (Deccan).

> Tony de Sa: Languages evolve. A language which is static is a dead language.

jc Comment : True. Konkani (like Urdu and Hindustani ) were evolving with
Portuguese, Sanskrit ( and Sanskrit, Persian) and other words. That is until
the Know-it-all, My way or highway, Zhalacch Pahije crowd took over.

I hope we can agree that Evolution develops . and is not Imposed.

2012-11-12 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
I would submit that the "elegant Goan era" is, at best, a myth of our
collective (or individual) imagination. It is as "real" as the Golden Age
that we love to hark back to [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Age] or a
kind of cycle of yugas [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Age#Hindu]
which lives on in our beliefs.

Such concepts are linked to class and bias, and obviously have a lot to do
with our own perception of *our* place in a society. As long as we think
things were fine (for us), then it was a great place. I'm sure those who
feel empowered by the post-1961 social change (and I don't mean just a
handful of politicians) would see things are diametrically different.

Was feudal (or semi-feudal) Goa a far more comforting place for many of us
then? Episodic evidence (experiences with the GMC, for instance) are hardly
what we can base our arguments on. For instance, I almost died of
diphtheria in the Goa Medical College (shortly after its Escola Medica)
days in the mid-1960s. My kid had his tongue neatly healed with minimum
fuss earlier this decade. So did my daughter when it came to dealing with a
foot accident. But are we comparing apples and oranges? Or just trying to
make our own (biased) political point? FN

I'd say that Gonzaga's dialect is closer to our own, hence the PLU (people
like us) syndrome. If we don't accept the diversity of dialect and script
within Konkani, then we're just the other side of the Devanagari coin,
imnsho. FN<<<

When the preoccupation of the powers that be (read Manohar Parrikar) to
stump his political opponents, the best thing that they can do is to give
doles to people left right and centre. Fiscal prudence be dammmed. More
important is to prove to people that I am superior, knowledgeable and one
who cannot do wrong. People must know that IIT is a qualification of GODs
which never does wrong or goes wrong.

Only, we shall come to know when our backs are broken when we fall on hard
jagged rocks down the cliff.

Subject: [Goanet] Has Goa already fallen off the fiscal cliff ???

While attention is drawn to the USA's impending fiscal cliff, I wonder
whether Goa has already fallen off the fiscal cliff. Now we hear that Goa is
losing many crores of rupees due to cessation of mining activities. This is
probably the reason for the Government's lackluster control of mining
activities in Goa. It oooks lijke the Govt. was hand in glove with the
miners. The Government has also abolished House tax in Goa, leaving
Panchayats in the lurch as the house tax was an assured source of income.
The Government promised to make up the loss of revenue somehow to the
Panchayats. Dont know if it has happened yet.

Meanwhile, the Government has been giving out goodies left and right. The
"Ladli Laxmi" scheme which gives one lakh of rupees to new brides; monthly
payment of a stipend to housewives (hopefully to those below the poverty
line), etc. etc. All these are sops to the

electorate to assure future votes.

How does one reconcile reduced revenues with higher outlays ?? Soon we will
be in the same straits as the Greeks and other European nations.

A couple of guys I know working on contractual terms with Government
departments have not received their meager pay for weeks. These are guys
working in low paying labour jobs. The Govt. seems to have run out of money
topay them. These are poor people living hand to mouth who are being treated
in such a callous manner by the Government..

Has Goa fallen off the fiscal cliff or what
